Baked to Perfection Honey Baked Ham of Tulsa caters to your needs for the perfect holiday meal. By Duane Blankenship Honey Baked Ham Co. and Cafe of Tulsa does it all to please their customers. This unique business was opened in 2003 and current Owner/Operator Lee Griffin took over the helm in 2010. Families and businesses across the country recognize Honey Baked ham, turkey and specialty products as a superior holiday and everyday choice for families, businesses and clients. Select from packaged products or make your own custom package. The parent company began in the 1940s when founder Harry Hoenselaar patented the perfect final
touch to his gourmet hams: the spiral-slicing process. Harry also had a unique curing and cooking procedure that produced one-of-a-kind, high quality, bone-in smoked hams. He opened his first Honey Baked Ham Co. store in Detroit, Michigan, in 1957. The company is family-owned and Harry’s procedures are still used in preparing products just as he did…one at a time, an element that makes Honey Baked hams and turkeys so different from similar products. Whole Honey Baked Turkeys are also available roasted, smoked, or Cajun style. (continued on page 24)

So Tell Me, What’s On Your Bucket List? BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT Ensuring your finances are aligned with your life goals can be complex and time consuming. I’ve heard every reason in the book as to why folks put it off. Mostly, people find it kind of scary and overwhelming so they avoid it like they avoid a root canal. Our goal is to take the uncertainty out of the equation. We meet with clients, gather information from them about their expenses, savings, and income, and develop solutions and strategies about how to pursue the goal. Our mission is to help you identify your goals, and then design your money around your life. Our proprietary financial planning process called “My Bucket List: Dream.Plan.Do” was designed specifically with our clients in mind. It makes financial planning fun and painless because it is focused on helping you make conscious decisions about what you want your life to look like. We have you focus on your bucket list for your life. What are the things you really want to accomplish? Then, we focus on developing the plan of how to get there. We design your money around your life! We find that the most successful retirees have the frame of mind that they are “retiring to” something. The following are 5 tips to consider before you clock in to work in for the last time! Bucket List #1 Think about how you want to spend your time. It is likely that for the first time in years, you will have a lot of free time on your hands. At first, this is
household and take some of the uncertainty out of retirement.
incredibly appealing. Retirees think about all the things they finally have time to do. However, eventually having a routine helps to normalize the transition. We encourage clients to start “practicing” retirement. Begin trying out hobbies and tasks that are planned for the golden years. Bucket List #2 Begin to redefine your identity. Retirement is an adjustment. “Who am I without a job title and salary?” You are so much more than what you do for an occupation. Take what experiences were gained, and translate that into hobbies. Volunteerism and giving back to your community is thoughtful and rewarding. Start mulling this over before retirement. You will start developing your identity outside of working. Bucket List #3 Complete a financial assessment. We recommend our “My Bucket List. Dream.Plan.Do.” process because it is a fun, action-oriented process to help engage you in consciously defining what you are excited about and your vision for your life. One of the biggest questions pre-retirees have is, “Will I have enough money throughout my retirement?” Doing a personal financial assessment will aid in gauging the needs of your
www.ValueNews.com
Bucket List #4 Do some soul searching. Make a list of a hundred or more things that you would like to do as soon as you enter retirement. New hopes and dreams are crucial during this transition stage in life. The purpose of this is to provide a sense of stability and drive. Bucket List #5 Be proactive about possible changes in relationships. Because you will be spending so much more time at home, there may be changes in the dynamic of your relationship you’re your spouse, children, grandchildren. For some couples, spending 24/7 with their significate other is taxing. There could be some nit picking going on regarding who is in charge of what. Don’t wait for conflict. Define what you would like for this time to look like together; not apart. Retirement is a very exciting phase of life; even more so if you have planned for it, give us a call. We can help. OOnly One Call Away of operators not set properly and most operator failure is the result of a door that needs servicing or replacement. The forces on an operator Garage doors and garage door By Harold Blalock should not exceed the minimal openers work together to control Garage doors are sometimes used force it takes to just open and close as an entry door and operated 10 to access to your garage. What most the door on a 1 to 10 scale. As the 20 cycles a day and are a convenient consumers do not realize is the operator ages and brushes wear interaction between the two and part of our lives, taken for granted, the force must be increased down, how one affects the other. Most until they malfunction. to start the motor. Usually the door replacements are the result force is over specifications as far as the door is concerned, because once the motor is turning with the forces set too high, damage is caused to the door if something is blocking the opening. Likewise if a door is in need of service, the opener must work harder than specified to open and close it. Most Keith Mrozinski and Owner Steve Lewis put the same care and operators have craftsmanship into each custom door. a weak link
Superior Overhead Door guarantees excellent customer service from garage door installation to routine maintenance.
designed to protect more expensive parts like the motor itself. These weak links are stressed when a door is not working properly. Most people will service automobiles and understand the relationship between oil changes, fluid checks, tire rotation and alignment and follow a somewhat schedule to maintain the longevity of said auto. The same care should be given to a garage door and operator: disconnect the operator and run without the door, operator should run smoothly without excess noise. Grinding, jerky or rough running operators should be serviced or replaced, and forces should be set as low as possible. If they are above this setting, they should be turned down until the door will not operate and increased just enough to open and close door. If the forces are higher than 5 the door may need servicing. With the operator disconnected, open and close door. It should open and close smoothly throughout the travel. Rollers should turn with a small amount of resistance. If they are loose or clanking like a train on a track, they may be missing bearings and should be replaced. Hinges need to be checked for loose or missing screws, nuts, cracks or unusual bends. Cables may stretch and should be checked for fraying. Houses expand and contract, wood moves and cracks, so
tracks should be the same distance from doors all the way thru travel. If there is a noticeable difference in spacing, adjustments should be made. The weight of the door when the spring is set correctly should not be heavy or light, it should stay if stopped half way up and not creep up or down. Springs get old, losing their flexibility and may need adjustment for proper balance. All moving parts should be lubricated every 6 months including spring, track, rollers and all hinges, Garage doors and operators will work, to the average person fine, until something breaks or is damaged. In many instances, by the time Superior Overhead Door is called, replacement may be the only option when a service call and routine maintenance could have prevented the situation from happening in the first place. Call Superior Overhead Door for your routine maintenance today!

Brittany will show how to exercise appropriately to optimize results without injury. Pastor Billy Joe recalls the seed that grew into this popular community outreach program. About five years ago the two pastors and their daughter decided to accept a Zumba class challenge, with high-impact dancing as well as a personal trainer. “There I was, the only man,” he chuckles. “But I really got into it and had a good time.” Mom and daughter could not agree more. About the same time, a nurse in the congregation approached Pastor Billy Joe about her dream of someday creating a wellness program within the church. She saw a means to educate and empower people to live a healthy lifestyle each day. The pastor saw how the idea fit into the church’s ten-point master plan that includes training people on wellness issues that relate to good health. Several other nurses immediately got on board. They all acted upon that
feeling that was deep within their hearts. They wanted to become healthy and fit and wanted to help others do the same. To date, Pastor Billy Joe has lost 21 pounds. Pastor Theresa is unstoppable with her own Vision Mondays at the church and popular women’s ministry on living a Godly life in today’s challenging world. Daughter Brittany went on to achieve professional status in women’s body building and is now training for worldrenowned competitions. Transforming Lives for Over 20 years Crossroads Clubhouse sets annual open house for October 20.
By Scott McClung It’s a night of fun, awareness, and appreciation. Crossroads Clubhouse, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing hope and opportunities for Tulsa area adults living with mental illness, will host an Open House on October 20 from 4:00-7:00 p.m, at 1888 E. 15th St. There will be light hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and live music by The Scis-
sortails. There will also be guided tours of Crossroads, with Program Coordinators on hand to answer questions about Employment, Education, Housing, Culinary, and Wellness Programs. The event is free and open to the public. The annual event serves two purposes: to thank donors, grant makers, referral sources, student interns, and volunteers, and to educate the general public as well
as prospective members and their families about the services offered. With a considerable spotlight on funding for mental healthcare in Oklahoma, it’s important to play a part. Crossroads is not a treatment facility and offers no such services. As an accredited member of Clubhouse International (iccd. org), which oversees the operations of over 340 Clubhouses worldwide, Crossroads is the other half of the

mental health equation, helping members to reach and sustain their full potential. This is how its members transcend stigma and live a life in which he or she is a person, not an illness. Crossroads is celebrating its 21st year of service to the Tulsa area. Their central location means easy access for members, many of whom use the bus system or The Lift. Their Transitional Employment (TE) Program is a partnership with local businesses, including Reasor’s, Marshall’s, and the Altamont Bakery at B’nai Emunah Synagogue. In TE, Crossroads turns members into employees who earn respectable incomes and contribute to the local economy. Employment Coordinator Lily Leffall said, “One of the beauties of TE is that an employee (Crossroads member) is covered if for some reason he or she can’t go to work on a certain day. A staff member learns the position, and we are the ones who train them, not the employer. So the employer does not have to go through the training process.” The Crossroads Housing Program has placed many members in safe, affordable homes. Eight homeless members gained housing last year, while another ten who were in danger of losing their homes received funding to pay rent. Members who seek to com-
plete a degree or begin studies altogether can benefit from the Education Program, which offers field trips to college and technical campuses in the Tulsa area. Crossroads is a good steward of personal and environmental wellness. Members can assist the Culinary Unit in preparing daily lunches and tending to the Garden of Hope, which was recently named a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat as well as a Monarch Waystation. Crossroads’ monthly Saturday Socials include movies, cultural festivals, and many other fun events. Find out more about Crossroads Clubhouse. Drop by for lunch and a tour at 12 noon, Monday through Friday. Visit online at www.crossroadsok.org. See you on October 20!

Authentic Bavarian and Tulsa Culture The 2016 Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa celebrates local bier October 20-23
By Erica Ludwig A beloved Tulsa tradition is back for a 38th year. The 2016 Linde Oktoberfest will take place October 20-23. Tulsa’s largest festival is located at River West Festival Park on the west bank of the beautiful Arkansas River, and offers four days of authentic German celebration, including live music, games and, of course, food and drinks, among number other attractions. Admission is $7 in advance and $10 at the gate for adults and free for children 12 and under. The Autobahn Pass and other ticket packages are available online, allowing patrons to purchase admission and festival money ahead of time and bypass lines. On Family Friday, admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival offers unlimited rides from noon to 6 p.m. with the purchase of a $20 All-Rides Wristband. Paid parking is available near the festival grounds at $10 and $20, or patrons can ride the free shuttles, which run three routes through downtown, midtown and south Tulsa, near alternative parking areas. “The sense of community is what Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa is known for,” says Festival Director
Tonja Carrigg. At this festival, there are no strangers and every participant can enjoy meeting new friends over good food, drink and entertainment.” Live music is always a favorite. Festival goers can expect German bands, country-western artists, oldtime rock, and dancing as entertainment for the festival. Also making it’s return is the Glockenspiel. The Glockenspiel is a two-story, giant life-sized kuckoo clock. Every hour on the hour, actors come out onto the second floor balcony and perform entertaining skits and then chime in the hour in ways only imaginable by Das Glockenspiel. A bar with adult beverages will also greet customers on the lower level. New to Oktoberfest is the OK Hoptoberfest Zelt. This tent featuring seven Oklahoma-based breweries is a celebration to local bier. Brands included in the tent include: Anthem Brewing Company, Hanson Brewing Company, Renaissance Brewing Company, Dead Armadillo Craft Brewing, Nothing’s Left Brewing Co., COOP Ale Works and 405 Brewing Co. Wine, mixed drinks and non-alcoholic beverages also will be served.

HHoliday Ready from Head to Toe Nail technician Debbie Edmonds and the rest of the Reveal Salon staff provide consultations in all services for guaranteed customer satisfaction.
By Erica Ludwig
nails that have been unkempt, brittleness and discoloration make for unsightly nails and can ruin your entire look. Quality is important in finding a manicurist. Stopping into a random nail salon can be risky. How experienced is the person
doing your nails? Do you leave with pain under your nails, or cuts along your cuticles? Salons that don’t have high sanitary and cleaning standards can lead to infections and discomfort. Debbie Edmonds of Reveal Salon & Aesthetics has a long list of faithful clients that show this is not the case for her services. “Debbie has so many clients that have stuck with her,” says Owner and Esthetician Nicole McGinnis. “ I think that just shows not only her character but her care and dedication to her clients.” Debbie has 30+ years of experience as a nail technician, and many of her clients stayed with her since she began. She has been at Reveal for the past four years, and says her clients enjoy the pleasant, clean atmosphere of the salon. She provides women and men of all ages services including manicures, pedicures, acrylic nails and Shellac. She also uses solar Debbie Edmonds, nail technician at Reveal Salon & Aesthetics.
Fall is finally here and nothing ushers in a new season better than a new look. Whether trying something new, or just wanting to look good for holiday parties and events, always start with the base: your nails. Chipped polish,
oil for dry nails to get them back in good shape. “Shellac is a popular option because it allows you to grow your natural nails, and it comes in a variety of colors. The polish stays on for two weeks without chipping, about half of my clientel has it,” Debbie said. In addition to Debbie’s practices of cleanliness and sanitation, her gentle hands, and the salon’s pleasant atmosphere, another benefit to becoming her client is that she truly takes the time to get to know you and develop a relationship. “I enjoy my work, and my clients become my friends. We talk about our lives, our work and our families,” she says. “I learn their preferences and what services they like. I also get to know my clients’ skin, and have even found skin cancer spots before and recommended seeing a doctor.” Nail services are not simply about looking good – they are important for the health of your hands and feet as well. Debbie and her husband Troy, who is a stylist at Reveal, have been married for 43 years. The couple has two children and five grandchildren. Debbie says many of her clients will schedule
appointments to have their nails done, followed up by a haircut from Troy. Nicole McGinnis, salon owner and licensed aesthetician, provides a variety of skin care services at Reveal, including solutions for anti-aging and acne, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, custom corrective facials, and OxyGeneo, a breakthrough anti-aging treatment that oxygenates skin from within while exfoliating and infusing it with potent regenerating nutrients. The Reveal team also includes six other stylists and a master barber. The entire staff offers consultations in all services for those who aren’t quite decided about a new look. The salon has been voted Best in the World by Tulsa World Weekend readers in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Will Rogers Days Plans Expansion Will Rogers Museum to combine events with Claremore and Rogers County November 3-6.
By Pat Reeder Will Rogers Memorial Museum opened Nov. 4, 1938, three years after the death of the man who still remains Oklahoma’s most recognizable native. Thousands of people dotted the hillside of the Memorial, streets were teeming with horses and floats for a giant parade — and there was gridlock on the highway between Tulsa and Claremore. Will Rogers Days have been observed every year since that date except for early war years. “Today events surrounding November 4, the date of Will’s birth on an Indian Territory ranch near Oologah, remain one of the state’s largest Will Rogers events,” said Tad Jones, Museum executive director. Plans are underway to combine a number of events going on in Claremore and all of Rogers County during Will Rogers Days Nov. 3-6, with Museum activities to return the celebration to the excitement of those days. From the Pumpkin Festival at Shepherd’s Cross and plans for downtown Oologah and the Birthplace Ranch to the J.M Davis Arms & Historical Museum, downtown Claremore and up Will Rogers Boulevard to Art on the Hill and the 19th Annual Native American Festival at Rogers State University,
Will Rogers Memorial’s celebration of Will Rogers Days will be multiday festivities at the Museum and throughout the community. “Will was always about community,” Jones said. “He wrote about coming home to family gatherings and feasts, visiting in downtown Claremore, Oologah and Chelsea, and going to rodeos and ropings.” The Will Rogers Days finale will be a parade down the street named for him in 1948 and the American Cowboys Rodeo Association Finals at the Claremore Expo Center. Palomino Horse Breeders Heritage Foundation, with Todd Branson riding a Palomino, will lead the Sunday afternoon parade. In 1948, the same year a Will Rogers three-cent commemorative stamp was issued, more than 100 members of the Palomino Association rode in the parade on onto the grounds where 69 mounted riders (in honor of Will’s 69th birthday) rode down the steps to the Rogers’ family tomb and placed a wreath. Comanche, one of Will’s favorite mounts, was a Palomino. Branson will ride to the tomb at 12:30 p.m. prior to the parade and with members of the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club; place a wreath at the tomb. Family members, friends of Will, actors, sports
stars, Indian chiefs, politicians, bands, the famous and infamous have participated in Will Rogers Days in the past 78 years. The one constant — every year since the Museum opened, the Pocahontas Club, founded in 1899, has place a wreath at the tomb in honor of the friend and neighbor they accepted as an honorary member. Will Rogers Days Special events include: — Pumpkin Festival, Shepherd’s Cross, Sept. 22 through Nov. 5 — Christmas at the Belvidere, Nov. 3-5 — Children’s Day at the Museum, Nov. 3 (featuring Kowboy Kal) — Birthday Party at the Ranch, Nov. 4 (featuring Kowboy Kal and Oologah elementary students) — Art on the Hill, Rogers State University, Nov. 5-6 — American Cowboys Rodeo Association Finals, Nov. 3-6 — Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club, Hats Off to Will Gala, Nov. 5 — Native American Festival, Powwow, Rogers State University, Nov. 5 — Street Shopping, Oologah Cooweescoowee Avenue, Nov. 5 — First Saturday Claremore downtown shopping, Nov. 5
Mary Thompson, ranch wife and longtime member of Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club, and Todd Branson, Palomino Horse Breeders Heritage Foundation, will return to the Rogers tomb on Sunday, Nov. 5. — J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum Shootout, Nov. 5 — Route 66 Cruisers Car Show, Will Rogers Memorial Museum, Nov. 5 — Pony Express Ride, Sunday, Nov. 6 — Will Rogers Days Parade, 2 p.m. Sunday Nov. 6

AA Charitable Tradition The ESA Benefit Craft Show will be Saturday, October 29 at Oliver Middle School in Broken Arrow. By Bev Schwarzkopf
Epsilon Sigma Alpha in Broken Arrow will be hosting their 44th annual Benefit Craft Show for October 29. This popular tradition, at Oliver Middle School, located at 3100 West New Orleans, is from 9-4 p.m. The show will feature handmade items from talented regional crafters, whose products you’ll be proud to display in your home or give as special gifts. Best of all, the philanthropic sorority’s proceeds will be donated to charities and nonprofits. Admission and parking are free, and hot food will be available. A silent auction and a book sale will add to the fun-filled day. Alpha Rho Chapter members take pride in the
responsibility to designate funding to groups in the Tulsa/Broken Arrow area. Groups that benefit from the craft show include Meals on Wheels, Broken Arrow Neighbors, Oklahoma Schools for the Deaf and Blind, Clarehouse, Easter Seals and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. ESA’s more then 40 years of association with St. Jude Hospital provides significant money to a special institution leading the way in fighting childhood cancer. Great strides have been made there to find cures, and no family has to pay for treatment. Several Alpha Rho members traveled to Memphis in March for “Thank You ESA Day” at St.
Jude Hospital. When asked about the experience, Eileen Wiley responded, “ I was so glad I went. shops for crafts, décor, clothing, and delightful entertainment for the entire family! Much more than a Haunted House, the Castle provides an array of thrills between 11 different attractions. Their goal is to create one-of-a-kind memories of fun and adventure to everyone; Guests and Cast alike! New This Year: The Halloween Train! Guests may board

from the Depot (located in the Castle Village) and enjoy a ride throughout the festive sites of the not-so-scary grounds. Families are encouraged to plan a trip to Halloween Land, a carnival themed area which is ideal for our younger castle goers. Activities include kidfriendly games, face painting, and prizes with absolutely no scares! For those of you with faint hearts, there is always the Haunted Hayride, a trip that is sure to keep you on your toes as you ride through the Castle countryside; the Enchanted Boardwalk is your chance to discover the magic of the Woodlands, which also features over 200 Halloween inflatables; experience live entertainment on the Chessboard Stage with the Magic of Matthew VanZee and the comedy of the Jester Rejects. Back by request, but new to October…

Jack Sparrow will be entertaining on stage as well as gallivanting throughout the Castle Village. Within the Castle walls, guests can relive the doom of the dark ages by touring the Torture Chamber or daring a stroll through Casa Morte… translated to House of the Dead, this 12th Century labyrinth provides horror and menacing spirits around every corner. Looking to revisit the nightmare-inducing stars of the Silver screen? Be sure to plan a trip to Domus Horrificus, which takes you to the depths where your favorite monsters dwell; and in the Ultimate Maze, most of you will find your way, and the rest of you, well... Looking for a Bone-chilling scare? Venture into the depths of the Castle grounds and test your fear factor on the Trail of Blood. As a staple of the Castle’s Halloween Festival, we have redefined the possibilities and added new menacing creatures to this wooded walk. Guests may gather courage before entrance or count survivors afterwards at the trail’s pub, The Rack. The hideaway’s host, Elvira, may not offer sanctuary from the trail’s ghouls, but she’ll be there to
serve up drinks and entertaining tales before the return to Castle Village. If you’re looking for immersion scares, we suggest the Dark Tower Zombie Hunt, where your mission and weapons are given, but it’s up to you to clear the area of Zombies and rescue survivors. Parking and admission to the Halloween Village is FREE. Tickets must be purchased for each attraction and prices range from $3.00 to $15.00 with Combo Specials available. Advance tickets may be purchased on-line. Go to the castles website to check out pricing, combo packages and details on attractions. In this family friendly environment, unaccompanied minors must have a photo ID to enter.

they always have a fun time vying for ‘bragging rights’ following each outing.” This year’s Sporting Clay event will include 12 stations. Entry fee for 100 clays is $125 per individual or $400 per four-man team. Each shooter will receive 100 clays and must provide their own eye and ear protection, a range requirement. Each participant must also provide their own shotgun in the gauge of choice plus four boxes of shot shells. If a shooter desires, he or she may buy up to two mulligans at a cost of $10 each. If you plan to buy mulligans, be sure to bring extra shot shells. And if you’re clueless as to what a mulligan is, it’s a missed shot that, against the rules, a participant is allowed to take again. Or, simply put, a little insurance! Shooters may also participate in an additional shooting event called a flurry. The flurry competition is $25 per shooter. Each person will be given five clay targets released in rapid succession. The obvious goal is to break as many as you can! Prior to kicking off the Sporting Clay Shoot festivities and competition, each participant will be required to attend a Shooter Safety Meeting. A continental breakfast and lunch is covered by your registration fee, and there will be soft beverage stations throughout
the clays course. Award plaques will be presented to the top three teams, Best Senior Shooter, High Overall Shooter, and the Best Flurry Shooter. The Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors multiple and diverse events each year and is the 450+ member voice of business in the Claremore community. They are an official private, non-profit corporation functioning since 1927. The Chamber offers a variety of services with the common goal of promoting a healthy economic atmosphere while preserving the excellent quality of life residents enjoy in Claremore. Support your Claremore Area Chamber by being a participant! Sign up for the first ever Sporting Clay Shoot on Friday, October 28.
