BËNUNI TE GHERDËINA! Val Gardena and its four seasons all in one magazine. These beautiful pictures depicting spring, summer, autumn, and winter may take you on a journey to the valley, yet it is the locals – the Gardenesi – who play an important role when you get here. Simply put, Val Gardena would not be what it is today without the contribution of its inhabitants. That much is clear to everyone. This is one of the reasons why numerous guests return to the valley year after year – and also explains why travellers who happen to discover Ortisei, Selva Val Gardena and S. Cristina for the first time also fall under the valley’s spell.

Adventure and landscape photographer Gürel Sahin and his wife Martha have a media agency in their hometown of Kaiserslautern. They are always out and about for projects and work, but the place they visit the most and like the best is South Tyrol. This is where Gürel’s career and passion for the Dolomites started. You could say South Tyrol has not only become their workplace, but also their second home.

Rockstars These mountains awaken a number of emotions and moments which are difficult to describe. It all starts when we first see their majestic shapes. An exercise in humility if there ever was one, leaving observers standing in speechless admiration. The mountains rise, gracefully, into the sky, their tips shrouded in a blanket of eery, mystical fog; on certain days, the summits are bathed in a golden light, the rising or setting sun’s liquid amber splashing across their surface. These giants may have many different faces, yet their effect upon people looking up from the foot of the mountains is always the same: a feeling of insignificance and smallness in front of their superiority. By ascending the mountain, however, our breath is taken away for a completely different reason: a stunning 360° view

which leaves us feeling invincible and gives us a pure

adrenaline rush. A feeling that can never be taken away.

Spring is in the air

chindesc

Spring, sorry, ansciuda, in this Ladin valley is a time of growth and blooming. Winter gives way to longer days, the sun shines brighter and the scent of flowers wafts in the air. There is an all-round positive energy which shakes off any remnant feeling of cold and lethargy. In the Vallunga, the first crocus blooms while cherry and fruit trees slowly awake at lower altitudes. Experts say ‘spring is in the air’ is more than just a saying: it is something which can be really felt. It is a combination of springtime sun, nature’s awakening and the happiness hormones serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline. The increasing light also reduces the sleep hormone, melatonin. In other words, people feel more alive and happier. Where to experience this phenomenon if not in the Dolomites?

Gherdëina PICTURESQUE SELVA VAL GARDENA

This sleepy village looks as though it has been plucked right off of a postcard, with the rocky massif of the Passo Sella reaching into the air in the background. The massif has something protective about it, and its silhouette rises northeast to Selva di Val Gardena and offers a perfect connection between the village and the Sellaronda at 1,563 m altitude. A pure ski paradise in winter, which connects the four Dolomite passes around the Passo Sella and can be explored in both directions, i.e. clockwise and anticlockwise. People can truly experience a piece of history when walking across the Vallunga. A wall, the remnants of the old Castel Wolkenstein, decorates the rocky wall of the Stevia mountain and is a gateway into a faraway fantastical land.

TRADITIONAL S. CRISTINA

While the centre of Val Gardena may be easy to miss at first glance, that does not make it any less important: welcome to the village of S. Cristina. Culture takes centre stage in this village, to the point that associations are alive and kicking here: the local band, a volunteer firemen service with plenty of history and plenty of choirs, to boot make up the vibrant village life. Its main choir, the Chor Sasslong, for example, has received countless awards for its performances. The cultural offer is complemented by a youth orchestra and the theatre association. S. Cristina is located on a hill and if you walk to the centre of the village you will reach the old parish church. It overshadows the rooftops of the village and is the centrepiece of many a postcard, framed by the surrounding majestic mountains. Speaking of mountains – above S. Cristina lies the Col Raiser, between the Odle Summits and Stevia. A perfect location to make the most of amazing skiing fun during winter and beautiful hikes during summer.

HISTORICAL ORTISEI

When driving from the Brennero towards Val Gardena, the first town which welcomes guests to the valley is Ortisei. An idyllic town which has plenty to offer: numerous cafes are the perfect excuse to while the hours away, while modern boutiques pull shoppers in with their interesting offers. The local ‘Museum de Gherdëina’ is a door to Val Gardena’s interesting historical facts; visitors can admire historical wood carvings, archaeological findings as well as old toys! What if you want to experience history itself? Simply follow the old ‘Troi Paian’ alta via towards the St. Jacob’s Church , the oldest church of

vintot

Val Gardena. Legend has it that birds flew up to the hill and

landed here. This was seen as a sign that it was God’s will to build his church here. The location offers a breathtaking view over the Sassolungo group: so beautiful you have to pinch yourself to check you are not dreaming.

beautiful valleys, shaping this unmistakable landscape. They attract tourists in love with the area and mountain enthusiasts season after season. The Val d’Anna is just one of many picturesque locations offering ideal conditions for a relaxing holiday for all ages. July is when summer really comes to the fore in Val Gardena. Countless families and couples wander across lush vegetation and bask in the warmth of the sun. Take the Senoner family, for example: Kevin and Malin, their daughter Lee, and their niece Sunny. They have decided to explore the Val d’Anna on this beautiful Tuesday afternoon. The bubbling brook guides on their journey, flowing this way and that way through a forest. The weary hiker can sit down and rest on numerous occasions, and families with children can stop and enjoy a playground with Kneipp pool. The excursion turns into a proper adventure for the entire family

Val d’Anna in winter is always a pleasant experience, regardless if it starts in December or January, as visitors will always carry fond memories of the valley during this season. After all, the real winter fun kicks off when the first groomed slopes from Seceda to Ortisei open. But how do you get to the slope on the Seceda, which is located at 2,518 m altitude? Simple: hop on the Ortisei-Furnes cable car, and then swap onto the Furnes-Seceda cable car. As easy as that! And before you know it you will be treated to a stunning winter wonderland experience of mountains and vast stretches of beautiful views as far as the eye can see. The great thing about this ski slope is that it coasts by a mountain hut as it descends into the valley. This means famished and tired skiers can make the most of a hot dish or one or two warm ‘Jägertee’. If it is a sunny day, bask in the warm sun on the deckchairs and make the most of Val Gardena during winter. As soon as the temperatures start rising and spring, then summer reach Val Gardena, summer fun starts all over again in Val d‘Anna.
