Letter from the President As I reflect on the 2015-16 school year, I can’t help but think back over my years at Valley Christian Schools (VCS). When I began as superintendent in July of 1986, my main objective was to keep our school doors open. Since then, God has miraculously developed VCS into one of the premier K-12 Christian school systems in the country. In fact, VCS was one of only five schools selected nationwide to receive Exemplary Accreditation from the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) during the inaugural year of the exemplary accreditation program. VCS’ A3 initiative (Academic Achievement, Artistic Beauty, and Athletic Distinction) supports every student’s personal Quest for Excellence through the work of our extraordinary Christian teachers on our beautiful and well-equipped campuses. We can all be proud of the bountiful blessings God has bestowed upon Valley Christian Schools! Even with great success, new challenges and opportunities are always on the horizon. As we face the future, it is imperative for us to remain true to our Christ-centered mission as we remain passionate about every student’s success! With enrollment growing this year to the maximum San Jose City approved 2,300 students, five more classrooms were needed. As many of you know, we hoped to expand our Skyway Campus onto the vacant land located by our student parking lot. Conceptual plans featured a new home for our growing Applied Math, Science, and Engineering (AMSE) Institute, a state-of-the-art Human Performance Center for Athletics, and a true Symphonic Hall for our Conservatory of the Arts. With school enrollment at maximum capacity for the fall of 2016, we began to ponder

whether the time was right to begin Phase I of the project. As we studied our financials, we discovered that with enrollment growth, the success of our Extend the Gift Development Department, and your generous commitment to the WARRIOR FUND, resources could be made available to start construction on the proposed AMSE building, but timing was a big question. As our school leadership received counsel from some of you, discussed, and prayed, some important questions surfaced. With the growing cost of Silicon Valley housing, were we putting our priorities in the right place? Should we take a pause from building and focus on the true heart of our school, the teachers and o ur students from financially challenged households? The more we sought God’s wisdom, the more the answer became clear. To place our highest priority on improved teacher compensation and increased Youth with Promise® financial assistance, we decided to build five temporary modular classrooms on the dirt lot and delay the high cost of new building construction in favor of increased teacher compensation. We received building permits for the temporary classrooms toward the end of summer and five classrooms should be installed by spring. A verse that speaks loudly to me is, “For the Scripture says, ‘You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.’ And in another place, ‘Those who work deserve their pay!” (1 Timothy 5:18 NLT).

It is with great joy I am able to report that with your generous WARRIOR FUND support and enrollment our growth, VCS was able to increase our teacher salary by 20% for the 2016-17 school year. And there is more good news—with the success of our Quest Ball along with other donations, we were able to increase our Youth with Promise financial assistance fund by 23%. I pray that at Valley Christian Schools as in God’s Word, people will always be a high priority and our primary focus. The generosity of those who gave to our Extend the Gift WARRIOR FUND was a major contributing factor in our ability to achieve these gains. I would personally like to thank each and every donor contained in the pages herein for your investments of time, talent, and treasure! You are instrumental in allowing us to make this commitment to those in our VCS community who are most in need. Your commitment is so appreciated. YOUTH WITH PROMISE Financial Assistance Programs

Valley Christian’s financial assistance programs play a vital role in ensuring the economic diversity of our student body by allowing qualified candidates from all economic circumstances to enroll and attend our school. In the 2015-2016 fiscal year, Valley Christian awarded nearly $2,400,000 in financial assistance primarily through our Youth with Promise program, as well as other financial assistance programs. Quest On March 12, 2016, we held our second annual Quest Ball Dinner and Auction, benefiting the students and programs at Valley Christian Schools (VCS) through the WARRIOR FUND. On the night of the auction, over 400 parents, board members, faculty, and staff gathered at Villa Ragusa in support of VCS. While guests enjoyed the delicious hors d’oeurves and champagne, they used their mobile devices to bid against each other on a collection of incredible silent auction items such as diamond earrings, beautiful artwork, and opportunities for reserved parking and seating for graduations. The crowd participated in a lively game of Heads or Tails, with the chance to win an incredible Tahoe vacation, and then settled down to an elegant dinner. During the live auction, guests vied for coveted items including exclusive golf trips, amazing sports experiences, and even an adorable Labrador retriever puppy! By the end of the night, guests had pledged over $975,000, with $565,300 given directly to our financial assistance fund, Youth with Promise. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to attend this fabulous event, coming up on Saturday, March 25, 2017. To kick off the Quest Ball festivities, we invite you to attend our wine tasting event at Joseph George Fine Wines. All wines will be offered at a discount, and 20% of the proceeds will be donated to VCS, helping underwrite our auction’s premium wine bar. This year’s wine tasting will be held at Joseph George Fine Wines on Thursday, November 17, 2016. Alumni

The Radonich family and Los Gatos Roof have been long time supporters of VCS. Beginning in the mid-90’s with the formation of Café Valle at the home football games, the family began providing resources to grill and serve the now “famous” tri-tip sandwiches. In addition to this, their generous financial support of the annual VCS Golf Classic carries on to this day, and we are so thankful for their ongoing support. Cameron, class of 1998 and son of Gary and Janet is currently the marketing director for Los Gatos Roofing, the family business, and resides in San Jose with his wife, Katie, their two children. Cameron, as an alum of Valley Christian, has continued to carry the legacy of giving back to support the mission and programs of VCS. Thank you Radonich family for your support of Valley Christian!

The 2015-2016 year was a strong one for the Valley Christian Schools Alumni community ranging from a Homecoming victory in football, with hundreds of alumni on hand, to the VCS Golf Classic, to welcoming 321 new graduates into our alumni family. At the start of the 2015-2016 school year, there were 47 alumni working at VCS as a full-time faculty or staff member. We have teachers teaching in the very classrooms that they were learning in not even a decade ago. There are marketers, coaches, music instructors, trainers, missionaries, and program directors giving back at the place that helped in the formation of the person that they are today. Our alumni engagement and involvement has grown immensely in the last year and, as a result, the foundation is being laid on campus. Students are seeing alumni come back to visit and tell them all about life after high school and how to be better prepared to get into the schools and, eventually, industries that they are aiming for. One of the highlights of the year was the annual College and Career Day. In November, we had 45 alumni return to VCS to share and participate in this exciting new tradition. Current alumni in college came to represent some of the best colleges in the nation and professionals from some of the most respected corporations and professions were on hand to share their stories. Our social media following has grown tenfold as this has become an incredibly important part of our engagement strategy.

Finally, in May, we hosted the 22nd Annual VCS Golf Classic at the beautiful Silver Creek Valley Country Club. We had alumni, alumni parents, current parents, friends of the school, teachers and staff, and even a few student-athletes participate in this great tradition at VCS. The Quest for Excellence was on full display (maybe not in the golf itself) through the outpouring of support for Valley Christian Schools through the WARRIOR FUND.

President’s Business Challenge

The President’s Business Challenge (PBC) promotes and supports student entrepreneurship by providing Valley Christian High School students the opportunity to form a company and learn the requirements necessary to pitch their startup idea to Silicon Valley venture capitalists. Gaining experience in teamwork and collaboration, students learn to innovate, problem solve, and develop creative solutions into a business opportunity.

FACTS ABOUT PRESIDENT’S BUSINESS CHALLENGE: • 59 students enrolled in 2015-16 • 16 teams (two teams from Andrew Hill High School) • 12 speaker series, including three “fireside chats” • 16 mentors (one for each team) • Four rounds of pitches: mock, formal, semi-final, and finalist pitch • 12 judges from prominent roles and influence in the Silicon Valley

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS YEAR: • Over 80 junior high and high school students attended the “Play-a-thon” event, where they had a chance to discover creative new uses for the latest technology.

In the 2016-17 school year, the program will be expanding with the creation of the Business and Entrepreneurship Initiative at the high school and new course offerings, including the following: • Three sections of Intro to Entrepreneurship with the President’s Business Challenge program integrated into the course • Two sections of Intro to Life Calling and Life Calling in the Work Place Bible class with Financial Stewardship integrated into the course • The PBC Incubator Program, which is the advanced course in the President’s Business Challenge, is designed for winning teams who plan to take their business idea to the next level and form the company

• Students took a trip to the SAP Center, where John Tortora, COO of Sharks Sports and Entertainment and current VCS parent, spoke about sports management. • Students Katherine Ho and Ashley Phuong were chosen as semi-finalists in the “Diamond Challenge for High School Entrepreneurs” competition. They were awarded $1,000 in prize money and were invited to attend the final pitch at University of Delaware, where they competed against teams from all over the world.

Conservatory Our Conservatory of the Arts program once again showcased the amazing God-given talents of our students, and people took notice! Here are just some of the amazing accolades the program and our students have received. • Cellist Angeline Kiang was awarded first place in the American Fine Arts Festival Piano and String International Concerto Competition and performed at Carnegie Hall. • Our Open Air Ensemble placed 1st at the Winter Guard International Western Regional Championships and was invited to perform at the Super Bowl 50 festivities.

• Violinist Miles Huang was chosen for the Interlochen World Youth Symphony. • The Conservatory’s Theatre Department was designated as one of the six top theatre programs in the nation by Stage Directions Magazine and earned six nominations for California High School Musical Honors.

• Our nationally acclaimed Jazz Ensemble took home top honors at a multitude of music festivals, including winning Sweepstakes at the Folsom Jazz Festival.

Athletics In 2015-16, Athletic Distinction was on full display highlighted by our amazing female athletes and the growth of our Human Performance Center. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Elena Bruckner continued her reign as the #1 female high school thrower in the nation (in both shot put and discus). Her season highlights included setting State records and being named the Gatorade California Female Track & Field Athlete of the Year and Cal-High Sports Athlete of the Year.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS & ACCOLADES Our women’s volleyball team won their fourth consecutive CCS Championship in 2015, and was crowned State Champions for the second time in three years. Multiple players signed National Letters of Intent to play collegiately at NCAA DI schools, including four for football. HPC

The Human Performance Center (HPC) provides year-round, sports-specific training to maximize athletic performance, and serves as a training ground for over 300 student-athletes each day. The time and effort put into the HPC by coaches and student-athletes alike garnered amazing results in individual athletic accomplishments and team success, especially in our women’s sports.
