The Dolomites: beautiful nature Mountains are the oldest and most sustainable natural heritage of our times: they emerged from the depths of the earth, breaking its surface, as a result of the movement of the tectonic plates. The rocky formations have witnessed the planet’s history. One of these formations, known all over the world due to its unique traits and its unmistakable constellation of summits, is the Dolomites. They have been a long-standing attraction for countless generations over the last centuries.

In 2009, UNESCO added this natural heritage to its World Heritage Site list. The mountains attract both tourists and mountaineers year after year to their valleys, its wealth of flora and fauna, breathtaking sceneries and countless opportunities for sport enthusiasts. In the western part of the Dolomites you’ll find the Puez-Odle Nature Park. It was opened in 1978: a unique biotope which stretches across 10,000 hectares of land, attracting countless hikers and geologists. This is where you can document the history of millions of years on your skin. All the rocks of the Dolomites, including the dolomite itself – which lends its name to the rocky formations – can be found here, witness to the timeless and susceptible nature of this landscape: something which is rarely seen in other places.

Diving into nature The Puez-Odle Nature Park lies between the summits of the Odle group, the Puez group and the Sass de Putia, attracting both animal and plant enthusiasts. Wander around and marvel at the unspoilt nature: just how it is supposed to be.

Thick spruce and pine thickets spring up next to dense larch forests on a bed of lush, green meadows and plateaus stretching out as far as the eye can see. Spring awakens crocuses, snowbells and pulsatilla; even adventurous hikers braving the wuthering heights can see the edelweiss. The Nature Park is home to countless animals living in the forests, meadows and the sky. The golden eagle sways in the lofty heights together with the kestrel flying by the treetops and summits home to the Alpine ibex and chamois. Groundhogs pop up from the ground in the forests, together with foxes and deer, which at times cross your path on the walking routes in the valleys and

forests. You will have the unique opportunity to observe nature in all its shapes and become part of a region where the development of the exchanges between flora and fauna are still a key priority. Environmental protection has always played a key role.

Exclusive for the guests of our partner accommodation facilities: board all buses for free with the Val Gardena Mobil Card. Get from A to B easily: from local villages to lift facilities.

Summer culinary delights There are many culinary events this summer, ranging from the “Sëira dl vin”, “Gourmet Urtijëi” to “Aperitif Urtijëi”, where guests can discover and taste traditional products and culinary novelties of the region.

Home sweet home Val Gardena doesn’t only stand out for its beautiful location, set at the heart of the Dolomites: its three villages are also quite the attraction, with their welcoming and idyllic charm. A home away from home for our guests.

The three villages in Val Gardena, namely Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva Gardena, are a constant reminder of how, despite our chaotic times, nothing is truly lost. Every season offers a beautiful view on the picturesque traffic-free pedestrian areas, countless boutiques and shops and invite us to while away the hours in cafes, bars and restaurants. Traditional cuisine of Val Gardena and South Tyrol is an ever present component, enriched by Italian flair and taste. Nobody will be disappointed by traditional guest houses and the small eateries: try an aperitif, or a meal for two in a relaxed setting, or a hearty family meal. There’s something for everyone. Why do guests always feel at home in Val Gardena? The answer is simple: hospitality is a way of life in the valley, and its inhabitants endeavour to make everyone feel at home.

Val Gardena in autumn Nature sports new colours in Val Gardena, as the first autumn leaves fall to the ground. The area explodes in a burst of colours at all heights, and both man and animal start preparing for the cold months lying in wake around the corner. A spectacle which, although may occur every year, knows how to surprise with something new each time.

Val Gardena wears a completely new and wondrous face when the first leaves start to blush red and orange, when the deer prepares for the rutting season and the groundhog for its long winter slumber. The hiking trails of the valley fill up with both tourists and locals. Before winter arrives, the cattle are taken down from the lofty heights of the valley. For this occasion the cows are adorned with beautiful flower crowns and large bells in Vallunga in Selva Gardena. During the yearly festival it is not only the cow with the most beautiful flower crown which is awarded the prize, but also the agricultural worker and young agricultural worker of the year are awarded one. Locals celebrate the end of the grazing period by tucking into traditional Val Gardena desserts.

The “Segra Sacun” market in Ortisei Every year, the day after S. Jacob’s celebration, the traditional “Segra Sacun” market, takes place. Artisanal products and culinary delicacies from the region are put up for sale. You can have a look and pick typical products, and local associations will provide you with local culinary offers from their stalls.

Museum Gherdëina The Museum Gherdëina in Ortisei is open during summer and winter. It is of interest for both fans of culture and history, as well as the interested amateur geologists and archaeologists. In fact, it displays the history of Val Gardena from different aspects. On top of seasonal, ever changing exhibitions, you can also see unique examples of the Val Gardena wood carving craft, archaeological findings of the region from the Stone Age, as well as fossil remains which tell the story of the development of the mountains of the Sella Group. A unique collection which is well worth a visit.

Tradition and culture Tradition has been at the heart of the Val Gardena valley for centuries and is the most valuable possession of locals. It may be a comparably small region, yet this has not stopped the valley from upholding its extraordinary culture to this very day.

Locals proudly wear the Val Gardena local clothes during processions and festivities: one of the most decorated and beautiful in the whole region. One thing which stands out is the “Gherlanda spiza” crown, traditionally worn by unwed women. Italian, German and Ladin are spoken in Val Gardena. Ladin is a Rhaeto-Romance language, which is spoken by 30,000 people and which has lived on to this day. In the local schools, Ladin is a compulsory subject, which just goes to show how important it is to maintain this precious heritage in Val Gardena today. In the rest of the region, the valley has been known for a long time for its special and skilful wooden workings. In the past, wood was shaped during long, winter nights with rudimentary tools. Today, this craft still is part of tradition and is displayed during various exhibitions. Enjoy contemporary and traditional pieces.

The “flauto magico”, a fascinating ice waterfall, which can be found in the remote Vallunga, is one of the favourite spots amongst ice climbs and can be an impressive feat with a demanding climb together with a mountain guide. Winter magic Winter in Val Gardena doesn’t only stand out for its extensive sport offer. Winter sports are part of the season, yes, but so are a relaxing hut, traditional Christmas markets and much more: the perfect pre-Christmas excuse for a great winter holiday.

Skiers can experience winter in Val Gardena by stopping in one of the many mountain huts which are located on the slopes. Here you can eat good food or let the night while away in a relaxed atmosphere. It wouldn’t be a winter holiday without skiing and Après-Ski. A special atmosphere can be lived during the torch light ski run of the ski schools, which set the ski slopes into a flickering display of light as the night approaches. Special manual dexterity is shown by local Val Gardena artists with their ice and snow sculptures. They shape the ice with their chisels and create a special and unforgettable atmosphere, which will enrich every winter holiday.

Pre-Christmas feeling Ortisei becomes a magical Christmas village for 40 days, where visitors can find regional products and Christmas delicacies. You can also discover many things in the original Val Gardena Christmas Market in S. Cristina, where detail is key: unique traditional products as far as the eye can see.

Val Gardena Val Gardena lies between the Sella group, the Passo Sella and the Passo Gardena and Ponte Gardena, in the middle of the northwest Dolomites in South Tyrol. A narrow ravine in the Val d’Isarco leads to this wonderful, 25km long valley at the heart of the Dolomites. It belongs to one of the most fascinating and diverse mountain landscapes in the world and, year on year, enchants mountaineers and tourists alike with its unique location.

Ortisei

The valley is crossed by the Gardena brook and has three main villages: Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva Gardena. Around 10,000 citizens are known for their friendliness and hospitality and excellent traditions. The idyllic placed and picturesque villages enchant tourists in summer and winter with a rich offer of leisure and sport activities. Ortisei is the main village of Val Gardena: the picturesque city centre invites you to walk, shop and while away the hours in small cafes and restaurants, which can be found on every corner. Ortisei is also well known for its countless leisure activities and art and culture scene, which stand out for its traditional wood carvings. Set between the Odle group and Monte Pana, at the bottom of the Pic mountain, lies the small village of S. Cristina, which is ideal for hikers, mountaineers and winter athletes due to its location. At the end of the valley, in the heart of the Sellaronda,

S. Cristina

lies Selva Gardena only a couple km away from S. Cristina. Culture abounds as well as sport: Selva Gardena is always well visited during summer and winter. Val Gardena is always well worth a visit regardless of the season, it enchants with its breathtaking location at the heart of the Dolomites, a big leisure offer for all ages and a strong tradition encourages open-minded locals, which show what it means to be part of Val Gardena.
