There are several opportunities for hiking and climbing, for exciting descents in the Dolomiti Superski area, for adventurous rock and ice climbs, for mountain biking and snowshoeing. S. CRISTINA

S. Cristina Just beyond the mountains, on a sunny speck of land at 1,428 metres of altitude, lies the quiet but lively village of Santa Cristina. From its quaint streets, the towering peaks of the Odle, Puez and Sassolungo look so near you could almost touch them. The UNESCO – world heritage Dolomites offers an amazing backdrop that never fails to amaze visitors. Set as it is in the heart of the Val Gardena, the village is the ideal starting point to explore the vast network of hiking trails and, in winter, the local ski paradise comprising the Dolomiti Superski circuit, the Sellaronda trail and the Monte Pana Nordic Ski Centre. Santa Cristina owes its distinctive charm to a unique combination of century-old traditions and modern conveniences, which makes it the perfect escape for families and nature lovers. The icing on the cake? Spending your holidays in Santa Cristina will do you good – the health effects of its altitude have been demonstrated by the AMAS (Austrian Moderate Altitude Study). ORTISEI

Ortisei Leisure and activities - Ortisei (1236 m), the biggest town of the valley, blends the majestic silence of the mountains with the bustling gaiety of a hub of culture and events. Famous local personalities like Luis Trenker and Giorgio Moroder have their roots here, hence the town looks back on a long cultural tradition. However, opportunities for sport and nature lovers are numberless. Ortisei and the three hamlets Bulla, San Giacomo and Roncadizza, with a direct lift connection to the ski and hiking areas in Seceda, Alpe di Siusi, Resciesa and to the ski circuit “Sellaronda are the right place for a recreational break in the Dolomites.

GEOGRAPHY

Geography Val Gardena is a side valley of Valle Isarco, in the northwestern Dolomites of South Tyrol. It stretches for about 25 km from Ponte Gardena (471 m) up to the Sella and Gardena Passes. Some 10 km after entering the valley you enter the Ladin-speaking area, which includes Ortisei (Ladin: UrtijĂŤi), S. Cristina and Selva Val Gardena (SĂŤlva). The narrow area of Pontives forms the Ladin-German language border. The Plans de Frea form the eastern border, and westwards the Pinei Pass divides Val Gardena from Castelrotto and Laion. To the North, the valley reaches Alpe Resciesa and Funes, while Alpe di Siusi marks its southern border. From a geographical and linguistic point of view, the hamlets in the northern side of Alpe di Siusi belong to Val Gardena. However, some of them have always been part of the municipality of Castelrotto. Bulla is a separate parish.

HISTORY

History The early history of the Dolomite region is still widely unknown. The first human settlements date back to 6000 B.C. Findings from “Plan de Frea” confirm that hunters used to live there in the summer, and the excavations carried out in “Col de Flam” testify to a permanent settlement dating back to 400 B.C. Later Rhaetians whose origins remain unknown - settled in the tributary alpine valleys. In 15 B.C. the area was conquered by the Roman commander Drusus. The name Val Gardena is mentioned for the first time in 999 A.D., in a document mentioning “Forestum ad Gredine” (Val Gardena woodland) being handed over to Bishop Gottschalk from the

10

Freising Abbey. Communication had always been difficult, but in 1856 the Val Gardena road was opened and a new era began for the whole area. The Val Gardena Railway Committee, chaired by Josef Riffesser, put forward a plan to build a railway line at the beginning of the 20th century, but this did not occur until 1915 when it was needed to deliver supplies to the Austrian troops on the Dolomite front. It took just 4 ½ months to build a 31 km narrow gauge railway line which was inaugurated on 6 February 1916. After the end of the war, the steam trains continued to be crucial for moving people and goods and, in fact, more and more tourists were attracted to the area by this means of transport until the rail line was decommissioned in 1960. Today, the former railway line path, “la ferata”, from Ortisei to Selva Val Gardena via S. Cristina is a reminder of that eventful era and affords stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

LANGUAGE - AWARDS FOR GUESTS

Language The very heart of the Ladin culture is its language. Ladin belongs to the Romance language family and has been influenced both by Rhaetic and German. Ladin was probably already spoken in Val Gardena during the first century A.D. The local variety is similar to Romansh, the language spoken in Grisons, the Swiss canton. Connections with other varieties spoken in the neighbouring valleys (Val Badia, Val di Fassa, Livinallongo and Ampezzo) are also evident. Ladin was influenced by both Latin and German, assimilating the pleasant sounds of the first and integrating many words from the second. Nonetheless, it survived in the tributary valleys, and today Ladin is the first language

of most Val Gardena inhabitants. Survival of the Ladin language is supported by local radio and TV broadcasts, publications and various cultural activities, and it is also taught as a compulsory subject in schools. Some Ladin expressions: Bon di Bona sëira De gra Co es’a inuem? Assudëi Co vala pa?

Good morning Good evening Thank you What’s your name? Goodbye How are you?

Even our exceptional hospitality contributes to guests feeling at home, and has created lasting friendships over the years. Of course, this trust in our valley and hotels has to be rewarded because Val Gardena is incredibly

proud of its regular guests. All people who have stayed in the same accommodation for at least ten years shall receive a certificate and a small present. We kindly ask you to contact your accommodation. Come and visit us in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Dolomites – we know you’ll want to come back. 11

DOLOMITES - UNESCO

Dolomites - UNESCO World Heritage Site Val Gardena is the perfect getaway for your holidays, so much so it’s known throughout the world for its breathtaking nature and beautiful mountains. The UNESCO agreed to recognise the unique aspects of this region, its geological significance and, last but not least, its beauty in 2009: in that year, the Dolomites mountains were declared a World Heritage Site. A good nine mountain ranges were added to the UNESCO list. What’s more, numerous nature parks comprise the list, among them the Puez-Odle Nature Park which stretches across all three Val Gardena municipalities, covering 10,200 ha. Not just any region can make it onto the World Heritage books: in fact, only those with a special significance for humanity are considered and, upon being placed on the list, receive the UNESCO’s protection to preserve its value. In fact, it places the location under an international spotlight and turns it into an even more popular tourist destination. That is why sustainable, responsible and green tourism is a must in these locations.

Because the award is an honour and a duty at the same time. When a site is included on this list, the country has to work to preserve and protect the uniqueness and integrity of this special place for future generations. That is why mobility should also be green. For this precise reason, we have introduced a service for guests staying at accommodation establishments belonging to a Val Gardena Tourist Association. These guests can now travel for free on all buses with the Val Gardena Mobil Card. Thanks to an extensive network of routes, buses are the best way to travel around Val Gardena and reaching every location, including uphill lift facilities. The Gardena Card is also another option: use the facilities for three or six consecutive days unlimited during summer and autumn in Val Gardena. The aim is to raise unlimited awareness on the importance of the World Heritage Site. The middle school in Selva Val Gardena took part in the artistic project‚ “The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site”, during the 2014/15 school year.

Tip: You can now find the book on the topic of ”Fascination Dolomites UNESCO” in the Tourist Associations. 12

DOLOMITES - UNESCO It is precisely the extraordinary natural beauty of this imposing mountain region that secured its place on the UNESCO list, together with its geological and geomorphological significance. The majestic vertical inclines of the Pale Mountains, as they are often called, are an exceptional

collection of shapes and sizes, unique in the whole world. A motley collection of peaks, columns, towers, scrags, plateaus, scraggy walls and fields and forests. The Dolomites: a unique and unrivalled natural landscape. Past, present and future.

Dolomites UNESCO Viewpoint Mastlé S. Cristina Val Gardena At Mastlé Alp/Col Raiser in S. Cristina Val Gardena the second Dolomites UNESCO viewing platform in Alto Adige was completed. The Dolomites are part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2009. In the Natural park Puez-Odle there is a second selected viewpoint on the mountains: close to the top station of the Col Raiser Lift on 2200 meters above sea level there was recently realized a viewpoint, with the opportunity to admire the stunning alpine world of the Dolomites. The viewing platforms illustrate why the Dolomites are so extraordinary, namely their geological-landscape characteristics. The Dolomites UNESCO viewpoint at Mastlé/Col Raiser was realized after the model of Monte Specie/Strudelkopf near Dobbiaco, paying special attention to a sustainable construction. Considering the extremely sensible context there was created an object, which is closely bounded to the surroundings. The steel structure, where the index oft the visible summits is located in the middle, was filled with existing soil and stones. 13

VAL GARDENA, A PARADISE

Val Gardena – a paradise’s true value Val Gardena is an extraordinary holiday destination. Its mesmerising nature and breathtaking Alpine landscape are renowned the world over. Feast your eyes on lush green slopes, fields, forests and meadows. Yet are we even aware of this natural paradise’s true value? Some ranges from the Dolomites have had the privilege of being listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list, which is one of the main steps taken to enhance its profile and safeguard the Dolomitic landscape. One of the areas is the Puez-Odle Nature Park. Val Gardena is heaven on earth when it comes to enjoying your free time, both for locals and tourists. The summer pastures are the panoramic outlook posts of South Tyrol. Both farmers and landowners, who are not, granted, farmers in the strict sense of the word, but certainly do value their land, have been tending to their pastures as a vital part of the anthropized landscape. Even the hay, on the steepest of mountain pastures, is hand-cut and gathered. It is quite often a taxing task but the results are clear: the fields are well kept and clean. Summer pastures are a beautiful location, ideal to chill out and relax, and during 14

the summer months even the herds of cattle seem to appreciate them. Take in the wondrous environment you gaze on whilst strolling in the green woods. They are home to a rich number of plants and animals, are a source of renewable energy and significantly contribute to protecting the environment. Forests are a natural and renewable building material and are vital regulators of water levels. Furthermore, they also protect us from land- and mudslides and from falling rocks. Mountain farmers take care of them with loving affection and respect, ensuring they continue to protect us in the future. Val Gardena is a crisscross network of paths, mountain bike trails, ski and cross country ski slopes often stretching over a farmer’s land. Which is why it is important to ensure that sports enthusiasts and nature lovers respect these trails as a matter of the utmost importance. Keep to the signposted paths and trails; do not litter; drive carefully and do not speed. Respect the rules - preserve this unique landscape. For nature’s sake, for that of our future and that of our children.

VAL GARDENA, A PARADISE

A few simple rules help us protect the environment and its resources: - Always keep to the marked trails and paths; this helps prevent damage to the meadows and alpine pastures. - Do not pick protected flower species. - Respect the habitat of animals, do not make any unnecessary noise. - Do not light fires! - Do not litter! Please take your rubbish with you and dispose of it according to local regulations. - Avoid disposable items and buy drinks in returnable bottles. - For dog owners: please dispose promptly of your dog’s waste properly.

VALLEY WALKS

Summer in Val Gardena Valley walks • ”Ntëur Sëlva“ – AROUND SELVA Depart from Selva Tourist Office and follow the main road and Rio Gardena stream to the S. Elisabeta house. Head deep into the valley, sticking to the streams’ course, until Plan. At the bus stop, cross the road and you’ll find yourself on the former railway tracks. Walk to the back of the Selva Ski School and after 100 m. take a left for a jolly stroll into the Vallunga valley. Take another left upon reaching S. Silvestro chapel and, at the crossroads, follow the directions to Daunëi. The path starts sloping downhill, snaking its way by many mountain farms: head towards the village centre and you’ll soon return to the start. Walking time 2 h – Distance 8 km • legend trail towards S. Giacomo This trail lets you discover the S. Giacomo church. According to legend, a young local inhabitant, Count Jakob von Stetteneck, let it build. He dedicated it to Saint Jakob, the protector of all hikers. The path starts at the church of S. Cristina. Directly behind it, it goes through the woods. Along the way there are 16 information boards. Their drawings and texts explain the Legend of Count Jakob. From the old Festil house in S. Giacomo you already see the church 16

and after a steep but short ascent you are in front of it. Tradition holds that the S. Giacomo church is the oldest one of the whole valley, since its origin goes back to the 12th century. Its Gothic frescos in the presbytery and the paintings from the 16th century near the pulpit, which represent scenes of the legend, are valuable and unique. Walking time 50 min – Distance 2,5 km • TO VAL D’ANNA Start the walk from the valley station of Seceda cable car. The path opposite the station, at the end of the parking lot, will take you over a small, wooden bridge crossing the Anna streamlet. Follow the gurgling trail through the forest until you come across a refreshing Kneipp trail, benches and hammocks. A tempting pocket of relaxation and wellbeing. After around 20 minutes cross another bridge, from where you’ll spot a large children’s playground on the right. Continue on a forest path until the end of the valley, and return on the same path. Walking time 50 min – Distance 3 km TIP: More information about interesting walks in the brochure “Themed paths in Val Gardena”, to purchase at the Tourist Offices

E-BIKE E-BIKE You read that right: e-bikes are also part of the programme! After all, a regular tour can be quite challenging... which is why we’ve thought of a special e-bike offer. This option is for those of you who simply want to enjoy their holiday without putting too much effort into it. An e-bike will bring smiles to your faces. Simply hire an ebike for one day or the entirety of your holiday from one of the many bike rental stations dotted around Val Gardena. E-bikes are a new way to reinvent mobility and are the ideal choice for a holiday set in the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Green and quiet, simply put? Absolute perfection. RACING BIKES RACING BIKES Val Gardena is a veritable Nirvana for racing bike enthusiasts. It’s the ideal starting point for taking up interesting tours set against the backdrop of a stunning landscape unlike any other. The best period for racing biking in Val Gardena runs between May until the start of July and between September and mid-October. Our tour suggestions: • Sellaronda The Sellaronda is one of the unmissable highlights for every racing biker! Kick off in Val Gardena and ride towards the Passo Gardena and Passo Sella. At the crossroads, take a right on the SS242 towards Passo Gardena (if you’re taking the anticlockwise tour, then take a left towards the Passo Sella). Cross the Passo Gardena to bike on towards Colfosco/Corvara. Once in Corvara, continue southwards to the Passo Campolongo and towards Arabba. In Arabba, take a right and follow the N48 towards Passo Pordoi. Here, keep to the right on the N48 and continue cycling towards the Passo Sella. After 6 km, take a turn away from the Passo Pordoi to the right on the SS 242. As soon as you cross the Passo Sella, descend towards Selva Val Gardena. Duration:3 h; Length: 63 km; Difficulty: medium • Racing bike circuit to the Passo delle Erbe From Val Gardena follow SS 242 towards Chiusa until you reach Bressanone on the cycle path along the SS12. In Bressanone, continue cycling to S. Andrea and from here continue climbing to the Passo delle Erbe (1,996 m). From the Passo delle Erbe, prepare yourself for a steep descent to San Martin de Tor, cross Val Badia to Corvara. Take a right and pump your pedals for a steep climb to the Passo Gardena, to then be rewarded by a great descent to Selva Val Gardena. Duration: 6 1/2 h; Length: 122 km; Difficulty: medium/high Find more information about excursions, rental and MTB-shuttle on the pages 32-34.

HISTORY OF SKIING

Winter in Val Gardena History of skiing - how it began The world-famous skiing and hiking region offers an area packed with recreational opportunities for active, sporty and trend-conscious guests all year round. Val Gardena looks back on a long winter sports tradition: the first ski-club of Val Gardena, named “Ladinia”, was established at the beginning of the 20th century, only a few years after the first wooden skis were introduced to the Alpine valleys from the northern countries. The initial scepticism quickly turned into great enthusiasm: in 1908 the first ski races were held through the Danterceppies wood, down to Selva Val Gardena. In the following years, many ski fans were attracted by the ideal conditions of Val Gardena. The valley has produced several outstanding local skiers, and many winter sports successes have been recorded over the years (at the Olympic Games and World Cup Races): • Vinzenz Demetz, 1937, Nordic World Ski Championship in Chamonix, two bronzes in cross-country skiing (50 km and relay) • Karl Senoner, 1966, slalom World Champion in Portillo, Chile • Pepi Ploner, 1985, cross-country relay Vice World Champion • Simon Demetz, 1991, biathlon World Champion • Peter Runggaldier, 1991, downhill Vice World Champion; 1995, super-G World Cup winner • Karin Moroder, 1998, bronze in cross-country relay at the Olympics • Isolde Kostner, 2001, downhill World Cup winner, several medals at the Olympics and in the World Championships • Elena Runggaldier, 2011, ski jumping Vice World Champion • Michela Ponza, 2013, biathlon World Championship, bronze in biathlon relay • Alexia Runggaldier, 2017, biathlon World Championship, bronze. A remarkable year in the history of local ski was 1970, when the Alpine Skiing World Championships were held in Val Gardena. Ski legends Karl Schranz, Patrick Russel, Jean Noël, Bernhard Russi and Gustav Thöni all made their mark on that particular occasion. A tradition was thus established, and it is so far unbroken: every year, in December, the best Super-G World Cup and men’s downhill skiers gather from all over the world to compete on the renowned Saslong piste. 36

SKIING

Skiing - our Highlights SELLARonda Nothing compares to the Sella Group ski paradise, featuring 26 km of downhill runs. Allow 6 hours to complete this unforgettable tour, either clockwise or anti-clockwise. It offers different grade runs and the opportunity of expanding the tour to include more runs. For instance, expert skiers can enjoy the demanding World Cup downhill Saslong. 1970 world championship skiing tour You can start this exhilarating skiing tour either from Selva Val Gardena, S. Cristina or from Ortisei. If you choose Ortisei, your tour begins with the 6 km-long downhill “Südtirol Gardenissima” piste, which runs from the Seceda high plateau down to Col Raiser. An underground funicular railway connects the ski area Sochers/Ciampinoi with Col Raiser/ Seceda, thus making the climb much easier. If you choose to start from S. Cristina, you ascend to Monte Sëura, and on to Ciampinoi, Plan de Gralba and Piz Setëur, in the ski arena between the Sella Massif and Sassolungo. Afterwards, you can enjoy the run down to Selva Val Gardena on the piste where Karl Schranz won the giant slalom World Championship in 1970. The tour continues with “Cir”, the piste of the women’s downhill World Championship race, and with the “Saslong” downhill slope, which saw the success of Swiss skier Bernhard Russi in 1970. The tour ends back in Col Raiser, on the pleasant 9 km downhill run to Ortisei. Val gardena ronda The Val Gardena Ronda stretches across all of Val Gardena. Start from any of the valley’s three villages, Ortisei, S. Cristina or Selva Val Gardena and return on a circuit to the start. Here is a detailed example of one of the three routes. Start from Selva Val Gardena and, after having boarded the new Dantercëpies gondola lift, descend the slope, continue to Ciampinoi on an uphill stretch and, coasting Piz Sella, arrive at Monte Pana (S. Cristina). Continue by skibus to Alpe di Siusi with its numerous uphill lift facilities. From here you can return to Ortisei taking a gondola lift. Take the La Curta escalator to the Seceda cable car and proceed to Col Raiser (S. Cristina) where the underground funicular Gardena Ronda Express will take you to the Saslong cable car to Ciampinoi. From here, return to Selva Val Gardena.

NEW: Ski Champions Walk The route, on the path of the old railway line behind the ski school of Selva, is dedicated to all those who have won a World Cup race since 1969 or a World Championship race in 1970 in Val Gardena, as well as to who believed in the idea of skiing in Val Gardena with great ambition and pioneering spirit. 37

And those wonderful winter weeks

Also in winter Val Gardena offers everything the kids’ hearts could desire in the way of sport, fun and games - with the offer “Family special” (from 16.03.2019 on). Detailed information about the reductions on www.valgardena.it.

Ski kindergarten

That leaves their parents free to hit the slopes themselves in the knowledge that their children are being well cared for in the children’s ski courses and ski kindergarten. The service of ski kindergarten is offered by following ski schools: Ski and Snowboard School S. Cristina (from the age of 2) and Ski and Snowboard School Ortisei (from the age of 2) - see page 45.

Children’s playgrounds

CHILDREN

The Val Gardena Children’s Weeks (from 8th June until 28th June 2019) are a special programme for children, with guided walks, entertainment and games. During these weeks there are special children’s rates for accommodation (minimum stay of 7 days) in the hotels/guesthouses which participate to this offer. There is no charge for children up to the age of 8, sharing a room with their parents, and a 50% reduction for children aged between 8 and 12. There is also a 15-30% children’s reduction in apartments. The Tourist Offices have all the details.

See the symbol

on the map

Selva Val Gardena below the town hall, on Daunëi direction Vallunga, La Sëlva, La Poza, behind the Sportstadion Pranives, at Plan da Tieja near Hotel Wolkenstein. S. Cristina at the Iman Center (behind Hotel Cristallo), along the old railway line (centre, Triech and Soplases), at Plesdinaz (“Praulëta”), below the Parish Church, at Plan dala Sia (Soplases) and on Monte Pana - horse riding school Pana Horses. Ortisei on the Luis Trenker Promeneda, str. Promeneda, str. Grohmann, str. Mureda, str. Scurcià, str. Nevel, on the Annatal Promenade, at the Tennis-Center and on str. Sciron.

TIP: ”Tieres” - Animals in the woods We live in an enchanting nature, this fantastic Dolomite territory is also a natural habitat of numerous wild animals such as deer, chamois, foxes, squirrels, marmots and hares. Animals that live free are very difficult to meet, so the idea of a thematic path was born. In collaboration with the Profession School of Arts in Ortisei, students have carved the lifesized animals in wood and then they were positioned along the walks and near the woods around Selva. 52

CUISINE

Cuisine Val Gardena offers countless and unique eating experiences. Several varieties of “Knödel” (bread dumplings), strudel, traditional farm food like the buckwheat mush, delicious puddings and healthy mediterranean dishes. A tempting combination for your holiday meals.

ARTS AND CRAFT

Arts and craft The wood-carving tradition in Val Gardena started around 1600, when families would gather together during the long winter evenings and carve tools, religious images and toys to sell at the forthcoming spring markets. By the late 18th century, woodcarving had become a significant economic sector. Specific vocational schools were set up and a new modern industry was created. The work of the local sculptors even began to be acknowledged abroad. Their art continued to develop and new carving methods were adopted which led to the creation of an innovative and original craftsmanship with unrivalled quality and tradition. Enjoy the living traditions of Val Gardena, when the exhibition of nativity scenes (by Gardena Art), the Christmas Market in S. Cristina, the Christmas Village of Ortisei and the yearly Snow and Ice Sculpture Competition take place. Handicraft demonstrations and displays are frequently held in Val Gardena, such as the Sculpture Exhibition UNIKA (29 August-1 September 2019).

90

Art Gallery ART 52 is a 330 m2 exhibition hall located in the Ortisei Culture House. It houses a display of works by 52 local sculptors and painters, and provides contact details for persons interested in purchasing any of the artworks. A melting pot of styles bears witness to the distinguished craftsmanship tradition which has developed over four centuries. Open daily from 9 a.m to 10 p.m. Free entrance. Since 2000, the world’s largest nativity scene has been displayed in the Iman Sports Centre in S. Cristina. The project is being carried out by a group of 18 sculptors. It was initiated in 1998 with the first statue being that of the Holy Mary with Baby Jesus. Creativity, sensibility, sense of art and skill fostered the idea: St. Joseph, the Magi, a shepherd, a donkey, three sheep, an Angel and a camel are now part of the scene, and the family continues to grow year after year.

TRADITIONS AND THEIR COSTUMES

Traditions and their costumes Everyday life in Val Gardena is imbued with ancient traditions. Customs and celebrations take place all year round: as their original meaning often risks oblivion, retrieving and keeping them alive is crucial. Together with the Ladin language and craftsmanship, the local folk costume is at the very heart of Val Gardena culture. Its lavish decorations make it one of the most beautiful costumes in the Alps; the costume is particularly important as it identifies the social status of the person wearing it. The most beautiful costumes are worn during weddings. On such occasions, not only do they indicate the wearer’s social status, but also his/her specific role.

This edition provides a description of the younger sisters and brothers of the bridal couple, called prima dunsela and prim dunsel in Ladin: The girl wears a red jacket (camejot), a wide round pleated collar (culer) and a green hat with a sidewards curved up brim. Another symbolic accessory of the prima dunsela is the silver ornamental belt (cënta) decorated with coloured stones at the waist of the girl. On the right side of the belt hangs a silver case containing cutlery, and on the left side of the cënta hangs a silver lambshaped pendant, the symbol of the diocese Bolzano-Bressanone. The boy wears a red waistcoat (camesëul), on which stand out the green braces (fiertles). An element which is characteristic of all male costumes, and thus also of the prim dunsel’s one, is the wide leather belt (ciol), whose origin can maybe be traced back to the prehistory.

More information about Val Gardena customs and traditions can be found in the book entitled “Usanzes de Gherdëina”, available at the Tourist Office in S. Cristina. 96

MUSEUM GHERDËINA

The remains of the large ichthyosaur from Secëda (241 million years ago) are displayed in the paleontological section of the Museum.

Museum Gherdëina Geology and woodcarving, craftsmanship and Luis Trenker: you can find an overview of everything that characterises and makes Val Gardena stand out in the Museum Gherdëina at the centre of Ortisei village. The walk back in time at the museum starts more than 200 million years ago with spectacular local finds such as fossils, including the remains of the oldest fish dinosaur in the world, and continues with archaeological discoveries right on the Val Gardena crafts from the 17th century. Visitors can admire sacred and profane sculptures, world-famous Val Gardena wooden toys, but also a beautiful fasting cloth, a monumental mountain summit cross, and a multimedia presentation of late medieval drawings in red chalk. Val Gardena’s cult figure cannot be skipped: mountain climber, movie and TV star Luis Trenker, whose furniture, film memorabilia, posters, books, and awards can be seen at the museum. And there’s also a section dedicated to the farming world. THE SIGHTS

The sights Churches and chapels San Giacomo Church The San Giacomo Church is located on the ancient path Troi Paian. According to tradition, it is the oldest church in the valley. It is dedicated to St. James (San Giacomo), the patron saint of travellers and pilgrims. From Ortisei you can reach the idyllic, sunny hamlet comfortably by ski or summer bus or by car. Here you are surrounded by nature and you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view. After a 15-minute walk (slightly uphill) you will arrive to the San Giacomo Church. Alternatively, you can start from Ortisei and take a slightly sloping trail (Path of Dialogue), which takes you to the San Giacomo Church in about an hour. Another beautiful circular walk connects S. Cristina (Plesdinaz) with the church. The current overall appearance is Gothic, and the inside is part Gothic and part Baroque. The church features remarkable frescoes (late 15th century) in the presbytery. Wall paintings from the 16th century, illustrating the legend of San Giacomo (St. James), decorate the area near the pulpit. The local woodcarving tradition is represented in the main altar. Around 1750 the Vinazer-Pescosta brothers decorated it with spiral columns, gilded images of ancient church leaders, apostles and angels. The current sculptures and artwork on the main altar are replicas made by local carvers. The originals are on display at the Val Gardena Museum in Ortisei. Opening times: from beginning of July to mid September. More information and the detailed opening times are available at the Tourist Office Ortisei. 104

THE SIGHTS

“Santa Maria ad Nives” - Selva Val Gardena Parish Church The 19th century Neo-Gothic nave was dismantled in 1988 and replaced by an 8-sided building. The chancel and the main altar painting by Lucas Cranach date back to 1670. In 1503 Wilhelm von Wolkenstein had a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary built on this spot. It became a major pilgrimage destination, and was subsequently enlarged. The outer wall of the sacristy still bears a Von Wolkenstein coat of arms made of granite.

St. Sylvester’s Chapel in Vallunga Selva Val Gardena This tiny, charming place of silence and meditation was dedicated to the patron saint of cattle. 300 yearold frescoes illustrating the history of Jesus’ life were uncovered during restoration work in 1993. Memorial Chapel to Mountain Victims The chapel was built in the Selva Val Gardena’s graveyard to commemorate all mountaineers who die in the Dolomites in Val Gardena. Their names are engraved in a large copper book.

Gardena Pass Chapel The chapel was built by the local “Alpini” groups and it is dedicated to their patron saint, St. Maurice. It was inaugurated in Spring 2004.

S. Cristina Parish Church A chapel dedicated to Santa Cristina existed here probably at the end of the 12th century. A Romanesque church was mentioned in a papal document in 1342. The bell tower walls, up to the roof eaves, date back to that period. The church was extensively altered and enlarged: the choir is in the Gothic style, and a polygonal ossuary was added in the 16th century. The main altar (1690, Vinazer dynasty of sculptors) is worth a visit. The bronze statue of St. Philomena by Dominik Mahlknecht, once in the ossuary, is now in the main square of S. Cristina. 105

THE SIGHTS

Ortisei Parish Church Two aisles were added to the late Baroque building at the beginning of the 20th century. This remarkable church is decorated with several paintings, carvings, statues and images (among which a statue of St. Ulrich by Ludwig Moroder and the altar painting depicting the “Adoration of the Magi” by Josef Moroder-Lusenberg).

St. Anna’s Chapel A small church built at the beginning of the 15th century in the Ortisei’s graveyard. It features a noteworthy portal and several ancient gravestones and memorials. St. Anthony’s Chapel Photographers love the turrets of this plain building erected in 1673 on the main square in Ortisei. It features an altar painting depicting St. Anthony from Padua, by the Swiss painter Melchior Paul von Deschwanden.

Roncadizza Parish Church Josef Runggaldier commissioned this parish in 1900 to honour St. Joseph as a sign of his gratitude after having survived an accident whilst working in the woods. A painting inside the church depicts the episode. The extension project was stopped in 1979. However, a new church was started in 1981 and consecrated in 1984.

Bulla Parish Church The beautiful Romanesque church, dedicated to St. Leonard, was built around the 13th century. Its main altar dates back to the 18th century.

The Holy Cross Chapel, built in 1755 in Resciesa di Fuori (over 2200 m) is also worth a visit. The chapel was restored in summer 2012. 106

Fischburg Castle - Castel Gardena The castle was built between 1622 and 1641 by Engelhard Dietrich von Wolkenstein-Trostburg. It is located between Selva and S. Cristina and was used as a summer and hunting lodge. In 1863, Count Leopold von Wolkenstein-Trostburg granted the castle to S. Cristina municipality to transform it into an almshouse. The castle has been owned by the Franchetti Barons since 1926, and it is currently closed to the public. Wolkenstein Castle A steep path starts near the “Carabinieri” training centre in Vallunga (Selva) and heads up to the castle ruins. Built at the beginning of the 13th century, it collapsed in 1525 and has never been rebuilt. It has been owned by the Wolkenstein family since the 14th century. Oswald von Wolkenstein, a famous minstrel and poet born in South Tyrol between 1376 and 1387, died in Merano in 1445, probably spent his summers in the castle. Stetteneck Castle In the summer of 2000, in Val d’Anna in Ortisei on the so-called Pincan hill at the foot of the Balest mountain, remains of a wall from the 13th century were discovered. The researches revealed that it must be the ruins of the Stetteneck Castle, which was nominated only once in a document of 1324. Thus, only little information about it exists. Adelheid, daughter of Knight Gebhard von Stetteneck, was probably the last owner of the castle. The excavations are still in progress. Among the present finds are also the remains of a Romanesque portal. Stetteneck Castle, situated at the ancient trade route Troi Paian, is believed to be the castle of a renowned robber baron mentioned in a local legend by Karl Felix Wolff. The lord of the castle extorted heavy tolls from passing merchants or held them for ransom in the dungeon. At the time, legend had it that a virgin had been walled up in the castle foundations: if another virgin were to die in the castle, the whole building would collapse. One day the Lord’s granddaughter was seriously injured while attempting to set some prisoners free. All the servants and prisoners fled from the castle for fear of it collapsing, but the Lord remained at the side of his dying grandchild while the building fell down around them. The ruin cannot be visited at the moment.

The freerider and the climber The eponymous bronze statues were built on the “Raida dl luech” walk in S. Cristina. The project is the result of a competition backed by the partnership between S. Cristina, the Tourist Association and the S. Cristina Art Sculpture Association to embellish the “Raida dl luech” and to to emphasize the importance and value of artistic activity in Val Gardena. The bronze statue freerider was built in 2012 near the Cisles Street in S. Cristina. The climber was built in 2014 near the Tervela waterfall in S. Cristina. 108

Highlights

Val Gardena’s 10 Highlights

1. Sellaronda for active people Enjoy 26 km of downhill runs or 58 kilometers on your mountain bike - the circuit around the Sella Massif is an unforgettable experience in all seasons.

2. Art Gallery ART 52 This permanent exhibition of handcarved sculptures and art-paintings in the Ortisei Culture House gives the possibility to admire woodcarvings of our best artists and artisans.

3. Climbing mountains with a guide Val Gardena sits in the heart of the Dolomites, where the Unesco World Heritage peaks offer breathtaking views. Discover our mountains and keep safe: hire a trained local guide.

4. Circular path around Sassolungo The hike starts at Passo Sella. Enjoy 10 km of stunning views and scenery, along the legendary Federico Augusto path and CittĂ dei Sassi (the city of stones).

5. Gardena Card and Val Gardena Mobil Card The Gardena Card mobility pass is a convenient way to enjoy the view from the top without long climbs up. With the Val Gardena Mobil Card: free use of all buses. Subject to changes

Highlights

6. Museum Gherdëina (Val Gardena Museum) A two-storey building houses an impressive display about history, evolution and traditions of Val Gardena, from the first settlements to the present, thanks to the legacy left by Luis Trenker.

7. Apéritif in the pedestrian areas of the towns of Val Gardena Start your evening in style, take an elegant apéritif in the traffic-free areas of the towns of Val Gardena, where the Alpine scenery and the urban atmosphere blend together.

8. San Giacomo’s Church and St. Sylvester’s Chapel San Giacomo is located right above Ortisei and it is the oldest church in Val Gardena, as it dates back to the 12th century. It is a sacred art treasure, as is St. Sylvester’s in Vallunga. Charming and silent, they both invite to reflection and meditation.

9. Nativity scene in S. Cristina Skilled and committed craftsmen enlarge year after year the largest wooden nativity scene in the world. Over Christmas, it is the background for an alpine Christmas market.

10. World Championship downhill piste ”Saslong” Over a December weekend the best alpine skiers compete in a race on the challenging Saslong piste and its camel bumps.
