EMT (Emergency Medical Technology) Applied Technology Diploma Limited-Access

Paramedic Technology Technical Certificate This program adheres to all current standards and regulations established by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the State of Florida Department of Health/Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, and the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Profession.

The EMS degree program is designed for students who desire a career in out-of-hospital emergency medicine. The program will prepare the student for state board certification or national registry as an emergency medical technician and a paramedic. Through a comprehensive program consisting of theory, clinical and field internship, the student will develop skills for assuming the role of basic and advanced life support provider. Students must successfully complete the state board certification for Emergency Medical Technician before admission to the Paramedic Certificate Program.

Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) diploma and Paramedic Certificate students are encouraged to continue their studies for the A.S. degree. To earn the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) degree, a student must complete the EMT diploma and the Paramedic Certificate as well as the general education and elective component.

General admission procedures for this program are found in the Admissions section of this catalog. The Division of Allied Health provides information about specific admission criteria.

The EMT Applied Technology Diploma requires scores in reading, writing, and math components on the PERT test or equivalent scores on other state approved entry test (CPT) for a minimum admission requirement for REA 0017C, ENC 0025C, MAT 0028C, or EAP 16020C, EAP 1640C and MAT 0028C. The Paramedic Certificate is a limited-access program. Admission to Valencia does not imply acceptance to the Paramedic Certificate Program; students must apply and be accepted into the program.

Florida-certified paramedics who have completed a Floridaapproved paramedic program will receive, through transfer, applicable credits for Valencia’s Paramedic Certificate program.

A minimum grade of C is required in all courses to meet prerequisite and graduation requirements. Any student admitted to the EMS program who fails or withdraws from any two EMS courses (can be the same course or two different courses) must petition the Health Sciences EMS Program Committee for re-evaluation and readmission. Students will be allowed to petition no more than one time.

Students are strongly encouraged to consult a Health Sciences advisor for assistance in determining the best education plan for their career goals.

Several Florida public universities provide opportunities for A.S. degree graduates to pursue a bachelor’s degree. All of Valencia’s A.S. degrees will transfer into the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degree offered at UCF’s regional campuses, as well as other universities. Students who want to continue their education should contact their university of choice for acceptance of this degree.

For students who are interested in pursuing UCF’s B.A.S. degree, 36 credit hours of general education courses will be required. Students will also have to fulfill the state’s foreign language requirement, which is two years of the same high school foreign language or two semesters of the same college-level foreign language.

Valencia College Program Guide for the Associate in Science Degree in Emergency Medical Services Technology and

Technical Certificate in Paramedic Technology The Associate in Science (A.S.) Degree in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has three parts. The first part is the Applied Technology Diploma in EMT (which is explained in the Program Guide for Emergency Medical Technician – EMT). The second part of the degree is the Technical Certificate in Paramedic Technology, and the third part consists of the General Education and Elective courses required for the degree. To earn this degree, all three parts must be completed. The EMT Diploma must be completed successfully as a major requirement for continuing to the limited access Paramedic Certificate; however, the General Education and Elective courses for the A.S. Degree can be completed at any time.

For your official Valencia record, you may declare that you are seeking the Paramedic Certificate or the A.S. Degree in Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The Valencia Application for Admission serves as the application for the A.S. Degree in EMS while there is a specific program application with application deadline dates for the Paramedic Certificate.

The Health Sciences Admission Committee selects a limited number of students twice a year. The admission requirements that must be satisfied prior to submitting an application to the Paramedic Technology Program are: ______ 1.

The current estimated total cost for the Paramedic Program (42 credits) including tuition, special course fees, and associated expenses such as background check, immunizations, uniforms, and certifications is $5500. This total does not include the costs for books or for the EMT Program or for the 20 additional credits required for the A.S. Degree in EMS. (The estimated costs for the Paramedic Program will be less for the student who recently completed the EMT Program at Valencia and already has the required background check, drug testing, immunizations, etc.)

HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAMS GUIDELINES for ALL LIMITED ACCESS PROGRAMS EXCEPT THE B.S. IN RADIOLOGIC AND IMAGING SCIENCES Valencia’s Health Sciences programs are offered through the Divisions of Allied Health and Nursing which provide information about specific admission criteria for the programs. The Health Sciences Program Guides, of which this is one, are developed for a specific academic year (August to July) and, as a rule, changes to admission and program requirements become effective at the start of an academic year; however, Valencia College reserves the right to make changes in admission and program requirements as circumstances require. If a mid-year change becomes necessary, it will be indicated in the information for the specific program on the Valencia Web site at http://valenciacollege.edu/west/health/admissionupdates.cfm.

Most programs have an application deadline; some do not. If a program application deadline falls on Saturday, Sunday or a Valencia holiday, the deadline will become the following Valencia business day. Health Sciences program applications are available at www.valenciacollege.edu/health.

To submit an application to a Health Sciences program, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

You may apply to a maximum of two limited access Health Sciences programs within a 12-month period; however, enrollment is limited to only one Health Sciences program in a term. A new program application is required if reapplying for admission. Having previously earned a college degree does not grant you an advantage in admission to a Health Sciences program that does not require a degree for admission nor does it exempt you from taking the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) if the TEAS is required for admission to the program.

All communication from Valencia relative to program admission will be via your Atlas e-mail address. Written communication you initiate with Valencia staff should also be via your Atlas e-mail account and should include your full name and your Valencia ID number.

BACKGROUND CHECK, DRUG TESTING, IMMUNIZATIONS AND CPR CERTIFICATION The Health Sciences programs include student clinical rotations in external affiliate health care facilities with which Valencia has contracts for student clinicals. The affiliates’ policies require that students serving in a clinical rotation have their civil rights intact and be free of specific offenses that would disqualify them for a student clinical. Thus, all students accepted to a Health Sciences program are required to submit to a criminal background check and drug testing and provide documentation of specific immunizations and CPR certification following acceptance to a program; the timeframe for meeting these requirements will be provided in the Orientation materials.

If you have a positive background check or drug testing, you may be denied enrollment in a Health Sciences program due to the inability to participate in a student clinical. If you have concerns regarding your background, you are encouraged to make contact with the Health Sciences Career Program Advisor.

MANDATORY ORIENTATION The mandatory program Orientation for accepted students usually is held four to six weeks prior to the program start date.

If accepted to a program, about two months prior to the start of the program, you will be notified via your Atlas e-mail of the mandatory Orientation program, requirements, and deadlines. The Orientation materials will give you the processes required to complete your background check and drug testing through a specific company, the immunizations and CPR you will need, your uniform requirements (if any) and other pertinent information.

TRANSPORTATION TO CLINICAL SITES If accepted to a program, you will be responsible for furnishing transportation to the community and/or hospital facilities used by Valencia for clinical practice.

The Applied Technology Diploma in Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) is a complete program and also can be the first part of the Associate in Science (A.S.) Degree in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), which has three parts. The second part of the degree is the Technical Certificate in Paramedic Technology, and the third part consists of the General Education and Elective courses required for the degree. To earn this degree, all three parts must be completed. The EMT Diploma must be completed successfully as a major requirement for continuing to the limited access Paramedic Certificate; however, the General Education and Elective courses for the A.S. Degree can be completed at any time.

The Paramedic Certificate is 42 credits beyond the EMT Diploma. It begins on West Campus each Fall Term (August) and on the Osceola Campus each Spring Term (January). The Paramedic Program is limited access which means more students want to be in the program than there are seats, and students are selected for the program by the Health Sciences Admission Committee. To apply to the Paramedic Program, you will need to hold a current Florida EMT license and meet the other program admission requirements. The A.S. Degree in Emergency Medical Services requires 20 credits in addition to the EMT and Paramedic coursework.

When you indicate for your official Valencia record, either on your Valencia Application for Admission or in a campus Answer Center, that you are seeking the A.S. For the purpose of the Emergency Medical Services Program, a “qualified individual with a disability is one who, with or without reasonable accommodations or modifications, meets the essential eligibility requirements for participation in the program." The Division of Allied Health at Valencia makes no preadmission inquiries concerning an applicant’s disability status. Emergency Medical Services is a practice discipline with cognitive, sensory, affective, and psychomotor performance requirements. Based on these requirements the following list of "Core Performance Standards" has been developed. Each standard has an example of an activity or activities, which a student will be required to perform while enrolled in the Emergency Medical Services Program. These standards are a part of the Emergency Medical Services courses and of the role expectation of a Emergency Medical Services professional.

These Performance Standards should be used to assist students in determining whether accommodations or modifications are necessary for the student to meet program requirements. A student who identifies potential difficulties with meeting the Performance Standards should communicate his/her concerns to an advisor in the Office for Students with Disabilities. The student has the responsibility to identify and document the disability and to request reasonable and appropriate adjustments. Determination is made on an individual basis as to whether any accommodations or modifications can be reasonably made.
