S. CRISTINA

A sun-kissed location in the heart of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by mountains and immersed in wild and untouched nature. The village is a paradise for families and is located in an ideal position, just a stone’s throw away from the extensive hiking route network. S. Cristina scores well even among winter sport tourists thanks to its direct access to the ‘Dolomiti Superski’ skiing carousel, the world-famous Sellaronda and the cross-country skiing centre on Monte Pana. While the infrastructures and features are state-of-the-art, the location has never really lost its rustic character. Traditional farmsteads as old as time, village traditions, and cultural gemstones are the perfect excuse to take a walk down memory lane, an exciting blast from the past to discover the Ladin universe one step at a time. Ortisei (Urtijëi) Ortisei is a multifaceted place, donning both exclusive as well as athletic outfits to show its visitors. The village, often described as the ‘capital’ of Val Gardena, is located at 1,236 m: a charming, alpine village standing out for its fashionable elegance. Centuries-old traditions, such as the local woodcarving craft as well as the Ladin lifestyle are alive and kicking. The fractions of San Giacomo, Roncadizza and Bulla just represent a smidgen of the cultural heritage waiting to be discovered. The village is located in an ideal position, as the lift facilities offer both sport and nature lovers easy access to explore the surrounding mountains both in summer and winter. GEOGRAPHY

Geography Val Gardena is a side valley of Valle Isarco and stretches from Ponte Gardena right up to Passo Gardena and Passo Sella, two Dolomite passes. Val Gardena – a Ladin valley through and through – includes the three municipalities of Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva Val Gardena: around 90% of the population speaks the Rhaeto-Romance language here. The fractions of Oltretorrente, Roncadizza, and Bulla belong to Val Gardena from a linguistic and geographical point of view, yet are actually part of the municipality of Castelrotto. The Derjon, the Ladin name for Rio Gardena, flows across the entire valley and is one of the most important tributaries of the Isarco. Val Gardena is surrounded by the Dolomites, among which the Sassolungo and the Sella Group stand out as veritable symbols of the valley.

9

HISTORY

History Not much is known about Val Gardena’s history. Finds testify to the existence of provisional settlements around 6000 B.C., set up by hunters during the warmer seasons; more permanent settlements are only to be found around 400 B.C. as seen when unearthing bronze fibulas, axes, swords and agricultural tools during the archaeological finds at the ‘Col de Flam’ in Ortisei. The first time the name ‘Ortisei’ was mentioned in an official document was 999 A.C. when the Bajuwarian Gaugraf (count of a district) Otto von Andes bequeathed the ‘Forestum ad Gredine’

woodland area to the Bishop Gotschalk vom Stifte Freising. Another milestone in Val Gardena’s history is the opening of the Strada della Val Gardena in 1856 10

as well as the start of operation of the steam train in 1916, built to meet the demands of Austrian troops stationed at the Dolomites’ border. Tourism started around 1850 when researchers and mountaineers discovered the mountain range. Winter tourism experienced an incredible growth at the start of the 20th century thanks to the locals’ active efforts. The 1970 Ski World Championships were one of the first sport highlights – and from that moment on, the development of this Dolomite valley went at the speed of light, to the extent that Val Gardena is now one of the most beloved holiday valleys in the Alpine area. Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva Val Gardena may very well be tourism beacons, but that doesn’t mean that traditions and customs don’t live on in the hearts of the locals. During the course of the year there are plenty of opportunities to catch a glimpse of the Ladin culture. One important local heritage, for example, is the beautiful Val Gardena costume, a local dress which is one of the most beautiful in the Alps; it’s worn – and admired – during special occasions, such as ‘Gröden in Tracht’.

AWARDS FOR GUESTS - LANGUAGE

Regular guests are always welcome If you keep on coming back to Val Gardena for your holidays, you’ll be rewarded for your years-long trust. Guests who stayed in an accomodation member of a Tourist Association in Val Gardena for the last 10 years (minimum) will receive a small present and a certificate

as an acknowledgement of their loyalty. All you need to do is contact the owner. Val Gardena is incredibly proud of its regular guests and is happy that so many holiday-goers happily return to the Dolomite valley.

The Ladin language ‘Nosta rujeneda de l’oma’ – i.e. the local language, in other words Val Gardena’s variant of Ladin. It’s a Rhaeto-Romance language that is only spoken in the four Ladin valleys around the Passo Sella – even though each valley has its own distinctive local flavour. It derives from the Latin left by the first Roman conquerors and a Celtic language, Rhaetian, spoken by the valley’s original inhabitants. Even in Friuli and the Grigioni canton in

Switzerland the Rhaeto-Romance language persists to this very day, surfacing as Friulan and Bündnerromanisch, the respective local variants. Ladin is a compulsory subject at school. To preserve this minority language, radio and television programmes are broadcast every day, complemented by the regular publishing of Ladin books, magazines, and newspapers.

TRADITIONS & COSTUMES

Traditions and their costumes Everyday life in Val Gardena is imbued with ancient traditions. Customs and celebrations take place all year round: as their original meaning often risks oblivion, retrieving and keeping them alive is crucial. Together with the Ladin language and craftsmanship, the local folk costume is at the very heart of Val Gardena culture. Its lavish decorations make it one of the most beautiful costumes in the Alps; the costume is particularly important as it identifies the social status of the person wearing it. The most beautiful costumes are worn during weddings. On such occasions, not only do they indicate the wearer’s social status, but also his/her specific role. In the Ladin language, the grandparents of a wedded couple are called nëinesc: grandmother (ava) and grandfather (nëine). Grandparents were distinguished in their dress sense by wearing white woollen berets called cazina; apart from this, their clothing resembled that of others of their age. Grandmothers usually wear a petticoat by the name of carsetl dala pinta, with very large sleeves buttoned low on the wrist: padded and 12

loose to the elbow and then tight above the elbow; a Damascus silk apron (gurmel fosch da ondes) covers the black skirt with numerous folds (sciossa). Grandfathers wear a shirt (ciamëija), a silk handkerchief worn around their neck (fazuel de sëida) and a gilet (camesëul de sëida): just like any other man of the area, they wear leather trousers (brea de pel). The long mantel which he carries with him is called bagana: you can also see the silk handkerchief around his neck at the back, thanks to a cut in the cloth of the mantel. The “ciauzei dal lac” are typical male shoes with laces. More information about Val Gardena customs and traditions can be found in the book entitled “Usanzes de Gherdëina”, available at the Tourist Offices in S. Cristina and Selva Val Gardena.

DOLOMITES - UNESCO

The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage The UNESCO is a UN agency. The World Heritage Committee within the organisation manages the appointment of Heritage Sites, which have to meet specific cultural and natural prerequisites to make it on the list. In June 2009, nine parts of the Dolomites became a

UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Puez Odle Park which stretches for approximately 10,200 ha across the three Val Gardena municipalities. This area counts as one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in the entire world; indeed, it has fascinated travel-

13

DOLOMITES - UNESCO

lers and artists since time immemorial. As if that weren’t enough, even geologists and researchers have been interested in the Dolomites for centuries: the mountain’s natural, geological and geomorphological importance is unique. As an exceptional wonder of nature, the Dolomites now belong to all people in the world, who are called upon to protect and preserve this area. Val Gardena has already pulled out all the stops over the course of the years to do the appointment justice: mobility in the area has been developed in line with green and sustainable standards, and farmers as well as landowners go the extra mile

to take care of the land. Indeed, even the steepest mountain meadows are industriously mowed and hay is collected by hand. The spacious woods that can be still be found here – and which enjoy that very same protection – offer an ideal habitat for countless animals and plants. Moreover, they protect us from landslides and mudslides. Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a great recognition but also a great responsibility for humanity, who is called to adopt a sustainable behaviour and respect important rules when it comes to the use of finite resources.

Tip: You can find the book on the topic ”Fascination Dolomites UNESCO” at the Tourist Offices.

Dolomites UNESCO Viewpoint Mastlé S. Cristina Val Gardena At Mastlé Alp/Col Raiser in S. Cristina Val Gardena the second Dolomites UNESCO viewing platform in South Tyrol was completed. The Dolomites are part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2009. In the Natural park Puez-Odle there is a selected viewpoint on the mountains: close to the top station of the Col Raiser Lift on 2200 meters above sea level there was recently realized a viewpoint, with the opportunity to admire the stunning alpine world of the Dolomites. The viewing platforms illustrate why the Dolomites are so extraordinary, namely their geological-landscape characteristics. The Dolomites UNESCO viewpoint at Mastlé/Col Raiser was realized after the model of Monte Specie/Strudelkopf near Dobbiaco, paying special attention to a sustainable construction. Considering the extremely sensible context there was created an object, which is closely bounded to the surroundings. The steel structure, where the index of the visible summits is located in the middle, was filled with existing soil and stones. 14

VAL GARDENA, A PARADISE

Val Gardena – a paradise’s true value A few simple rules help us protect the environment and its resources:

Always keep to the marked trails and paths; this helps prevent damage to the meadows and alpine pastures.

Do not pick protected flower species.

Respect the habitat of animals, do not make any unnecessary noise.

Do not light fires!

Do not litter! Please take your rubbish with you and dispose of it according to local regulations.

For dog owners: please keep your dog on a leash in the villages as well as on alpine meadows and in forests. Remove your dog’s waste with the appropriate devices.

Keep your distance from the herds and don‘t caress the grazing animals.

Camping with tends is prohibited in nature reserves. 15

VALLEY WALKS

Summer in Val Gardena Valley walks • Traditional farm crawl – S. Cristina Follow the signposts of the “Percorso dei masi tradizionali” from above the parish church in S. Cristina to walk by many mountain farms in S. Cristina, offering you a glimpse of a farmer’s life in Val Gardena. Take a real walk back in time on this informative and, yes, why not, romantic walk: you may well just see modern farmsteads, but handy information boards showing pictures from the time reveal what the buildings really looked like in the past. • Anna valley and Dialogue Way Starts at the valley station of the Seceda cablecar. It leads up a gentle incline reaching the children’s playground. Following the path, you get to the Café Val d’Anna (duration about 20 min.) Suitable for families. Return way as way there or crossing the meadow Pincan in direction of Col de Flam to Ortisei. Following along that foot path for 500 metres, the

path branches off in the direction of Col de Flam. The path, in a gentle incline, is characterised by works of art in porphyry and metal that represent dialogue in its various shapes and forms. That’s an amazing place to relax and get in touch with the nature. • VALLUNGA Walk on path no. 14 from the entrance to the Vallunga valley to S. Silvestro chapel. The walk slowly becomes steeper as you stroll through larch and mountain pine thickets. No worries, as you can rest on the many benches and tables places on the path: sit down, relax and revel in the unique view stretching out before you. The valley slowly becomes narrower as the vegetation predominantly turns to mountain pine groves. It then returns to its customary, wide expanse upon reaching the meadows. Continue walking until you reach rocky walls reaching to the sky. Return on the same path.

TIP: Further walks suggestions are available on the “Winter trails map” at the Tourist Offices.

16

• THE LUNAR LANDSCAPE OF THE PUEZ – ODLE NATURAL PARK From the mountain station of the Dantercëpies cable car we take the track 12A to the Jimmy hut from where we reach the Cir pass by taking the rocky forcella Cir. We always follow the “alta via delle Dolomiti” Nr. 2 until reaching the Puez hut, main destination of our tour. For the descent it can be taken, either the steeper track n°14 or the track 2,4 and then down on track nr. 16 to the Vallunga. Estimated time: 6 hours

• PIZ DULEDA From the mountain station of the Col Raiser cablecar start walking along the slightly uphill path which leads to the Rifugio Firenze Hut, following it in the direction of Sieles wind gap. Continue northwards over the arête, then continue towards the foothill part of the arête and over the ridge uphill until you reach the Nives wind gap. Footprints lead to the peak. To descend, just return along the same path. Estimated time: 5 ½ - 6 hours

Walking tour books, brochures and further hiking suggestions are available at the Tourist Offices.

BIKE & SKILL PARKS - FLOW TRAILS

Bike parks, Flow trails and Skill parks

ROAD BIKE Road bike The Dolomites’ roads have always exerted a certain pull on road bikers. When the going gets tough, these bikers push harder on their pedals to overcome the steepest bends to be rewarded by a breathtaking view and a thrilling descent upon reaching the pass. The Giro d’Italia champions have experienced this moment time and again, and now all the other ambitious, athletic bikers in Val Gardena can do the same. Our tour suggestions: • Sellaronda - The Sellaronda is one of the unmissable highlights for every racing biker! Kick off in Val Gardena and ride towards the Passo Gardena and Passo Sella. At the crossroads, take a right on the SS242 towards Passo Gardena (if you’re taking the anticlockwise tour, then take a left towards the Passo Sella). Cross the Passo Gardena to bike on towards Colfosco/Corvara. Once in Corvara, continue southwards to the Passo Campolongo and towards Arabba. In Arabba, take a right and follow the N48 towards Passo Pordoi. Here, keep to the right on the N48 and continue cycling towards the Passo Sella. After 6 km, take a turn away from the Passo Pordoi to the right on the SS 242. As soon as you cross the Passo Sella, descend towards Selva Val Gardena. Duration: 3 hours; Length: 63 km; Difficulty: medium • Discovering the Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites Start from Val Gardena and reach Passo Sella, from here descend towards Canazei (Val di Fassa) and continue in the direction of Cortina/Belluno and Passo Fedaia/ Marmolada. Once you have passed the Fedaia Pass and the artificial lake, you’ll be able to see the valley station of Marmolada cable car. Continue to Rocca Pietore. From here continue to Arabba/Laste/Digonera/Passo Pordoi. After the 9 km climb at the entrance turn left towards Arabba/Corvara. On this road, cross Arabba and go up towards Passo Campolongo. From Passo Campolongo pass through Corvara and then reach the last pass, Passo Gardena, which leads back to Val Gardena. Duration: 6 hours; Length: 84.7 km; Difficulty: high Suggestion: Find more information about excursions and bike rental on the pages 36-37.

E-BIKE E-BIKE E-bikes are the latest fashion. These battery-powered bikes eat up distances, bring you closer to your destination and create new possibilities even for the more laidback athletes. In Val Gardena, holiday-goers will find numerous bike hire spots and recharging hubs. Moreover, guided tours are also available; we recommend unexperienced bikers take part in a biking technique course with our local guides and MTB schools. It’s well worth it: so on your bikes, get ready, and enjoy! The best time to hop onto your bike, be it off-piste or on the road, is between May and the beginning of July and from September until mid-October. There is one fixed rule: always wear a helmet and drive carefully!

25

BIKE RULES

Safe fun Dear bikers and e-bikers. We’re happy you decided to take a ride in the bike destination Val Gardena/ Seiser Alm. Enjoy the Dolomites and always remember that safety and respect are the ingredients to get along with others. Let’s go! NEVER WITHOUT HELMET! Many mountain bike accidents happen in situations that are considered harmless and banal. Therefore, EVERY MOUNTAIN BIKER AND CYCLIST should ONLY RIDE WITH A HELMET! A helmet can save your life! AN E-BIKE IS NOT A MOTORCYCLE AND THE CHALLENGE IN MOUNTAIN BIKING IS THE DOWNHILL, NOT THE UPHILL Always remember: the engine of the e-bike will support you, but you will still need your leg muscles to cycle. Also, the difficulty in mountain biking/e-biking is not the uphill part, but mainly the downhill parts, where you will need some basic technical skills to drive safely. RESPECT LOCAL REGULATIONS Do not cycle off-road to avoid erosion damage. Use only roads and trails signed in the mountain bike map Val Gardena/Seiser Alm and respect local restrictions and regulations in order to avoid conflicts with landowners and other users, which are responsible for maintenance of trails. PEDESTRIANS HAVE RIGHT OF WAY Have consideration for pedestrians by announcing your presence at an early stage and slowing down. Stop if necessary. A friendly greeting promotes acceptance and is a matter of education.

26

BIKE RULES LEAVE NO TRACES A good biker knows how to brake without locking the rear wheel. You can prevent soil erosion and damage to trails by braking gently so that the wheels do not lock. Take your rubbish with you and do not make unnecessary noise. RESPECT FOR PASTURE AND WILDLIFE Respect nature. Grazing animals are not cuddly toys, so keep your distance and carefully drive past grazing animals. The scaring of pasture and wild animals is an absolute disrespect for nature. What is not important or even funny for you is reason for fear and panic for the animals. Please always close all pasture fences after driving through. ADJUST YOUR SPEED ON THE SITUATION Drive attentively and ready to brake, as unexpected obstacles can happen at any time. A DRIVING TECHNIQUE COURSE AND DRIVING WITH A GUIDE INCREASE BIKING FUN You learn proper braking and all tips and tricks for more driving fun in a driving technique course. Leave the planning of the tour which is suitable for you to a guide: he knows where to go, what you enjoy and can help out with technical problems. He also knows the most beautiful trails, the best huts and can tell you a lot about our beautiful Dolomite valley. All guides are prepared in first aid and know what to do or who to allert in case of an accident.

Mountain Huts & Lodges

Mountain Huts and Lodges Countless mountain huts and refuges offer the ideal treat, set against the perfect mountain backdrop of the Dolomites. Some of them are as Alpine and rustic as can be, while others are more robust and tasteful, while others are yet again modern and fashionable: the one thing they have in common is their pleasant meals, providing an ideal location to stop, eat, and recharge your batteries. The huts are open from the start of June to mid-October and, should the weather be good enough, the owners may decide to close a bit later. Find further information on the huts in the Tourist Office. HISTORY OF SKIING

Winter in Val Gardena The history of skiing in Val Gardena Winter sports boasts more than a century’s pedigree in Val Gardena. The milestones in the history of skiing were the founding of the first ski club, Ladina, in 1908 as well as the first ski race on the Dantercepies in that same year. An important highlight was the 1970 Alpine World Ski Championships in Val Gardena. Since then, skiing has taken off rapidly, cementing the reputation of the valley as a winter sports fortress. Val Gardena is also a perfect spot if you want to bring up medal-munching athletes, as it boasts numerous people who have made it to the top across a variety of disciplines: Carolina Kostner in ice skating; Isolde Kostner, Karl Senoner, Peter Runggaldier, Werner Perathoner and Alex Vinatzer in Alpine ski races; Vinzenz Demetz, Karin Moroder and Pepi Ploner in cross-country skiing; Simon Demetz, Michela Ponza and Alexia Runggaldier in biathlon; Silvia Bertagna in slopestyle, a freestyle discipline; Lukas Runggaldier and Samuel Costa in the Nordic combination, as well as Evelyn Insam, Elena Runggaldier, Lisa Demetz and Manuela Malsiner in ski jumping.

New and notable: the Ski Champions Walk If you were to pop behind the building of the ski and snowboard school in Selva Val Gardena, you’d find the start of a walking trails that leads to Plan following the former railway track. This walk is a one-of-a-kind experience and dedicated to the ski champions who have won the World Championships in Val Gardena since 1969 or to those skiers who won the Alpine Ski World Championships in 1970. Moreover, even the pioneers who believed in the idea of skiing in Val Gardena over the course of the years thanks to their vision, ambition and singlemindedness are featured on this walk, too. 40

SKIING TOURS

Skiing tours SELLARonda The Sellaronda is famous all over the world and includes four Dolomites passes around the Passo Sella. It leads skiers across the Ladin valleys of Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa. Overall, there are a good 40 km to enjoy in a clockwise (orange signposting) or anticlockwise (green signposting) direction. There are 26 km of pure ski bliss, while the other kilometres are easily overcome with the help of lift facilities.

Ski tour: 1970 World Championship slopes This ski tour follows the footsteps of the former ski champions and allows you to discover 4 slopes right off the bat that have shaped the history of skiing: • Downhill women: Dantercepies (Selva Val Gardena), the Cir slope • Downhill men: Ciampinoi (Selva Val Gardena – Ruacia) Saslong slope • Women and men giant slalom: Ciampinoi (Selva Val Gardena) slope no. 3 • Reserve course giant slalom: Mont Sëura (S. Cristina) Bravo slope You can start the tour from any of the three villages, and make use of 14 lift facilities: you will not ski down the same slope twice. Total elevation gain is 6,893 m.

Val gardena ronda The counterpart to the Sellaronda will reward you with its spectacular views and diversity. Hop on your skis from Ortisei, S. Cristina or Selva Val Gardena, and get ready to discover the entire valley. All you need is one day to explore Dantercepies, Ciampinoi, Plan de Gralba, Monte Pana-Mont Sëura, the Seiser Alm, Seceda and Col Raiser. 41

Respect the mountain In winter, some simple rules can help protect nature and make people and animals live peacefully together: • Do not ski off-trail through the woods: you might damage trees and disturb hibernating animals. • Pay attention to the weather and mountain rescue safety warnings. • Do not ski on avalanche-prone slopes. • Take the ski bus whenever possible. 43

SNOW & FUN PARKS

Snow & fun parks Action junkies and adrenaline seekers will feel right at home on the slopes of Val Gardena: the perfect place for fun times. Here, ‘go wild’ isn’t just a hackneyed slogan, it’s a lifestyle, an idea behind the construction of snow parks, fun parks and fun slopes, exercising their siren call especially on young athletes. What are you waiting for? Off you go! There’s something for every ski level: • Snowpark & Funpark Sassolungo (Piz Sella – Selva Val Gardena): the perfect playgrounds for beginners and families as well as for well-trained border crossers. What makes this slope special are its snow tunnel and an obstacle to overcome... an actual car on the slope; • Funslope Selva (Dantercepies/Risaccia - Selva Val Gardena): a slope for bold skiers willing to experience an exhilarant, fast adventure on the snow featuring challenging obstacles and fun surprises. Ideal for adults and teenagers; • Snowpark Monte Pana (S. Cristina): the Kids Fun Park on Monte Pana above S. Cristina is a mixture of skiparcours, funline and snowpark with race track. Several rope tows and funslopes of the Snowpark Monte Pana enjoys the whole family. Amusement for the little ones are the tunnels and a cave. • Snowpark Furdenan (Ortisei): at the Furdenan slope, young promising ski stars can look forward to plenty of action and fun. Obstacles, sudden noises, a ‘big airbag‘’ and a timed obstacle course will help them pass the time quickly while having fun.

Winter children skiing weeks

Make the most of the ‘Family Special’ offer when booking your skiing holiday as a family, and enjoy amazing special prices! From 20 March 2021, our participating infrastructures offer great special offers for children when it comes to their accommodation, ski entertainment, ski hire and ski school classes.

Ski kindergarten

That leaves their parents free to hit the slopes themselves in the knowledge that their children are being well cared for in the children’s ski courses and ski kindergarten. The service of ski kindergarten is offered by following ski schools: Ski & Snowboard School S. Cristina (from the age of 2) and Ski & Snowboard School Ortisei (from the age of 2) - see page 51.

CHILDREN

SUGGESTIONS: “Valtoi” - Kingdom of senses / Selva Val Gardena On the tracks of the eagle at the entrance of the Vallunga.

“Tieres” - Animals in the woods / Selva Val Gardena We live in an enchanting nature, this fantastic Dolomite territory is also a natural habitat of numerous wild animals such as deer, chamois, foxes, squirrels, marmots and hares. Animals that live free are very difficult to meet, so the idea of a thematic path was born. In collaboration with the Profession School of Arts in Ortisei, students have carved the life-sized animals in wood and then they were positioned along the walks and near the woods around Selva. “PanaRaida” / S. Cristina - Monte Pana At the parking place of Monte Pana you find the starting point of the adventure trail PanaRaida. The path runs across meadows and fields and is peppered with 10 adventure stations using natural products in order to create the ideal entertainment for children and parents alike. The unique backdrop sets the tone for the whole walk and guarantees a fun time surrounded by nature for all the family. Alongside the Adventure Trail, which invites you to marvel and explore, there are endless pastures where cows and horses spend their summer holidays grazing. Geocaching Route “PanaRaida” / S. Cristina - Monte Pana ... a treasure hunt for all the family! Why don’t you and your children join in this modern-day treasure hunt? Along the PanaRaida adventure trail, there are a total of three adventure stations where ”Geocaches“ (containers) have been hidden. Each of these contains a word which must be memorised. Once you have found all three words, go to the S. Cristina Tourist Office, tell them the words and you will receive your surprise (or ”treasure“). This is how it works: Enter the coordinates - you will find them on www.valgardena.it/panaraida or at the S. Cristina Tourist Office, where you will also find the free PanaRaida map. The cache you will find contains the first of the three words, and also the coordinates of the next hideout! Good luck! 59

ARTS & CRAFT

Val Gardena and its craftsmanship When the work is a reflection of the master’s skill, you know there must be plenty of outstanding masters in this Dolomite valley. After all, there are many beautiful works of art scattered around Val Gardena that stand out and attract the guests’ attention in the village centres, the numerous squares and well as shops, exhibition halls and workshops. It’s no coincidence that Val Gardena is called ‘the valley of woodcarvers’. This special craftsmanship came

about at the start of the 17th century, developed in the local farm Stube after a long day’s work. Families would carve wooden toys, representations of saints and scenes from their everyday farm life. The resulting works obtained fame and world renown, and so woodcarving, sculpting, and painting became an important business. Val Gardena’s craftsmanship has changed considerably over the course of the last years, yet its distinctive skill still lives on. You can get an idea about their work during the following exhibitions and presentations: • UNIKA art fair (2 – 5/9/2021)

ART 52 permanent art exhibition During the permanent exhibition in the Cultural House in Ortisei, 52 sculptors, painters and dealers will exhibit their works on a surface of 330 m² boasting a number of different styles. Open between 9 am and 10 pm every day for free. 98

• IDEA UNIKA (the entire summer) • Gardena Art Nativity Scene exhibition (in the run-up to Christmas) • Val Gardena Christmas markets • Snow and ice sculpture competitions

MUSEUM GHERDËINA The remains of the large ichthyosaur from Secëda (241 million years ago) are displayed in the paleontological section of the Museum.

Museum Gherdëina

60 years Museum of Val Gardena 1960 - 2020 Geology and woodcarving, craftsmanship and Luis Trenker: you can find an overview of everything that characterises and makes Val Gardena stand out in the Museum Gherdëina at the centre of Ortisei village. The walk back in time at the museum starts more than 200 million years ago with spectacular local finds such as fossils, including the remains of the oldest fish dinosaur in the world, and continues with archaeological discoveries right on the Val Gardena crafts from the 17th century. Visitors can admire sacred and profane sculptures, world-famous Val Gardena wooden toys, but also a beautiful fasting cloth, a monumental mountain summit cross, and a multimedia presentation of late medieval drawings in red chalk. Val Gardena’s cult figure cannot be skipped: mountain climber, movie and TV star Luis Trenker, whose furniture, film memorabilia, posters, books, and awards can be seen at the museum. And there’s also a section dedicated to the farming world. THE SIGHTS

The sights Churches and chapels San Giacomo’s Church San Giacomo’s Church is located on the ancient ‘Troi Paian’ path and, according to oral tradition, is the oldest church in the valley and dedicated to Saint James, protector of hikers and pilgrims. From Ortisei you can reach the church on foot following a gradually steep ascent in about one hour. As an alternative, you can take the bus or the car to San Giacomo. After a 15-minute uphill walk, you’ll reach San Giacomo’s Church. Even from Plesdinaz, above S. Cristina, a footpath leads to a picturesque church whose origins go as far back as the 12th century. The outside facade of San Giacomo’s Church is influenced by the Gothic movement, while the interior by the Baroque. The many works of art that are housed here are good reproductions by local wood carvers. The originals can be found in Val Gardena’s Museum Gherdëina. Opening hours and guided visits between the start of July to mid-September. For further information visit the Tourist Office in Ortisei. “Santa Maria ad Nives” Selva Val Gardena Parish Church The 19th century Neo-Gothic nave was dismantled in 1988 and replaced by an 8-sided building. The chancel and the main altar painting by Lucas Cranach date back to 1670. In 1503 Wilhelm von Wolkenstein had a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary built on this spot. It became a major pilgrimage destination, and was subsequently enlarged. The outer wall of the sacristy still bears a Von Wolkenstein coat of arms made of granite. 110

Memorial Chapel to Mountain Victims The chapel was built in the Selva Val Gardena’s graveyard to commemorate all mountaineers who die in the Dolomites in Val Gardena. Their names are engraved in a large copper book. Gardena Pass Chapel The chapel was built by the local “Alpini” groups and it is dedicated to their patron saint, St. Maurice. It was inaugurated in Spring 2004.

S. Cristina Parish Church A chapel dedicated to S. Cristina existed here probably at the end of the 12th century. A Romanesque church was mentioned in a papal document in 1342. The bell tower walls, up to the roof eaves, date back to that period. The church was extensively altered and enlarged: the choir is in the Gothic style, and a polygonal ossuary was added in the 16th century. The main altar (1690, Vinazer dynasty of sculptors) is worth a visit. The bronze statue of St. Philomena by Dominik Mahlknecht, once in the ossuary, is now in the main square of S. Cristina.

Ortisei Parish Church Two aisles were added to the late Baroque building at the beginning of the 20th century. This remarkable church is decorated with several paintings, carvings, statues and images (among which a statue of St. Ulrich by Ludwig Moroder and the altar painting depicting the “Adoration of the Magi” by Josef Moroder-Lusenberg). 111

THE SIGHTS

St. Sylvester’s Chapel in Vallunga Selva Val Gardena This tiny, charming place of silence and meditation was dedicated to the patron saint of cattle. 300 year-old frescoes illustrating the history of Jesus’ life were uncovered during restoration work in 1993.

THE SIGHTS

St. Anna’s Chapel A small church built at the beginning of the 15th century in the Ortisei’s graveyard. It features a noteworthy portal and several ancient gravestones and memorials.

St. Anthony’s Chapel Photographers love the turrets of this plain building erected in 1673 on the main square in Ortisei. It features an altar painting depicting St. Anthony from Padua, by the Swiss painter Melchior Paul von Deschwanden.

Roncadizza Parish Church Josef Runggaldier commissioned this parish in 1900 to honour St. Joseph as a sign of his gratitude after having survived an accident whilst working in the woods. A painting inside the church depicts the episode. The extension project was stopped in 1979. However, a new church was started in 1981 and consecrated in 1984. Bulla Parish Church The beautiful Romanesque church, dedicated to St. Leonard, was built around the 13th century. Its main altar dates back to the 18th century.

The Holy Cross Chapel, built in 1755 in Resciesa di Fuori (over 2200 m) is also worth a visit. The chapel was restored in summer 2012.

112

Fischburg Castle - Castel Gardena The castle was built between 1622 and 1641 by Engelhard Dietrich von Wolkenstein-Trostburg. It is located between Selva and S. Cristina and was used as a summer and hunting lodge. In 1863, Count Leopold von WolkensteinTrostburg granted the castle to S. Cristina municipality to transform it into an almshouse. The castle has been owned by the Franchetti Barons since 1926, and it is currently closed to the public. Wolkenstein Castle A steep path starts near the “Carabinieri training centre in Vallunga (Selva) and heads up to the castle ruins. Built at the beginning of the 13th century, it collapsed in 1525 and has never been rebuilt. It has been owned by the Wolkenstein family since the 14th century. Oswald von Wolkenstein, a famous minstrel and poet born in South Tyrol between 1376 and 1387, died in Merano in 1445, probably spent his summers in the castle.

MEMORIALS Purger Memorial The monument is near the church square in Ortisei. It was built in memory of Johann Baptist Purger (1805 - 1872), the mayor who fought for the construction of the Val Gardena Road from Ponte Gardena to Ortisei.

Paul Grohmann Memorial On the trail to San Giacomo there is a monument in memory of the Austrian mountaineer Paul Grohmann (1838-1908), who managed several first ascents in the Dolomites, including the Sassolungo (in 1869), the Marmolada (in 1864), the Cima Grande (in 1869) and the Tofana di Rozes (in 1864). In 1875, the peak Punta Grohmann in the Sassolungo Group was named after him. In 2019, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Sassolungo. 113

THE SIGHTS

Luis Trenker Memorial The monument is located along the path named after him. It is dedicated to “Bera Luis”, the famous local actor, director, writer and passionate mountaineer who successfully conveyed his love for the mountains to his vast audience.

Emilio Comici Memorial The bronze monument in memory of the famous mountaineer is found under the “Parëi de Ciampac” rock wall, in Vallunga, where Comici fell to his death in 1940. He made over 200 first ascents in the Dolomites, he was the director of the ski school in Selva and town mayor between 1938 and 1940. The freerider The eponymous bronze statue was built on the “Raida dl luech” walk in S. Cristina. The project is the result of a competition backed by the partnership between S. Cristina, the Tourist Association and the S. Cristina Art Sculpture Association to embellish the “Raida dl luech” and to to emphasize the importance and value of artistic activity in Val Gardena. The bronze statue freerider was built in 2012 near the Cisles Street in S. Cristina. MORE SIGHTS A musical clock is set into the façade of the “Sartëur” house in Selva Val Gardena. Every day at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. (5 p.m. in winter), fourteen valuable bells play different tunes. Four wood-carved medieval statues appear as the music starts. The paintings on the wall depict the craftsmen who used to work in the area, which was once called “Ghetun”.

The old mills in Bulla, right above Ortisei, were built in the 18th and 19th century. The Zaramin mill is abandoned, but the Rumanon mill was restored in 1999 and the Droch mill in 2010. They are now fully operational. Visitors can join a guided tour and learn more about the mills and the ancient local lifestyle. More information for guided tours is available at the Tourist Office in Ortisei. 114

”La ferata de Gherdëina” Val Gardena’s train and railway tunnel S. Cristina Val Gardena’s train – also known as ‘la ferata’ in Ladin – was built between 1915 and 1916 in just four and a half months for military purposes by hundreds of thousands of Russian prisoners of wars, soldiers, and civilian workers. 1960 signalled the end of the Val Gardena train, due to the rise of cars on the road. Today, a promenade follows the former rail track from Ortisei (where you can find the original Austrian locomotive) via S. Cristina and Selva Val Gardena, peppered with information boards and pictures from local archives. From 1917 until 1960, the Val Gardena Railway drove through this Railway tunnel near the parish church of S. Cristina Val Gardena. In 2017, after works of restauration, the tunnel has been made accessible to history enthusiasts and people who walk along the Val Gardena Railway Trail. The tunnel will be a new and better connection between the Valgardena Railway trail and Triech. Guided tours and cultural events will take place. Opening times: daily from 7.00 a.m. to 11 p.m. The world’s largest hand-carved nativity scene in the world In the Iman sports centre in S. Cristina you’ll find the largest hand-carved nativity scene in the world. It was in 1988 and since then, artists have expanded it year after year. It can be visited for free around the clock. The new sundial created by the artist Roland Moroder is located on the Alpe Juac on a huge meadow and counts as usual all the serene hours. From Selva Val Gardena one reaches the sundial about the cozy walk no. 3 from the “Daunëi” fraction. Walking time: 30 min.
