The Bixby Green Corn Festival Returns! BY CHRISTY STEPHENS
E
ven the mildest of winter seasons can leave us longing for spring and summer; to be able to put away the heavy coats and jackets, the chilly weather sweaters and boots, and to be outside in the sunshine and the greenery during the warm months. This is the time of year that people like most to spend time with family and friends in the sun drenched outdoors and is especially delightful to enjoy at a festival. One such event to look forward to is the Bixby Green Corn Festival, held annual every fourth Thursday, Friday and Saturday in June. “This is the 48th year for the Optimist Club of Bixby [a local group dedicated to the improvement of youth of the community] to be sponsoring the event,” says Kevin Dean, Chairman. “The event itself has been around since about 1948, when Clyde Miller, a local farmer, started it after a very fruitful harvest.” Held in downtown Bixby, the festival offers food, arts and crafts, carnival rides and games, contests and pageants for three different youth age groups, vying for the title of Little Miss and Mister Bixby.
Musical entertainment is varied; Thursday night is Gospel Night, and local church singers will perform. On Friday night, Travis Bond and the Rebel Souls and Bottoms Up will take the stage; and Saturday will feature the Riverside Rebellion Band, with Danny Davis and the Dirt Road Detours closing out the night. 4

Spring Cleaning! Great Ways to Keep Your Home Safe and Smelling Great
W
inter has finally faded away and spring colors are in bloom. While it might look restorative outside your home, your chimney and dryer vents may still be dealing with a gloomy, cold weather hangover. A good spring cleaning is an opportunity to refresh your home and enable you to enjoy all the benefits of Oklahoma’s seasonal change. Here are a few reasons why spring cleaning is important: • Breathing – Seems like a simple issue considering it’s a necessity of life. But when your home is lingering of creosote and ash the air becomes stagnant, and your respiratory health suffers. A solid spring chimney cleaning improves the air quality of your home and makes you feel better. With a clean smelling chimney, your mood will improve and you’ll be open to welcoming visitors. • Safety - Approximately 23,000 chimney fires occur every year, causing nearly a billion dollars in damage, and potentially the loss of lives. Having your chimney professionally cleaned annually will help you avoid a disaster. • As for your dryer vent, lint doesn’t Left: For over 43 years, Black Hat Cleaning Services owner David Harris, Sr. has been serving N.E. Oklahoma.

overall health in the home. Chimney sweep services, as well as dryer duct cleaning, are essential for fire prevention, and air duct cleaning is vital for the air quality inside the home, ensuring a healthy breathing environment. These maintenance services also help keep your home smelling nice too. Fire burning chimneys are recommended to be cleaned depending on wood-burning capacity, with a standard recommendation of professional sweep every 3 to 4 ricks of wood burned. Gas burning fireplaces only need to be cleaned every 15 to 20 years. “If you’re not sure if your chimney needs cleaning, at least have it inspected,” David said. “If you’ve never had it cleaned, clean it!” Dryer duct cleaning is sometimes overlooked by homeowners but should be a top priority regarding fire safety. Many home fires are caused every year by the lint that gets trapped within the pipes and, once ignited, can quickly burn throughout a home. “Dryer lint is the best thing you can use to start a campfire,” said David. “It is highly flammable. You don’t want that trapped in your dryer vent as a fire hazard.” David’s sound advice for homeowners is only a small part of the comprehensive service provided by Black Hat. Honesty and integrity are at the forefront of his business practice and what his customers see when they see him in his top hat. “My customers know that they can trust me to be honest, and take care of them, give them peace of mind.” Over the years, just as David’s hat has gotten taller, the services have evolved to become more efficient, time-saving and thorough. Chimney cleaning can take up to 45 minutes. David loves his work and the people he serves. “This is my 43rd year in business with many more years ahead.”

We have expanded upon this by patient request and will be including two new amazing dermal fillers for the line of savings: Radiesse and Sculptra.” The staff at the BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center are very professional and knowledgeable, and at the same time friendly and welcoming; and the variety of products, programs and services all contribute to the continuing success of their clients’ wellness needs. “Our weight loss programs differ from any other physiciansupervised program in the level of care and attention each patient receives. When we first started 12 years ago, we began with one standard weight loss program that fit most people’s needs; but since then, we have expanded dramatically! We now offer various plans from our original hCG and Lipotropic plans to now include things like keto plans, IV drip therapy, InBody analysis and our newest plan, Semaglutide. In the most recent study, patients will lose on average over 12 percent of their body weight over six months; and not just that, they are keeping the pounds off for good. “Additionally, all our plans may have a “base package,” but in the end look very different for each patient because we are constantly working with you to get your individual needs met. So, we may all start at the same point, but some patients may do better when we add in an appetite suppressant that we can then both prescribe and dispense at the same time through our drive-thru pharmacy. We have a team of dedicated medical professionals partnering with our patients to help everyone achieve their individual goals. “No matter who the patient is,

The Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society is dedicated to encouraging interest in collecting rocks, minerals, fossils and artifacts, and do so by providing educational programs for schools and adult groups at any time of the year. Watch for distracting elements. 2. Look around at the elements captured in the frame. Novices focus their attention on their subject but miss the element in the shot that will cause them regret after that special moment passes never to be captured again. Look for overlooked distracting elements. In the example photo, the girl is framed correctly on the thirds line. A secondary element is also included, the pots of flowers, and even placed on the opposite third line, but because the photographer was mentally focusing on these rules, he/she didn’t

The building will look much more attractive, however, if the photographer simply walks around the corner of the building to catch two sides. The building has dimension while appearing larger and more attractive. 3. Take photos of people using the same principles as with buildings. Capturing an angle provides a more flattering look. Leading lines to subject. 5. Viewers look at pictures sequentially. That means they take in elements one at a time while their eyes move around the image. Photographers can take photos that purposely plan where the viewers’ eyes move. One way to do that is to use a technique called leading lines. Use an element that provides a line – a railroad track, a path, a road or a fence line – to guide the viewers’ eyes to the focal point. Don’t leave them with leading lines only that line is like the bridge that leads to nowhere. Instead place the subject, the focal point, at the end of the leading lines.

How about a baseball player taking a swing and the photographer caught an image of the ball leaving the bat? Care must be taken so that these photos are not ruined by the blur of the action. If a camera is not fast enough to stop this action, better leave this one alone. 7. Lastly, most photos are taken from standing height. Not good. If an interesting angle is desired, simply changed the physical stance. Try lying on the ground and shooting upward. How about shooting from a step ladder and shooting downward? Now, it’s time to say, “CHEESE!”

VALUE NEWS BIXBY, JENKS & SAPULPA JUNE 2022 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM
klahoma hosts many festivals that are praise-worthy; and one of the biggest festivals is Rooster Days in Broken Arrow. The annual Rooster Days Festival dates have recently changed – the previously announced dates took place in May, but the new dates are now June 9 through June 12. Other changes, all progressive, are also occurring and add to the overall enjoyment of the festivities. “We have transitioned to a Cashless system this year,” explains Amber Hinkle, Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce Events Director. “This means our guests will not have to stop and purchase food tickets, as they have had to do in years past. This year, they can use their personal debit and credit cards at all our food vendor locations, without having to first stop and purchase food tickets. If we have guests who prefer to use cash, we will have a “Cash to Card Coop,” where they can exchange their cash for a gift card that can be used on-site with our food vendors. We hope this allows attendees to get to the fun faster than ever before!” Rooster Days is a long standing and important tradition to the city of Broken Arrow and indeed, many people within the state go out of their way to attend. The festival offers indoor and outdoor vendors, crowd favorite food stands, and entertainment in various forms. Musical acts are highly anticipated; and the change in dates for the festival has not affected the lineup. “We were fortunate that all of our previously announced musical guests were available for these new dates, so our lineup remains the same,” asserts Hinkle. Musicians performing at Rooster Days includes Travis Kidd, The Crowe Band, the Red Dirt Rangers, Braden Jamison and the Neon Strangers, and Weston Horn and the Hush. “We are thrilled to be able to provide the Broken Arrow and surrounding communities with new ride options,

new promotions and an updated midway experience,” enthuses Jennifer Conway, president and CEO of the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce. “We are looking forward to a great relationship with Wagner’s Carnival and all the new amenities and promotions they will provide to the Rooster Days festival.” Well-known as the longest running festival in Oklahoma, Rooster Days is a family fun even for all ages. Attendees always look forward to making delightful new memories every year; the festival always has activities, food
and music for all ages, and the Rooster Days Parade always a great favorite enjoyed by all. Summer Fun with Jana Jae Events The American Heritage Music Festival, The Cajun Festival and Fiddle Camp
BY CHRISTY STEPHENS
G
rand Lake has always been a popular destination for Oklahomans in the summer season, and Grove has three events every year that are eagerly anticipated: The American Heritage Music Festival, Cajun Fest and Jana Jae’s Fiddle Camp. Jana Jae is an American country and bluegrass fiddler, well-known for being a regular performer on Hee-Haw, where she met and married co-star Buck Owens. She continues to perform with several bands, as well as continuing solo work, and has performed with many of the best known performers in country music. She is internationally recognized, and the city of Grove is proud to have such a dynamic and talented performer within the community. American Heritage Music Festival The American Heritage Music Festival is a long-standing one, with many more to come. “This is the 25th anniversary of the American Heritage Music Festival!” Jana Jae enthuses. “It all started when Grove wanted to have a fiddle contest, but they had no idea what to do…at first it was held in the blazing sun downtown on a flatbed, which is not good for those precious instruments… but everyone wanted to have a bigger, better one! So, they asked me to get involved, and we’ve enjoyed changing and improving the festival, and keep it going even through the Covid years. “The Chamber offered to help us during that tough time, and this will be the third year we have partnered. They share their beautiful outdoor stage, sound and lights, and we put on a super show for them! We’re at host campground of Snider’s Camp on June 9, Thursday evening, with good food trucks and tons of entertainment on stage; Friday, June 10, we will be at Wolf Creek Park for the actual Grand Lake National Fiddle Contest all day and all evening. We wind up Saturday with groups busking all over town, which is a lot of fun. It’s a super weekend with the whole town involved in festive family activities.” The American Heritage Music Festival
takes place June 9, 10th and 11th at Snider’s Camp and Wolf Creek Park in Grove, Oklahoma. Cajun Fest July brings a little bit of Mardi Gras fun to Grove and Grand Lake! The arts, crafts and music festival will be held on July 2, bands will begin playing at 10:00a.m. and will continue to romp and rock throughout the day. Hosted by Jana Jae and the nonprofit organizations Grand Lake festivals, it is a carnival of a day and one that can be enjoyed by the entire family. “Cajun music has always been great fun, and we discovered how popular Cajun cuisine is right here in Oklahoma, too,” says Jana. “This is always a blast, with an authentic and very popular Cajun band from Louisiana, Cajun beads, a Mardi Gras party ambience, lots of vendors, and a very special headliner back by popular demand, the Ragin’ Cajun himself, Doug Kershaw! “This will be held in the air-conditioned Civic Center; plenty of room for dancing to the music and enjoying food and family fun as we celebrate our country’s birthday and cultural diversity. We have patriotic music also, and crooner Clint Walker can sing everything from Roy Orbison to Lee Greenwood’s ‘I’m Proud to Be an American. Folks come decked out in patriotic outfits, lake attire or dressed for Mardi Gras – it all works together for more fun.” Lovely hand-crafted jewelry and Native American art, and a variety of crafts will be on display to view and buy; and in addition to the wonderful spread of Cajun food, more traditional and “every day” food such as hamburgers and hot-dogs will be available. Also contributing to the organization of Cajun Fest is the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Tickets for Cajun Fest are $10, and kids enter for free! Jana Jae’s Fiddle Camp & Music Festival If you want to learn how to play, it is always helpful to learn from the best! Music is obviously Jana’s passion; and it

comes through both in her playing and her teaching. Joining her are many notable musicians, to learn from, see, enjoy watching and listening, and with whom to play. “The Fiddle Camp is my opportunity to teach and share the music that has enriched my life so much,” declares Jana. “We have 20 excellent instructors for all ages, all levels and all acoustic instruments! Not just for fiddles – we have guitar, mandolin, viola, cello, bass, djembe drums, rhythm spoons, bones, even ukulele! Also, music arranging, how to overcome stage fright, how to play in a band, how to improvise, how to play in a contest, and more! “Coaching is in small groups according to interest, level and age…we’ll have pros sharing with attendees. So much fun learning goes on, it’s my favorite festival of the year!” Daytime events (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), which include workshops, Master demonstrations and group sessions will be at the Grove Civic Center. Evening events are as follows: Friday evening, beginning at 6 p.m, includes a barbecue dinner and kick-off party, with bluegrass friends and jamming; Saturday evening, also beginning at 6 p.m., features a fish fry dinner, an open stage with jam sessions; Sunday evening wraps up with an open stage, jam session informal Pickin’ Party. Schedules and registrations are available online, www.grandlakefestivals.com.
