Bird watching provides many opportunities to experience wonder, surprise and amazement, whether spotting a new species, hearing an unusual call, or watching a display or mating ritual. Bird watching has many proven mental health benefits, from reducing stress to awe-inspiring moments of appreciating the wildlife around us. While getting out into nature or enjoying it from the comfort of our garden helps to contribute to our general well-being – birds are particularly effective – as we can both see and hear them. Focusing on birds and other aspects of the

Feeling Chirpy

natural environment can also positively contribute to our mindfulness, distracting us from ruminative thoughts and allowing us space to simply enjoy the moment. During a recent study, scientists proved that when people witnessed more birds daily, they experienced reduced prevalence and severity of depression, stress and anxiety. You can do bird watching alone or as a fun family activity. A small pair of essential binoculars will help you get a closer look at anything you spot and enable you to examine our feathered friends in more detail. In addition, a bird pocket book will help

you identify species and tick off any new finds – an enjoyable activity at any age. Focus your attention on how the birds look and sound. Examine their plumage and explore the colours. Do you see any patterns?

How long is their beak? Can you spot the differences between the male and females of the species? Also, be sure to focus on their calls. Is the sound high or low-pitched? Can you hear species ‘chatting’ with each other? Could you try and imitate their calls? Immerse yourself in the world of the bird and seek pleasure from the beauty that is all around us on Val de Vie Estate.

Your Dog’s Lifeline

WORDS BY EUGENE BOTHA, ESTATE COO

Every community has rules in place about dogs. These rules intend to protect the health and safety of the public, or in the case of the Estate, the residents, and your and others' pets. While on private property, dogs need to be under their owner's control; while on public property, dogs must be on a leash.

For animal lovers, it may seem unnecessary, and reasons like "But my dog is friendly" or "My dog loves other animals and humans" may cross your mind. However, using a leash will benefit you, other residents, their pets, as well as your pet.

COMMITMENT, CARE, AND CONTROL. THE THREE BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES OF A DOG OWNER

A leash is called "Your Dog's Lifeline," protecting your pet from running in front of traffic or chasing a bird or cat. It also allows you to protect them if your dog feels the need to protect themselves or you, their owner, when they might feel scared or threatened.

It's a great way to reward your dog. Your dog immediately responds with a wagging tail when he sees you holding the leash.

It makes you a good neighbour. Some people don't like dogs or are allergic to dogs, while others are terrified of dogs. Keeping your dog on a leash shows respect for others around you, especially those who wish to keep their distance from dogs. Additionally, whether intentionally or not, a dog could bite, knock over or injure someone.

Using a leash will prevent your dog from trespassing on other's property during a walk.

Your best friend could become nature's enemy if taken off a leash and allowed to run free. They can destroy the homes of ground-nesting birds, stress small mammals, and you may not notice when they have "visited the bathroom". Failure to scoop the poop could result in a fine.

When roaming off-leash, it is harder to monitor what your dog may try to eat or drink. In addition, your dog could come in contact with plants they are allergic to, which could result in a trip to the vet. Also, if your dog gets away, you risk them getting lost or injured.

And finally, you, as the owner, need to comply with the Estate Rules and failing to do so may lead to a fine or, in extreme cases, you may be requested to remove your animal from the Estate.

Practice Makes Perfect

How much practice is enough? Malcolm Gladwell first described the 10,000-hour rule in his book Outliers: The Story of Success, stating that "you need to have practised, to have apprenticed, for 10,000 hours before you get good." According to Gladwell, taking every opportunity for practice that comes your way is essential because there are no mistakes in life, only lessons. The forthcoming equestrian training show on Saturday, 11 March, at the Val de Vie Equestrian Club provides

the perfect opportunity for participants to practice their horsemanship skills and test their athleticism, mental agility and physical agility strength. Here are some of the reasons why you should consider taking part:

Be confident

A training show helps improve your confidence by creating a safe and fun environment to compete in. You will be surrounded by others facing the same

challenges as you and overcoming similar worries or fears. You will also be able to learn from the more experienced riders who are competing at the show.

Keep calm and carry on

Show jumping in front of others can be intimidating, but the best competitors can remain calm and confident – even when their nerves get the better of them. This is an important skill when horse riding and everyday life. Show jumping is the perfect way to practice the skill of remaining calm under pressure.

Be fit and active

Show jumping is a physically demanding sport and a great way to stay fit and active. You'll be jumping over fences, which requires athleticism and strength, while regular show jumping lessons can also help to improve your mental focus and concentration.

You and your horse

While you're show jumping you'll need to adjust the way you ride to make the perfect jump, which means you'll need to know everything about your horse and its abilities, likes and dislikes – allowing you to learn more about (and bond) with your horse.

On the Wings of the Wind

When looking for birds of prey, you need not venture further than the Estate’s perimeter. The PaarlFranschhoek valley, Wellington and Stellenbosch areas are home to the highest population of raptors in the Cape Winelands region. These beautiful predatory birds are spotted daily by our residents.

A raptor, commonly called a ‘bird of prey’, is generally regarded as a bird that hunts other animals. While many birds hunt insects, mice and reptiles, the term ‘raptor’ describes those that fall within the orders of Falconiformes (including vultures, eagles, buzzards, falcons, kites, harriers, sparrowhawks and goshawks) and Strigiformes, which are the owls. All birds of prey have hook-tipped beaks and sharp curved claws called talons (in non-predatory vultures, the talons are present but atrophied).

The patterned plumage of the jackal buzzard is most often spotted on the Estate, as well as the yellowbilled kites, easily identified by a bright yellow beak and forked tail. Perched conspicuously along the roads, or more commonly hovering over natural areas, black-winged kites and common kestrels help control the rodent populations. More elusive are the two sparrowhawk species, which roost in close cover, occasionally dashing out on unsuspecting birds as they fly past.

Watching the harrier hawks raiding speckled pigeons or house sparrow nests is always fascinating, as they appear clumsy. However, on closer inspection, their long legs and supple joints allow these contortionists to reach the smallest cavities while flapping and hanging onto the eaves. They, too, are a unique bio-control mechanism for what are often considered by homeowners to be ‘nuisance birds’.

At night, the deep hooting of the spotted eagle owls and the blood-curdling scream of barn owls indicates that the nocturnal rodent control team is at work. Owls are not as easily spotted as other raptors, as they are most active at night.

The sheer number and diversity of raptors on the Estate, as they are apex predators, is a beautiful indication of the ecosystem’s health. As the natural areas increase in biodiversity and mature, the number of raptors will increase.

Hopefully, one day, in the not-too-distant future, the critically endangered black harrier will be found nesting here again. With fewer than 1,000 breeding adults left in the population, that would be an extraordinary addition to our already impressive raptor list.

Let's uncover some interesting spotted

eagle owl facts

The spotted eagle owl is the most common eagle owl in Southern Africa and has a distinctive appearance with prominent 'ear tufts'.

They have big appetites, and their diet ranges from insects, frogs and lizards to small mammals and birds.

The wings of an owl are finely serrated so that they can fly silently. This allows them to approach quietly so that they can hear prey over their own sounds.

The eyes of owls are adapted to be like a pair of binoculars. They are fixed in place, allowing for detailed long-distance vision for hunting, but their close-range vision is poor. Owls can rotate their heads 270 degrees horizontally and 90 degrees vertically to compensate for this.

Owl-some News

Val de Vie Estate is fortunate to have a healthy population of spotted eagle owls (Bubo africanus) that frequent the area. Their presence is a testament to the Estate's commitment to preserving and protecting their natural habitat. Two years ago, Simon Allen, Val de Vie Estate's Environmental Officer, began an owl box installation project, giving our 'wisest' residents a safe place to nest. Scan the QR to find out more about this ongoing project.

Please be cautious of owls when driving at night or before sunrise. Owls hunt on the road and have been involved in fatal accidents with vehicles of reckless drivers on the Estate. We appeal to our residents to be more vigilant.

Growing up to 45cm, weighing around 700g and with a wingspan of about 1 metre, the spotted eagle owl is the smallest of all the eagle owls.

At night, male and female spotted eagle owls sing a duet, with the female's voice slightly higher than the male's. When they communicate, they sing two or three noted hoots, while when alarmed, they give a single hoot.

Spotted eagle owls brood and raise their young in abandoned nests of other raptors, on ledges and sometimes on the ground.

The spotted eagle owl camouflages himself with brown feathers of different shades that blend well with his typical surroundings.

Teeing Off with the Team

The Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course and The Valley restaurant recently welcomed two new integral members to their team.

JAMES SEARSON

James has joined Pearl Valley as Director of Golf and Club Operations from Parkview Golf Club (one of the oldest golf clubs in South Africa), where he was General Manager for six years. Born in Cape Town, he moved to Durban with his family at a young age, where he soon discovered his passion and talent for the game while trying to emulate his father and older brother. He commented on his return to the area: “I first played the course at Pearl Valley with my father almost 20 years ago – my appointment feels very much like a homecoming. I am extremely proud to work with and represent the wider team here, particularly as we have just been ranked as the Top 3 Golf Course in South Africa for 2023 by SA’s Top 100 Courses.”

A fully qualified professional with extensive global golf industry experience, James completed his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Louisiana in 2011 while representing the college golf team at the highest level. He has also completed a Diploma in Club Management and Golf Directorship and has had Class AA category full membership with the PGA of South Africa since 2017.

James is a people person and possesses a wonderfully warm and engaging personality. With his experience, attitude and skill set, he will not only enhance the member experience but will also take Pearl Valley to greater heights, ensuring it reaches its goal of becoming the most desirable golf club in the country. His favourite hole on the course is the 9th, which he describes as “a fantastic, challenging Par 5 – one of Jack Nicklaus’ gems.”

HANNA DUTTON

Hanna has been appointed Director of Food and Beverage at The Valley Restaurant, bringing her a wealth of hospitality experience. Having run a successful events and catering business for many years and overseeing the frontof-house operations of several golf clubs, she has an intimate understanding of the entire restaurant offering and what is needed for it to perform at its highest level. Her initial focus is on the guest experience and improving service delivery at all outlets (bar, restaurant, halfway house, pool, conference venue, etc.). We have no doubt that with her charming and friendly disposition, Hanna will quickly win over staff and residents’ hearts.

Heyday Shows their Love

Val de Vie Estate's beauty emporium, Heyday, donated 700 environmentally friendly and reusable sanitary towels to selected organisations in our Valley. Valcare, the Val de Vie Foundation's implementation partner, identified several organisations, including Athlone House of Strength for Abused Women and Children in Paarl. Berna Stofberg, Heyday's Assistant Manager, explained that raising awareness of period poverty (the lack of access to sanitary products) was crucial as finding a way to give back. "Some girls in South Africa miss school because they cannot afford sanitary products. We are glad that, in some way, we can be part of the solution," she said.

In years gone by, the Cape Winelands was primarily known for its heritage wine farms, spectacular vistas and agricultural industry. Fast forward, and the area is now known for various craft produce, exceptional restaurants and a bustling adventure industry. Artisans lovingly produce a variety of fare, including cheeses, bread, spices, ice cream, chocolates, gins, brandies, and many other products. At the same time, restaurants in the region offer exceptional menus and incredible views. Cape Winelands' distilleries and wine farms compete with the best in the world in terms of product and experience.

The adventure industry has grown in bounds with many premier mountain biking, road cycling and trail running events hosted across some of the toughest yet breathtaking terrain where high mountain peaks, colourful vineyards and blue skies form an incredible backdrop against which to explore the area. With such a variety of world-class trails and routes, established infrastructure, and off-the-trails experiences, it is no wonder that the region attracts vast numbers of local and international visitors (often as competitors) to the adventure sports offering – including the ABSA Cape Epic Grand Finale at Val de Vie Estate on Sunday 26 March 2023.

There are many options for visitors looking to explore the area by public road. For those who choose the solitude of the mountains to compete (or escape), the offering is world-class, with a vast number of trail options across many picturesque farms and establishments accessed through several trail network permits. Before 2022, access to trail networks was generally based on a permit system issued by a single trail network, often organised around a town or city. This changed when several trail networks, landowners, venues and establishments formed the Wine Lands Permit. This annual permit represented a first for the industry with access to all partner trail networks for a yearly fee represented by a single, handlebar-mounted board. Not only is the distance of trails covered unparalleled, but so is the variety of terrain and disciplines made possible by the networks. The inaugural 2022 Wine Lands Regional trail permit included nine trail networks spanning nearly 1,000 kilometres of trails from Wellington in the north to Helderberg trails in the south and Stellenbosch in the west to Grabouw in the east, with three new trail additions in 2023. #ULTIMATEPERMIT

WORDS BY LORAINE HADFIELD, VAL DE VIE FOUNDATION ADVISOR & HOMEOWNER

MICHAEL SEITZ

One rainy day while on vacation in Franschhoek in 2021, Michael Seitz and his wife Laura decided to step into a local real estate agency to escape the bad weather and see what properties were available in the area. They were introduced to Val de Vie Estate and fell in love with a home on Pearl Valley, on which they made an offer and took occupation in January 2022. Originally from Germany, the two snowbirds' plans of commuting between Europe and South Africa quickly changed to them spending a lot more time on our beautiful Estate.

Michael's day job is businessman and entrepreneur, but his real passion is painting. Back in Germany, he decided to paint and sell some of his pieces on behalf of an independent cancer charity. His fame quickly spread, and his artworks are now valued showpieces in homes across his country of birth. He decided to replicate the model for South Africa, but this time offered local employment by opening MS Artist Gallery in Huguenot Square in Franschhoek (directly opposite Woolworths). Sixty percent of the sale price for each painting is guaranteed to go to one of three local charities, and the Val de Vie Foundation is proud to be a recipient. The Val de Vie Foundation funds support our marquee education programme, @Home Learning.

Michael's work is fresh and contemporary and speaks of his love for the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. By supporting the MS ArtistGallery, you can choose to have the funds go directly to the Val de Vie Foundation, for which we are very grateful to Michael.

LAURINDA BELCHER

Laurinda, originally from Cape Town, has lived on Val de Vie Estate for the past seven years with her partner Zian. She was a kindergarten (Early Childhood Development) teacher in Hanoi, Vietnam, before becoming a full-time artist, inspired by the playful nature of the inner child. Her work explores how early childhood experiences shape an adult's understanding of the world.

Recently she found herself missing her creative roots – the classroom and child development. "Not sure how I could contribute and not knowing where to start, I looked at my immediate environment and connected with Lorraine Hadfield from the Val de Vie Foundation. Starting with a simple conversation, we immediately got along, and she recommended volunteering with the Foundation Phase Learners at Ronwe Primary just behind Avondale."

Laurinda will be facilitating creativity in practice with the Grade R class. Twice a week for a few hours, the little ones at Ronwe Primary can create and explore for the sheer enjoyment of self-expression and assist them in feeling supported, encouraged and loved.

We are delighted to have Laurinda support the Val de Vie Foundation and our wonderful local farm school. The Val de Vie Foundation will provide art materials to support her programme.
