With over 35 years experience in the industry you can rest assured Outdoor Creations will take care of you every step of the way. “A neighbor recommended OCR to me when he learned I was considering an outdoor living area. I reached out to Jake and he was very responsive, professional and prompt. He was the only contractor who came to inspect the job and make recommendations. While we were negotiating the pergola, Jake noticed my roof damage and worked with me and my insurance company to process a claim for the roof replacement. His assistance helped me to get almost an additional $2,000 for the damage to my property.
We contracted with OCR for both the pergola and the roof replacement. We had recently completed a significant landscaping update in the front yard so I asked Jake to make sure that this area was properly protected. OCR showed up when they said they would, worked hard to finish the job as quickly as possible, and cleaned the yard so well you could not tell they had ever been there. Additionally, with the new impact resistant roof, my annual insurance premiums went down by 43%!
I would absolutely recommend OCR for your roofing or outdoor living projects. In fact, I have already recommended OCR to our neighbors who also sustained hail damage from the storm that damaged our property.” - Shawn M.

FOREVER YOUNG
BY ERICA LUDWIG
n today’s day and age, it’s all about perspective. The staff and seniors of Tapestry at Woodland Hills live by their positive outlook on life, so much so that it has earned them recognition among their competitors. The active 55+ community was presented with the Senior Community of the Year Award for 2016 at the Zenith Awards this last year. Applicants were required to submit a video to set their community apart from the rest. Property Manager Paige Johnston headed up the project, using her iPhone to interview residents and staff giving testimonials about why they love living and working at Tapestry. She also showcased the complex through the video. “We’re known for being a bright and happy community and I wanted to show that in this video,” said Paige. “Our staff trulyy cares about our residents, o which is why we try to

IT’S SWARMING UP BY SEANA WARREN
T
he groundhog was wrong – at least for the Oklahoma area. While parts of the north and west have been ravaged by snow and dangerous rains, it’s been quite nice in the Sooner state. But nicer weather can invite a few visitors that no one wants to entertain termites. Swarming of these destructive and pesky little creatures usually occurs in the spring and most often during the morning following a warm rain shower, whereby the soil temperature is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. There are several areas in green country that are in high risk of springtime termite swarms including: Bartlesville, Broken Arrow, Claremore, Jenks, Miami, Muskogee, Okmulgee, Owasso, Ponca City, Sand Springs, Sapulpa and Tulsa. “We are armed and prepared for the early spring weather,” said Sheila Disler or Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care. “Treatments are administered in and around our homes, garden, shrubs and lawns, therefore diminishing the inherent numbers of termites, mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and bedbugs.” Termite colony nest
development is slow in the first few months. But after a few years, the queen termite can actually produce up to 10,000 offspring a year. One queen may live for many years and workers up to two years. The swarmers go to work in the thousands after a mature termite nest is large and well-established on smaller nests. When specialists find a smaller swarmer nest, it’s a sure sign that a larger termite nest is in the vicinity and professional protection is required. “We always perform a thorough, free inspection at your residence or business before recommending any treatment, “said Justin Buckmaster of Mother Nature’s. “Each pest problem
is different and requires a tailormade solution. Mother’s Nature’s experienced staff is ready to help our neighbors in green country prepare.” According to the United States Department of Agriculture, U.S. residents spend an estimated $5 billion annually to control termites and repair termite damage. One termite swarm can cause thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to one home or business. “Our biggest investments are our homes and businesses, and it makes sense to proactively guard those investments with professional help,” said Sheila. “And, Mother Nature’s has been serving the green country area since 1979. If you need us, we will be there.” MOTHER NATURE’S PEST CONTROL AND LAWN CARE
Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care department managers include: Brent Pressnall, pests; Tom Sevitts, lawn; David Grady, human resources; and (not pictured) Andrea Monks, office manager. Sheila Disler is communications director, and Justin Buckmaster is marketing director for Mother Nature’s.

LOVE ON THE ROCKS The Big Meat Run hits Disney BY CLAIRE CARTER
t
has been called one of the largest events in the state of Oklahoma. The beautiful part about it is that it all happened by accident. 22 years ago, seasoned machinist John Sumner was working in Claremore, Oklahoma when he ventured down to Grand Lake to check out the Pensacola Dam in the little community of Disney. It was then that Sumner discovered an amazing natural rock garden, which is the result of 77 years of water passing through the turbines of the dam. Worn down to the bedrock to form a canyon like surrounding, it became a place for

come to see. There are two major “climbs” that are attempted by most, Viagra Hill and Bounty Hill. There is a certain satisfaction in watching the participants attempt and succeed the vertical crawls, yet there is more of a crowd reaction when they tumble over and fail. The name of the event, The Big Meat Run, comes from the thick width of the tires that adorn the rock crawling machines. “It really was just a matter of luck and good timing,” stated Sumner on the event itself. Due to some local politics in Disney over the years, the event still lacks major sponsorships. But

Not only are gas and food sales astronomical over the course of the three-day event; hotels, cabins, parks and campgrounds are booked up for miles around. “It’s a great event and we’re lucky to have it return year after year,” stated Disney Mayor Chris Tutor. Tutor, who also owns the Dam Rec Park, stated

In just a few short years Disney has seen a handful of new business owners come to town. CopperWood Lodge owned by Dusty Wood has built a number of great cabins close to the dam. Two Mom’s Campground owner Shelly Martin has also
built a fun spot for offroaders to enjoy enjoy. There’s also Cherokee Spirit RV Park, which is a gated park owned by Norma Crockett and the oldest campground Hogan’s Off Road Park owned by Russ Hogan. The free event, which takes place this March 24-26 below the Pensacola Dam, will no doubt result in another great turnout of spectators and participants. In terms of tourism, the numbers are undoubtedly huge for not only Disney, but

oodwill Industries of Tulsa is celebrating their 90th anniversary in 2017– 90 years of operating with integrity, treating others with respect, upholding commitment, celebrating diversity and providing space for empowerment. “This anniversary just gives us an even greater reason to celebrate,” said Nancy Webster, the director of community relations. “We’ve been privileged to serve the community for 90 years, and are excited to continue growing our programs and the number of people we serve.” A staple in the community since 1927, the mission of Goodwill Industries of Tulsa is simple: to provide work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities and other employment barriers. “Our employment and job training programs also focus on job retention which truly transforms lives, now and into the

future,” Webster said. When you donate to one of the Goodwill’s 28 Donation Centers, or shop at one of the 11 area retail stores, you directly support the company’s mission. In 2016 alone, 469, 933 people donated 21 million pounds of clothing and household items. The revenue that was generated by the sale of those goods allowed Goodwill Industries of Tulsa to provide job training and other related services to 2,156 individuals, and to serve 3,935 people through
their Goodwill Job Connection program. During 2016, Goodwill training participants filled 593 jobs in the community, and graduated with GEDs and other certifications. In the tradition of Goodwill Industries’ founding motto, “A hand-up, not a hand out”, program participants

receive the tools they need to help themselves. These tools include: resume workshops, mock interviews, interview clothing and job fairs. There are three major ways to get involved with Goodwill: donating monetarily or with gently used goods, shopping at Goodwill stores or by calling Goodwill to volunteer. Lend a hand and visit Goodwill today to see why they’ve been helping others for almost a century. GOODWILL INDUSTRIES OF TULSA 2800 SOUTHWEST BLVD | TULSA, OK (918) 584-7291 WWW.GOODWILLTULSA.ORG

DISCOUNT IN PRICE, BY ERICA LUDWIG The definition of discount is, “offering goods for sale at a reduced price.” Discounted pricing is sometimes associated with lower quality. Not in this case. Discount Garage Door carries an all-inclusive better product with measurable differences. Discount Garage Door installs 24-gauge steel, high R-value insulated doors and premium garage door operators everywhere from million dollar homes to storage buildings. They use industry and consumer top quality rated products, like Wayne Dalton, Doorlink, Genie, and Liftmaster. “We know these products are the best and we want to offer them for the best price,” said Owner Dustin Loyal. “Most people associate the term ‘discount’ with a cheap product, but we pride ourselves on that name because of our prices. We just want to do right by people and sell them the best quality part or product for a great price.” Dustin was born and raised on a farm in Wellston, Oklahoma, before moving to Phoenix at 18 years old. It was there that he began his career in the garage door industry for a national garage door sales, service and installation company. Dustin moved back to the Oklahoma City area in 2001 and established Discount Garage Door, expanding to Tulsa in 2010. Discount Garage Door not only cares about the quality of your door, but helping you select what will suit your home best. “When you set an appointment for a free estimate, a member of

our professional team will come to your home. We will measure your existing door and opening, identifying any potential obstacles; overcoming those up front,” said Sales Manager Bill Layne. “We will show you color and panel samples. We also have photos of the actual doors available for your selection, and can provide you with a computer generated mock-up of your selection.” While most companies offer warranties only up to a year, Discount Garage Door has a five-year warranty on parts and labor. “Our warranty definitely set us apart,” said General Manager Kyle McIntyre. “Most true warranties are for 90 days to a year, and that’s just on parts. We go above and beyond for our customers by offering a fiveyear warranty on labor. Our reviews are all five star and by real customers in the Tulsa metro area. We really take pride in that.” Another unique factor to the Discount Garage team is their fourlegged family member. Some folks may also recognize Jasper, Dustin’s Irish wolfhound, from Discount Garage Door events and commercials. “We’ve kind of dubbed him our mascot,” says Dustin. “He’s our star. He’s the reason that people walk up to us at shows.” Discount Garage Door

operates on a 24/7-business model. An employee is always there to answer the phone, even on nights and weekends. It will cost you the same whether you have an emergency and need someone immediately on a Sunday night or a Tuesday morning. “We try to stand out from everybody else, from quality of product, to being available for our customers at all times, as well as our quality control even on the smallest job,” said Dustin. “We are always checking with clients on how we can improve. ” Discount Garage Door works with the St. Jude Dream Home each year with 100% donation. They also donate to Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels and the Tulsa Performing Arts Center rehearsal space. “Whether you purchase from us or a competitor, we want you to be well informed about things that matter and are usually overlooked. This is why we created a questionnaire so you know what questions to ask.” Become a part of the family and give Discount Garage Door a call. The 4th Annual Superhero Challenge is coming your way Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. This family-friendly event hosted by the Child Abuse Network (CAN)/Children’s Advocacy Center has something special planned for superheroes of all ages. The Superhero Challenge is the organization’s second annual fundraiser; the other is the annual black tie event, the Candlelight Ball. According to Rebecca Thompson, event co-chair, it was a no brainer to put this event together. “The thought was simple,” she said. “We have an event for adults, why not have something for the entire family?” Tulsa and the surrounding communities come out to support and build the event up to make it a huge success. Many organizations volunteer to build the obstacle courses to make it light and fun. Thompson says, “CAN is so well run 28 |

A ROOM FULL OF POSSIBILITIES

here was a time when the garage was thought of as a storage room attached to the house. In most cases it caught the unsightly, unseen and sometimes unwanted mess. The days of the clutter catching, grease monkey catch-all are going the way of the dinosaur. Garages these days have become extensions of the living area. From man-caves to show places for big kid toys, this parking and storage space is taking on its own unique place in the home, for some even being the hangout spot with additions of big screen TV’s, sound systems, decorative art or even disco balls. Enter Concrete Solutions. Josh Keltner started the company in 2003 when doing work on his patio. He was simply making changes and improvements he

Servers greet you like an old friend while upholding professional service. Under the same ownership as Franklin’s Pork & Barrel, another Broken Arrow staple known for its unique spins on classic entrées, Toast aims to offer innovative and locally sourced meals along with seasonal menus for its patrons. The restaurant features an array of breakfast items savory and sweet. Try their famous Benny’s, or eggs
R
benedict options. Highly recommended are the Georgia Benny’s, a dish consisting of a hand-made cheddar biscuit with a hand-breaded chicken thigh and poached eggs, topped with creamy hollandaise and served with homemade fried potatoes. This specialty pairs comfort with fine dining and goes great with a cup of coffee. For the sweet tooth, choose from the seven different entrees Toast offers in house. The lemon blueberry pancakes are a great take on a classic item. Soufflé-style pancakes are served with fresh blueberries, vanilla butter and fresh fruit. If you’re feeling fancy, try the berry
cream cheese crepes, filled with lemony cream cheese and topped with triple berry compote. If you like options of savory with your sweet, you can always add a side of eggs, biscuits or breakfast tacos. Bright colors, brick walls and conversation to fill tables surrounding make this restaurant a popular brunch spot. Generous, sharable portions leave for a happy wallet, with prices ranging from 7-15 dollars. Head over to Broken Arrow Main Street to see why Toast is proving itself to be the greatest thing in breakfast since sliced bread. TOAST 201 S.
