How great is that for DIY enthusiasts! Jim jokingly says, “We carry 11 window brands, but five of them are here so we can show you what not to buy!” He adds, “Honestly, an advertised ‘low-energy’ window does not mean you’re buying a good window. ain Guard of Tulsa, Inc., is a seamless gutter system serving northeastern Oklahoma. Owner David Bootenhoff started the business in 1982 in a garage on the north side of Tulsa, made possible by a loan from his father. David and his team of highly skilled and trained professionals have provided residential and commercial services to Oklahomans through the booms and busts experienced by our state over the past 35 years. They provide a variety of gutter styles, materials and colors for entrylevel through luxury home. Rain Guard is known for their consistent highest-quality workmanship, products and for the quality of their people. “We’re full-time guttering,” says David, “the brick and mortar of our trade.” They enjoy being known as Oklahoma’s number one family-owned gutter company operating from their 8,000 sq. ft. facility built in 2008. They serve the Tulsa Metro Area reaching out over a radius of 75 miles from Tulsa including Owasso, Jenks, Bixby, Broken Arrow, Bartlesville and the Grand Lake area. “We’re very proud to be Oklahoma’s exclusive dealer for Gutter Helmet®, the pioneer and 10 |

undisputed leader in the gutter protection industry,” says David. Their craftsmen are factory certified to install all Gutter Helmet leaf-protection products. With the strong winds sweeping the plains of Oklahoma, many homeowners lament when gutters fill up with leaves, branches, pine needles and other debris. Keeping gutters clean and free from inevitable clogging is a laborious task. If they are not free of debris, rainwater can back up, overflow the gutters and cause damage to your roof, flowerbeds and even your home’s foundation. The installation of a patented Gutter Helmet System can ensure that your home is protected and the laborious chore of cleaning gutters is eliminated. Rain Guard of Tulsa, Inc. provides copper, steel and aluminum guttering for any type or style home. “A copper gutter system has the potential to last a lifetime if installed properly,” says David, “and every Rain Guard gutter installation comes with a 5-year workmanship and a 20-year material finish warranty.” “We enjoy maintaining our good relationship with the communities we serve and do a lot of charity work,” says David. “Some of our customers have been with us through three or

hen you think of good old time southern gospel, what comes to mind? When you think of some of the biggest names in country music, who is on that list? If you can imagine blending the two together, you just might come up with a four-day event with over twenty of the biggest names in southern gospel music, top that off with legendary country music headliners The Oak Ridge Boys and Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers and what you get is the 49th Annual Brumley Gospel Sing coming to Tulsa’s Mabee Center August 2-5! The Brumley Gospel Sing has been entertaining southern gospel fans since 1969 when Albert E. Brumley brought together several gospel artists for an all night sing at a rodeo in Springdale, Arkansas. Since that time the event has grown in number of

artists performing and fans attending to encompass dozens of southern gospel artists and over 20,000 fans attending each year. Having moved their location several times over the past five decades, the Brumley Gospel Sing moved to Tulsa’s Mabee Center from Lebanon, Missouri for the first time in 2016 and in 2017 the 49th Annual Brumley Gospel Sing returns to the Mabee Center August 2-5 for the second consecutive year. “The Oak Ridge Boys and Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers headlining the event this year is an exciting addition for our 49th year,” said Brumley Music’s president, Bob Brumley. Both are Grammy Award winning country music icons and both have roots in southern gospel music that run deep. In an interview recently with Joe Bonsall with The Oak Ridge

Boys, he said, “we started out in gospel music and although we have branched out into country music, gospel is a big part of our heritage and we sing some gospel every single night.” The band remembers playing at one of the first Brumley Gospel Sings in Arkansas with The Blackwood Brothers, which will be performing at this year’s event. Joe said, “The set list at the Brumley event will include a lot of our big hits as well as a lot of gospel tunes.” When asked what projects The Oak Ridge Boys are currently working on, Joe said, “we are playing over 150 dates a year, everyone’s feeling good, singing good, we are playing our 28th annual Christmas tour which will start in November and we are back in the studio recording a new album. What’s interesting on this album is that we are

The Brumley Gospel Sing is a legacy that continues to bring Albert E. Brumley’s songs to new generations. The 49th Annual Brumley Gospel Sing comes to Tulsa August 2-5 at the Mabee Center located at 7777 S. Lewis Ave. Tickets start at $25 and are available online at brumleymusic. com, mabeecenter.com or by calling 1(800) 678-1353.

The Oak Ridge Boys have a strong Tulsa tie in that their longtime manger Jim Halsey is located here. Joe said, “we call Jim our Godfather, he has been a major spoke in this wheel since 1975.” Many of southern gospel’s most popular artists will be returning for the event this year. Opening the show on Aaron Wilburn Wednesday are Dailey & Vincent who were recently inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. FAB LAB TULSA’S 2017 MINI MAKER FAIRE CELEBRATES THE “MAKER MINDSET” BY KRISTI ROE-OWEN

ttention DIYers, creatives, lifehackers, craftistas, Doc Emmett Browns and Tim “The Tool Man” Taylors--put down that Dremel and step away from the glue gun for this very important PSA. The amazing team over at the Hardesty Center for Fab Lab Tulsa have teamed up with Make: (a zine for makers) to offer Tulsans the chance to participate in what they call “the Greatest Show and Tell in Oklahoma”: Tulsa Mini Maker Faire. If you’re not familiar with Fab Lab Tulsa, it is an MIT-chartered nonprofit organization situated in Kendall Whittier Neighborhood that gives Tulsa and northeastern Oklahoma the opportunity to interact with digital fabrication and rapid prototyping machinery they might not otherwise have access to for the purpose of creating personal projects, developing new inventions, designing new products, or simply learning computer-aided software and hardware (think laser cutters, 3D printers, and super cool milling machines). Executive Director Nathan Pritchett explained, “They’re the types of machines that people generally don’t have access to or can’t afford

to have access to on their own.” Makers can be seen creating cosplay pieces, medical prototypes, art pieces, signs for their startups, working machines, and--this is important--every manner of geekery from a giant Dalek to light sabers to tiny Millennium Falcons. If you have an idea and can use the software, they have the fabrication tools for you to make it a reality. The 5th Annual Tulsa Mini Maker Faire is Oklahoma’s version of an award-winning, family-friendly event geared towards celebrating the “maker mindset”-- as Make: CEO Dale Dougherty explained in a recent TED Talk, “All of us are makers. We’re born makers. We have this ability to make things, to grasp things with our hands.” “It’s really about empowering people,” Pritchett emphasized, “encouraging people to be more than just consumers, but also be makers. There really is no stereotypical maker, other than this DIY attitude, willingness to do it themselves, to learn, and to create on their own.” In addition to many hands-on exhibits, the fair will include stage presentations such as “Radical Reactions” chemistry experiments,

drone building, and an audiencewide virtual reality experience. But the Tulsa Mini Maker Faire and maker mindset isn’t just for the engineers and programmers. It is literally about and for anyone who creates anything. Exhibitors include artists, crafters, tinkerers, inventors, entrepreneurs, schools, universities, clubs, startups and businesses. Interested makers can apply to exhibit through July 31st. The fair will be held Saturday, August 26th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Expo Square’s Central Park Hall. Admission is free to the public. Head over to Facebook, where you can RSVP to the event page at facebook. com/makerfairetulsa or sign up as a maker at tulsa.makerfaire.com.

SELF-CARE AT VIM 360

BY KRISTI ROE-OWEN

V

im 360 is much more than a Pilates studio. More accurately, it is a hub of well-being at the intersection of mind, body, and spirit. With a practice centered in mindfulness and body positivity, Vim is a life-affirming way to augment a basic healthy lifestyle or even the management of painful ongoing conditions. Many of Vim 360’s clients come with a clear goal in mind: to be able to play on the floor with their grandchildren; to be able to lift their three-year-old daughter onto their shoulders; to have the stamina to walk around all day on vacation; to build strength and stability to make sure a simple fall doesn’t cause serious, lasting damage; to be able to dance at their own wedding. “One lady said, ‘I want to be able to pick up my three-year-old and let him watch the popcorn pop in the microwave,” explained Teresa McIlroy, a licensed physical

therapist and the studio’s owner. Clients work with members of the team to develop an individualized health plan based on their experience, lifestyle, personal goals, physical ability, and unique needs. At the heart of these plans, Vim 360’s experts help match clients with their ideal fitness classes and activities. After establishing a wellness strategy, clients are matched with classes most appropriate to their strength, abilities, and comfort levels. Many classes are offered only to clients over 55, and with class sizes up to 6 students, participating seniors can expect to meet a handful of folks with similar physical capabilities. Students often build strong connections with classmates, sharing their struggles and successes, support, and even recipes and family photos. Community and heart are at the core of the Vim ethos. Vim 360’s team builds fitness classes around this ethos and fosters the growth of new connections to help Vimmers maintain their healthy lifestyles. “Our clients get good care, not just a workout,” explained Beth Cassody, PTA. If a trainer notes a client’s need during a session, he or she shares this with the team to make sure the client is fully cared for. Similar to physical therapy, a trainer might make a modification or give the client an

exercise to work on strengthening the muscle and restoring balance. Vimmers are offered a wide range of opportunities to build strength and balance, including all levels of Pilates instruction on both mats and reformers, yoga, barre, and tai chi. For those who might find all of this a little intimidating, put your mind at ease--Vim 360 specializes in offering gentle, simple introductions for all levels of strength and health. The Vim 360 team are experts at working with seniors and physical disabilities. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis all find relief in the body positive care of Vim 360. At Vim 360, self-care is everything, which means wellness coaching can also mean a trip to the grocery store and pantry makeover. Vim 360 widely surpasses the definition of a traditional studio with its offerings. REMEMBERING

Frank Riesinger, WW II Vet and Organizer with a monument to Veterans at the BA Military History Center.

BY AMY BETH DOBBINS

We heard the commotion. Cars were blowing their horns. Everybody started throwing ticker tape out of the windows like confetti. It looked like snow.” On August 14, 1945, young soldier, Frank Riesinger, was on a short leave in his hometown, Tulsa, before being re-stationed at Scott Air Force Base in

V-J DAY

Illinois when the news came that Japan had surrendered, ending World War II. Feeling that V-J Day had not received sufficient local recognition, Frank set out to organize a celebration. With the help of a handful of veterans and the invaluable support and financial backing of the Military History Center and AVB Bank, V-J Day will be properly recognized and celebrated at the third-annual ceremony this year. “AVB Bank is proud to serve the many men and women that have and do serve our military. We are honored to participate in the celebration of the end of World War II… and we pay tribute to their service and our fallen heroes,” explains Kelli Sowell, Executive Vice President of AVB Bank. Thomas P. Mancino, Brigadier General, U.S. Army (retired) serves as the President of the Board of Directors for the Military History Center and will act as Master of Ceremonies. The event will include patriotic music led by the accomplished Stephen Goforth and Maggie Bond, Miss Tulsa 2017, as well as a flag presentation and recognition of

all veterans or active military members that have sacrificed in defense of this country. Master Sgt. Paul Andert, U.S. Army (retired), will be a featured speaker. Andert fought in seven major campaigns in North Africa and Europe with the 2nd Armored Division, earning the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Crox de guerre. He is also an author and founder of All Veterans Association, Inc. Sr. Master Sgt. Dan Snow, U.S. Army (retired), an associate of Congressman Jim Bridenstine, will also be a featured speaker. Everyone is invited to join in the 72nd Anniversary Celebration of V-J Day on Saturday, August 12, on the lawn of the Military History Center, 112 N. Main Street, Broken Arrow. The ceremony will kick off at 1:30 p.m. The museum will open its doors at 10 a.m., however, and admission is free on that day. “It was the greatest war the world has ever known,” recalls Frank. “No other country has ever done so much as we did during World War II. Every American should attend some celebration.”

White River

GRILL YOUR OWN WHITE RIVER FISH

Fish Market

BY KRISTI ROE-OWEN

W

hite River Fish Market is one of those Tulsa staples folks recommend to friends and family when they stop through from out of state. Understated and casual, White River offers patrons the opportunity to dine in their market-style lunchroom, where guests order at a counter and wait to be served. Recently, they added a second location in Broken Arrow. White River has been the go-to place to pick up fresh fish flown in from the coasts and South America since the 1930s with a reputation so solid local sushi chefs rely on their fare for fresh fish when they can’t wait for a shipment. The Broken Arrow spot maintains the lowkey vibe of its older sister, giving as close to the feel of a coastal fish market as you’re probably going to get in a landlocked city. Counters of fresh fish line the store on one side, replete with vast offerings: a large,

white halibut next to heaps of thick orange roughy, tilapia, frog legs, mahi mahi, sea bass, peeled and deveined shrimp, and the like. Rows of hot sauce and Lee Lover’s Clover Honey line the countertop with nononsense signage for pricing above on the wall. Staff were straight-up; they offered professional, solid service in the same no-frills way they serve their food, which is fine because the food truly speaks for itself. White River portions on the generous side, and all meals come with two sides, so order accordingly. The Academy Award for best performance on a plate goes to the onion rings. That heaping pile of onion rings was the very definition of food joy. The onions were thickly cut, the batter light and sweet but not too crumbly. The hush puppies were also top notch. Sweet, crispy, just a little spicy, but moist inside almost the way cake is. In a world of dry hush puppies, White River has achieved texture perfection with theirs. The meal also came with a side

of stewed pinto beans, tasty but standard fare. The grilled halibut was beautiful, perfectly seasoned, served with a side of clarified butter. The seasoning was not too heavy-handed, which is important because the fish quality speaks for itself at the market. The quality was excellent; it was clearly very fresh fish. We would be remiss if we did not finish out the meal with a slice of pie and a piping hot cup of coffee. The buttermilk pie is a lemon zest recipe, which was unexpected but extremely tasty, served with a generous heap of whipped cream. The texture was creamier than some. In a town filled with delicious buttermilk pie (Stutt’s and Wilson’s both offer phenomenal recipes), it was nice to taste a recipe that was not a clone but had something different to offer. At about $16-$20 per person, this destination is all about the food experience. If you consider yourself a foodie or epicure, the best way to experience White River might just be to order several meals and dig in family style. Just don’t forget to order onion rings and possibly write a sonnet about how amazing they are later on.

If you stop into White River Fish Market for one of their fresh orange roughy or halibut fillets, you want to grill that fish to succulent, flaky perfection. But overcooking a fish can literally happen in seconds, which is why we’ve put together this handy guide to grilling perfection.

USE ALUMINUM FOIL: Catfish

Place on top of foil (packet will make it greasy). Grill 4 minutes each side.

Halibut

Place in aluminum foil packet. Grill 5-6 minutes each side.

Tilapia

Place in aluminum foil packet. Grill 7 minutes each side.

USE GRILL BASKET: Red Snapper

Grill 7 minutes each side.

PLACE DIRECTLY ON GRILL:

Mahi Mahi

Grill 4 minutes each side.

Tuna

Grill 4 minutes each side.

Swordfish

Grill 5-6 minutes each side.

Salmon

10-20 minutes depending on size.

Frog Legs

Use skewers. Grill 1 ½ minutes each side.

INSPIRING SENIORS BY LORRIE WARD

…The preservation of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” We hear these words from the Declaration of Independence often this time of year—so often that we sometimes take these “rights, inherent and inalienable” that Thomas Jefferson wrote about for granted. But as we grow older, these rights often feel out of our reach as time seems to whittle away at the quality of our lives, taking away liberty of movement and putting a damper on any true pursuit of happiness. Carol Carter and the staff at LIFE Senior Services dedicate their time and efforts to making sure this is not the only choice for seniors. The mission of LIFE Senior Services is to promote a lifestyle of active aging, lifelong learning, positive life outlook and safety for seniors. That’s why they are partnering with Detective Debbie Crisp and the Tulsa Police Department’s Senior Safety Unit to host the 2017 Senior Safety and Lifestyle Fair, July 18, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Central Park Hall at Expo Square.

2017 SENIOR SAFETY AND LIFESTYLE FAIR Presented by LIFE Senior Services and Tulsa Police Department’s Senior Safety Unit TUESDAY, JULY 18 9 A.M. - 3 P.M. CENTRAL PARK HALL AT EXPO SQUARE

d d for f adults d l This event, designed 45+, seniors, and family caregivers, will host over 100 exhibitors representing housing, healthcare, social services, lifelong learning, volunteer opportunities, charitable organizations and a select group of crafters and artisans. The Oklahoma Healthy Aging Alliance (OHAI) and OU Physicians will provide free health screenings including tests for blood pressure, balance and memory, among others. Attendees will also have the opportunity to “ask a geriatrician” with Dr. John Carment, OU Physicians, from noon to 3 p.m. There will be several fitness demonstrations to inspire an active lifestyle, including line dancing, Zumba Gold, and tai chi. Because pets can greatly contribute to the physical and emotional well-being of seniors, attendees may want to visit with the Paw Pals therapy dogs from the Tulsa Dog Training Club-or take home a new pet from the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), who will bring a few furry friends in need of adoption. Also, AAA Oklahoma will host a CarFit program. Space is limited for this clinic, so preregistration is required. A Special Goodbye for Your Family Pet Owner, Angel Askins, and Crematory Assistant, Christie Freeland want to help you celebrate the life of your pet.

BY AMY BETH DOBBINS

G

rowing up on a farm in Arkansas, Angel Askins, Owner of Angel’s Pet Funeral Home & Crematory, learned a lot about animals. Askins, however, did not own an animal as a pet until adulthood: “A pet was viewed as another mouth to feed, and they had to earn their keep on the farm. We couldn’t play with my dad’s hunting dog because, then, it wouldn’t hunt.” Though grateful for early life lessons on the farm, Askins holds a different view of the animals

in her life now. Her two Bernese Mountain Dogs are family. And so it is with most people and their pets according to Askins. There is a palatable grief that comes with the death of a pet. Askins estimates that seventy percent of pet owners wish to acknowledge or memorialize the passing in some way. “… I genuinely care about them and their pet…and I recognize that their grief is real,” she explains. Askins had worked in human funeral service continually from the time she was seventeen, beginning in her small hometown and continuing after she relocated to Tulsa in 1992. She attended the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service and, later, earned a Bachelors in Biology. She made the transition to animal funeral services, opening the doors to Angel’s Pet Funeral Home & Crematory, approximately a year and a half ago. A variety of services and

products is offered to help an owner memorialize his pet, and prearrangement is always an option. Cremation for pets, ranging in size from a hamster to a large dog, is available, and the ashes are returned to an owner within 48 hours. Urns, jewelry pieces, garden stones, blownglass containers and markers are available for purchase at a variety of price points. Customized engraving is sometimes a meaningful addition and is offered onsite. Alternatively, if an owner lives in a location which legally allows for the burial of a pet, caskets may be purchased. According to Askins, every pet deserves dignity upon its passing. For this reason, the facility offers a place for special goodbyes. There are two viewing rooms as well as a chapel if a memorial service is desired. “Every dog or cat [pet] has a story,” explains Askins, and Angel’s Pet Funeral Home & Crematory is helping pet owners tell it.
