A view over the Heritage Site

THE DOLOMITES UNESCO VIEWPOINT

Location, location, location: this special map has been set against the backdrop of monumental mountains, allowing hikers to plan a very special trip.

Summer is when you can experience the Dolomites with all your senses in a unique way. The Dolomites come alive: you can hear them in the brash sound of cowbells, which happily graze on the fields; see them in the lush green and coarse grey of nature as you explore the area on foot. You can catch their scent in the fresh mountain air and taste them when you sample the unique and unmistakable Ladin cuisine. Yet you can also feel the Dolomites deep in your bones: as we said, you get to experience them in a unique way.

Summer rings in the hiking season: as soon as breakfast is over, nothing stops guests from getting on their way. One of the new beloved hiking destinations is the UNESCO Heritage Terrace. It was inaugurated during a festive celebration in occasion of the ‘10 years of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage site’ anniversary during the summer of 2019. But it is not the only terrace in South Tyrol. Indeed, the first one was built in 2015 and can be found on the Monte Specie in Dobbiaco. Even the Trentino region has recently unveiled two new terraces, and more are to come: the UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses five provinces, and terraces of this kind will be built across them to offer a small glimpse over a total of 142,000 hectares. The nine mountain groups are separated by vast distances but still present a uniform and holistic picture. The new, recently inaugurated terrace is located on the Mastlé, a stone’s throw away from the Col Raiser in S. Cristina. A beautiful hiking path takes both locals and guests to visit the scenic terrace which offers a breathtaking view over the Puez-Odle Nature Park. The circular structure was sustainably built into its surroundings: enter through an opening and head to the edge to see the silhouettes and names of the surrounding mountains – and their altitudes and location – depicted on a half-circular board. A brief hike to the summits of the Marmolada or Sassolungo – a moment to take things slow, offering a respite from your everyday troubles to admire and gaze in wonder at the view below.
