Editor’s Letter... Getting the “Maxim” out of life – (Maxim: a proverbial saying) Years ago, a friend visiting from Australia wanted a true southern experience, especially sampling grits and gravy and biscuits. In return, she gifted me with a jar of vegemite. I still don’t think it was a fair exchange. Her visit was filled with trips to places unique to our area. Growing up here, it’s easy to forget how special North Alabama is until you see it through the eyes of someone experiencing it for the first time. At the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, I purchased charms for both of us with four simple words: “Life Is a Journey”. When you’re young, you envision what life will hold. Maybe not in detail, but overall, you know what you want and nothing is going to stop you… until it does. Detours can take us places we never expected to go. Some are amazing, beyond our wildest dreams and some, not so much. “Never Say Never”… another maxim I’ve learned firsthand. In my younger days, I had all of the answers. I realize now I didn’t even know all of the questions. Advice can flow freely to others facing a challenge. But we really don’t know unless hit with it ourselves. Even then, life experiences, personalities and beliefs make it different. We may reach the same destination, or stop at the same pit-stops, but we’re all on our own personal journey. Tempting as it is to gauge “winning” by being on track to our destination, don’t forget, the unexpected moments are what make life meaningful. Take time to learn, grow, and appreciate the moment. That small silver charm still hangs in my office: a memory of a special time and a reminder, even in hard times, to find the joy along the way. In these pages, find stories about other’s journeys and advice from professionals willing to help you, wherever you are on yours. Enjoy!

Family...
Our parents, our children and our grand children: caring for the people we love.
Some traditions to start with your own family:
We all have those stories, the ones that seemed like disasters at the time, but ended up a fondly retold tale about our family. I still share the one about
my best birthday cake ever. I was around 7 or 8. My sister, a young teenager, decided to make my cake. She did a beautiful job…. until time for the icing. I think no one ever told her to let the cake cool first. With the first spoonful, a small crack appeared. As we frantically tried to fill the crack with more icing, a huge crater developed…time for more icing. That was the worst looking cake ever, but the best tasting. I still remember looking at her from the other side of the kitchen bar, eyes wide and breaking into laughter. We sometimes forget it’s the small things that are remembered. One of our favorite family traditions was a book I read my son every Christmas Eve after tucking him into bed. It continued until he decided he was too old and it was time to put it away to read his children. But every year, he would still bring it out to look at.

loneliest Journey The
I grew up hearing stories of my great-aunt, Hazel. She died long before I was born, three weeks after giving birth, at only 21.
I was told my great-grandmother never got over it. I couldn’t understand. She had another daughter and eight grandkids. Why wasn’t that enough? Because she was forced upon the road of the loneliest journey. Until you experience it, you cannot understand the bond between a parent and child. The bond with each child is different, but just as strong. It is your heart, a piece of your soul, all of your hopes and dreams rolled into one. For most parents, the one desire is for them to be healthy and happy. Losing a child is exactly the same, but totally opposite. The opposite: It is the ripping away of those things, a hole in your soul that will never be filled. Something you have to learn to live around, never heal from. The price of great love is great grief. The deep love for your child does not stop just because they are no longer here to hug. The same: Until you live it, you have no understanding. Grieving parents fear their child being forgotten, as if they never existed. Not by them, that will never happen, but by others. For a parent, everyday tasks and household items hold memories of conversations, hugs and laughter that will never happen again.
by Susan Voiers Something as simple a trip to the grocery store, even years later, means remembering there is no need to buy their child’s favorite food. For someone on the outside, it’s uncomfortable. The fear of saying the wrong thing, of reminding them of what they have lost keeps most quiet. And some, because they are not living it, do not understand why a parent has not “gotten over” it yet. So the parent puts on a smile and tells you everything is ok, while their heart cracks a little more as their next worst fear materializes, their child is no longer mentioned, just as if they never existed. If you are not walking that road, it can be hard to understand how to help someone else through it. And that is ok. After all, none of us knew either until we were unwillingly thrust into that private “club”. One of the best things a friend said to me after losing my son was “I want to say some magic words to make it better, but there are none.” She did not tell me time would heal, things happen for a reason, at least... she was just there. If someone in your life has started on the loneliest journey, no matter how long ago, the best gift you can give them is to just be there. They have not forgotten their child is dead. They face it every second of every day. You are not reminding them. Ask about their child, let them talk, let them know that for that moment, they are safe to take off the mask and open their heart.

RitesofPassage “A strong woman is one who feels deeply and loves fiercely. Her tears flow as abundantly as her laughter. A strong woman is both soft and powerful, she is both practical and spiritual. A strong woman in — Unknown her essence is a gift to the world.” by Susan Voiers You view life’s experiences as your “rites of passage.” No one else can claim those exact ones. They have given you your own style and made you who you are. No matter what life brings, you continue to move forward, learn, find the good, and attempt to leave the bad behind. I can relate. I have had many experiences, some wonderful, some downright devastating. I know what it is like to feel life has knocked you to the bottom. The worst came when I lost my son. As terrible as that was, will always be, I know he would want me to continue moving forward and to encourage others to do the same. As a child, he was constantly gifting me with some fascinating rock he had found. His love for nature never left. After losing him, we found the 10 stones he always carried in his pocket. Seeking a way to keep them safe, we stumbled across wire wrapping. Fascinated, my dream of 30 years, to design jewelry, came to life. And WV3 Designs (his initials) was born. At heart, I’ve always wanted to be a story teller, but not my story, to tell other’s stories. One of my passions was family history research. It was never about dates and details, but diving deeper to understand who these people were, to ensure they were remembered. As a girl, I loved digging through my mother’s “turquoise” chest…it was really a jewelry box…but hey, a girl can dream. Awed at the distinction in each stone, each with its own story, I’m sure that’s where my fascination with turquoise started. Designs have evolved to include styles from boho to classic, using mainly natural stones and materials. Inspiration flows from nature, history, the beauty of the stone, and the passion to help others tell who they are, about one of their “rites of passage”. It is a gift from God, a way to share my son’s love of nature with others, and touch the lives of other strong women who have or are in the process of overcoming their own knocks from life. I have been honored to work with other moms to create a one of a kind piece, incorporating a special stone, birthstone or symbol with meaning for their child. I have been excited to work with brides to design a unique compliment for their special day, and with many others for occasions in-between. The mission is always to understand what makes them who they are and their style, then, create something that allows them to display it proudly.
What’s in your memory chest? Life is made of memories. Instead of locking yours away, display them proudly.

Finance... Looking out for everything we have worked so hard for.
Money Can’t Buy Love,
But Can It Buy
HAPPINESS? What are your most cherished memories, things you have purchased or the experiences you have had? Think back to that gift you spent so much time and money on and your child spent more time playing with the box. The thrill and newness of the purchase can wear off quickly. But that does not mean that going without will make you happy either. The answer is yes, money can buy happiness, but only when it is spent on the right things. To buy true happiness, the kind that lasts way past opening the box, ask yourself these questions: – Will it buy me time? Will it save you time and energy to spend on things you enjoy? – Am I purchasing an experience? Memories from a vacation, concert, movie or something with sentimental meaning will last long past the thrill of the purchase. – Am I creating debt that will lead to stress instead of happiness? Buy now, pay later may feel good in the moment, but is the purchase worth the trade? – Am I spending on something meaningful for someone else? We love the smile when we hand someone a gift. But are you choosing something that is going to bring them happiness past the opening stage, something that creates an experience for them? – Am I investing in others? We feel good when we help others. Is this purchase going to impact someone else through either an act of kindness or is it something they truly need? – Will the purchase save money? Buying in bulk, main tenance on the house or car may be a chunk now, but sometimes you have to spend money to save money. 12 • valleyvitalliving.com
– Am I purchasing quality? Do not make the mistake of purchasing lower cost items to save money. Will they last or do the job correctly? Will they end up costing more in the long run? – Does it make me smile? Does it enhance something you already have so you can enjoy it more? – Is it something I have always wanted but now the timing or price is right?

COVER YOUR ASSETS! You’ve worked hard preparing a nest egg for that next phase of life. The reward is finally within your grasp. Breathe that sigh of relief. Or can you?? Proper insurance is crucial for retaining your life’s investment. Often overlooked and underappreciated are your insurance policies' ability to protect you from lawsuits. In today’s ‘want something for nothing’ culture it’s more important than ever to have adequate coverage. Each policy, whether it’s for your car, home, boat, motorcycle‌. has two very important pieces. One, uninsured and underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage, protects you from the other guy. The other, liability, protects you from the other guy’s highway billboard attorney. Both coverages have a policy limit, a cap on how much your insurance provider will pay out in such scenarios. Both are important, but each can be particularly important, depending on your situation, including your stage in life. UM/UIM can cover hospital expenses for you and your family but more importantly lost wages if an auto accident injury leaves you unable to work. Liability is important because it pays these expenses for the other person. Now the rubber meets the road. If your liability limits are insufficient to cover the other person’s expenses, it could mean lawsuit, jeopardizing your entire net worth: future income, home, savings,
retirement accounts, other assets, even life insurance if you leave that debt behind to loved ones. The state of Alabama only requires a minimum coverage of $25,000 for the other person’s medical expenses. If you have minimum coverage, it could easily be inadequate to cover hospital costs. We are your holistic risk advisor. You deserve more than 15 minutes. We take the time to fully understand your unique situation so we can recommend the right coverages. Insurance is about managing the risk to your car, home, and your entire life’s savings. We understand it can be costly. But we also know the devastation that can occur when the risk management strategies in place are insufficient. We see it every day and our customers have better peace of mind because they made the choice to trust us.

THE MOST
FORGOTTEN EXPENSES
When making a budget or deciding what expenses to plan for in retirement, it is easy to remember the big things: house and car payments, insurance, utilities, etc. Others can be easy to overlook, meaning we do not always plan for them. Some items that may be missing from your budget: $ Changes in utility bills $ Seasonal yard maintenance $ Special occasion gifts: birthday, holiday, anniversary $ Car: registration, tags, driver’s license renewal $ Donations: charities, non-profits, special needs $ Maintenance: car and home $ Subscriptions: magazines, online, cable alternatives $ Clothing: new, repairs, alterations $ Travel: day trips, gas, vacations $ Hobbies: supplies, lessons, participation $ Household and cleaning supplies $ Pets: food, grooming, vet fees, pet sitting $ Membership fees: health clubs, saving clubs (Sam’s, Costco), AAA $ Entertainment, especially for special events (anniversary, birthday, etc.) $ Emergencies: doctor, hospital, lost income, prescriptions Life is expensive. Unexpected things come up, but you can be prepared for them. Look where you might be able to cut unnecessary expenses: pay down bills, eat out less, look for bargains and sales. Consider looking for ways to make additional income: start a part time business, turn a hobby into income, start an errand service, tutor. Make a budget and stick to it, but make sure you include some mad money, just for fun. Consider meeting with a financial planner to make sure you are on track and avoid unpleasant surprises. 14 • valleyvitalliving.com

“Estate Planning” is the area of law which always requires tailoring individual circumstances. Proper estate planning allows people to arrange the management, protection, and distribution of their assets during their lifetime, to prepare for “what if” circumstances that may arise like injury or dementia, and to delegate the distribution of assets after death. The goals of any good estate plan should include maximizing benefits (Medicaid, VA), minimizing taxes, and ensuring your desires regarding medical care, treatment, and end-of-life issues are honored. The tools utilized to accomplish these things include Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney (POA, HCPOA), advance directives, financial planning, and benefit programs. Estate planning impacts all ages and is not limited to adulthood. A child who has special needs or has lost a parent requires estate planning. When children are added to a family, the simple planning for young adults (Will, POA, HCPOA) needs to change to more comprehensive plans which include guardians and under-age testamentary trusts. Divorce requires adjustments to planning by revoking previous authority and designating new beneficiaries, at a minimum. At retirement,

emphasis shifts to maximizing the use of assets, business succession, protecting assets from the government, and easing them to the next generation. The possibility of failing health and mental capacity makes planning for emergencies and long-term care vital. In short, any major life change or transition should prompt a review of the planning a person has in place. Alabama Estate Planning Attorneys works with you to design and create a personalized estate plan, not a one-size-fits all, fill in the blank form. SO, I HAVE CREDIT MONITORING! IS MY IDENTITY SAFE NOW?
It’s All About YOU! Let me help you be proactive, protect your joy & alleviate chaos by putting Your Law Firm & ID Theft Advisor in the palm of your hand
For About $1 per day Protect the two most important things:
By Christopher B. Grounds, PhD, CIPA Benefits4Success
As a result of its massive data breach in 2017, Equifax has been offering affected parties the choice of credit monitoring or $125. Since many respondents picked the cash settlement, they had to “backpedal” and the cash option will be much lower. That leaves credit monitoring your only option. Credit monitoring ONLY monitors your credit, not the personal information contributing to your credit. It works as follows: 1. Depending on the reporting agency, if your personal data is used to secure a line of credit, you will receive an alert, usually 24-48 hours later. 2. You contact the credit agency to dispute the event and then work with them to remove it from your credit record. If you can prove you have lost money due to that particular data breach – It isn’t easy since most people have experienced multiple data breaches – you are eligible for up to $1 Million in reimbursement for time/costs incurred.
An easier way is to freeze your credit, prohibiting lenders from inquiring about it. All three agencies currently allow you to do this for free. • Equifax – www.freeze.Equifax.com • Experian – www.experian.com/ncaconline/freeze • TransUnion – www.transunion.com/credit-freeze What can identity thieves do with your personal data? According to the Federal Trade Commission credit card or loan fraud (alerted on your credit report) are only two of many types of identity theft complaints. Others include employment fraud; federal and state taxes filing; utilities fraud; social security or welfare fraud; and most dangerously, criminal or medical fraud. How do I handle identity theft? 33% of adults have been the victim of identity theft, many of them multiple times. 16 • valleyvitalliving.com

Benefits4success.com Your personal data has probably been stolen several times – most victims are not aware for months or years. • Be Proactive. Know when your information is being sold online or on the dark web/deep web. Have a professional identity theft protection service proactively monitor the black market for your data. • Don’t go it alone. When an occurrence does happen, utilize that same licensed professional service to fix it for you, not just advise you what to do. According to the FTC, it takes an average of six months and 200 hours of work to recover.
Author’s Note: What does it really mean? If you’re like me, you’ve been affected by multiple data breaches and offered several credit monitoring services for free. Will that protect your identity? Hardly! Remember, included in your credit information is your name, social security number, birthdate, and home address. Data stolen in a breach can also be used for a multitude of other criminal purposes. Choosing the right Identity Theft protection is critical.

Tired of Being Tired?
You want to feel good and enjoy life. But when you are in pain or always tired, it is hard to find joy in the little things. Inflammation is your body’s response to injury, a way to protect itself and start healing. Stub your toe and it is easy to see the results. But inflammation happens within the body in a more unnoticeable way. Chronic inflammation is the result of long term oxidative stress, and can be caused by physical or emotional trauma or pollutants. If you are tired and achy, your body is trying to tell you something. Untreated, inflammation leads to more serious, long-term issues. It has been linked to many diseases including arthritis, bursitis, IBS, Alzheimer’s, and dozens more.
Common symptoms:
skin · Fatigue · Itchy Aches and Pains Allergies or infections · Gastrointestinal Issues · Mood swings or depression · ·
There are medical ways to lower inflammation. If you want to try a more natural path first, avoid refined carbohydrates, sugar, gluten, red and processed meats, and artificial additives. Foods that may help lower inflammation are fruits, vegetables, fish and other proteins, nuts, and seeds. Some herbs and supplements like omega-3, turmeric, and ginger, among others have proven promising in studies to lower inflammation. Exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and limit alcohol consumption. Seek advice from your doctor, and a professional you trust who specializes in helping you change diet and activity patterns. While the natural approach may not be enough, it is a good start, and may lower the need for medication.

I Remember When... Essential Oils for Brain Health
By Andrea L. Shetley
Feeling dazed and confused? Can’t remember recent events? “Brain fog” refers to issues with memory, clarity, and focus. In 2015, a Frontiers in
Neuroscience article reported people with chronic fatigue syndrome, autism/neuropsychiatric disorders, celiac disease, gluten intolerance, food allergies, fibromyalgia, and Alzheimer’s are more likely to suffer from brain fog. Symptoms include fatigue, irritability, headaches, forgetfulness, low motivation, mild depression, anxiety, confusion, sleep issues, and difficulty exercising. Triggers include stress, dehydration, poor sleep, hormonal changes, poor diet, medications, medical conditions, inflammation, mold, prolonged standing, too much heat/sun, food allergies, and lack of exercise. Brain fog has become an unwanted side effect of our fast-paced, industrialized lifestyle; but it doesn’t have to be permanent. Smell produces powerful mental, physiologic, emotional, and spiritual responses, and is often linked to memory. When an odor molecule is inhaled, it is sensed by the olfactory cells, which go to the brain. The olfactory system is the only sensory mechanism that involves the limbic system and amygdala in its primary processing pathway, which includes the hippocampus (long-term memory), amygdala (emotions), hypothalamus (autonomic nervous system, hormones), and cingulate gyrus (blood pressure, heart rate, attention). Essential oils promote focus and concentration by helping to regulate the nervous system. Essential oils (EOs) are volatile aromatic compounds found in many plants. EOs create aroma that protect plants from harsh environments and insects, help them adapt to surroundings, and assist in pollination. Distilling different plant parts harnesses these protective and beneficial powers. EOs are highly concentrated and extremely potent—just one drop can have powerful health benefits. EOs have been used for thousands of years in many cultures for personal care, religious ceremonies, beauty treatments, and food preparation, and are gaining popularity as natural, safe, and cost-effective wellness options. Because of well-documented trials, many traditional hospitals (e.g., Vanderbilt University Hospital) are now using EOs to combat anxiety, depression, and infections. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) acts like a sieve or filter. Only very small molecules can pass through and they must be lipid (fat) soluble—EOs are both. EOs are made up of organic compounds called “terpenes.” Sesquiterpenes can pass through the BBB and contain brain-oxygenating molecules. Research shows increased oxygenation extends to the pituitary and pineal glands, and can help restore hormonal imbalances. Studies performed 20 • valleyvitalliving.com
at Vienna and Berlin Universities found that sesquiterpenes in Vetiver, Patchouli, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, and Frankincense EOs can increase levels of oxygen in the brain by up to 28%. Geographic location, distilla tion methods, weather, and other factors can affect purity. Unfortunately, products labeled as 100% pure EO may contain as little as 5% pure EO with other potentially harmful ingredients. Unwanted contaminants/toxins in inferior/substandard EOs can contribute to the toxic load in the brain. Pure EO may only contain 5% pure EO with other potentially harmful ingredients. 100% pure therapeutic-grade EOs from a reputable company are highly recommended. It is easy to incorporate EOs into your daily lifestyle to enjoy a variety of benefits. Always follow label instructions; consult a healthcare professional; and educate yourself on safety precautions, applications, and uses. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This article is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

General Essential Oil Application: Aromatic: Cold air/water diffusers, personal inhaler, wooden clothes pin clipped to a vent, or aromatherapy jewelry. Topical: Applying carrier oil first or mixing with EOs slows absorption; applying carrier oil after EOs accelerates absorption. Light massage to the application area increases blood flow and improves distribution. To avoid skin sensitivity (especially young/sensitive skin), use a carrier oil to dilute more potent EOs and when trying an EO for the first time (recommended dilution: one drop of EO to three drops of carrier oil). Start with a low dose (1–2 drops). Dose will vary based on size, age, and overall health. Use several small doses throughout the day as recommended. Internal: Used in general food preparation and as dietary supplements for more targeted/potent health benefits. Proper dosing according to product label and professional guidelines should be strictly followed to avoid toxicity.
Layer on back of neck with a few drops of carrier oil (see Application box).

Home... Tips, ideas and making the most of your space.
You’ve Come a Long Way Baby! Years ago, the kitchen was only a place to prepare meals. Usually, it was located at the back of the house, or many years ago, in a separate building altogether. From its humble beginnings as a place of mere functionality, it has become the focal point, the heartbeat of the home. It still has the same basic functionality, to store and prepare food, and the same basic appliances, to keep food cold and to make food hot, but it is now one of the most noticed rooms in the house. It is a place to showcase your personality and to gather socially with family and friends. Design can range from sleek and modern, to shabby chic, or to clean and professional. Whether you are ready to downsize, looking to take advantage of the seller’s market for real estate or just want to enjoy your home more, upgrading the kitchen is your biggest payoff. Top reasons to remodel your kitchen: • Lifestyle: Your current kitchen may have served well when the kids were home or for the previous owner, but as needs change, the layout may no longer work for you. Think of adding an island, re-doing the floorplan, opening up a wall or adding a breakfast bar. • Change: Maybe moving is not an option for you right now, but a change would do you good. You do not have to do a full remodel. You would be amazed how resurfaced cabinets, and a new paint color, backsplash, and flooring can change the mood of the room. • Modernize: Ok, retro is in, but not olive green appliances with orange walls (unless that is your style). With so many advances in technology, updating can make your life much easier. • Worn: If it has been years since your kitchen has seen a paint brush, it may also have cracked tiles, stained or chipped countertops and missing hardware. • Special Needs: Life happens. If a family member is facing health challenges or is disabled, your kitchen may no longer be functional for them. 22 • valleyvitalliving.com
• Dream Kitchen: It is hard for an aspiring gourmet cook to get inspired in an outdated kitchen. • Value: Updating a kitchen is the number one way to add value to your home. If you are thinking of selling, the additional market value will far outweigh the cost of the update. • Available Resources: Home improvement television shows and online videos make it easier than ever to gather ideas and even help you learn to do some of the work yourself. Working with a professional is best. Things may come up you did not expect. But if you are not working with a designer or contractor, there are several things to take into consideration before you start. Does your budget allow a complete remodel or should you stick to a makeover? If you plan to install a commercial range, you may need added bracing to handle the weight. Compare counter height to built-in appliances. Use layers of lighting: under-cabinet, recessed, spotlights. Consider distance from appliances that need to be hooked up to plumbing and electric. Place switches and outlets at convenient places and make sure they are to code. If you are planning to do the work yourself, always check for any permit or inspection needs first.
Over the decades, Rosenblum Realty has seen many changes in our dynamic community. Nonetheless, their team is still committed to following the principles of their Founders: excellent service; honest and timely communication; fair play that will never be compromised. Together they believe, “Sound principles really do bring sound practices -- and also bring good results”!
A Time-Honored Inheritance of Sound Principles By Dave Knowles The Rosenblum family has been in the real estate business in Huntsville-Madison County since 1957 -over 60 years. Carey Rosenblum -- Broker, Owner, Standard
Bearer -- remembers and practices the quintessential business and life principles that were fashioned and followed by his grandfather, Tom, and father, Tommy. While forging their real estate business, they made it clear they would serve with honesty and integrity and always do their best to represent the interest of their clients. Their family story is all Southern and uniquely Huntsville! Tom was a long-time employee at the Lincoln Textile Mill in Huntsville. He gained the respect of many coworkers and after retiring, he launched a second career in real estate. Carey says he never worked with his grandfather, but remembers his pleasant and friendly manner and his keen sense of humor. Tommy’s first career was as a local gospel preacher and he later joined his father in the family business. His sound Biblical principles guided his real estate practices, showing his clients that profits would always take a back seat to service and satisfaction. Carey joined the family business in 1976. His leadership has guided its expansion of traditional services, property management, and the rental of single-family homes. Heavily involved in our community, Carey continues the family legacy of leadership and support in many local organizations: Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce; Huntsville Area Association of Realtors; Habitat for Humanity; and other worthy causes. In 2007, the 4th generation -- Michael, son of Carey and wife, Pamela -- joined the Rosenblum Team and now serves as Associate Broker and Property Manager.
Good Results In 2019, as the 4th generation of the Rosenblum family to work in real estate, I have great appreciation for our family’s legacy. I am humbled, honored, and excited to be leading, learning, and serving with this company! I understand how we have contributed to the exceptional growth of our community through the provision of both business services and the personal assistance and care provided to people in individual and helpful ways. The foresight and planning provided by the patriarchs of my family provides me with laser-sharp guidance on the role of this company and how it should be operated in the 21st century. As a family-owned business with a trustworthy reputation, we have been privileged to have clients reach out to us because of our longevity in business and our commitment to helping clients accomplish their goals through transparent communication. I have also discovered that as we develop new relationships, it is critical that clients feel attention, support, and belonging through our processes. In both our company environment and training, we continue to reiterate these tenets to our agents and we also encourage them to advance to a higher level of service by being open to new thinking, new skills, and new relationships. I daily walk in the shadow of a heritage that has impacted the lives of many people positively! My own involvement in the real estate market has connected me with many different people, unique businesses, and outstanding leaders. It is clear to me today that our company's sound principles -- integrity; honesty; respect -- carries on our family tradition by achieving "good results". Remember, the goal is to make life simpler. Moving to a smaller house may be the best idea for you: less to maintain, easier to clean, lower utility bills. It all sounds good, until you stop to look around at all of the things you have collected through the years. It is amazing how much you can hide in corners, under beds, in trunks and tubs, and in the closets. Now comes the overwhelming part, what to do with all of it. But, if you take it one step at time and work with a mission, it can actually be very easy and freeing. Remember, the goal is to make life simpler. That includes the amount of things you have to take care of and find a home for in your new space. 1. Focus on the positive: These are your memories, your life. Purging may not be easy, but instead of thinking about what you are giving up, think about what you are gaining. 2. Do not get overwhelmed: Remember the elephant? One bite at a time. Focus on one space, room, or thing until it is done. 3. Get your kids and friends involved and share memories: Maybe it is time to pass some of those memories on to them. 4. Make three separate piles or sections: A. Cannot live without – keep. B. Don’t really need this, but it still has some good life in it – donate. C. Had seen better days when you stored it away three years ago – trash. 5. Make it a game: Choose five things you love, to keep, five things someone else will love, to donate, then five things no-one will love, to trash. 24 • valleyvitalliving.com
6. Be brutally honest with yourself: Does it have sentimental value? How often do you use it? Do you have something else that would serve a dual purpose so you really do not need it? 7. Do not get distracted: Set a timer and commit to working until it goes off. For things that will take more time, like papers, set them aside to go through during downtime, like watching TV. 8. Throw a packing party: Invite family and friends to help pack once you have finished sorting, and make it fun. 9. Measure your new space: Make sure the things you plan to keep, especially furniture, will actually fit. 10. Get creative: Storage is crucial in a smaller space. Place an armoire in the kitchen for extra storage. If your current furniture is more decorative, consider changing to pieces with drawers, shelfs, and doors. That old trunk or cedar chest is an amazing space for storing more than just blankets. Dishes, collections, and keepsakes are just a few of the things you can hide away there. Bed risers only increase the height of the bed a few inches, but that may be just enough to fit tubs and boxes with more storage capacity.

Gather No Moss… Or Frozen Pipes As summer comes to an end, RV owners should begin thinking about winterizing. For most people, it is too cold outside to comfortably camp. Storing their vehicle is the best option. But simply parking the RV in a safe spot is not enough to ensure it will be ready to drive again once spring arrives. You may have heard
There are some things to consider when you are ready to winterize your camper or RV: ● Wash and dry the RV thoroughly. ● Keep out pests. Place mouse traps around the RV and rid the motorhome of any leftover crumbs. ● Drain all water in the lines. ● Change the oil at the recommended mile range. ● Cover up! A lot of owners wonder if storing their RV is enough to ensure its safety. The short answer is “No”. Motorhomes require a lot of maintenance throughout the year and proper insurance coverage for your RV can help keep your hobby safe. They go above and beyond, working with destination specialists around the world to ensure every trip is packed full of positive lifelong memories. It’s all about personalized experiences. Destination specialists are “on the ground” travel partners who actually reside and provide travel services in a specific destination. Regardless of how much knowledge, training and experience an advisor has, they can never know everything happening at every destination, every moment, all around the world. What? Why? They are not superhuman? But they ARE connected and privy to the information via these experts.
Relationships with destination partners offer unmatched local expertise, contacts, resources, advice, and solutions. More travelers want to avoid crowds, and experience “living like a local.” Destination specialists can create authentic and memorable adventures at every price point. Where is your next adventure? You want to be ecstatic with every penny spent! Do you want VIP treatment, access to special venues, high-quality, expert guides and a wide range of unique experiences? As travel advisors, we know the extra touches take a vacation from great to amazing! Our clients value service, comfort, reliability and peace of mind. The connections we have established with our destination specialists allow us to offer seamless arrangements and support “on site.” By Marianne Cook Windham Windham Travel & Leisure

A Classic Road Trip Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum One of the nice things about our area is that we are so centrally located. Drive up to two hours in any direction and you will find something unique that makes a day trip worth it. One of those short drives takes you to Leeds, Alabama and the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. The focus of the museum is motorcycle history as a whole, not just a display of vintage bikes. Although their total collection numbers over 1,600 motorcycles, around 900 are normally on display. They boast bikes from 216 manufacturers and 20 different countries. Cars have not been forgotten. Vintage automobiles from several manufacturers are exhibited, but the main focus is on Lotus racecars. For more information and to plan your trip, visit their website at barbermuseum.org.

Nestled in the Heart of Huntsville, convenient to businesses, is a hidden gem. A golf course that offers a full lunch menu, and practice facilities that can be used before or after work. Rich in history and a leader in the golf community, Huntsville Country Club is helping a new generation of families make lifetime memories. Under new ownership, the club has experienced unprecedented growth, from 150 members in 2014 to 442 today, allowing for substantial improvements. New members are struck by the welcoming staff and the friendliness and openness of the golfers. Enjoy a peaceful round on your own, or join one of the regular games each week. Spend time with family and friends at the end of a busy day, enjoy a quick lunch or spend a few minutes on the driving range between meetings. Unlike public courses in the area, members never need to make tee times and enjoy playing at their own pace. With so many ways to enjoy the club, membership isn’t just for golfers. Families enjoy planned events like Easter Brunch, Mother’s Day, 3rd of July Celebration and Santa Brunch. Members can relax while the kids hunt for Easter eggs or sit on Santa’s lap. Summer Friday night dinners are a favorite. Catch up with the girls at the monthly ladies night. Or hang out by the pool and order a burger.
Is it the friendly smile greeting you at the door? Or the daily email with course conditions and what’s for lunch? Maybe it’s the waiter remembering how many olives for your martini? The Huntsville Country Club staff works tirelessly to provide members with the five-star club experience they deserve. Stop by to learn more about membership and experience excellence.

Making the Most of a HOT Market! Huntsville and Madison County have been blessed with tremendous growth! New private sector businesses, coupled with Federal Government relocations and spending, have brought exponential job growth and opportunities for everyone. The housing industry has become very active in support of the many new, potential homeowners arriving. With all these factors producing a “Perfect Storm”, it may be a good time to weigh your options. If your home is paid for or has accumulated a lot of equity, think about unlocking the funds to buy an investment property. Take advantage of low interest rates by leveraging funds and invest in a rental unit for additional income. Or consider that second home -- on the beach or in the mountains -- for family recreation. Maybe it’s time to consider improving your home’s comfort. A new home with a different floorplan or upgraded amenities like a glamour bath or “pro” kitchen in your current home might make a huge difference in enjoying your home.
