BROKEN ARROW NE Oklahoma’s Leading Consumer Newspaper
AVB Opens New Downtown Branch AVB celebrates 110 years of business with opening of new location in Broken Arrow’s Rose District. By Duane Blankenship Founded in 1905, two years before Oklahoma achieved statehood, the 25-foot-wide AVB Bank was originally at Main and Dallas in downtown Broken Arrow. In 1906, a local newspaper printed an article about the then Arkansas Valley National Bank, stating the bank was “well managed by young men [and women] of much ability and proven business judgment, who recognize that they are there to treat people courteously and honorably, as well as to loan them money or receive deposits.” Over the years, the bank has expanded both west and south, acquiring the area between Main and Ash, and Dallas and El Paso Streets. Generations of customers have visited AVB Bank at 302 S. Main St. At close of the business day on
Friday, September 18, 2015, AVB staff collectively gathered in the lobby to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. The old drive-thru closed lanes for the last time on Saturday, September 19 and staff began transitioning to the new two-story, 15,000-square-foot building located in the previous AVB Bank parking lot. The new branch at 322 S. Main St. opened for normal hours of operation on Monday, September 21, 2015. “For over 110 years, AVB Bank has been committed to the economic growth, development and success of downtown Broken Arrow,” said Ted Cundiff, AVB Bank President and CEO. “As we prepared for this his(continued on page 24)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Strategies Aimed at Maximizing Your Social Security Benefits limit on your earnings.
BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
In the old days, the Social Security Administration would send you a Social Security statement each year in the mail. It estimated what your benefits would be if you retired at your full retirement age, at age 70, and also at age 62 (which is the earliest you can apply for benefits). You can retire as early as 62 and take benefits at a reduced rate. If you work after your full retirement age, you can receive higher benefits because of additional earnings and credits for delayed retirement. Full retirement age is determined based on what year you were born. If you were born in 1938 or earlier, full retirement age is 65. If you were born between 1943 and 1959, your full retirement age is 66 (plus a few months depending on the exact year of your birth). If you were born 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67. So basically, the age to receive full Social Security benefits is inching upward each year. Before long, who knows? You may have to be 80 years old to retire with full benefits. Hopefully, I’m joking here. If you are eligible for retirement benefits, your current or divorced spouse (so long as you were married for 10 years or more) and minor children may also receive benefits. Each may qualify for up to about 50 percent of your benefit amount. Social Security statements are no longer delivered to you each year via mail. However, you can easily go online and sign up for an account with the Social Security Administration and check what your estimates would be. Just go to www.socialsecurity.gov. It’s easy and free! Many people believe that Social Security benefits are designed to replace 100% of your income when you retire. It is not! Social Security benefits are not intended to be your
• When can I apply for Social Security retirement benefits? You can apply for Social Security retirement benefits when you are at least 61 years and 9 months of age. You should apply three months before you want your benefits to start. Even if you are not ready to retire, you should still sign up for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday.
only source of income when you retire. On average, Social Security will replace about 40 percent of your annual pre-retirement earnings. You will need other savings, investments, pensions, or retirement accounts to make sure you have enough money to live comfortably when you retire. So, if you don’t want to find yourself up a creek without a paddle, you need to start pinching your pennies now and building your retirement savings. The following are questions that my clients often ask about Social Security: • Will withdrawals from my individual retirement account affect my Social Security benefits? Social Security does not count pensions payments, annuities, or the interest or dividends from your savings and investments as earnings. They do not lower your Social Security retirement benefits. However, if you take benefits prior to your full retirement age, and you are receiving earned income (from employment) over the yearly earnings limit, your benefit will be reduced. For 2015, that yearly earnings limit is $15,720. For every $2 over the limit, they will deduct $1 from your benefit payment. After you reach full retirement age, you can receive full benefits with no

• If you are already collecting your retirement benefit and are at or over full retirement age, you can tell Social Security you want to suspend further benefits and then ask them to restart your benefits at a later date, like at age 70. Social Security will then apply its Delayed Retirement Credit to your existing benefit once you start collecting again. So, if you are willing to give up your Social Security income for a while, you may be able to collect higher benefits later. It’s important to have as full a handle of Social Security’s guidelines as possible. For information about more Social Security ideas I’ve learned over the years that you may not know or fully understand, give us call. We can run a benefits report for you to help you determine when and how to take your benefits to maximize the amount you can draw. A Crowning Advancement New technology eliminates messy, gaggy impressions and creates finished porcelain crowns in HOURS, not weeks. By Steve White, D.D.S Like every thing else in our lives, technology has greatly influenced the efficiency, quality and accuracy of the care dentists can deliver to their patients. It starts with the business office, where every thing is streamlined – from appointment scheduling, to bookkeeping and maintaining patient records, to communication and marketing through social media. Diagnostic procedures are enhanced with the use of highly accurate digital xrays. They produce less radiation and there are no longer messy chemicals used to process those x-rays, that have created environmental concerns. Perhaps the most noticeable advancement that can greatly improve your dental experience is in the area of actual dental treatment. We can now produce finished porcelain crowns in less than 2 hours using CAD/CAM technology. Even when “same day” crowns aren’t an option, they can still be finished in a shorter amount of time, meaning less time the patient has to wear a tem-
porary crown. Another huge benefit for many patients is no messy, gaggy impressions. Digital impressions are highly accurate and are being used in all phases of dental treatment, including making partial and full dentures, orthodontic diagnosis and treatment and complicated cases involving dental implants, crowns, bridges, and cosmetic dentistry. Dr. White’s team is trained to deliver quality restorations using this system in a clean, friendly environment. The benefits to the patient include: • 1 visit to the dentist instead of 2 • Only need to have your mouth numb one time • No messy impressions • Unsurpassed accuracy • On-Site lab technician to insure perfect shade matching & completing the restoration • No need to wear a temporary crown You might think this sounds expensive. It is actually no more costly than the old 2 appointment procedures that required more chair time, making temporary crowns (that sometimes need to be recemented), not as much anesthesia, no impression materials, and not as much time and expense for room and instrument sterilization and set-up. These costsavings offset the investment in the state-of-the-art equipment necessary to deliver these fine restorations. As we enter the fall months, don’t forget about your dental health and that needed dental work you’ve been
putting off. Your dental insurance and flex plan benefits are lost if you don’t use them by the end of the year. The closer we get to the holidays, it becomes harder to find time for both you and your dentist to fit in those appointments. Give yourself the gift of health this year and don’t throw away the benefits you’ve earned. Call now to make those important appointments.

Broken Arrow Youth Basketball Signups Continue The deadline for recreational division registration is October 9, 2015.
By Jim Butcher Online registration for the recreational division of the 2015 season of the Broken Arrow Youth Basketball Association continues through October 9, while space is available, according to Jessica Welch, vice president. “The program – this year attracting approximately 650 Broken Arrow boys and girls – is all about the kids,” explained the mother whose children also participate in the program. “My children and I love this program.” The youth program “is a great opportunity to keep the kids active while building character and camaraderie,” she adds. Jessica also finds it exciting to observe and hear how the older players become positive role models for the younger players. “That is so important in our society today.” Jessica pats everyone on the back for all the hard work they contribute to make the association successful. “Sometimes we don’t realize how important this program can be,” she said. “It is a wonderful tool for kids to gain social skills and improve athleticism. It’s good for the children, and it’s also good for the
coaches and us as parents.” An activity this large and encompassing naturally brings changes. “This season we have added a boys only group of teams from combined grades nine and ten,” she said. The one change that affects everyone is increased registration fees. The cost for the first child has been bumped to $155 to help pay for a uniform (game jersey and shorts from Midwest Sports) and will complement the Broken Arrow Tiger look. Fees for a second child will be $145 and $105 for a third. Children living within the Broken Arrow Public School district are eligible. All players that are subject to the draft must attend a combined practice tentatively scheduled for October 25. Eighth, ninth and tenth graders trying out for their school team should sign up to reserve a spot; those making the school team will have their fees returned in full. Eligibility is subject to verification. Both boys and girls teams will hit the hardwood through two leagues, recreational and select (competitive), beginning this December. Games hosted in Broken
Arrow are played at the Broken Arrow Community Center gyms. Parents can expect about half of the season to be in town and the remainder at the opponents’ club facilities. Gate admission at all venues will be $3 for adults and $1 for students and senior citizens. “Broken Arrow Youth Basketball is a participating member of the Indian Nations Basketball Conference,” Jessica said. “This association was designed to provide a playing season running from December into March. Post-season playoffs are scheduled for a championship. GGifts from the Heart The ESA Benefit Craft Show will be Saturday, October 24 at Oliver Middle School in Broken Arrow. By Bev Schwarzkopf
Eager shoppers at the October 24th Epsilon Sigma Alpha Benefit Craft Show may focus on finding special holiday gifts for family and friends – they may not realize that they are also bestowing gifts on grateful strangers. Sorority proceeds from the craft show become donations to charities and nonprofits at local, state, and national levels. The 43rd annual craft show, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oliver Middle School (3100 W. New Orleans) in Broken Arrow, provides much-needed funding help for Broken Arrow Neighbors, the Oklahoma School for the Blind, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, among others. Kim Goddard, director of Broken Arrow Neighbors (BAN), describes her agency as “truly grateful” for ESA Alpha Rho’s unrestricted
donations. BAN uses the funds for urgent needs such as financial help for clients with medication costs, high protein items for the food pantry, and fresh products to go in holiday baskets. The ESA/ BAN partnership supports the “assistance with dignity” mission of this local agency. Alpha Rho members also donate funds and volunteer time to the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee. Several students receive monthly spending money allowances for special extracurricular activities, and at Christmas the sorority “adopts” five students to make wishes come true when families’ budgets are stretched thin. Social Services Specialist Jane Thomas expresses gratitude for “making our children’s lives happier.”
ESA also has a 40+ year history of donating funds to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. By Deanna Rebro
You only get one chance to make a first impression. Dress for Success Tulsa is here to help disadvantaged women make a winning impression as they transition from unemployment to a successful work environment. On Friday, October 9, the Step Up To Success Fashion Show and Auction will raise funds for the organization to continue and expand its work. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Greenwood Cultural Center near downtown Tulsa. Guests are invited to participate in masquerade party attire or business dress attire. Cocktails, silent and live auctions, dinner, and a fashion show will make the evening fun and exciting. Chera Kimiko, KOTV-Tulsa CW anchor, will emcee the event. Executive men and women representing Tulsa area businesses will be modeling the latest fashions and accessories from Dillard’s in Woodland Hills Mall. As a first, several Dress for Success Tulsa clients will also take the runway with fashions by local designers. Jill Donovan, founder and CEO of celebrity-endorsed Rustic Cuff, will serve as the keynote speaker. Jill is an accomplished entrepreneur whose journey began after
obtaining her law degree and realizing that she wanted to do something different. Deciding to make cuffs as a self-taught hobby on a $250 budget has turned her life into a self-made success story. Dress for Success Tulsa in partnership with Rustic Cuff will be debuting an exclusive cuff through their organization. “Like” Dress for Success Tulsa on Facebook for additional launch information. The 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, as part of a worldwide effort with 144 affiliates in 12 countries, relies on donations and fundraising efforts for much of its existence. “There is never a fee for the women who use our services,” adds Ronda.

Comprehensive Care for Children
Strength of Mind Behavioral Health offers compassionate, effective treatment for children who suffer from disorders including depression, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, autism, and more.
By Sheryl Sowell School has been in session for a couple months now, and many parents have already received the dreaded phone call (or calls) from their child’s teacher saying, “Johnny has been loud and disruptive in class,” or “Susie is easily distracted and has difficulty paying attention.” For most children, a certain level of problematic behavior is normal and to be expected. Some children, however, experience difficulties on a regular and repeated basis – they are not one-time occurrences, but a daily struggle. According to Angela McConnell, pediatric nurse practitioner at Strength of Mind Behavioral Health, “Oftentimes behavioral problems go unnoticed or are put on the backburner by parents and guardians, and it is the teacher calling every day that causes it to become evident a child is experiencing a more serious issue that needs to be addressed.” Strength of Mind Behavioral offers comprehensive programs for children and adolescents ages 5 to 18 to treat a large array of disorders, including anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism and others. Treatment options include
counseling and medication. “Mood swings are common in adolescents, so it can be difficult for family members to see the gravity of a problem. It is often easier for teachers to see there is something more serious going on when they have 30 other children to compare to,” says Angela. “A child may suffer from anxiety, for example, if he or she is regularly tearful, irritable, experiences panic attacks, refuses to do things, and has stomach pains and nausea in the mornings before school. Children with ADD/ADHD typically exhibit hyperactivity, difficulty with change, or inability to focus. Symptoms for disorders often overlap, so all of the pieces of the puzzle are valuable to determining the course of action to take.” If you are a parent or guardian seeking help, call the office of Strength of Mind Behavioral. The first appointment takes about 45 minutes and involves a meeting to discuss what is going on, the child’s medical history, and taking their vitals including height and weight. When counseling and/or medication is the next step, the family also works with Tracy Loper, M.D., and Ashlee Graham, physician assistant.
If it is determined that bipolar disorder or autism is a possibility, the following appointment requires a four-hour testing process. “To illustrate the range, there are 131 different types of autism, including high and low functioning and everything in between. At Strength of Mind Behavioral, we do everything possible to determine exactly what the issue is to help your child The children’s care team at Strength of Mind Behavioral Health improve their quality of life.” includes (L to R): Tracy Loper, M.D.; Ashlee Graham, P.A.-C.; The staff of Strength of Mind and Angela McConnell, APRN. Convenience. Innovation. Caring. sincere interest in their health and progress. In fact, our patients become our family. We are their cheerleaders and genuinely want them to succeed.
The price of depression is staggering. It affects your family, friends, employer, employees, and, of course, you. It leads to indecisiveness about life while healthy development, jobs, hobbies and relationships come to a grinding halt. At Strength of Mind Behavioral Health, our goal is to “go all out” for the people who come to us for help; we feel it is the right thing to do. We provide a comprehensive approach to treating depression, remaining beside you and guiding you on your journey to health and wellbeing. We offer a level of caring for our patients that larger institutions do not provide - we get to know our patients and take a
Strength of Mind was one of the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain, compelling neurons to start firing and restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while elevating moods and encouraging ambition. It is so important to us that we
offer TMS because it is a unique treatment that does something pills and old style shock therapy cannot do. It is gentler and easier on the patient than other treatments, and it has been proven effective in helping patients overcome depression. Before TMS, there was a significant gap in care.
Dr. Jeff McIlroy, Chief of Psychiatry for Strength of Mind, says their TMS treatment is a three-pronged approach to treating and recovering from depression
Questions Most Often Asked About TMS Therapy What is TMS Therapy? TMS, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is an FDA-cleared proven non-drug treatment for depression, specifically for patients with depression who have not benefited from initial antidepressant medication. How does TMS Therapy work? NeuroStar TMS Therapy uses pulses of magnetic energy, precisely targeted at a key area of the brain known to be underactive in depression sufferers. This area is called the prefrontal cortex. By stimulating this local area, neurons in the prefrontal cortex communicate to deeper brain neurons causing a secondary effect on remaining areas of the brain involved in mood. These effects are intended to restore normal function and lift the symptoms of depression. What are the benefits of TMS? TMS Therapy is the first and only non-systemic and non-invasive depression treatment to be cleared by the FDA. It can effectively treat depression in those who cannot tolerate
antidepressant medication or without side effects such as: weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, dry mouth, sedation, etc.
demonstrated that TMS Therapy does not result in any negative effects on memory or concentration.
What are the side effects? The most common side effect associated with TMS Therapy® is pain or discomfort during treatment at or near the treatment area. This pain or discomfort is generally mild to moderate and typically diminishes after the first week of treatment. In clinical trials, less than 5% of patients discontinued NeuroStar treatment due to side effects. NeuroStar treatment also showed no effects on thinking or memory. Because NeuroStar TMS Therapy acts directly on the prefrontal cortex, it lacks the systemic side effects experienced with antidepressant medication. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with TMS Therapy. The risk of seizure in general clinical use is 1 in 30,000 treatments.
Will TMS Therapy help with my depression? Many people with major depression who were treated with TMS experienced significant benefits. In clinical trials, after six weeks of treatment, 1 in 2 patients improved significantly and 1 in 3 patients were completely free of depression symptoms. Efficacy was established in a controlled clinical trial comparing active treatment with the NeuroStar TMS therapy System to an inactive device. Patients treated with active NeuroStar TMS Therapy received an average reduction in their depression symptom score of 22.1% compared to a 9% average reduction in patients receiving inactive treatment.
Does TMS Therapy cause memory loss? No. TMS Therapy was systematically evaluated for its effects on memory. Clinical trials
What is treatment with TMS Therapy like? During treatment, patients recline comfortably and are awake and alert throughout the
TMS Therapy session. No anesthesia or sedation is needed. Treatment involves placement of the magnetic coil against the patient’s head. Patients will hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on their head during treatment. Each TMS Therapy session takes less than an hour to complete and is conducted right in our TMS Therapy Suite, five days week, for approximately 4-6 weeks. After treatment, patients can immediately return to normal activities. Is TMS Therapy like Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)? No. TMS Therapy is an outpatient procedure that, unlike electroconvulsive therapy, does not require anesthesia, sedation or the production of a convulsion. LLower Your Utility Bills Community Builders offers customers great suggestions for efficient home improvement.
By Duane Blankenship Community Builders, Inc. President Greg Wolter founded the organization while working out of his home more than 30 years ago. The company does home remodeling throughout most of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Southeast Kansas, and Southwest Missouri. They are not general contractors, but rather specialize in work they know best and do really well. That includes energy-efficient composite siding and replacement windows, bath
Now is a great time to be thinking about roofs. Greg says a common shingle has an average life expectancy of only seven years, and a quality, top-of-theline shingle should last about 11 years. Community Builders is currently featuring metal shingles and stone-coated metal shingles that carry 50-year labor and materials warranties. Yes, they cost more than run-of-themill composite shingles, but compare the life expectancies. Greg says that most insurance

According to Greg, throughout their long history, Community Builders has impressed customers with their professionalism and dedication to customer service. “We’re grateful to be able to provide outstanding products and services to our clients and are thankful for the opportunity they’ve given us to earn their business,” he said.

companies also discount premiums on homeowner policies up to 35 percent for stone-coated or metal roofs. “When we install our metal roofing products, we put a layer of insulation under the roof that should save customers money on both their heating and cooling utility bills,” he explained. When asked by customers how long he thinks a metal roof will really last, Greg answers, “I don’t know. We’ve only been in business for 30 years!” You’ll definitely want to check out Community Builders’ metal roof deals that will save you money on installation. You’ll also receive a Green Energy Barrier installed that employs advanced space age technology. With the Energy Barrier, Greg says customers can expect to save from 20 to 40 percent on cooling bills and a little less on heating. Community also offers 12 months “same as cash” or easy low payment plans to suit you and your budget. “When you install a traditional shingle to your home, it does nothing to improve the home’s value,” says Greg. “With Community Builders’ metal or stone-coated metal shingles, your home’s value will improve.” Some of the other quality products you’ll find at Community Builders include Jacuzzi walk-in tubs, custombuilt sunrooms that let you enjoy the outdoors in comfort regardless of the weather or season, Cedar Ridge Vinyl Siding that provides your home with the look of freshly painted cedar without the upkeep of
traditional wood siding, and Enviro View Premium Windows. These replacement windows are advertised to improve energy savings by up to 40 percent with their energyefficient design that is airtight, reflects hot summer air, and locks out cool air during the worst of winter; plus they are durable and incredibly simple to maintain. Homeowners report over 40% savings on their heating and air conditioning bills. If you’re thinking of remodeling to make your house a dream home, rest assured that Community Builders is a professional and respected organization. You can review their record with the Better Business Bureau and the Greater Tulsa Home Builders Association. They have also been recognized by the National Association of Siding and Window Dealers with the highly coveted Business Ethics Award. Now is the time to check out the really great offerings from Community Builders. Visit their website or give them a call to schedule your free estimate to improving your home.

Microneedling Treatment For Face, Neck, and Chest with HGF, Pro-Retinol, Hydraulic Acid.
One $100, regularly $180 or package of 3 for $275.
Skin needling, also called microneedling therapy, collagen induction therapy (CIT), and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a device that contains fine needles. The needles are used to puncture the skin to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture creates a channel that triggers the body to fill these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. Through the process of neovascularization and neocollagenesis, there is improvement in skin texture and firmness, as well as reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks.
Anti-aging-voluminizing, collagen building, antioxidant 6 step-facial with rare elements. This incomparable youth restoring facial leverages the power of marine harvested collagen, active natural exfoliants, and concentrated restoring ingredients for power-packed anti-aging sea based facial. This ultra-concentrated facial combines with European pampering in six power-packed steps to combat skin breakdown due to aging and environmental stressors, buffering skin moisture and protein fibers levels with sea harvested nourishment. Replenishes collagen and elastin, volumizes, smoothers, anti-oxidizes, and boosts skin resiliency. Instant results include reduction in appearance of lines, broken capillaries, facial redness and increased skin evenness. Suitable for all skin types. Allow 75 min.

Clinical Trial for Alzheimer’s Disease Accepting Patients
Tulsa Clinical Research is currently conducting a clinical trial testing a new investigational medication to help maintain memory and delay mental decline in those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. By Sheryl Sowell Tulsa Clinical Research conducts clinical trials in all phases. One of their most vital trials currently is for Alzheimer’s disease, now underway to test a new drug that shows promise for slowing the relentless progression of memory loss and mental decline in Alzheimer’s patients. The
clinical research study is testing whether this investigational drug can help maintain memory and day-to-day living in people with mild Alzheimer’s disease. There hasn’t been a new drug approved to treat Alzheimer’s in a decade, but researchers are working hard to change that. Ralph W. Richter, MD,
Dr. Ralph W. Richter, founder and president of Tulsa Clinical Research.
FACP, established Tulsa Clinical Research, LLC in 1986. As its founder and current president, Dr. Richter’s experience is unparalleled. He maintains a private practice in neurology and neuropsychiatry. Dr. Richter is also Clinical Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa. In addition to numerous other publications, he is the author of “Alzheimer’s Disease: A Physician’s Guide to Practical Management.” Dementia is an overall term for diseases and conditions characterized by a decline in memory or other thinking skills that affects a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. Dr. Richter shares a few signs that someone may have dementia: being unable to remember things; asking the same question or repeating the same story over and over; becoming lost in familiar places; being unable to follow directions; getting confused about time, people, and places; trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships; new problems with words in speaking or writing; neglecting personal

safety, hygiene, and nutrition; decreased or poor judgment; withdrawal from work or social activities; and changes in mood and personality, including apathy and depression. Everyone experiences a phenomenon called age-related memory loss. As we get older, our memory simply isn’t what it used to be. Many people, however, use this common, normal forgetfulness as an excuse to ignore more serious memory problems. If you have a relative or loved one with whom you’re concerned may have more serious memory problems, observe them for a few weeks; this will help you get a feeling if their memory problems are a normal part of aging, or if it could possibly be something more serious. The trials at Tulsa Clinical Research are sponsored by the National Alzheimer’s Association and the National Institute of Aging. Their goal is to identify those at risk and treat with medication before symptoms become severe. The prevention studies at Tulsa Clinical Research utilize imaging procedures to look at an individual’s brain structure and metabolism to determine if they are at risk to develop Alzheimer’s. “You cannot arrest the disease, but you can slow it down,” says Dr. Richter. “The amount of time between when subtle symptoms of dementia begin and when diagnosis occurs is eight years – that’s a lot of lost time. It is important to begin preventative treatment as early as possible.” According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1 in 9 Americans aged 65 or older has Alzheimer’s disease. An estimated five million
Page 19
people are living with this disease in America, and those numbers will increase as the population ages. “It’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Many other people are facing similar challenges,” Dr. Richter adds. With more than 200 national and international clinical research studies, experience is at the core of Tulsa Clinical Research. The staff of Tulsa Clinical Research is dedicated to excellence in research trials. “With minimal screenfailures, rapid enrollment, optimal compliance, study adherence, and caregiver support, our track record is spotless,” says Dr. Richter. “We strictly follow GCP (Good Clinical Practice) and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) in accordance with FDA regulatory guidelines. Not only do we provide high quality data, our friendly, motivated staff members seek to serve the patient and their family.” Tulsa Clinical Research conducts a large number of other clinical trials including depression, COPD, fibromyalgia, adolescent ADHD, and many more. Pets and Carpet Can Go Together Grigsby’s Carpet, Tile & Rug Gallery offers STAINMASTER® PetProtect carpet designed specifically for people with pets.
By Deanna Rebro
People, pets and carpet will be the focus on October 17 for Adopt-A-Pet Day at Grigsby’s, 4417 S. Sheridan Rd. As part of a nationwide effort to bring together people and pets that needs homes, Grigsby’s Carpet, Tile & Rug Gallery and STAINMASTER® PetProtect® are partnering with the Tulsa SPCA to showcase adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. From 10 until 2, the SPCA mobile adoption center will be at Grigsby’s, with animals both inside the mobile center and inside the store. SPCA adoption counselors will be on hand to answer questions and help select the pet that is just right for your family. Since 1913, the non-profit organization, known as the “senior citizen” among animal rescue groups, has been an icon
in the animal community for its efforts to shelter and find forever homes for dogs and cats. Hundreds are adopted each year from its seven-acre parcel on Mohawk Blvd. SPCA’s outreach through the years has expanded to provide a low-cost vaccination service, an ongoing animal cruelty investigation program, weekly pet visitation to residents in 25 area nursing homes (designed to promote the therapeutic animal-human bond), educational programs on pet care and health, and a safe haven for pets of families during domestic violence episodes. And, of course, there is the mobile adoption center, with space for at least 15 animals to make choosing a new pet more comfortable and convenient. When it comes to carpet
“And for those who are greenconscious, STAINMASTER® PetProtect® lasts longer than traditional carpeting. Since it does not need to be replaced as often, there is less waste in landfills,” adds Penny. “This carpet really does make sense for people with pets and kids.” Grigsby’s 20,000-square-foot showroom also features a large selection of tile, natural stone, laminate floors and countertops, cork, bamboo, hardwood flooring and area rugs from vintage to modern in all shapes, sizes and colors. Their commercial division also features many choices for high-traffic areas that don’t get the TLC of home floor coverings. Trying out a new look in your home is both fun and easy, thanks to Grigsby’s new website, www.grigsbys.com. The website offers a virtual room designer, all based on an uploaded photo of any room in your home. Change colors or change total looks as many times as you wish from wherever you are. Kids and Adults Agree – Corn Maize Doesn’t Shuck
The annual Corn Maize takes place October 2 through November 8 in Broken Arrow.
By Sheryl Sowell A fall family-friendly tradition returns with the annual Tulsa Corn Maize in Broken Arrow, featuring two corn maizes (one haunted), children’s activities, fire pits, paintball and more. The fun takes place Friday, October 2 through Sunday, November 8. Hours are Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 to 10, and Sunday from 1 to 6. Wednesdays will be open for church groups, and Thursdays will be available for other large groups. The maize is also open during the week from 9 to 1 for school field trips. “The Coweta first graders come every year,” says Jack Schlekeway. Jack, aka “Farmer Jack,” builds and operates the maizes each year simply because “so many people love it and would be disappointed if I didn’t!” He also has a lot of fun doing it and loves see the joy on the kids’ faces. Families return year after year for good old-fashioned autumn entertainment. Farmer Jack has been involved with the maize since it first began 14 years ago. The only time the maize hasn’t happened was after the two hot, dry summers a couple years ago when temperatures stayed in the 100s for weeks, preventing the corn from growing. In addition to the regular
corn maize will be a “haunted” maize that begins at dark, complete with costumed spooks jumping out from corners and scaring those brave enough to walk the twists and turns. Children will have a blast with all the fun activities available, including a cow train (a bucket train pulled around by Farmer Jack’s tractor), hayrides, duck races, hay jumps and hay hops, target shooting paintball, and the corn box (a box filled with corn seeds for kids to pile into and
play in). The price of admission includes everything except for paintball target shooting – stop by the “Corn”venient Store to purchase paintballs. Prices are $3 for 50 shots or $5 for 100. Nine fire pits are available for reservation and are always a huge hit with large groups and families. Groups of 15 or more can reserve a fire pit for the entire evening. “Some places charge $20 an hour for a fire pit, so they’re really popular each year,” adds Farmer Jack. You’re invited to bring your
own hot dogs, marshmallows, snacks, and coolers. Farmer Jack provides a supply of fire wood; if groups want more than what is provided, they will need to bring additional wood or purchase more from Jack. A picnic table and stumps for sitting are on hand for each pit, but Farmer Jack encourages groups to bring their lawn chairs. Fire pits must be reserved in advance by calling (918) 232-4299. “You’ll need to call at least 48 hours in advance for a reservation. The fire pits
almost always get booked up early for Fridays and Saturdays.” He also provides two community fire pits for those who haven’t made a reservation and still want to enjoy a toasty fire and tasty smores. Everyone is welcome to bring their own treats to the maize, but the “Corn”venient Store also sells snacks like chips, popcorn, candy, sodas, hot cocoa and smores kits. “I keep my prices around $1 for each item,” says Farmer Jack. The Tulsa Corn Maize is a popular and affordable destination for birthday parties, youth sports team celebrations, Girl Scout gatherings, churches, and family parties. Admission prices are $9 for adults, $7 for children 4 to 12 years old, and 3 and under are free. To get there, simply go east on Kenosha (71st Street) to 321st East Avenue and follow the signs. The event is family friendly; no drinking or smoking is allowed.

Zap Bedbugs with Frostbite Shelia Disler, Justin Buckmaster and Andrea Monks are the bedbug experts at Mother Nature’s, and they have some alarming facts to share. Bedbugs are round, nocturnal insects that subsist on a diet of blood. They snack on mammals, and given the choice, they prefer us humans. Most of the time bedbugs are thin and slightly transparent. Once they’ve dined, they are fat and brown. Because you and I are their favorite snack, they’ve become very adept at hiding in our houses – in beds, cracks in the walls, electrical fittings – anywhere, in fact, where they can get close to us but stay out of sight. Bedbugs aren’t dirty, they don’t spread disease, they
move slowly, and they can’t fly. But when they bite, they make you itch like crazy. “Bedbugs are one of nature’s best hitchhikers,” says Shelia, “and today they are found in even the finest homes, hotels and motels, movie theaters, restaurants, subways and other public transportation. Wherever we go, they go!” (Are you itching yet?) Although you can’t eliminate an infestation of bedbugs yourself, you can enlist professionals to fight the battle. Mother Nature’s has just introduced Frostbite, a sub-zero method of freezing bedbugs on contact. Frostbite is also effective on roaches and other pests. “Frostbite disrupts all life stages
of the bedbug,” says Justin. “We recommend a minimum of five treatments that include Frostbite and other conventional follow-up treatments to eliminate the tiny critters. People don’t realize it, but bedbugs also hide under baseboards, between mattresses, in plastics like kids’ walkers and toys, in suitcases and travel bags and, literally, just about anywhere. We’ve even found them in breathing machines.” Here are some great tips from Andrea to help you reduce the risk of getting bedbugs in your home: When you travel, don’t put your luggage on the bed. Inspect motel rooms prior to “moving in.”

I’m really glad to be the service manager at Jim Glover Chevrolet, and I appreciate the fact that the organization places such a strong emphasis on integrity. With this attitude, business is going to be good and you’re going to make customers happy.” The attitude permeating Jim Glover Chevrolet is to hire talented people and empower them to do their jobs. Technicians are ASE trained and David promotes cross-training with all his service employees, as annual training goals are set for each individual. “Each year GM introduces new training requirements,

UUncorking the Cure for MS The 14th annual dinner and auction benefiting the National MS Society will be October 15 at Cain’s Ballroom.
By Gena Hyde
On Thursday, October 15, the National MS Society will host the 14th annual Uncorking the Cure for MS with a western chic theme at the legendary Cain’s Ballroom. This annual dinner and auction raises funds to fuel progress in MS research, and supports much needed programs and services that help each person living with MS live their best life. Singer, performer and bandleader Cindy Cain was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000. Raised in Pryor, Oklahoma, Cindy honed her vocals and style while living in Washington, D.C. before relocating in 2001 to Tulsa, where she has received many accolades for her work. After years of performing in various venues in Washington, D.C. and Oklahoma, Cindy’s performance schedule has slowed down mainly due to fatigue from her MS. However, she continues to lend her time and talent to raise funds and awareness for multiple sclerosis through events such as Uncorking the Cure for MS and Walk MS. Cindy attended Uncorking the Cure for MS for the first time in 2014 with members of her Walk MS team. She bought tickets as a way to thank her friend and team captain of Violette’s
Vengeance, Donna Leming. “I’ve been touched from the start by Donna’s persistence in raising money for MS research.” Another friend, who also lives with MS and is a volunteer with the National MS Society, encouraged Cindy to become more actively involved in Uncorking the Cure for MS. Cindy is a member for the event’s steering committee and is the featured entertainment with her band. “Working on the steering committee and performing at this year’s Uncorking the Cure for MS is the coalescence of two
threads – a thread of persistence and a thread of advocacy, by others on my behalf. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to share my story if it helps someone else and to say thank you to those who have helped and inspired me,” Cindy said. “Everyone on the MS spectrum – persons living with MS, their family and friends, caregivers, physicians, researchers – needs every bit of persistence and advocacy we can muster.” Uncorking the Cure for MS attendees will enjoy catering by Lambrusco’z to Go, Triumph Cellars Wines, live and silent
auctions, a wine pull, and a special concert by local recording artist Cindy Cain and the Red Hot Pokers. Western chic or cocktail attire is requested. Event information and ticket purchase are available at uncorkingthecureforMSok.org or by contacting Pamela O’Briant at Pamela.BakerOBriant@nmss.org or (405) 463-4863. Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.
Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide. In 2014, the Society invested $50.6 million to advance more than 380 research projects around the world in order to stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost, and end MS forever. Through its comprehensive nationwide network of programs and services, it also helped more than one million people affected by MS connect to the people, information and resources needed to live their best lives.

See It, Make It, Give It OHCE offers a day to learn and share holiday gift ideas Monday, October 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. By Deanna Rebro Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) presents “Happy Holiday Gift Ideas” on Monday, October 26 at the OSU Extension Office, 4116 E. 15th St. in Tulsa, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Eleven food and crafts demonstrations by OHCE members will provide gift ideas that anyone can make and enjoy giving (and receiving). See demonstrations for embroidery, Mason jar and jar ring makeovers, cloth gift baskets, a watercolor greeting card, quilting, a yo-yo mania Christmas tree, a poly mesh wreath, an easy sewing project, jewelry made from wire and two holiday food items. Each demonstration is budget conscious, with several projects featuring repurposed or reinvented items already in your home. A booklet with easy-tofollow instructions, patterns and recipes is included. Kathy Erwin, membership committee chairperson, Tulsa County, says this is a first of what they hope will become an annual event. “We gave this a holiday theme,” she says, “but what is really nice is how most of the projects can be adapted seasonally for any gift-giving occasion.” And
Michelle Bonicelli, Kathy Erwin, and Julaine Farless show some of the items you can learn to make at the Happy Holiday Gift Ideas event. you don’t need prior skill in any area to produce an attractive and welcome gift. If you have always wanted to try our hand at quilting, embroidery or jewelry making, this is the perfect opportunity to learn something new in the company of other ladies united in the same effort. There will be five presentations before a lunch of taco soup and chocolate dessert, and six presentations after
lunch. Cost, including lunch, is $8 per person. Seating is limited so reservations must be made by October 15. “We are proud to serve the community in this unique and special way,” says Kathy. “We want people to get to know us and what we do, and hopefully join one of our seven groups in Tulsa County.” Representatives from each of the groups – Candleliters, Daisies, Eastside, Jenks, Owasso
Pioneers, Southside Neighbors, and Valley View – will be on hand to introduce themselves and the specific community service project they support, which include Happy Hands School for the Deaf, Quilts of Valor, Jenks Food Bank, and Tulsa Count Emergency Shelter. All groups uphold the goal to develop leadership and to promote and extend the best interests of the family, home and community through the associations in all 77
counties. Countywide projects include cultural enrichment, family issues, healthy living, a holiday luncheon, membership, promotional sales, resource management, scholarships, and the Tulsa County Fair. The 80-year-old OHCE grew out of home demonstration clubs who made it their mission to distribute educational information on agricultural and home economics to individuals who did not attend college. Now under the umbrella of OSU Cooperative Extension, sharing information and teaching skills to others is still one of OHCE’s major tenets. Anyone who wants to learn something new on October 26, and have a lot of fun getting into the holiday spirit, should send a check for $8 no later than October 15 to OHCE-TC, 8536 E. 7th St., Tulsa, OK 74112-4810.

RRVs for Everyone Since January 2013, Bob Hurley RV of Tulsa has grown to the top dealer in Oklahoma. By Duane Blankenship Bob Hurley, well-known and respected Oklahoma automotive dealer, partnered with Kim Siex (pronounced “six”) in January of 2013 to launch Bob Hurley RV. Since that time, the pair and their professional staff have far exceeded initial sales plans and personal expectations. Managing Partner Kim says, “Since our opening just a little over two and a half years ago, our growth has been phenomenal, with several expansions including outgrowing our original shop in the first 24 months.” The dealership sells top brand travel trailers, fifth wheels and motor homes, and accessories, and they provide service on any make or model. Kim Siex is a 33-year veteran of the RV industry and started the new venture with just two employees. In the first five months, Bob Hurley RV had grown to 28 employees and
an inventory of over 300 RV units. He has just announced the opening of a 15,000-square-foot PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) facility that will open in January of 2016. The PDI facility will house 26 new bays, bringing the dealership’s total to 54 service bays on the premises. “We will be the only RV dealership in Oklahoma with a PDI facility,” added Kim. The new PDI facility will be the center for completing pre-delivery inspections on all operating systems, plus clean ups to make sure each RV is ready for delivery to the customer. According to Kim, Bob Hurley RV has the largest new and used RV inventory in the state. “We have been recognized as the number one dealer in the nation for our sales of Starcraft, Aerolight by Dutchmen, Sundance and Prowler RV units. We are also recognized as a top

Their models are unique with island kitchens, front living rooms, a choice of several bunk house models and toy hauler options. “In short, there’s a perfect Cougar model for your personal tastes.” Kim Siex is the managing partner for Bob Hurley RV, located just west of The American the Arkansas River on West Skelly Drive in Tulsa. By Carol Beck-Round For the Rogers County Historical Society, the next few months are an exciting time as several events are planned to raise funds for the non-profit organization. The annual Old Home Tour is set for Saturday, October 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring several historic homes in the downtown Claremore area. “The home tour is an important fundraiser for us,” says Morgan Williams, RCHS vice-president. “The homeowners have put a lot of effort into the renovation of these historic homes.” Tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day of the event at the Belvidere Mansion for $12 each. No reservations are required. On October 23 and 24, a murder mystery written by Jessica Ammons is scheduled. “Death Before Dinner” will include an elegant dinner, wine, dessert and the performance on the third floor of
the Belvidere Mansion’s ballroom. Mark Ogle will serve as the Master of Ceremonies, with Grant Driver as director. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Reservations are required. Cost is $50. To reserve your spot, call Patrick Deaver at (918) 688-0651. “This is a completely new murder mystery written especially for the Belvidere,” Deaver says. “A Super Sleuth Award will be presented to the audience member who solves the mystery.” A Downton Abbey Christmas Tea is set for November 24 at 4 p.m. at the Belvidere during Dickens on the Boulevard festivities. Attendees will enjoy sweets and savories as well as hot tea. Cost is $25 and reservations are required by calling (918) 688-0651. “Guests are encouraged to dress in period costumes, but it isn’t necessary,” says Kathy Wilken, Belvidere Tea Room manager. Halloween Activities for Everyone The Castle of Muskogee’s annual Halloween Festival returns with a new event this year – Portal to the Dead. By Renee Profitt
Expect a bigger, better, and more exciting Halloween Festival at the Castle of Muskogee with new scenes, more actors, and new merchants. Enjoy eleven great Halloween events at one incredible location, 3400 West Fern Mountain Road in Muskogee, Oklahoma’s 60-acre Halloween Theme Park! You’ll find thrills for the entire family, both inside and outside The Castle, located a short 35-minute drive from Tulsa on the Muskogee Turnpike. New this year – Portal to the Dead! Ancient hieroglyphics led modern scientists to create “portals” where we can see the spirits of the dead. We can only hope they can’t come through the portal into our world! A big hit when introduced in 2013, the 10,000-square-foot Dark Castle Zombie Hunt will continue in 2015. You will be issued an infrared assault weapon that fires special “Zombie Bullets” to protect yourself and kill Zombies while you search for survivors of the raging Zombie wars inside. Or, try a walk through the woods on the Trail of Blood, where the lost souls of those who have gone before will guide you; the Torture
Chamber shows what really happened in medieval times in the depths of the dungeons; Casa Morte is a labyrinth through the 12th Century Castle with doom and mystery around every corner; Domus Horrificus takes you to the areas where your favorite horror monsters dwell; and in the Ultimate Maze, most of you will find your way, and the rest of you, well… For those of you with faint hearts, there is always the Haunted Hayride, a trip that is sure to keep you on your toes as you ride through the Halloween Festival grounds; the Enchanted Boardwalk is your chance to stroll on the boardwalk filled with Halloween inflatables; experience live entertainment on the Chessboard Stage with the Magic of Matthew VanZee, The Escapologist, and the comedy of the Jester Rejects. For little ones 8 years of age and under, The Halloween Festival hosts Halloween Land – an old-fashioned carnival of kid-friendly games, face painting, and prizes with absolutely no scares! The Halloween Village is the place where everyone experiences the very best of
