ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
For Advertising Information, call
Yours, Mine, and Ours. BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT June has historically been the most popular wedding month of the year. Whether you’re just now getting hitched or you have been for a long time, to combine your finances or have separate accounts is a sticky ball of wax with which lots of couples struggle. In fact, it was one of the top causes of marital problems that I dealt with as a therapist many years ago. Now just for the record, my husband and I have been together for nearly 30 years. We got married while in college and were broke. We have always had shared/combined accounts. All income and all debt has been shared by both of us equally regardless of who was making more money throughout the years. This has worked well for us and I can’t imagine doing it any different. However, it does require a lot of work. As with many other areas of relationships, it requires good communication. It requires talking about shared financial goals, setting limits on expenses, and trusting each other. It means being accountable to each other, following through on commitments and being willing to share. It doesn’t come without a few bumps in the road and an argument here or there. When couples are willing to talk about the hard stuff and work through to successful conclusions, it strengthens the relationship. When they have difficulty fighting fair, being honest, and sharing, it can be
www.ValueNews.com
very hard. So it is…with the subject of money and all other aspects of a relationship. Now over the years, I have noticed an interesting trend. More and more young, first-time couples and older second marriage couples are choosing to have separate accounts. Sometimes, they tell me they have a joint account that they pay household bills out of and then individual accounts for their “play” money. The joint account is funded by each person with an agreed upon amount each month. This account is used to pay the mortgage, utilities, insurances, etc. that the couple share. However, the individual accounts are often used to pay for food, entertainment, gifts and miscellaneous purchases. There is always more than one way to “skin a cat” as my mom used to say. (That’s a funny saying isn’t it? Who the heck ever skins cats?) Anyway, couples that use this strat-
egy often report that they do it this way so that they don’t have to fight about money. They also tell me that they feel safer this way should something happen to their relationship. They don’t have to “ask” their partner about things they want to buy with their own money. Basically, what they are telling me is that they don’t want to take the risk of dealing with this difficult topic in their relationship. They are worried about not being able to communicate and effectively resolve conflict they might have in this area. It is an attempt to eliminate an area that might become problematic. I must say that I understand and respect the notion of trying to head off problems before they arise. However, I must submit that I’m not sure that avoiding something that is this intertwined in our daily lives is possible in an intimate relationship. My experience in working with couples has been that it just trades one set of emotions, and problems, and issues to deal with for another set. At the end of the day, it’s about learning (no matter how difficult) to communicate and share and trust in all areas of our relationships, including money. Brush Up on Dental Health for Kids The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a dental checkup at least twice a year for most children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Kids and parents – it’s important to visit your dentist By Steve White, D.D.S According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children in the United States. A whopping 40 percent of children have decay by the time they reach kindergarten! As a parent, establishing good dental habits in your children today will ensure that they have fewer problems in the future – throughout every stage of development and well into adulthood. The sooner children begin getting regular dental checkups, the healthier their mouths will stay throughout their lives. Early checkups help prevent cavities and tooth decay, which can lead to pain, trouble concentrating and other medical issues. Kids with healthy teeth chew food easily, speak more clearly and smile with confidence.
recommends a dental checkup at least twice a year for most children. Some children need more frequent dental visits because of increased risk of tooth decay, unusual growth patterns or poor oral hygiene. Why are twice-a-year visits important? Regular dental visits help your child stay cavity-free and are important for preventive health care. Teeth cleanings remove the debris that builds up on the teeth, irritate the gums and cause decay. Fluoride treatments renew the fluoride content in the enamel, strengthening teeth and preventing cavities. At White Smile Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we accept patients 3 and older. During the exam, we will discuss your child’s diet and oral hygiene habits, and I will demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. After gently examining your child’s teeth, oral tissues and jaws, the teeth will be cleaned and polished. A dental exam for children might include application of various protective measures — such as sealants or fluoride treatments — to reduce the risk of decay. It might also include dental X-rays or other diagnostic procedures. Parents can encourage their children to enjoy good dental health with regular dental exams and these tips: • Beware of frequent snacking • Brush effectively twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste • Floss once a day • Have sealants applied when appropriate • Assure proper fluoride through drinking water, fluoride products or fluoride supplements
regularly your whole life. Dentists can detect small problems before they become bigger, more painful problems. Your child could have oral health problems you don’t know about like cavities or developmental issues with teeth not coming in or forming correctly. And getting your child's teeth cleaned regularly is a great opportunity for them to learn the best way to take care of their teeth.

NNot Your Average Neighborhood Bottle Shop Aspen Liquor has the largest selection in Broken Arrow and emphasizes friendly service. By Christopher Davis For those who live in Broken Arrow and enjoy the occasional alcoholic beverage, the name Aspen Liquor is likely to evoke a smile. Conveniently located on the corner of 91st and Aspen, the legendary liquor store is just minutes from Highway 169 and the BA Expressway. Even
customers who do not live nearby will benefit from adopting Aspen Liquor as their neighborhood bottle shop, where customers are considered family. Before store manager Paula McCarver joined the team at Aspen Liquor five years ago, she was a regular customer. A longtime owner of a landscaping company, McCarver had suffered an injury
that forced her to reevaluate her business altogether. About that time, the current manager was looking to retire and knew Paula was considering her options. So, she approached Paula about taking her spot at Aspen Liquor. “The timing was perfect,” she recalls, and the transition was easy for everyone. A lot of businesses like to say their customers are like family, but at Aspen Liquor the claim holds up. It seems like the only thing that distinguishes customers from staff is the side of the counter they are standing. Yet, more often than not, employees are only behind the counter to ring up a sale. “You’re never going to see
Paula and Morris McCarver, managers, Aspen Liquor.
someone just sitting behind the counter, reading,” quips Morris McCarver, who manages the beer inventory at Aspen Liquor. Rather, employees are engaging customers: answering questions, suggesting a new arrival or simply helping locate a favorite. After all, Aspen Liquor does have the largest selection of beer and wine in Broken Arrow. It is common for employees and customers to greet one another by name and carry on conversations about the various offerings. Each employee is knowledgeable about the products in stock, though some have special expertise. For example, Paula McCarver is passionate about wine. “Especially a dry red,” she notes. Despite her personal tastes, she keeps up with the ever-growing inventory, which includes a lot of imports, as well as vintages from California, Oregon, Washington and Oklahoma. Her husband, Morris McCarver, joined the team several years ago and oversees the beer selection. “We have a lot of Oklahoma brews,” he says. They also focus on bringing in limited and new releases from favorite breweries like Marshall’s and Sierra Nevada. In addition to the broad selection of beer and wine, Aspen Liquor carries all the requisite brands of the harder stuff. From vodka to whiskey to tequila, there’s no doubt customers will find what they are looking for.
What could be better than a huge selection at great prices? Well, discounts on cases are always a bonus. Cases of beer and large bottles of wine are eligible for a 10% discount, while cases of 750 mL wine bottles fetch customers 15% off. Even better, Aspen Liquor has a customer rewards program. Each month, they hold a drawing for $100 gift certificate to use in the store. Now that’s a reward! Truly, Aspen Liquor treats their customers like family. With an expansive selection, great prices and monthly drawings for a party’s worth of store credit, it’s no wonder their customers are so loyal. After more than three decades in business, the store just gets better (not unlike a fine wine). For those looking for a shopping experience that boasts the best in selection and friendly service, head over to the corner of 91st and Aspen. No one leaves disappointed.

Relive History at KKids Frontier Days Kid Camp Hands-on activities and hiking are highlights of this day camp held at Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch. By Pat Reeder Kids can experience life in the 1880s, when Will Rogers was growing up on an Indian Territory family ranch, this summer. Frontier Days Kid Camp at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch will take youngsters back to the days before statehood and to Nov. 4, 1879 when Will was born.
Today, it is a 400-acre living history ranch with a portion of the land owned by the State of Oklahoma and the balance leased from the Army Corps of Engineers. The home was moved from its original site in 1963 when the Corps of Engineers began filling Oologah Lake.
Living conditions are a far cry from the days of Will’s youth, when his mother had no electricity, and no running water. Hands-on activities from gardening to rope making will be a part of the many events planned during the July 13-15 day camp at the ranch, where Longhorn cattle
Dexter Bolin, Will Rogers Memorial Museums Roper (docent) will share frontier days experiences with children during Frontier Days Kid Camp at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch. Participants will have a chance for a hayride to see cattle grazing along the banks of Oologah Lake.
roam on grassy hills and banks of Oologah Lake, and chickens and goats scatter — and there is the occasional cry of the ranch peacock. There will be fun learning experiences about life on the frontier, making memories and learning about Oklahoma history. Age-interest level is middle school and younger, but parents and older students will find it entertaining as well as educational. Activities planned include blacksmith demonstrations, fence building and whitewashing, 1880s period games, nature hikes, cane pole fishing, leather working, gardening, rope making, saddle and tack maintenance and hayrides. Campers will check in each morning at 8:30 and hike to the various assigned project stations throughout the ranch grounds (appropriate walking shoes a must). Snacks will be provided during the morning. Participants will receive a rope, cowboy hat and bandana at the close of the camp. Tuesday Study Club, a Claremore women’s group, is a contributing sponsor. Lunch will be available for purchase on the grounds when camp closes at 12:30 p.m. Camp cost is $20 each for families who are members of Friends of Will Rogers or $30 for non-members. Registration deadline is June 29. See online enrollment form at willrogers.com/ frontier for enrollment details. Before his death on Aug. 15, 1935 in an Alaska plane crash, Will Rogers was a widely traveled vaudeville and movie star, a
renowned trick roper, newspaper columnist and radio personality. After his death, his wife deeded a portion of the ranch to the state of Oklahoma for a state park. The Birthplace Ranch, on the banks of Oologah Lake, is at 9501 E. 380 Road, the site of the house where Will Rogers was born, an era correct barn built in 1993 by Amish builders, and a 2,000-foot grass airstrip. It is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is by donation. In addition to availability for tours of the house and barn, it is a prominent site for weddings, family gatherings and for educational opportunities. Improvements underway include expanding RV hookups from eight to 12, fully equipped for electric, water and sewer. Electric output is 30/50/120 amps. Comfort stations with new toilets and sinks have been remodeled. For RV reservations, call 918-361-9964.

AA Rock Show for the Ages
Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society holds annual Gem and Mineral Show at Tulsa County Fairgrounds Central Park Hall, July 11-12. By Christopher Davis Join the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society for their annual Gem and Mineral Show at the Tulsa County Fairgrounds on July 11 and 12. The show serves as the organization’s largest fundraiser, supporting educational and enrichment programs for the community. The weekend-long exhibit provides an opportunity to experience the beauty and history of our planet. It also brings together vendors from across the region, offering choice specimens of gems and precious stones, jewelry, and related crafts and artifacts. “The show is a great way for rock hounds and newcomers to meet and share their passion for gems and minerals,” explains Julia Allande, show chair for 2015. She and her husband, Paulino Allande, are avid collectors of geodes, crystals and rare gems. When asked how they first developed a love of rock hounding, Julia describes helping family sort through heirlooms in storage. She recalls, “There was a rock collection amongst the things
headed to storage. We found ourselves setting aside some of our favorites. Next thing we knew, we had a nice little collection started.” But, as they started going on hiking trips and searching for their own finds, it wasn’t long before their collection outgrew their shelves. “We came across a store that had a going out of business sale,” she laughs. “They were selling some display cases, and we got a great deal on them.” Now, the Allandes have their own personal showcase for their finds. With the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society, they help plan field trips and facilitate workshops for kids, which combine education with fun. Each month, the Rock and Mineral Society meets at College Hill Presbyterian Church, located near the University of Tulsa at 712 S. Columbia Ave. Meetings begin 6:15 p.m. on the second Monday of every month. Visitors and children are welcome. Prior to the general meeting, a social hour is held, along with “Pebble Pups,” which is an opportunity for kids to have some fun with rocks. “Kids love collecting crystals
and gems, and enjoy learning about how they were formed,” says Julia. Rock hounding can be a rewarding hobby. Participating in field trips is a great way for parents and children to get outside and enjoy nature together. At the same time, returning home with a few specimens is a bonus reward, providing a vehicle to create memories and share stories. Every piece is different and has its own story. Whether the rock was found along a trail or digging into the side of a mountain, it always feels special when one makes a discovery. Even when the rock is purchased, or passed on from person to person, there’s always an element of thrill when you lay eyes on the piece for the first time. In the Rock and Mineral Society’s case at College Hill Church, some representative samples and rarities are on display. Several types of quartz are shown, including “Smokey” and “Skeletal” varieties. Though each type is similar in basic molecular composition, the differences in temperature and pressure at the time of formation affect their color and grain pattern. One of the highlights of the display, a semi-precious stone known as lapis lazuli, has its origins in Afghanistan. Long ago, blue was a very rare color, and lapis was coveted for its deep azure hue. It is referenced in ancient literature, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, and is often associated with royalty. It is worth attending a second Monday meeting just for the chance to view the specimen in person.

R Reverse Mortgage an Option for Seniors By Joshua Danker-Dake If you are a homeowner 62 years of age or older, a reverse mortgage could be a great way for you to improve your cash flow and achieve greater financial stability as well as a more comfortable retirement. Bill Simms is a reverse mortgage specialist. “One of the goals people have is to be able to maintain a comfortable lifestyle,” he says. “And one of the biggest fears seniors have is that they will outlive their money. A reverse mortgage can be a tremendous help for them.” A reverse mortgage is available to anyone 62 years or older who is a homeowner and has equity in his or her home. “This is a HUD program,” says Simms, “and it’s FHA insured. This creates a safety factor for seniors.” A reverse mortgage can potentially solve a number of cash flow problems. “For seniors who need money or income, a reverse mortgage can be a good solution,” says Simms. “You can take the money as a lump sum or in monthly installments, establish a line of credit, or any combination of the three. The money received is nontaxable – it comes from the
principle of your home. When you get a reverse mortgage, there are no restrictions on how you use the money. And some tremendously good news is that recently, HUD is allowing the use of reverse mortgage funds to buy a home.” When homeowners take out reverse mortgages, they borrow a portion of the equity from their homes. “One tremendous advantage of this is that you don’t have to make any payments to the lender. However, the homeowners are still responsible for the payment of property taxes and homeowners' insurance," says Simms. There’s a misconception that when you take out a reverse mortgage, you lose the title of your house, but that’s not true at all. The house always stays in the homeowner’s name.” Simms is a certified senior advisor and has almost two decades of experience in this and related fields. “I’ve been helping seniors with their financial needs for 18 years,” says Simms. “I have experience with insurance and protection programs, and I’ve worked to resolve the needs of seniors. In the last few years, I’ve

And you can use the money from a reverse mortgage to pay off a loan or lien. “This is a good way to improve your cash flow by eliminating those monthly payments,” says Simms. “A reverse mortgage can be a useful tool for people who don’t want to take Social Security too early. It can also be an attractive option and a big help for people with dwindling 401(k)s.” If you think a reverse mortgage might be right for you or your parents, or if you want more information about reverse mortgages, call Bill Simms at (918) 852-5784.

TTime to Celebrate The Clock Store celebrates one year in business this month. From quartz to cuckoo, these clockmakers restore memories and keep traditions alive.
By Christopher Davis When Jonathan Schultz mentions he owns The Clock Store, he says the response is usually, “Hey – I got a clock.” The discussion then turns to the story behind the clock, which is just fine with Schultz. The story associated with each clock he meets is part of his passion for repairing them. “I love hearing about where a clock came from, learning who made it,” says Schultz, who has loved clocks ever since he was a young boy. In August, The Clock Store will celebrate its first anniversary of business. Located in Broken Arrow’s Rose District at Yesterday’s Antique Mall, the shop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. The Clock Store also has a second location in Bixby at Birdseye Treasure (at 151st and Memorial). Both locations sell restored clocks and provide full services for a wide range of clocks. “We don’t just repair clocks,” explains Schultz, “We restore memories.” And when one
steps back to think about the significance attached to a clock, it’s true. Most clocks are passed on from generation to generation, watching over family traditions and marking the minutes as little ones grow up. When an antique clock is adopted by a new family, part of the allure is the history it represents. While clocks are utilitarian in nature, there is something special about a wellmade clock. The design of the wood, the craftsmanship and the gears inside – clocks are works of art as much as timekeepers. Before televisions, and now computers, took over our living rooms, clocks served as a focal point in homes. Schultz says that between 1840 and 1950, millions of clocks were produced. Without dwelling too much on how ‘they just don’t make them like they used to,’ it is worth pointing out how clocks worthy of our love and attention are becoming rare. This is another reason Schultz is so passionate about clocks. He

points out, “Although it keeps time, no one wants to inherit their grandfather’s cell phone.” Though Schultz, an admitted “people person,” is the face of The Clock Store, he works with three other clockmakers. Each has their own specialty. Schultz has a knack for quartz clocks, and has even retrofitted winding clocks with quartz assemblies for owners who have difficulty moving the components. He adds that the winding assembly can be held onto and later reinstalled when the time comes to pass it on. One of his partners specializes in anniversary clocks (which require winding about once per year). Another’s focus is grandfather (also known as tall case) clocks. And another clockmaker loves restoring and repairing cuckoo clocks. A lot goes into proper repair of clocks. It starts with an assessment of the nature of repair and quoting a cost estimate for the owner. Once Schultz has the approval to move forward, they execute the repairs, which may require ordering special parts or fabricating a replacement. Once the repair is complete, the clock moves into the regulation phase. This entails observation and making sure the clock actually keeps proper time, and might require more adjustments. After it has been verified the clock works properly, it is ready for pick up or delivery. While most clock repair shops might take anywhere from three to six months for service completion, The Clock Shop generally has a six to eight

TThe Price of Depression… The clock is ticking. Don’t lessen your odds of recovery.
By Duane Blankenship Dr. Jeff McIlroy has served Strength of Mind as Chief of Psychiatry since its founding in 2004. The group’s purpose is to provide a ready response to those in need of outpatient behavioral health care and their goal is to make psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible. “By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment
methods,” says Dr. McIlroy, “Strength of Mind meets a variety of patients’ needs at any age.” Strength of Mind was the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic
pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain compelling neurons to start firing which leads to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while elevating moods and encouraging ambition. Insurance companies that currently cover TMS treatment at Strength of Mind include Blue Cross Blue Shield, Federal, Anthem, BCBS-OK, Medicare, United Behavioral Health, Community Care Oklahoma and Value Options. “The price of depression is staggering,” says Dr. McIlroy. “It affects your family, friends, employer, employees and, of course, you. Depression leads to decreased mood, initiative and drive. It brings about indecisiveness about life while healthy development, jobs, hobbies and relationships come to a halt. The result is dissatisfaction with life in general, decreased physical activity, leading to poor internal health and stamina. Thus fat content goes up, efficiency of heart beats go down. The risk of strokes and diabetes rises.” With depression, the clock is ticking. “Research shows that parts of the brain, such as where
memories are stored, actually shrink.” says Dr. McIlroy. “The likelihood of recovery continues to decrease the longer a depressed individual waits to see a specialist.” In other words, the longer you remain depressed, the harder it is to come out of it. The good news is that there is help through TMS. Dr. McIlroy explained that Strength of Mind has much to offer through a three-pronged approach to treating depression with TMS. “(1) We wake up the brain with direct stimulation in areas that pills have not been able to touch. (2) We use therapeutic fitness to engage the body while the brain is in a state of readiness. (3) We change patient behavior. This is what makes our treatment so unique; we treat the whole person.”
Research has shown Dr. McIlroy’s group that while physical activity is a powerful tool in treating depression, exercise is the last thing a depressed person wants to do. “This typically leads to listlessness, inactivity and remaining out of shape,” said Dr. McIlroy. “Strength of Mind’s solution is one-on-one therapeutic fitness to get the body moving, the result of which is a boost to the recovery process. And there have been no medical side effects with our TMS treatment,” added Dr. McIlroy. The Strength of Mind team forms a partnership with each patient in the journey to regaining quality of life. Their goal is to restore health and help each patient rediscover a life free from depression.
Dr. Jeff McIlroy, Chief of Psychiatry for Strength of Mind, says their TMS treatment is a three-pronged approach to treating and recovering from depression.

is vital as the season heats up. Summer is hardly in full swing, and already Oklahomans have been tested with spikes in temperature. After a rainy, recordsetting May, June swept through and pummeled the region with more humidity and heat. “The previous two summers were relatively mild,” says Debi Raper, adding that she expects this summer to be one of the hotter ones. “It’s going to be humid, on top of the heat,” she says, which only exacerbates reliance on air conditioning. She explains when the weather heats up quickly, they receive a lot of emergency calls for failing cooling units. And, while the family welcomes the business, people
Can Count On Aire Serv of Tulsa provides a family tradition of reliable, honest service.
By Christopher Davis This summer is going to be a doozy. Before the searing heat pushes your AC unit to the brink, it is worth having Aire Serv Heating & Air Conditioning pay a visit to conduct some preventative maintenance to ensure your comfort throughout the season. Aire Serv is based in Bixby, and serves the entire Tulsa metro area. Owned by Randy Raper, who has lived in the Tulsa area his entire life, the company is truly a family business. His wife, Debi, runs the office, scheduling service visits and handling nonstop phone calls. Their son, Jordan, is also a certified technician and possesses skills and experience much deeper than his age implies. When asked about the family business, Jordan says he grew up watching his grandfather and father repair heating and cooling units. “I used to ride along with my dad,” he says. Once he was old enough to lend a hand, he did. Throughout high school, he was learning the trade – whenever he wasn’t studying or playing sports. “If I wasn’t at any outside school activity, I was helping my
broken arrow
dad,” he recalls. While other twenty-somethings are still trying to figure out what they want to be when they grow up, Jordan is already well established in a career. Such reliability and work ethic is representative of the Raper family and their business. Knowing a reputable company to fix air conditioning
could avoid the misery that comes with a broken air conditioner. “A lot of problems come from not maintaining units,” she says. If units aren’t properly cleaned and tested at least twice per year, small problems turn into big problems. Often, preventable breakdowns occur because no one was checking the unit in the first place. Debi and Randy urge customers to sign on for the Aire Serv Advantage Plan. The Advantage Plan protects customers with cooling and heating service checks twice per year, ensuring HVAC systems are prepared for the extreme temperatures of summer and winter. Each service visit features a 26-point inspection and tune up, including filter replacement
Page 21
and unit wash. In addition to the preventative care invested in the cooling system, Aire Serv offers Advantage Plan customers a 15% discount on repairs. So, even if something does fail, owners will have something cool to look forward to. All Aire Serv work is backed by a 100% guarantee, adding to the peace of mind offered to customers. Plus, Aire Serv is available for repairs 24 hours per day, seven days per week – with no overtime charges. Sometimes, though, units aren’t worth the effort and cost of repairs. For those wanting the increased efficiency of a new system, Aire Serv can assist with financing. Further, when a new high efficiency unit is purchased, owners are eligible for a rebate with PSO. With service plans to cover customers year round, deals on emergency service and 24/7 service, Aire Serv is the business to call on to keep you cool this summer. Don’t wait until your unit goes out – set up a service call today.

By Elizabeth Nash The phrase “Inspiring Gardeners to Create” has guided Sue Goetz’s life as a garden designer, writer and speaker. Based in Washington State, Sue is a certified professional horticulturist (CPH). She shares, “…a creative gardener…celebrates the garden for all of its uses.” Her personal passion is all about what the garden gives back. She encourages people to make discoveries in their own gardens. And that passion has awarded her gold medals at numerous flower and garden shows. Her home garden has been featured in “Northwest Home and Garden” magazine as well as “Country Gardens” magazine. And she has been highlighted in both “Sunset” and “Fine Gardening” magazines. Tulsa Herb Society is hosting Sue Goetz on Monday, July 13 at 7 p.m. as their annual
educational speaker. Sue will speak about her latest book, “The Herb Lover’s Spa Book” (published in February 2015). She will be sharing her passion for gardening and particularly her love of herbs. “I am an herb lover, but I am also a spa lover. When you put the two together, you have the start of a journey of delight.” Her book proposes: “It is all about relaxation in your own surroundings and using herbs from your garden to create a pleasurable, deeply beneficial experience.” One of the most beloved herbs – lavender – has shown in research studies that inhaling its essence actually forces a physical response which lowers blood pressure, heart rate and skin temperature. Sue will share her favorite herbs to plant in your garden and their healing properties. And her book shares 40-plus

The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), a DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card, which includes active duty U.S. military Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, as well as members of the National Guard and Reserve, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps - and up to five family members. “Parents of young children tell us that they go together to museums to learn new things and have family time together,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “Blue Star Museums helps them do both, by helping military families learn about the cultural resources in their communities, and offering a
fun, high-quality experience that’s budget friendly as well as family friendly. We’re proud to help connect museums to military communities nationwide.” “Blue Star Museums has grown into a nationally recognized program that service members and their families look forward to each year,” said Blue Star Families Chief Executive Officer Kathy Roth-Douquet. “It helps bring our local military and civilian communities together, and offers families fun and enriching activities in their home towns. We are thrilled with the continued growth of the program and the unparalleled opportunities it offers.” This year, more than 2,000 (and counting) museums in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa are taking part in the initiative. “We are grateful for the members of our military and their families that
continued from page 1 support them. Being a Blue Star Member is just one small way that we can show our appreciation for everything that they do,” Lori Lewis, Executive Director of the Broken Arrow History Museum. Any and all qualifying families are invited to stop in to see the Broken Arrow History Museum located at 400 South Main in downtown Broken Arrow, in the heart of the Rose District. The hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Broken Arrow History Museum houses a permanent collection of artifacts and displays that tell the tale of the history of Broken Arrow, from the arrival of the Creek Indians at the end of the Trail of Tears to some of the more modern developments in our town including
some of our prominent early citizens. The museum houses exhibits of the Childers log cabin, the train depot, “Broken Aro” coal and our two banks that were established prior to statehood. The first floor exhibit hall houses temporary exhibits that are changed throughout the year. In midJuly, an exhibit from the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame will open. For more information, contact

Summer Essentials for Your Trees and Plants
continued from page 1
Specialists has the finest employees and provides the highest quality services in their field of expertise. “All company employees are subjected to random drug screening,” Leilani adds, “and our employees have nearly 65 years of collective experience in the tree and lawn care industry.” A certified and trained arborist and tree care safety professional is always available to answer questions you might have about your trees, plants or yard. Estimates are always free with no obligation. “Now is a great time to get trees checked to make sure they’re in good health for another Oklahoma summer,” said Dale. “And after all the recent rains we’ve experienced,” added Bryan, “your soil is going to dry out and crack faster than normal. You’ll need to keep the soil moist to about an inch below the ground’s surface to be safe.” When you contact S&W for information or to employ their services, be sure to ask about their Tree Shield program. “Customers are our top priority,” said Leilani. With Oklahoma’s unpredictable weather patterns, S&W offers Tree Shield for a fixed monthly rate. The package is great for large properties like apartment complexes, industrial and commercial lots and homeowners who own large properties. The Tree Shield program enables participants
to “lock in” to ensure that they receive a bargain rate plus priority service when storms hit. They will be on S&W’s Priority List that ensures expedited service after a storm or emergency. Call the office for complete details or ask about Tree Shield when you meet with a company representative to receive your free estimate for provided services. “S&W Tree Specialists is fully insured and fully covered, including workers compensation. And customers are covered as well,” said Leilani. “All employees are screened prior to hiring and all are direct employees of S&W. We don’t contract our labor.” Don’t be held liable for an accident that could occur on the job at your home or business. Check out S&W Tree Specialists with the Better Business Bureau and then give them a call for your tree, turf and lawn issues.

TTaste the Delights The Pink House is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday. By Lorrie Ward Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.” The fact that Pink House owner Margo Stewart has taste is obvious to anyone who has a meal at the restaurant. And she can truly be called an artist, as she and her staff create a beautiful and hospitable atmosphere for their guests every day. The restaurant itself is housed in a lovely old home, a historic Claremore landmark, and as with anything truly beautiful, it radiates its light from the inside out. Margo and her staff are full of joy and warmth that overflow and infuse the room, making guests feel as if they have truly arrived home. The dining room at The Pink House is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and guests are offered an eclectic selection from an extensive menu. Choices include light and delicious salads, scrumptious sandwiches and wraps, and warm
and tasty soups of the day. The Pink House is famous for their selection of quiches, each served with green salad, fresh fruit and fruit dip, and a delectable piece
of banana bread. Or you may want to try one of their signature casseroles, like the chicken enchilada or the chicken and broccoli, both of which give new meaning to the word “comfort food.” Desserts become their own works of art at The Pink House and include daily offers of chocolate and butterscotch layer desserts, coconut cream pie, and baked fudge. Special desserts also make guest appearances at The Pink House from time to time, like mandarin orange cake, bread pudding, and Italian crème cake. “Even though these are not always on the menu, we can make them on request,” says Margo. “If you will give us 24-hour
notice, we will be sure to have that prepared for your visit. We are always happy to make your favorite!” During a typical lunch hour, the restaurant is filled with chatting groups at cozy black cloth covered tables, happily nibbling at a wonderful array of colorful and tasty foods from the menu. But the Pink House stretches its hospitality beyond the lunch hour, offering a wide variety of catering services for parties and events. The restaurant delivers madeto-order “lunch boxes” to local businesses, and hosts wedding and baby showers, birthday parties and receptions. Menu items are available for these events, as well

as other party-perfect selections like finger sandwiches and pinwheels. “My favorite pinwheels are the jalapeno and cranberry,” says Margo. “They are yummy!” Just as they are well known for their selection of many flavored teas, both hot and cold, they are renowned for hosting “teas,” or tea parties for special guests. In the spirit of the “tea,” The Pink House offers a nice selection of teas, teapots, and other tea related items in their gift shop. A list of parties, events, “teas,” and other catering opportunities are available in detail on their website at www.pinkhouseofclaremore.com. Whether she is hosting a lunch hour meal with friends or a tea party, shower or special event, Margo’s promise to her guests is to provide them with “a totally unique and relaxing dining experience, and the absolute perfect setting for creating memories that will last a lifetime.” And by doing just that, she proves herself to be a true artist, touching lives within her canvas, The Pink House of Claremore.
