T
he Jenks Herb & Plant Festival is widely anticipated as the official signal of the start of spring. The fun begins at 8 a.m. and goes ‘til 4 p.m. in the heart of downtown Jenks. Main Street literally turns green from the long line of booths brimming over with hundreds of varieties of herbs, vegetables, (especially tomatoes) flowers, shrubs, trees and all the essentials to get your garden growing. Many new vendors have been added this year as they discovered the Jenks Herb & Plant Festival for the first time via Facebook and jenksgardenclub.com; as a result they are bringing their beautiful and inventive creations to the festival. Need help with what to plant where? The ever helpful Tulsa County Master Gardeners are present to share their extensive knowledge and experience. Come hungry for a delicious pancake and sausage breakfast. The Kiwanians start flipping pancakes at 7 a.m. and go until 10 a.m., just a short block up Main street at First Methodist Church. A variety of festival food vendors are available for hungry shoppers who will be able to enjoy a quiet place to relax amid

the greenery and benches of the beautiful Jenks park at 2nd & “A” streets called “The Jenks Commons.” Children are in for hands-on fun in the First Planting experience booth with the Jenks Fire Truck tours nearby. There’s something for the whole family to enjoy at the Jenks Herb & Plant Festival! Looks like this year’s festival is better than ever and not to be missed. This event is always free. When you come to Jenks, you’re at home!

microbusinesses that will be offering a wide range of home and personal products. Product categories will include gourmet foods, hand-crafted items, health and beauty solutions and much more.
Tulsa Garden Railroad Club
New to the spring show will be the largest indoor display of garden railroad trains in Tulsa history. This 1,500 square-foot operating system will feature a switchyard and a number of constantly running trains operated by club members for your enjoyment. Feel free to take Facebook selfies with the trains and post them for your friends to see.
Green Living
Many of our exhibitors will be drawing special attention to how their business uses recycled materials in their products and how easy their products are to recycle. Other exhibitors will be showcasing ways to save energy and conserve resources around the house. Watch for special green living signage and show guide content to locate these companies when you attend.
Once again, FREE document shredding sponsored by Green Country Shredding will be available Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the south parking lot near the Golden Driller on 21st St. Bring your old files and tax records and watch the shredder eat them up!
Rescue Roundup
Back by popular demand is the Rescue Roundup, one of many show attractions, featuring several animal rescue groups with dogs ready to meet families. Every home needs a pet to love. In some cases, they need another one. Imagine the joy a new wagging tail can add to your home.
American Red Cross Blood Drive
On Friday and Saturday, Tulsa Home Shows is sponsoring a blood drive to help fill a critical shortage of this life-saving fluid. If you’ve never given before or if you’re an experienced donor, follow the link on SpringHomeExpo.com to book your appointment. Early scheduling helps forecast staffing. If you don’t have an appointment, that’s OK. They will make room.
This year’s expo will feature a wide variety of local experts in the areas of building components, remodeling materials and services for your home. Some of these offerings will be seen for the very first time in Tulsa. The show is the perfect size to have a great variety of things to see and yet be easily walked in a twohour period while allowing in-depth exploration of your favorites. Show hours are Friday from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Spring Home & Outdoor Living Expo is produced by locally owned Tulsa Home Shows, which is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau. So, as you are planning your upcoming weekend activities, make sure to pencil in Tulsa’s newest and fastest growing home and garden show, Spring Home & Outdoor Living Expo, and visit SpringHomeExpo.com for updates, schedules, activities and details.

or more than 20 years, the Easter Production at Victory Church has been an annual tradition in the Tulsa area, drawing thousands to see the Easter story portrayed onstage. Victory annually tells the story of Easter through a multimedia, theatrical production and in recent years, there has been a unique script each Easter. Creative Media Director John Daugherty believes this year’s production, entitled “Proof,” is the church’s best yet. “In this day in age, there’s a lot of CGI and explosions in movies and you don’t

have to have a good story. Entertainment is at the grasp of your hands with your smartphone, but the thing that is lacking is the story. This year’s story, meshed with the entertainment value, is the best we’ve ever done.” The production will feature more than 180 actors, as well as another 50 volunteers working behind the scenes. The process of pulling together the performance began back in December. “We have seen it grow every year,” Daugherty said. “We believe it’s more than just a play. I love calling it an experience.”

This year, Victory will offer the community eight opportunities to see the production, —April 17-19 at 7 p.m., April 20 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Easter Sunday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. “We definitely put effort into the art of it, but at the same time everyone has a pretty good understanding that it’s bigger than these four days and these eight shows,” he said. “People are able to interpret it for wherever they’re at in life or wherever they stand in how they view God,” Daugherty said. “What we have realized is we don’t have events. Here’s what our customers have to say about PermaSeal U.S.A. Preserve Your Investment We wanted to write you to express how satisfied we are with your product, service and the crew. We built our house 3 years ago including the cedar deck, as soon as we moved in we stained the deck and it looked great. Unfortunately, it only looked good for about 6 months and we knew we had to do something to protect our investment, we were not too excited about the prospect of having to stain our deck, at least once a year, to maintain it. Thank God for Permaseal, your team came out, cleaned the deck and permanently sealed the deck with the penetrating sealant. Now it looks just like the day we moved in and we do not have to stain it, unless we want

We are so happy to know we have protected our investment for at least 25 years and we have just scheduled your team to come out and permanently seal our drive way as well. We can highly recommend Permaseal to everyone that is looking for a permanent solution, peace of mind. The whole thing was a very pleasurable experience. From the initial visit, where you thoroughly explained the entire process, with no sales pressure. To the polite, punctual and professional crew that came and did the work. Thank you again for helping us preserve our investment.

H rbs for spring pla He la ant ntin ing g. g.

ardening has never been one of my talents. I get really excited, and over zealous in the spring, with a car full of vibrant plants and pretty bags of seeds that I dream will soon grow in my garden perfectly enough for a Southern Living cover story. But then it gets hot, and I either over water or under water, and the bugs take over like it’s a buffet. By October I have tomato plants full of green leaves with a couple of tiny tomatoes that I watch carefully until the birds decide they’re worth eating before I can harvest them. But this year is going to be different. I decided to consult with a professional who knows Oklahoma weather, and the plants that thrive in it. As a chef, all I want are plants that produce food I will cook, flowers that

are edible, and herbs that will make all my dishes look and taste delicious. Is that too much to ask? I talked with Lindsey Fladie and asked her some questions about starting a “chef’s garden” in Oklahoma. Here is what I learned:
S: What is the most important factor to consider when planting a vegetable and herb garden? L: Soil health, sun requirements of plants, and access to water.
S: What are some Oklahoma native plants that you recommend?
L: Prickly pear is a fun one because cactus and succulents are so popular right now. You can eat the pads of the cactus and harvest the fruit. Passion flower vine is great if

you have a trellis. Not only does it produce beautiful flowers, it produces fruit as well.
S: What are some tips for growing tomatoes in Oklahoma?
L: Start with good soil full of nutrients. Also, plant tomatoes deep to establish a good root system.
S: Are there flowers that are good to plant in an edible garden to help with pest control?
L: Borage repels hornworms, and has an edible flower. Marigolds cause pests to become confused because of their strong aroma. Plants that attract beneficial insects include borage, cilantro, dill, fennel and sweet alyssum.
Grilled Steak Skewers with Chimichurri Sauce

Serves 6
Steak and chimichurri is a famous combination in Argentina! Chimichurri is a mixture of herbs, olive oil and aromatics that works perfectly with a grilled steak. This recipe uses steak on skewers to serve as appetizers or over a green salad. Of course, you could also grill the whole steaks to serve as the main course. If there’s any leftover sauce, add some more olive oil and dress a lettuce salad for a blast of great flavor.

S: What are your tips for feeding eding a vegetable and herb garden?
L: Before planting add a granular ular fertilizer to the soil, and after planting fertilize with a liquid every 3-4 weeks. Read the recommended doses on the fertilizer label, so you don’t burn the plants or starve them. Herbs don’t require a lot of feeding but use organic liquids such as Neptunes, fish and seaweed. Fortunately, I don’t have difficulty growing an abundance of herbs. I use them all year in my recipes, and they add a lot of flavor and color to my dishes. 3/4 cup olive oil 1/3 cup sherry wine vinegar 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1 cup chopped Italian parsley 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves 2 tbsp. chopped fresh oregano leaves 3 cloves minced garlic 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 3/4 tsp. Kosher salt 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper 2 pounds beef top sirloin or beef filet 12 wooden skewers, soaked in water
In a food processor, combine all ingredients except steak. Pulse to combine. Alternatively, you can blend the ingredients with a mortar and pestle. Do not blend to a puree. Remove half of the sauce and put in a bowl. Reserve remaining sauce. Cut the steak into 1 1/2” strips and season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a large plastic resealable bag and add the reserved sauce to cover the meat. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, and up to 3 hours. Heat grill or skillet over high heat. Remove meat from bag and shake off excess marinade. Thread the steak strips onto the damp skewers (to prevent them from burning), and grill each strip for about 2 minutes on each side, until medium-rare. Serve with reserved sauce.

Junior Achievement announces
2019 Tulsa Tycoons and centennial celebration BY MARTHA RONGEY
J
unior Achievement of Oklahoma announced the honorees for its fourth Edition of Tulsa Tycoons, A Night of Monopoly fundraiser. The 2019 honorees are: • Lynn Flinn, Rowland GroupWork Readiness Honoree • Pat Piper, Bank of OklahomaFinancial Literacy Honoree • Dana Weber, Webco IndustriesEntrepreneurship Honoree In addition they have selected Dr. Clarence Oliver as the JA Centennial honoree. This year, Junior Achievement of Oklahoma’s largest fundraiser is both a chance to honor local business leaders and celebrate a significant milestone. JA was founded in 1919, so this year’s Tulsa Tycoons event will include commemoration of the organization’s centennial. “Very few organizations make it to 100 years, much less continue to grow and thrive like Junior Achievement has,” said JA of Oklahoma President Shannan Beeler. “We are taking this opportunity to celebrate and honor what’s come before, but also look toward the future as we work to inspire and prepare our young people to succeed in our ever-changing world. We’ve selected companies and Honorary Tycoons this year who
represent each of the three pillars – financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness – upon which JA was built. Tulsa Tycoons, a Night of Monopoly, fourth Edition, includes a mobile auction, live auction, networking, stories of JA impact, and amazing food. In addition, attendees can engage in low-key Monopolythemed activities. The event will be held Thursday, May 2, 2019, from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Cox Business Center in Tulsa. Funds raised from the event and auction will support Junior Achievement programs, which will bring lessons on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness to more than 58,000 students this academic year. Financial literacy prepares students to manage resources effectively through courses on budgeting and planning. Entrepreneurship lessons focus on what it takes to start, manage and grow a business. Work readiness helps ensure students understand the skills they need to successfully enter the workplace. “We look forward to honoring this year’s Tulsa Tycoons because of their commitment to business, education and the Tulsa community,”
said Beeler. “Their leadership in the community should be an inspiration to any student now learning about business and entrepreneurship through Junior Achievement.” Sponsorships and tickets are now available. For more information concerning Tulsa Tycoons, A Night of Monopoly, fourth Edition, please contact Martha Rongey at mrongey@ jaok.org, call (918) 663-2132 or visit www.tulsatycoons.com. Sponsors for the event include: Chairman of the Board – AAON, and Bank of Oklahoma, Mobile Auction Sponsor – US Cellular, Free Valet Parking Sponsor – Tulsa Airports Improvement Trust, Business Magnates – Cherokee Nation Businesses, The Consultants, Ltd., Ernst & Young LLP, H.A. & Mary K. he coming of spring inspires a sense of renewal and vision, and often directly impacts the desire for home improvement projects. What better place to start than with the kitchen? “The kitchen is the heart of the home, said Austin Gullic, owner of Premium Cabinets of Tulsa. Austin is in the business of inspiring his customers and working with them to deliver the kitchen of their dreams. Established in 2004, Premium Cabinets is committed to providing the highest quality in semi-custom cabinetry at the most affordable price. They specialize in new, superior class replacement cabinets for kitchen and baths.

“The majority of my time with a customer is focused on discovering their needs and wishes and helping them design a kitchen that fits both their requirements and their budget,” said Austin. “This often requires out-of-the-box thinking to ensure we give our customers exactly what they want.” Part of this process is discussing the “pains” associated with existing cabinets. “We really dig into what bothers our customers about the cabinets they have - things that agitate them,” Austin said. “People remodel for a reason, whether it’s a restoration job or just needing a change.” A major focus at Premium Cabinets is functionality. Placement in a space can be completely altered if needed to make the most of the square footage. To assist in providing the most comprehensive previews for potential cabinetry, Premium utilizes a 3D computer generated design application and a large screen monitor for optimal screening in full color. “With the click of a button, I can show you exactly what your new kitchen will look like,” said Austin. Here, the ideas and inspirations can be worked through in collaboration to explore functionality, style, color and materials. As budget usually dictates the final design, Austin recommends putting the entire wish list into the plans, and then scale back if necessary. “Let’s build the virtual kitchen of your dreams, and try to get you there,” he said. “Kitchen remodels are more affordable with us. I’m able to give you the highest quality cabinet with all of the bells and whistles at a competitive price.” These savings are made possible with the solid relationships Premium Cabinets has with their suppliers and a network of insured and bonded contractors.
In addition to consultation and catalogs for inspiration, the Tulsa office serves as a showroom of samples and ideas. Current, completed projects can be found on display and provide an up close and personal experience with design concepts. “I have over 100 sample doors of different styles and colors, which can be previewed in 3D to help plan your project,” Austin said. “I want you to see the full-size versions of people’s kitchens built to immerse yourself in the experience.” Once all the elements are in place and final measurements are submitted for the remodel project, the job can be completed relatively quickly. Austin can provide a list of trusted contractors for installation, electric and plumbing connections. Premium Cabinets’ approach emphasizes a flexible package of reliable services and resources to ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction. Spring into action now to create the kitchen of your dreams.
