S. CRISTINA S. Cristina (1428 m) is a little gem – not only for its location: the village is in fact located in the heart of the valley, on the sunny side. Gateway to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage, in summer it’s the ideal starting point for excursions along the extensive network of trails in the nature park Puez-Odle and at the foot of the Sassolungo and the Sassopiatto. The Gherdëina Ronda, the Sellaronda and the Dolomiti Superski circuit are only a stone’s throw away, as well as the cross-country ski centre Monte Pana. Winter offers an abundance of activities and sports. Those wishing to get an up-close look at the Val Gardena lifestyle, are invited to stroll along the pedestrian area in the centre of S. Cristina with its typical restaurants, pubs and variety of popular shops and businesses. A vibrant programme of events also offers an insight in the colourful culture. Inhabitants

Ortisei (Urtijëi) L eisure and activities - Ortisei (1236 m), the biggest town of the valley, blends the majestic silence of the mountains with the bustling gaiety of a hub of culture and events. Famous local personalities like Luis Trenker and Giorgio Moroder have their roots here, hence the town looks back on a long cultural tradition. However, opportunities for sport and nature lovers are numberless. Ortisei and the three hamlets Bulla, San Giacomo and Roncadizza, with a direct lift connection to the ski and hiking areas in Seceda, Alpe di Siusi, Resciesa and to the ski circuit “Sellaronda” are the right place for a recreational break in the Dolomites.

GEOGRAPHY al Gardena is a side valley of Valle Isarco, in the northwestern DoloV mites of South Tyrol. It stretches for about 25 km from Ponte Gardena (471 m) up to the Sella and Gardena Passes. Some 10 km after entering the valley you enter the Ladin-speaking area, which includes Ortisei (Ladin: UrtijĂŤi), S. Cristina and Selva Val Gardena (SĂŤlva). The narrow area of Pontives forms the Ladin-German language border. The Plans de Frea form the eastern border, and westwards the Pinei Pass divides Val Gardena from Castelrotto and Laion. To the North, the valley reaches Alpe Resciesa and Funes, while Alpe di Siusi marks its southern border. From a geographical and linguistic point of view, the hamlets in the northern side of Alpe di Siusi belong to Val Gardena. However, some of them have always been part of the municipality of Castelrotto. Bulla is a separate parish.

NATURE RESERVE PUEZ-ODLE w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
Nature Reserve Puez-Odle T he park is located at an average on 2500 m, and has a surface area of 10200 ha. Its rocky upland features a number of geological peculiarities: natural bridges and amphitheatre-shaped karst landforms, steep ridges and rocky towers bear witness to the geological and morphological changes that this mountain massif has undergone over time. The local fl ora and fauna are as diverse as the landscape. Many deciduous trees grow in the valley, like sycamore maples, birches and aspens, whereas the high mountain slopes are covered with needle-leaved trees, mainly spruces and larches. Above the timber line, mugo pines and junipers mark the end of the conifer forest. Rhododendrons and small high mountain fl owers blanket the areas up towards the scree slopes. The edelweiss, the pink cinquefoil, the yellow alpine poppy and the devil’s claw grow here, together with several varieties of primroses and stone-breakers. The less fertilized downhill slopes are dotted with asteraceae, bellfl owers, gentians, orchids and faboideae. Numerous animal species live in the park so you are quite likely to spot hares, squirrels, chamois and marmots, or follow the trail of pine martens, badgers or alpine ibexes during your walks. Butterfl ies fl itter over meadows and birds fi ll the air with their song.

NATURE RESERVE PUEZ-ODLE
The park’s top priorities - besides research and recovery - are nature protection, landscape conservation and environmental education.
Further information about the Natural Park, natural and botanical guided tours and wildlife watching are available at the Tourist Offices in Val Gardena and at the local Alpine Schools.

w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
The rocky area is often populated with several singing and gallinaceous birds, like the little owl, the longeared owl, the craig martin, the alpine swift and the red-winged wallcreeper, whereas the rare golden eagle can be spotted in Vallunga.
DOLOMITES - UNESCO w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
Dolomites - UNESCO World Heritage Site The UNESCO World Heritage Site lists over 1000 natural and cultural locations, traditions and objects from all over the world. Who or rather, what, is UNESCO? The acronym stands for United Nations Educational, ScientiďŹ c and Cultural Organization. This institution was founded in 1945 and is based in Paris. The World Heritage Committee manages and oversees this list. Every year, it decides whether to include new sites onto the list by following precise criteria. The Dolomites had to wait for a considerable amount of time before being accepted on the World Heritage Site list in june 2009. There are 9 mountain ranges in the Dolomites, located in different Italian regions, which can take pride in being a Heritage site. Various South Tyrolean Nature Parks, such as the Puez-Odle, are within this area, also encompassing the three villages of Val Gardena. Being on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list is a prestigious recognition, an honour and, why not, akin to receiving a Nobel when it comes to natural locations. In fact, it places the location under an international spotlight and turns it into an even more popular tourist destination. That is why sustainable, responsible and green tourism is a must in these locations. Because the award is an honour and a duty at the same time. When a site is included on this list, the country has to work to preserve and protect the uniqueness and integrity of this special place for future generations. That is why mobility should also be green. For this precise reason, we have introduced a service for guests staying at accommodation establishments belonging to a Val Gardena Tourist Association. These guests can now travel for free on all buses with the Val Gardena Mobil Card. Thanks to an extensive network of routes, buses are the best way to travel around Val Gardena and reaching every location, including uphill lift facilities. The Gardena Card is also another option: use the facilities for three or six consecutive days unlimited during summer and autumn in Val Gardena. The aim is to raise unlimited awareness on the importance of the World 10
DOLOMITES - UNESCO The contrast between the pale mountains and the lush green fi elds and forests rolling out at their feet is a fascinating spectacle, just as their pink-tinged peaks at sundown. Numerous written accounts testify to the extraordinary beauty of these mountains. The Dolomites move everyone: their beauty wins over locals and tourists, artists and scientists. Nobel or not, these are considered by some to be the most beautiful mountains in the world. These mountains are also extremely important from a geological point of view. Their walls are like the pages of a diary, documenting the main phases of the earth’s history. The different types of rock and sedimentary strata, the results of erosion, diastrophism and glaciation make it an open book for us to read. The Dolomites: a unique and unrivalled natural landscape. Past, present and future.
You can now find the new book on the topic of “Fascination Dolomites UNESCO” in the Tourist Associations and your accommodation. 11

Heritage Site. The middle school in Selva Val Gardena took part in the artistic project‚ “The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site”, during the 2014/15 school year. It is precisely the extraordinary natural beauty of this imposing mountain region that secured its place on the UNESCO list, together with its geological and geomorphological signifi cance. The majestic vertical inclines of the Pale Mountains, as they are often called, are an exceptional collection of shapes and sizes, unique in the whole world. A motley collection of peaks, columns, towers, scrags, plateaus, scraggy walls and fi elds and forests.
LANDSCAPE FARMERS w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
Landscape farmers Val Gardena is an extraordinary holiday destination. Its mesmerising nature and breathtaking Alpine landscape are renowned the world over. Feast your eyes on lush green slopes, fi elds, forests and meadows. Yet are we even aware of this natural paradise’s true value? The South Tyrolean and Val Gardena anthropized landscapes (a landscape shaped by human intervention) underwent some substantial changes in the second half of the 20th century. These changes were quite remarkable even before WWI, namely in the development of woodcarving and the tourism boom. The 50s were a watershed moment for the valley and completely changed the anthropized landscape: the tourism boom was in fact pivotal for the valley’s development. The future will further shape the valley, hence the need to safeguard and protect this valuable natural landscape. Some ranges from the Dolomites have had the privilege of being listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list, which is one of the main steps taken to enhance its profi le and safeguard the Dolomitic landscape. One of the areas is the Puez-Odle Nature Park, which falls under the protection of Natura 2000, a network of nature protection areas. This is a European project designed to protect natural habitats and their fl ora and fauna. Its aim is to protect the most original and anthropized part of Val Gardena so that it can be preserved and accessed by as many people as possible in the future. The protected space serves as an environmental educational tool as well as being a great opportunity to see nature up close. Val Gardena is heaven on earth when it comes to enjoying your free time, both for locals and tourists. The summer pastures are the panoramic outlook posts of South Tyrol. Both farmers and landowners, who are not, granted, farmers in the strict sense of the word, but certainly do value their land, have been tending to their pastures as a vital part of the anthropized landscape. Even the hay, on the steepest of mountain pastures, is hand-cut and gathered. It is quite often a taxing task but the results are clear: the fi elds are well kept and clean. Summer pastures are a beautiful location, ideal to chill out and relax, and during the summer 12
LANDSCAPE FARMERS Take in the wondrous environment you gaze on whilst strolling in the green woods. They are home to a rich number of plants and animals, are a source of renewable energy and signifi cantly contribute to protecting the environment. Forests are a natural and renewable building material and are vital regulators of water levels. Furthermore, they also protect us from land- and mudslides and from falling rocks. Mountain farmers take care of them with loving affection and respect, ensuring they continue to protect us in the future. Val Gardena is a crisscross network of paths, mountain bike trails, ski and cross country ski slopes often stretching over a farmer’s land. Which is why it is important to ensure that sports enthusiasts and nature lovers respect these trails as a matter of the utmost importance. Keep to the signposted paths and trails; do not litter; drive carefully and do not speed. Respect the rules - preserve this unique landscape. For nature’s sake, for that of our future and that of our children.

months even the herds of cattle seem to appreciate them. Mountain hay is rich in fl owers and herbs, which gives its distinctive fl avour to mountain milk. It is also used in wellbeing and beauty treatments and as ingredients for local recipes.
KEEP THE VALLEY CLEAN w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
Keep the valley clean e are all responsible for protecting the environment. We can choose to W help safeguard it, or damage it. It is therefore in everyone’s interest to minimize waste and to correctly dispose of it. A few simple rules help us protect the environment and its resources: - Always keep to the marked trails and paths; this helps prevent damage to the meadows and alpine pastures. - Do not pick protected fl ower species. - Respect the habitat of animals, do not make any unnecessary noise. - Do not light fi res! -
Do not litter! Please take your rubbish with you and dispose of it according to local regulations. When you buy something, choose loose products or items sold in reusable packaging. Your shopkeeper will be happy to recycle packaging for you.
- Avoid disposable items and buy drinks in returnable bottles. - For dog owners: please dispose promptly of your dog’s waste properly. If you have any hazardous waste, like drugs, batteries or aerosols, hand them in to your host or to shops that sell those products. Attention: Please note that in Val Gardena each household or business is provided with its own waste container. Street-side bins are for recycling only (glass, paper, carton, organic waste, metal cans and jars, plastic). Ask your host for any further information.

HISTORY OF SKIING T he world-famous skiing and hiking region offers an area packed with recreational opportunities for active, sporty and trend-conscious guests all year round. Val Gardena looks back on a long winter sports tradition: the fi rst skiclub of Val Gardena, named “Ladinia”, was established at the beginning of the 20th century, only a few years after the fi rst wooden skis were introduced to the Alpine valleys from the northern countries. The initial scepticism quickly turned into great enthusiasm: in 1908 the fi rst ski races were held through the Danterceppies wood, down to Selva Val Gardena. In the following years, many ski fans were attracted by the ideal conditions of Val Gardena. The valley has produced several outstanding local skiers, and many winter sports successes have been recorded over the years: • Vinzenz Demetz, 1937, Nordic World Ski Championship in Chamonix, two bronzes in cross-country skiing (50 km and relay) • Karl Senoner, 1966, slalom World Champion in Portillo, Chile • Pepi Ploner, 1985, cross-country relay Vice World Champion • Simon Demetz, 1991, biathlon World Champion • Peter Runggaldier, 1991, downhill Vice World Champion; 1995, super-G World Cup winner • Karin Moroder, 1998, bronze in cross-country relay at the Olympics • Isolde Kostner, 2001, downhill World Cup winner, several medals at the Olympics and in the World Championships • Elena Runggaldier, 2011, ski jumping Vice World Champion • Michela Ponza, 2013, biathlon World Championship, bronze in biathlon relay. A remarkable year in the history of local ski was 1970, when the Alpine Skiing World Championships were held in Val Gardena. Ski legends Karl Schranz, Patrick Russel, Jean Noël, Bernhard Russi and Gustav Thöni all made their mark on that particular occasion. A tradition was thus established, and it is so far unbroken: every year, in December, the best Super-G World Cup and men’s downhill skiers gather from all over the world to compete on the renowned Saslong piste. 15

Its use is on a constant rise not only due to its suitability benefi ts, and there are numerous places which hire them out. There are two summer appointments not to miss out on: the HERO Südtirol Dolomites (17/06/2017), an 86 km long race with a total elevation gain of 4500 m and the Bike Day (11/06/2017) where the streets will be open to cyclists and traffi c-free. Freeride fans, attention! A downhill slope has been opened. The Freeride Ciampinoi in Selva Val Gardena is 3,130 m long, with an elevation gain of 568 m and snakes across a fun and entertaining route. Take the cable car for the uphill parts. There is one fi xed rule: always wear a helmet and drive carefully. One word of advice: free “33 touring maps – Bike paradise Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi” with many itineraries to facilitate your excursions, Tabacco (1:25.000) 26

HISTORY w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
History T he early history of the Dolomite region is still widely unknown. The fi rst human settlements date back to 6000 B.C. Findings from “Plan de Frea” confi rm that hunters used to live there in the summer, and the excavations carried out in “Col de Flam” testify to a permanent settlement dating back to 400 B.C. Later Rhaetians - whose origins remain unknown - settled in the tributary alpine valleys. In 15 B.C. the area was conquered by the Roman commander Drusus. The name Val Gardena is mentioned for the fi rst time in 999 A.D., in a document mentioning “Forestum ad Gredine” (Val Gardena woodland) being handed over to Bishop Gottschalk from the Freising Abbey. Communication had always been diffi cult, but in 1856 the Val Gardena road was opened and a new era began for the whole area. The Val Gardena Railway Committee, chaired by Josef Riffesser, put forward a plan to build a railway line at the beginning of the 20th century, but this did not occur until 1915 when it was needed to deliver supplies to the Austrian troops on the Dolomite front. It took just 4 ½ months to build a 31 km narrow gauge railway line which was inaugurated on 6 February 1916. After the end of the war, the steam trains continued to be crucial for moving people and goods and, in fact, more and more tourists were attracted to the area by this means of transport until the rail line was decommissioned in 1960. Today, the former railway line path, “la ferata”, from Ortisei to Selva Val Gardena via S. Cristina is a reminder of that eventful era and affords stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

LANGUAGE - AWARDS FOR GUESTS T he very heart of the Ladin culture is its language. Ladin belongs to the Romance language family and has been infl uenced both by Rhaetic and German. Ladin was probably already spoken in Val Gardena during the fi rst century A.D. The local variety is similar to Romansh, the language spoken in Grisons, the Swiss canton. Connections with other varieties spoken in the neighbouring valleys (Val Badia, Val di Fassa, Livinallongo and Ampezzo) are also evident. Ladin was infl uenced by both Latin and German, assimilating the pleasant sounds of the fi rst and integrating many words from the second. Nonetheless, it survived in the tributary valleys, and today Ladin is the fi rst language of most Val Gardena inhabitants. Survival of the Ladin language is supported by local radio and TV broadcasts, publications and various cultural activities, and it is also taught as a compulsory subject in schools. ome Ladin expressions: S Bon di = Good morning Co es’a inuem? = What’s your name? Assudëi = Goodbye
Bona sëira = Good evening De gra = Thank you Co vala pa? = How are you?
Awards for our regular guests You always return to a place you like. Holiday goers in Val Gardena always come back. The Dolomite Valley, after all, is too unique to be visited only once. Even our exceptional hospitality contributes to guests feeling at home, and has created lasting friendships over the years. Of course, this trust in our valley and hotels has to be rewarded because Val Gardena is incredibly proud of its regular guests. All people who have stayed in the same accommodation for at least ten years shall receive a certifi cate and a small present. We kindly ask you to contact your accommodation. Come and visit us in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Dolomites – we know you’ll want to come back. 89

ARTS & CRAFT w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
Arts and craft T he wood-carving tradition in Val Gardena started around 1600, when families would gather together during the long winter evenings and carve tools, religious images and toys to sell at the forthcoming spring markets. By the late 18th century, wood-carving had become a signiďŹ cant economic sector. SpeciďŹ c vocational schools were set up and a new modern industry was created. The work of the local sculptors even began to be acknowledged abroad. Their art continued to develop and new carving methods were adopted which led to the creation of an innovative and original craftsmanship with unrivalled quality and tradition. ARTS & CRAFT Since 2000, the world’s largest nativity scene has been displayed in the Iman Sports Centre in S. Cristina. The project is being carried out by a group of 18 sculptors. It was initiated in 1998 with the fi rst statue being that of the Holy Mary with Baby Jesus. Creativity, sensibility, sense of art and skill fostered the idea: St. Joseph, the Magi, a shepherd, a donkey, three sheep, an Angel and a camel are now part of the scene, and the family continues to grow year after year.
We recommend you to visit the nativity scene exhibitions: • Krippenland - Bernardi Hermann Ortisei, Str. Arnaria 27, Tel. 0471 797593 Wonder at the depictions of Mary and Joseph looking for somewhere to stay, of Baby Jesus’s birth in the cave, the fl ight from Egypt and… a mountainous landscape. The nativity scene measures 10 m2 in length and sets the scene of peaceful and calm lights and sounds. Children love nativity scenes rich in detail. A unique experience. Large parking space. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8 - 12 a.m. and 2 - 6 p.m., Sat 10 – 12 a.m.

TRADITIONS AND THEIR COSTUMES w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
Traditions and their costumes veryday life in Val Gardena is imbued with ancient traditions. Customs E and celebrations take place all year round: as their original meaning often risks oblivion, retrieving and keeping them alive is crucial. Together with the Ladin language and craftsmanship, the local folk costume is at the very heart of Val Gardena culture. Its lavish decorations make it one of the most beautiful costumes in the Alps; the costume is particularly important as it identifi es the social status of the person wearing it. The most beautiful costumes are worn during weddings. On such occasions, not only do they indicate the wearer’s social status, but also his/ her specifi c role. In the Ladin language, the grandparents of a wedded couple are called nëinesc: grandmother (ava) and grandfather (nëine). Grandparents were distinguished in their dress sense by wearing white woollen berets called cazina; apart from this, their clothing resembled that of others of their age. Grandmothers usually wear a petticoat by the name of carsetl dala pinta, with very large sleeves buttoned low on the wrist: padded and loose to the elbow and then tight above the elbow; a Damascus silk apron (gurmel fosch da ondes) covers the black skirt with numerous folds (sciossa). Grandfathers wear a shirt (ciamëija), a silk handkerchief worn around their neck (fazuel de sëida) and a gilet (camesëul de sëida): just like any other man of the area, they wear leather trousers (brea de pel). The long mantel which he carries with him is called bagana: you can also see the silk handkerchief around his neck at the back, thanks to a cut in the cloth of the mantel. The “ciauzei dal lac” are typical male shoes with laces. More information about Val Gardena customs and traditions can be found in a book entitled “Usanzes de Gherdëina”, available at the Tourist Offi ce in S. Cristina. 96

Geology and woodcarving, craftsmanship and Luis Trenker: you can fi nd an overview of everything that characterises and makes Val Gardena stand out in the Museum Gherdëina at the centre of Ortisei village. The walk back in time at the museum starts more than 200 million years ago with spectacular local fi nds such as fossils, including the remains of the oldest fi sh dinosaur in the world, and continues with archaeological discoveries right on the Val Gardena crafts from the 17th century. Visitors can admire sacred and profane sculptures, world-famous Val Gardena wooden toys, but also a beautiful fasting cloth, a monumental mountain summit cross, and a multimedia presentation of late medieval drawings in red chalk. Val Gardena’s cult fi gure cannot be skipped: mountain climber, movie and TV star Luis Trenker, whose furniture, fi lm memorabilia, posters, books, and awards can be seen at the museum. And there’s also a section dedicated to the farming world. Guided tours in English and Russian on request. Tel. 0471 797554 Special offers and events on the web: www.museumgherdeina.it

THE SIGHTS w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
The sights CHURCHES AND CHApELS San Giacomo Church The San Giacomo Church is located on the ancient path Troi Paian. According to tradition, it is the oldest church in the valley. It is dedicated to St. James (San Giacomo), the patron saint of travellers and pilgrims. From Ortisei you can reach the idyllic, sunny hamlet comfortably by ski or summer bus or by car. Here you are surrounded by nature and you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view. After a 15-minute walk (slightly uphill) you will arrive to the San Giacomo Church. Alternatively, you can start from Ortisei and take a slightly sloping trail (Path of Dialogue), which takes you to the San Giacomo Church in about an hour. Another beautiful circular walk connects S. Cristina (Plesdinaz) with the church. The current overall appearance is Gothic, and the inside is part Gothic and part Baroque. The church features remarkable frescoes (late 15th century) in the presbytery. Wall paintings from the 16th century, illustrating the legend of San Giacomo (St. James), decorate the area near the pulpit. The local wood-carving tradition is represented in the main altar. Around 1750 the Vinazer-Pescosta brothers decorated it with spiral columns, gilded images of ancient church leaders, apostles and angels. The current sculptures and artwork on the main altar are replicas made by local carvers. The originals are on display at the Val Gardena Museum in Ortisei. Opening times: 03.07.-22.09.2017 Mon., Tue. and Thu. 10.30 a.m. - noon, Wed. and Fri. 10.30 a.m. - noon and 3.30 - 5 p.m.. More information at the Tourist Office Ortisei.

THE SIGHTS
St. Sylvester’s Chapel in Vallunga - Selva Val Gardena This tiny, charming place of silence and meditation was dedicated to the patron saint of cattle. 300 year-old frescoes illustrating the history of Jesus’ life were uncovered during restoration work in 1993.
Memorial Chapel to Mountain Victims The chapel was built in the Selva Val Gardena’s graveyard to commemorate all mountaineers who die in the Dolomites in Val Gardena. Their names are engraved in a large copper book.
Gardena pass Chapel The chapel was built by the local “Alpini” groups and it is dedicated to their patron saint, St. Maurice. It was inaugurated in Spring 2004.
S. Cristina parish Church A chapel dedicated to Santa Cristina existed here probably at the end of the 12th century. A Romanesque church was mentioned in a papal document in 1342. The bell tower walls, up to the roof eaves, date back to that period. The church was extensively altered and enlarged: the choir is in the Gothic style, and a polygonal ossuary was added in the 16th century. The main altar (1690, Vinazer dynasty of sculptors) is worth a visit. The bronze statue of St. Philomena by Dominik Mahlknecht, once in the ossuary, is now in the main square of S. Cristina. 105

“Santa Maria ad Nives” - Selva Val Gardena parish Church The 19th century Neo-Gothic nave was dismantled in 1988 and replaced by an 8-sided building. The chancel and the main altar painting by Lucas Cranach date back to 1670. In 1503 Wilhelm von Wolkenstein had a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary built on this spot. It became a major pilgrimage destination, and was subsequently enlarged. The outer wall of the sacristy still bears a Von Wolkenstein coat of arms made of granite.
THE SIGHTS w w w. v a l g a r d e n a . i t
Ortisei parish Church Two aisles were added to the late Baroque building at the beginning of the 20th century. This remarkable church is decorated with several paintings, carvings, statues and images (among which a statue of St. Ulrich by Ludwig Moroder and the altar painting depicting the “Adoration of the Magi” by Josef Moroder-Lusenberg).
St. Anna’s Chapel A small church built at the beginning of the 15th century in the Ortisei’s graveyard. It features a noteworthy portal and several ancient gravestones and memorials.
St. Anthony’s Chapel Photographers love the turrets of this plain building erected in 1673 on the main square in Ortisei. It features an altar painting depicting St. Anthony from Padua, by the Swiss painter Melchior Paul von Deschwanden.
Roncadizza parish Church Josef Runggaldier commissioned this parish in 1900 to honour St. Joseph as a sign of his gratitude after having survived an accident whilst working in the woods. A painting inside the church depicts the episode. The extension project was stopped in 1979. However, a new church was started in 1981 and consecrated in 1984. Bulla parish Church The beautiful Romanesque church, dedicated to St. Leonard, was built around the 13th century. Its main altar dates back to the 18th century.
The Holy Cross Chapel, built in 1755 in Resciesa di Fuori (over 2200 m) is also worth a visit. The chapel was restored in summer 2012. 106
Wolkenstein Castle A steep path starts near the “Carabinieri” training centre in Vallunga (Selva) and heads up to the castle ruins. Built at the beginning of the 13th century, it collapsed in 1525 and has never been rebuilt. It has been owned by the Wolkenstein family since the 14th century. Oswald von Wolkenstein, a famous minstrel and poet born in South Tyrol between 1376 and 1387, died in Merano in 1445, probably spent his summers in the castle. Stetteneck Castle In the summer of 2000, in Val d’Anna in Ortisei on the so-called Pincan hill at the foot of the Balest mountain, remains of a wall from the 13th century were discovered. The researches revealed that it must be the ruins of the Stetteneck Castle, which was nominated only once in a document of 1324. Thus, only little information about it exists. Adelheid, daughter of Knight Gebhard von Stetteneck, was probably the last owner of the castle. The excavations are still in progress. Among the present fi nds are also the remains of a Romanesque portal. Stetteneck Castle, situated at the ancient trade route Troi Paian, is believed to be the castle of a renowned robber baron mentioned in a local legend by Karl Felix Wolff. The lord of the castle extorted heavy tolls from passing merchants or held them for ransom in the dungeon. At the time, legend had it that a virgin had been walled up in the castle foundations: if another virgin were to die in the castle, the whole building would collapse. One day the Lord’s granddaughter was seriously injured while attempting to set some prisoners free. All the servants and prisoners fl ed from the castle for fear of it collapsing, but the Lord remained at the side of his dying grandchild while the building fell down around them. The ruin cannot be visited at the moment. 107
THE SIGHTS
Fischburg Castle - Castel Gardena The castle was built between 1622 and 1641 by Engelhard Dietrich von Wolkenstein-Trostburg. It is located between Selva and S. Cristina and was used as a summer and hunting lodge. In 1863, Count Leopold von Wolkenstein-Trostburg granted the castle to S. Cristina municipality to transform it into an almshouse. The castle has been owned by the Franchetti Barons since 1926, and it is currently closed to the public.

paul Grohmann Monument On the trail to San Giacomo there is a monument in memory of the Austrian mountaineer Paul Grohmann (1838-1908), who managed several fi rst ascents in the Dolomites, including the Sassolungo (in 1869), the Marmolada (in 1864), the Cima Grande (in 1869) and the Tofana di Rozes (in 1864). In 1875, the peak Punta Grohmann in the Sassolungo Group was named after him.

He made over 200 fi rst ascents in the Dolomites, he was the director of the ski school in Selva and town mayor between 1938 and 1940.
The freerider and the climber The eponymous bronze statues were built on the “Raida dl luech” walk in S. Cristina. The project is the result of a competition backed by the partnership between S. Cristina, the Tourist Association and the S. Cristina Art Sculpture Association to embellish the “Raida dl luech” and to to emphasize the importance and value of artistic activity in Val Gardena. The bronze statue freerider was built in 2012 near the Cisles Street in S. Cristina. The climber was built in 2014 near the Tervela waterfall in S. Cristina. 108

Four wood-carved medieval statues appear as the music starts. The paintings on the wall depict the craftsmen who used to work in the area, which was once called “Ghetun”.
The old mills in Bulla, right above Ortisei, were built in the 18th and 19th century. The Zaramin mill is abandoned, but the Rumanon mill was restored in 1999 and the Droch mill in 2010. They are now fully operational. Visitors can join a guided tour and learn more about the mills and the ancient local lifestyle. In recent years the cooperation between the tourism and agricultural sectors has become more frequent and intensive. In no small part this tendency is highlighted in the form of the annual award of ”Agricultural Worker of the Year” and ”Young Agricultural Worker of the Year”. They will get the award during the festival in Vallunga of September 3rd, 2017, when the cattle comes back from the mountain pasture. The commitment of agricultural workers is hugely important for it is they who ’take care’ of the land throughout the year and their daily task involves the protection and safeguard of the local environment. So as to bring home to all the extent of their daily work the two prize-winners will be followed step by step throughout the seasons by photographers. Selected shots, chosen on the grounds of natural beauty and communication value, will be on shown in an exhibition to be held in autumn.

Highlights
6. Museum Gherdëina (Val Gardena Museum) A two-storey building houses an impressive display about history, evolution and traditions of Val Gardena, from the first settlements to the present, thanks to the legacy left by Luis Trenker.
7. Apéritif in the pedestrian areas of the towns of Val Gardena Start your evening in style, take an elegant apéritif in the traffic-free areas of the towns of Val Gardena, where the Alpine scenery and the urban atmosphere blend together.
8. San Giacomo’s Church and St. Sylvester’s Chapel San Giacomo is located right above Ortisei and it is the oldest church in Val Gardena, as it dates back to the 12th century. It is a sacred art treasure, as is St. Sylvester’s in Vallunga. Charming and silent, they both invite to reflection and meditation.
9. Nativity scene in S. Cristina Skilled and committed craftsmen enlarge year after year the largest wooden nativity scene in the world. Over Christmas, it is the background for an alpine Christmas market.
