Which Money Personality Are You? BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT Money is a funny thing. Folks will tell you just about anything about themselves before they will talk about money. It is such a taboo topic that many parents don’t even talk about it with their children. Why is that? Is the topic really that delicate and intimate that it needs to be avoided? Will Smith said it best when he stated, “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” As sure as the sky is blue, money is a part of life. It has many personalities; here are a few! The High Roller – This is the type that is all in, no holding back. They believe that the bigger the risk, the better. They may win the jackpot, or they may go home with their tail between their legs. The thrill of the chase is the driving force behind this money personality. The Bean Counter – This person saves for a rainy day. They are bargain hunters. Bean Counters refuse to pay full price for clothing, food, or entertainment. They are sometimes perceived as a cheapskate. These folks are very resourceful. However, sometimes they miss out on the fun of living everyday life.

things. Money isn’t something to be afraid of. Being aware of your finances isn’t frightening. If you check regularly, they won’t be such a shock at the end of the month.

The Penny Priest – This group tends to have of strong religious or political ties in regards to their finances. They have been led to believe that money is the root of all evil. Good, bad or indifferent, money is a way to obtain basic necessities, and support charitable causes. The Budget Buster – These are the spenders of the group. They believe money is earned to be spent. Budget Busters have a spend first, think later mentality. Earning and spending money is part of life. Living above your means shouldn’t be! You don’t need to keep up with The Joneses. That is a slippery slope. The Duck and Cover – This money personality doesn’t want anything to do with finances. They ignore they even exist. Either they don’t feel at ease talking about the subject, or they feel as though their time is better spent on other

The Worry Wart – These money personalities question every purchase that they make. From a cup of coffee to a car, money is always on their mind. They hope they spend it wisely. They think about the worst case scenario in regards to the markets, their accounts, and finances as a whole. Every decision is monumental in their mind. In truth, in might not be. Whether you are a spender, saver, gambler or avoider, it takes all kinds of kinds. The trick is finding balance when it comes to your money. For help finding balance with your finances and your investments, give us a call. We can help. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. High Tech Makes Dental Appointments Faster & Easier Same day crowns and soft tissue lasers are two technologies that make going to the dentist more convenient. By Dr. Steven White Dentistry today has become more convenient, more effective and more comfortable – all major reasons to NOT fear going to the dentist. There are many technologies that we have invested in to bring the best state-of-theart care to our patients. I would like to introduce you to two of them. Same Day Crowns Digital impressions make it possible to produce porcelain crowns and onlays in 1 appointment. We can now take an impression with a camera, instead of the messy, gaggy impression materials you have had to put up with for so long. The picture the camera takes allows us to make a restoration while you wait – or we can complete other dental treatment needed during this “while you wait” time. There are numerous advantages for you with this new technology. The impressions are far more accurate, making the fit of the crowns even better. The impression taking process is much easier and less messy. Also, you only need to get your mouth numb one time and you don’t have to wear a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made. And, you only have to make one trip instead of two.

Different lasers perform varied functions. Our laser performs various treatments on the cheeks, lips, and gum tissue. We utilize it to trim excess gum tissue and make impression taking more precise. We can remove tissue growths and break up pigmentations (discolorations) in the lips and cheeks. The laser can also treat herpetic lesions – cold sores and fever blisters, by shortening the duration and reducing the pain they cause. Another opportunity for the laser is in helping to treat gum disease. As part of our deep cleaning procedures, the laser is used in the infected gums to help create an environment to help the gums heal more effectively.

PPlant Your Feet in Jenks The Jenks Herb & Plant Festival will be Saturday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Jenks.

By Sheryl Sowell Attention all gardeners, plant lovers, and wannabe green thumbs! Widely anticipated as the official start to spring, the Jenks Herb & Plant Festival will be held Saturday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Jenks. Organizers are excited to be celebrating the festival’s 20th year. Main Street literally turns green from the long line of booths brimming over with hundreds of flats of herbs of every variety, vegetables of all kinds – especially tomatoes – to get your garden started, flowers, shrubs and trees, garden decorations, and all the essentials. This one-day, free event hosted by Jenks Garden Club brings thousands of spring shoppers into downtown Jenks each year. The family-friendly event will feature 100 vendors this year, and to make shopping a whole lot easier, a shop and drop station will be available. An exciting new addition to the festival will be the USDA Food Safety Discovery Zone from Washington, D.C. The Zone program incorporates the Be Food Safe campaign with a 40-foot interactive vehicle where

consumers can enter and learn about food safety in a fun and engaging way. The Jenks Kiwanis Club will be flipping pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at First Methodist Church, 415 E. Main St. Several food vendors will be available for hungry shoppers, offering festival staples such as burgers, barbecue, funnel cakes, ice cream and fresh lemonade. Helen Madden, a charter member of the Jenks Garden Club, which began 28 years ago, says the event has a relaxed, wholesome atmosphere due to the quaint setting of downtown Jenks. “It almost feels like a reunion every year. You are certain to run into people you haven’t seen in a while.” Dixie Grahlman, president of the Jenks Garden Club, adds, “The festival has grown so much since club member Bill Twilley said 20 years ago that our club should hold an event like this. We started with a couple of tables of plants, and now an estimated 10,000 people attend each year.” Special edition T-shirts commemorating the 20th anniversary of the event will be on sale for $20.

Jenks Garden Club members welcome you to the 20th annual Jenks Herb & Plant Festival on Saturday, April 23. (L to R): Helen Madden, charter member; Sherry Bonner, vice president; and Dixie Grahlman, president. Relaxing acoustic music will fill the air as people of all ages enjoy a spring day outside in beautiful downtown Jenks. Of course, sunshine would be ideal, but the festival is held rain or shine. Mark your calendar now to attend this free event. Membership to the Jenks Garden Club is open to anyone interested in gardening, novice

Musical Mondays M LIFE Senior Services’ 15th annual concert series kicks off April 18 with Rick Fortner and Tavis Minner.

By Julie Alexander

Tulsa has a reputation as a city with a vibrant music scene. From red dirt and jazz to orchestral and opera, there is something for everyone. But Jan Dunkelberg learned there was something missing, especially for Tulsa’s older adults while serving as the senior center and active aging coordinator for LIFE Senior Services. She discovered many of the agency’s clients were missing out on Tulsa’s musical offerings. “Visiting with members of our senior centers, just casually, someone would mention that an artist was coming to the Performing Arts Center or someone was coming to the Jazz Hall of Fame to perform. And I was hearing people say, ‘I’m not going.’ It was too late in the evening or because it was downtown. It was a safety concern,” she said, explaining many of the center’s members preferred not to drive downtown, especially after dark. Dunkelberg had an idea to bring the music to the them, and LIFE’s Musical Mondays was born. Now in its 15th season,

the monthly concert series first kicked off with two concerts held in the sanctuary of East Side Christian Church. It has now grown into a series of five concerts. “The first year was a success and the goal was to extend the programming that we offer at our senior centers,” she said. “It filled part of our mission by offering entertainment that was suitable, convenient and affordable for the seniors we serve.” Dunkelberg is now retired from LIFE Senior Services, but is still the producer of the concert series. Her goal each year is to provide a variety of local music, and this year’s lineup is a testament to the talent of Tulsa area performers. The series kicks off April 18 with the contemporary and jazz stylings of Rick Fortner and Tavis Minner. Jazz singer Annie Ellicott takes the stage May 23. Pop, classical and gospel performed by Voices of Unity is scheduled for June 27. Olivia Duhon will perform standards

Performances are held at Cascia Hall’s Performing Arts Center, located at 26th Street and Utica Avenue. Doors open at 6 p.m. Performances begin at 7 p.m. Sponsors for this year’s concert series are Senior Star, Legend Senior Living, Oklahoma’s Methodist Manor, Community Care and Tapestry at Woodland Hills. American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women 2016 Saves Lives The annual luncheon will be held Friday, May 13, 2016.

By Mary Waller Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. Fortunately, this can change, because 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes.

Value News readers can help. All it takes to impact a life is getting more informed about the risks of heart disease and stroke. Learn the red flags. Know your own personal family “heart health story.” And don’t be afraid to talk to your

family, friends or physician if you become concerned about anything “out of the ordinary” health-wise for you. We are fortunate to have a strong chapter of the American Heart Association (AHA) here in Tulsa. The mission of the AHA is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That single purpose drives everything their team does. Growing out of that mission is a focus on heart-health education and wellness for females, known as the Go Red for Women campaign. Each spring, they coordinate a major fundraising event that supports community-wide health awareness programs and activities. “The need for AHA’s work and our support is beyond question,” said John “Jay” Foley, COO of Cancer Treatment Centers of America and the 2015 Go Red for Women Chair, with the help of his wife, Nita. “My passion for AHA comes from how heart disease has affected my life. When I was 15, my father died of cardiac arrest in front of my family in our living room. It led me to become an EMT in college, and to pursue a career in emergency medicine after graduation. As an EMT, I responded to many cardiac emergencies and witnessed the toll it took on the families that were left behind.” According to Foley, his maternal grandfather died of a cardiac arrest when he was still in grammar school. “Seven years ago, my sister also collapsed in her home in front of her family from a cardiac event and passed away. She was in her mid-50s and was otherwise in excellent health. “Nita and I are asking our friends, neighbors, co-workers and fellow business and civic leaders to join the Go Red movement – to unite to prevent heart disease and stroke,” said Foley. “Our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends are at risk. With the arrival of April weather comes a chance to garden

Women More Likely to Experience Other Heart Attack Symptoms – Know the Signs According to the AHA, women are more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms. That’s why it’s important to know the signs of heart attack in women so you can recognize them early: •

Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

Calling 9-1-1 is almost always the fastest way to get lifesaving treatment. Emergency medical services (EMS) staff can begin treatment when they arrive — up to an hour sooner than if someone gets to the hospital by car. EMS staff is also trained to revive someone whose heart has stopped. or enjoy the outdoors, celebrate graduations, or plan a Mom’s Day gathering. The Best Money Management Habit Ever

“Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.

By Jocelyn Wood Who wants to save more money? To do so, we have to spend less, which can be accomplished in a number of ways. • Avoid impulse shopping. • Eliminate unwanted expenses, e.g., late charges, convenience fees. • Set up automatic money transfers to a savings account. But when we get down to the nitty-gritty of daily life, watching our spending habits can get lost in the moment. Just this week, I made three trips to my local superstore in a 72-hour period. Did I need to? At the time, I could justify each urgent need. Looking at my bank account balance, now I’m not so sure each trip was an absolute necessity. So how do we fix our psychological need versus want versus necessity battle that keeps chipping away at our finances? We start by using the best money management tool ever – the checkbook register (or its contemporary electronic clone). Tracking your money is the most important habit to develop. It takes a little time, but the benefit is financially rewarding. Here are

four reasons, from bankers who swear by their checkbook registers, why you should take a closer look at your daily finances. Reason No. 1. – Help curb impulse shopping and recognize wasteful spending habits. “You can make plans and budgets, but they don’t always go as you intend,” said Wayne Webster, VP, Commercial Loans, RCB Bank. “Your checkbook register offers an honest look at your spending history. For instance, you may not realize you’re spending $50 a month at the coffee shop. To see it written down, right there, may be motivation to cut back. Anytime I’m about to spend money, I look at my register and know exactly where I stand.” Reason No. 2 – Know your actual account balance. “There are a lot of ways to interact with your checking account – debit cards, ATM withdrawals, checks, auto debits and online bill pay,” said Shelly Fields, Retail Coordinator, RCB Bank. “My register is the only way to keep an accurate balance at any given time.” “It takes a matter of seconds to write down my expenses in my

register before I leave the store,” added Webster. “Online and text banking don’t know if I wrote a check yesterday, or have an auto debit scheduled for next week. If I’m just spending and not tracking, and not comparing it with my budget, I may run into trouble.” Reason No. 3 – Fraud, mistakes, fees and unwanted expenses can slip through the cracks if you don’t stay involved in your finances. “You could be a victim of fraud, or a simple mistake can happen at any given time,” said Brenda Romesburg, Customer Service Rep, RCB Bank. “Scammers can alter checks or run debit cards for more than requested. Keeping a close eye on your account and keeping your own personal ledger can help prevent you from losing money.” Reason No. 4 – Your financial footprint is in your credit report. “The harsh reality is that how you manage your money is part of your credit history,” said Richard Jackson, Mortgage Loan Closer, RCB Bank. “It can take as little as 15 minutes a week to compare your checkbook register with your

online banking account so you can stay on top of your finances.” Getting started is easy. Pick up a checkbook register from your bank, download a money register app or create your own register with a notepad. Each day, enter all your money transactions. Using a checkbook register keeps Evette Add a little note Kelley, of Tulsa, in control of her finances. to help you clarify your expenses. Review your register with your bank statement For more information, contact each month and double check errors. Taking this step will put RCB Bank you on track to improving your financial well-being. 855-BANK-RCB Opinions expressed above are www.RCBbank.com the personal opinions of the author and persons interviewed and meant www.ValueNews.com for generic illustration purposes only. Time for a Spring Checkup our goal is to keep our customers comfortable, satisfied and happy,” said Jordan. “And when you call Aire Serv, your call will be answered by a person, not a recording device or answering service. When necessary to call for service after business hours, we strive to call you back promptly.” The Rapers are proud of Aire Serv’s Code of Values that lists: Respect – treating others as we would like to be treated; Integrity – making commitments we intend to keep and operating in a responsible manner; and Customer Focus – continuously striving to maximize customer loyalty by genuinely appreciating customer needs. “We strive to

live by our Code of Values,” said Jordan. “We listen with the intent to understand what is being said and then acknowledge that we heard what is important to our customer.” Anyone can get stressed when their air conditioning or heating system is on the fritz. And why does it always seem to happen at the worst time? The Aire Serv team is going to do their best to restore your system as quickly as possible. Problem issues will be fully explained to you along with recommended solutions to get you back in business. You’ll be charged by the job, not by the hour, and your satisfaction is guaranteed. You will know the cost before any work has begun and there will never

continued from page 1 be additional charges for anything. You’ll have the opportunity to make a decision that provides the best possible solution for your family. Spring is just around the corner and Aire Serv suggests that you schedule two worthwhile inspections each year for your system, spring and fall checkups. Who would dream of not taking their vehicle in for recommended services? The same is true for your HVAC system. Spring and fall inspections put minds at ease, keep systems working at peak efficiency and can even extend system life while reducing utility bills. “Our Total Comfort Tune-Up is much less expensive than having to prematurely replace an entire system,” said Jordan.

Spring Into the Expo Attendees will receive lots of goodies simply for showing up to the event! Opening day is Earth Day, and in celebration of this national holiday, show director Frank Sawyer has announced that the first 1,000 families entering the show will be offered a Loblolly Pine Tree sapling ready to take home and plant. In addition, each attendee will be given a voucher valued at $15 for free document shredding provided by Green Country Shredding and Recycling in Broken Arrow. This comes at the perfect time to shred that oldest year of tax records and other “spring cleaning” discards. Show staff will also distribute 1,500 samples of Grandma’s Lye Soap and Grandma’s Laundry Soap. These nationally recognized all-

natural cleaning products are made in Tulsa and provided by Remwood Products. Show visitors will be offered the opportunity to register to win the 92.9 BOB-FM Classic Car Giveaway. Contest details are available on 929BOBFM.com, and this year’s car will be on display at the expo. There will also be drawings for $100 Reasor’s gift cards and a grand prize drawing on Sunday at 4 p.m. HGTV celebrity Chris Lambton will be featured on the Value News Celebrity Stage over the weekend. Chris is host to HGTV’s new “Going Yard” series. Many readers may also recognize Chris from “The Bachelorette,” where he was a competing bachelor. Other local experts will also have stage sessions

He is dependable, calm and level-headed, but both acknowledged that he does have a darker side – Tony is a prankster. rating with the Tulsa Better Business Bureau. “Without great service support,” says Kelly, “there wouldn’t be any repeat sales.” So, whether you’re mowing your yard, maintaining an acreage or baling hay, Tulsa New Holland wants to be your “Partner For Life.”

Vendors outside and inside the historic Tulsa Garden Center home will offer exceptional craft items and fine art for you, your home and garden.
