t is incredible to look back at everything that has happened on Val de Vie Estate since our last edition with Prince Harry on the cover: the rebranding and integration of the Jack Nicklaus designed Pearl Valley Golf
Course with Val de Vie, the completion of the Pearl Valley Hotel, the completion and occupation of the Polo Village apartments, and the commencement of construction of the bridge over the Berg River. This year, we look forward to hosting the final stage of the biggest mountain bike race in the world, and to welcoming all mountain bikers to explore our new trails. African Rainbow Capital’s investment in Val de Vie was also a significant milestone and we take a closer look at Patrice Motsepe, its visionary founder. HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco is not only one of the world’s most recognised and glamorous personalities but she is determined to save lives, and to make a difference to children’s lives all over the world. During the past year, our own Val de Vie Foundation, has taken shape and has begun to make its first impact on our beloved Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. We believe this will complete the circle in our holistic approach to development, and help to realise the changes we want to see. I hope you enjoy the 8th edition of the Val de Vie Magazine and come and visit us in the valley of life.

Trophy list “The world is in perpetual motion, and we must invent the things of tomorrow.” Inspired by the words of Madame Clicquot to her grandchildren, we have compiled a list of luxury for which to be on the look out this year.
Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso The flawless sophistication of fine watchmaking meets pioneering innovation. Jaeger LeCoultre has nurtured a rich history with polo since the creation of the great Art Deco classic, the Reverso watch of the early 1900s. When British officers in the Indian Army were reluctant to damage their watches during matches, this special model was developed to protect the glass of the watch while playing polo. To meet this challenge, the patent for a “wristwatch that can slide on its base and flip over on itself ” was officially registered in 1931. And so the creation of the reversible case, which was very often personalized, came to represent the bond of history and shared values between the Maison Jaeger LeCoultre, and the sport of polo. With one movement that drives two dials, the steel Reverso Tribute Duoface displays two different time zones. The highly original blue tones create a contemporary character that will delight lovers of unique, yet discreet, objects with proportions made to flatter delicate wrists. A timepiece for the world traveler with an eye for bespoke finery. www.jaeger-lecoultre.com

Strauss & Co presents South African greats on home soil It is an auction truism that even in gloomy times the beautiful, the rare and the collectable will always attract discerning buyers. Bucking trends in a softening art market, Strauss & Co posted a record turnover of R215 million in 2016, the highest combined income achieved by the company in a single year since its inception in 2009. The outstanding result is a testament to Strauss & Co’s capacity to bring quality work to the market, and its ability to achieve a sell through rate of over 80%, at its four live auctions in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In November, ten works by Alexis Preller, many unseen for decades, went under the hammer for the first time in the secondary market at Strauss & Co’s Johannesburg sale. Amongst them was the complexly unique Space Angel, a high relief gesso work depicting a disembodied aquiline head from 1971, fetching R6,593,440. The highest amount paid at a Strauss & Co auction in 2016 was R10,572,240 for Irma Stern’s 1947 Still Life with Lilies, a colour drenched study of orange tiger lilies and a Buddha figure. The price is consistent with earlier Strauss & Co results. In 2013, the artist’s Magnolias and Fruit from 1947 sold for R9,662,800, and in 2010 a bidder paid R11,140,000 for White Lilies, a bountiful floral study from 1936. Stern’s pedigree at auction is now a matter of statistical record: she is ranked alongside modernists Georgia O’Keeffe and Louise Bourgeois as among the ten most expensive women artists sold at auction globally between 2005 and 2015, a rating that Strauss & Co helped secure. Stern’s portraiture is also highly esteemed by collectors. Strauss & Co predicts a high price for Stern’s 1942 piece Young Man with Orange Turban, with an estimated value of between R12,000,000 and R16,000,000, which is to go on auction in Cape Town this year. www.straussart.co.za

But the huge event that is the latter-day Absa Cape Epic is some distance from its humble origins. The vision for the event was sparked in 2002 when founder Kevin Vermaak was taking part in the La Ruta de los Conquistadores stage race in Costa Rica. In 2003 he was back in South Africa after eight years in London, and a year later in 2004 the first edition of the race took place. The first Absa Cape Epic was held over 785km between Knysna and Cape Town. In spite of its ambitious scale it was a relatively humble affair: 550 riders took part in 275 two-person teams. Participants rode bikes with 26-inch diameter wheels and most were on “hardtails” – with front suspensions but not rear. Receiving one Star will get the world of fine dining to turn their heads. Be the first from your home country to receive a Star, and everybody suddenly sits up and takes notice. instrumental in the development of his culinary genius, where many an hour got spent honing his clandestine food fetish. “At the age of six I had created my own little restaurant in an empty old bus that was left standing on blocks on our farmstead in Middelburg,” he tells me. “When we were having dinner and watching Riaan Cruywagen on SABC, I would rearrange my little dining room and it would be a proper dinner in my restaurant, with a setup to represent a glorious dinner.” At primary school, Jan Hendrik’s creativity and business acumen had him earning some pocket money. “I used to weld flower vases from old exhaust pipes (yes, I did!)” he laughs, “and sell it to the neighbours’ wives. V - culinary the coal stove, and then it would burn because she would quickly do her hair. The smell of burnt toast would fill the house. Today we burn toast at JAN’s to recreate the experience of what I had as a child. We serve it with cheese and explain it to our guests from all over the world – this is proper coal stove burnt toast. There are lots of little things I still take with me.” Jan Hendrik’s rendering of his childhood tale elicits varying opinions from amongst his clientele. “Some people think, ‘O-o-h-h, it’s too burnt but it’s a taste that has given me goosebumps’. If fellow South Africans or Scandinavians come to visit, I tell them the story and they literally go ‘You have just taken me back to my childhood with that taste.’ Then you kind of know, ‘We’ve done it; this is a success.’ We have a similar set-up at JAN’s to recreate the burnt toast, with a big flat grill and a thick black iron top. Fortunately, we have extraction to pull the smoke out of the restaurant!” Opening JAN, his self-titled restaurant, in Nice three years ago was the realisation of a lifelong dream. “We had to decide what name to put on the restaurant. I had a vision – just three letters with the ‘A’ pointing upwards, resembling the Eiffel Tower in France. Historically, the name JAN has come such a long way for us as South Africans and I thought, This is perfect – the name is short and trendy.” Things didn’t just fall into place straight away – the language barrier proved to be quite challenging. “I once ordered duck breasts and they delivered a whole live duck, just before service!” he laughs. “I thought ‘I need to learn this language!’ I had to run down to the butcher shop and get some duck breasts at a very high price. The language is complicated. I figured out you shouldn’t think in English and try to speak French. You should think in French. I had my first dream in French and that was a good sign.” Jan Hendrik admits that JAN is an immense success, offering a premium dining experience with the best of fresh produce. The menu consists of four to six courses, and mosbolletjies, Cape seed loaf and biltong have been part of the menu since day one. “We would like to incorporate more South African flavours into the menu. It’s a fine dine restaurant, so you need to constantly challenge yourself – how can you do boereboontjies on a fine dine plate? You don’t have to; you can serve it in a bowl. We make our own biltong. We bake rusks every second day and give it to our guests as a little gift with their breakfast. There are distinct South African elements. Rooibos tea is val de vie

Everyone has time for this before and after bed. Don’t take a pill for every ache and pain either. Try walking at least 10,000 steps a day. Let your body work it out on its own. And of course if you also eat properly and hydrate your body will thank you for giving it what it needs to thrive, even at an old age.”

The time of your life New-age retirement has nothing to do with growing old and everything to do with dusting off one’s dreams and getting the most out of life. Val de Vie Estate offers a range of lifestyle options and investments that enable residents to do just that. Quality of life and peace of mind is paramount to the estate’s ethos. In partnering with one of South Africa’s retirement specialists, Evergreen Lifestyle, Val de Vie is planning a unique retirement village designed to harness the exceptional qualities for which the estate is renowned. Recreating the open door, secure lifestyle of yesteryear, the village will offer a unique blend of luxury homes and facilities, complimented with nearby vineyards, golf, polo, equestrian, mountain and other lifestyle pleasures. he retirement boom has hit and today’s seniors are reshaping what it’s all about. They view retirement
as a whole new opportunity to engage with family, community, and the world with vigour and purpose. In short, they see retirement not as the end of life, but just the beginning. Work is soon to begin on the construction and development of Evergreen Village at Val de Vie Estate. Established in 2008, the Evergreen Lifestyle business is the country’s first national retirement brand, boasting a reputation for building and managing exceptional villages and providing a full suite of services in some of the most beautiful parts of the country. This will be the sixth village in the rapidly expanding Evergreen portfolio and its thoughtful design reflects the latest international trends. Arthur Case, CEO of Evergreen Lifestyle, understands better than most that today’s retirees are independent and confident, and therefore highly rates innovation, self-reliance and changes made for the better. “Progressive retirement village operators are setting new standards in their services, care and facilities,” says Case. “Many international golf developments and leisure resorts are opening retirement villages to leverage the tranquillity and expanse of their surroundings, as well as their club facilities. Whilst Evergreen gets to do so in arguably the most beautiful valley in the Cape, we bring the know how of a mature and experienced specialist retirement operator into the equation. This includes the vital components of health care, together with a clear understanding of what today’s retiree wants and needs.”

Once you’re up there, though, you can’t help but become captivated by the beauty below that extends to the horizon,” he says. “I would go so far as to say that flying over the Maldives could be the cure for those with flight jitters: looking out over coral reef formations and multiple palmladen islands serves as the perfect distraction.” While the views from above are to be savoured, they certainly don’t disappoint after touch-down. White beaches beckon visitors to sink their bare feet beneath the surface of the sun-kissed sand and to bask in the reality of their surroundings. “Despite feeling fatigued and needing to adjust to the climate, the moments that followed were indescribable – the serenity on the island was unbelievable,” continues Ryk. “The first of the two resorts I was fortunate enough to visit, exceeded my expectations. I spent four blissful days at Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives and to be honest, I didn’t want to leave.” This destination, located on the South Ari Atoll, offers its visitors an all-inclusive package which covers all meals at three of the resort’s restaurants, excursions and activities from fishing and water sports to sunset cruises, as well as sublime pampering in the form of daily spa treatments. “Because the package is comprehensive, you really don’t have to Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives

Absolutely blooming Val de Vie Estate has seen some of South Africa’s most exquisite weddings. The classic feel and open space of the venue provides a beautiful canvas for any starryeyed bride to live out her dream. In this colourful collaboration, Val de Vie Events and Fleur le Cordeur combine their passion for planning and creating beautiful events and the love of flowers to inspire you to ad a little drama to your look this season. By exploring new possibilities and taking floral arrangement to a new level, florist Heike le Cordeur encourages the bride to get out of her comfort zone, stretch her imagination and make a statement. We invite you to indulge in the following pages which are draped in so many flowers you can almost smell their sweet scent.

modern day Rachel Ruysch, Heike le Cordeur exchanges paint for real flowers to create her masterpieces. Like any true artist, Heike draws inspiration from her surroundings
and translates it into her creations. “Anything from international fashion and architectural trends, to a beautiful texture I’ve seen, something someone may say, a colour combination that inspires, a flower I haven’t seen before, my mood, and even things my children collect in the garden, inspires me,” she muses, and adds that she always has an idea of colour and concept before she starts an installation. “I never know exactly where we’re going with the installation, or what it will look like, until it’s done.” A combination of abundant and opulent blooms with exquisite dresses are used to celebrate the uniqueness of women and flowers. Feminine and bold, delicate yet strong, detailed and colourful, each installation is a bouquet of elements that women and flowers share. The new year brings a new season, and with it, exciting new colour trends to inspire. Greenery and foliage have gained momentum over the past year and taken centre stage in 2017. Easy to complement, and useful for adding bulk to arrangements, greenery can also be the hero in your palette for a fresh and natural concept. “Green symbolises ‘new life’ or ‘new beginnings’ and that excites me!” says Heike.
Fleur le Cordeur Heike has always been incredibly passionate about whatever she takes on; she takes something on with all her heart. “I learnt from my mother, Johanna how to embrace beauty and combine it with creativity. When the opportunity presented itself, I grabbed it with both hands.” Whilst pregnant with her daughter, Indya, Heike realized she would need to make a change and she decided to leave her corporate job and do something more flexible. A good friend who knew her creative background contacted her and asked if she would arrange the flowers for her weddings. Within 6 months, she was booked out a season ahead. “It has been one incredibly blessed journey, and I love every second of what I do. My team is amazing and we honestly have so much fun.” She admits there is a lot of pressure in the events industry, and it is a lot of hard work but when you’re doing what you love, it is all worth it. With a flower in her hand, Heike is always flourishing. Web:www.fleurlecordeur.co.za

Polo with a purpose There are very few of us who have not been touched in some way by cancer. Breast cancer is its most common form in women of all races with a lifetime risk of 1 in 29 in South Africa, according to the 2011 National Cancer Registry (NCR). In each case, there is the story of a fighter, and a will to win the battle against the disease. As a prelude to the Pink Polo event and an opportunity to give a voice to their stories, we were honoured to meet, and host, three beautiful women, at the Polo Club Restaurant, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. We’d like to share the three amazing stories of these three inspirational women who showed tremendous strength and faith in their fight to overcome their cancer. Words by Marinique Viljoen

After we had to postpone our wedding by a year, I decided that I would never again put my life on hold for anything.” She realized that if ever she was going to live life with every breath she had left, she could not allow any limits to be placed on her life, not even by herself. Since her diagnosis, Charmaine’s outlook on life has changed profoundly. “Life has truly become more

I didn’t want to wash my hair because it came out roots and all at the slightest touch; I wanted to keep my hair for as long as I could. As I eventually shared the news of my diagnosis with my hairdresser and asked her to shave my head, her face became drenched with tears.” It seems that this was a turning point for Felicity. She sits up straight and shares, with intense excitement, “I have a wig for every single outfit in my closet!” After all Felicity’s chemotherapy sessions were finished, her doctor said she had to go for radiation; twenty-five sessions, to be exact. “I was fish-positive, which means that the breast cancer had a chance of relapsing again.” She exudes sincere appreciation, “The St Stephen’s Oncology Centre prepared me for the journey that awaited me, and they really walked the path with me.” Felicity’s friends started a group in her honour, and called themselves ‘The Conquerors’. “Through my struggle a great initiative started. The ladies at work go for their annual mammograms now. My life has become a mirror image of what I have gone through, and how I can give back to the Valley and the community.”
Celebrating Felicity Joseph
Meet Felicity Joseph, also known as “The Pink Lady”. She is a life sized Tinkerbelle. A tough cookie wrapped in layers of strength. Enveloped in a spirit of adventure, she is wonderfully untamed. A fierce female force to be reckoned with. She is bold in her purpose to stand out. Daring and unapologetic, she takes life in her stride.

Celebrating Miriam Moses
Meet Miriam Moses. A modern woman of understatement, with a zest for life! One looks at her, and sees the best of two worlds, a soft personality that hits a sweet spot with, of course, a precious gem hidden deep within a storm. When you listen closely, her heart beats a drum; you can hear her song, for she sings joyfully all day long.

Best Dressed Couple went to Nandi Ndlovu and Buntu Ngcuka, while Best Dressed Male went to blogger and presenter Shiraz Reddy – a difficult choice given the high level of style and sophistication displayed at this year’s event. I tried to design a lifestyle, and not just decorate a space. I am most proud of my living and/or dining room area because I took a unique approach to this space and had a lot of fun. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before. The living room also contains a lot of pieces made especially for my unit, such as my dining room table, coffee table and chandelier. I worked with local artists to design a very unique chandelier, which is the centrepiece in the room and includes hints of copper and pastel colours. This room is the epitome of my style, and I think it is something totally unique but also practical.
