ESTATE MANAGER’S REPORT

A YEAR TO REMEMBER As an extremely busy 2019 draws to a close, we welcome you to the summer edition of the Grapevine. WORDS BY TERRY KELLER, E S TAT E M A N A G E R

T

his time last year I commented on what a blur 2018 was and 2019 has been no different. In fact, this year has been even busier with the tremendous pace

of construction on phase two dominating day to day activity on the Estate. With most of the civil infrastructure having been completed during this year, the paving, verges, trees and walkways are being installed. What was Port Jackson bush and sand just over two years ago is now an establishing community within the greater Estate. The Yard has come into its own this year and quickly established itself as a

congregation point for residents and families to take part in sport, fitness and games. The take up has been so popular that additional multi-purpose courts are being considered. Regular resident focused activities are taking place at The Yard and its fantastic to see the enthusiasm for a fit and healthy lifestyle displayed by a wide spectrum of residents. During the festive season the Polo Club and The Valley restaurants will

FLAG HERE

be catering for festive meals and the New Year’s Eve Party will once again take place in the Pearl Valley Conference Venue. Please look out for details in the weekly newsletters. Val de Vie Estate once again hosted prestigious sporting events and the wonderful Andrea Bocelli concert, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity for many to see this super star live on stage. The planning and preparation for this event brought together specialists from national, provincial

and municipal departments who worked with the Estate security and event management teams to ensure that everything proceeded smoothly on the day. In 2020 Val de Vie Estate will once again welcome riders on their ďŹ nal day of the ABSA Cape Epic and the Estate will be on display to a global audience. It is indeed an honor that the Estate is able to successfully host international events of this magnitude. In closing off for the year, I must thank my management team,

our staff, service providers and their staff for always going above and beyond to ensure that the Estate is a priority. Without their dedication, passion and hard work we would not have the wonderful environment and facilities available to all. We wish each and every one of our residents a happy and peaceful festive season and trust that you will travel safely over this time. We look forward to another exciting year and the challenges that 2020 will bring. Happy holidays!

PEACE OF MIND

Where has 2019 disappeared to? I can hardly believe I am writing for the last edition of this year’s Grapevine. What a full and ever-changing year we have experienced in the property industry. Looking back on the year it is incredible to see the changes, improvements, sales and activity we have been involved in. I

would like to focus my article on peace of mind and how Val de Vie Estate provides its residents with this incredible privilege. Having the opportunity to live in a safe environment without the constant, latent threat of danger has such a positive impact on our wellbeing. May we remember this and be grateful for it every time we see children riding their bikes, windows open and neighbours walking and running. Here is a recap of some of our activity over the past few months: 6 GRAPEVINE | DECEMBER 2019

Paarlview Business Park was handed over to the builders in September. We are extremely excited to see this development rise out of the ground. There are still ofďŹ ce spaces available to buy and rent. Please visit www.paarlview.co.za for further information. Construction of phase two of the Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis is progressing extremely well. Shares in the 12J investment plan have quadrupled since my last report which is very encouraging. The expansion of the hotel will attract

and satisfy larger conference and golf day clientele. The second show home (pictured below) within Val de Vie Evergreen is

now open. As you drive towards La Vue from the clocktower you will see the progress being made on phase two of Val de Vie Evergreen. We are eagerly awaiting the launch of the second phase which will offer clients the opportunity to purchase a Life Right on a completed home rather than purchasing off-plan. If you would like to register your interest in phase two please pop into The Yard to speak to a Val de Vie Evergreen sales agent.

I am thrilled to see Val de Vie Estate and two of our spectacular properties representing South Africa within the Southern Hemisphere focus. KELLY MYATT

Once again our UK PR department have been successful in gaining us the most stunning double page feature in the recent edition of the International Property & Travel Magazine. I am thrilled to see Val de Vie Estate and two of our spectacular properties representing South Africa within the Southern Hemisphere focus. Cape Winelands Properties are in the process of opening an office in Pretoria East to be able to offer a personal service to our many clients looking to relocate to the Winelands from Gauteng. The office will be located in The Club Centre, a stunning up-market retail development built by the Atterbury Group. If you are in the area,

please pop by to see our new space. Our rental team have been exceptionally busy with VIP clients needing exclusive short-term

bookings for numerous events on the estate. The demand for longterm rental properties is increasing with families needing to secure a home in readiness for the start of the school year in January. If you require rental assistance our team are based at the Berg River Gate Office daily. May I take this opportunity to wish you and your families a blessed and peaceful holiday season. THE VALLEY CAME ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC

T

he Val de Vie Foundation has touched thousands of young lives in our Valley through

many initiatives these past few years. Introducing 18 aspiring vocalists to Irish pop sensation Ronan Keating, giving them the opportunity to sing with this worldrenowned musician, probably rates as the most moving event, ever. On November 1st the Polo Pavilion Ballroom came alive with the voices of our very own Paarl Valley Eisteddfod (PVE) choir. After two months of rehearsals, this purpose-drawn choir from a diverse mix of junior schools in Paarl and Wellington, came together for a night to be indelibly imprinted in the minds of our 18 young vocalists. Included in the choir were talented young singers from WA Joubert, Paarlzicht, Paarl Gimnasium, Courtrai, Noordeind, Van Wyksvlei and Paarl Boys Primary. Caren Bosman, Courtrai choir director and volunteer choir mistress to PVE, remarked: “When the invitation came to create a small choir to perform with Ronan Keating, I was not

expecting this beautiful journey with the children. This was a journey marked with dedication, hard work, an indescribable bond amongst the children and unity. A living testimony to our capacity to overcome difference through working towards a common goal with a children’s choir, drawn to a future filled with hope. Starting off with “Happy” from Pharell Williams got the crowd going and certainly relaxed our young singers. Then onto the “Click Song” and “Shosoloza” for a real touch of Africa. And the highlight? When Ronan called the choir back for his grand finale of his famous song “Rollercoaster” and the audience gave a standing ovation. We are so privileged to live in an Estate such as Val de Vie. It attracts the best in the world with the true heart to give back to our disadvantaged communities. On 1 November we proved that we are truly stronger, together. Our PVE choir will go from strength to strength with performance opportunities at the Val de Vie markets and surrounding wine farms in 2020. DECEMBER 2019 | GRAPEVINE 11

VAL DE VIE FOUNDATION HOSTS READING WORKSHOP WITH WCED

A

child first “learns to read” and then “reads to learn.”

The great tragedy in South Africa today is that 78% of our children cannot read for meaning by the age of 10 (55% in the Western Cape). This is one of our greatest challenges: to ensure all children read for meaning by the age of 10. This transformative task cannot be achieved by our Government Education Department alone. It requires a social movement whereby the Whole of Society (WOSA) comes together with a bold, audacious goal to drive our literacy to global standards. The Val de Vie Foundation recently joined the Coalition for

Quality Education in the Western Cape to actively spearhead this initiative with the Coalition. On Monday 2nd September, 2019 primary school education took a major leap forward at Val de Vie Estate with the Coalition for Quality Education facilitating a workshop with 52 key stakeholders. This included active citizens from the Education sector NGO and Western Cape Education Department (WCED) who collaborated to review the extremely well thought through new WCED strategy and implementation plan.

The plan calls for age “ appropriate reading for comprehension front and centre in the Foundation (Grade R - Grade 3) and Intermediate phase.

This was followed up by a workshop held at Somerset College where over 200 concerned citizens from WCED, funding organizations, publishers, higher education institutions, advertising and social change organizations. The work done on October 22nd prepared civil society to contribute to the new Reading Strategy launch in February 2020. Because it takes a village to raise a child, the Coalition is encouraging all stakeholders in the Western Cape to help unleash the power of reading. That includes leaders to help strengthen readership in schools and adults and elders to become engaged in reading to children. We encourage all Val de Vie Estate residents to contact the Foundation to find out where you can help. Contact: Lorraine.Hadfield@valdevie.co.za RONWE PRIMARY LEARNER

TO A TEE

Over the last four months we have been hard at work recruiting the right people for the job and I am pleased to share that we were successful in finding trained, skilled managers for The Valley restaurant and also a highly qualified Food and Beverage Director together with a top class Executive Chef. The club is in a great position going into season and I feel confident about the upcoming months. W O R D S B Y D A M I A N W R I G L E Y, P E A R L VA L L E Y C L U B G E N E R A L M A N A G E R

ver the past three years a great deal of project work has taken place on the golf course and it has been incredibly rewarding to work so closely with Mike Westman of Golf Data, Sean Quinn of Nicklaus Design, the committee members over the years and of course my Directors. These kinds of projects require a great deal of planning and an enormous amount of resources. thing about course design “andOnemaintenance is that the job is never done; there will always be improvements. Our focus and energy in 2020 will be on course conditioning and playability.

14 GRAPEVINE | DECEMBER 2019

As the current projects on the course come to an end, we are wrapping up some of the final work still to be completed. The project I am most proud of this year has been the 7th greens complex. The members range is also something I am excited to open in December. The range is going to be double the size with a formal parking area, undercover hitting bay on wheels with misters, two park benches, a water cooler and in time a ball dispenser machine for member cards only. The addition of the mounding behind the members range has been raised to create a more intimate and private feel. This side of the range will evolve with time and I see it becoming a social hub for golf members. The addition of a putting green and specialist pitching area will also happen in time.

Clubhouse News Over the last four months a big part of the team’s focus has been spent on food and beverage. I could not be prouder of the hard work and commitment they have

all put in to turn it around. The new menu has added a better variety of dishes with focus on flavour and suited to everyday eating. The kitchen team has been hard at work to ensure food consistency. Our restaurant managers are focusing on customer service whilst training and developing our service ambassadors. One area that we still need to perfect is our bar service over busy periods.

The golf shop is sporting a fresh look as we have our first summer stock on the floor. There are some cool outfits to choose from, my personal favourites are the funky Peter Millar shirts with cars on them. I would like to thank all the members for their continued support of the shop throughout the year. Our Golf Shop will be running many activations over the upcoming season so be sure to read your golf update. This year we will also present some great Christmas activations from the 25th of November to the 24th of December with wrapping services provided. If you require any custom orders, please be sure to get them in early.

Golf Events Over the upcoming summer months, we are action packed with so many great golf events. Our nine and wine is in full swing, James Wade and his team are offering a number of clinics that are being well supported and that add great value to the members. One that stood out for me was the Protea Golf Clinic put together by Corlia Douglas that offered more than just golf, it offered a networking brunch and an informative presentation on golf swing analysis by our highly experienced biokineticists. This clinic saw a record attendance of 45 ladies and was an incredible event. In closing I would like to wish you all the very best for the upcoming summer season. May you enjoy the atmosphere around the club whilst spending time with your family, friends and loved ones. To those of you travelling over this time, I wish you a safe and pleasant trip. 16 GRAPEVINE | DECEMBER 2019

STAGES of the HUMAN LIFE CYCLE Life is a journey - Life is short Enjoy life

Everyone has a story to tell. Christo Malan explains life as follows: to support the deepest needs of human life, every stage of the human life cycle is significant and has its gift. Childhood: a newborn represents a sense of hope to make the world a better place, while pre-school represents energy, playfulness, and imagination as a source of creative inspiration for the future. Early adulthood includes: finding a job, establishing a circle of friends, and finding a soul mate while trying to make your mark in life. Midlife: represents contemplation and time to reflect on the deeper meaning of life. A way to forge ahead with a new understanding of family life, your job, social environment, and values that matter.

Mature adulthood: means you have established yourself by raising a family. You have climbed the ladder of corporate life or built a successful business. You are becoming a contributor to the improvement of society through NAME NAME mentorship and philanthropy. You start to give more of NAME NAME yourself by helping others and reaping the benefits of life’s lessons. “Coming in for the landing”: reminds us not to take life for granted and live each moment of life to its fullest. It is the time to concede that your small life forms part of a greater whole. We, therefore, have a responsibility to nurture the human life cycle and to support each stage, to ensure that all humans blossom optimally.

“Somebody is sitting in the shade today, because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” - Warren Buffet

From Seed to Shade The word “Autus” is a Latin word, which means “growth.” Over nearly two decades, Autus Private Clients has grown from a one-person business to a successful multi-generational family wealth planning business. At Autus, we treat our clients as part of our extended family. We know they are looking for value to be demonstrated, reflecting a balance of price, product features, and service tailored to their needs. Most importantly, peace of mind. We want to give each of our clients the best possible experience. We know you work hard for your money; therefore, we want you to benefit from every cent. Our staff, clients, and community all form part of our extended family. As a family-owned business with a desire to pass it onto the next generation, we have a long-term investment horizon. We see ourselves as stewards of a better future. Autus wishes you a festive season with your family, travel safely, and a prosperous 2020.

WELLNESS

W

IT IS WELL

As a world leader in luxury wellness estates, Val de Vie Estate offers an environment to live an engaged life where mental, emotional and spiritual wellness is encouraged. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

22 GRAPEVINE | DECEMBER 2019

orldwide, wellness real estate and wellness communities represents a shift in focus that explicitly puts people’s health at the centre of the conception, design, creation, and redevelopment of our homes and neighbourhoods. At the Global Wellness Summit held in Singapore in October this year, there was much discussion around: “If we live in a place where a culture of wellness is the norm, we are much more likely to live a well life.” How we feel, what we think, our values and how we treat others are connected in our mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.

SAFETY Living in a place where you feel safe has a long-lasting positive impact on one’s wellbeing. Feeling less anxious about the safety and security of ourselves and our loved ones allows for more ‘headspace’ to be allocated to the things that matter and ultimately lead to a better quality life. Home is where we spend a large amount of time and when we feel safe, we find it easier to

relax, indulge in the things that comfort us, and allow us to focus on work and stability.

THE ARTS The premise that the arts are fundamental to well-being is wholeheartedly supported by Val de Vie Estate. The opening of a new, innovative space in the Polo Village Offices – The Gallery – provides a venue dedicated to creativity. In a partnership with Stellenbosch University, the Estate invites intellectuals in their various fields to engage with our residents on a number of topics. Events such as the Andrea Bocelli classical music concert that took place in April this year is another example of the Estate as leaders in global wellness. Studies continue to show that exposure to the arts have wide-ranging effects on cognitive health and is part of a process of become more self-aware.

AESTHETIC DESIGN Walking the tree-lined streets of our Estate or cycling past green and wide-open spaces provide restorative settings which reduce stress and anxiety. The design of the Estate

lends itself to optimal views of the surrounding mountains, lakes, landscaped gardens, access to the Berg River, protected Fynbos areas, lush polo fields and the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. True country-style living enables us to become more connected with nature and bring our minds back into rhythm.

ANIMALS The human-animal bond significantly contributes to our emotional well-being. A leash-free dog park on Val de Vie Phase Two is a safe space for man’s best friend to socialise and play with other dogs and kilometres of walking trails meandering through the entire estate are ideal for daily walks. Dog owners are reminded to please dispose of their dog’s waste when going for a walk. Horses have many gifts to offer us as they instil a sense of peace, just by being around them. Especially with children and special needs individuals, they build confidence and determination. Sign up for a riding lesson with our instructors at the Val de Vie Equestrian Club, or just stroll past the stables early morning or late afternoon to spend some time in the presence of these astounding animals.

The evening was truly memorable, as it was Gary Player’s 84th birthday and the eve of our beloved Boks leading us to victory against the English in the World Rugby Final in Japan. Bok captain Siya Kolisi delivered a video-message to all guests to thank them for their support and encouraged them to dig deep in their pockets to raise funds. They did just that, under the watchful auction eye of comedian Nick Rabinowitz who entertained the audience while raising R1.5 million in under two hours. Ronan Keating performed memorable songs from his Boyzone and solo albums and sang a few songs with the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod choir, after serenading Gary Player for his birthday, much to the delight of all in attendance.

For the more competitive spectator who enjoys a bit of team spirit the tournaments hosted by Val de Vie Polo Club have been set. The first of the season tournaments have been named after the late Johan du Plooy who recently lost his

battle to cancer. Johan, nicknamed Sham which is short for Shamwari meaning “friend” in Shona by his nearest and dearest, was a talented polo player who was difficult to miss on the field with his bright orange gear and vigorous need for speed. Sham will always remain a legend at Val de Vie Estate and his kind nature and love for animals will be sorely missed. We raise our mallets to this outstanding human whose memory will from now on open the Val de Vie Polo Season

IN MEMORY OF

JOHAN DU PLOOY IN ACTION

SO LONG, SHAMWARI In a moving tribute at the Pink Polo presented by Biomedical Emporium on 9 November 2019, Hannes Pickard delivered a speech in memory of Johan du Plooy who lost his battle to cancer earlier this year.

J

ohan would have loved to be here today… A bright smiled, blue-eyed farm boy with bare feet at heart. His fellow Polo Club Members called him “Sham” which is short for Shamwari meaning friend in Shona and this is exactly what he was. A kind soul with a special bond with animals.

After several years abroad mastering the art of polo, we welcomed him home. Not only did he produce award-winning strings of polo ponies he also played in countless international games representing his country and supported his team mates. While we are surrounded by the colour pink today, even the smallest speck of bright orange will remind us of Johan. His potent presence on the field and skilled fighting spirit will be remembered by us all. He was an outstanding trademark in orange gear that played testament to his sentimental Free State heritage.

38 GRAPEVINE | DECEMBER 2019

He loved celebrations and celebrations loved him. The flat-out speed polo player who didn’t let a chat and a dance go by. Johan, we the Val de Vie team, the players, your family, your friends and the ponies. We look up and we salute you. Today we will celebrate you.

SECURITY REPORT

LAW & ORDER

Our country’s criminal justice system is suffering due to a plethora of self inflicted ailments, resulting in soaring crime rates yet appalling low prosecution rates. Because of this we are compelled to become as self-sufficient as we can within the ambit of the existing laws that govern us. WORDS BY LOUIS DE JAGER, SECURIT Y AND RISK MANAGER

E

ffective intelligence gathering, crime prevention, investigations and even civil unrest management are but four of the day to day aspects and function for which we, as an estate, although guaranteed by the Constitution have to plan and budget for. Estates have to extensively invest in manpower, underpinned by electronic support systems, to optimally function and keep our residents safe. Our Government is constitutionally obligated to prevent crime and implement investigation and prosecutions but does not deliver on a level which law abiding, tax compliant individuals are entitled to expect. This is evident in the large number of private security companies which have to do

this in their stead in order to ensure effective safety and security and this comes at a considerable cost. You might wonder why all the above. The answer is quite straightforward in that the Security Department experiences these problems ďŹ rsthand, daily, on behalf of our residents and will in preparation of the 2020 budget have to factor these elements in so that we are able to cope as crime rates surge and become more sophisticated whilst government support dwindles. It has been a wonderful year of being of service to our residents and amidst the many challenges we face as a country, we still believe that 2020 will be a good year, as our estate continues to be a safe haven for all those who call it home.

Andy and Kerryn, two Yoga and Pilates instructors, have converted multiple private offices into their wellness studio. ”The collaboration works because we can benefit Workshop17 as much as they can be benefit us. You already have a community here.”

While shared offices are gaining momentum worldwide, they are not the best solution for everyone. “I felt insecure in the open working space. I’m a creature of habit and want to sit at the same desk every day with privacy. Having access to a private office was important to resolve this issue for myself and our clients,” says Steph, from Katika Consult. Paul has high hopes for the space. “Paarl is transforming into a hub in two ways. Firstly, it is still an agricultural centre, but now with a focus on innovation and agritech. Secondly, it is becoming a place to live for professionals and executives seeking a good lifestyle with quality schools at affordable rates.” Tabakhuis is confident that their unique history, accessible location and collaborative nature will soon produce a new wave of entrepreneurs in South Africa.
