Out and about in Val di Fassa: a continual surprise Flower buds of infinite shades, in a sea of blades of grass blowing in the wind. Dense woods of fir and larch trees, so tall they almost touch the sky. Red leaves soaked in sunshine rustling in the crisp air; a prelude to winter. Gentle creaks of footsteps in the snow that break the silence of a wood in winter. And all surrounded by striking peaks of legends that enchant upon first glance like haughty and arrogant sovereigns. A walk in Val di Fassa is merited at all times of year. One step at a time, alone, before nature as beautiful as it is disarming, like a splendid picture postcard fixed in your mind. A walk to have with children, because nothing can beat a run that leaves you breathless, in a meadow in bloom, surrounded by gurgling streams a glinting sun in the presence of age old rock faces that whisper stories and legends to the imagination of the young. An easy and relaxing excursion to carry out with friends, stopping off in one of the picnic areas, while appreciating the flavours and scents of traditional local food products. All this and much more still to be discovered, following the paths in Val di Fassa that are outlined here. Pleasant walks on the valley floor, easily accessible to all, that meander through fairytale views and the villages of the valley characterised by their individual history and ancient traditions. Thirty three walks, explained in detail, to ensure you find your way only to get lost in a world of lights, colours and thrills that can only be found in the majestic environment of Val di Fassa.
INTRODUCTION The walks described in this edition are found above all on the valley floor. Some routes are easy and short, others are more demanding and require more time. Every path has been tried out, in order to provide a brief description, an indication of the length of the route and any points of interest to be found along the way. Nearly all the routes can be carried out in reverse or starting from different points along the way. Times, with the exception of the first route, are generous and have been calculated bearing in mind any short breaks for rests and to admire the scenery, appreciating the environmental and natural aspects that distinguish Val di Fassa.

This route allows you to climb the entire Val di Fassa partially along the track of the popular Marcialonga and partially along the cycling route. The track will be here described and the various connections to the villages in the valley will be indicated, so as to enable everyone to build up their own itinerary, also using elements of the other walks contained in this brochure. The itinerary begins in Moena. From Piaz de Ramon, walk past the bottleneck and head for Soraga, climbing the steps on the right-hand side towards Strada de Someda in the hamlet bearing the same name. Walk along the following Strada de Sèn Roch until you reach the small square in front of the church. At this point turn left and walk along Strada Frate E. Chiocchetti-Lenz. You will soon be outside the village. Continue along a relaxing little road, where you can sit on one of the many benches and enjoy the magnificent view over Moena, the underlying lake Pecé as well as Soraga, crowned by the Larséch pinnacles. You will then enter Soraga through Strada de Roisc. At the crossing head for Strada de Gherghele. At the end of Strada de Gherghele walk down towards the Avisio river. At this point you are leaving Soraga and along a mostly even path, interrupted only here and there by short slopes, you reach the Pont de Lejia (the church bridge), which is referred to the San Giovanni church nearby. Continue along the edge of the wood surrounding the slopes of the mount Cima Dodici. Keep walking on the side of the Dascé plain and you will easily arrive in Pozza di Fassa. From here you enter the Freina quarter through the street bearing the same name. Arrived at Strada de Meida, turn down to the left and then almost immediately to the right again into Strada Don Lodovico Gross. Past the bridge, walk along Strada de Grave, which leads to a foot-bridge connecting to the village of Pera. Before reaching the foot-bridge, turn to the right towards a small wood, made of fir and larch trees initially and then of majestic alders and willows. Walk past the Fraine ski-lift (on the left-hand side you will find a foot-bridge leading to Pera) and, walking on the wide open field, you will reach an area equipped with a playground for children. Walk past the wooden bridge on the left and the votive chapel on the right and continue along the dirt road along the Avisio river, surrounded by beautiful green slopes. Cross diagonally and reach a barren hillside. From here walk down to the bridge leading to the village named Mazzin. Continue on the forest road and remain always on the main track. After the first part, which is flat, you have to climb a short slope, which leads to a hillock equipped with benches and a wooden playground for children. From here climb again along large meadows 5
MOENA and then go down to a flat area. Continue on easy ups and downs until you reach Campestrin, arriving at the new polifunctional building PalaDolomites, where you will find a large plain space, also equipped with benches, tables and a playground for children. Here is a bridge which allows you to cross the Avisio river and climb to the village. Continue on the opposite side of the plateau and enter the wood on the side of the Avisio. In front of Fontanazzo you will find a third picnic area and, not far away, the bridge connecting to the village. Remain on the same road instead, walk straight on and you will soon reach Campitello, near the bridge Pènt de Sera and the station of the cableway taking to Col Rodella. Continue on the right-hand side along the edge of the wood and when you reach the Sorèghes plain, where the golf training course is, turn into the track of the Cercenà forest road. Continue on this easy and shadowy track. Enter Canazei through Strèda de Cercenà, where the football field and the playground are.

MOENA > MEDIL > PENÌA > MOENA
Once you have reached the southern side of the football field (10 minutes away from the centre of Moena) get onto the asphalt road leading to the hamlet of Medil (1,365 m). Continue walking along some steep sections, the last of which ends into Val, a large area covered by grassland. Cross the large meadows and continue on the plain across the wood. Once outside the wood, you are near Medil. Cross the village and go past the small church. The track becomes steep again. Keeping on the paved road (trail sign no. 517), head towards an old barn on the edge of the wood. Continue to climb (the slope is rather steep) until you reach Col da Moena, easy to recognise for its peculiar clearing on the left. On the plain you will find a crossing. Go down to the right along an uneasy path and then continue on the plain for a long section. Climb again a short slope and you will come out into the wide and sunny clearing of Pra Compert. Walk along the edge of the wood and go straight to the opposite side of the clearing. Here starts a series of very useful steps, which help to comfortably go down an extremely steep slope. The slope becomes then easier and in approximately 10 minutes you will reach the ancient settlement of Penia. Here you can have a break in the restaurant Malga Peniola (1,470 m). Go back towards Moena across the beautiful meadows surrounding Penìa. Then the gradient decreases slowly as you cross the wood. On the right, leave the forest road and turn into the narrow path that leads to the hamlet of Sorte (Sort). From here go back to Moena. 6

From Piaz de Sotegrava you walk towards the San Vigilio's Church, along Strada C. Dellantonio first and Troi de Sèn Vile then, a narrow alleyway closed to traffic. Once passed the church and the parking areas, you turn left and walk along a comfortable asphalt road that cuts 7
MOENA the meadows called Prato di Sorte (Pra de Sort). After a long flat stretch, the road fast descends towards the industrial estate of Moena. At the crossroad, you turn right into Strada de Prealon and, shortly after, you arrive at the football field “C. Benatti. Here you cross the main road and walk along the cycling route, in direction of Predazzo. Right after the last buildings on the right, you turn left, cross the bridge on the Avisio river and turn left again. Leave the cycling route, part of the Marcialonga racetrack, the popular cross-country ski marathon, to walk back to Moena. Along an easy dirt road, you get into the wood and walk along the course of the Avisio river. Leave the wood, keeping the right, and after an easy climb you keep on walking until you reach the asphalt road called Strada de le Pegne. Cross the street, walk along the road which passes nearby the playground and leads to the Navalge area. Cross the road that comes from the San Pellegrino Pass and, along the street called L Vial, you get back to the starting point in Piaz de Sotegrava.

From the centre of Soraga turn into Strada del Cioch. Continue along Strada de Barbida until you arrive at the quarter bearing the same name. Once you are in front of the little church, take the narrow street on the right, then turn right again, pass under an archway and turn left towards the mountain. Walk straight on for approximately 150 metres and then turn right. Go past the steep crag made of Val Gardena sandstone, whose red formations can be seen below in the gorge. The slope is very steep and difficult, but the part further up is sheltered by trees and 16
SORAGA climbing is therefore not so hard. Here and there you can see little clearings, covered by meadows. They become increasingly wide until you come out into open space and finally reach the plain near a little fir and larch wood. Here you absolutely have to take a break: to have a little rest and to look around. A small rise in the ground on the left is the perfect position for admiring the fantastic view to the south with Soraga and Moena and to the north with Tamion above, surrounded by grassland and crowned by the LarsĂŠch crags. Continue straight on through meadows bathed in sunlight. Some winding bends help to climb the slope. An old barn shows that you have arrived at Tamion. On the way towards the centre of the hamlet you will find two fountains where you can freshen up. To go back it is advisable to follow the same route in the opposite direction.

Once you have arrived at the stream Ruf de Pociole go straight and cross the bridge untill you get to a crossing. Go left onto the path that climbs rather steeply towards a grassy plain surrounding the meadows lying below Tamion, known as Col de Cicion. Here stands another beautiful crucifix. Continue upwards to the right along a forest road, which is very steep at the beginning and then becomes increasingly even as you go on and approach Tamion. You will pass by the junction with the path coming from Valongia on the right side. Shortly afterwards you will enter the village from the side of the church. The view from Tamion is fantastic: you can admire the whole Val di Fassa and the Cima Dodici opposite. To go back, you can either follow the same route or try to go from the end to the beginning along the Vigo - Valongia - Tamion route (see route no. 15 in the opposite direction). From the town centre, climb Strada de Piz to the town centre until you arrive at the covered fountain and continue straight on along Strada de Sent'Uiana. Go past the last house on the left and follow the little paved road leading to the boundary wall of the church, one of the richest buildings in the entire Val di Fassa from a historical point of view. The church dedicated to Santa Giuliana (there are documents witnessing that it existed already in 1237) is one of the most ancient church in the valley. On the outside there is a large figure representing Saint Christopher with a child, today hardly discernable. Inside are two precious works of art: the extremely beautiful frescoes on the apse, probably painted by artists of the Brixen's school and dating back to the second half of the 15th century, and the wooden high altar, carved in 1517 by Giorgio Artz from Bolzano. The large number of benches disseminated throughout the beautiful larch forest invites to take a break in such an enchanting corner of the region beneath the church; you can also visit the Austro-Hungarian War Cemetery. The cemetery hosts the bodies of 663 soldiers killed during the First World War coming from all the countries that belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time. From the hill behind the church, follow on the left an easy dirt path, until you cross another path which derives from Valongia. Follow this path that turns into Strada de Pontac, and then go onto Strada Rezia, and keep on walking until you get to the starting point of the itinerary.

VIGO The St. Giuliana's Church Santa Giuliana church is found on a site of prehistoric worship. Santa Giuliana is the patron of Val di Fassa (celebrated on 16 February). A sanctuary and a place of pilgrimage that has always been venerated, so much that, on this site, in the XIII century the holy buildings were two and in 1660 even four. First evidence of the church leads back to 1237, due to the first document that proves its existence and the two Romanesque apses found under the floor of the present presbytery built in 1452, when it was consecrated (on 23 July) by the bishop of Bressanone, as an enlargement, with a polygonal apse, of the primitive church. The cycle of frescoes on the apse dates back to this time, according to experts it is one of the most precious and well-preserved cycles, among those of a South Tyrolese nature, in Trentino. The church Is open only in summer, on scheduled days and times available at the tourist information offices of the valley.

Leave the centre of Vigo heading for Passo Carezza/Costalunga until you reach the bridge on the stream Ruf de Vael. Turn into Strada de Pontac, which follows the bank of the torrent. Go up the non-asphalt road until you find a crossing. Keep to the left and cross the foot-bridge over the stream a few metres uphill. A beautiful section of the panoramic path leads into a small valley. Continue on that road: at first it goes slightly uphill, then it evens up again and you will eventually reach an area equipped with benches, tables and a playground for children. Go to the other side of the clearing and climb down to the left along the asphalt road, until it meets an even road leading to Valongia. Head for the village. Go up to the little church dedicated to San Giovanni Nepomuceno and here turn left. Cross diagonally the Dolomites’ main road and descend towards the Grave, a succession of small valleys cut through by small streams easy to cross. After the second stream you will find a crossing: keep to the right. Then climb the slope (here the gradient is equally distributed) until you reach a non-asphalt road: here turn right. This beautiful walk connects the villages of Pera and Pozza to Vigo through a panoramic track unfolding at the lower foot of Ciampedìe between the wood and the meadows of Sorapoza. This amusing track alternates even sections and slight slopes and proceeds with pleasant twists and turns connecting the many little valleys going down through the wood. The path is mostly shady and is equipped with tables and benches placed in the most open and panoramic points. The route starts from Strada de la Taboca in Pera di Fassa. Leave the last few houses turning right and climb up to a bend in the dirt road: here turn left and walk through the meadows. After a first flat section, the gradient increases gradually until you arrive at the wood. POZZA > LOC. BAGNES > POZZA
Start from the San Nicolò’s Church, leave behind Strada de Meida and turn left onto Strada de Freina, which ascends and winds among houses and old barns. The road turns soon into a dirt path and a bit further forks. At the crossing take the path that slightly turns to the right, going through a sparse but bright grove. From here the path is flat until it joins the foot and cycling path that leads to Soraga. Now turn right, pass the water purification plant first and then walk along the bank of the stream Avisio, in order to reach the village of Pozza and the Town Hall. Cross Piaza de Comun, near the Town Hall, and turn left onto the road that runs along the stream Avisio, called Promenada enlongia Ruf. Keep on following the Ruf de Sèn Nicolò bank until you reach San Nicolò’s Church.

Start from the centre of Mazzin. Cross the bridge over the stream Ruf de Udai heading south, continue for a short while along Strèda de Col da Chieve and climb to the right along a dirt road. The little road, which goes uphill but with a moderate and well distributed gradient, leads to a bend on the road towards Muncion. Climb this road for approximately 300 26
PERA | MAZZIN metres until you arrive at the village of Ronch. When you are in front of a beautiful barn (the first building you find on the right-hand side), go downhill to the left along a country path, which will soon even up. Here you can take a pleasant walk through grassy clearings and groups of firs. The route is now downhill, running along the meadows below Muncion. Walk parallel to the track of the Via Crucis (the Way of the Cross) and, as the descent becomes steeper, leave the large track and turn right on the plain through the wood. As you come out, you will see an old barn which has been renovated. Go down to the left and enter the quarter Rualp. Past the bridge over Ruf de Soal, continue along Strada Ciadenac and after crossing the national road through Strada Jumela, you will arrive at the wooden bridge over the Avisio river. Cross the bridge, turn left into the road that follows the flow of the torrent. Climb a steep but short ramp and you will soon arrive beyond the bridge over the Avisio below Mazzin. On the left of the old San Floriano's church climb Strèda dò Ruf de Antermont and cross the second bridge over the stream bearing the same name. Turn left almost immediately. The path becomes immediately steep, alternating difficult slopes with even sections. You will reach the very small clearing known as Pian Pozata, characterized by a big rock and equipped with tables and benches to take a rest. After a few dozen metres, you will end up onto the Pian Pozata forest road. The slope continues: it is at first slight but then, as you walk along the rocky sides going on for a long section, it becomes steeper. Near the stream, the road turns into a small path again, as it was at the beginning. Cross the stream (it is quite easy to cross) and follow it down to the valley. Come out of the wood above the wide grassland area named Soracrepa, one of the most ancient settlements in Val di Fassa. Cross the Ruf de Soracrepa again and go down along the steep descent (walking poles recommended) towards the village of Gries, formerly an independent centre in Fassa and today a part of the Municipality of Canazei. Pass by the church dedicated to the “Madonna della Neve“. The eastern facade of the church is decorated with a large fresco of Saint Christopher. From here you continue on the left toward the parish church, take the stairs on the right and get back to the centre of the town by following the main road.

Cross the stream and turn right onto the easy white gravel road which runs slightly downhill into the wood. Cross the grassy Udàer clearing and go down to the national road below. Follow this road to the right for approximately 150 metres until you reach the guard-rail of the bridge over the Avisio torrent. Walk along the outer side of the guard-rail on the well-visible path covered with fine white gravel. Once inside the wood go through it along a winding path which is at first even and then goes slightly downhill. As the descent becomes steeper, remain on the main track and reach the asphalt road. Go up until you cross the bridge and follow the national road for another 30 metres approximately. Go into the wood to the right along the well-visible path unfolding at the foot of the imposing northern side of the Gran Vernel. The small clearings that you find on the way are well equipped with tables and benches. You find a first foot-bridge leading to the ancient Venetian saw-mill (one of the sections of the Ladin Museum), continue until the next foot-bridge. This path is also part of the educational trail called “L'ega te cuna” about the origins of water. You then get to a bridge on the right. Cross it to return to the lower side of Penìa passing between the Sonia hotel on the right and a beautiful farm-house with a barn on the left. In October 2018 Trentino was hit by extreme weather conditions that damaged some of our beautiful paths, and subsequently these had to be temporarily closed down.
