ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Layoffs: Coping with Fear, Anger and Money BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
As oil and gas prices drop, many Oklahomans fear for their jobs. The anticipation of what’s to come makes fear and anxiety soar. All of us have a need for certainty in our lives. When we are faced with uncertainty in our jobs, it threatens our financial security and our family. It often leaves folks feeling powerless, scared and angry. It’s normal to have those feelings but important to remember that you don’t have to let your circumstances control and define you. While you may not have control of the circumstances, you have control over your own mind. Certainty comes from inside you, not from what has happened to you. Your thoughts, your feelings and your response are all up to you. You can begin to take control by developing a plan for your finances and creating a positive outlook for your future.
Revisit your Budget. Look at what is really a necessity and what you can cut back on. It may require a temporary change in lifestyle and expectations. For example, shelter, food and transportation are necessities. Fine dining, $5,000 mortgages and Porsche payments are not. Be practical and realistic. Apply for Unemployment and Prepare Your Résumé. Begin right away by utilizing your personal and professional networks for new opportunities. Get that résumé up to speed and start sending it out as soon as possible.

Reputation Through the Roof After 47 Years in Business
If you’re in the market for a new metal roof, Lucas Metal Works is highly regarded name in the industry. Metal offers a number of advantages over other roofing materials. By Sheryl Sowell Lucas Metal Work’s Metal Roofing and Metal Buildings products are used every single day in all industries. Over the past 47 years, the company has developed a stellar reputation across Oklahoma and the Midwest, offering the highest quality products and impeccable customer service. What many people may not know, however, is that residential customers can bring this same excellence to their own homes with Lucas metal roofing and metal buildings. Metal roofs have a number of advantages over other types of roofing materials. They not only look sleek and polished, thus increasing a home’s curb appeal, they are also highly energy-efficient and long-lasting. “Our metal roofs are guaranteed to last a long time, much longer than standard roofing materials – we offer a 40-year warranty,” says Tammy Laakso, marketing and sales manager for Lucas Metal Works. “The large selection of options is another advantage. Our 26 gauge metal panels are available in 16 different colors.”
Metal roofs are highly durable, which is critical in the ever-changing weather landscape of Oklahoma, where within a few weeks it’s possible to see snow, ice, sleet, sun, rain, high winds and tornadoes. Lucas Metal Works also serves residential customers with the addition of metal buildings to their properties. “Metal buildings are great for storage space or work space. We have many customers who purchase metal buildings for hobbies and storing cars, airplanes, boats and RVs. Metal buildings are also used as greenhouses,” says Tammy. “The vinyl insulation used on the inside of the metal buildings keeps the noise factor down while being energy efficient. These affordable buildings are a useful and sound investment to add to your property.” Tammy says that in addition to their top-tier products and talented team of professionals, what sets Lucas Metal Works apart is the strong relationship they maintain with their customers. “Lucas has been a trusted, re-
spected name in the industry for almost five decades. We work closely with our customers from start to finish and beyond.” In 1968, Raymond Lucas started up a small custom metal works shop, and it was not long before his ideas outgrew his humble Jerry, Lucas Metal Works employee, hard at work. space. for Tree Shield S&W Tree Specialists’ new service offers quick service for Oklahoma’s unpredictable weather.
By Christopher Davis “You never can tell with Oklahoma weather,” says Leilani Hughes, who co-owns S&W Tree Specialists with her parents, her husband, Dale Hughes, and her brothers, Bryan Merseburgh and Robby Mizumura. The family owned and operated tree service has seen it all. And after this last winter our state has experienced, there are
only two safe predictions about the upcoming seasons: it will be hot and there will be storms. “Our customers are our top priority,” says Leilani. S&W services all of the greater Tulsa area, from Muskogee to Mannford and Oologah to Bixby. S&W gains business by word of mouth for the most part, from satisfied
customers to their families and to their businesses. S&W covers all realms of the tree care field. With such unpredictable weather as Oklahoma has, S&W has introduced a new service called Tree Shield, for the environmental and safety-conscious person. For a fixed monthly rate, S&W Tree Specialists will tailor a service plan

to the needs of the property. “Tree Shield works great for apartment complexes and large properties,” explains Hughes. Industrial and commercial lots, as well as home owners who run rental properties, are also well-suited for the program. When a customer signs up for the annual Tree Shield contract, they lock in a deal based on winter rates. “This time of year, the landscape companies are raising rates – it’s the busiest season,” explains Hughes. “When a customer signs up with Tree Shield, they not only get a bargain on hourly rates, but they’ll get priority when a storm hits.” Whenever a tornado, microburst or bad thunderstorm comes through, everyone rushes to call in tree service companies and things get even busier. With Tree Shield, you’re already on the schedule. And since tree specialists have been regularly maintaining the property, it is likely that storm damage will not be nearly as bad as it would have been otherwise. Co-owner Dale Hughes, a certified arborist with the ISA (International Society of Arborculture), leads S&W in tree pruning and maintenance, which can be a mix of proactive and reactive service. “Reducing – where you selectively remove only about a third of the tree – is one thing, but tree topping is bad for the trees.” Hughes says taking out too much of the tree will compromise the foliage, and prevent it from staying healthy and strong enough to survive, let alone withstand an Oklahoma storm. Of course, if a storm does take out branches, safe and swift removal is needed. S&W excels

in this department. Providing 24hour emergency service, the company is ready for anything. With a fleet of powerful utility trucks and all the right tools, they take a near disaster and create a safe zone. Though S&W is wellequipped for extreme situations, they also handle routine maintenance. Services provided include seasonal tree trimmings and feedings, lawn pre- and postemergent, and fertilizing. The company prides itself on offering the best service at competitive rates, with attention to the specific needs of a property. Based in Coweta, S&W Tree Specialists serves a client base that extends from Muskogee to Mannford and from Oologah to Bixby. S&W has a proven record of handling high-profile landscapes and urban forests, with an account roster that includes FedEx, Brookhaven and St. John’s. Customers can count on S&W Tree Specialists to keep trees and landscapes green and healthy. With spring in full bloom, now is the time to make sure every step is taken to protect your plants for the year with Tree Shield.

Make Strides Toward a World Free of MS M Walk MS Tulsa builds new connections at new location.
By Christopher Davis “Multiple sclerosis is a disease that destroys connections. Walk MS builds connections,” says Sarah Flowers, development manager at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Oklahoma. On Saturday, May 2, the National MS Society hosts Walk MS at Tulsa Community College’s southeast campus. The event serves as a vehicle for fundraising and community support for those affected by MS. At its core, MS is an immunemediated disease involving the deterioration of nerve fibers. The damaged nerve fibers develop scar tissue (sclerosis), which disrupts communications in the central nervous system and produces a diverse range of symptoms, from numb, tingling or weakened limbs to blurred vision, slurred speech and trembling. In short, MS stops people from moving. In keeping with the theme of building new connections, Walk MS is a call to action: keep moving forward and together we can work to find a cure. “Walk MS is a great event that brings people together,” says Flowers. “For those living with MS, as well as loved ones who support them, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness and meet others who are fighting the disease.”
In previous years, Walk MS was held at Veterans Park. This year, the event has partnered with Tulsa Community College to establish a larger and more convenient site for participants and vendors. “We’re excited to bring Walk MS to TCC this year,” says Flowers. “The campus will allow room for the event to grow.” Last year, Walk MS brought about 900 participants. This year, Flowers expects to break 1,000. In the past, parking was a challenge for participants and vendors alike.
TCC’s southeast campus, located just off Highway 169 and 81st Street, offers an ideal setting for the event. The sprawling campus, which hosts a segment of the Mingo Valley Trail, provides plenty of space for a walking path to be marked for the event. Even better, there will be ample parking for everyone and easy access for friends and family to line up along the path to cheer on the participants. Walk MS will set up its main booths outside the VanTrease PACE auditorium (located on the east side of campus, facing Highway 169). In addition to on-site registration, attendees can
look forward to food and drink, as well as Blue Bell ice cream. There will also be activities for the kids, including inflatables and face painting. Also, MidFirst Bank is sponsoring a coin drive to help with fundraising. If $750 is raised at the event, then the bank will match the donations – so be sure to search the couch cushions, empty your pockets and gather up the change in your car’s ashtray! The event will also host Expo MS, which features booths from community and industry partners. Some of the organizations will offer information and resources for those affected by MS,
while others specialize in mobility technology. As attendees peruse the booths and collect information, they can enter for chances to win giveaways. Online registration is encouraged, and can be found through the NMSS website or by going to www.WalkMS.org and entering your zip code in the search bar. Once registered, be sure to save the link in your bookmarks. NMSS makes it easy to begin spreading the word and fundraising. Each participant has the ability to personalize their page with their own story and photos. Additionally, the website provides a wealth of resources related to MS – statistics, research and more. Walk MS begins at 9 a.m. with breakfast, last-minute registration and participant check-in. The walk begins at 10 am. Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of the strides made toward a world free of MS. For more information, contact

Building with Pride
Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns offers variety and top grade work. By Carol Beck-Round Whether you need a storage building, pole barn, loafing shed, metal garage, cabin or other portable building, Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns can meet your needs. In business since 1998 at the same location, the company has earned an excellent reputation. According to owner Carl Parson, “Customers drive from Bristow, Sapulpa, Tulsa and beyond to purchase their portable buildings from us.” Using only top-grade materials on everything they build, the company is located off the north side of Highway 412 at 30355 S. 4230 Rd., where you will find more than 50 displays available. Buildings can be delivered or built on location, but about 90 percent of the businesses’ work is done on location. In the company’s 17-year history, “We’ve never had a complaint about our buildings,” says Parson. “Our business has grown through word-of-mouth. We started with two buildings when we opened, and it just continues to grow each year. We’ve found that if you do everything better than the next guy, you’ll stay busy.” While they do mainly residential work, the company has expanded – again, by referrals – to include portable building projects
at public schools in Claremore, Jay, Catoosa, Inola, Locust Grove and Tulsa, as well as businesses like Arby’s, Pizza Hut and
Cherokee casinos. “We have also constructed portable buildings for the City of Tulsa,” he says. Conventional or Dutch Barn

portable buildings include treated skids along with treated floor joists on 16 inch centers, ¾ inch tongue and groove flooring, #2 stud grade materials, a 50-year factory warranty on Smart trim and on Smart panel siding, 30# felt paper and a 30-year warranty on Tamko shingles. Extras, such as steel doors, windows, four-foot loft, work bench and a four-foot treated ramp, are available at an additional charge. Sizes begin at 8x8 up to a
16x24 and larger. Pole barns, which range in size from 24x24 to 40x60, include one walk-in door and one 9x8 overhead door. An additional door is available for an extra charge. The company offers a 40-year manufacturer’s warranty on the 29-gauge metal used in the pole barns and loafing sheds, while the insulation comes with a manufacturer’s 10-year warranty. Also included in the base price is a four-inch concrete slab with rebar 18-inch on center in floor and 10-foot sidewalls. “We can build a pole barn, concrete included, within a week,” says Parson. “We can complete a portable building – built on site – in one day.” The company also builds custom carports and RV covers. Although they are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Parson will meet with potential customers at a different time to accommodate their schedules. “They just need to give us a call and we can work it out.” The company also offers rent-to-own options.

Goodbye, Yellow Teeth! White Smile Cosmetic & Family Dentistry provides three effective teeth whitening options. By Steve White, D.D.S Statistics reveal that we place a high value on our smiles. According to an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry survey, virtually all adults (99.7%) believe that one’s smile is an important social asset, and 96% of adults believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex. Three-quarters (74%) of adults feel an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chance for career success. And when respondents were asked, “What would you like to improve most about your smile?” the most common response was “whiter & brighter teeth.” If you’re not happy with your smile, teeth whitening is an excellent first step. A busy social season filled with graduations, weddings and showers is upon us, and now is the perfect time to achieve the confidence a beautiful smile brings. At White Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we offer three options for achieving sparkly, white teeth. We are also qualified to handle any issues that may arise from whitening treatments, such as tooth sensitivity, which are normally easy to manage.
Zoom Whitening is a chair-side whitening process that lightens the color of your teeth in one visit using a whitening lamp to activate the hydrogen peroxide gel placed on your teeth. Almost anyone can benefit from whitening; however, for some, it may not be as effective as it is for others. We can determine if you are a viable candidate for the procedure. For best results, tooth surfaces need to be cleaned. A checkup and cleaning are recommended if it's been a while since you've had one. For the "Zoom" whitening procedure, we strongly recommend pre-treating the teeth with a prescription strength fluoride, which we will give you, for two weeks prior to the in-office bleaching. We have found that this greatly reduces the amount of sensitivity experienced during and after the treatment. You will notice a dramatic change in the whiteness of your teeth the same day that you complete the in-office procedure. However, you will also be given a set of custom made bleaching trays with some bleaching gel to use at home for 3-5 more days. This further enhances and solidifies the initial results. The trays can be kept and used for touch-ups later on. Whitening results depend on your daily home habits. Smoking, as well as drinking coffee, tea and red wines, will re-stain your teeth quickly. However, most people report not needing to touch up whiten for at least 6 months. Visit www.whitesmilesfortulsa.com for a coupon offer. Another option is custom-fitted home whitening trays. At your first visit, we will take impressions of your teeth. From these impressions, we will make custom-fitted whitening trays. At your second visit, we will give you the whitening trays and a whitening gel kit. At your convenience at home, you will place a thin layer of whitening gel in the whitening trays and place the trays on your teeth. In order to achieve optimum whitening results, we recommend you wear these trays for 30 minutes a day for two weeks. However, if you are experiencing tooth sensitivity
The third option we offer is a whitening kit. This is a take home “do it yourself” whitening kit. It comes in prefilled, disposable whitening trays. Simply insert the comfortable trays in your mouth and wear for the recommended time. These trays are generally worn from 15 minutes to one hour per day for anywhere from 5 to 10 days. This process offers a lower concentration bleaching gel and a limited time of use, which can limit the amount of bleaching achieved. If your dentist can’t guarantee results due to various factors, there are other options such as bonding and veneering, which also give you the ability to slightly change the shape and alignment of your teeth. White Smile has had a tremendous response to our QDP (Quality Dental Plan) program, a lowcost alternative to expensive dental insurance. The plan could save you thousands on dental treatment and eliminate costly insurance premiums, which puts money back in your pocket.

Life Stressors Can Trigger Depression By Dr. Jeff McIlroy Joe’s story: I work a stressful job and balance that with family life and all activities associated with having active kids. My depression was severe – it affected my work, home and social life. My first episode of depression started in January of 2008 and was ongoing for almost a year before I started TMS Therapy. I decided on TMS Therapy because medications had too many side effects and didn’t seem to work. TMS Therapy treatment seemed promising. Once you commit to it, you see the difference fairly quickly. Once I started seeing the results, I was encouraged and felt good about the treatment. Ten treatments into the program, I felt happier, started thinking more positively – I feel like I have returned to the way I felt before I became depressed.
Christine’s story: I am a stay at home mom and wife of a firefighter. I home-school my youngest girl (12 years old). My oldest is 14 years old. My husband and I have been happily married for 16 years. My first episode of depression started directly after the birth of my second daughter. I had 2-3 episodes of depression before the birth of my second daughter, but they all resolved without meds. The depression after my second’s birth was far worse. I was at a standstill – crying all the time, erratic mood swings, couldn’t sleep, mind raced and had terrible thoughts.
After learning my insurance would cover TMS Therapy, I decided to receive treatment. I had tried so many meds, I was ready to be off of them for good. I was very skeptical in the beginning and the process hurt a little in the beginning. After I think the 5th or 6th treatment I started to notice it working. I was weaned off of my medication as I started to feel better and treatments didn’t hurt as they did in the beginning. My life has changed since receiving TMS Therapy. I don’t need meds anymore so I’m not dealing with side effects. I’m starting to lose the weight that I gained while on the meds. I have real emotions. I am me again, not some watered down version of me.
At Strength of Mind Behavioral, we are dedicated to making psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible throughout our area. By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment methods, we aim to meet a variety of patients’ needs. We were the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, noninvasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain, compelling neurons to start firing, which leads to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while lifting moods and encouraging ambition. TMS therapy has many advantages, including no medical side effects, the patient is fully awake during treatments, and results are known definitely within four to six weeks.
Our team strives to partner with you in your journey to regain your quality of life, restore your health and rediscover a life that is free from depression. TMS therapy is now covered by insurance companies including Medicare. NeuroStar has been featured on the Dr. Oz Show: www.doctoroz.com/videos/transcranialmagnetic-stimulation-cure-depression-pt-1. A thick, lush, head-turning landscape this summer begins with a phone call today to SoonerLawn. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. For the past 10 years, SoonerLawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. SoonerLawn’s six-step program begins with an application of preemergent herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns and obtain so-so results, the SoonerLawn professionals take things to the next level by treating lawns with the right formulations for that particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil pH to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases.

Your Partner for Life Holland has been doing business on Pine Street for the past 32 years. They are your Tulsa-area headquarters for tractors, outdoor power and hay equipment, and they sell and service outstanding, wellknown product lines including New Holland, Mahindra, Cub Cadet, Bush Hog and Woods. Tulsa New Holland Owner Mike McCrate said, “We were the ninth largest Cub Cadet dealer in North America last year.” Cub Cadet has more than 1,300 dealers across the country, and Tulsa New Holland has been ranked in the top 100 since 2000. When asked how he got into the “tractor business” Mike responded that he man-
aged the parts department of a Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Alva, Oklahoma while in college, and when he graduated college in 1974, he was hired as parts manager at the New Holland company store in Perryton, Texas. Mike worked for New Holland company 15 years at various locations and in various roles: parts manager, retail sales representative and retail store manager. Mike came to Tulsa in 1986 as store manager at Tulsa New Holland, and he bought the dealership from New Holland in 1989. “We’ve become somewhat of a ‘rare bear’ in the industry, in that we are still family-owned and operated and do all of our business out of one store,” said
Mike. Two of his sons are part of the operation, and other employees think of themselves as part of the Tulsa New Holland family. Some have been employed by Mike for 10 to 20 years. He is known as a “down-to-earth guy” who respects and appreciates his employees and the successful business the team has built over the years. The respect is mutual. Kelly Umphrey is general manager of the dealership and came to Tulsa from Michigan in the early 1990s when his brother, who was working for Tulsa New Holland, told him how great Oklahoma was and that he should move here. He also told Kelly that he thought Mr. McCrate could find a
place for him at the dealership. Kelly came to Tulsa without a job, and Mike did offer to employ him for six to eight weeks to do odd jobs including sweeping the shop and painting used equipment. At the end of the “trial period,” he was offered full-time employment. He has served the company as parts department manager and salesman, and was promoted to general manager a little over a year ago. Other members of the outstanding Tulsa New Holland management team include Travis McCrate, service manager; John Asmus, parts manager; and Tim McCrate, sales specialist. Tulsa New Holland has an
Spring Tune-Up for Garage Doors educated whenever you’re looking to buy products or services for your home. We get calls each year from frustrated consumers who have initially ‘saved’ a few bucks on a garage door system only to be sorry when it quickly needs service for a problem, and the individual who did the job is no longer around.” Steve suggests that you always do business with reputable companies, with employees who drive trucks with appropriate company identification and preferably wear clothing with company identification. “Always ask for proof of insurance including workers’ comp and general liability,” Steve says. “If you elect to do business with someone who sub-contracts labor and there is an accident, you could be held liable.” All Superior Overhead Door personnel are employees of Superior and are fully trained. The company is licensed, bonded and insured for the type of work they provide. When spring cleaning your garage this year, don’t overlook your garage doors
and the operating system. Superior Overhead Door recommends their 10Point Inspection at six-month intervals to check the condition of doors, springs, rollers and hinges. It also includes lubrication of all components. This is something most of us never think about, but it makes sense to ensure that the system is operating at peak efficiency throughout the year. You’ll appreciate how smoothly and quietly a garage door opens and closes when properly maintained. “A recommended lubricant improves performance and can extend the life of chain and belt systems,” adds Steve. If you ever need to replace a tired or broken garage door spring, Superior Overhead Door recommends their extended-life product that extends spring life from a usual 10,000 cycles (open and close) to 25,000 cycles. You’ll pay a little more for an extended-life spring, but the value is significant when you look at the product’s projected life expectancy. “Any and all garage door springs will eventually
PRP: Secret of the Stars continued from page 1 plasma) skin rejuvenation therapy. “The goal of our PRP treatment is to improve skin tone and texture, tighten skin, and soften lines and pores,” says Olga. “Results begin showing in three to four weeks after the initial treatment session and continue to improve with time. Generally, three treatment sessions are recommended and are spaced one to two months apart until desired results are reached.” Skin Ambitions uses PRP therapy in treating fine lines, anti-aging and wrinkles, pores and pigmentation, acne scars, superficial scars, cellulite indications, stretch marks, and deep scarring. “PRP acts to improve overall quality, tightness and texture of the skin.” For the process, a small amount of blood (similar to that drawn for a lab test) is drawn from the patient. The blood is placed into a centrifuge and spun at a very rapid rate to separate the platelets. The platelet-rich plasma is then activated to release at least eight essential growth factors and signaling proteins when applied either by injection or a Dermapen used in skin rejuvenation treatment. The injections take only a few moments and are only mildly uncomfortable. A topical anesthesia is applied for the process. “The procedure itself only takes about 15 minutes,” says Olga. Because all constitutes retrieved in PRP are exclusively from the
patient, there is virtually no risk of intolerance, infection or rejection. Total time including drawing blood, separating the platelet-rich plasma, patient preparation and treatment takes about an hour. The procedure is quick, relatively painless, and requires no post procedure care or time off from daily events. If the patient has mild swelling, redness, or bruising, they fade within one to three days. PRP treatment is administered to promote local tissue growth and repair of damaged tissue. It is natural and non-toxic with no adverse or allergic reaction. PRP treatment is convenient and provides targeted and accelerated healing with a short recovery time, rapid results and long-term benefits. Call Skin Ambitions today to set up a free consultation and assessment to find out if PRP is right for you.

You CAN Help Children A glamorous evening filled with fun and entertainment will benefit the Child Abuse Network at the CANdlelight Ball on April 25.
By Deanna Rebro An evening of glamour, fun and entertainment on April 25 will benefit a cause that has alarming, widespread and increasing statistics throughout the community. The Child Abuse Network (CAN) presents the 2015 CANdlelight Ball at the historic Mayo Hotel as a way to raise awareness and funds for children who are sexually, physically or emotionally abused. CAN, a charter member of the National Children’s Alliance, is the only nonprofit organization focused on child abuse investigation. At its Children’s Advocacy Center in Tulsa, children from newborn to 17 are provided with medical evaluations, forensic interviews, mental health services and case reviews. The entire atmosphere fosters a feeling of safety and comfort for the children and their families. Services are available upon referral 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Last year, CAN served over 2,500 children. They are currently averaging 10 children per day. A conservative estimate indicates one child in every classroom in every school in Tulsa is affected by some

form of child abuse. There is no socioeconomic boundary; child abuse is literally everywhere in the Tulsa community. The organization’s Tulsa model, Children’s Advocacy Center, stands out as the only branch in the state to house the entire team of multidisciplinary agencies to investigate child abuse and provide services under one roof. The 9,600-square-foot building houses offices for the Tulsa County District Attorney, the Tulsa Police Department, Tulsa County Department of Human Services – Child Welfare, OU-Tulsa School of Community Medicine, Pediatrics Medicine and others. Keeping all involved agencies together facilitates communication and expediency to help children at this critical point in their lives. Board President Adrienne Barnett serves on this year’s event committee that is led by Amanda McConnell. Adrienne knows first-hand why centralization is important. In 2008, the family law attorney was trying a case in Arkansas that involved abuse of a young teenage girl. Offices were
scattered. No one knew what the other participating agencies were doing. The child was lost in the system. During that time, Adrienne met Dr. Robert Block, a leading authority on child abuse pediatrics. Two years later, CAN asked her to join the efforts in the Tulsa office, where Dr. Block was practicing. “I am happy to be a part of this cause,” she says, “to help raise funds for these kids and to educate the community on how to stop child abuse.” The theme for this fourth annual black tie event is “Every child is a gem.” The sparkle of precious jewels and a candlelight ambience will be the setting for the gala that features a cocktail hour, red carpet photo opportunities, dinner in the Crystal Ballroom, a live auction, live Fund-a-Need and surprise entertainment. Auction items include sports and entertainment packages, fine dining and jewelry. An after-party begins at 9 p.m. with champagne, desserts and slow, rock and swing dancing to the music of Dave and the Wavetones, a nationally recognized 16-piece band that has performed for governors, senators and celebrities throughout the Southwest. “This entire venue allows us to increase awareness of child abuse in our community, tell people what we are doing to end the violence, and honor the sponsors who make our work and our services possible,” says Adrienne. Sponsorship levels range from $1,000 to $15,000. Major sponsors thus far include the H.A. and Mary K. Chapman Charitable

FFriendship Day Register by April 15 for the event on May 4 to learn more about participating in Oklahoma Home & Community Education.
By Jim Butcher Attention, women of Tulsa County! What are you doing for the rest of your life? Do you want to learn new skills? Make lifelong friends? How about lending a hand to help others? Oklahoma Home & Community Education (OHCE) is seeking new blood, and in return will provide you with opportunities in these areas. Before making a commitment to change your life for the better, perhaps you need more information and an introduction to the county group, which is located in all 77 counties. This introduction can be found at “Friendship Day” set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, May 4 at the OSU Extension Center, 4116 E. 15th St., on the north side of the Tulsa State Fair Grounds. According to Kathy Erwin, chair of the membership committee, Friendship Day provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the organization at the OHCE Week Celebration. “Following lunch, you and your friends will have the opportunity to learn more about OHCE at our Committee Fair,” she explained. Basket weaving instructor Yvonne Dulaney will instruct the group on making a woven May Day basket. Cost for the day

Longtime member Mary Ellen Kingdom explained that the organization is about building better communities by working together through leadership and service. “Another key component is providing continuing education from the OSU Extension Service on matters affecting the individual, home, family and community,” she said. “It’s been proven that by working together, we can achieve more.” The Oklahoma Home & Community Education organization was formally created in 1935, but organizations known as “farm women’s clubs” existed as early as 1910 in Oklahoma. Gradually acquiring the name “home demonstration clubs,” these groups flourished and multiplied in the state after Congress passed the SmithLever Act on May 8, 1914. Their mission was to distribute educational information on agriculture and home economics to individuals who did not attend college. In 1914, Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State

VViva La Spring Tulsa Garden Club presents its 65th annual Garden Tour Saturday, April 25. By Christine Detrick Eager for the sight of budding flowers and lovely gardens? Tulsa Garden Club warmly invites you to its 65th annual Garden Tour, Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring four wonderful mid-town Tulsa residential gardens that will spotlight a wide selection of annuals, perennials, succulents and water features – creatively planned and displayed, and adaptable for home gardens of any size and budget – from containers to impressive beds of blooming colors! This year’s tour incorporates visits to the home gardens located at 2932 Woodward Blvd., 1818 E. 43rd St., 3030 S. Yorktown, and 2618 E. 40th St. Tickets to the event are $10 each and can be purchased starting April 10 through April 24 at the Tulsa Garden Center, located at 2435 S. Peoria, or at any of the four homes on the tour Saturday, April 25.
Honorary Chair of this year’s tour is well-known local landscape designer Breniss O’Neal, and current president of Tulsa Garden Club is Judith Carter. Tickets for the special “Patrons’ Party” on Friday evening, April 24 are also available, starting at just $65 per person, and include not only the evening party but also a private tour of the host gardens for patrons on Saturday morning. Since 1929, the Tulsa Garden Club has developed from a garden study club to an active civic organization with objectives to study and advance the art of gardening, horticulture, floral design, landscape design and environmental sciences. Many members have served in leadership roles in the community and throughout National Garden Clubs, Inc., and several have also become Master Gardeners or Linnaeus Gardeners,

Others are qualified as judges for regional and national flower shows, or are instructors for various classes and programs at the Tulsa Garden Center for members and the public. Tulsa Garden Club membership is open to all interested in sharing these objectives. As a voluntary, educational organization, the club’s other contributions to the greater Tulsa community include: annual funding of the Tulsa Garden Center, Inc.; furnishing rose plants to the Tulsa Municipal Rose Garden;
helping organize other garden clubs throughout the Tulsa area; working with elementary schools in youth gardening projects; supporting poster contests in Tulsa schools; staging standard flower shows that are free and open to the public (the next of which is May 9-10 at the Tulsa Garden Center); awarding annual scholarships to landscape architecture and horticulture students at Oklahoma State University and Tulsa Community College; supporting an Up With Trees plot; fostering ongoing conservation and road-
side beautification projects; and presenting its major fundraising event, the annual Garden Tour.
