Teaching Teens and Parents About Auto Care: Have We Prepared Ourselves or Our Children? Bob Moore Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram of Tulsa’s service department invites you to schedule your free car maintenance training session.

W

hen was the last time you checked your tire pressure or changed a tire? Checked your own fluid levels and oil? Learning a few simple skills can help you avoid a roadside bind. I think most of us agree that our vehicle is one of our largest investments that are important to our livelihood and independence. So why haven’t we done a better job teaching ourselves and children about taking care of our vehicles? We asked Cliff Koger, Service and Parts Director at Bob Moore Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram of Tulsa (CDJR). “Our lives are busy and we take for granted that our car is going to work

properly all by itself and neglect the small amount of time it takes to oversee its basic needs. Our busy everyday life has left us lean on time to learn some of the basic skills and tips to save time, money and be safer on the streets,” said Koger. “I have been in the automotive business all my life and considered basic car care common sense when in reality that isn’t always the case, especially with all the new advancements in the auto industry. Trying to teach our kids about something we know little about can be daunting. It would be like me trying to teach mine about algebra or chemistry. Although I know enough about the two subjects to use them in everyday life, I’m certainly not well versed to the point of teaching it to my kids. I would much rather depend on the experts (teachers) to teach those things to my kids.” That got Koger thinking…he relies on teachers to teach his kids about the things that will make them more successful in life, so why shouldn’t “We” as “Auto Experts” in our field do the

same things for kids to help them be successful and productive adults? Our world has become so much about ‘what’s in it for me’ that we have forgotten to be kind to others and most of all HELP OTHERS. With that being said, I have spoken to all my staff about the idea of a program to help parents and teens. All became excited and welcomed the idea of teaching others,” Koger expressed. His staff conversation evolved into a new program being offered about teaching basic auto

maintenance skills, free of charge at Bob Moore CDJR of Tulsa. It is designed as an introduction to the fundamentals necessary to keep your vehicle well maintained and safe in the long run; and pointed out that the program is not designed to teach people how to do everything on their vehicle. “We want to teach you about things such as checking your oil, changing a spare, checking tire pressure, and basic necessary skills that will help build your self confidence and reduce the need to depend on someone else when the need arises.” How do you get started? The schedule is open and to register all you need to do is give Cliff Koger a call at (918) 796-3915. The individual one-on-one (one person with one technician) program will take about one hour. Bob Moore CDJR of Tulsa is located at 4627 S. Memorial Dr. in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Myths and Facts About Hormone Replacement Therapy Every Woman Should Know Myth #1: Hormone replacement causes cancer. Fact:

The idea that HRT causes cancer is perhaps the most common myth. This misconception is based on an older, flawed study. Although it’s true that receiving more hormones than your body requires can raise the risk of certain types of cancers, HRT itself doesn’t cause cancer. Therapy with hormone replacement does not cause cancer in healthy adults with no history of hormone-sensitive cancer.

Myth #2: Hormone replacement is only beneficial for severe symptoms. Fact: Many women believe that HRT only

addresses severe symptoms. The truth is you don’t have to wait for your symptoms to become severe to start HRT. Therapy is beneficial for less severe symptoms that may disrupt your daily life. HRT is effective for relieving hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, and other symptoms related to hormone imbalance.

found that women taking estrogen-only HRT were less likely to develop heart disease.

Myth #5: HRT isn’t for women who enter menopause early. Fact: Women typically enter menopause around the age

of 50. However, some women experience early menopause, and for these women, HRT may help reduce the risk of heart disease and protect against osteoporosis.

Myth #6: There’s only one type of HRT. Fact: You may be surprised to know that there are several types of HRT. Women can choose from oral to topical formulations. Types of HRT can be used alone or in combination to best treat your symptoms and balance your hormones. Myth #7: Menopausal symptoms are a rite of passage you must experience. Fact: You don’t have to suffer through

Myth #3: HRT isn’t helpful after menopause. Fact:

the uncomfortable symptoms of menopause. Although symptoms like hot flashes weight and night sweats were once thought of as a rite of passage, these symptoms can have a significant impact on your daily life. HRT is proven to be the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms. You can go through menopause without major discomfort thanks to hormone replacement.

Myth #4: HRT increases heart disease risk. Fact: An older, flawed study reported an increased risk in heart disease in women taking HRT, leading to a myth that persists. Subsequent studies reported no such association. In fact, studies have

Even after the major changes of menopause take place, hormone imbalance can continue. Women experiencing postmenopausal symptoms can benefit from HRT. During the years after menopause, symptoms such as hot flashes tend to ease. However, due to lower estrogen levels, postmenopausal women can continue to experience uncomfortable symptoms.

Driveways Built to Last by LCI BY MACY GOODNIGHT

O

ne of the most under appreciated parts of a home may very well be the driveway. We walk (and drive) all over them! Incidentally, most people won’t notice how important this facet really is, until it’s in need of repair. Kalan Paul, owner of LCI Concrete, specializes in driveway replacement and repair, and is the expert to call when a driveway needs attention. His extensive level of knowledge and experience is solid with over 15 years in the business. LCI is one of the most trusted names in the industry, with over 750 projects in their portfolio. They have an A+ rating with the BBB and the LCI team has over 70 years of combined experience. What exactly makes a wellbuilt driveway? According to Kalan, “When it comes to driveway

replacement materials, preparation and workmanship top the list. You don’t have to look very far to see crumbling driveways, and replacing broken concrete can update a home 20+ years, while adding curb appeal!” One of the most important elements that adds to the strength in their construction is the use of rebar. Their newly replaced driveways are built to last a lifetime. When seeking a driveway contractor, Kalan offers some concrete advice. “Look for experience,” he said. “You need to ask if you can see at least 5 of their recent jobs, and ask if you can speak to the homeowners.” LCI can provide a list of 100 homeowners that will provide references and honest praise of their workmanship. “Even if you don’t follow through, the contractor should be able to provide you with this information.”

VALUE NEWS BIXBY, JENKS & SAPULPA MARCH 2021 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

A contractor should always be able to provide current insurance as well. LCI is bonded and insured. Speed is also a major factor in choosing the right contractor for concrete replacement and repair. Removing and replacing 50,000lbs and beyond of material requires a great deal of effort! Most homeowners appreciate being able to utilize their driveway as quickly as possible, and LCI considers this a top priority. “We lead the way as a well-oiled machine,” said Kalan. “In most cases, we show up early, work hard, remove and replace driveways within one day!” Most projects can be completed in one to two days. Their business philosophy focuses on three major points: customer satisfaction, quality workmanship and minimizing a homeowner’s downtime. Driveway replacement can add to the value of the home, and is a good investment. “I don’t think anyone would lose money replacing a driveway,” Kalan said. “It’s amazing what it can do for

the look of a home.” Homeowners will want to consider driveway replacement not only for aesthetics, but functionality. Physical hazards, such as holes or cracks will not only cause damage to a vehicle, but can be dangerous to walk or play on. Spring is the perfect time to plan new home projects, and with recent extreme winter weather in the area, driveway repair will be essential for many homeowners this season. Damaged concrete will only become more severe and costly with time, without attention. For more information on LCI Concrete’s services, visit their website at www.lcitulsa. com.

Pest Prevention is Peace of Mind Mother Nature’s Pest Control Offers Assurance BY MACY GOODNIGHT

W

ith the arrival of spring and warmer temperatures, destructive termites begin to swarm in masses, seeking to secure the survival of their species. They are indiscriminate on where they colonize, and the grander their numbers, the greater the damage they can cause. Shelia Disler, Vice President at Mother Nature’s, compares their situation to a scene similar to Game of Thrones. “Swarm season is mating time for future kings and queens,

and they are working to build new colonies,” she said. “They are very social insects and there’s a lot of drama.” Family owned and operated since 1979, Mother Nature’s Pest and Lawn has been working to help homeowners ‘battle the bugs’, while evolving their business into the most comprehensive preventive and remedial service available in the industry. Pests in the home cannot only be extremely uncomfortable, but left untreated can be extraordinarily costly. As the largest pest control company in Oklahoma,

Rather than wait for problems to arise, many of their services offer assurance with prevention. For termite control, there is nothing better than Sentricon. The pest control company is the only one in the state to use the cutting edge, exceptional termite control technology. “We usually start to see termite swarms in March to April, when it starts to warm up,” Shelia said. “The Sentricon system protects 24/7 and provides a protective barrier around the home.” The system works by way of a perimeter of densely baited points around the house or building. The termites that take the bait transport it to the queen, causing her demise, and thereby eliminating the entire colony. Statistically, an acre of land could be occupied by 12 to 15 colonies, and any home in a neighborhood could have 2 to 3 colonies in the

A Taste of

Nayarit, Mexico BY SHANNON SMITH

18 |

VALUE NEWS BIXBY, JENKS & SAPULPA MARCH 2021 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

I

spent the first two weeks of this new year in the state of Nayarit, Mexico, located on the Pacific coast, just north of Puerto Vallarta. Most people travel to Puerto Vallarta to enjoy the beaches and perfect weather, and I did my share of that. But, the main reason I went was to meet Chef Alondra Maldronado, a cookbook author who has lived her entire life in the state of Nayarit. Alondra and I cooked for four days, where she taught me about the history of the ingredients and recipes that have been passed down since the Spanish conquest in the late 1500s. The Spanish brought spices, wheat, sugar and pork to Mexico, which are now a huge part of Mexican cuisine. Many Filipinos and Chinese traveled on Spanish ships as slaves, and made their homes in Mexico. The Chinese taught the fishermen how to dry shrimp for preservation, and today some of the best dried shrimp is from Nayarit. Alondra and I made dried shrimp tamales and ceviche, using recipes that have been shared for centuries. One of the main ingredients in Mexican cooking is chiles, both fresh and dried. They are used in many different ways, and each variety adds a different element of flavor and heat. The most common way chiles are used is in salsa (sauce), which is prepared every day in Mexican kitchens, and used to accompany nearly every dish. Alondra and I made at least 10 different salsas, including fresh, smoked and fire-roasted. We also stuffed poblano chiles with local cheese, and dried ancho chiles with steamed shrimp.

After four days of cooking, Alondra took me on a drive up the coast to her hometown of Tepic. We spent the entire day stopping at beach cafes, eating ceviche, oysters, and redfish cooked over open fires in the sand. In Tepic we visited a small cheese factory where we sampled three different cheeses made from the milk of mountain cows. We spent another day cooking in Alondra’s apartment, preparing refried beans and homemade corn tortillas to dip in charred tomato salsa. Cooking with Alondra filled me with so much knowledge and appreciation for the ingredients and efforts that go into making the traditional foods of Mexico. The importance of salsa, the simplicity of ingredients, and the stories behind Alondra’s recipes gives me a deeper appreciation for not only Mexican food in general, but particularly the food from the state of Nayarit. Like most countries in the world, the food and traditions change from corner to corner, making each place within special and unique. It is the same in Nayarit, but I not only gained knowledge in its food, I gained a new and dear friend named Alondra.

Stuffed Poblano with Red Chile Sauce - Serves 4 Red Chile Sauce: • 2 dried ancho chiles • 4 dried guajillo chiles (or dried California chiles) • 2 garlic cloves • 1/2 cup onion, chopped • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 4 poblano chiles • 8 ounces Chihuahua Cheese (or other good melting cheese, such as Monterrey Jack or Fontina), cut into four (or more) 1/2” slices • 1 cup all purpose flour • 2 eggs • 1/4 cup vegetable oil • 1/4 cup queso fresco (or other crumbling cheese, such as Feta) • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped To make red chiles sauce, remove the stems and seeds from the ancho chiles and guajillo chiles and discard. Place the chiles in a bowl and cover with 3 cups of hot water. Soak for 30 minutes. Put the chiles and the soaking water into the bowl of a blender. Add the garlic, onion, and salt. Blend until smooth. Pour into a saucepan and bring to a simmer for ten minutes. Remove from heat and set aside. To roast the poblanos, light a gas cooktop and place a chile directly on the grate over the flame. When the bottom of the chile has blackened, turn to blacken all sides. Repeat with three remaining chiles. Place in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap until cooled. Alternatively, you can place the chiles on a broiler pan and cook in the broiler of your oven, turning the chiles after the tops have dried and blistered (they won’t turn as black as on the stove). When chiles are cooled, carefully peel off the skins, trying not to tear the chiles. Lay out the chiles on a board or platter and carefully cut a slit down the center of each (like a pocket). Insert the cheese into the chiles, making sure the slit can still close so the cheese doesn’t ooze out. Use a toothpick to close the slit. Meanwhile, heat a skillet with the vegetable oil over medium high heat. Put the flour onto a plate, and put the beaten eggs and 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a shallow bowl. Coat the outside of each chile with the flour, then coat in the eggs. Place two chiles into the hot oil and fry until the bottom is browned. Using tongs, carefully turn the chile to brown the other side. Remove to a plate lined with a paper towel and repeat with remaining two chiles. To serve, place chiles on a plate and cover with warmed red sauce. Garnish with queso fresco and cilantro.

Why Customers Love Tile by Tony Remodeling Meet the Catoosa remodeler who cares. BY MACY GOODNIGHT

W

hen it comes to making improvements to our homes, trust is a major component in making the right choice for such an investment. Tony Sementi, Owner of Tiles by Tony, is well known for his honesty and for the highest caliber of workmanship that he provides. “We have a reputation for higher quality and level of service,” he said. “We have great reviews, and we strive to live up that reputation.” Tile by Tony specializes in kitchen and bathroom remodels, with an emphasis on tile, but they can do it all. Realizing the need for control of the quality in their work, Tony put together a team of contractors for plumbing, electrical, construction, and more. For over 20 years, they have provided extraordinary remodels in homes while managing all of the details to make each project as smooth and complete as possible for each of their customers. Tony began his tile business out of

his home in 1982. His business grew quickly by word of mouth and through referrals. To ensure he provided an even greater degree of service, he opened a showroom at 430 S. Cherokee St. in Catoosa to enable his customers to see projects and materials first hand. “The showroom shows a lot of the things we do, but not everything,” said Tony. “Having this space gives us a footprint in the community, and you can come in any day of the week and find us here.” Someone will always pick up the phone as well. When providing a quote for a customer’s project, Tony ensures that details are itemized for complete transparency and to provide confidence in how his clients are spending their money. “Going with the cheapest bid is really not the best practice,” he said. an investment is being made in quality workmanship and materials, is important. “Don’t focus so much on the price, but what you’re getting for that price.”

Tony further ensures the excellence of each customer’s project by visiting the work site each day. “My guys are the best, but I go to let them and the customer know that I care,” he said. “I also make sure that all of the details are coming together as they should. Communication is very important.” The experts at Tile by Tony are helpful in exploring the design of a remodel, and work with a client to explore options that work best for their own space and how they live. Today’s designs exhibit artistry, with inspiration from nature. Granite is always the classic choice for countertops, as it is beautiful and durable. Wood-look floor tiles and hardwood floors are currently trending in design and add a timeless element of beauty to a home. Live age wood countertops and furniture are hugely popular and can be designed with inlays for an artistic and unique look. Barn doors and farmhouse sinks are also sought after, and Tony can do it all. When it comes to modern design, art is in. he annual event is a two-day exposition which features a variety of vendors who are offering free information to help those interested in full service to amateur and veteran do-ityourselfers with home improvement projects of all sizes, as well as offering financing, new buildings, materials, plants, flowers and more, all in one place. “The show is a partnership between the Claremore Expo/Visit Claremore and the Rogers County Builders Association,” said Tanya Andrews, Director of Claremore Expo & Tourism Development. The show features vendors and experts from across the region to aid attendees in various aspects of home and garden renovation and improvement. “When you come to the show, you’ll have everything you might want, from outside home repair needs, full kitchen and bathroom remodels, decks, some home lending options will be here, and there will be vendors who deal in the home décor,” said Kendel Stocker, Special Events Manager. “J. Farley’s Irish Pub will be in the concession offering up some great specials should you get hungry while you’re here. We’ll also have some of Claremore’s favorite food trucks on-site.” This year, due to COVID-19, the committee has implemented several changes. First the show is now a two-day show; March 26 and 27. “We have maxed the number of vendors to 75 to allow more space between vendors, and help keep everyone socially distanced. Although the show is early in the spring, weather shouldn’t be an issue as the vendors and sales will all be held inside the Expo Hall, with some Left: Claremore Expo/Visit Claremore event facilitators Tanya Andrews and Kendel Stocker have planned this year’s show with your safety at top of mind.

Although exhibitors from across the state will be in attendance, Andrews noted there will be a “tremendous amount of support” from those in the Claremore and Rogers County area, many of whom are exclusive to the Claremore show. “We have many exhibitors who aren’t at the Tulsa shows, because they might not feel them to be very beneficial to them, so you’ll see things at the Claremore show that you won’t see at other shows around the state,” she said. “Some of our vendors will only do the Claremore show because they like to see the return in their hometown, in their region.” “There is no admission charge to enjoy the show. This will be our fifth year not to charge admission,” Andrews said, “and it has made quite a difference in attendance. It is all

made possible by our partners and sponsors; we have great community support and this is a great way to pay it forward to the consumer.”

So, for a weekend of home products, lawn and garden equipment, seeds, plants and flowers, gifts, arts and crafts, visit the Claremore Home & Garden Show,

where you’ll learn more about home projects, remodeling projects, interior design, exterior home care and more. Presenting sponsor for this year’s show is Vickrey Heat & Air. Webb Outdoor Power Equipment and TNG Power Equipment are major sponsors; Solid Rock Realty, Michael Urie is the DIY sponsor; BancFirst is this year’s promotions sponsor; and vendor hospitality sponsors are Pixley Lumber, Solid Rock Realtors, Midtown Rentals and Sales and AMC Mortgage. The show will be held Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27 at the Claremore Expo Center, 400 Veterans Parkway in Claremore. Event hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), all chimneys should be cleaned at least once every year. Keeping your chimney clean helps prevent home fires—it’s as simple as that. When you burn a fire in your fireplace, two things happen: Chimney soot builds up, as well as creosote, which is a heavy, thick, oily residue similar to tar that’s a byproduct of burning wood. While soot is more easily removable, creosote sticks to the chimney lining, which can be dangerous because it’s extremely flammable.

According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), some of the new gas fireplaces still recommend or require an annual chimney cleaning. There will not be any soot or creosote in the chimney since you are not burning wood, but you may find bird nests that need to be removed, along with ensure firewalls are able to contain combustion/fire and safely exhaust them from the home, check for damaged or cracked chimney crown and mortar joints, and moisture problems.

A MEETING OF HOPE: POST-TREATMENT WITH DR. JAMES WEBB Why did you choose Dr. Webb? I have been to several doctors in the Tulsa area and most of them just want to give you pain medicine and don’t offer a long term plan. When I heard about Dr. Webb and that he would offer a solution not just pain meds, I wanted to see if he can help…..And He did!

What procedure did you have done? I had the Kyphoplasty, and it is amazing!

What was your experience like? It was great! Very little pain afterwards, maybe a couple days. Not invasive at all. After that it was like a miracle.

Would you refer him? Absolutely! Actually, I have! Any time I hear someone say “my back hurts” I say “ Let me tell you about Dr. Webb” I’m telling you , He is a miracle worker and has been a Godsend to me. I can’t say enough good things about him!!

ho believes in love at first sight? Isn’t that found just in fairytales? Isn’t love at first glance only found in television shows like “Married at First Sight”? Does that ever happen in everyday life and the relationship actually have a happy ending? One Tulsa couple says, “Yes!” Megan Williams was 12 years old and at a church youth group event when she laid eyes on what she believed to be the love of her life. Colby Roof was tall, dreamy and an older man; he was all of 13. There was a lot of youth group flirting, chemistry and chasing that went on for the years until the two were old enough to date. This match made

in heaven would be devoted to each other even through some rough patches for 10 years until the walk down the aisle was finally scheduled. Now, after nearly a decade of marriage, the Roofs have their differences but know through their long history together how to navigate compromise. “We both believe in picking our battles,” Megan Roof said. “We have been together so long we mostly avoid situations that would put us in the need of compromise. For example, I will avoid things if I know it to be bothersome to Colby within reason. I know some things cannot be avoided, but somehow along the way our thoughts tend to be the

same.” There is one unresolved battle with this amiable couple, however. There is that one thing that keeps these two at odds. “Dogs,” Megan Roof said. “It’s silly but true. How to train the dogs. If we can leave them for a vacation. If we should get another. Colby would bring home a new animal every day if he could.” Communication is key in maintaining a happy home. Megan Roof ’s counterpart has some strong feelings about keeping that running smooth. “I want her to feel safe telling me everything, and I definitely know that I don’t have to hide or

sugar coat things,” Colby Roof said. “It’s difficult to come to an understanding without an open line of communication.” Wow! What a guy. No matter how much a couple is in love, relationships can get a little dicey from time to time when being cooped up during a worldwide lockdown, but this duo has a game plan to keep everyday life stimulating. “We try to keep things interesting,” Colby Roof said. “Before the pandemic, a date night could be a concert, rock climbing, walking through the park, etc. Lately, it’s been a quiet night at home watching movies, cooking good food and avoiding the public.” This couple sounds too good to be true. Surely, they get on each others nerves from time to time. The Mrs. admits to one irritation. “[It’s those] small stupid things like putting trash BY the trashcan but not IN the trashcan because it’s full,” Megan Roof said. Neither of these two came into their relationship from a life of perfect peace on the homefront. Colby Roof came from a divorced family and Megan Roof came from parents – her dad a pastor – who have been married for over 37 years. The successful marriage between the parents was not without their own set of

struggles, but she watched them work through it. This young couple saw examples of what to do and what not to do. With that as their road map, they have circumnavigated their own way. While Megan Roof feels that couples should ask the more experienced for marriage guidance, the hubs doesn’t feel that way at all. “Don’t listen to marriage advice,” Colby Roof said. “It’s a unique experience between you and your partner that nobody has a blueprint for. Keep an open heart and mind.” No matter how happy a couple can be, sometimes a lot can be a lot and a little less can be more. Specifically, these two like to spend a portion of time away from each other just so they can enjoy the reunion. About once a year they have separate vacations with friends. Hubby will hang with the boys while Megan Roof spends time with her chick friends. They like to put themselves in the position to miss each other. Evidently that saying about the heart growing fonder is true. Although this couple has nearly 20 years together, they never take each other for granted. How do they manifest that deliberate

backing? Colby Roof says they always try to be considerate of each other and allow the other to pursue their passions and dreams while offering endless support. In short, he says it’s honoring their wedding vows. Even though this couple is young – still in their early 30s – they carry on like a couple of old souls. They are comfortable with each other and settled. There’s not much drama in this household; neither gets too worked up about anything. Both know no one is going anywhere, their roots run deep and when it all shakes out, they are lifetime soulmates still experiencing that magnetism discovered that first night at the church youth group event. “[He’s] my best friend, my partner in crime, the peanut butter to my jelly,” Megan Roof said.
