he groundhog was wrong – at least for the Oklahoma area. While parts of the north and west have been ravaged by snow and dangerous rains, it’s been quite nice in the Sooner state. But nicer weather can invite a few visitors that no one wants to entertain termites. Swarming of these destructive and pesky little creatures usually occurs in the spring and most often during the morning following a warm rain shower, whereby the soil temperature is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. There are several areas in green country that are in high risk of springtime termite swarms including: Bartlesville, Broken Arrow, Claremore, Jenks, Miami, Muskogee, Okmulgee, Owasso, Ponca City, Sand Springs, Sapulpa and Tulsa. “We are armed and prepared for the early spring weather,” said Sheila Disler or Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care. “Treatments are administered in and around our homes, garden, shrubs and lawns, therefore diminishing the inherent numbers of termites, mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and bedbugs.” Termite colony nest

development is slow in the first few months. But after a few years, the queen termite can actually produce up to 10,000 offspring a year. One queen may live for many years and workers up to two years. The swarmers go to work in the thousands after a mature termite nest is large and well-established on smaller nests. When specialists find a smaller swarmer nest, it’s a sure sign that a larger termite nest is in the vicinity and professional protection is required. Mother Nature’s treats termite colonies with Sentricon bait systems.“We always perform a thorough, free inspection at your residence or business before recommending any treatment, “said Justin Buckmaster of Mother Nature’s. “Each pest problem is different and requires a tailor-made solution. Mother’s Nature’s experienced staff is ready to help our neighbors in Green Country prepare.” According to the United States Department of Agriculture, U.S. residents spend an estimated $5 billion annually to control termites and repair termite damage.

One termite swarm can cause thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to one home or business. “Our biggest investments are our homes and businesses, and it makes sense to proactively guard those investments with professional help,” said Sheila. “And, Mother Nature’s has been serving the green country area since 1979. If you need us, we will be there.”

usiness longevity is a direct reflection of consumer satisfaction. For almost 40 years, Rain Guard of Tulsa, Inc. has been the authority on guttering for both commercial and residential needs. Rain Guard has earned a successful reputation, with over 350,000 customers singing their praise. Owner David Bootenhoff has built his company from the ground up, with a strong foundation built on honesty, integrity, and good, old-fashioned hard work.

David was “just a skinny kid” at 19 years old, when he began working in the guttering industry. He was hired on for labor at $3.50/hour. He worked his way up to sales, and then eventually management. He enjoyed his work in the industry, and was keenly aware of its opportunities and essence. It was sometime later that he decided he needed to have a gutter business of his own. A loan from his father allowed the purchase of a used truck and gutter machine to launch his company out of his Tulsa home

garage in 1982. That same year, he was approached by Gutter Helmet, seeking distribution of their revolutionary rain gutter product. David is, to this day, amazed at how well the product works. He says, “If there was a better product other than Gutter Helmet® to keep gutters clean, I would be selling it.” Rain Guard is an exclusive dealer of Gutter Helmet® in Oklahoma. Rain Guard’s list of quality products has grown to include several styles of guttering, as well as beautiful copper architectural

embellishments. Their success through the years is reflected in the business they receive from referrals and repeat customers, and they are renowned for the professional workmanship they provide. They have been in their current 8000 sq. ft. facility in West Tulsa since 2008. A small company, David says that it’s like a family. He works hard to take care of his staff, and says that he would be nothing without them. He runs the business with the support of his wife, Marlene and their dog, Chief.

His greatest credit for his success, however, goes to his father, Gene. He speaks of his father with deep admiration, and says “he is a great man. We couldn’t have done it without him.” With so many years of experience and happy customers, it is no wonder that Rain Guard has received awards such as Angie’s List Super Service and A grade, and a five-star rating on Home Advisor. Additionally, they have been a member of Homebuilder’s Association since 1982, and a member of the BBB

since 1983, with an A+ rating. Rain Guard’s staying power is a result of David Bootenhoff ’s fortitude and tenacity in building a company that people can trust. This is one of the many reasons they will be around for many more years to come. Call Rain Guard of Tulsa, Inc. today for a free estimate for your seamless gutters with Gutter Helmet®.

on Hansen is a well known northeastern Oklahoma farming and ranching entrepreneur. Already in the farming and cattle business prior to the origination of Thunderbird Berry Farm, he has parlayed the Thunderbird entities to also include cattle ranching, vegetable farming, quality top soils and compost. All aspects of the Thunderbird organization are under the same management team, many of whom are Hansen relatives. Most of the operations are located east of Broken Arrow on Hansen Road (321st E. Ave.) just south of 71st Street (Kenosha). Soil Smart Headquarters is located a quarter mile north of East 71st on 353rd East Avenue (Lone Star Rd.). Hansen’s latest brainchild was in 2016 with the formation of Soil Smart Partners. It is spearheaded by three of his grown grandkids with Don serving as their mentor. The company specializes in specialty soils for individual gardeners and professional contractors. The company has two Divisions: The Materials Division serves contractors with fill dirt and topsoil. The Compost Division serves landscape specialists and gardeners. “Whatever you’re planning to grow, we’ve got the dirt,” says Wes. “We utilize organic wastes, such as leaves and lawn clippings, to recycle and transform into nutrient dense compost.” They also accept leaves, branches and lawn clippings free of charge. All you have to do is deliver them to the location north of East 71st on 353rd East Avenue. Top soil and compost may be purchased in bulk by the truck load, trailer load or pickup load. A potting mix, available in easy-to-handle 25 lb. bags, has been formulated with the essential elements for growing strong, healthy plants and is recommended for raised beds or

container plantings. Orders may also be customized to include additional amendments such as pine bark, gypsum or limestone. “Tell us what you plan to do with your soil,” says Kristen, “and we will gladly recommend ingredients to satisfy your desires and improve quality and production of your plants and crops. Area Azaleas, for example, commonly desire an acidic mixture while tomatoes thrive on a neutral mix.” Soil Smart is contributing top soil and compost to Emerson Elementary School in Tulsa for their Student Urban Gardening Day. “We’re donating materials for the project,” said Kristen, “and have recommended that each student does a planting and grows their chosen variety in a gardening container.” Take the challenge. “Plant part of your garden this spring with a customized product from Soil Smart and the balance of your garden without,” says Wes. “We think you’ll see a marked difference in your plants, because we’ve got the dirt.”

T

he idea of a fountain of youth goes back as far as history records have been kept. It is the talk of myths and legends dating back to at least the days of Alexander the Great. It is no surprise that many people the world over want to stay young and healthy as long as possible while maintaining their youthful energy. The Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon thought he would find this fountain in what is present day Florida, but even he would be shocked by what researchers found in only four known water springs today. Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Garth Nicolson, has been researching the properties of these water sources after hearing many claims these waters held healing benefits when people drank from it. These claims go back centuries, and even wealthy celebrities have been known to visit these unique springs for their special benefits. The question is, could these springs truly be some type of “fountain of youth” or healing water source? This started a journey of discovery unlike anything he could imagine. “What we found was amazing, and we knew this was a life changing discovery,” Nicolson says. What his research uncovered after multiple tests from these sources was shocking. The water samples taken revealed these springs have one specific element to the water not found anywhere else naturally on earth. These waters contain large amounts of hydrogen. According to Nobel Prize winning scientist Albert SzentGyörgyi, hydrogen is considered the most powerful known anti-oxidant on earth. The significance of this discovery revolutionizes everything we know about water and it’s relationship with anti-oxidants. The scientific studies demonstrating the benefits of antioxidants are unprecedented when it comes to the number of benefits. Some of these benefits are the protection of cells in the body from dangerous free radicals that age our cells. These free radicals oxidize our cells internally much the same way metals rust and apples turn brown when exposed to air. These free radicals are found in our environment and the food we eat everyday thus leading to increased aging of the body, with some becoming chronically ill. Drinking hydrogen enriched water, floods the cells of the body with anti-oxidants and protects them from the aging process. These anti-oxidants can also be found in a host of fruits and

vegetables, but water is the most effective delivery system for these anti-oxidants to reach our cells because of the molecular properties of hydrogen in the water. Japanese scientists have also taken note of this discovery, and the people of Japan experience some of the best health and longevity of any country in the world. One company has even pioneered a patented way to have this hydrogen rich anti-oxidant water for home use. The device was also awarded numerous patents world-wide, and has produced such great results it is even used in hospitals across Japan. It is estimated that as many as 20% of households in Japan now also use this exciting technology. Using their innovative process, anyone can now have access to this life changing water and experience the benefits. Many individuals that have struggled for years with the debilitating pain from gout, arthritis, inflammation, diabetes, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, and a host of other issues have reported amazing benefits from drinking this unique water. Some have reported feeling younger and having more energy throughout the day. Others have reported healthier skin and hair after using this special water. After experiencing some of these benefits first hand Brent Nicholson and his wife Rhonda founded a local green country company called IO Pure. They are very passionate about helping others and spreading the word about this unique water “I find a lot of people are worried about what is in their water and whether it is safe to drink or not.” “I also find others are looking for relief from chronic issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, and arthritis,” Brent says. If any of this sounds interesting, looks good, or just feels right, you can call 918-280-8825 for more information.

Tulsa’s newest home and garden show is returning for its third year. Spring Home & Outdoor Living Expo, sponsored by Junk King, is set for a three-day weekend opening at noon on Friday, April 20, 2018 in the River Spirit Expo at Expo Square. The show falls on Earth Day weekend. Many of the exhibitors will be drawing special attention to how their business uses recycled materials in their products and how easy their products are to recycle. Other exhibitors will be showcasing ways to save energy and conserve resources around the house. Junk King is a perfect sponsor as they are America’s greenest junk removal service and strive to send as little as possible to the landfill. Both parking and admission are free again this year. As you enter the show, you can also register for the daily $500 cash drawing. Register early on Friday and have multiple chances to have your name drawn. The first 1,500 families entering the drawing will be given a valuable free gift. Each adult entering the show will also be given a voucher, valued at $15, for free document shredding provided by Green Country Shredding and Recycling in Broken Arrow. This comes at the perfect time

to shred that oldest year of tax records and other “Spring cleaning” discards. You should be able to take in your vehicle, get it diagnosed, get maintenances and trust that you will be treated honestly and fairly with integrity and accuracy. Jim Glover Chevrolet, in Tulsa, is one of the premier auto dealerships in Oklahoma. They have received numerous awards throughout the years based on verified results from comprehensive surveys taken by customers of the dealership. “From our owners down, we recognize that our customers have a lot of choices for their service needs. Our team of service advisors don’t take customers for granted and try our best everyday to walk in our customers shoes - listening carefully to their auto service needs, so that their jobs are done right the first time,” said Kevin Thames, service manager. The Jim Glover Chevrolet service department is not about the car… it’s about you, our customers. We appreciate all of our loyal customers and it has been so nice to continuously see familiar faces that have followed us to our location at I-44 & Arkansas River.” Technology is a vital part of your vehicle so you want to think about the possible severity of your problem when you hear an unusual sound, or are experiencing a problem. Kevin said many vehicles have over 20 computer modules in their systems. There are some problems that can only be accurately diagnosed, repaired and programmed at the dealership. The Glover’s technical staff includes Master Certified Technicians with

he Made in Oklahoma Coalition, founded in the year 2000, is a group of 70+ Oklahoma food manufacturers, growers and producers dedicated to promoting brand awareness for Oklahoma made food and beverage products. After over a decade of raising awareness for made in Oklahoma products, The MIO Coalition recognized that consumers in our state not only want to shop for local products at the grocery store, but they also want to support the Oklahoma restaurants that incorporate locally produced food and beverage items into their menu’s. Thus, in an effort to make this information more readily available to Oklahoma consumers the MIO Restaurant Program was born. The Restaurant of the Month promotion was implemented to provide additional support and recognition to MIO restaurant members that go above and beyond the baseline requirements for membership by offering a robust selection of MIO products to their

o you dream of making your own strawberry jam with berries you picked yourself? This April, pack up the family and head to Huldy’s Farm, a family-owned and operated berry farm in Inola, about 30 minutes east of Tulsa. “We are on a peaceful patch of land easily accessible from Highway 412,” said Owner Gwen Johnson. “If the Good Lord permits, strawberries may be ready starting in mid-April with the warmer weather we’ve been having. We’re scheduled to be at the Tulsa Farmers’ Market on Cherry Street at 15th and Peoria, Saturdays starting April 7. We’re also adding a new booth location in Tulsa on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in the Country Club Plaza parking lot at 51st and Harvard. The farm will open for the season on April 10.” This year, Gwen says the farm has 24,000 strawberry plants, which equals out to a little more than an acre and a half of plants. Each strawberry plant produces about a pound of berries. A new

piece of equipment this year is the Picking Assistant, which will help Gwen’s employees pick even more strawberries to take to the Tulsa markets. Customers can see it in action on Wednesdays and Fridays. The farm is prepared to accommodate visitors, with tables and chairs located near the picking area, folding seats available for a $1 rental fee to use while picking, free bottled water, and portable toilets. Huldy’s welcomes birthday parties and family reunions, and customers are always welcome to bring their own picnic lunches and snacks. After picked, strawberries and blackberries are then gently transferred from the picking buckets to cardboard flats, so patrons arrive home with berries intact. Blueberries are sturdier, so they are packaged in food-safe plastic bags when picked by customers and packaged into plastic pint containers when the staff picks them. Gwen’s daughter, Erin, named the farm. Her grandparents had owned a 1955 Chevy Truck named Huldy – a nickname for a woman prophetess briefly mentioned in the Bible named Huldah who was strong in her faith in God. In

March 2010, with the help of Erin, friends, neighbors, and Gwen’s Sunday School Class, the first patch of blueberries were planted. In the following years, Gwen and her crew added strawberries and blackberries to the farm. During April and May, the farm is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. During June and July, the farm is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. However, if you want to make an aft er-hours appointment, Tuesday through Saturday, Gwen can schedule an appointment for you. Please note that hours can change due to inclement weather and availability of ripe berries, so call or check Huldy’s Farm Facebook page to confirm hours for the day you plan to pick. Strawberries are available for picking starting mid-April; the blueberries should be ready by late May, and the blackberries should be ready by mid-June.

From a beautiful ballroom at the picturesque Mayo Hotel, you can partner with the Child Abuse Network to help children in the Tulsa community who are healing from abuse. Daniel and Whitney Eslicker are co-chairing the CANdlelight Ball this year after attending for the past five years. “I always tell people this is one of my favorite events because it’s intimate but elegant and glamorous,” Whitney said, “It’s a beautiful date night out, supporting a cause that is so vital to our community.” The Child Abuse Network, or CAN, is an organization that “pools resources into a single location, eliminating barriers and obstacles faced by children affected by abuse,” Dan explained. Children come to CAN and receive every evaluation and interview needed all in one place, avoiding the trauma of being shuffled to multiple appointments and places spread out over an extended period of time. “CAN’s services allow a child’s healing process to begin immediately. Children are able to see a light right away in the darkness,” Whitney added. The CANdlelight Ball is a fundraising gala designed to help provide CAN with the funds needed to continue its vital, life-changing work and service to Tulsa’s children. Further, the

Ball helps spread community awareness about CAN’s services. That awareness, in turn, brings in volunteers and funding. The event is open to the public, and various levels of sponsorship are still available. Whether you’ve been involved with CAN in the past, or have just become aware of its work – you can join the cause and celebration of its work. “The Ball is an opportunity for those not familiar to learn more about what CAN does and how they can help support the organization,” Dan said, “For those who are familiar with the organization, it is an opportunity to celebrate the work of CAN and help fund the future.” Attending the CANdlelight Ball is an elegant evening to connect with caring Tulsans, enjoy the buzz and excitement of downtown and The Mayo, and support a deserving cause. “This is an evening all about hope,” Whitney said, “When this event is over, guests leave filled with laughter, hope, and the knowledge their contribution and presence has made a difference.” For more information on the CANdlelight Ball, please call (918) 624-0217, or email events@ childabusenetwork.org. Shine a light for local children affected by abuse and register to attend the CANdlelight Ball today.
