13.08.1869 King of the Val Gardena mountains conquered First ascent of the Sassolungo by Paul Grohmann
Paul Grohmann, born on June 12th 1838 in Vienna, was one of the most important alpinists of the 1860s and 1870s. From 1862 onwards, he turned his attention to the Dolomites, after climbing several peaks in Europe. His goal was to measure the height of the mountains with the help of his barometer. On August 13th 1869, in fact, Paul Grohmann together with the two alpine-guides Franz Innerkofler and Peter Salcher left to conquer the summit of the Sassolungo, until then considered impossible because of the dangerous rockfall and the long walking time. In his honour, the peak of the Sasso Levante in the Sassolungo group, 3126 metres high, was renamed „Punta Grohmann“.

This hike in the woods accompanied by the sculptor Ivo Piazza is a unique opportunity to discover the nature of Val Gardena in all its nuances. A walk in the woods creates a strong connection with the nature and the earth; it is good for the mind, body and soul. The experience will ensure a feeling of calm and a deeper sense of inner balance. Participants hike to Alpe Resciesa with the artist and watercolorist Markus Schenk, equipped with colored pencils and sketchbooks instead of the usual smartphone. Together they will look for a suitable place to observe the nature and everyone will have the opportunity to draw nature sketches, in order to preserve the memory of the beautiful landscape. Guests learn how to focus on nature and live an amazing experience surrounded by the Dolomites. All senses reach a state of relaxation that allows those present to disconnect from the everyday life. BURNING DOLOMITES S un s e t w a lk s
The most enchanted hiking season in the Dolomites begins at the end of September, when nature’s landscape offers bondless views celebrating the rainbow of autumn colors and the crystal-clear air. While the days are still warm, during the early mornings the paths are covered with frost, which wraps the colorful leaves laying on the ground, forming a cover like a crystal frame. A couple of cool nights are enough to color the larch woods with an intense yellow, which makes the entire alpine landscape shine and paints the mountain pastures with small colored spots. Every day in fall ends with a spectacular show called “Enrosadira”. The Dolomites alpenglow where the grey peaks of Sassolungo, Sella Group, Cir and the Odle capture the low sunlight on the horizon, turning into an intense orange degrading into a deep red, which lingers even after the disappearance of the sun. If you are lucky enough to stay in a hotel with a view overlooking the peaks (they are numerous), you will experience this perfect moment. Otherwise, our advice is to postpone the dinner and participate in the guided sunset hike that takes place in September, in order to experience the most enchanting view of the “Burning Dolomites” from up high.
