More Than a Century and a Half of Combined Security Management Expertise
FROM LEFT: Danie Bosman (HOA IT Manager), Cameron eK ller (Software Technician), Louis de Jager (Risk Manager), Marius Herselman (Assistant Security Manager), Ronecia Adams (HOA Administrative Assistant), Reneile Pamplin (Junior Security Technical Manager), Maurice Haupt (Security and Postal Service Coordinator) and Brett Ashington (Thorburn Contract Manager)
As the safest place to live in Africa, we are fortunate to have a high-ranking, skilled team protecting our residents, guests and everyone who works here. The senior leadership experience in our Security team totals over 150 years and two of the team’s leaders have each been at Val de Vie Estate for more than ten years. As a result, our Security team’s experience, intellectual property, skillset and expertise are unrivalled. With the security situation in our country and the broader environment constantly changing, residents have no reason for concern with such a highly respected and experienced leadership team that continuously monitors and manages the risks and potential threats in and around our immediate surroundings. Our team benefits from annual refresher courses in people skills, conflict handling, snake handling, Level 3 medical emergency response, and other essential training. All Val de Vie Estate Security team members are subjected to pre-employment polygraph tests and criminal checks. Random polygraph testing is done monthly as part of our integrity management procedures. To ensure the appropriate handling of situations, the team is now also equipped with body cameras for accurate and objective reporting. Three new high-level shift managers have recently been appointed. They have a wide range of abilities and are adept for any situation that requires attention. This update would be incomplete without a special mention of Nixon, our K-9 team member, and his team of handlers, each one hand-picked to best handle the challenges they may face. The Val de Vie Estate security strategy and execution plan is a template for many estates around the country. Security teams and trustees of other estates often consult our team to learn and take guidance from our expertise.
• VAL DE VIE FOUNDATION •
Uplifting Youth Through the Vehicle of Sport In October 2021, Chatz Charity hosted a fun run for Val de Vie Estate residents to raise funds for the Val de Vie Foundation. As part of the Val de Vie Foundation's mandate to support community needs, the Emerald Foundation was selected as the beneficiary. The Val de Vie Foundation handed over a cheque of R55 000 to John McGrath, founder of The Emerald Foundation. They help the community develop healthy habits, personal fitness, and sportsmanship through intramural programs, sports, and various fitness services. Its mission is to provide safe, clean and inclusive facilities for the Mbekweni community. These programs help develop physical fitness, reduce stress, promote positive use of leisure time, appreciate the environment, and develop interpersonal skills.
John McGrath established the Emerald Foundation in 2018 in Mbekweni, a community outside Paarl. As a non-profit organisation, the Emerald Foundation want to encourage growth-orientated mindsets and enable individuals to transform obstacles into opportunities.

Showing Up Competitive show jumping has enjoyed immense popularity since the early 1900s, and worldwide the discipline continues to grow. Jumping is recognised as an Olympic equestrian discipline at its highest competitive level. To prepare for these high levels of competition, young riders and their horses attended ungraded training shows to build their confidence. At these relaxed and fun events, in-arena assistance from qualified instructors is permitted, and all experience levels are welcome.
At the Val de Vie Equestrian Club Training Show on 27 April, riders were spoilt for choice with various classes to meet their skill and confidence levels. A set course of colourful obstacles and tricky turns challenged both the mental and physical agility of horse and rider. Novice riders bravely entered the arena to show their capability of steering their horses over flat poles and ruler-high raised ones. Our polo players had the opportunity to introduce their speedy steeds to jumping for the first time, and the remainder of the event was filled with exceptional displays of horsemanship and athleticism. Congratulations to the prize winners and the Val de Vie Equestrian Club for putting up a great event and learning opportunity. Thank you to our partners Vetscape, Western Shoppe, Horse and Style, Hooves and Paws, Equicross, Caroline Hartley Photography, SA Equine Health and Michaela Jane Jewellery.

Fairies, Disney princesses, ballet dancers and other creatively dressed riders were accompanied by their equally impressively dressed horses to match. Spectators were treated to pop-up stalls, a tuck shop and non-stop entertainment from the arena.

The Polo Pavilion by Back’s Winter Chef’s Menu is a culinary experience of comfort food and flavour. The delicious dishes are exactly what we need for the colder winter months ahead. Chef Kyle has combined unique flavours and culinary concepts to bring our residents and guests back to the Pavilion following two winters without our flagship restaurant. Starters include a Thai-style soup with bitterballen filled with butternut and chevin on homemade chutney and toasted pumpkin seeds. The pork and prawn potstickers are light yet filling, with a zesty citrus ponzu and vegetable salad to add accompanying flavour. Try the perfectly cooked beef Wellington with Fairview free-range red Angus fillet and roasted baby carrots on a rainy and cold day. For mains, the grilled fish of the day combines Thai flavours and Southern-style cooking. Grits (a buttery, cheesy polenta-like grain) interlaced with charred sweetcorn, crispy Fairview chorizo and a green curry coconut sauce is a unique flavour experience. The slow-braised oxtail is filling dish of Cape Malay spiced lentil, cauliflower and butternut for a meat-free option. Dessert options include delectable chocolate fondant served with a poached pear or traditional Cape brandy pudding made with pecan nuts and dates, topped with ice cream. The fireplace in The Pavilion has been lit to keep us warm and cosy in the upcoming chilly season. Try one of the new cocktails on the menu as pre-drinks to your dinner or to unwind after a busy day. We recommend the ‘Old Fashioned’ with Maker’s Mark bourbon, bitters, sugar syrup and citrus zest to add spice to a cold winter’s eve.

Gardening with our Evergreeners Our growing Val de Vie Evergreen community's calendars are filled with informative talks, wine tasting experiences, Bridge championships and outdoor activities. With autumn in the air, our residents enjoyed the last few warm days of the season with an olive-picking excursion and attended to their gardens following an insightful garden talk. F R OM R E L UCTANT WAT E R -SAF E T Y S T UDE NT T O S W I MME R At Diana Pabwe’s first swimming lesson, she had no intention of becoming a swimmer. She just wanted to be comfortable in a pool. “I was frightened at first and couldn’t get my body to relax, as the environment was so unfamiliar”, says Diana. Small movements in the water and the support of a pool noodle enabled Diana to master floating and breathing techniques. Following months of practise and consistently showing up for lessons, she now swims multiple laps at a time. You will find Diana in the 25m indoor pool at the Sports and Lifestyle Centre effortlessly gliding through the water. Her favourite swimming styles are freestyle and backstroke.
Swim Smart Mavis Zuze, Lee Masongorere and Lavender Jenje were terrified of swimming pools, having never set foot in one. Far removed from their comfort zones was the thought of learning to swim. All three ladies are childminders, and water safety is paramount not only for the little ones in their care but also for themselves. So they signed up for lessons at the Ryk Neethling Swimming Stars school and arrived doubtful that they could immerse themselves in the water. But, with the guidance of their instructor Savannah Street and step-by-step training activities, they became more confident every week. “It’s been just over a month of swimming lessons, and Mavis, Lee and Lavender have made tremendous breakthroughs. They can now float, kick and move around the pool without fear. Every week we get closer to their goal of swimming 25 metres without hesitation”, says Savannah. Teaching people to swim equips them with a skill that could save lives. To sign up for lessons with the Ryk Neethling Swimming Stars school, contact 073 458 3890 or valdevie@learntoswim.co.za. Put out to Greener Pastures Former professional rugby players CJ Stander and BJ Botha chose Val de Vie Estate to settle down after spending years abroad.
RIGHT: Christiaan Johan Stander (CJ)’s rugby career began in South Africa. He moved to Ireland in 2012 where he played for Munster and made his debut for Ireland in 2016. He earned 51 caps for his adopted country, as well as one cap for the British and Irish Lions in 2017, before retiring in 2021. BELOW: Brendon James (BJ) Botha is a former rugby union player. He played 25 Tests for the Springboks including the World Cup Final 2007.
Which Estate facilities do you make use of to stay fit? CJ: The Yard Gym is a world-class facility, on par with the high standard of international gyms that I trained in during my rugby career. I am there most mornings at 05:00, joining other motivated residents to work hard. There is such a great vibe in The Yard Gym in the mornings. On days that I am not in the gym I do a 10 - 12km run around the Estate with my wife. BJ: The Yard Gym is extremely well equipped and offers so many different forms of training that residents can participate in. As a passionate mountain biker, I enjoy that Val de Vie Estate is ideally positioned in the middle of many Winelands trails and offers easy access to these trails. During the warmer months, I use the 50m Olympic outdoor swimming pool at The Yard to train. Do you participate in any fitness classes on the Estate? CJ: I used to do Fit45 classes at The Yard Gym and enjoyed the skilled

What advice would you give working residents on Val de Vie Estate about making time for training and exercise in a busy daily routine? CJ: Decide whether you are a morning or an evening person. This will help you perform optimally, and look forward to training. Then decide if you prefer training individually or as part of a group. Once these decisions have been made, just go to the gym or go run, swim or cycle on the Estate. BJ: Val de Vie Estate makes training and exercise easy. The gyms are open from 05:00 until 21:00 so residents have the option to go train before or after work. The Estate offers a safe environment that makes running, walking and cycling safe and easy. There is also the option of playing Padle tennis late in the afternoon or evening which is great for families to participate in. Why did you decide to move to Val de Vie Estate? CJ: When we moved back to South Africa, after living in Ireland, we wanted to
BJ: Val de Vie Estate met all the criteria that our family was looking for in a home. The Estate is safe and has some of the best facilities in the country. It offers an unmatched lifestyle for its residents. Another big deciding factor was Paarl itself. From Val de Vie Estate you have access to some of the best schools in the country for children to attend.

Kona Ironman is the ultimate test of mind, body, and soul. Out of the approximate 100 000 triathletes that compete in qualifying for this coveted event, only about two percent are successful. Two of our residents, Cobus Kruger and Jenny Close, will be taking part in this iconic global sporting event in October 2022 in Kailua-Kona in Hawaii. Kona Ironman follows the standard total Ironman event distance of 3.86km swim, 180.2km on the bike, and a 42.2km marathon. A tremendous amount of time and discipline goes into qualifying and training for this event, known as the pinnacle of the triathlon landscape.
Cobus and Jenny train between 18 and 24 hours a week whilst still maintaining their day jobs and living everyday life. One can imagine that this requires a lot of planning and many early mornings. The extreme races required to qualify for Kona Ironman also come with their own challenges. Training for races that take part in different parts of the world means considering time zones, seasonal changes and altitude whilst training to better prepare for the race itself. For example, the couple expect temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and almost 95 percent humidity in Hawaii, which is a considerable jump from the Western Cape's moderate climate. And always at the back of any athlete's mind is the possibility of an injury. They say there are five disciplines in the sport of triathlon: Swim, bike, run, nutrition and mental toughness.

Cobus and Jenny regard Val de Vie Estate as one of the best estates globally for triathletes and frequently use the Estate's training facilities. The most important one is the 50m Olympic style pool, as a pool of this size is not easily accessible to athletes. The roads and pathways on the Estate are sufficient to run a half marathon distance, and knowing that they are safe means they can do so early mornings or in the evenings. In addition, Val de Vie
