ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Layoffs: Coping with Fear, Anger and Money BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

As oil and gas prices drop, many Oklahomans fear for their jobs. The anticipation of what’s to come makes fear and anxiety soar. All of us have a need for certainty in our lives. When we are faced with uncertainty in our jobs, it threatens our financial security and our family. It often leaves folks feeling powerless, scared and angry. It’s normal to have those feelings but important to remember that you don’t have to let your circumstances control and define you. While you may not have control of the circumstances, you have control over your own mind. Certainty comes from inside you, not from what has happened to you. Your thoughts, your feelings and your response are all up to you. You can begin to take control by developing a plan for your finances and creating a positive outlook for your future.

Revisit your Budget. Look at what is really a necessity and what you can cut back on. It may require a temporary change in lifestyle and expectations. For example, shelter, food and transportation are necessities. Fine dining, $5,000 mortgages and Porsche payments are not. Be practical and realistic. Apply for Unemployment and Prepare Your Résumé. Begin right away by utilizing your personal and professional networks for new opportunities. Get that résumé up to speed and start sending it out as soon as possible.

Take Control of Your Retirement Assets. Consider a 401k Rollover. While there are positives and negatives to everything, you should consult with a financial professional about what option is best for you. Some people don’t want to leave their assets in the retirement plan of the company they are being dismissed from. However, there may be a couple of strategies to consider before making the final decision. Give us a call! We can help. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. Goodbye, Yellow Teeth! White Smile Cosmetic & Family Dentistry provides three effective teeth whitening options. By Steve White, D.D.S Statistics reveal that we place a high value on our smiles. According to an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry survey, virtually all adults (99.7%) believe that one’s smile is an important social asset, and 96% of adults believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex. Three-quarters (74%) of adults feel an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chance for career success. And when respondents were asked, “What would you like to improve most about your smile?” the most common response was “whiter & brighter teeth.” If you’re not happy with your smile, teeth whitening is an excellent first step. A busy social season filled with graduations, weddings and showers is upon us, and now is the perfect time to achieve the confidence a beautiful smile brings. At White Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we offer three options for achieving sparkly, white teeth. We are also qualified to handle any issues that may arise from whitening treatments, such as tooth sensitivity, which are normally easy to manage.

Zoom Whitening is a chair-side whitening process that lightens the color of your teeth in one visit using a whitening lamp to activate the hydrogen peroxide gel placed on your teeth. Almost anyone can benefit from whitening; however, for some, it may not be as effective as it is for others. We can determine if you are a viable candidate for the procedure. For best results, tooth surfaces need to be cleaned. A checkup and cleaning are recommended if it's been a while since you've had one. For the "Zoom" whitening procedure, we strongly recommend pre-treating the teeth with a prescription strength fluoride, which we will give you, for two weeks prior to the in-office bleaching. We have found that this greatly reduces the amount of sensitivity experienced during and after the treatment. You will notice a dramatic change in the whiteness of your teeth the same day that you complete the in-office procedure. However, you will also be given a set of custom made bleaching trays with some bleaching gel to use at home for 3-5 more days. This further enhances and solidifies the initial results. The trays can be kept and used for touch-ups later on. Whitening results depend on your daily home habits. Smoking, as well as drinking coffee, tea and red wines, will re-stain your teeth quickly. However, most people report not needing to touch up whiten for at least 6 months. Visit www.whitesmilesfortulsa.com for a coupon offer. Another option is custom-fitted home whitening trays. At your first visit, we will take impressions of your teeth. From these impressions, we will make custom-fitted whitening trays. At your second visit, we will give you the whitening trays and a whitening gel kit. At your convenience at home, you will place a thin layer of whitening gel in the whitening trays and place the trays on your teeth. In order to achieve optimum whitening results, we recommend you wear these trays for 30 minutes a day for two weeks. However, if you are experiencing tooth sensitivity

during this process, you may want to wear the trays for less time, or opt to whiten every other day. The third option we offer is a whitening kit. This is a take home “do it yourself” whitening kit. It comes in prefilled, disposable whitening trays. Simply insert the comfortable trays in your mouth and wear for the recommended time. These trays are generally worn from 15 minutes to one hour per day for anywhere from 5 to 10 days. This process offers a lower concentration bleaching gel and a limited time of use, which can limit the amount of bleaching achieved. If your dentist can’t guarantee results due to various factors, there are other options such as bonding and veneering, which also give you the ability to slightly change the shape and alignment of your teeth. White Smile has had a tremendous response to our QDP (Quality Dental Plan) program, a lowcost alternative to expensive dental insurance. The plan could save you thousands on dental treatment and eliminate costly insurance premiums, which puts money back in your pocket.

JJenks Herb & Plant Festival Returns Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 25 in downtown Jenks.

By Mari Migliore

Saturday, April 25 is Herb & Plant Day in Jenks, America. The Jenks Herb & Plant Festival is widely anticipated as the official signal of the start of spring. The fun begins at 8 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m. in the heart of downtown Jenks. Main Street literally turns green from the long line of booths brimming over with hundreds of flats of herbs of every variety, vegetables of all kinds – especially tomatoes – to get your garden started, flowers, shrubs and trees, garden decorations, and all the essentials. You’ll also find vendors selling Oklahoma wine, home décor, jewelry, arts and crafts, birdhouses, bath and body products, and more. This one-day, free event brings thousands of spring shoppers into downtown Jenks each year. Gardening experts will be on hand to answer all of your gardening questions for

the season, and the vendors are always happy to talk with shoppers about their gardens and planting choices. Kiwanis will be flipping pancakes from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. just a short block up the street at First Methodist Church, 415 E. Main St. Several festival food vendors will be available for hungry shoppers, offering festival staples such as burgers, barbecue, funnel cakes, ice cream and fresh lemonade. Children are in for hands-on fun with the arts & crafts area and the First Planting Experience booth. The train chugging around on the tracks and the Jenks fire truck are added thrills for kids. Something the whole family can enjoy, and a first this year, “The Gathering Place” brings an interactive exhibit for all to explore and get a glimpse of what the new super park will be like. The

Shoppers enjoy the variety of plants at last year’s Herb & Plant Festival, hosted each year by the Jenks Garden Club.

2015 festival is shaping up to be better than ever and is not to be missed. The Jenks Herb & Plant Festival is hosted by Jenks Garden Club every year. Admission is free. Membership to the Jenks Garden Club is open to anyone

interested in gardening, novice to master. Dues are $10 per year, and due by the second meeting you attend. Jenks Garden Club meets the last Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at Jenks City Hall. For more info, visit www.jenksgardenclub.com.

Building with Pride

Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns offers variety and top grade work. By Carol Beck-Round Whether you need a storage building, pole barn, loafing shed, metal garage, cabin or other portable building, Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns can meet your needs. In business since 1998 at the same location, the company has earned an excellent reputation. According to owner Carl Parson, “Customers drive from Bristow, Sapulpa, Tulsa and beyond to purchase their portable buildings from us.” Using only top-grade materials on everything they build, the company is located off the north side of Highway 412 at 30355 S. 4230 Rd., where you will find more than 50 displays available. Buildings can be delivered or built on location, but about 90 percent of the businesses’ work is done on location. In the company’s 17-year history, “We’ve never had a complaint about our buildings,” says Parson. “Our business has grown through word-of-mouth. We started with two buildings when we opened, and it just continues to grow each year. We’ve found that if you do everything better than the next guy, you’ll stay busy.” While they do mainly residential work, the company has expanded – again, by referrals – to include portable building projects

at public schools in Claremore, Jay, Catoosa, Inola, Locust Grove and Tulsa, as well as businesses like Arby’s, Pizza Hut and

Cherokee casinos. “We have also constructed portable buildings for the City of Tulsa,” he says. Conventional or Dutch Barn

Extras, such as steel doors, windows, four-foot loft, work bench and a four-foot treated ramp, are available at an additional charge. Sizes begin at 8x8 up to a

16x24 and larger. Pole barns, which range in size from 24x24 to 40x60, include one walk-in door and one 9x8 overhead door. An additional door is available for an extra charge. The company offers a 40-year manufacturer’s warranty on the 29-gauge metal used in the pole barns and loafing sheds, while the insulation comes with a manufacturer’s 10-year warranty. Also included in the base price is a four-inch concrete slab with rebar 18-inch on center in floor and 10-foot sidewalls. “We can build a pole barn, concrete included, within a week,” says Parson. “We can complete a portable building – built on site – in one day.” The company also builds custom carports and RV covers. Although they are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Parson will meet with potential customers at a different time to accommodate their schedules. “They just need to give us a call and we can work it out.” The company also offers rent-to-own options.

Reputation Through the Roof After 47 Years in Business

If you’re in the market for a new metal roof, Lucas Metal Works is highly regarded name in the industry. Metal offers a number of advantages over other roofing materials. By Sheryl Sowell Lucas Metal Work’s Metal Roofing and Metal Buildings products are used every single day in all industries. Over the past 47 years, the company has developed a stellar reputation across Oklahoma and the Midwest, offering the highest quality products and impeccable customer service. What many people may not know, however, is that residential customers can bring this same excellence to their own homes with Lucas metal roofing and metal buildings. Metal roofs have a number of advantages over other types of roofing materials. They not only look sleek and polished, thus increasing a home’s curb appeal, they are also highly energy-efficient and long-lasting. “Our metal roofs are guaranteed to last a long time, much longer than standard roofing materials – we offer a 40-year warranty,” says Tammy Laakso, marketing and sales manager for Lucas Metal Works. “The large selection of options is another advantage. Our 26 gauge metal panels are available in 16 different colors.”

Metal roofs are highly durable, which is critical in the ever-changing weather landscape of Oklahoma, where within a few weeks it’s possible to see snow, ice, sleet, sun, rain, high winds and tornadoes. Lucas Metal Works also serves residential customers with the addition of metal buildings to their properties. “Metal buildings are great for storage space or work space. We have many customers who purchase metal buildings for hobbies and storing cars, airplanes, boats and RVs. Metal buildings are also used as greenhouses,” says Tammy. “The vinyl insulation used on the inside of the metal buildings keeps the noise factor down while being energy efficient. These affordable buildings are a useful and sound investment to add to your property.” Tammy says that in addition to their top-tier products and talented team of professionals, what sets Lucas Metal Works apart is the strong relationship they maintain with their customers. “Lucas has been a trusted, re-

spected name in the industry for almost five decades. We work closely with our customers from start to finish and beyond.” In 1968, Raymond Lucas started up a small custom metal works shop, and it was not long before his ideas outgrew his humble Jerry, Lucas Metal Works employee, hard at work. space. Make Strides Toward a World Free of MS M Walk MS Tulsa builds new connections at new location.

By Christopher Davis “Multiple sclerosis is a disease that destroys connections. Walk MS builds connections,” says Sarah Flowers, development manager at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Oklahoma. On Saturday, May 2, the National MS Society hosts Walk MS at Tulsa Community College’s southeast campus. The event serves as a vehicle for fundraising and community support for those affected by MS. At its core, MS is an immunemediated disease involving the deterioration of nerve fibers. The damaged nerve fibers develop scar tissue (sclerosis), which disrupts communications in the central nervous system and produces a diverse range of symptoms, from numb, tingling or weakened limbs to blurred vision, slurred speech and trembling. In short, MS stops people from moving. In keeping with the theme of building new connections, Walk MS is a call to action: keep moving forward and together we can work to find a cure. “Walk MS is a great event that brings people together,” says Flowers. “For those living with MS, as well as loved ones who support them, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness and meet others who are fighting the disease.”

In previous years, Walk MS was held at Veterans Park. This year, the event has partnered with Tulsa Community College to establish a larger and more convenient site for participants and vendors. “We’re excited to bring Walk MS to TCC this year,” says Flowers. “The campus will allow room for the event to grow.” Last year, Walk MS brought about 900 participants. This year, Flowers expects to break 1,000. In the past, parking was a challenge for participants and vendors alike.

TCC’s southeast campus, located just off Highway 169 and 81st Street, offers an ideal setting for the event. The sprawling campus, which hosts a segment of the Mingo Valley Trail, provides plenty of space for a walking path to be marked for the event. Even better, there will be ample parking for everyone and easy access for friends and family to line up along the path to cheer on the participants. Walk MS will set up its main booths outside the VanTrease PACE auditorium (located on the east side of campus, facing Highway 169). In addition to on-site registration, attendees can

Fitness Fashion Show to Benefit Girls on the Run The fashion event on Saturday, April 11 offers a ladies’ night out, lots of fun and new trends in active apparel.

By Sheryl Sowell Enjoy a women’s night out and view the latest in fitness apparel and shoes while supporting Girls on the Run® at a women’s fashion show set for 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. The show takes place at Fitness Protection Program’s studio at 2605 S. Memorial in Tulsa.

The fashion show is free, and the featured apparel and shoes will be available for purchase after the show, with a portion of profits benefitting Girls on the Run. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase to benefit the nonprofit. Raffle items include month memberships at local fitness facili-

ties, gift cards to businesses such as Pavilion at Utica Square, and items from local artists. Tickets start at $5 each, and price breaks are offered for multiple ticket purchases. Food and drinks will be provided. To raise funds and allow attendees to sample various Tulsa

fitness centers, a Girls on the Run punch card will be available for $30. The card allows the holder to visit six local gyms twice, for a total of 12 visits. All proceeds benefit Girls on the Run, a nonprofit program encouraging preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. Participants in the punch card include Fitness Protection Program, Physiques by Monique, Jazzercise of Tulsa, Zen Body Tulsa, Sculpt, and Studio 7 Tulsa. Tulsa Runner is also participating by providing the apparel, accessories and clothing for the show, as well as discounts on fashion purchases. Featured apparel will be the hottest styles in running and workout shoes, tops, shorts, tights and accessories. Trends for spring 2015 include the latest in breathable fabrics for warm weather. Functionality is becoming increasingly popular with brands, with many offerings including additional pockets and storage. The public is welcome to attend the fashion show event, and no reservations are necessary. Julie Courcier, co-owner of Fitness Protection Program, became a coach for Girls on the Run in the spring of 2014. “When I first started, I thought of it as a running program for young girls. After training and going through a season, I found it was more of a mentorship program to help girls become confident and comfortable with themselves, no matter what they look like or their situation – bonus that there was running, walking, skipping or just plain moving,” says Julie. “I am so

lucky to be involved in this organization – the hugs we get when we first see the girls, high fives during our lesson/workout, and the ‘can’t wait until next times’ at the end are one of the brightest points in my day. The absolute best part is the excitement you see when they finish their very first 5K.” Julie began running about 12 years ago when she was in her mid-30s. She started with a 5K and began doing marathons in 2009. She has completed 15 marathons in 11 states and one in Ireland. In 2013, Julie and business partner Kasey Fulton opened Fitness Protection Program, offering group boot camp-style interval training workouts for both women and men. “We put together 40-minute workouts for our members that focus on different muscle groups and cardio, always changing it up so you don’t get bored. FPP and Girls on the Run have a common thread in that we focus on the empowerment of an individual, building self-confidence while helping build a healthy body.”

Unpredictable Weather Affects Temperature Systems “We strive for quality service,” said Randy, a native of Bixby who grew up in the heating and air conditioning business owned by his father. Aire Serv provides residential and small commercial service, replacements and installations for all brands. “When you call during business hours,” said Debi, “your call will be answered by a person, not a recording or answering service. And if you call after business hours, we strive to get back to you promptly.” “We live by our code of values,” said Jordan, the eldest son. “You’ll find the words respect, integrity, and customer focus in our code. Each family member wants to treat customers as they like to be treated.” Randy added, “And we listen to our customers. We listen with understanding and then we discuss exactly what that job requires. We also

charge by the job, not by the hour. This gives you the opportunity to thoughtfully choose the best solution for your home or business. Understanding is absolutely required by us, and we want our customers to know that we strive to provide quality service and quality products. We do not cut corners to cut costs.” The company makes only agreements they know they are able to keep, and they put forth a genuine effort to maintain total focus on customer needs. “When your heating and air system fails, it’s stressful because it always seems to happen at the most inopportune time,” said Randy. In those situations, they strive to restore the system quickly with courtesy and professionalism. The biggest challenge facing most Oklahoma businesses is the “constant

changing weather conditions” in the Sooner State. “It is tough on heating and cooling systems, and we suggest two inspections a year – spring and fall,” said Randy. “Routine checks and maintenance are an inexpensive way to keep your system working at peak efficiency. They can even extend the life of your systems while reducing utility bills. Our Total Comfort Tune-Up is much less expensive than replacing the entire system.” Today’s HVAC systems are much more complex and sophisticated. “Manufacturers are designing new units to do more and be more efficient,” he added. “We continually stay informed on the latest changes to equipment as well as government regulations.” “Customers are like family,” said Debi. “It’s very rewarding to know that they trust us, often giving us keys

Tulsa New Holland Owner Mike McCrate said, “We were the ninth largest Cub Cadet dealer in North America last year.” Cub Cadet has more than 1,300 dealers across the country, and Tulsa New Holland has been ranked in the top 100 since 2000. When asked how he got into the “tractor business” Mike responded that he managed the parts department of a Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Alva, Oklahoma while in college, and when he graduated college in 1974, he was hired as parts manager at the New Holland company store in Perryton, Texas. Mike worked for New Holland company 15 years at

various locations and in various roles: parts manager, retail sales representative and retail store manager. Mike came to Tulsa in 1986 as store manager at Tulsa New Holland, and he bought the dealership from New Holland in 1989. “We’ve become somewhat of a ‘rare bear’ in the industry, in that we are still family-owned and operated and do all of our business out of one store,” said Mike. Two of his sons are part of the operation, and other employees think of themselves as part of the Tulsa New Holland family. Some have been employed by Mike for 10 to 20 years. He is known as a “down-to-earth guy” who respects and appreciates his employees and the successful business the team has built over the years. The respect is mutual. Kelly Umphrey is general manager

When spring cleaning your garage this year, don’t overlook your garage doors and the operating system. Superior Overhead Door recommends their 10-Point Inspection at six-month intervals to check the condition of doors, springs, rollers and hinges. It also includes lubrication of all components. This is something most of us never think about, but it makes sense to ensure that the system is operating at peak efficiency throughout the year. You’ll appreciate how smoothly and quietly a garage door opens and closes when properly maintained. “A recommended lubricant improves performance and can extend the life of chain and belt systems,” adds Steve.

He also told Kelly that he thought Mr. McCrate could find a place for him at the dealership. Kelly came to Tulsa without a job, and Mike did offer to employ him for six to eight weeks to do odd jobs including sweeping the shop and painting used equipment. At the end of the “trial period,” he was offered full-time employment. He has served the company as parts department manager and salesman, and was promoted to general manager a little over a year ago. Other members of the outstanding Tulsa New Holland management team include Travis McCrate, service manager; John Asmus, parts manager;

We get calls each year from frustrated consumers who have initially ‘saved’ a few bucks on a garage door system only to be sorry when it quickly needs service for a problem, and the individual who did the job is no longer around.” Steve suggests that you always do business with reputable companies, with employees who drive trucks with appropriate company identification and preferably wear clothing with company identification. “Always ask for proof of insurance including workers’ comp and general liability,” Steve says. “If you elect to do business with someone who sub-contracts labor and there is an accident, you

If you ever need to replace a tired or broken garage door spring, Superior Overhead Door recommends their extended-life product that extends spring life from a usual 10,000 cycles (open and close) to 25,000 cycles. You’ll pay a little more for an extended-life spring, but the value is significant when you look at the product’s projected life expectancy. “Any and all garage door springs will eventually fatigue with use,” says Steve. How many times a day is your garage door opened? Do the math. It might be time to initiate some preventive maintenance. Superior Overhead Door uses only industry-leading Liftmaster® garage door openers. They also carry Clopay® Steel Garage Doors. tomer, president and landscaping chairman of The Reserve at Battle Creek said, “The Reserve looks better that it has ever looked in the past, thanks to the Sooner crew. They are very professional

A thick, lush, head-turning landscape this summer begins with a phone call today to SoonerLawn. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. For the past 10 years, SoonerLawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. SoonerLawn’s six-step program begins with an application of preemergent herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns and obtain so-so results, the SoonerLawn professionals take things to the next level by treating lawns with the right formulations for that particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil pH to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases.

Without Surgery

“After having an MRI, I was diagnosed with having a herniated disc. The pain was like a knife jabbing in my buttock and down my legs. My doctor told me that I was facing surgery on my back and to prepare to spend thousands of dollars and be off work for several months. Then I found Dr. Day and heard about the success he was having treating disc problems by using a new procedure called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. So I decided to try it! On a scale of 1-10 my pain was an 8 when I started but after only a few weeks of treatment my pain level dropped to a 0-1. I am very happy with my treatment and am so glad I said ‘No!' to back surgery.”
