Welcome to the first edition of the Grapevine for 2019. The festive season is but a distant memory and 2019 has kicked off at a rapid pace. Words by Terry Keller
T
wenty eighteen was an incredibly busy year with tremendous expansion of the Estate which lead to the incorporation of new infrastructure as well as the upgrading of existing services. This was especially the case with our Estate Security, where the new Berg River Bridge and Gatehouse were added, access databases were amalgamated, and improvements were made to the two main gates with the addition of roller shutters and spikes. The two sections of the Estate were finally linked by road and the new state of the art The Yard complex was opened. So, what does 2019 hold in store for us? Right about now, a crystal ball would be useful, and my one has gone missing, but here are my predictions for 2019:
6 GRAPEVINE
The Yard will play a major role in centralising the
administrative as well as most of the health and fitness activities on the Estate. It is fantastic to see how many people are making use of the facilities that have opened and with the courts and jogging track still to be completed, The Yard will become even more busy. I am certain that it will become a hub for cyclists and runners to meet and start their rides and runs, finished off with a coffee or a smoothie at Reuben’s & Co Café.
E S TAT E M A N A G E R ’ S R E P O R T
ESTATE OVERVIEW The first Val de Vie Evergreen residents will move onto the Estate in May. In recognising that a much higher percentage of retired folk struggle with biometric finger print access, we will roll out some new technology in March called a “wave scanner”. This device scans the unique patterns on the hand and by waving one’s hand through the scanner, the boom opens. This will also prove beneficial to a number of residents and contractors who battle from time to time with fingerprint access. The wave scanner will not replace the finger scanners, but one in and one out unit will be installed at every gate across the Estate.
A great deal of effort will be put into fine tuning and rolling out the improved Estate Portal App that incorporates the access code generation module. It is vitally important that messages get conveyed quickly and accurately to residents, from power outages to bush fires, the App will replace the SMS messages that we currently send. The App will also be a useful tool to book a table in a restaurant or a squash or tennis court. Notices and newsletters will also be sent via the Estate Portal and be available on PC and smart phone. During this year the maintenance team will start with some much-needed road maintenance. Sections of road have been identified and these will be repaired and resurfaced as part of the long-term maintenance program.
These are but a few of the operational matters that we will be dealing with in the coming year to ensure that our Estate remains at the forefront of technology. Together with our dedicated team we wish each and every one of our residents a very prosperous 2019.

INVESTING IN THE VALLEY OF LIFE
2019 has started very positively with so many exciting properties to sell and rent in the Valley of Life. Words by Kelly Myatt from Cape Winelands Properties
I
am writing this edition’s report from our state of the art office at The Yard. I’m sure that most of you have visited and experienced the new facilities since opening in December. The Yard has truly taken the Estate to another level with one of the largest privately-owned gyms on the African continent, a new restaurant from one of South Africa’s most loved chefs, Reuben Riffel and a breathtaking 50 metre Olympic sized outdoor swimming pool. The Cape Winelands Properties team were extremely busy over the festive period with clients from South Africa and beyond. The short-term rental bookings at the Polo Village Apartments achieved the highest occupancy rate on record. There were many bookings for homeowners’ extended families to enjoy the apartments. The Polo Village offers a wonderful extension of your own home on the Estate to have your family close by yet still afford private time for everyone over the holidays.
The Acres development, located on the Pearl Valley side of the Estate, is selling extremely well. There is significant demand for larger plots which this new area is able to satisfy. A selection of smaller 700m² stands have also been sold to excited buyers. Our team can drive buyers into this area by appointment and there is a scale model in the Pearl Valley reception for clients to see and appreciate the layout of the new neighbourhood. At the time of writing the Polo Village Offices are at 60% occupancy with a very interesting mix of tenants. To name a few there are a GP, an estate agency, two attorneys and a health clinic. The business hub that was envisaged on paper several years ago has become a reality with stunning spaces for residents to conduct their businesses from. If you are considering relocating or expanding this year, please contact us to view remaining spaces.
Our highly experienced team are on hand seven days a week to assist with any property related needs. You can also walk in to any of our on-site offices to speak face to face with our agents. Homeowners or any other interested clients can register their interest at the email address shown below.

GOLF
THIS IS OUR YEAR This year is an important one for Pearl Valley Golf. The focus for our golf department is excellence through consistency. More time will be spent on getting the basics right and making sure we offer services that are expected from a premium golf facility. Words by Damian Wrigley
A
very clear 10-year plan is in place for the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course and we will continue to roll this out year on year. More time will be spent with members and residents to understand their views and requirements and to ensure we are ticking the right boxes. This year we will be offering some exciting golf events at the club, such as the BCX SuperSport Shootout in May, the Captain’s Charity, Ladies Open and Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day. Another event we are proud to host for the second year is the Mercedes Benz Trophy. Now onto some course matters. The goal for 2019 is to finish capillary lining of all the green side bunkers. Focus will then shift to the bigger fairway bunkers on holes 1, 10 and 11. Our aim here is to reduce the size of these big traps to cut maintenance time and costs. This will not make those holes any less difficult but merely cut out the unnecessary size. Pending project budget approval we would like to then reshape the first section of the 12th hole. The mound needs to be dropped and the start of the fairway needs to be wider. This change will assist in showing players the line off the tee, be safer for players waiting for the green to clear and also reduce the potential for balls to fly right into properties. Exciting news we wish to share, and a real game changer for us, is our newly approved turf grass nursery. Our new site stretches just over 10 000 square meters in size, allowing
14 GRAPEVINE
us to grow rough, fairway and green sod all year round. Approval has been given for us to grow the grass in tunnels and a nursery this size allows us to sod out stressed and dead areas of turf when required. Some of you may have seen the big blue machine out on course, it is called an Air2G2 machine and it pumps air into the subsoil profile of the greens. Our greens are very healthy at present and I am pleased at how they are playing. Moving into winter, we will keep the Poa Annua grass varieties on the green at bay by managing their growing conditions to be less favourable. Our driving range in 2018 lost a great deal of turf due to the drought and is in desperate need of a re-seed and better pitching area. Onto clubhouse matters, our halfway house can look forward to an improved kitchen setup that will result in a world-class experience for our golfers, ensure fresh food and a better working environment for our staff. I would like to thank those of you who are constantly there for me and my team for providing us with constructive feedback. This helps us all and I can assure you we listen. The Club Committee is always striving to do more and be better. We are in a very fortunate position to have a very passionate and committed Ladies and Men’s Captains.

GIVE IT YOUR BEST SHOT The prestigious BCX SuperSport Shootout is now firmly entrenched as the premier celebrity golf and lifestyle event in South Africa, taking place on the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course 17 – 19 May 2019. Words by the Grapevine Team
T
he event is unique as it comprises an invitational field of top government representatives, high profile corporate executives and legendary South African sportsmen competing alongside one another whilst enjoying a relaxed weekend of networking and banter. In addition to the traditional Individual and Betterball nett competitions the main event comprises a Ryder Cup-styled team competition pitting the skills of Team BCX against Team SuperSport over two rounds of golf, making for an even more enjoyable and competitive environment. “The purpose of the event is to establish South Africa’s top celebrity amateur golfer in an environment which replicates a US PGA tour atmosphere. We very proud to be associated with Val de Vie and we look forward to showcasing the magnificent estate to the rest of South Africa and Africa
through our live television broadcast of the event on SuperSport,” says tournament founder and director, former tennis legend Kevin Curren. While a great deal of fun is had, old rivalries renewed and new business connections made at the BCX SuperSport Shootout, charity has, since the inception of the event 16 years ago, been at its core. To date over R24 million has been raised for a selection of charities which address pressing issues facing our country, namely education, poverty and skills development. For the first time since the introduction of the Ryder Cup format, the stage is set for a dramatic and competitive clash with the two teams heading onto the tee-box with an even score of two titles each.
We are excited to offer members a “taste of the Shootout” with a Pearl Valley Golf Club members’ golf day on Tuesday, 14 May. This is a great opportunity to play the course as it will be set up for the main event.

GRAND CHESS MASTER IN THE MAKING
The Val de Vie Foundation sponsored Raidan Michiel’s attendance at the South African Junior Chess Championship late in 2018. He received a full score of 7 out of 7, placing him in first place on Board 4. To celebrate, the 9-year old was invited by Renier Swart (Sales Director of the Val de Vie Group of Companies and Managing Director of Val de Vie Construction) to play against him on the new outdoor Chess Board at the Polo Village Offices. They played a tough two games, with Raidan winning both times. “We are so proud to have Raidan in our Valley and foresee really big things for him”, commented Renier, “Raidan’s passion for the game of chess as well as his insight into the game is truly amazing. We are supporting a potential global champion here.”

10-year dream came true for Val de Vie Estate when Big Concerts announced earlier this year that Andrea Bocelli would be performing for the first time in the Western Cape, on Val de Vie Estate, as part of his South African Tour in April 2019. The polo field of Val de Vie Estate, enfolded by three aweinspiring mountain ranges, will act as the natural open-air amphitheater for the concert of the beloved Italian maestro. Set against a symphony of sunset colours, attendees of the exclusive event can expect a unique experience in one of the most beautiful settings in Africa. Andrea Bocelli has recorded 15 solo studio albums of both pop and classical music, three greatest hits albums and nine complete opera. For his latest release ‘Si’, and at the centre of the new record is a spine-tingling duet between father-andson, as 20-year-old Matteo Bocelli steps into the limelight to duet with Andrea on ‘Fall On Me’ – a beautifully poignant song which reflects the bond between parent and child.
Andrea explains how his voice compares with Matteo’s: “Technically they are very different, but there is one thing that makes them most similar: the attitude. That characteristic way of expressing yourself through your voice. This makes Matteo and I very similar. But that is something that you cannot learn, that cannot be taught. That is something you are born with.”

HOW FAMILY VALUES COULD FUTURE PROOF YOUR LOVED ONES Our greatest wealth is not our earthly possessions, our greatest wealth is our families and the people we love. During a recent family holiday to Turkey we were fortunate to spend a couple of days in Istanbul. Istanbul is a beautiful city that has more than 2 500 years of history and culture, astonishing landmarks and incredible views. One evening while strolling through the bustling city streets, I was abruptly taken back to my childhood. There, in a small restaurant I witnessed the true value of multi-generation family wealth. In one small, and very popular, restaurant I saw a grandfather, father and grandson working side by side in their family business. While enjoying our dinner we were treated, by this family trio, to a level of service and hospitality that I have never experienced before. They did not treat us like customers they treated us like their long-lost South African family members that finally returned home. There was a sense of accomplishment and a commitment to their excellence. They were working towards a bigger purpose, allowing subsequent generations to become stewards of this proud family business and built on a legacy that has been passed down for more than six generations. I was born in Naboomspruit, a small farming town in the northern part of South Africa, and I was privileged to grow up on a farm with a loving family. My father was a successful entrepreneur and he was adamant about involving me and my younger brother in the family business. From a young age we were working side by side, learning and developing our entrepreneurial skills. Unfortunately, he passed away when we were young. He intrenched in us an unmistakeable ethic of being proud of what you do, we also learned that time is precious and it shouldn’t be wasted on trivial matters. I have always been fascinated by the dynamics of family business and especially why many European
family business are successful for multiple generations. In an article a friend wrote a couple of years ago, he referred to a model that is still commonplace in businesses in Germany and has been for more than a century. An ethos dictating that return on capital at all costs cannot be the principal and only goal of a company. Contributing to society plays an important part and so does the notion of being proud to be associated with what you’ve created and sold, especially after the sale. Autus Private Clients and Family Office subscribes to the same ethos. Our dynamic team of qualified and experienced wealth managers specialises in advising families, professionals and business owners on the transfer of wealth to successive generations. Autus is a family business that recognizes the value of family. We have a long-term investment horizon and see ourselves as stewards of a better future. For more than two decades we have been serving families all over the world and we are delighted to announce the opening of our Val de Vie Polo Village office in 2019. We trust that you will share the refreshing experience from time to time that many of our clients attest to, of being in control of your family’s financial destiny. THE QUEST FOR GREATNESS ‘Bars, we raise them. Lives, we change them.’ This is one of the mottos of the new FitLife Gym at The Yard, co-owned by high performance coach, John McGrath. Words by The Grapevine Team
“I
f you don’t find your purpose, you will lead a very ordinary life,” remarks 51-year old John McGrath, who has set out to positively impact the lives of 1 million people in his lifetime. Lessons during a tough childhood in Ireland taught him that giving up is never an option, and this mindset has opened doors to great accomplishments in various sports such as rowing, boxing and martial arts (he holds 5 belts in 5 disciplines). He believes that one of our biggest challenges is to be present in the moment, and when we master this discipline it brings significant change in our mental wellbeing. John McGrath’s clients include Olympic athletes and world champions across a multitude of disciplines. At FitLife Gym at The Yard, he coaches world class canoeist Christiaan Coetzee and Olympic gold medalist Ryk Neethling. “We journey with any type of individual, at any age, at any phase

Functional training requires involvement of the mind. As our biggest source of self-limitation, our mind holds back our most useful tool – our body. John and his team of highly qualified trainers have created an exercise routine that fits into people’s schedules, hence the formulation of group activities that require only 45 minutes per day, with impressive results. What is aesthetic medicine? “We fix proportions,” remarks Dr. Ledivia* “There is a great misperception about aesthetic medicine. Precision medicine on the other hand, takes care of the inside. Dr. Ledivia points out that 10% of chronic illnesses are embedded in our DNA, the other 90% are factors from our environment. “Wellness consultations are one of the most popular services we offer. Everyone is different, but we believe that a combination of a balanced diet, quality sleep, supplements and stress management make a significant difference to our lives.”
The aim of RevitaHealth is to make lifestyle changes that will bring a positive impact to each patient’s health and wellness. Through Epigenetic DNA Testing, a procedure offered by RevitaHealth, you will find out how your body reacts to certain stimuli, why for instance you have a sweet tooth or a disposition towards sleeping late. “Some chronic diseases can be prevented to an extent, providing that they are picked up at an early stage”, says Dr. Ledivia. * All aesthetic, integrative, anti-ageing regenerative and preventative medical services provided by Dr. Ledivia Strauss. **Dr. Rolene Strauss, ambassador for holistic and preventative women’s health through advocacy and the Revitahealth Women Summits, holds a MBChB degree from the University of the Free State. The Torpedo SwimRun Series now comprises three events, with the other two being Torpedo SwimRun Cape (on the Atlantic coastline) and Torpedo SwimRun Wild (in the Wilderness area on the Garden Route). SwimRun is different in that athletes run in their wetsuits and swim in their running shoes - there are no transitions like you have in triathlon. For the Val de Vie event though, wetsuits were not necessary in the warm dams of the estate. Nick Quenet finished the 10km course in a time of 44:20, negotiating 6 swims and 6 run segments across the length
and breadth of the well-known Franschhoek lifestyle estate. Matt Trautman, who last weekend podiumed at the Ironman 70.3 in East London, came second in a time of 45:49, and Alexander Koller from Sweden came third in 52:01. Alexandra Quenet finished in a time of 55:03, and as well as being in first place amongst the women, she was also sixth overall. Jessica Ashley-Cooper (56:19) and Liza Kingston (56:37) were second and third respectively.
Post-race celebrations combined perfectly with the Val de Vie Market hosted by Clark and Sons, which went down well with hungry athletes and the families and friends who came along to support.

WELLNESS
Consultation hours: Daily from 08:00 – 13:00 and Saturdays 08:00 – 11:00 except for the last Saturday of the month.
JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED Dr. Willie van Zyl, General Practitioner, has lived in Paarl for the last 40 years and recently opened a new practice on Val de Vie Estate.
T
Words by The Grapevine Team he convenience of having a GP within walking distance from one’s home, is a luxury not afforded to many.
Hailing from Napier, dr. Willie completed his studies at the University of Stellenboch (MB.ChB MBA) nearly four decades ago and has since looked after the medical needs of Paarl residents. Many Val de Vie Estate residents are already patients of Dr. Willie and those that have not yet been acquainted with him, will appreciate his kind and engaging manner. He describes his approach to the human body as ‘old school’ and believes that a GP needs to understand the patient holistically. “In my days we did everything because medical fields of specialisation were not as commonly available as
they are today.” Dr. Willie takes a keen interest in difficult diagnostic problems and sports medicine. “The decision to move my practice to the beautiful and safe environment of Val de Vie Estate, was not a difficult one. I hope to practice full day at Val de Vie towards the end of the year.” Dr. Willie and his wife, who is also his receptionist, will be settling in Val de Vie Evergreen in 2019.
Tips for winter: get you flu-injection as early as possible with a booster in September for the above 70-year olds. Sutherlandia capsule as a daily immune booster is highly recommended as well as fresh fruit and enough water.

A NIP IN THE AIR Thoughts of autumn summon up a picture of reds and russets as summer’s staid trees flare into a brief glory and tinted leaves rustle down to form a glowing carpet. But there is more to autumn than the changing shades of the foliage of deciduous trees and shrubs, magnificent as this can be, since there are many shrubs perennials and even climbers which reserve their best floral displays for the most mellow of seasons.

IN THE CASE OF A MEDICAL EMERGENCY ON VAL DE VIE ESTATE There are two emergency contact numbers for Immediate Medical: 071 501 6007 / 087 057 5900
Val de Vie Estate has a contract with Immediate Medical which is situated at the large round-about in Paarl and which operates a 24/7 office from where they dispatch marked vehicles with two medics and/or their ambulance. Immediate Medical have an understanding with ER24 and the Provincial Ambulance Service to assist when they are busy and vice versa.
Patients can contact them directly or preferably through Val de Vie Estate Security who will call the emergency number and organize for a guide to be available at the gate to accompany the emergency vehicle to the patient.
The advantage for calling Val de Vie Estate Security is that all the vehicles on site has the necessary equipment to assist and the drivers are trained Level 3 Emergency Aid to assist while the medics or ambulance is on the way. SECURITY REPORT
STATE-OF-THE ART 2019 Certainly took off at great speed for us with the Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour on Sunday 20 January and we look forward to a very full year at the same pace. Words by Louis de Jager
A
s our Estate grows on a number of fronts, the demand for a seamless biometric access control system for all those who enter and exit our gates is of paramount importance. The challenge we are faced with is faded fingerprints on different categories and ages of individuals. Planned for this year is the implementation Morpho Wave scanner which reads four fingers at time. In extensive on site and adverse condition tests this ticked all the boxes.
Up until now we have tested five different facial recognition camera systems but the necessity for a constant and particular lighting condition, especially in our robust contractor environment rules out the available systems. We are cognizant of the challenges in the political landscape as we approach May 2019 and we are planning accordingly in your best interests. Security wishes you a wonderful year and look forward to being of service.
The added advantage is that it is hygienic because the device is not touched at all.

enchant Design started in 2003 and has grown slowly but steadily to where it finds itself today - a beautiful store in the delightful little town of Franschhoek, in the Cape winelands of South Africa, with upstairs office, design-anddiamond office and photographic studio and a fully equipped workshop.
While Penchant Design has an impressive portfolio of bespoke designs, together with a wide range of beautiful jewellery, our passion has always been for daisies. The first ring we ever produced was a plain silver band with four engraved daisies on it, and our range of daisy designs just keeps growing. Everything from our more delicate little Blossom designs to the bigger pieces in our Daisy range. And each Daisy and Blossom design is given their own lady’s name - Diane, Catherine, Margaret, Phillipa, Elle and so many more. We love mixing different golds
and we love coloured gemstones, and our Daisy and Blossom designs provide the perfect opportunity to play with an endless range of colour combinations. Also, with our fully equipped workshop, we’re able to do a wide range of repairs, including simple cleaning, polishing and plating, sourcing and replacing missing or damaged stones, replacing or repairing damaged metal.
everything to meet your jewellery needs - a lovely shop environment where you can spend as much time as you like, well trained and welcoming sales staff to assist you while you browse, Jackie Hahn-Owner/Director qualified designers to help you realize your ideas, and a master goldsmith to turn your design into reality.
We have a lovely diamond office where you can consult with our professional diamond consultants and assist you to choose the perfect diamond for you. Here you can also view your Forevermark diamond inscription under a special microsope. The perfect experience all in one! And if you can’t personally make it to our beautiful Franschhoek store, we have a comprehensive online website at www.penchantdesign.com, where you can view and order any of our lovely pieces and have your selection delivered at your convenience.

Since our establishment in 1890, we have never lost sight of the personal attention required to deliver world-class advice and wealth management services. If there’s one thing we value above everything else, it’s our relationships. Our experience in growing these relationships through delivering long-term returns and protecting our clients’ wealth, means we can proudly offer you access to just a single asset class – the world. Global Investors Any prudent wealth plan should be global in nature. Investing globally has the advantage of allowing investors to better manage risk by diversifying exposure to any one geographical region. A global perspective affords the investor access to a greater number of higher growth environments than what is achievable, or available, in any one country. This global mindset gives one the ability to invest in the best businesses and instruments from around the world. Emil Visage on
