To di(n)e for Chances are pretty good that if you randomly stuck a pin into a map of the Cape Winelands, the nearest restaurant would rank among South Africa’s best. But why trust a pin when you have us? Here is our pick of five of the best restaurants in the area. Words by Rebekah Kendal

Pierneef à La Motte Pierneef à La Motte proves that traditional Cape cuisine need not be passé or homely. With a name inspired by South African landscape artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, this Franschhoek restaurant gives tradition a contemporary twist. Quirky porcelain chandeliers offset the staid oak furnishings and chef Chris Erasmus, who has a passion for farm-style food, gives old favourites a modern makeover. Expect the menu to be littered with Cape favourites such as bokkom (salted dried fish), snoek and pickled ox tongue – but don’t be surprised when they exceed your expectations. Take afternoon tea beneath the large oak trees: nibble on trout-filled pancakes or milk-tart-flavoured chocolate truffles and wash them down with a glass of La Motte sparkling wine. Or splash out on the Chef ’s Table – plan your menu and wine selection with the chef and enjoy exclusive fine dining

simplicity. Lots of glass gives the predominantly white colour scheme an ethereal quality, anchored ever so slightly by earthy wooden tables. The menu is obstinately simple, with starters based on colour (red, green or yellow) and desserts based on flavour (bitter, sweet, savoury or sour). In keeping with the restaurant’s organic farm-to-fork ethos, most of the fresh produce is collected from the estate’s large food garden, and the rest is sourced from local farmers. But don’t mistake the simplicity for a lack of sophistication – this restaurant has bushels of it. Guests staying at Babylonstoren can join the chefs in the open kitchen and go on a tour of the herb garden. Do you speak Champagne?

T

here are many great sparkling wines in the world, South Africa’s Pongrácz among them. But nothing

says ‘celebration’ quite as successfully as Champagne – the name reserved exclusively for bubbly from the chalky soils of France’s most northerly vineyards, located around

a full spectrum of flavours. This partly explains the

Champagnes have a natural acidity that winemakers in most other regions can only achieve by picking underripe grapes – and underripe grapes never acquire desirability of Champagne – but it doesn’t quite explain

Prestige at a price Prestige cuvées are the ultimate expression of a Champagne house’s style, and priced accordingly: usually double the price of vintage Champagne and triple that of NV. The most famous is Dom Pérignon, the maiden 1921 vintage launched by Moët & Chandon in 1936. Vintage 2000 is locally available for about R1 500. Louis Roederer created Cristal in 1876 for the private consumption of Russia’s Tsar Alexander II. Publicly available since 1945, the current release costs about R3 350. British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill’s favourite Champagne was Pol Roger, whose prestige cuvée was named in his honour. The 1998 is available for about R1 900. Veuve Clicquot’s La Grande Dame (about R2 000) is a fitting tribute to the widow of François Clicquot, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, who invented the riddling rack. From a tiny, walled Pinot Noir vineyard, Krug’s Clos d’Ambonnay 1998 costs about US$2 200, making the locally available Grande Cuvée NV seem a bargain at ‘just’ R1 800.

16

why 15 big Champagne houses account for 70% of sales, while more than 2 000 smaller vignerons battle it out for the rest! Whether you’ve discovered fantastic artisanal Champagne or want to invest in the biggest brand to impress your guests, it’s worth understanding a few of the French keywords. Blanc de blancs means that the base wine is 100% Chardonnay, while blanc de noirs indicates it was made from dark-skinned Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier. Most Champagne is a (white) blend of Chardonnay and Pinot, to which is added a tirage of sugar and yeast, causing a second fermentation in bottles sealed under crown caps to trap the carbon dioxide. Remuage takes place at least a year later: the bottles are gently ‘riddled’ into an upside-down position to trap the dead yeast cells (lees) in the neck. Then comes dégorgement: the neck is frozen and the crown cap opened so the lees deposit shoots out as a solid pellet. Finally, the bottle is given a dosage of wine and sugar syrup, determining whether the Champagne will be extra brut (extremely dry) or doux (sweet), with brut, extra sec, sec and demi-sec in between. Most Champagnes are labelled NV or ‘non-vintage’ because producers like to blend in wines from previous years to achieve perfect consistency. In exceptional years, some houses declare a millesimé, in which case the vintage displayed on the bottle guarantees that it contains less than 15% of older wines; also that the wine was matured on its lees for at least three years prior to dégorgement. Lees contact is what gives Champagne its distinctive toasty flavours – so the more time on the lees, the richer the wine.

Why the swing? The Chinese have a ‘gift-giving culture’, says one regular visitor to Beijing. ‘It’s a status symbol to be able to offer a friend or business associate a valuable gift. This could be a single malt whisky or a bottle of fine French first-growth Bordeaux wine. And now South Africa’s great red blends are being regarded as worthy gifts as well.’ val de vie

Food In keeping with the theme, pick old (tried, trusted and easy) family recipes. Choose dishes that can easily be pre-prepared, and quickly assembled and served. Oldfashioned smooth soups make excellent starters. For main course, good bets are summery savoury tarts or more hearty pies served with simple green salads (dressings on the side, mind!). One that fits this bill exactly is Nigella Lawson’s ‘Granny Lawson’s Lunch Dish’ – check Google for the recipe. And for dessert? Fruit-and-chocolate fondue, of course! Your guests will

Sharing a lifestyle

al de Vie Estate is a sophisticated country lifestyle and an absolute paradise for me, my horses, dogs and sheep Japie..... As a Val de Vie Resident Property Consultant being here for 4 years, I have first hand knowledge and the experience to provide all the necessary information which a potential new Home Owner would like to know. As an avid animal lover my days in Val de Vie always start early in the morning, either riding my horse, Tahila, cycling with friends, running or training with Grant de Wet, one of Val de Vie’s personal trainers.

After 17 years in Pretoria, I decided to move back to Cape Town. I started in the Western Cape with Engel & Volker’s Estate Agency and after completing “payment of my school fees”, I started specializing in developments under the trading name of @ Beautiful homes.

Living on Val de Vie Estate, I aim to share the lifestyle with clients and their Lifestyle ambitions.

Your service and knowledge from the outset was amazing, but the trait that most impressed us was your degree of self motivation and ability to very quickly grasp and interpret our needs in terms of our budget and the type of property we required. This in the end made our decision on buying in the limited time we had available, very simple and stress free.

ACHIEVEMENTS • During 2010, I managed to capture a 37% market share of all property sales by all Agencies, including the developer in the Val de Vie Estate – i.e. of all transferred property transactions. • I received the Award for Highest Annual Sales and Most Sales achieved in one year in the CCH group for 2010, 2011 and 2012. • I managed 24 sales during the first semester of 2011 – the most in the CCH group. • Only Consultant in the Diamond category in 2012 CCH group.

I will never forget overlooking the lake when we bought our first stand from you at Val de Vie 18 months ago. Your relaxed approach made it so easy and comfortable going through the decision making and purchase process with you. As you’ve seen, our house has turned out to be magnificent, and here we are again, looking to you to find us a second stand on this little piece of heaven, Val de Vie. Living abroad, we were concerned that it would complicate matters, but you made it all so straight forward and simple, exactly what we needed .

becoming president of the most powerful nation on Earth) and was stood up by several editors who couldn’t figure out why they should give up their time to meet him. I wonder if one day I’ll be writing about how I met the president of South Africa, just a few weeks before she launched an unusual opposition party called Agang. But these wild thoughts gallop away as I walk onto the small stage, wrestle with the sound system (which shrieks and crackles) and introduce a woman who began her long walk to politics in the days of Steve Biko, and whose achievements are buried in the battle against the country’s dark past.

BRIDGING THE GAP The daughter of primary-school teachers, Ramphele was born in Limpopo province and her life, like the great river, has twisted and tumbled over the past six and a half decades. She is a medical doctor, a student of anthropology and commerce, an author, a struggle icon, a former university vice chancellor, an ex-managing director of the World Bank and (until recently) a big player in corporate South Africa. Under apartheid, she was detained and banished to Tzaneen, where she began opening health centres and doing extensive community work. She has given birth to three children, one of whom died soon after birth and two who carry Biko’s surname. Over the years, she’s travelled from black consciousness to what she now calls South African consciousness. At the heart of her vision is a desire to put citizens at the centre of the country’s politics; to realign the balance of power and to change the electorate system in such a way that the power shifts from the party bosses to the people of South Africa. She completely opposes political deployment.

At the same time, there has also been a swell in civil activism – consider e-tolling and the opposition to the so-called ‘secrecy bill’. Agang will hope to bite into this vein. In short, if there was ever a need for a dose of Obamastyle hope and a political realignment, it’s now. In a time of weakness, people are more willing to believe. In many ways, Agang is like a religion: it doesn’t have all the answers and is asking South Africans to have a little faith. In her book, Ramphele – who lives in Cape

One could easily pay more for a ‘decorative’ image by a formulaic painter, from a furniture shop, say, which will have next to no resale value, than for a work of greater aesthetic depth that will sell better. Estate living Is an investment in a secure community a secure investment? Words by Ann Ellis Brown

It has been said that the idea of secure communities draws on Sir Ebenezer Howard’s 1898 vision of self-contained and self-sufficient communities or ‘garden cities’ in the UK. Howard’s ideal included within the radius of the garden city, or on its green-belt outskirts, forms of industry and agriculture to provide work for residents – a vision of today’s ‘live, work, play’ ideal espoused in South Africa by developments such as Century City in Cape Town and Melrose Arch in Johannesburg. Today, the terms ‘secure community’ or ‘gated community’ cover a wide range of developments, from urban security complexes to lifestyle estates such as Val de Vie.

But he left it to Chad’s coach, the formidable Graham Hill, to do the pushing. ‘He’s hard-core,’ Chad confided admiringly in London. ‘I’m actually scared of him – but in the end it paid off.’ It was the same for soccer star Amanda Dlamini, 24, captain of Banyana Banyana. Her single mom, Sibusisiwe, a secondary-school vice principal, left Amanda’s soccer progress to her and her coach. ‘But Mom supported me and gave me a sense of responsibility and discipline which helped me all the way,’ says Amanda. ‘My young brother and I had chores – washing dishes, sweeping, making tea for her when she got back from work. I wasn’t allowed to go to practice until they were done, and if we didn’t do them properly there was trouble! It taught me to work hard to get results. I’m so grateful for that.’

A child does not need exceptional genes, expensive tuition or exhausting regimens, just consistent, unconditional love Singer, songwriter and model ChianoSky seconds that. ‘My mom encouraged my dream and supported my decisions from the start,’ she says between promotions for Believe, the follow-up single to the hit Sick Sick from her debut album Hungry. The only pushing the 18-yearold had from single mother Charisse Nel was ‘in the right direction, when she enrolled me in the National School of the Arts, and encouraged me to take part in music activities, shows and competitions. She allowed me to express myself, discover my strengths and set extraordinary goals for myself.’ Would ChianoSky, Amanda and Chad have achieved the success they did had their parents pushed harder for it? In the pool, on the field or on stage, they may have; but away from those, would ChianoSky still be the ‘focused, grounded and humble’ young woman described by Leon Haasbroek of her agency, Star Model Management? Would Amanda have been the ‘confident, respectful, appreciative’ young woman she considers herself to be today? Would Chad have been the ‘cheerful, balanced’ 20-year-old his sister Bianca Matos, 34, describes, one who ‘loves Sunday family lunches and rowdy games of PlayStation FIFA 12 with his brothers and brother-in-law’, and good-naturedly adopts the role of designated driver on occasional nights on the town? One wonders. Parental pushing can produce material success but too often it comes at a high personal price. 58

V - nurturing success For every star who may have emerged more or less unscathed by the pressure of zealous ‘momagers’ and ‘dadagers’ (Andre Agassi, Venus and Serena Williams, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber), there’s a constellation of others who have suffered burn-out along the way (Britney Spears, Macaulay Culkin, Ashlee Simpson). But without pushing, how do you motivate a child? ‘Encourage intrinsic motivation, for the child to find the passion and energy themselves to be successful in some area,’ urges Dr Susan Stillman, US director of education at Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence Network, which now has a representative in South Africa (Avril Kidd, 082 779 6299). Stay away from rewards – these are extrinsic motivation and parenting experts have shown they don’t work in the long run, Stillman says. ‘Positive descriptive feedback is useful: tell children what exactly they did that you liked, and this will motivate them to do more of this kind of thing.’ Let children know that perseverance leads to success, advises Steyn. ‘My son would get frustrated when he couldn’t advance to a new level when he plays games – I’d have to tell him that he can do it, and should keep trying until he gets it right! That it’s okay if it’s hard and he struggles, and it doesn’t mean he should give up. He should keep practising, then it will be easy – like when he learnt to crawl and then walk.’ Also help children commit to the activities they start, she says. ‘If they start an extramural activity, encourage them to commit to it for at least half a year, so they get the feeling of coming through the hard patches and enjoy the success of effort and determination.’

Whose life is this anyway? When it comes to career decisions, allow your children to choose what they would like to do in life, based on their talents and gifts. ‘Self-esteem is reinforced when they know they are good a particular things,’ Steyn says. ‘Allow them to figure out what they are good at

l DON’T do things for them that they could do themselves; learn to hold back. l DO give them chores so they learn responsibility and the importance of work. l DON’T keep them so busy that they have no time to do nothing but daydream occasionally – that’s important too. l DO encourage critical thinking – teach them to ask questions, research solutions and make decisions.

Ask them to think of other ways they could have done it. l DON’T praise their talents and abilities – studies suggest this makes children afraid to try things and risk losing their status if they fail. l DO allow them to make mistakes and take small everyday risks once they’re ready (riding a swing, catching a bus) – it’s how they become resilient, learn and grow.

Landing in Kigali, I can’t help but reflect on the turbulent history of Rwanda and the nearly 800 000 people who died here during the 1994 genocide. The thought contrasts vastly with the carefree holiday we’ve been having so far but it stays with me only until ‘the land of a thousand hills’ reveals its beauty. We’re staying for two nights at a place called Governors’ Camp, and our main objective is to trek up the Virunga volcanoes and seek out the Rwanda mountain gorillas. With heavily armed guards assigned to protect us against poachers and rebel soldiers, we hack our way into the thick forest, literally clearing a path as we go. val de vie

t’s nine in the morning, an hour before opening, and the Cape is delivering one of those rare days

when crisp meets clear, underscored by windless warmth. The L’Ormarins gardens and grounds offer a magnificent setting; Franschhoek’s Groot Drakenstein Mountains form the backdrop of the Rupert family’s showcase farm, the main estate in a group of farms known as much for their splendid Sauvignon Blancs as their automotive elegance. In the courtyard of the country’s premier motor museum, a two-tone blue-and-white 1956 Ford Country is being towed out of Building 3, back into storage. Its place will be taken by another beauty, and I’m about to head into one of four grand halls to see what’s inside. I’m excited – this museum is to motoring what Wembley is to football or Moët is to Champagne.

The birth of an idea An hour earlier, the museum’s curator Wayne Harley had explained the collection and the journey from a few cars in a Highveld railway shed to the magnificence of L’Ormarins. Harley (the irony of his name is not lost on him) came with the initial Heidelberg consignment of cars, and there’s nobody – save perhaps for Dr Johann Rupert himself – who knows the story better. It all started with Dr Anton Rupert, Johann’s famously philanthropic father, a man in love with all forms of transport and with the history of South Africa in general. In 1974 he helped set up a transport museum in Heidelberg, Mpumalanga, focusing largely on trains. To the assortment were added various vintage cars, and by 2003 it was an important collection.

After high school, I studied musical theatre and later moved on to studying film. Modelling was a pretty natural extension of my career.

Do you prefer acting in theatre productions or in movies?

What is it like to be judged and criticised? While I was studying to be an actress, I was taught how to become a performer, but not really how to deal with criticism. Through my years of working I had to teach myself the skills

Die Burger KersFEES Val de Vie Estate hosted the first open-air Die Burger Christmas concert last year at the Polo Pavilion. More than a thousand visitors enjoyed a picnicstyle show, relaxing on blankets while children ran around the field, singing. Pasella presenter Lynelle Kenned and actor Alvin Bruinders were on MC duty, while performing artists included Kurt Darren and the KD Band, Elvis Blue, Anna Davel, Anrika, Willem Botha, Bianca le Grange and Larry Joe Live. The South African Youth Choir held the audience captive, followed by Elzeth Germishuys, Andre de Villiers, Elle Amor and musical director and composer Grethe van der Merwe. All proceeds from the event will be directed to Die Burger Christmas Fund, an initiative that started 56 years ago and which aims to uplift and educate orphaned youngsters in struggling local communities.

ormer Springbok wing Breyten Paulse, Olympic swimmer Ryk Neethling and rally driver Gugu Zulu added a touch of celebrity

glamour to the field of almost a thousand riders who took part in the inaugural Kia Val de Vie Estate Mountain Bike Challenge (presented by ASG) – now an annual event at Val de Vie in support of the local Rotary and of the Vrede Foundation for young cancer sufferers who would benefit from the race. The success of the event, the first of its kind on the estate, can be attributed to the support of the local community. The 60km race crossed 21 Western Cape wine farms, and was won by Charles Keey of Team Blend Properties. He claimed line honours ahead of Team USN rider Jacques Rossouw and Adriaan Louw of Team Contego. Phelia Burger was victorious in the women’s race, followed by Desiree Loubser and Tandi Kitching. In the 30km event, junior riders Louw Kriel and Catherine Colyn took the men’s and women’s titles for Team Contego/Sludge’ish and Bizhub-FCF respectively.

Top Toks ’n Tjops presenters Janina Oberholzer and Breyten Paulse enjoyed a great day’s racing in the Cape winelands. Above left Pro rider Charles Keey (Team Blend Properties) won the 60km race. Above right Women’s race winner Phelia Burger in action

Bubbly Sundays V

al de Vie Estate hosted its first market on 24 March

2013. The first market of its kind in the Paarl-Franschhoek valley was a great success and attracted more than 1 000 visitors to the estate. Now held twice a month on the Polo Pavilion’s terraces, The Market at Val de Vie showcases some of the region’s finest local produce in a spectacular country setting. Visitors have the opportunity to discover lovingly crafted goods as they enjoy the festive atmosphere. Eighteen irresistible food stands presented a variety of delicious home-made fare, from oysters, pies and gourmet delicacies to decadent sweet treats. There was no shortage of liquid refreshment either, with seven drink stations selling wine, bubbly, local beers and fresh juices. In addition to the tempting goods on offer, patrons were entertained by an exciting game of polo, chocolate and bubbly pairings courtesy of Pongrácz, and live music by Sven Blumer. Children were treated to a variety of fun activities, including a petting zoo organised by Zoo to You. Bazinga the clown also entertained kids with face paint and balloons, while toddlers loved riding around the tricycle track. For upcoming dates of The Market at Val de Vie, check out the events calendar at www.valdevie.co.za. val de vie

One in 29 South African women is diagnosed with breast cancer. If treated early, she stands a good chance of recovery. Educating women about the symptoms of breast cancer and the need for regular check-ups is vital to combating the disease. 90
