Life is all about perspective. How you perceive something is your reality.
Printer Color Xpress Madison, AL
Over time, perspectives change. When I was young, my dad had an adding machine. You remember, the kind with the buttons you had to actually PRESS down then pull the handle. I was fascinated. I added everything I could think of. I couldn’t simply push the buttons, there had to be a purpose. After exhausting everything I could find to add, I had the bright idea of adding the ages of all of my aunts and uncles together. Working my way through my mother’s side, I came to my youngest aunt and realized to my horror that she was 40! And she was the YOUNGEST!! At that point in my life, 40 was ancient. Now... not so much. As a child, you think the “grown-ups” have all of the answers. By the time you are 50, life should be just a matter of imparting that wisdom on the next generation with the words “patience, Grasshopper”. In reality, the 50’s are a time for transition for most of us. Kids are moving out or we are becoming grandparents, retirement is on the horizon, parents need more help or we are blessed with more free time. We are still the same people, just with more knowledge and life experience. If we are lucky, that life experience translates into making better decisions during this transitional part of life. It’s said that age is just a number. I know it seems a bit cliché, but it’s true. We don’t have to have all of the answers. We are still on the journey of finding out where life will take us. True success at any age comes from the impact that we have on the world and the relationships that we have with others and ourselves. It is the story that our life tells. Inside these pages, you’ll find resources, but you’ll also learn the stories of inspiration from some of your neighbors. Know someone who’s story needs to be told? Contact us and tell us about them. 4 • valleyvitalliving.com

Gifts That Keep on Giving
trip can include visiting and taking pictures at all of the places you used to go when you were little: your old house, school, favorite hangouts, ice cream stand, etc. Take pictures and spend the end of the day creating a scrapbook or digital photo album with the day’s memories to cherish for a long time. Give a special charm bracelet and add a new charm each year. Be sure to pick something that is meaningful to you and tell the story of why you chose it each year.
Fall and winter bring many opportunities for gift giving. Whether it’s a winter birthday, the holidays or just something to say “you’re special” you want your grandkids to know how much you love them. But in this world where kids are bombarded with so much, how do you choose something that won’t go into the bottom of the toy box, never to be seen again?
If you enjoy a hobby, purchase the items needed to learn it and give that as your gift. Set a day each month to teach your grandchild and work on projects together. by Susan Voiers
You won’t find these gifts on Amazon or at Bridgestreet, but you may find them in your family’s treasured possessions for years to come. When you pull from your own experiences and values to create a unique gift, the effect it can have on your grandchild is limitless. If you enjoy collecting things, think of the joy of passing on part of your collection. If you have spent time pulling out your collection to show your grandchild, they probably have a sense of awe about it. Imagine how they will feel when they know they’ve been entrusted with such an important task as protecting it. Create a mystery tour field trip and give your grandchild a certificate or booklet of the things you will be doing. The field

You can’t always be there for a loved one…
Always There can. There are vacations and THEN there are adventures. I recently came across a phone app called “Best Road Trip Ever”. It lists over 1800 eateries, historical markers & attractions along with turn by turn directions for the original Route 66. One of my favorite memories from childhood is of my brave parents packing all of the kids into the car and heading out the see the country. The “destination” was to make a loop and end up back home in one piece. I remember going to the beach when I was young, but nothing stands out from those trips, listening to the waves, playing in the water, yes, but nothing remarkable. My memories are full of unexpected finds and adventures from our cross-county trips. Well, that and of my older brother and sister constantly telling my parents to PLEASE take me back into the front seat…no clue why. Stuckey’s along Route 66 was one of our favorite stops, a place where we could acquire anything from a back seat driver’s license to Mexican jumping beans to amazing pecan logs. Those weren’t the only treasures found along the route. One of a kind shops, familyowned motels (each with its own unique neon sign), The Painted Desert & Petrified Forest and many more sites are etched in my memory. We drove part of the route then headed north and looped back home, stopping at every national park along the way. I would love to make that trek again, but, adventure can come closer to home. In the South, we are blessed with so many back roads, each with treasures waiting to be discovered. Go exploring and make new memories with the grandkids or someone special in your life. The Caregiver’s Checklist My father was always larger than life to me. In stature, he was actually shorter than I was. But he was a very private man and he always took care of everything. When he became ill, one of the hardest things my family and I faced was asking questions about things we needed to know, but felt was none of our business. Looking back, while protecting his pride was important, there were many questions we should have asked. For anyone faced with caring for or making decisions for a parent, asking the hard questions is easy to put off. That’s not the only thing that’s hard about the situation, but being prepared can make things easier. Collect information in one place. While we live in a digital world, pen and paper still has its place. A three ring binder enables you to add to sections as needed and leave it for anyone who may need access when you are not there. Caregiving is stressful in the best of circumstances. Planning and having the resources you need at hand can make it easier.
Finding Senior Housing can be complex, but it doesn’t have to be.

Contact names list: numbers and email addresses of family, doctors, agencies, emergency contacts 4. Journal of important notes: include notes from conversations about care or benefits. Record who you spoke with, time & dates. Keep copies of emails. 5. Military Information: branch and dates of service, service records, veterans services contact information 6. Account Numbers: billing dates, addresses, phone numbers, online payment information, passwords for anything relating to the home such as mortgage, cable, electric, credit cards or any other services 7. Personal records: birth and marriage certificates, driver’s license or ID’s, passport 8. Taxes: information to file income tax returns, property tax, financial planner, insurance agent 9. Have You “Hugged” Your Dog Today? Not only can owning a pet bring fun and affection into our lives, they also come with some pretty powerful mental and physical health benefits. Dogs can ease depression, stress, anxiety and loneliness. They also encourage exercise and playfulness. But most importantly, a dog brings unconditional love into your life. Dogs have evolved to become acutely attuned to human’s behavior and emotions. Even more than the words we use, dogs interpret body language, gestures and the tone of voice. When a dog gazes lovingly into your eyes, he is really trying to judge what you are thinking and feeling. And according to a new study, he is giving you a virtual hug. OK, so he is also working out when the next treat or walk is coming, but his mission in life is to figure out how to please you.
Scientists have just begun to document the benefits of the human-animal bond. Among their findings: • Dog owners are less likely to suffer from depression. • People with dogs have lower blood pressure in stressful situations. • Lowered blood pressure in people with hypertension. • Playing with a pet can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine. • Pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels. • Heart attack patients with dogs survive longer than those without. • Pet owners over age 65 make 30 percent fewer visits to their doctors. • Dog owners, on average meet daily exercise requirements • They are a great conversation starter to meet new people. Remember, the next time Fido looks at you with those loving eyes, give him a hug back. It just may do you more good than him.

Finance... Looking out for everything we have worked so hard for.
Social Security: The $64,000 Question
withdrawals, spousal benefit coordination opportunities, the consideration of the surviving spouse, and Social Security’s lifetime income guarantee that exists under current law.²
When should you start taking your social security benefits? That is the $64,000 question. Making the right decision can have a meaningful impact on your financial income in retirement. An illustration of how benefits may differ based on your age when you start taking Social Security may help you choose.

Three ideas to think about when making your decision:
*This example assumes a benefit amount of $1,000 at the full retirement age of 66.
The decision may seem clear-cut: Simply calculate the lifetime value of the early benefit amount versus the lifetime value of the higher benefit, based on some assumed life expectancy. The calculus is a bit more complicated because of the more favorable tax treatment of Social Security income versus IRA
1. Do You Need the Money? Are you retiring before full retirement age by personal choice or because of circumstances, such as declining health or job loss? If you need the income that Social Security is scheduled to provide, however reduced, then taking benefits early may be the only choice for you. 2. Consider the Needs of Your Spouse If your wife is expected to depend on your Social Security income, remember that based on current life expectancy tables, she will likely live longer than you. The survivor benefits she receives may be reduced substantially if you begin taking benefits early—a penalty she may be burdened with for many years to come. (continued on page 13)

Social Security: The $64,000 Question (cont’d) 3. Are You Healthy? The primary risk in retirement is living too long and running out of money. The odds of living a long life in retirement argues for waiting until you reach full retirement age to receive a full benefit for as long as you live. However, if your current health is poor and/or you have a strong family history of premature death, then starting early may make sense for you. By determining your priorities and other income opportunities, you may be able to better decide at what age benefits makes the most sense. by Brad Williams, Brad Williams Financial Services

Health... Taking care of ourselves so we can enjoy the life we deserve.
M Myy HHeeaadd FFeeeellssCrAzy! Any time I feel a sinus headache coming on, I think of my grandmother saying “My head feels crazy”. I have to admit, my thought at that time was “OK, well that just sounds crazy.” But as I grew up and started having sinus problems of my own, I GOT it. Mammaw always had her Vicks inhaler stick handy. I didn’t realize it at the time, but she understood the healing properties of essential oils. That’s probably what made me more open to trying them myself after every prescription and over the counter remedy I tried for sinuses either failed me or had side effects. Tea tree oil worked miracles for me. If you have ever suffered a sinus migraine, you know I don’t use the word “miracle” lightly. Think of essential oils and scented candles and day spas come to mind. But they offer much more than relaxation. They have been used for hundreds of years for their antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitical and insecticidal properties. Properties are so powerful that a large number of prescription and over the counter drugs owe their beginnings to plant oils, although most are now synthetically made. Essential oil therapy, or aromatherapy, uses a plant’s oils to treat disease. Oil is taken from the plant’s flowers, leaves, bark, stalks or roots. Depending on the type, the effect on the body may be relaxing or stimulating. Each plant’s oil is made up of a unique combination of chemicals. The chemical compounds interact with the body and, depending on the oil, can stimulate the immune system, enhance cell growth, eliminate toxins, kill bacteria and viruses and more.
Ways to use essential oils:
Bath – 5-10 drops of oil mixed with salts or emulsifying oil. If not first mixed with salts or an emulsifier (like sesame oil) the essential oil will not disperse through the water, causing possible contact with highly concentrated drops. Seek advice first. Some oils should not be used in the bath.

Steam – 1-5 drops in a pot of hot water. Cover head with a towel and lean over pot. Great for sinuses, headaches and skin. Compress – 10 drops in 4 oz of hot water. Soak a cloth in the liquid and wrap injured area. Good for muscle aches, skin problems, wounds and bruises. Inhaling – 10 drops in hot water or in a diffuser to disperse through the air. Good for headaches, sinus and respiratory system. As with anything natural, seek the advice of an expert before using essential oils for yourself. They can give you advice on what oil or combination of oils may help you and insure you are purchasing the highest grade and most potent oils. By Susan Voiers

MealPrep MadeEasy Eating healthier on the run is a challenge. You could spend one of your treasured days off preparing meals for the week. But somehow, that doesn’t sound very fun. Following a few basics, you can develop a meal prep regime that won’t take away from your down time. • Pick two recipes for breakfast and two for lunch. Prepare 2-3 servings of each and use on alternate days. Choose four snack options to rotate throughout the week. That just leaves preparing a quick dinner each night. Better yet, make extra and enjoy leftovers the next evening to cut cooking time in half. • Balance meals and snacks by including lean protein, fiber and heart healthy fat. It will help maintain focus and energy. • Sneak veggies into breakfast. Add peppers and spinach to eggs or kale into your smoothie • For snacks, choose Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, veggies, nuts or other high protein items. Ideas for Breakfast: • Oats • Greek yogurt • Smoothies • Breakfast burrito • Egg or other sandwich Ideas for Lunch: • Baked chicken, pasta, broccoli • Salmon, brown or black rice, asparagus • Lettuce Fish Tacos – Pan fry or bake fish, place on a lettuce leaf and top with black bean salsa and wrap. Serve with quinoa. • Quinoa & Eggs – Sauté garlic & cooked quinoa, add whisked eggs and scramble. (optional: add chicken or tuna) • Grilled Chicken Salad – Mix romaine lettuce and spinach. Keep chicken, salad mix and other items in separate containers. Vary add-ins on different days: olives, bacon bits, carrots, cauliflower, boiled egg, sunflower seeds, etc. Ideas for Snacks: • Grapes & walnuts • Greek yogurt • Apple & string cheese • Celery & almond butter • Carrots & hummus • Orange & almonds • Boiled eggs & hummus With a little preparation and planning, prepare enough healthy meals for the entire week, effortlessly.

Emotion and Weight Gain The Weight of Change
Midlife can be particularly challenging for women. The physical and psychological changes occurring can cause emotional stress, leading to unwanted weight gain. It can be the most emotionally charged and frustrating time of your life in terms of trying to maintain an ideal body weight. Suppressed emotional issues can surface. Divorce, financial burdens, retirement, empty nesting, a parent’s illness or death, career moves and residential changes often occur. These issues are only made worse by the constant barrage of unhealthy, unrealistically thin images imposed on women by the media
How Your Body Responds
During situations perceived as stressful, your sympathetic nervous system sets in motion a series of physiological responses, according to Hans Selye, MD, who pioneered the concept of emotional stress. Hormones produced by the adrenal cortex, including cortisol and epinephrine, prepare the body for an instant state of readiness in the classic “fight or flight” response. Recent research shows that chronic outpouring of stress hormones may result in undesirable body changes. Researchers believe that chronically elevated cortisol levels can lead to weight gain, especially in the belly.
Several issues can contribute to weight gain. It sometimes can be much deeper than simply not going by the drive thru or buffet. Emotions play an important role in how you feel and see yourself in the mirror. Good nutritional support can be the key to sheading pounds by stabilizing moods and diminishing cravings. by Eric Collier cronusfitness.isagenix.com
Stress Management Techniques
Mind-Body Techniques: Yoga, Pilates, tai chi, meditation, breathing techniques, biofeedback, relaxation tapes, guided imagery or journal writing. Exercise Regularly: A fitness program that includes cardio-respiratory activity and strength training can help you lose body fat, build confidence, alleviate anxiety and depression, and boost self-esteem. Eat Healthy: Eating healthy at regular intervals will keep your blood sugar levels in check and prevent hunger.

Did you know that 89% of the population has never heard of Dry Eye Syndrome? Incredible isn’t it, since it is the most common eye disease that people experience, especially above the age of 40. One out of five Americans has Dry Eye Syndrome, almost 59 million, and the numbers are rising and have nearly doubled in the last 7 years. Here are just some of the lifestyle and physical factors that increase your risk: • Age - 75% of Americans over 65 • Disease - Many diseases have side-effects that greatly increase your risk. • Computer use - We blink about one-third the normal times when on computers, exposing our eyes to air causing dryness. • Environment - Heat, wind, cigarette smoke, pollution and dry climates • Medications - Many have a negative impact on tear and oil secretion. Most people assume that their gritty, red, watery eyes are just a part of life. Does this sound like YOU? People are amazed that there is NOW something that can be done to alleviate this life altering discomfort. There is only one FDA approved way to evaluate and treat the root cause of Evaporative Dry Eye. The new LipiView accurately assesses: 1. Your tear layer 2. Your oil layer that protects your tears 3. The effectiveness of your blink that distributes oil from glands in your eyelids to protect your tear layer Based on the results of the LipiView evaluation, your doctor may then recommend the LipiFlow. This is the only FDA approved treatment that can turn around the root cause of Evaporative Dry Eye and bring eye comfort back to your life. by Dr. Chris Teichmiller Innovative Eyecare

Mind Your B’s! Taking a multi-vitamin and nothing else is great if you are a healthy 20 year old male who maintains a good diet. If that doesn’t describe you, you may want to rethink how far it goes in your system. Multi-vitamins, by their very nature, have a little of everything. They don’t have a concentration of any one vitamin and don’t meet the needs or requirements of most adults. You may need to supplement certain vitamins in a higher dosage. Studies have shown various B vitamins reduce the risk of some cancers, lower stroke risks, increase energy and improve mood and memory. They are water-soluble. Instead of being stored in the body, any unused portion is flushed out. Deficiency symptoms depend on which one you are lacking. They can range from fatigue and confusion, to anemia, a compromised immune system or skin rash.

Vital Life?
Are You Living a
Without your health, living a vital life is all but impossible. After 30 years studying the human body and proper nutritional support, I can personally tell you that almost all disease in America is the result of malnutrition. What if you could avoid most disease, live to your genetic potential without serious illness, extend your life and have a much higher quality of life all without having to be dependent on dangerous drugs? The five fatal diseases, heart disease, cancer, stroke, respiratory disorders and diabetes are mainly avoidable. Arthritis, the number one cause of disability in America, is not contagious. Obesity, fast becoming an epidemic in America, is not inherited. These and many other disorders are simply developed due to a lack of proper nutrition. Baby Boomers are the largest group in the history of America to hit retirement age. Most are taking more than one
prescription drug and visiting the doctor’s office often. The one complaint is a lack of energy. Too many of us are sick and tired of taking prescriptions that only treat the symptoms of disease. Many experts agree that most disease could be avoided if Americans would simply take proper supplementation. The human body must receive 16 vitamins, 74 minerals and trace elements, 12 amino acids and 3 essential fatty acids in order to maintain health. It is estimated that the standard American diet is over 80% deficient of the nutrients necessary for health and vitality. Make sure you are covering all the bases. Get with a recognized, well established company that formulates high quality supplements with a track record of success. Follow their instructions and in as little as 3 weeks you will notice a very real difference. By Roy P. Williams Roy has helped formulate over 40 products, 38 are patented. Recognized as one of the foremost authorities in the field of nutrition, he has been interviewed over 1,000 times on television and radio.Roy owns two health food stores. As we age, our brain shrinks. But what causes it? Is it an inevitable part of the aging process or could it be caused by lifestyle choices? The brain, just like any other muscle, needs exercise and oxygen. As we age, the production of new brain cells slows. But exercise may change that. One study showed, after six months of aerobic training, an increase in brain volume in people ages 60-79, who had previous lived sedentary lives. Cardio activity boosts blood flow to the brain, delivering much needed oxygen. The more you exercise, the more brain derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, your body produces. This hormone is responsible for stimulating the growth of brain cells, especially in the hippocampus, the region responsible for memory.
Mood Lifter Depression slows the ability to process information. Staying fit can also ward off mild depression. Exercising increases the body’s production of serotonin, dopamine and endorphins, the brain chemicals responsible for boosting mood.
Battle Stress
Your Brain on Exercise
Regular exercise also slows the body’s production of cortisol, the stress hormone. Too much cortisol in your system causes forgetfulness and scattered thinking. Stress also depletes brain cells. Exercise helps to regenerate those cells. If you don’t already have an exercise routine, don’t get overwhelmed. Try walking more first. At the store or office, park further away than normal. Every few days, increase the number of steps you are taking. Don’t try to do too much too soon. 30-45 minutes of exercise a day is wonderful, but you may not be able to do that right away, build up to it. Don’t make it just about weight loss. Remember all of the ways your body and mind benefit from exercise. A slight shift in focus can make all the difference in changing your routine.

Home... Tips, ideas and making the most of your space.
Up in Smoke – Tips For Winterizing Your Home Ok, not literally smoke, but are you burning money unnecessarily this winter trying to keep warm? Follow these simple tips to help keep your home toasty without breaking the bank. d Draft guards keep heat from escaping under doorways. Purchase ready-made ones, make your own or use a rolled up towel. d Window insulation film or plastic can keep up to 70% of heat from escaping. d Replacing filters improves your heating unit’s efficiency, lowering heating costs. d Reverse ceiling fans to push warm air down. d Use weather stripping tape or caulk to seal around windows. d Lower your thermostat and put on a sweater. Save up to 1% on energy costs for every degree lowered. d Remove window unit air conditioners to prevent heat from escaping around them. d Add attic insulation to keep heat from rising to the attic. d Lower the temperature on your water heater. Set it to 120 degrees. If you normally have it set to 140, that 20 degree drop can save 6-10% on your energy bill. d Get a HVAC tune-up. If your system is not operating at maximum level, it is using more energy to heat your home. Also have the ductwork checked and cleaned. d Close doors and vents to unused rooms. d Place straw bales around the foundation to insulate. d If you have a two story house, spend more time upstairs, heat rises. d Close the damper on your fireplace when not in use.

Retirement Living — This Isn’t Your Parent’s Generation Does the thought of retirement living bring to mind images of a housing complex filled with elderly people or moving somewhere with round the clock care? Today, adults at or nearing retirement, are demanding a much different experience than their parent’s generation. They are active and cultured. They aren’t ready for the “retirement home” scene. So if retirement living isn’t the same as in the past, what does it look like today? Retirement is not about the end stage of life, but a door to new beginnings and growth. It’s a time to start a new hobby, learn something new, catch up with old friends: all the things there never seemed to be enough time for before. “Baby Boomers” are individualistic, it make sense that for this phase of their lives, there is no cookie cutter answer that is right for everyone. Many are very active and want an experience that encompasses their interest: art, music, theatre, nature, hobbies. Downsizing is one popular option. Moving to a smaller home with easy access to restaurants and recreation but without so many demands for upkeep is appealing. Downsizing doesn’t mean sacrificing the things you want – it means prioritizing them. Having a playroom and bedrooms for the kids is no longer a top priority. Instead focus on the amenities you want the most. Look for a home that fits your
hobbies and interests. If you love cooking find the kitchen of your dreams. Look for that fireplace you’ve always wanted. If entertaining is important, look for a great room or outdoor kitchen. Want a sense of community? Find a neighborhood that offers shared space like a pool, walking trails or sidewalks that you can take advantage of, but still have your own independent lifestyle. By Carey Rosenblum Rosenblum Realty is a 4th generation, family owned Real Estate Company that has served Huntsville for over 50 years. Choose HEALTH My wife continues to remind me to “Drink More”. I know you were thinking, “Drink more what?” WATER of course. I wish I could tell her that water is all I drink but I am working on it. One step at a time. I am a reformed diet soda drinker. I would hate to admit how many I consumed daily, but now I have traded in my cans and bottles for a refillable water bottle that sports my good tasting RO water. Drinking more water is just one step to in our Choose Health plan. We are eating more whole foods, even growing veggies in our aeroponic garden on the back deck. No dirt or other soil additives (read stinky) to deal with and most of the year we can eat right out of the garden. I wish I could grow a pear, apple, blueberry or (insert your favorite fruit) in one of these systems but there is always the farmers market.

Another step to this Choose Health plan is to get more sleep. Changing my eating and drinking habits have helped this as well as taking a couple of 5 minute breaks during the day to breath and clear my head. The last step in our Choose Health plan is to exercise more.
Benefits of drinking more water: • Fluid balance – Regulates temperature and transports nutrients • Calorie control – Feel full and consume fewer calories • Muscle fuel – Muscles that have lost water feel tired and sore • Clearer skin – Toxins in the body can cause the skin to inflame, clogging pores • Kidney function – Kidneys need enough fluids to flush what we don’t need from the body • Productivity boost – Stay refreshed and alert • Sickness fighter – Helps with decongestion and dehydration Are you ready to Choose Health? Highlight the Natural Elegance of Your Wood Floors You finally have the beautiful new hardwood floors you love. Now the challenge is to find the perfect furniture to compliment them. How do you highlight the natural elegance of your new floors while choosing interesting and unique furniture that you also love? Follow these tips for various hues of hardwood to find the perfect pieces to make your new hardwood floors look even more amazing! • A Mind for Metal. Whether its table accents or an entirely stainless steel stool, metal furniture offers a great contrast to hardwood floors. Larger bronze and steel pieces create a modern, industrial feel, while subtle metal accents with distressed detail offer a rustic, vintage-inspired look.
• Lighten up. If you love wood pieces and want to use a wood table and chair set or a couch with a wood frame, opt for a color that’s a few shades lighter than your floor. This provides a subtle contrast and defines the two colors without being too extreme. • A Bit of Matching. Contrast is always welcome, but sometimes a touch of matching can really bring a space together. A great way to use this idea is matching your furniture legs as closely to your floors as possible. If you do this with a darker wood, it’s a good idea to have lighter walls to brighten up your space. • The Golden Rule. If you want one simple rule to follow, here’s an easy one to remember: match delicate furniture with light woods and heavier furniture with dark woods. Light wood floors can be overpowered by heavy pieces of furniture, while dark floors can swallow up more delicate chairs and tables. : R Y M M I J Roocckkiinn tthhee S !! Sttiillll R y a 0 6 0 t 6 t a ey V alllle Va Today, gods of rock ‘n’ roll, like Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, Eric Clapton and Robert Plant are still performing sold out shows. It’s amazing to live in a time when older adults are active, healthier, and more youthful than ever before. Earlier this year, we all came together to wish Jimmy R a Happy 60th Birthday. A gifted guitar player in his own right, Jimmy was spending his birthday performing that night with legendary local band, Black Label. If you’ve never seen Jimmy R perform, you’re definitely missing out on a real treat.
He packs an energy-filled explosion into each and every performance and is just plain fun to watch. It may not be at all what you would expect from an older guitar player, but it makes perfect sense once you know Jimmy and understand his life has been filled with music. Jimmy F. Rusidoff was born in May, 1955, in Slippery Rock, PA. In 1964, when he was just 8 years old, he saw the Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan show. Soon after, he learned a few chords on the guitar; but he didn’t really get serious until his family moved to Arkansas. It was a challenging transition for the pre-teen. Jimmy was a Yankee, and he didn’t play football; he was a very small kid who wore glasses. In a little town in Arkansas, those things added up to a whole lot of nothing in the eyes of the popular kids. Eventually, Jimmy and his fellow outcasts found a passion for music - and it saved their lives. Jimmy experienced his first rock concert in March, 1969, by the legendary Jimi Hendrix. Needless to say, his world was changed forever after that show – he knew he was born to
be a guitar player. Later on, he was influenced by Led Zeppelin, Free, Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher -- all the great guitar players. In the late 1970s to mid-1980s, Jimmy found himself in Memphis, Tennessee playing with the band Southern Creed, one of the most prominent local bands at that time. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Jimmy got a taste of the big time, playing lead guitar for the band Lord Tracy. Lord Tracy toured all over the country, had a record deal, and saw their music videos aired on MTV. In 2000, Jimmy married the love of his life, Christie. Jimmy says Christie doesn’t influence what he likes or what he plays, but she does influence him by being his biggest fan and also his toughest critic. He says Christie being there with him makes him try to do his best each and every time he plays. Calling Huntsville home for some time now, Jimmy has been performing in the Tennessee Valley for over 15 years. You can see him play bass with Black Label and see him play lead guitar for the band Blood River. He also has his own band, The Jimmy R Band, in which he sings and plays guitar for this bluesy-eclectic band. When asked why he still performs, Jimmy says, “I am a musician and performer because I have no choice! I have to do it, I can’t stop. I’m addicted. I’m driven and I am relentless. I will do this until I can no longer do it, then it will be time to die. That is not said morbidly; music is what makes life worthwhile.” Jimmy R may not be as well known as Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page, but to a lot of the musicians here in the valley, he is a legend. Thank you, Jimmy, for bringing your passion and showmanship to the Tennessee Valley. We hope to see you rockin’ for many more years to come! by Stacie Felice, Lead Singer for Dizzytrip valleyvitalliving.com • 27
NEWTRICKS
NEW TRICKS If you have attended any of the theatrical productions around the Valley, chances are you have had the pleasure of watching Marianne Windham portraying one of the characters. Marianne is no stranger to the stage. As a child, she fell in love with dance and received a scholarship to Birmingham-Southern College. But life gets busy and time passes. Marianne realized a while ago that her dance career was mostly behind her. Now in her 50s, she continues to fulfill that love of dance and theatre through teaching and choreography as well as being active in local community theatre productions. Growing up she dreamed of performing the leading role of “Victoria the White Cat’ in the musical production of CATS. But since the show is seldom done in local or regional theatre, it was a “bucket list” item she had given up on realizing. In 2013, a local theatre group made plans to present the show in Huntsville. The cast would be mostly made up of high schoolers and young adults, with a few of the leading roles cast with older adults. The roles in this particular production were very physically demanding and Victoria, the young cat, was the most demanding of all. That part would go to someone very young and very flexible. Marianne was asked to come in and audition. At first she declined, but happily offered to help with the choreography. After some additional coaxing, Marianne reluctantly agreed to audition. The final group was gathered to hear the announcement of who would be playing each part. As each character was called out, Marianne listened for her name, thinking “this is
28 • valleyvitalliving.com
one I might be right for”. But one by one someone else’s name was called. Finally there was only one role left, Victoria. Feeling a little deflated after thinking she had done well keeping up with the teenagers in auditions, Marianne turned to gather her things, give congratulations and hugs and go home… Imagine her elation when she heard the words “And the part of Victoria will be played by Marianne Windham.” Sometimes we think dreams have passed and we settle for what is in front of us. Are we SURE that opportunity has really passed; or have we just convinced ourselves and decided to no longer pursue? As for the moral of this story: You CAN teach an old dog new tricks; and you CAN teach an old cat to dance again. After all, don’t they have nine lives?
Have , ) t s i L ( t e k c Bu l e v a r T l l i W I grew up with a mother who was a natural leader, organizer and hostess. Being artistic, both she and my father appreciated different cultural experiences. After raising their three daughters, they began travelling more together and with their friends. Mom was what we refer to in travel industry as “a pied piper.” For over 25 years, she and Dad led groups of 3040 friends and family on trips all over the world. They got to experience so many wonderful adventures together-and often with us still tagging along as adults. They fulfilled so many lifelong travel dreams, just as many of us hope to do. You know the expression “Bucket List” don’t you? It is a list of all the goals and dreams you want to fulfill and life-experiences you desire to have before you die. Personally, our goal is to visit every continent and most of the natural and manmade wonders of the world before we are 60. This June, we checked off one of our “bucket list” adventures by joining our best friends for an Alaskan cruise from Whittier to Vancouver, BC. With majestic, unspoiled landscapes, awe-inspiring glaciers, diverse wildlife and rich Native culture, it is one of THE most desired travel destinations. Our Alaskan itinerary covered Whittier, Glacier Bay, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. Highlights were Hubbard and Mendenhall Glaciers and waterfall, the musher’s camp and sled dogs, and the humpback whales, sea otters, seals and more bald eagles than we have ever seen in our entire life. In the port of Ketchikan, we spotted 22 bald eagles at one time sitting high atop the trees; with their white heads glowing. The finale of our trip was the beautiful and vibrant city of Vancouver, BC, where we stayed over for a couple of extra days. We agreed that Vancouver is now one of our all-time favorite cities. From start
to finish, this trip with our friends was one of our most memorable. There’s no better way to “chill out” during the summer than taking an Alaskan cruise vacation! By Marianne Windham Windham Travel & Leisure has been helping others check off the items on their bucket list for 10th years. In addition to Windham Travel & Leisure, Marianne and Darin Windham own Windham Entertainment, a regional talent/entertainment agency founded in 2004. Marianne is also Business Development Coordinator for Southern Hospitality Hotel Group and Woody Anderson of Madison; and Darin is a Realtor with the Morley Real Estate Team of Keller Williams
