Spring Cleaning! Great Ways to Keep Your Home Safe and Smelling Great

W

inter has finally faded away and spring colors are in bloom. While it might look restorative outside your home, your chimney and dryer vents may still be dealing with a gloomy, cold weather hangover. A good spring cleaning is an opportunity to refresh your home and enable you to enjoy all the benefits of Oklahoma’s seasonal change. Here are a few reasons why spring cleaning is important: • Breathing – Seems like a simple issue considering it’s a necessity of life. But when your home is lingering of creosote and ash the air becomes stagnant, and your respiratory health suffers. A solid spring chimney cleaning improves the air quality of your home and makes you feel better. With a clean smelling chimney, your mood will improve and you’ll be open to welcoming visitors. • Safety - Approximately 23,000 chimney fires occur every year, causing nearly a billion dollars in damage, and potentially the loss of lives. Having your chimney professionally cleaned annually will help you avoid a disaster. • As for your dryer vent, lint doesn’t Left: For over 43 years, Black Hat Cleaning Services owner David Harris, Sr. has been serving N.E. overall health in the home. Chimney sweep services, as well as dryer duct cleaning, are essential for fire prevention, and air duct cleaning is vital for the air quality inside the home, ensuring a healthy breathing environment. These maintenance services also help keep your home smelling nice too. Fire burning chimneys are recommended to be cleaned depending on wood-burning capacity, with a standard recommendation of professional sweep every 3 to 4 ricks of wood burned. Gas burning fireplaces only need to be cleaned every 15 to 20 years. “If you’re not sure if your chimney needs cleaning, at least have it inspected,” David said. “If you’ve never had it cleaned, clean it!” Dryer duct cleaning is sometimes overlooked by homeowners but should be a top priority regarding fire safety. Many home fires are caused every year by the lint that gets trapped within the pipes and, once ignited, can quickly burn throughout a home. “Dryer lint is the best thing you can use to start a campfire,” said David. “It is highly flammable. You don’t want that trapped in your dryer vent as a fire hazard.” David’s sound advice for homeowners is only a small part of the comprehensive service provided by Black Hat. Honesty and integrity are at the forefront of his business practice and what his customers see when they see him in his top hat. “My customers know that they can trust me to be honest, and take care of them, give them peace of mind.” Over the years, just as David’s hat has gotten taller, the services have evolved to become more efficient, time-saving and thorough. Chimney cleaning can take up to 45 minutes. David loves his work and the people he serves. “This is my 43rd year in business with many more years ahead.”

Work & Marriage: Teamwork Makes Dreamwork I

t is said “teamwork makes the dream work,” and these words can apply to almost any situation as motivation to work together, but for Troy and Debbie Edmonds, it means a little bit more. Troy and Debbie have been married for many years, and have worked together for most that of time. Neither of them would dream of working apart. Together, they are part of the incredible staff at Reveal Salon, located at 8929 S. Memorial Dr. #170. The Salon offers clients an array of services, including haircuts, color and styling, skin, anti-aging and acne treatments, nail care and much more. Troy is a full-service stylist at the salon, while Debbie is a certified nail technician. Working together, they are as happy as a married couple could ever be. “We’ve always worked together and have never had a problem,” said Troy. “It just works better for us.” Troy and Debbie met

“We have so many people say they don’t know how we work together, but we’ve always had this special relationship,” we’ve always had this special relationship,” said Debbie. “I just think some people are married, but some people are MARRIED.”

VALUE NEWS BROKEN ARROW APRIL 2021 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

Early in their marriage, Troy owned and operated his own barbershop, called Kings Court. While their two sons were very young, Debbie decided she wanted to go to cosmetology school to learn how to do nails, and upon graduation, began working with her husband. They moved together to work with Nicole McGinnis, owner of Reveal Salon, in 2012. They each have over 25 years of experience working in their specialties. Troy and Debbie have found that working together is not only beneficial for them, but their clients as well. “If you have a good relationship with your clients, they trust your recommendations,” said Debbie. “I have referred my customers to Troy for hair, and he sends his to me for their nails. It’s helpful for people to come to us because we are a good team.” The pair think of each other highly not only personally, but also professionally. “Most of Debbie’s

customers have been with her for over 20 years,” said Troy. “They’re loyal customers because she does such a great job. She does an excellent job and really cares about her clients.” Debbie truly believes in her husband’s work. “95 percent of my clients go to Troy for their hair,” she said. “He really communicates with his clients to make sure he gives them what they want. He’s also just such a nice guy – a really good person.” With a successful working relationship, their advice to other couples considering working together is simple: “We stay really busy, so we don’t just sit around together all day,” said Troy. “If you’re going to work together, you can’t go home and talk about work all the time. Work can’t be 24 hours a day.” Above all, they are proud to provide exceptional customer service as part of the Reveal Salon team. “Nicole is the absolute best for skincare,” said Debbie. “She’s a very nice and honest person, and is excellent at what she does.” Nicole, a licensed aesthetician, provides comprehensive skincare services and expertise in the areas of acne, anti-aging and overall skin health. Reveal Salon’s staff can thoroughly complete any beauty agenda. Appointments at the salon can be made by calling (918) 891-9634, but for an appointment with Troy, call (918) 694-9911, or Debbie at (918) 697-3171. Is it Too Late? Solutions for Back Pain Kyphoplasty Case Study

Have you been told ‘It’s too late to help your back pain.? Through no fault of your own, have you been shuffled through the healthcare (or lack of healthcare) and insurance matrix so long that your injury has healed improperly? Has it taken over 5 years to find a diagnosis and begin treatment? Or maybe you are still searching for one. The exhaustion is real! Just such a situation happened to Dorothy Cohen. It was a long road to be seen by a doctor, get an MRI, figure out what’s wrong and be derailed several times due to insurance circumstances and ‘medical judgment’ to be treated from the beginning of her fall from a ladder, November, 2014. She went to several doctors who said that she would have to live with and manage the pain because there was nothing that could be done. The experience of losing height and managing the chronic pain due to vertebral fractures from her fall were agonizing for nearly 6 years until late February, 2020 when she found Dr. James Webb and his expertise in Kyphoplasty. Dr. Webb’s staff arranged for Dorothy to be seen within a week of her call. They expeditiously scheduled her for an

MRI March 3rd, and she had her first procedure by March 10. Dorothy is now in her 4th treatment and for the first time since the accident, her compressed spine has straightened and her pain, thus far, has been reduced by 75% which has made her life incredibly better. Her struggle to find the care she needed had finally arrived. The medical landscape is constantly changing. Dr. Webb and his staff maintain Above: Dorothy Cohen the highest standards in patient care, technology and procedures. If you have fractures and been told there is nothing that can be done for you, Dr. Webb may be able to help you. You don’t need to wait days, weeks, months or years. Find out today if there is a solution for your chronic back pain.

What is Kyphoplasty?

How does Kyphoplasty help?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that quickly repairs vertebral compression fractures (VCF) and restores structural integrity to broken vertebral bone. Kyphoplasty is an outpatient procedure that uses a cavity creation device (usually a balloon) to create a space in the broken vertebra which is then filled with a special bone cement to stabilize the fracture and reduce pain.

The goal of kyphoplasty is to restore the broken vertebra to a more normal height and to fix the pain caused by the fracture. When a vertebral fracture occurs, it most commonly presents as an acute worsening of chronic lower back pain. Many times the patient’s chronic back pain is getting worse, but it’s actually due to a recent fracture. Many of our patients experience immediate pain relief following kyphoplasty. It can help relieve pain by stabilizing the fracture. Improved mobility results because of decreased pain levels.

Dr. Webb – Kyphoplasty Expert When it comes to kyphoplasty, Dr. Webb is one of the most experienced physicians in the US. Dr. Webb has performed thousands of kyphoplasty procedures and has the experience necessary to safely perform kyphoplasty. In fact, he also teaches other physicians how to safely and effectively perform the procedure. Here are a few facts about Dr. Webb’s kyphoplasty expertise: • He performed over 120 kyphoplasties during his training (fellowship). • Was one of the first physicians to perform kyphoplasty in Oklahoma. • Was a principal investigator in the EVOLVE trial,

the largest ever on-label study of kyphoplasty in Medicare patients with vertebral fractures with 350 patients enrolled over 24 sites across the US. • The first in Oklahoma and one of a few in the nation to establish a full-service outpatient clinic focused on medically treating the underlying causes of osteoporosis in patients with VCF.. • The highest level of experience in the Tulsa area with 300-400 fractures treated per year. • Continues efforts to refine vertebral fracture treatment, consulting for numerous medical device companies and teaching other physicians how to perform this life-saving procedure.

Summertime A TOAST TO

BY SHANNON SMITH

A

h, it’s finally summer! The kids are out of school, the pools are open, the heat is on, and everybody’s hungry. What do you make on those hot summer days when you don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen? My favorite go-to for an inexpensive and tasty meal is toast toppers. There are so many options to topping toast, and you can satisfy everyone’s palate. Whether you toast sourdough, brioche, sandwich loaf, or gluten free bread, you can dress it up with a variety of tastes, including leftovers. Start with a slice of bread that has been browned well in the toaster. It’s important that both sides of the bread are toasted so it doesn’t become soggy when the toppings are added. I like to smear some type of sauce on the toast first, such as mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, plain yogurt, mustard, or hummus. Then you can get creative and add shaved veggies, canned white beans, tuna, sliced boiled eggs, or whatever goes well with the sauce you choose. For a dessert or snack option, you can top the toast with peanut butter or Nutella, and add sliced fruit, nuts, and coconut. Of course, one of my favorite things to top toast is butter, cinnamon and sugar! Here are some of my other favorite toast toppers that make mealtime a little easier, and they’re great for the kids to make on their own. Find more of my recipes on chefshannon.com.

Left: Charles and Becky Zwick.

Zwick Love Story BY CHRIS PUTMAN

O

nce a teacher, always a teacher. If an individual becomes very skilled in a specific area, some develop a compelling drive to want to pass on that expertise to others. That seems to be the case with one Broken Arrow couple, Charles and Becky Zwick. Oral Roberts University Professor Emeritus of Media Production Charles Zwick taught for over 40 years. Passing on knowledge is in his blood. So too with wife Becky Zwick. She taught music for years before seeing the need for a guiding hand with students. Back to school she went and earned the credentials to become the Coweta School Counselor. Clearly, both were bit by the teaching bug and the desire to invest in others. There often is a pattern that one life

experience prepares individuals for the next step. With a lifetime of teaching under their belts, the Zwicks continue their instructing but this time in a more crucial area of life, marriage, and they use the Marriage Encounter, a weekend experience that brings insight into the marriage-relationship building, as their platform. But to back up a bit, how did the Zwicks become the Zwicks? When hearing about a married couple’s first meeting, individuals expect to hear how awestruck they were the moment their eyes met. Ehhhhh! Not so in this fairy tale. Charles Zwick’s sister, Karyn, and Becky Coxe were roommates in a traveling choir and Karyn Zwick had spent the summer talking about her remarkable brother. When Becky Coxe

finally did meet him, she wasn’t impressed. He looked young, she didn’t like his hair and, besides, she was dating someone else, but the ole charmer started making his move. That’s when he overheard something giving him hope that he had a chance with her. “Finding out that she once lived in Toronto and enjoyed hockey, and in her words, ‘I would go with a dog to a hockey game,’ I thought, ‘Great! If I could just get some hockey tickets, I’d qualify,’” Zwick said. Fast-forward 50 years; there are the Zwicks today, two children and two grandchildren. Even teachers can learn a lot in 50 years, and this duo shares what they have gleaned. Their marriage is rock solid, communication is good and the two cherish their time together, and they have some non-negotiable concepts they live by. Becky Zwick says she honors her mate by encouraging and praising him. She feels if she doesn’t communicate that to him, he could feel discouraged and undervalued. In addition, she will fix him a big breakfast or his favorite cake and even sit through television shows she has no interest in so he can watch, all in the name of compromise. When things get intense, they each remember the problem is the problem, and they need to work together to solve the problem. Only one person is allowed to talk at a time, no one talking over the other. If the topic is too tough to talk about, they may write each other a letter expressing their feelings. This bride tries to be sensitive to his needs and gives her partner time and space. She tells her husband several times per day she loves him and apologizes when she is wrong. Sounds pretty intentional, doesn’t it? Well, this couple takes their relationship seriously, and the fruit of it is pretty evident. Becky Zwick is the feisty one of the two, and sometimes she can get herself in trouble. What was her last infraction? “I said something I shouldn’t have said,” Becky Zwick said humbly. “I got the slight turn of the neck, the eye and a small shaking of the head.” His latest infraction? According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), all chimneys should be cleaned at least once every year. Keeping your chimney clean helps prevent home fires—it’s as simple as that. When you burn a fire in your fireplace, two things happen: Chimney soot builds up, as well as creosote, which is a heavy, thick, oily residue similar to tar that’s a byproduct of burning wood. While soot is more easily removable, creosote sticks to the chimney lining, which can be dangerous because it’s extremely flammable.
