Been to a theme park lately? If you have, you’ve probably noticed how beautiful the general environment was. This was the work of a landscape and horticulture technician. With tremendous advancements in computer-driven technologies, the approach to designing and planning of land development has changed dramatically. To fully scape and construct attractively designed residential areas, public parks and playgrounds, hotels and resorts, shopping centers, golf courses and parkways involves many specialized skills and techniques. Valencia’s A.S. degree in Landscape and Horticulture Technology takes a well rounded approach offering specializations in both landscape and horticulture. The Landscape Specialization focuses on landscape design, construction, and maintenance and trains students to design, supervise, and manage exterior and interior landscapes.

The Horticulture Specialization is designed to prepare students for careers in both greenhouse and nursery operations, which includes instruction in greenhouse culture of foliage or flowers, and woody nursery production.

Drafting and Landscape and Design Horticulture Technology Technology Landscape and Horticulture Technology with Specializations in: Horticulture Landscape Associate in Science Degree This program is designed to prepare students for careers in the landscape and horticulture industries. Students may choose to specialize in two areas: landscape or horticulture. The Landscape Specialization provides for skills in landscape design, construction, and maintenance, which include instruction in constructing and landscaping parks, airports, communities, resorts, etc. Students are trained to supervise, manage, and design exterior and interior landscapes. The Horticulture Specialization is designed to prepare students for careers in both greenhouse and nursery operations and includes instruction in greenhouse foliage, flower and woody nursery production. Students are specially trained to operate and manage all types of plant productions, programs and facilities.

Graduates of specific programs at Orange County Tech Centers may be eligible for the award of credit in specific courses in this program. For information and requirements, visit the Valencia Web site at valenciacollege.edu/asdegrees/tech.cfm to view the articulation agreement.

Students are strongly encouraged to consult a career program advisor in the department office for assistance in determining the best education plan for their career goals.

Several Florida public universities provide opportunities for A.S. degree graduates to pursue a bachelor’s degree. All of Valencia’s A.S. degrees will transfer into the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degree offered at UCF’s regional campuses, as well as other universities. For students who are interested in pursuing UCF’s B.A.S. degree, 36 credit hours of general education courses will be required. Landscape and Horticulture Specialist This program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in the landscape and horticulture industries as nursery workers, landscape and horticulture workers and specialists. Areas of study include an understanding of plant physiology, growth, plant classification and plant identification.
