Have You Joined the Sisterhood? Twisted Soul Sisters Boutique offers fashion, friendship and fun. By Kristi Roe-Owen When Kelly Corey and friend Marti Coleman founded Twisted Soul Sisters Boutique six years ago, their vision was to offer women a place to shop for unique, fun clothing and accessories with the philosophy of friendship at the core. The store began as trunk shows featuring unique clothing and repurposed old jewelry in the homes of Kelly’s friends, some of whom now work in the boutique. The Twisted Soul Sisters team remains a group of real life friends from Bixby. “We started off as a group of friends having fun,” Kelly empha-

A leather belt might become a one-of-akind leather cuff bracelet; a grandmother’s ring may find new life as a statement necklace. When the trunk shows proved a hit, this sisterhood moved into a smallish space in Persimmon Hollow, the 1880s village replica known for housing a number of dreamy vintage and artisan vendors. Soon after, the store moved again to their first full-sized storefront, eventu(continued on page 22)

Fix Up Your Cabinets for Fall

Angel’s Pet Funeral Home and Crematory provides pet owners with compassion and comfort in laying pets of all sizes to rest.

The Gleam Guard Dust Free Wood Refinishing process will transform your kitchen in as little as a day – with no odor or extra preparation.

In September of 1996, Angel Askins rescued a Bernese Mountain Dog and named her Maggie. As delighted as she was to have this sweet animal as a part of her household, she had no idea the bond she would form with Maggie until the following November when Angel’s father passed away unexpectly. “Maggie was my rock,” Angel recalls, adding that she grieved greatly at Maggie’s death several years later, as the dog had become a source of comfort and strength in her life almost from the moment she entered it. At the time of Maggie’s passing, Angel was working in a traditional funeral home, helping grieving families at the passing of their loved ones. It was then she wondered why the same service couldn’t be provided for pet owners. This planted the seed of an idea in Angel’s (continued on page 22)

Cabinets are the most visible and most used element of your kitchen. While their purpose is functional, they remain a focal point of the home. The kids are getting ready for back-to-school with new supplies and clothes, why not treat your kitchen too? Whether your cabinets are in extremely rough shape, have only a few smudges or are covered in thick grease from Tracy Booth, owner and founder of years of cooking, Gleam Guard Dust Free Wood Gleam Guard Dust Free Wood Refinishing is the quick, clean, Refinishing. odor-free, reasonably-priced and highly effective solution. “We can refinish cabinets that are in really bad shape. We can also clean your cabinets and give them a new, permanent finish,” says owner (continued on page 22)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

How Do You Teach Kids About Money? BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT As a business owner and a parent, I can’t tell you enough how important it is to teach your children about money. Schools are burdened with far too many requirements these days. However, personal finance is a topic that is often overlooked in the curriculum. Children are capable of learning money skills from a very early age. The following are some guidelines of skills you can teach them at different stages. Five and Under Begin by letting your little ones help out with simple chores around the house. They can help pick up toys, carry their plate to the sink, help take care of family pets, and help set the table. Children intrinsically love to “help” at this age, which is a blessing. However, you might consider letting them earn a few cents for doing “extra chores” in order to send the message that work=earning money. I remember that my five year old loved to organize my Tupperware cabinet for “extra money.” Not only did this help develop his problem solving skills, but also gave him a sense of how valuable it was to earn money. Children at the latter part of this stage are also capable of learning to count and recognize different denominations of coins and dollar bills. Six to Ten This is a great stage to continue building the “learn to earn” muscle. Allow your kids lots of opportunities to make extra money by doing extra chores. We always had “family chores” that everyone had to do just because that’s part of being a family and “extra chores” that they could choose to make money to buy things that they wanted. In addition, it’s a great time to teach a child the difference between “a want” and “a need.” Needs are the very basics. Food to eat, clothes to wear, and a roof over their head are needs. The newest Nike shoes and Apple iPhone 6 are wants. Don’t let them get too big for their britches. Help them learn to differentiate between the two. (As a side note….this is a lesson I’ve noticed a lot of adults have difficulty with, as well) Eleven to Seventeen By this developmental stage, there are

multiple skills to be mastered. Teach your child how to write a check, how to balance a check ledger, how to create a budget, and how to prioritize wants and needs. Require them to assist you in paying bills and entering your expenses in Quickbooks. Be a good role model. Help them to look for ways to earn money outside of the household (weeding neighbors flower beds, mowing lawns, walking dogs, working at McDonalds or Snow cone huts, or babysitting). Encourage saving/investing 30% of everything they make. Visit your local bank and open a savings account with them. If you have a financial advisor, encourage them to attend your appointment with you to learn about investing. Allow them to spend money on items they “want” so they understand how it feels to be able to purchase something with money they have earned. Lastly, help them to value helping others and giving 10% of what they earn. You must be an active participant in teaching your children about money. Teaching them to be responsible in their earning, spending and saving will help them become successful adults. Making It Work Dr. Tony Hicks wants to help you get the most out of your health.

By Deanna Rebro Dr. Tony Hicks is not your typical chiropractor. His passion is to teach patients how to get healthy and stay healthy. The Bixby chiropractor firmly believes our current health care system does not work for chronic disease. “Our health care does wonders for infection and trauma,” he explains. Unfortunately, the three leading killers in the U.S.—heart

disease, cancer and diabetes—have tripled in the past 20 years. And they are expected to triple again over the next 20 years. “We need a new system that is not just testing, drugs and surgery,” he says. “Rather than treat a specific symptom with a specific pill, possibly for life, we need to look at how the body is integrated as a whole.” The functional medicine that he practices, in addition to traditional spinal adjustments, addresses this need. His holistic

approach aims to treat the cause of the patient’s pain and not just the symptoms. Dr. Hicks goes about his work by way of a program that he calls the 5 Pillars of Health. The plan focuses on the nervous system, detoxification, nutritious food, exercise and hormones. The voluntary and involuntary nervous systems communicate with brain cells and control mechanisms within the body. Injuries, stress and posture are just three examples of interferences that can cause pain and disease.

south Detoxification involves the removal of toxic substances, primarily carried out by the liver. According to Dr. Hicks, the FDA has approved over 88,000 chemicals to be in the air we breathe. The problem lies in the fact that interaction among these chemicals is not readily known. In time the liver can become overwhelmed and unable to remove the toxins it is designed to do. Essential nutrients are necessary to support human life and health. Dr. Hicks views genetically modified foods as a “science project.” Too often our bodies view this “food” as foreign bodies. The result is inflammation. Exercise is an essential part of physical fitness, the ability to perform aspects of our occupations, sports activities and the things we need and want to do in our everyday lives. But not all exercises produce the positive results we seek. Hormones communicate between organs and tissues to regulate physiological and behavioral activities such as digestion, metabolism, respiration, tissue function, sensory perception, sleep, excretion, lactation, stress, growth and development, movement, reproduction and mood. Foods have hormones that can be detrimental to the body. This includes the formation of excessive cortisol that is known to produce body fat. Dr. Hicks believes good, even life-changing, health can be achieved by the body working in balance. A defining moment in his life occurred when his parents brought him

Page 7

to a chiropractor. The young daredevil had a long history of broken bones, concussions and numerous other injuries from skateboarding, dirt biking and riding motorcycles. For days at a time he would lie in a dark room, unable to tolerate light or sound or function in a normal way. Out of desperation, his parents scheduled an appointment with a local chiropractor. In a short time he felt better, and his headaches were gone! Thus began his quest for learning more about anatomy, physiology and how to keep all the parts working together in harmony. His passion to learn and share has only increased after 20 years of practice. He keeps up with pertinent studies and regularly attends chiropractic seminars. “The best doctor I can be is to teach people how to be healthy,” he says. Dr. Hicks was awarded the designation of a Top 10 Doctor through his patient ratings. Dr. Hicks offers a free class, “Stress, Hormones and Health,” twice each month. Pre-registration is required. Call today to register or to schedule a free consultation or appointment.

with only weeks to go, it is time for potential participants to gear up for various competitions. The largest and most publicized competition will be the Mid-America Regional Chili Cook-Off. There is a monetary prize for the winner, but according to Dell Davis, president and CEO of Claremore Chamber of Commerce, the winner will automatically qualify to go on to the ICS World Chili Cook-Off, and this is what attracts competitors. “The money is inconsequential to these competitors,” says Dell. “They want a place in the World

Cook-Off, because there are only so many sanctioned cook-offs and this guarantees you a spot.” Applications are now available for ICS and other category entries, like the non-profit division, in which non-profit organizations like churches and ball teams can enter and win $1000 for their organization. There is also a corporate division, where local businesses compete for “bragging rights.” For fun, there will also be an open division. “We lovingly call the Open the ‘Road Kill Division,’” Dell Davis

“This was a lot of fun last year,” says Dell, who hopes that other groups assemble a team, sign up, and start working on their outhouses. “The police and fire are already planning their incredible outhouses—for speed, looks, and whatever else. Something about ‘wiping out the competition.’” This combination of formal and informal competition, along with an impressive line-up of all types of music and activities, are all part of a consistently well executed plan that keeps people from a multi-state area coming back year after year to experience the Bluegrass and Chili Festival in Claremore, Oklahoma. Festival sponsors include: City of Claremore, KOTV News on 6, Big Country 99.5, Armco Building/ Derickson Portable Building and the Claremore Chamber of Commerce. Have You Joined the Sisterhood? ally settling into their current location to house their garden of sparkly delights. The Bixby boutique is an Instagram dream. Colorful shag carpets and cowhide line the floors; abundant chandeliers dripping with crystals, antlers, vintage kitsch, and delicious old chairs are among the eye candy decorating the store. Swoon-worthy merchandising includes a tree adorned with slip dresses in faded pastels, antique frames and boxes lined with velvet and filled with original rhinestone-encrusted belt buckles, and large wooden spools housing rows of colorful leather boots. Everything in the store fits a unique aesthetic: hip, eclectic fashions with an often edgy, bohemian southern girl vibe. Sassy slogans on the merchandise are filled with so many giggle-worthy or tweetable quips it’s worth the effort to mosey around the store to check them out. Burlap throw pillows read “Follow Your Arrow”; crisp white kitchen towels confess “I love Jesus but I cuss a little” or

“Don’t feed the hipsters.” One item in particular seems to resonate the Twister Soul Sisters philosophy of celebrating positive difference and sorority--a hand towel reading simply, “You’re a Great Mom.” “We want women to feel good about themselves,” Kelly explained. Kelly says the store’s custom jewelry is still one of the biggest draws. An entire corner of the store is a veritable treasure trove of vintage costume jewelry, leather belts, beads, chains, pendants, crystals, and any number of sparkly delights. Here, Kelly and her team craft their one-of-akind jewelry creations. The boutique carries about 20 different clothing lines, offering fashions from junior to plus size. The store offers a variety of basic items and wardrobe staples, but their specialty is in offering fun styles not available anywhere else--the boutique staff refer to these lovingly as “twisted” styles. Kelly’s goal is for all of the boutique’s items from jewelry to clothing to gifts to be unique and original. The store rotates out their inventory

continued from page 1 constantly so that every shipment of merchandise is full of unique pieces, guaranteeing that shoppers won’t suffer that existential horror of showing up to an event only to find someone else in the same outfit. The store typically only offers items for one run, ensuring a fresh inventory rotation. Often, guests will ask stylists to dress them up, giving boutique staff carte blanche to select pieces that work well for them. Women who don’t normally wear fringe or bright colors will frequently step outside of their comfort zones thanks to the the knowledgeable staff. Team members pride themselves on offering personal attention, something regular guests have come to appreciate. Kelly and her team believe in offering guests plenty of ideas without any pressure. They strive to welcome everyone into the store. Whereas some clothing stores seem to be directed at a very specific audience, Twisted Soul Sisters strives to offer something for each style and personality.

A New Service to Honor Your Furry Family Members mind and heart that has recently come to fruition as she has opened Angel’s Pet Funeral Home and Crematory in Tulsa. Angel wants her pet funeral home to serve as more than just a place to help respectfully dispose of a family pet’s remains. She wants to provide a place of comfort and understanding where the pet’s family can say their final goodbyes and grieve without fear of judgment. Having felt the deep affinity with her own pets and sense of loss at their passing that her clients are feeling, she can provide more than sympathy through the process. She is truly empathetic, as she remembers this experience firsthand. Her many years in the funeral business

have helped her understand the grief process people go through at any type of major loss in their lives. “Most pet owners will tell you their pet is part of the family,” says Angel. “The grief is very real.” During such an emotional and stressful time, Angel knows that pet families need things to run as smoothly as possible. She is very accessible—clients only need let her know at their pet’s passing and she can pick the pet up as soon as possible from the owner or from the veterinarian’s office. Pet owners may also contact her to make prearrangements. The funeral home houses a lovely chapel where families may hold services and

have a final viewing before the cremation if they so wish. In keeping with her spirit of compassion, Angel offers all of her services at highly affordable rates, knowing that grief is a heavy enough load at a time like this without the burden of extreme expense. Angel’s funeral services and cremation are open to pets of all sizes up to large dogs. She has taken care of animals as small as a bird and as large as a mastiff. By helping grieving families in this way, she feels she is fulfilling the dream born so long ago with Maggie’s death. She plans in the near future to build a botanical garden with a parklike, comforting atmosphere so that pet families may come and scatter

Whole house projects, which include kitchen and bath cabinets, baseboards, doors, moldings, paneling and just about any other vertical wood surface can be done in three to five days. The Gleam Guard crew will be in and out, without interruptions or breakaways. Their work area, when finished, will look like no one was there. Aftercare is as simple as wiping with a damp cloth. Tracy says when people see the difference Gleam Guard has made in friends’ or relatives’ homes, they are sold. Even those considering new cabinets or refacing old cabinets frequently decide on Gleam Guard Dust Free Wood Refinishing instead.
