Being over 50 doesn’t say who we are, just where we are.

And where we are is a very good place. We’ve seen it and we’ve done it. We’ve learned, grown and we know what we want. We’re not narcissistic. We just see things differently. Our years have seasoned us in a different way than our parents.

Just because the calendar says we have hit a particular age doesn’t mean we are like everyone else. We are individuals with our own taste, beliefs and dreams. Some of us are closing in on retirement and need to know our options. Some are retired and want fresh ideas on how to live that lifelong dream of traveling, starting a new hobby or developing a skill or passion into a business. Others are stepping in to raise grandchildren or make decisions for their parents.

We’re too responsible to act like kids. But we’re too young to want to be treated old. A magazine that understands this and brings us the best the Valley has to offer just makes sense. That’s what Valley Vital Living Magazine is all about, sharing tips and information without the normal hype. Grabbing the Rope Find Out Who You REALLY Are.

On board the Mayflower was a young man named John Howland. He traveled to the New World as the man-servant to Governor John Carver.

But something happened on the voyage that showed there were bigger plans for him. During a particularly violent storm, young John was washed overboard. As luck, or providence would have it, he grabbed hold of a rope as he went over and held on, literally, for dear life.

Immersed in the waves, he didn’t let go and was dragged back onboard. John survived that first winter and many more, living to be around 80. He went on to serve the new colony in several important roles, married a fellow passenger and had thousands of descendants.

Family history is more than names and dates on a piece of paper. It is the story of who you are, where you came from and the people who endured incredible odds for you to be here. The story of John Howland is just one of the many I found when I decided to trace my own family.

If you’re ready to begin your journey to find out who you really are, there are several things to keep in mind: • Talk to living relatives. One small memory can lead to amazing discoveries • Visit the library or the county archives.

• Remember, the internet is full of amazing information. But not all if it is correct. Verify anything you find by checking it against records, old family bibles, etc.

• Connect with “cousins” online. They may have already done a lot of the work for you.

But, once again, remember to verify any information. Ancestry.com is a great resource for this.

• Never make assumptions. Just because something makes sense, doesn’t make it correct. Verify, verify, verify.

Family history is a huge jigsaw puzzle that will always have pieces missing, but the more you research, the clearer the picture will become. And occasionally, when you least expect it, you’ll turn over a piece you’ve overlooked and one of those elusive missing pieces will just fall into place. u

• Phone calls are fun any time, but especially meaningful when the kids are participating in a special event: sports, play or church program.

• Videotape yourself reading their favorite story.

If you don’t have a camcorder use a smart phone.

• Have someone take pictures of you doing your favorite activity and send them to the grandkids by mail, email or text.

• Write real letters. Include interesting magazine clippings or cartoons.

• Start the tradition of making and sending a special decoration or card each holiday.

• Mail cookies or special treats. Use a special family recipe if possible.

• If you enjoy sewing, make an heirloom quilt for them.

Use material from their parent’s clothing from when they were young.

• Have old movies of their parents converted to DVD for them.

• Create a scrapbook of photos and momentos from your and their parents childhood.

• Write, videotape or create a slide show of your family history. Include funny stories about yourself and their parents and tales of your ancestors.

HEALTHY EAT SMART! TOMATO AND KALE STEW by Sara Brigadier 1 small white onion, finely diced 2 stalks celery, finely diced 1/3 bulb fennel, finely diced 1 tsp garlic, minced 1 28oz can all-natural diced tomatoes 1 14.5oz can natural tomato sauce Natural chili powder, to taste (start with about 1 T, add to taste)

Natural dried Italian herbs, to taste (start with about 2 T, add to taste) Salt & black pepper, to taste 24 oz natural chicken stock (vegetable stock can be substituted) 1/2 lb raw, chopped kale

Heat a non-stick 4 qt stockpot over medium heat. Add onion, celery, fennel, and garlic, slowly cooking until opaque. If vegetables dry out, add a splash of tap water.

Add chili powder and Italian herbs, stir and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add diced tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir together and simmer for 20 minutes. Add chicken stock and return to a simmer for 15 minutes.

When flavors have melded, add chopped kale.

Continue to simmer until kale is cooked through soft and dark green.

Finish the soup with additional seasonings as desired (add a touch of cayenne at the end for a slight kick).

Top with freshly grated aged parmesan or asiago cheese. Will keep for one week in the refrigerator or freeze leftovers.

Optional: Add blanched asparagus, green beans, carrots or other vegetable for another level of brightness and texture before serving.

Y EATING AVOCADO CHICKEN SALAD by Susan Voiers Cut the unhealthy fat of mayo from this classic favorite. Simply add fresh avocados. The fat in avocados offers many health benefits: Phytosterols and polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols (PFAs) help keep inflammation under control. The unusually high amount of a fatty acid called oleic acid helps form transport molecules for fat that can increase our absorption of fat-soluble nutrients like carotenoids. One cup of fresh avocado can increase absorption of carotenoids as much as 200-400%.

1/2 medium avocado 1 cup cooked chicken breast, chopped Juice of 1/2 lime 1-2 teaspoons course brown mustard 1 clove garlic chopped or 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Salt & pepper to taste 1/2 cup chopped vegetables of choice (zucchini, radishes, carrots, purple cabbage, corn, etc)

HINT: If storing in the refrigerator, add avocado seed to the container with the salad to slow browning and oxidation.

Mash avocado. Add lime juice, brown mustard, garlic or garlic powder, and salt and pepper.

Mix well. Add and mix in the chopped chicken breast and chopped veggies. Serve on your favorite bread, crackers, or vegetables.

Farm Fresh

Supporting Local Farmers While Enjoying Good Food If you love the idea of fresh, local vegetables but don’t have the time or space to grow them yourself, a CSA or “community supported agriculture” may be the answer for you. Due to their simplicity, CSA’s have grown in popularity recently. Members (you) buy a share of a local farmer’s harvest at the beginning of the growing season and receive a box of freshly-harvested vegetables every week until the last harvest--about five to six months out of the year. In many areas organically-grown vegetables and eggs from free-range chickens are also available.

CSA’s are a win-win for farmers and shareholders alike. Farmers are able to pre-sell their harvest, enabling them to focus on growing more and varied produce instead of having to both market themselves and work their farm during their busiest season. It allows them to farm with minimal debt, expand their production, experiment with new, more effective methods and the time to grow their knowledge.

Members not only get more and better produce for their money, they are boosting the local economy. Instead of supporting a faceless corporation or mega-farm that uses harsh chemicals and then harvests too early to ship vegetables across the country, shareholders are supporting a very real family in their very own community. Members often receive more than they can use during a single week allowing them to freeze or preserve the extra produce to eat during off-season.

Many farmers are able to grow a few unique vegetables that aren’t available at conventional grocery stores--just what the doctor ordered to liven up the dinner table and get the kids or grand-kids to actually try a vegetable! A local farmer’s harvest follows the seasons: you’ll finally be able to eat the way nature intended. Members can rest assured that their CSA produce has not been processed in any way; it’s so fresh that you may even find a sprinkling of actual dirt in the bottom of your box.

Many CSA farmers encourage their members to visit the farm, and even get involved in some of the fun. It’s more fun than you’d think to bring the family out to the farm and help your kids and grand-kids connect to the real food that they are eating. It’s a chance to show them that the best food doesn’t come from a box, but from the hard work of an important person: the local farmer.

So you have reached the age when you finally have your life in control.

Maybe your kids have moved out of the house, you have put some money aside for retirement and you are secure. This is often the same time that many think about what if. What if I started that dream business I have always thought about?

There are many considerations before you decide if it is right for you.

WHAT DO I WANT MY BUSINESS TO PROVIDE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY? Common answers are financial freedom and the ability to turn a skill or passion into a meaningful product or service.

Financial freedom may occur in the long run, but often it is a struggle in the near term. The vast majority of new businesses fail in the first two years. Determine what your financial needs are to make sure the business can provide them, especially if you plan to leave your current job.

WHY DO I WANT TO OWN A BUSINESS? Answer this question honestly. Most people are employees, not owners. They assume that all business owners are rich, answer to no one, and can come and go as they please. This could not be further from the truth. The owner has a 24/7 responsibility, is the last person paid, and answers to many people you would not normally think of (lenders, banks, creditors, etc). Are you prepared to make the time and financial commitment it takes to be successful?

Matching your current net pay will not be enough. Many of the taxes and benefits will need to be self-funded, requiring a much larger income for the owner. If you continue to work full time and operate your business in your spare time, be prepared for a much tougher start-up. Your full time job will minimize the time available to spend starting your business.

IS MY IDEA SALEABLE? Just because you have passion about your product or service, doesn’t mean others feel the same way and will pay for it.

Without customers you will end up with an expensive hobby. Validating your idea with others is critical before starting. Talk with people who you trust with true business experience. Listen to suggestions and answer questions honestly.

HOW WILL I FINANCE THE BUSINESS? Businesses require startup capital and working capital to operate. Obtaining it is critical for your success. There are several ways to do this. The most common are self-funding, family and friends, banks, or outside investors. Each has it’s pros and cons. There are trade-offs for each. Make sure which ever path you pick you know what you have risked and/or agreed too.

Deciding to start a business is a major undertaking. The rewards can be great, but the risk is also high. Weigh all pros and cons before you decide. Get impartial professional advice to help you make the right decision for you and your family. n

Could You Afford to Live to 100?

Here’s an interesting statistic: Over the past three decades, the centenarian population in the United States has grown about 66%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a good chance of living to 100 — but the possibility may not be as remote as it once was. In any case, if you do plan to retire in your mid-60s, and you are in good health, you may well have two, or even three, decades ahead of you.

To enjoy this time to the fullest — and to help prevent the possibility of outliving your financial resources — you will need to invest for income and growth throughout your retirement years.

As a retiree, how much income do you need from your investments?

There’s no one “right” percentage for everyone. Furthermore, you shouldn’t have to rely solely on your investment portfolio, because you may have other sources — such as Social Security and potentially your employer-sponsored retirement plan — from which to draw income. Nonetheless, your investments can play a big role in providing you with the income you’ll need during retirement.

Many retirees depend on fixed-rate investments for a good portion of their retirement income — so it’s a real challenge when interest rates are low, as they have been for the past several years.

Consequently,

when you retire, you’ll certainly need to be aware of the interest-rate environment and the income you can expect from these investments.

Longer-term fixed-rate vehicles may be tempting, as they typically offer higher rates than shorter-term ones, but these longer-term investments may have more price fluctuation and inflation risk than shorter-term investments. Ultimately, you’ll likely need a balance between short-, intermediate- and long-term fixed-income investments to provide for a portion of your income in retirement.

While it’s important to invest for income, you can’t ignore the need for growth — because you won’t want to lose purchasing power to inflation. As you know, we’ve experienced quite mild inflation recently. But over time, even a low rate of inflation can seriously erode your purchasing power. To illustrate: If your current monthly costs are $3,000, they will be about $4,000 in 10 years with only a 3% annual inflation rate. And in 25 years at that same rate, your monthly costs will have more than doubled, to about $6,200.

To help protect yourself against inflation risk, you should consider having at least some investments that offer growth potential, rather than only owning fixed-

income vehicles. And some investment vehicles, such as dividend-paying stocks, can offer both growth potential and current income. In fact, some stocks have paid, and even increased, their dividends for many years in a row, giving you not just income, but rising income. (Keep in mind, though, that companies are not obligated to pay dividends, and can reduce or discontinue them at any time.)

To determine the right mix of growth and income vehicles for your individual needs, consult with a financial advisor who is familiar with your retirement plans, your risk tolerance and your family situation.

And it may well be a good idea to plan for a very long retirement.

Exercise Routine Hard to Stick To? Rethink Your Strategy. by Eric Collier, Cronus Fitness 1. Start looking at exercise differently. All movement is exercise. Give yourself more options. Take the dog for a walk, bike to the store and take five-minute stretch breaks. If you don’t count something as exercise unless it happens in the gym, goes on for 40 minutes or requires a shower afterward, you’re missing some of your best opportunities to stay active.

4. Get off the Beaten Path. Have you ever tried water-skiing?

Bowling? Swing dancing? Swimming? Chi kung? How about reversing your power walk route? Exercising at a different time of day? Physical activity isn’t boring, but how you participate in it can be.

5. Use Your Brain. The active mind needs to be engaged.

Dissociation tactics like listening to music, watching TV or playing computer games may help you stick with it. As you become more experienced, associative strategies like focusing on your breath or concentrating on your body movement can help you enjoy exercise more.

2. Think small. This can be hardest for people who expect the most from themselves. Why bother walking around the block when you should be running your usual four miles? Because when you don’t have time to do all four miles, a brisk hike can keep you from feeling that you’ve failed.

3. Set an Agenda. To challenge yourself, set a goal like increasing the speed, frequency or duration of your activity.

Maybe it’s time to train for a marathon--or take a walk up the hill in the backyard without getting winded. (It’s ok to think small for your performance agenda).

6. Get an Accountability Partner. Find a friend, mentor or coach to keep you honest. You can either exercise together or simply check in with him or her to report your progress.

7. Plan to Stay Active. Don’t decide in the moment if you can make the choice beforehand. Plan to park farther from the office and put your walking shoes in the car the night before. Plan to take that new yoga class next week.

8. Face Your Fitness Foes. Does vacation throw your exercising schedule out of whack? Work projects overtake you? Get bored? Fear of success? Fitness foes can be beaten once they’ve been identified. You can change your vacation style, set work limits, or find new challenges.

Organic Farming

Anyone who grew up in a farming community can probably remember when good farm soil was full of nutrients. Tractors replaced the old horse and plow allowing the land to be tilled until it was “smooth as a baby’s bottom”. Today, we know that this exposes the soil to erosion, speeds up decomposition of organic matter, and slowly robs the soil of nutrients and moisture.

In normal farming practices, farmers test their soil to determine what fertilizers are needed. Deficient soil will not produce fertile crops so synthetic fertilizers are added. Each year farmers seek to determine what combination of chemicals may diminish a pesky weed or which pesticides and insecticides to use for insects.

In organic farming, soil is still tested, but deficiencies are corrected differently to eliminate chemical pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers. Soil is enhanced with cover crops, green manure crops, composts, and other natural minerals, improving soil, protecting it from erosion, and conserving nutrients and moisture. Organic farming is a complete science using natural microorganisms, earthworms, crop rotation,

hand-weeding, and specific plants that help suppress weeds, nematodes, and certain other plant diseases. Naturally controlling insects is achieved by using natural predators like ladybugs, green lacewings, hawks, owls, and sheep.

Growing up on a farm that used normal farm practices I was exposed to chemical pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides.

Four of the five people in my family have contracted cancer. I am one of the two who have survived. Organic has become my choice, if it’s yours, check that your foods have the USDA seal “certified organic” and that your supplements are certified and tested by an independent, qualified lab. A freshly-cut apple turns brown, a bicycle fender becomes rusty and a copper penny suddenly turns green. Without the right protection, rust or oxidation sets in quickly. The same thing happens to the cells within our bodies. That’s why so many health articles over the last few years have focused on the importance of antioxidants. But no matter how many antioxidants are ingested, our cells can only benefit from them if the chemical makeup of the cell is in balance.

The human body is a pretty amazing creation, made up of 75-100 trillion living cells; each one performing just the right function in just the right place at just the right time. Each cell is an amazing “metropolis” of bustling activity, a city that never sleeps. Every second of every day, our cells work tirelessly to keep our bodies healthy and strong. Scientist have found that two sets of reactive molecules found naturally in cells are critical for immune function and for cells to reproduce correctly. One set fortifies the immune system and helps the cells communicate with each other. The other protects the cell and activates antioxidants. As we age, our body produces less of these molecules.

Our perfectly designed cells are no longer able to function at optimum level or reproduce correctly and so we age more quickly and diseases develop.

For more than 20 years these molecules, called redox signaling molecules, have been the focus of intense scientific research.

“Redox” a combination of the words “reductant” and “oxidant,” refers to the gain or loss of electrons by certain molecules within the cells. The data from this research has been considered so important that three researchers in 1998, and three different researchers in 2013, were awarded the Noble Prize in Medicine for their work on the value of redox activity within human cells.

Without these signaling molecules, activities within our cells like fuel consumption, waste removal, cellular repair or regeneration (healing) could not take place. In other words, we could not long survive. Redox biochemistry is essential to all life: plant, animal and human.

Although aging slows down the natural production of these molecules within our bodies, the good news is that they can be supplemented. The right balance enables antioxidants to do their job, allows cells to operate as they were designed to and slows down the aging process.

Protect Your Deck!

If not treated and maintained properly, the sun and heat can be your deck’s worst enemy. But don’t worry; deck care is one of the easiest jobs to do yourself.

It needs to be sealed every 2-3 years to protect it from the elements.

1. Cleaning Start with a clean surface so that what you apply soaks into the wood to seal it. Sweep to remove any loose debris. Your cleaning product will run onto the grass and plants. Consider using non-toxic cleaners. TSP (trisodium Phosphate), recommended for years, has recently been found to cause algae growth in lakes, something you don’t want on your deck. Instead, try Simple Green or a special deck cleaner like Bio-Wash Simple Wash. Mix one part cleaner, two parts water. Apply liberally. If you use a pressure washer, remember to stay several inches away from the wood AND your skin. Close contact can cut both you and the wood. Or get excellent results from a garden sprayer and a scrub-brush attached to a pole. Don’t use bleach. Not only will it run off into your yard, it will also stain the wood. If you have a problem with mildew, use Bio-Wash Simple Wash.

2. Choosing Your Stain You can use a clear wood sealer with UV protection for new decks. To add color, sealers with toners can be used on new decks or on decks that haven’t lost most of their color. Semitransparent stains look beautiful on cedar and redwood or decks that have are starting to lose their color and turn grey.

For decks that are completely gray, choose a solid color stain.

3. Staining Wait three days after cleaning or it’s rained to stain. It needs to be as dry as possible. Always test a spot to see if it needs to be stripped before applying a fresh coat of stain. Remember to read and follow the stain manufacturer’s instructions.

With these simple steps, you will be able to enjoy your deck for years to come.

Are you a Water Snob?

My wife calls me a water snob. Eating out, instead of sweet tea, I order water. The water arrives. I sniff it like a fine cabernet, only to be put off by the smell. I might take a quick taste but only with a slice or two of lemon. The food may be great but without good tasting water the overall meal may be a bomb.

Yes, I am a Water Snob, are you? As we all know, water is a key part of life. Bathing, washing, cooking, and drinking all involve the use of water. Most of us depend on our local utility board for safe, clean water. But what is safe and what is clean?

By law the board is required to add chlorine (bleach) to our water as a disinfectant. I don’t typically drink the water from a swimming pool but in most cases, the chlorine level in tap water is as high or higher than pools requires. Local water also contains dissolved solids like calcium, phosphates, nitrates, sodium, potassium and chloride. We can’t see them but they are there. They affect the taste of our water, coffee, tea, pasta and even water cooked vegetables.

Having lived in Europe and Seattle you would think I would be a coffee guy. But nope, my English heritage surfaces as a devout tea lover. It is not uncommon to find a partially consumed cup of the liquid on my desk in the morning. That oily sheen that collects on the surface used to make me wonder “was I drinking that stuff yesterday”? The answer was YES! It is the dissolved minerals bound together with the natural fatty acids in tea and coffee! YUK. So my answer was to remove the chlorine and dissolved solids in my water. Now, I get great tasting water, wonderful tea and they tell me the coffee taste much better. The only down side is that I am a Water Snob. My wife won’t admit it but she is too.

Little River is one of the longest rivers in America that flows almost entirely on the top of a mountain.

One of the most beautiful and historic places in the south, Little River Canyon near Ft Payne, AL is sometimes referred to as the grand canyon of the East. It features the 45 foot Little River Falls, one of the most scenic and accessible waterfalls in the South. Used as a hunting ground by American Indians for thousands of years, some scholars believe that Spanish conquistador Hernando De Soto passed somewhere near the falls in 1540.
