The intense activity carried out by the Ladin Cultural Institute has been extremely important in safeguarding and recovering expressions of the linguistic, cultural and artistic heritage of the local Ladin population. This activity has included both the promotion of the teaching of the Ladin language in local schools and additions to the collections of the “Museo La-
din de Fascia”. In over 600 square meters of exhibition space, as well as hosting different ethnographic collections, the Museum provides visitors with the opportunity to watch various themed films with original sound-tracks and subtitles in various languages using a multimedia support system which extends throughout the museum. THE L ADIN C A R N I VA L
SAN NICOLò AND THE KRAMPUS
The sounds and colours of Ladin carnival are overwhelming, especially thanks to the “facères” which are wonderfully carved wooden masks with peculiar features created by the valley’s craftsmen. Ironic performances, in the Ladin language, depicting episodes of everyday life, take place in January and February and are called “Mascherèdes”.
Every year, on December the 6th, the feast of San Nicola, an ancient tradition takes place in all the villages of the valley, which is awaited with anxiety by the local children. Accompanied by two angels, San Nicolò roams the streets of every village to free them of the “krampus”, scary diabolical creatures.
AND
T H E F L AV O U R S O F T I ME S GO NE BY
Upon entering the homes of the children to hear their prayers and good intentions, he brings little gifts and sweets for them. In the days before San Nicolò’s arrival, especially in the evening, there is a hunt for the “krampus” who like to frighten and chase the people they meet, playing tricks on them and worse!
A holiday in Val di Fassa cannot be considered complete if you haven’t been tempted by the local cooking. Ladin cuisine is also the star of the gastronomic event “At dinner with the fairy of the Dolomites” which takes place every year in March in Moena, also home to the famous “Puzzone”, a typical cheese with an intense aroma and a strong flavour.
