Melody Hawkins, practice manager proudly explains some of the newest treatments offered at the Broken Arrow spa located at 510 North Elm Place. One of the newest services offered in the 6,000 square foot oasis is co2 laser resurfacing. The procedure is one of the most effective therapies for reducing fine lines, wrinkles, tightening pores, improving skin texture, remedying sun damage and even improving acne and surgical scars. The co2 procedure offers a short recovery period and results can be often be seen after only a single session. Another new procedure offered at BA Med Spa is co2 vaginal rejuvenation, which is a quick non-surgical laser procedure that not only restores vaginal health, but also treats urinary stress incontinence with a 100% success rate. The procedure can help ease other symptoms such as dryness, vaginal tone, flexibility and even relieve signs of childbirth.

If you’re not convinced the fountain of youth is located at this lavish spa, you may be after hearing the latest in nonsurgical face-lift technology. The treatment is called NovaThreads. NovaThreads uses dissolvable sutures to lift and smooth the brow, jowl, neck and midface. There is minimal discomfort and the results look natural. What You Need to Know About Purchasing a Hearing Aid

You may be experiencing hearing loss if you often complain that others are mumbling, or you have difficulty understanding conversations in a group. Hearing aids can make sounds louder, but cannot change how your ears function. Here’s some helpful information to help guide you to improve your hearing.

BY MARY BRANSFORD

A

re you having trouble hearing? Do you think a hearing aid might help? Most often, hearing loss sneaks up on you. Suddenly one day, you notice that you no longer hear the humming of the refrigerator or the birds’ singing. On average, it takes 10 years for people with hearing loss to finally do something about it. Many people are simply waiting for the hearing problem to go away. Unfortunately, this rarely happens. Your brain center stores sounds and noises for up to three years following the onset of hearing loss, but after about seven years the memory becomes weaker and weaker. Therefore, it is important to have your hearing tested and hearing aids fitted when you find out that you are losing some of your hearing. Additionally, hearing loss is also linked to the risk of falling, likeliness to develop dementia, increased risk of depression, and sufferers are also more likely to be hospitalized. Steve and Miche Dyke, MiracleEar franchise owners, have helped countless people overcome their hearing problems. They opened their first office in Muskogee known as Better Sound Hearing in 1990 and have since grown to 14 offices throughout Oklahoma. In 2015 they became Miracle-Ear.

May 31st is National Hearing Day and reminds us that our hearing is vital, and needs to be protected. The couple has a passion for helping people. Steve was raised in a family of audiologists and is a board certified hearing instrument specialist and Miche is a registered nurse. “Being in the Miracle Ear group allows us to provide our patients with more warranties for loss and damage, provide better pricing, and expand to offer more services. When you need help or service your warranty can be used without charge at any Miracle-Ear store worldwide,” explained Miche. “Another wonderful facet of Miracle-Ear is that if you cannot afford a hearing aid, you will not leave without a hearing aid… the Miracle-Ear Foundation’s Gift of Sound hearing aid program helps children and adults with hearing loss gain access to hearing aids. The program is designed for people who demonstrate a personal inability to financially provide for their hearing health needs. For information about eligibility, visit www.miracleearfoundation.org, or see us in our office.” Miche explains. Their entire staff is licensed in

various capacities which include; a hearing instrument specialist, audiologist, nurses, and even their front office assistants participate in ongoing Miracle-Ear learning modules. Fitting and maintenance of your hearing aids are of utmost importance. Miche says, “our experienced staff uses all the latest technology to test and diagnose your hearing and will take the appropriate amount of time to make sure your fitting is right for your loss and ensure satisfaction.” When you purchase hearing aids from them, ongoing adjustments of your instruments, batteries and cleanings are always available at any of their locations at no charge. “Another thing, we help our patients with is education. We teach you about wax management, makeup, and how hair spray can damage your hearing aids. Also, batteries should be changed every one to two weeks for hearing aids that require batteries. Cleaning should be done every 90 days at our office. Cleanings, for any make or model, at our office are available to no charge

Miche and Steve Dyke are passionate about helping patients hear well.

regardless of where you purchased your hearing aids,” she expressed. Miche and Steve allow you to try your hearing aids before you buy them. “We want to make sure you are going to wear your hearing aids. The price of your hearing aid will start at about $695.00 and go up depending on what technology and user experience you choose.

One outstanding product they feature is the latest directional beam forming technology found in Miracle-Ear GENIUS RIC hearing instruments which allow hearing aid wearers to actually hear better in noise than their normal hearing peers. “The improvement in speech in noise for users of this technology can relate to a 20 – 30% increase in

speech intelligibility,” related Miche. If you find yourself asking those around you, “WHAT” more than normal, it is time to get your hearing checked. If so, contact the staff at Miracle-Ear in Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Owasso, Jenks, Bixby, Bartlesville or Muskogee. They will put their years of experience and caring to work for you.

Guardians of Children BY MACY GOODNIGHT

T

here are guardians among us, fighting a war in the shadows of society’s darkest corners. They are The Demand Project, and their mission is the eradication of sexual exploitation of children. The Demand Project was founded by Jason and Kristin Weis. Their journey began in their peaceful, Colorado home in 2004. One night, their lives were turned upside down, after seeing a horrific story on the evening news about the brutal rape of a small child. As parents themselves, the story struck an emotional chord, and they knew they had to do something to save the lives of the children affected by these crimes. The Weis’s moved to Oklahoma and attended Victory Bible College to obtain the spiritual training they would need to pursue their goals. In 2013, The Demand Project was born. Jason says, “It was our calling to fight to protect children, to put bad guys away, and to restore victims of sex trafficking.” In the 5 years since they started this vital organization, they have become the authority in their field. “Prevention is the pillar of our organization,” said Jason. The Demand Project is also charged with rescue and restoration of victims. “We assist law enforcement and DHS in finding at risk kids,” said Kristin. “We also facilitate resources with other non-profit organizations to get victims shelter,

ost think of acne as only a problem teenagers face, but as many of us know, it’s a condition that also can affect adults. Years ago, the only solution was a supermarket ointment that dried out your skin, but now there’s a surefire way to treat acne regardless of your age. Nicole McGinnis, who owns Reveal Salon and Aesthetics at 8929 South Memorial in Tulsa, is a licensed aesthetician who specializes in the treatment of acne. “I didn’t have acne as a teenager, but when I hit my 20s my face broke out and I wasn’t sure what to do,” says Nicole. Rather than try an over the counter product, she sought the help of a dermatologist, who prescribed medication. “It helped temporarily, but as soon as I quit taking it, the acne was back.” She noticed it not only aff ected her appearance, but her self-confidence as well. Determined to find a better way to remedy the problem, Nicole got her skin-care license and began

Before

studying the best ways to solve the problem so many people face. “It’s really not a one size fits all,” explains Nicole. Each person comes in for a consult and Nicole discusses diet, lifestyle and product choices that may affect the skin. Then, a light chemical peel is done followed by a custom blend of products based on each person’s specific needs. Sessions are generally performed every two weeks and although results can vary, in about three months, most of the acne has vanished. “We then work with each client on a maintenance program that allows them to stay clear for a lifetime.” With summer quickly approaching, it’s important to remember facial acne is not the only area of concern. “People come in to get back and chest acne treated as well,” reminds Nicole. And with graduation coming up, what better present than a gift card to the salon. It’s also a good time for those home from college to get their appointments scheduled before the summer slips away. Although it

may sound like an expensive process, it’s usually more affordable than seeing a doctor or some of the pricey regiments advertised on television. Besides acne treatment, Reveal Salon also offers other skin-care solutions such as facials, brow shaping, lash and brow tint, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, OxyGeneo, micro phototherapy, skin tag treatment, Rezenerate, Peptide infusion with oxygen and even custom blended mineral foundation. For complete details, visit their website at www. acnespecialisttulsa.com Reveal Salon and Aesthetics offers traditional services such as hair and nails, but there is also a barber on site to treat that guy in your life to an old-fashioned shave. Give them a call at 918891-9634 and schedule your appointment today.

The Avenue of Flags

BY MACY GOODNIGHT

M

emorial Day, was originally called Decoration Day, it began as a way to honor those served in the Civil War and to honor those that died fighting for their rights. Today, Memorial Day is a time to honor those who have given their lives in service to our great country. There are many ways to remember the sacrifices of our brave, but the services provided by Floral Haven Funeral Home and Cemetery are extraordinary. One of the most powerful Memorial Day exhibitions in the country begins on the Friday before what is known as The Avenue of Flags. Over 3,000 funeral coffin flags donated by veterans’ families are displayed. Each year, new inductees are honored at a ceremony where the deceased veteran’s family raises their sacred flag. It is an emotional and powerful tribute. The Avenue of Flags will open on Friday, May 25 and the new induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 26 at

10 a.m. The flags will remain on display the entire weekend through Memorial Day. Additionally, Floral Haven takes great pride in hosting a reenactment of the ceremonial Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Visitors may witness this solemn occasion the entire weekend, which will proceed regardless of the weather. For more than 60 years, Floral Haven Funeral Home, Crematory and Cemetery has been a beautiful and serene resting place, and a comfort to families and friends left behind. The grounds offer serene gardens with memorial benches and raised or flat monuments. Private estates are offered and can be customized with landscaping, upright and flat monuments and memorial benches. These private estates are both serene and peaceful with each families needs to honor loved ones. The Rose Chapel Mausoleum serves not only as a beautifully enhanced place to lay loved ones to rest, but also as one of the very first

built in Green Country. Private Mausoleums are also available to meet the needs of families to honor those laid to rest. The funeral home is welcoming and serene. It is available for families to pay tribute to loved ones on the grounds in which they will be laid to rest. A Family Reception Center is also available for families to share memories of loved ones. With so many decisions to be made after the passing of a loved one, Floral Haven’s mission emphasizes the preplanning of funeral arrangements. Director of Sales and Marketing, Chuck Browne advises planning ahead for the inevitable. “We don’t want people to find themselves unprotected and unprepared when they lose someone,” said Browne. “It’s wise to have plans in place, so that on that horrible day no decisions have to be made.” Floral Haven staff works with each family with respect and integrity to exceed expectations. dignity, peace and serenity. Preplanning of funeral arrangements eliminates the worry of final details and requirements at a time when grief and remembrance should be the focus. “These are conversations that need to take place ahead of time with family members,” Browne said. The compassionate and caring staff at Floral Haven is honored to provide these services to the

community. Along with hosting the reverent Memorial Day services to honor our veterans. For more information on Floral Haven’s Memorial Day events, or preplanning arrangements visit www.floralhaven.com, or call (918) 555-7254.

ere Ye, Hear Ye… ‘Tis time to call all subjects near and yon to spend your days with Knights and royalty as The Castle of Muskogee hosts it’s 23rd Annual Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. An event that features the royal quest for knighthood, a full-contact joust, birds of prey exhibitions, and travelling acrobats. Saturdays and Sundays through June 3rd, 10:30 a.m. till 6:00 p.m. - you will enjoy dozens of street performers, local artisans, culinary creators and merchants, as well as entertainers that will appear on any of the 15 stages throughout the Castleton. There is music for the entire family to enjoy…Many of your favorite merry-makers from years past will be there, along with famous and award winning singers and musicians like The Craic, Pictus, Music Gathering and Scotty Fox. Each weekend of the festival marks a new theme as Queen Elizabeth entertains her royal suitors that seek her hand in marriage. Friends and families, neighbors and foes are encouraged to come dressed for the part and have a jolly good time. You can learn more about the events that coordinate with each weekend at www.okcastle.com. Jeff Hiller, founder of the Castle in Muskogee, was a pre-school and primary school teacher with a passion for history. “My family and I began the Renaissance Festival because it is a great way for people

BROKEN ARROW MAY 2018

to learn and experience history. Recently, a person who first came to our Renaissance Festival when he was ten years old approached me. He said that the experience inspired him to become a history teacher! We have had tremendous growth through the years. Much of our cast and shows have been with us for many years and new performers continue to join each year.” Shows, shopping, food, entertainment and themes change annually. “Castleton is a great place to step back in time. If you have been before you will enjoy coming again. New themes provide more ways to have fun exploring history and having a good time,” explained Jeff. More than 135 merchants and artisans will grace the grounds of Castleton. Siren Song Art who creates beautiful stained glass pieces will be residing in the tournament area of the village. In Castle Keepe, masonry artist, Stone Wick, will feature a wonderful collection of statues, furniture and wall décor. Shop the festival for uncommon hand-carved toys, games, drinking chalices made of horns and clothing. The food is delicious and the memories will be merry for guests of every age.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

Iron Star urban bbq Before Oklahoma entered statehood, there’s been a strong connection with Oklahoma and outlaws. The vast territory provided many areas for hideouts and easily accessible towns for bank robberies. Interest is spurred when you hear of a restaurant being named for one of Oklahoma’s most notorious female outlaws, Belle Starr. Iron Star Urban BBQ is in the heart of Oklahoma City, neighboring the Paseo Arts District & Crown Heights, 3700 N. Shartel, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The restaurant gives the retro, western feel with wood floors and brick walls. You could just imagine an outlaw dining in a restaurant just like this. But, the food is not outdated. The restaurant offers a fine dining experience with a smokehouse flavor; however, it also offers comfort food with a twist. They don’t stop there. In keeping with the health food trends, they also offer a gluten free menu. Just a sampling of their main menu, they offer Seaboard Farms Pulled

Pork, an Oklahoma raised pork, which is smoked and hand pulled and also a Black Pepper Crusted Prime Rib (Dinner Only) is served by the ounce (10 oz. minimum) with your choice of two sides with cornbread. They offer a wide variety of sides, including Dutch oven sweet potatoes, corn pudding and braised collard greens. Mama’s Deviled Eggs, with pepper ceviche and fresh scallion is one of their amazing appetizers. Of course, a fine dining experience must be topped off with a tantalizing dessert, of which, Double Chocolate Bread Pudding with a grand marnier glaze is one option. If you’re needing a place of host a special gathering, Iron Star Urban BBQ offers a unique, fine dining experience having their own Chef design a special menu of gourmet influence for you and your guests. We are proud for Iron Star Urban BBQ to be named our May restaurant of the month.

he Made in Oklahoma Coalition, founded in the year 2000, is a group of 70+ Oklahoma food manufacturers, growers and producers dedicated to promoting brand awareness for Oklahoma made food and beverage products. After over a decade of raising awareness for made in Oklahoma products, The MIO Coalition recognized that consumers in our state not only want to shop for local products at the grocery store, but they also want to support the Oklahoma restaurants that incorporate locally produced food and beverage items into their menu’s. Thus, in an effort to make this information more readily available to Oklahoma consumers the MIO Restaurant Program was born. The Restaurant of the Month promotion was implemented to provide additional support and recognition to MIO restaurant members that go above and beyond the baseline requirements for membership by offering a robust selection of MIO products to their

For 4 Straight Years BY AMY BETH DOBBINS

N

ow in its 72nd year, the Will Rogers Stampede (Stampede) is the 3rd longest running event in Rogers County history. That isn’t the only record the rodeo holds, though. For the last four years, the Stampede has also been voted as PRCA’s top rodeo in its category—No. 1 above 600 other small rodeos! As if that isn’t impressive enough, it is the only PRCA rodeo in Oklahoma to receive the national award three times overall, and the only one to get an award for 4 straight years ever in PRCA history! Large crowds continue to attend, and the Rodeo Arena Coop, newly formed has been berthed for the mission of improving the grounds to make the annual event even more accessible and enjoyable. Currently there is new fencing and lighting and improvements, such as a new

parking lot that are slated to continue into the future. On Thursday, May 24, at 6 pm a very special dedication of the grounds will take place, renaming it Stampede Park. Especially significant will be the dedication of the Clem McSpadden Memorial commemorating the 10th anniversary of McSpadden’s death and celebrating his life and contributions. During the ceremony, Tommy Wildcat of the Cherokee Nation will bless the grounds. McSpadden was the grand-nephew of the legendary Will Rogers. He was also a proud citizen and Tribal Councilman of the Cherokee Nation, a WWII veteran and President pro tempore of the Oklahoma Senate. Mention cannot be made of McSpadden’s life however, without the recognition of his incredible contributions to the sport of rodeo.

BROKEN ARROW MAY 2018

He was a nationally recognized rodeo announcer for ABC’s Wide World of Sports, the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) Star Roping and WRS Radio. McSpadden was also the first American rodeo announcer at the Calgary Stampede. In 1986, he was recognized as the PRCA Announcer of the Year. McSpadden; was also named as the Rodeo Man of the Year by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Further he was inducted into multiple halls of fame, including: Rodeo Hall of Fame, Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, Legends of Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and the Legend in the Bull Riding Hall of Fame. In his honor following the dedication ceremony, the Clem McSpadden Tub-Handle Classic Steer Roping will begin at 7 pm. Claremore is going country for an entire week to celebrate! Rodeo week

1 S T PLACE BROOKLYN PICKARD

Hi! My name is Brooklyn and my mom’s name is Sharon! There are a million reasons why I love my mom but I’ll just outline the big ones. She makes me laugh harder than anyone I know without even meaning to, she just has this naturally funny nature; she can always make a bad day better for me just by cracking a few jokes. Another reason I love her, She has the biggest heart. She cares so deeply about everyone in her life and you’ll never hear her say a bad thing about someone else. My last reason I love my mom; She is my absolute best friend. She’s the first person I call when something good or bad happens to me, she always listens and always gives the best advice, even if it’s something I don’t want to hear. I love her to the moon and back!

2 N D PLACE MCKENNA BROWN

My name is McKenna Brown and I am attending college to become a registered nurse. My mom is one of my closest and best friends. We look and act a lot alike. We occasionally get asked if we are sisters. My mom has taught me how to be a lady and shows me how to live for Jesus every day. Her life is an amazing example. Her love, friendship, and support mean the world to me. I love her so much!

3 RD PLACE KATIE BUNCH

My name is Katie Bunch and I am 28 years old. The reason why I love my mom is because I can always come to her when I need it and she still helps me out. She is an amazing mom.
