After over a decade of raising awareness for made in Oklahoma products, The MIO Coalition recognized that consumers in our state not only want to shop for local products at the grocery store, but they also want to support the Oklahoma restaurants that incorporate locally produced food and beverage items into their menu’s. Thus, in an effort to make this information more readily available to Oklahoma consumers the MIO Restaurant Program was born. The Restaurant of the Month promotion was implemented to provide additional support and recognition to MIO restaurant members that go above and beyond the baseline requirements for membership by offering a robust selection of MIO products to their patrons. The manner hypnosis is typically shown in movies, television and media is far from reality. It’s often portrayed as somewhere between magic and mysticism, but is actually neither. Hypnotherapy is largely accepted today as effective treatment by progressive hospitals and medical providers. “It has taken centuries for medical hypnosis to regain credibility,” says Penn State psychology professor William Ray. “In the 1950s, reliable measures of hypnotizability were developed, which allowed this research field to gain validity. We’ve seen more than 12,000 articles on hypnosis published since then in medical and psychological journals. Today, there’s general agreement that hypnosis can be an important part of treatment for some conditions, including phobias, addictions and chronic pain.” From an article in the New York Times, “Numerous scientific studies have emerged in recent years showing that the hypnotized mind can exert a real and powerful effect on the body. The new finds are leading major hospital to try hypnosis to relieve pain and speed recovery in a variety of illnesses”. Dr. David Spiegel, a Stanford professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford said, “I see hypnosis as a kind of app you haven’t used on your cellphone,” he said. “It’s got all kinds of capacity that people are just figuring out how to use, but if you haven’t used it, the phone doesn’t do that.” For more information, contact Browning Clinical Hypnotherapy in Tulsa at 918-990-0144 or go to www.browninghypnotherapy.com.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SERVING OKLAHOMA’S BOYS
Tulsa Boys’ Home Centennial Celebration BY MACY GOODNIGHT
O
ne of the greatest treasures in Oklahoma is celebrating 100 years of healing and hope for more than 13,000 Oklahoma boys. The Tulsa Boys’ Home opened its doors on August 28, 1918 to fill the need for housing of young homeless boys living on the streets of downtown Tulsa. The foundation that housed the boys in the beginning was a two-story white house where the Bernsen Community Life Center is now located at 710 S. Boston. Three of the five boys that first lived at the home were found living in cardboard boxes in downtown Tulsa, a city that was growing faster than its social services could handle during the oil boom of the early 1900’s. The Tulsa Boys’ Home moved several times because of the need for growth and expansion and settled into its current location on a 160acre ranch in Sand Springs in 1979. The Tulsa Boys’ Home was the first and remains the largest residential treatment facility serving troubled boys in Oklahoma. Today, the home cares for 64 boys, ranging in age
from 11-18. Gregg Conway proudly leads as Executive Director of The Tulsa Boys’ Home, since 1997. Mr. Conway honors the tradition of the Boys’ Home, and those who came before. “For our 100th anniversary, we celebrate all the efforts of board members, staff, volunteers, and donors who have come before us. That’s whose shoulders we stand on now. That’s the foundation that we’ve built on and continue to build on,” said Mr. Conway. The newest initiative of the Boys’ Home is the Hope Tours, with a goal of community awareness. Hope Tours are scheduled on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. “The Tulsa Boys’ Home has always been one of the crown jewels of Tulsa historically, and our current facility was made possible by the generosity of the Tulsa community,” said Mr. Conway. “We encourage the public to come and see it during one of our tours.” Special tours may also be coordinated in advance for groups that cannot make the scheduled times.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Tulsa Boys’ Home, a Centennial Homecoming Event is scheduled for October 14, 2018, from 1pm-6pm, at their extraordinary facility at 2727 S. 137th West Avenue in Sand Springs. Activities will include a meet and greet with former residents, staff, board members, and volunteers. Visitors will also enjoy tours of the campus, equine demonstrations, food trucks, fun and games, and more! Event chairs, Mieke Epps and Frank Rhoades have dedicated many leadership hours to ensure the Centennial Celebration is a success, as well as a festive and prosperous milestone for The Boys’ Home. Regarding the celebration, Mr. Conway added “We are so grateful for the immense support we receive, and have always received, from the Tulsa community; that’s what makes it all work. This is what we are celebrating.”

Q&A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q: What is a Mutual Fund? I have these at work in my 401k retirement plan. A: A mutual fund is a group of investments that can be purchased to provide diversification to a portfolio. Mutual funds can be composed of stocks and/or bonds. Some mutual funds have both stocks and bonds; these are usually called “balanced funds.” Some mutual funds perform better than others. This is due to fund expenses and market allocation. There are many categories of mutual funds to provide numerous choices for investors. Some popular categories include:
• • • •
Large US Companies (Large Cap) Medium US Companies (Mid Cap) Small US Companies (Small Cap) International
• Developing Economies (Emerging Markets) • Health Care • Technology
The categories are many and some funds combine multiple categories (one example is a mutual fund made up of Linda Rainwater, AAMS ®, 14 years, Financial Advisor small health care companies). At the end of September, the S&P 500 will be changing the companies that make up some of the current sectors. A sector is a grouping of companies that are similar (such as technology companies). This change is causing some mutual fund providers to make changes to align with the new sector definitions. Because there are so many diversifications and fund groups, it is important to know and understand what you own in your 401K. Our office would be happy to make an appointment with you to answer any questions that you might have. Investors should carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of mutual funds before investing. The prospectus and summary prospectus contains this and other information about mutual funds. The prospectus and summary prospectus is available from your financial advisor and should be read carefully before investing. Any information is not a complete summary or statement of all available data necessary for making an investment decision and does not constitute a recommendation. Investing involves risk, investors may incur a profit or loss regardless of the strategy or strategies employed. There is no assurance any of the trends mentioned will continue or forecasts will occur. Any opinions are those of the author and not necessarily those of RJFS or Raymond James. Changing market conditions can create fluctuations in the value of a mutual fund investment. In addition, there are fees and expenses associated with investing in mutual funds that do not usually occur when purchasing individual securities directly. International investing involves special risks, including currency fluctuations, differing financial accounting standards, and possible political and economic volatility. The prices of small company stocks may be subject to more volatility than those of large company stocks. Investing in emerging markets can be riskier than investing in well-established foreign markets. The companies engaged in the communications and technology industries are subject to fierce competition and their products and services may be subject to rapid obsolescence. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the U.S. stock market. Indices are not available for direct investment. Any investor who attempts to mimic the performance of an index would incur fees and expenses which would reduce returns. 401(k) plans are long-term retirement savings vehicles. Withdrawal of pre-tax contributions and/or earnings will be subject to ordinary income tax and, if taken prior to age 59 1/2, may be subject to a 10% federal tax penalty.

THE OLD TIME THRESHING BEE BY LORRIE WARD

istory will come alive in Fairview, Oklahoma on September 28-29. That’s when the Major County Historical Society will host its annual Old Time Threshing Bee, where attendees will get to experience a part of Oklahoma’s farming past that might otherwise have been long forgotten. “We’ve held this event for 33 years,” says Don Vogh, one of the main organizers of the Threshing Bee. “We want people to know our history and where we came from.” The event features living history from several periods in Oklahoma history, but concentrates mainly on farming techniques and machinery from the 1900s to 1930s. One important piece of machinery during

these decades was the threshing machine, which was revolutionary in its time because it mechanically replaced the centuries-old method of manual threshing (or separating grain from the plant by hand). To show the public how these machines work, the Major County Historical Society begins preparing in spring when they plant ten acres of wheat on their 160 acre farm, which they harvest in June, using their vintage International Harvester or John Deere binders. When the wheat is properly bound, they store it in pavilions in anticipation of their annual September Old Time Threshing Bee, where they will show how these amazing threshing machines worked until they were

gradually replaced by the modern day combine after the 1930s. During the Threshing Bee, vintage Red River Threshing Machines will run several times during the day to thresh the stored wheat. After the wheat has been run through these machines, it will be run through a cleaner and bagged for sale. Some of these bags will go to the old flour mill to be ground into flour, while other bags will be offered for sale. Old time threshing machines may be the main attraction at the Threshing Bee, but these machines will be in good company with other vintage pieces from the era— stationary Bessemer engines, old time bailers, belt driven corn shellers, and John Deere and Allis tractors.
There will be demonstrations by blacksmiths, house movers, and anvil shooters, as well as demonstrations of the Oklahoma Land Run and one room schoolhouses. The saw mill on site will run all day both days during the Threshing Bee. On Saturday around noon, “gunfighters” will kick off a parade of vintage tractors and machinery, some of which will be for sale at the event. Organizers of the Old Time Threshing Bee strive to keep everything on display as authentic as possible. They even grow Turkey Red wheat, which is the type of wheat originally brought in by American settlers. Major County Historical Society’s Old Time Threshing Bee is held on their acreage, located a mile east of Fairview on Highway 58A. The Major County Museum , which is dedicated to Major County’s farm community history and highlights the county’s inventors and inventions, is also located on this acreage, is open year round and will welcome visitors of the Old Time
Threshing Bee during the event. “The event is scheduled so that visitors can get a true feel for how farming and farming communities operated in the early 1900s, before the present day type combines took the stage,” says Vogh. “We want to educate everyone about the ways of our past.”

he Rotary Club of Broken Arrow is sponsoring a classic car show in the Rose District, Main Street Broken Arrow on October 6, 2018. This event will bring competition cars as well as specialty classic and military vehicles to fill The Rose District, which USA Today crowned as the small city “Most Charming Main Street” in Oklahoma. Restaurants and unique shops will be open, as well as food trucks. Classic rock music will set the mood for the show and contest. A children’s area offers fun activities, and vendors will add plenty to see. Entry is free to the public and the event is suitable for the entire family. The show begins at 10; vehicle awards will be presented beginning at 3 pm. Proceeds from the event benefit the Broken Arrow Rotary Club’s benevolent projects, including scholarships for BAPS seniors, Happy Hands Education Center, Broken Arrow Neighbors, YMCA and many other deserving causes. Broken Arrow Convention and Visitors Bureau is also a sponsor, along with First National Bank of Broken Arrow, Central Trailer Sales and Stan Evetts’s Country Financial Office.
