Since 2011, Dr. Melita Tate has practiced medicine at Grassroots Healthcare in a way that clears away the impersonal paperwork and bureaucracy that characterizes most physician’s offices. Located at 91st and Sheridan, Grassroots Healthcare is best described
as a small town clinic tucked amongst the restaurants and businesses of south Tulsa. Dr. Tate and her staff treat a wide spectrum of medical conditions ranging from stitches to high blood pressure, urgent care to chronic illness. The (continued on page 22)

A driveway that is pitted and stained, with grass growing between the cracks, instantly steals curb appeal from a home. Not to mention the safety hazard of walking over an uneven surface from tree roots under the drive. LCI Concrete can transform this unsightly mess into an attractive, maintenance-free driveway in just one to two days. That’s because LCI specializes in residential replacement driveways. They have been doing drives for 10 years. And, according to owner Kalan Paul,

Should I Buy Gold? retirement planning.” (This one takes the cake!) • 2015: ISIS, Beginning of the End of Days, Fear of Interest Rates going up, Markets at All Time High, Crash is Imminent.
BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
When folks start getting fearful of what they are seeing on television or hearing on the radio, this is a question I hear a lot. Gold is the “go to” investment for people when they are trying to “protect” themselves along with hiding cash in their mattress. There is this idea that if we were in the “end of days” that trading gold coins would become the method of commerce. However, I am of the opinion that if this type of catastrophic failure were upon us (and we weren’t among the first wave to go) that neither cash nor gold would be of much value. If anything, goats, water, and ammunition would be in high demand! Nearly every day I hear folks tell me about why they think they should not invest in the stock market right now. Some of these ideas seem to be relatively reasonable fears about investing, some not so much. The following are the most popular excuses I have heard over the last 16 years. See if you can relate to any of them. • 1999: The Y2k bug is about to crash all the world’s computers. “We will have no accounting of our money at the bank or on our brokerage statements!” • 2000: The dot-com bubble burst. “The market is crashing. It will never come back!” • 2001: Terrorist attacks destroyed both World Trade Centers and the hit the Pentagon. “The nuclear bomb is next. We need to have all of our money under a mattress at home!” • 2002: Corporate Accounting

Issues. “Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing have all betrayed investors therefore all companies are corrupt and we should not invest!” • 2005: Hurricane Katrina wiped out New Orleans! “This is the beginning of the end!” • 2008: Sub-prime mortgage crisis/ Global Financial Crisis. “ The banks are collapsing. There will be no more economy!” (Don’t ever watch MSNBC in a crisis! That’s another story all together!) • 2009: Worst recession since the Great Depression. “The market won’t come back for 20 years!” • 2011: Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, U.S. Debt Ceiling. “ No one in the world is going to have any money! We are all going to hell in a handbasket!” • 2012: Presidential Election pending November 2012. “The U.S. deficit is so high that America can’t regain it’s financial strength!” • 2012: The Mayan Calendar ends December 21, 2012. “The earth’s gravitational poles are going to reverse and we will all fall out into space. Therefore, there is no need for
Chances are some of these fears resonate with you. Emotionally we are always thinking of reasons not to invest in the stock market. Clearly these headlines and the fears that they create devise volatility in the stock market. The truth is the markets always climb a wall of worry. If you stick your head in the sand to avoid the fears and worry, the markets will pass you by. It matters where you are invested. It matters who you choose to help you. Find someone who can help you invest your money and manage the volatility. Find someone who can help you deal with your fears through common sense. We can help. Oral Cancer Takes a Bite Out of Life Your dentist is much more likely to detect an oral cancer during a routine exam than your physician would be during a physical. By Steve White, D.D.S According to the American Dental Association almost 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral and throat cancers this year. And that the 5-year survival rate of those diagnosed is only slightly more than 64 percent. When cancer is treated early, treatment-related health problems are reduced. I talk to you about your health history and check for precancerous and cancerous lesions in the
mouth, throat and skin on your head and neck during your routine dental exam. Regular exams improve the chances of early detection of any suspicious changes in your oral health.
Symptoms of mouth or throat cancer can include: a sore irritation that does not go away; red or white patches; pain, tenderness or numbness in the mouth or lips; a lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area; difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your tongue or jaw; a change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth. People wearing dentures usually don’t go to the dentist as often unless they still have their own teeth on the other arch. It is important for denture wearers to be screened for oral cancer every year or two depending on their risk factors. It is equally important to make sure the dentures fit properly and aren’t causing problems the patient may not be aware of. Factors that can increase the risk of oral cancer are tobacco use of any kind, heavy alcohol use, previous oral cancer diagnosis and history of significant sun exposure, which increases the risk of lip cancer. At higher risk are those who are smokers and excessive alcohol drinkers older than 50. And recently, HPV (human papilloma virus) has been associated with increasing incidence of throat cancers in non-smoking adults.
Regular visits to your dentist can improve the chances that any suspicious changes in your oral health will be caught early, at a time when cancer can be treated more easily. In between visits, it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms and to see your dentist if they don’t disappear after two weeks.

GGoodwill = Jobs Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrates 2014 accomplishments with Annual Awards Presentation Luncheon.
By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa provides work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities or other employment barriers and envisions a community where all people have the training and opportunities they need to be successful in the workplace, regardless of the barriers to employment they must overcome. “In 2014,” says Goodwill President David Oliver, “our Community invested nearly $21 million in Goodwill, and Goodwill invested nearly $21
million back into the Community. The total economic impact of all Goodwill programs and operations was $93.9 million.” On May 5, Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrated 2014 accomplishments at their Awards Luncheon Program at the Southern Hills Marriott Hotel with nearly 700 in attendance. The event was emceed by Kristen Dickerson, Evening News Anchor, KTUL. Employee of the Year honors went to Robert Mayfield. Due to circumstances beyond his

control, Robert found it difficult to get a good, stable job as he got older. This was frustrating and devastating for someone who longs to be busy. Robert was referred to Goodwill’s Contracts Division. During his nearly twenty years with Goodwill, Robert has mastered a wide variety of packaging and assembly jobs. His full-time employment has provided the stability, pride and self-sufficiency he sought. In addition to earning his way, Robert has developed a strong circle of friends that he

never before had. Kevin Anderson was the recipient of the Graduate of the Year Award. Throughout his early years, Kevin struggled with shyness. Nearing high school graduation, he still didn’t have the confidence needed to obtain a steady job. Kevin was directed to Goodwill’s training programs for students with special needs by his family. In 2012 he was enrolled in the Transition Services program. Kevin began coming out of his shell and became an attentive student and natural leader for other students. When attending community job shadow events, Kevin was inquisitive, curious, asked good questions and showed appreciation for the opportunity to explore the real-life working world. In 2013 he transitioned to Goodwill’s Supported Employment program and wrote his resume to apply for his first retail job. Target hired Kevin as a cart attendant in 2013 and within one year he was working independently, passed his driving test and purchased a car so he could drive himself to work. Kevin has also received the Goodwill Work Adjustment Success Award and the Governor’s Disability Employment Award of Excellence. Mary Park received the Achiever of the Year award. Like most working moms, Mary’s stable job of 19 years helped provide for her family. Then suddenly she was told that her employer did not need her anymore. “Everything I was and everything I could be vanished into thin air,” said Mary. With
her confidence shattered, she thought it would be impossible to find anyone who would give her a chance at employment and that learning new skills would be too difficult. After being guided to the Career Readiness and Employment Essential classes by TulsaWORKS, Mary learned computer basics, customer service and job preparation skills which gave her the confidence to search for a new job. Mary is now a full-time Billing Specialist with Pediatric Specialists of Tulsa and appreciates the help given her by Goodwill and TulsaWORKS. Town & Country School was cited as the 2014 Community Partner. Town & Country is Oklahoma’s only accredited, nonpublic school specifically designed to meet the needs of students who have been diagnosed with learning differences and attention disorders (ADHD). Representing the School, Principal Shevaun Etier received the award. Thanks again, Tulsa, for your faithful support in helping individuals overcome considerable challenges to meet their goals! Carnival opens 40th annual Bixby’s Green Corn Festival June 25-27 surrounded by about 60 food and crafts booths. A talent show to highlight area youth is held on Friday at the Community Center and the annual Green Corn Parade entertains the masses on Saturday morning. Also on Saturday, cool off during the heat of the day by joining in a few rounds of bingo at the Community Center. What could be more traditional than an afternoon or evening in the bright summer sun, with lemonade to sip, an array of crafts and gifts to purchase, music to enjoy listening to, with your friends all around? Only a ride on the ferris wheel as the sun sets and the sounds of carnival music drift up in the evening air. The Street Dance is also very popular. The Bixby area is known for its fine home-grown produce and has the reputation for being the garden spot of Oklahoma. Its location in the Arkansas Valley flood plane contributes to its rich fertile bottom land. Bixby gained nation-wide reputation as the garden spot during World War II when it shipped produce to every state. The old Farmers Market CoOperative on the east side of Memorial Drive was in full swing during this time, operating 24 hours a day and shipping corn out by the box car. It was during this time that the late Clyde Miller, who was a prominent grower and shipper,

decided after a very fruitful season, to reward and share his good fortune with his pickers and packers. He organized a festival, which included food, games and music for their enjoyment. His efforts were well received by not only his employees but the town’s people as well. Thus, the idea of the Bixby Green Corn Festival was born. Over the years, the festival had been sponsored by several different civic organizations and had been an on-again off-again affair until the Optimist Club of Bixby resurrected it in 1975. The Optimist Club added a new dimension to the festival in 1980 with the sponsorship of the Miss Bixby Scholarship Pageant. The pageant provided a new method of selecting a Miss Bixby and a young lady to represent Bixby. The objective of the Club in sponsoring the festival is to provide an atmosphere in which the citizens of Bixby and their friends can meet and renew old friendships. Young says it is a delight to watch the kids grow and enjoy the wide variety of “non-electronic” games. Young said everything the Green Corn Festival generates goes back to the kids in the community. She singled out the Fishing Derby event with 160 kids participating last year as one example. Thursday and Friday are evening events. Saturday is all day.

Woolaroc Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Kidsfest! For a lot of people, summer in Oklahoma officially begins with KIDSFEST at Woolaroc!
By Bob Fraser, CEO Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve This year’s weekend festival is extra special as Woolaroc celebrates the 25th anniversary of this wonderful event. The dates are June 27th and 28th and it promises to be the best ever according to Woolaroc staff. The main campus of Woolaroc will be covered with children’s games, arts & crafts, huge inflatables, pony rides, train rides, jugglers, magicians, good food, face painting, treasure digs and more! It is old-fashioned fun the way the summer should be…..and there is something fun for kids of all ages (including Grandma and Grandpa!). Woolaroc’s founder, oil man Frank Phillips, had a soft spot in his heart for children. Each year in Bartlesville, he brought the circus to town and he hosted Christmas parties for the kids each year. “Without a doubt, Kidsfest at Woolaroc would meet with his approval, as there was nothing he enjoyed more than throwing a party, showing off his beloved Woolaroc and hearing the laughter of children,” said Woolaroc CEO Bob Fraser. Paula Blackwell, Events Coordinator for Woolaroc, said,
“Parents who came to Kidsfest years ago as children are now bringing their kids so the tradition continues. We are blessed at
Woolaroc with a staff that loves putting this on each year, plus we have a large group of volunteers who give of their time so that

the children can enjoy this very special weekend.” “Once again, the main campus of Woolaroc will transform into a magical children’s wonderland,” said Fraser. “25 years ago, the staff at Woolaroc wanted to do something special for the children and consistent with our mission. Ever since then, Kidsfest has been a special part of summer for kids in Oklahoma, Kansas and beyond…. while much of it remains the same, we are always making some

changes and improvements to make sure that each year there is something new and special for the kids to enjoy!” While the grounds are covered with children and games, the rest of Woolaroc is open to the public, including the Museum and the historic Lodge home. A visit to Kidsfest will give a lot of people their first chance to tour and see the new renovations that have taken place in the museum and to visit the Woolaroc Gift Shop and see some of the new Woolaroc brand food items that are guaranteed to please (salsas, jams, coffee, pickles and more). Admission to Woolaroc is $10 for adults, $8 for 65+ and Children 11 and under and Members of Woolaroc are admitted for FREE!. There is no additional charge for Kidsfest weekend. Hours for Kidsfest are 10 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday. Woolaroc, a national treasure that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located 12 miles SW of Bartlesville and 45 miles NW of Tulsa on State Highway 123.

22015 Great Race to Travel Route 66 Claremore will host a stop for one of the country’s most amazing automobile spectacles. By Lisa Rogers
Dad’s Day Out at the Claremore Expo Center, featuring the Great Race Vintage Car Rally.
Claremore will host a lunch stop on the 2015 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty Sunday, June 21, race organizers have announced. The Great Race, the world’s premiere old car rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles to the Claremore Expo Center for the $150,000 event. The race will start June 20 in Kirkwood, Mo., and finish June 28 at the Santa Monica Pier in California traveling along historic Route 66. Along the 2,400-mile route, competitors will travel parts of The Mother Road in all eight states it originally ran through – Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The Great Race, which began 32 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins. Cars start – and hopefully finish – one minute apart if all goes according to plan. The
biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each day, organizers say. The cars will arrive in Claremore starting at 12:30 p.m. at one-minute intervals for two hours. Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars for several hours. It is common for kids to climb in the cars for a first-hand look. Visit Claremore is hosting a variety of family friendly events to help celebrate Father’s Day starting at 11am until 4pm. Cars built in 1972 and earlier are eligible, with most entries having been manufactured before World War II. In the 2014 Great Race from Maine to Florida, a 1915 Hudson racer, a 1916 Hudson Hillclimber and a 1917 Peerless were the three oldest vehicles. All of those vehicles are participating again in 2015. Last year’s winners, Barry and Irene Jason of Keller, Texas, drove a 1966 Mustang and won $50,000. It was the first time a post-war automobile won the Great Race. The 2015 winners will again receive $50,000 of the $150,000 total purse. “When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant
festival,” race director Jeff Stumb said. “Last year we had three overnight stops with more than 10,000 spectators on our way to having 250,000 people see the Great Race during the event.” Lunch stops, in order, are Rolla, Mo.; Claremore, Okla.; Elk City, Okla.; Tucumcari, N.M.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Winslow, Ariz.; Kingman, Ariz.; and Twentynine Palms, Calif. The event was started in 1983 by Tom McRae and it takes its name from the 1965 movie, The Great Race, which starred Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood and Peter Falk. The movie is a comedy based on the real life 1908 automobile race from New York to Paris. In 2004, Tony Curtis was the guest of the Great Race and rode in his car from the movie, the Leslie Special. Thunderbird Berry Farm is a great place to take the family AND pick delicious berries! By Duane Blankenship Thunderbird Berry Farm is a family-owned and -operated business that was begun in the summer of 2005 by Don Hansen. Today there are four generations of Hansons involved in one way or another with running the beautiful berry farm located east of Broken Arrow at Kenosha (71st Street) & 321st E. Ave. The business was begun with the growing of blueberries and has expanded to include blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, hay and cage free eggs plus several vegetables including onions, squash, cucumbers, carrots, asparagus and okra. And new for this year, Thunderbird Berry Farm is selling jelly and jam products that are made in a state licensed kitchen. In addition to the Berry Farm, Don also raises beef cattle on his land and produces corn, soy bean, milo and baled hay.
“We run Thunderbird Berry Farm as not only a place to come and pick your own berries, but as a place where families feel welcomed,” says Don. “Efforts are made to ensure that every visitor experiences a good time while on our land and we’ve provided a place for kids to play while the adults are picking berries. We’ve also kept the price of our ‘you-pick-’em berries’ at $3 per pound for over ten years now.” If you don’t care to pick your own, pre-picked berries are $4.50 per pound (when available). Don also makes this offer to every customer…”Pick two buckets for me and the third one’s yours for free.” Now you can’t beat a deal like that! When WWII ended, Don came to Tulsa with his best friend from High School in South Dakota to attend Tulsa University. His friend’s Uncle

By Adam Foreman It’s lucky number seven for the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center and Kristin Chenoweth Theatre, as the seventh season of the Spotlight Series is celebrated for 2015-2016 with “Legends Alive,” highlighted by the triumphant stage performance of Liza Minnelli. This season brings a wealth of unforgettable Broadway shows, immortal entertainers and multi-award winners from all walks of life as well as three bonus shows that are guaranteed to please. The season kicks off with the legendary musical “Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on Sept. 27; Tony-winning musical “Ragtime” swings into town on Dec. 8; The Ten Tenors are back again with a Christmas show on Dec. 15; 2016 kicks off with Broadway legend Patti LuPone and her show “Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda…played that part” on Jan. 29; “Million Dollar Quartet” hits the stage with four musical legends and their night of magic on Feb. 5; another Broadway legend, Bernadette Peters, takes
the stage March 5; and the season closes out with none other than comedian and actress Lily Tomlin on April 22. In addition, three bonus shows pepper the landscape this year, starting with hometown girl Kristin Chenoweth returning to inspire young performers for her second master class on Aug. 7. Contemporary Christian artist Steven Curtis Chapman brings his 30-plus year career to the BAPAC on August 22. And finally on Nov. 12, Emmy, Tony, Grammy and Oscar winning legend Liza Minnelli comes to town for what is sure to be an unforgettable evening. “We have really packed this season with nothing but legendary artists and shows,” said Mark Frie, BAPAC Foundation president/ CEO. “To see all these names side by side, it makes me proud to know the BAPAC is becoming an entertainment destination.” Since 2009, the Broken Arrow PAC has been the cornerstone of the Rose District in downtown BA and continually encourages the community to embrace a variety of performing arts. It also serves as the official location for the Broken
Arrow Public Schools fine arts programs. “Not only are we bringing the world to Broken Arrow with talented touring companies and award-winning artists for patrons, but we are also providing educational outreach programs for Broken Arrow students and beyond. With cast talkbacks after Broadway shows and master classes with stars like Kristin Chenoweth, students are able to connect with the real world of performing,” Frie said. “This summer we are holding our inaugural Kristin Chenoweth Broadway Boot Camp, where 50 students will learn the in’s and out’s of the performance world from higher education professionals and stage veterans. It’s just the beginning of what we will do to help today’s students realize their future aspirations as tomorrow’s fine arts performers.” Season tickets for this year’s Spotlight Series go on sale May 18 to previous season subscribers, who also get first shot at purchasing tickets to all three bonus shows. Your Well-Being is First and Foremost at Grassroots Healthcare. continued from page 1
office is quiet, private and welcoming – qualities seldom experienced in the typical medical environment. As the rest of the healthcare industry scurries to adjust to the paradigm shift inflicted by the Affordable Care Act, Dr. Tate’s exam rooms are busier than ever. One reason for the growing roster of satisfied patients is Dr. Tate’s high quality, pragmatic approach to medicine. Another reason is the simple business model of the clinic: Grassroots Healthcare does not accept insurance. Avoiding insurance and Medicare altogether enables Dr. Tate and staff to focus on patients and keep costs as low as possible. “We do have patients who are insured,” Dr. Tate notes, “but often, they have high deductibles or co-pays that make it difficult to go to a big hospital.” Patients find it refreshing to know exactly what they will be charged for medical services. The common sense process means patients are more informed about their medical care and less stressed about making payments.
In fact, lowering stress is a concern Dr. Tate has been emphasizing with her patients, as well as other characteristics of a more holistic approach to medicine. More than ever, Americans are grappling with health concerns related to stress, depression, anxiety and obesity. Unfortunately, these are issues that don’t necessarily get better with more medication. Considering side effects can undermine health as much as the original symptoms for which medicine was prescribed; the entire approach begs the question. “We try to focus on helping patients get off medication and establish a healthy lifestyle,” explains Dr. Tate. After all, if a person can overcome depression, obesity or high blood pressure without medication, isn’t this the best approach? Over the years, Dr. Tate has increasingly encouraged patients to reevaluate their eating habits. “Avoiding processed foods and eliminating sugar is not easy,” she says, “but once patients see the results, they are motivated to look for other ways to eat healthier and become more active.”
Dr. Tate recalls a patient who started out by eliminating sugar and fast food for a month. When he returned for a follow up, he seemed like a changed man. “He told me he hadn’t felt this great in years. He was thinking more quickly, he had lost weight and was happy. It really opened my eyes about how big a difference making better food choices can have on health.” Now, Dr. Tate is keen to suggest ideas aimed at wellness, rather than reaching immediately for the prescription pad. Local honey can be helpful for allergies. Food elimination regimens can aid symptoms like headaches and depression. Meditation can lower stress and increase mental clarity. And, while medication is prescribed if it is needed, the goal is to get to the root cause of a problem instead of merely treating isolated symptoms. The approach has been wellreceived by patients, who return to the Grassroots office healthier and happier than ever. In fact, in order to save time (and money) in the exam room, Dr.
Tate has begun a series of live webcasts to discuss these topics. A recent episode, Sugarfree Freedom, explores the health benefits of avoiding sugar – something that we all know we should do, but rarely practice. Your path to wellness is just a phone call or internet click away. To experience the affordable services of Grassroots Healthcare, call and schedule a visit with Dr. Tate. The Grassroots Healthcare Wellness Show airs live at 12:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Friday of every month, with replays available on demand.

Replacement Driveways Done Right, Priced Right, On Time “We do them right the first time. We show up when we say we’re going to show up and we do what we say we’re going to do.” Kalan takes pride in the sterling reputation the company has earned with the Better Business Bureau and with Angie’s List. But most of all, he is proud of comments like this from his customers: “Excellent experience having LCI replace our driveway. They worked tirelessly all day to complete ahead of spring rains. Our driveway looks superb and we could not be happier. And they are very competitive in pricing.” Kalan has worked in the construction industry for more than 22 years, starting while a sales manager in the corporate world. He has built custom homes, rehabbed homes and owned rental property. Honesty and
integrity is the cornerstone of his business. He shows up on time for appointments. He quotes the same prices for the same job, whether a modest or affluent neighborhood. His crew, with a combined 30 years’ experience, is also on time. And they are respectful of the property and owner. They typically remove the old drive, set the new one—always with rebar—and clean up, leaving an attractive first impression in just one day. For a decorative touch, they can add a scored border along the edges or a scored diamond pattern. All their driveways require no ongoing maintenance. “It really bothers me,” he says, “when customers tell me stories about two men and a truck that come to town, set up an office in a hotel room and call people with too-good-to-betrue prices. They collect a deposit and
then the customer has to hunt for them to get the work started.” Kalan is deeply rooted in the community, where he and his wife are raising their four adopted children. He is happy when people stop him on the street or in a coffee shop and ask, “Aren’t you the guy who did the driveway at…?” The LCI website includes a list of addresses where they have replaced driveways. Anyone interested can drive by and take a look before calling. The website also includes many customer accolades, such as: “Fantastic workmanship all around. The crew showed up as scheduled, was polite got right down to work and worked very hard. They removed the old concrete, installed the forms and poured the new concrete all in one day. They did a fabulous job and were very knowledgeable
continued from page 1
about the whole process. My lawn looked just as good when they finished as it did when they arrived. They even cleaned the street in front of my house.” LCI Concrete serves the Tulsa metro area. All calls go directly to Kalan’s cell phone, which he personally answers from 9 till 5, Monday through Friday.

White has already experienced extraordinary success, having shared the stage with country music icon Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, Luke Bryan, Shooter Jennings, and Big and Rich.
