Beyond the Stars Tulsa’s favorite pub grub spot, Full Moon Café, to expand menu and locations. By Kristi Roe-Owen
General Manager Christina Baker serves up a wide range of craft and local beers.
Full Moon Café is a perennial Tulsa favorite that’s getting a long awaited makeover, thanks to a team of gifted restaurant veterans under the charge of Barrett Byrd. In a world overpopulated by mind-bogglingly complex artisan foods and mashups, Full Moon Café has always been an oasis of rib-sticking crowdpleasers in a chill, less than pretentious atmosphere. Full Moon is known for its “pub grub,” the kind of game day fare that pairs well with a midday pint or drinks with friends. The restaurant came under new ownership in January 2016, when it was purchased by Healthy & Tasty Brands, headed by CEO Keith Wilkerson of Skiatook. The company purchases Tulsa restaurants with the goal of improving and repeating them as franchisable (continued on page 22)
The Gleam Guard Dust Free Wood Refinishing process will transform your kitchen in as little as a day – with no odor or extra preparation. By Erica Ludwig Cabinets are the most visible and most used element of your kitchen. While their purpose is functional, they remain a focal point of the home. The kids are getting ready for back-to-school with new supplies and clothes, why not treat your kitchen too? Whether your cabinets are in extremely rough shape, have only a few smudges or are covered in thick grease from years of cooking, Gleam Guard Dust Free Wood Refinishing is the quick, clean, odor-free, reasonably-priced and highly effective solution. “We can refinish cabinets that are in really bad shape. We can also clean your cabinets and give them a new, permanent finish,” says owner Tracy Booth. “The Gleam Guard finishes are
available in either shiny or satin. When we apply our Gleam Guard system, it bonds to the original finish and makes the surface smooth and dry. The process remarkably enhances wood grain and keeps it looking oiled and polished. Old imperfections cannot be seen. This is an ultra low odor process; it is completely safe for even those with serious breathing problems to be in the house.” The only thing you need to do to prepare for the Gleam Guard team is open your door and let them in your kitchen. “In other words, there is no need to empty your cabinets, remove cabinet hardware, cover your furniture or anything else – we take care of it all,” said Tracy. ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
How Do You Teach Kids About Money?
www.bmw.com
BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT As a business owner and a parent, I can’t tell you enough how important it is to teach your children about money. Schools are burdened with far too many requirements these days. However, personal finance is a topic that is often overlooked in the curriculum. Children are capable of learning money skills from a very early age. The following are some guidelines of skills you can teach them at different stages. Five and Under Begin by letting your little ones help out with simple chores around the house. They can help pick up toys, carry their plate to the sink, help take care of family pets, and help set the table. Children intrinsically love to “help” at this age, which is a blessing. However, you might consider letting them earn a few cents for doing “extra chores” in order to send the message that work=earning money. I remember that my five year old loved to organize my Tupperware cabinet for “extra money.” Not only did this help develop his problem solving skills, but also gave him a sense of how valuable it was to earn money. Children at the latter part of this stage are also capable of learning to count and recognize different denominations of coins and dollar bills. Six to Ten This is a great stage to continue building the “learn to earn” muscle. Allow your kids lots of opportunities to make extra money by doing extra chores. We always had “family chores” that everyone had to do just because that’s part of being a family and “extra chores” that they could choose to make money to buy things that they wanted. In addition, it’s a great time to teach a child the difference between “a want” and “a need.” Needs are the very basics. Food to eat, clothes to wear, and a roof over their head are needs. The newest Nike shoes and Apple iPhone 6 are wants. Don’t let them get too big for their britches. Help them learn to differentiate between the two. (As a side note….this is a lesson I’ve noticed a lot of adults have difficulty with, as well) Eleven to Seventeen By this developmental stage, there are

multiple skills to be mastered. Teach your child how to write a check, how to balance a check ledger, how to create a budget, and how to prioritize wants and needs. Require them to assist you in paying bills and entering your expenses in Quickbooks. Be a good role model. Help them to look for ways to earn money outside of the household (weeding neighbors flower beds, mowing lawns, walking dogs, working at McDonalds or Snow cone huts, or babysitting). Encourage saving/investing 30% of everything they make. Visit your local bank and open a savings account with them. If you have a financial advisor, encourage them to attend your appointment with you to learn about investing. Allow them to spend money on items they “want” so they understand how it feels to be able to purchase something with money they have earned. Lastly, help them to value helping others and giving 10% of what they earn. You must be an active participant in teaching your children about money. Teaching them to be responsible in their earning, spending and saving will help them become successful adults. There is a monetary prize for the winner, but according to Dell Davis, president and CEO of Claremore Chamber of Commerce, the winner will automatically qualify to go on to the ICS World Chili Cook-Off, and this is what attracts competitors. “The money is inconsequential to these competitors,” says Dell. “They want a place in the World
Cook-Off, because there are only so many sanctioned cook-offs and this guarantees you a spot.” Applications are now available for ICS and other category entries, like the non-profit division, in which non-profit organizations like churches and ball teams can enter and win $1000 for their organization. There is also a corporate division, where local businesses compete for “bragging rights.” For fun, there will also be an open division. “We lovingly call the Open the ‘Road Kill Division,’” Dell Davis
“This was a lot of fun last year,” says Dell, who hopes that other groups assemble a team, sign up, and start working on their outhouses. “The police and fire are already planning their incredible outhouses—for speed, looks, and whatever else. Something about ‘wiping out the competition.’” This combination of formal and informal competition, along with an impressive line-up of all types of music and activities, are all part of a consistently well executed plan that keeps people from a multi-state area coming back year after year to experience the Bluegrass and Chili Festival in Claremore, Oklahoma. Festival sponsors include: City of Claremore, KOTV News on 6, Big Country 99.5, Armco Building/ Derickson Portable Building and the Claremore Chamber of Commerce. Start planning your own contribution to this great community and family friendly event today.

ASK MELLA AT MY CHOICE REAL TIPS FOR SENIORS LIVING INDEPENDENTLY
Home Care vs Home Health Home Care and Home Health are different types of care which are both provided at home. The key difference between these two types of care is that “home care” is non-medical care and “home health” is medical care. Home care is provided by caregivers who are trained to understand the nuances of senior care. Caregivers help older adults with activities of daily living or just some friendly companionship. Home care is classified as companion care and is considered non-medical. Reasons to hire a caregiver include: • Needing assistance with daily living including standby shower, meal preparation, medication reminders, dressing, light housekeeping • Not driving and require transportation, assistance going to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, paying bills • Live alone, may be at risk for social isolation and loneliness Home care can be covered by Long Term Care
insurance, which is a separate insurance plan you purchase just for this need or the cost is paid for out of pocket. Only very low income seniors will qualify for home care assistance with Medicaid. Seniors who want to live in their own home in their golden years might consider a reverse mortgage to free up the equity in their home to pay for home care. Reverse mortgage lenders will carefully review your home asset, your age and care needs, to determine if this is a good option for you. Home Health is medical care provided by a nurse, physical therapist or other skilled medical professional and is prescribed as part of a medical care plan following hospitalization. Home Health includes: • Skilled nursing, injections, wound care • Medical tests • Administration of medications Home health is considered medical care and

is covered by medical insurance including Medicare and Medicaid. It must be prescribed by your doctor. For more information contact:

Our donors are often people who are trying to supplement incomes, people like teachers or stay-at-home parents who want to earn extra income for vacations or for holidays, while also doing something positive to help others,” said Interim Center Manager Steven Ables. “Our donors spend about an hour, as often as twice a week, in our centers to help save someone’s life or improve the quality of it, and so they are compensated for their commitment to the program.” BioLife prides itself on it’s excellence in plasma collecting and customer service. Their goal is for donors to be able to donate in a safe, clean, familyoriented environment. Beyond the Stars concepts. White Flag, a favorite East End spot, is Healthy & Tasty’s most recent purchase. Director of Operations Barrett Byrd, who boasts an impressive restaurant service industry résumé, is overseeing the regional reboot. His veteran experience in both corporate and smaller, family-owned restaurants has gifted him with a unique perspective. He has a talent for opening new stores and improving operations for existing restaurants in need of a little help. Since its 1987 opening on Cherry Street, Full Moon has been a favorite hangout for a wide demographic. Patrons quickly came to appreciate the downto-earth venue as a spot to check out local music. Plans to open several loca-
tions are in the works, with an ultimate goal of 3 to 5 restaurants in the Tulsa metro area. “The goal is to take what Full Moon Café has always done best and make it even better,” Byrd explains, a goal that includes streamlining the menu to timeproven favorites with some muchneeded updates. The updated menu features hearty pub fare Oklahomans have come to love with a few new additions, including some White Flag favorites: white cheddar cheese curds, beer battered french fries, handmade creamy tomato soup, and a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich to impress even the biggest connoisseur du fromage with its congress of cheeses on artisan bread. The pub grub menu offers
smaller portions and an opportunity to sample a wider range of the Full Moon menu. Byrd recommends checking out house favorites like the pulled pork slider--a creation of shredded pork, onion straws, and barbecue sauce-or the “infamous” Trashy Taco, seasoned ground beef topped with queso, fresh Romaine, Monterey Jack, cheddar cheese, and pico de gallo. But the most intriguing item is a family recipe passed down from Byrd’s mother and grandmother complete with secret ingredients. His meatloaf slider will be one of four sliders available. “Everyone sits at the bar and argues about their favorite slider or taco,” Byrd laughs. The new menu will also include Full Moon’s renowned
hearty tortilla soup and margarita salad, two of its classic favorites. Pinterest is filled with copycat versions of the beloved, award-winning tortilla soup. Full Moon also offers a comprehensive and well-curated beer menu, with 30 beers on tap. The wide range of hoppy delights focuses on craft and local breweries. The full event calendar includes Karaoke Nights, Motorcycle Mondays, Burger Night, Taco Night and Pint Night. Most evenings will feature live music, often from longtime Tulsa favorites Mark Bruner and Shelby Eicher or Ayngel and John of Zodiac. A piano show hails back to the old Cherry Street days. “We want to get back to that feel where there’s always something to do at Full Moon,” Byrd
