Annie Rose Duncan Crowned Broken Arrow’s Miss Rooster Days 2021! BY MACY GOODNIGHT
A
ugust, 2021: The annual Broken Arrow Rooster Days Festival is one of the oldest celebrations in the state, and one of its proudest traditions is the Miss Rooster Days pageant. It’s a timeless event that empowers young women in the community, while embracing the spirit of the city. Since 1954, the annual pageant has given a chance for a college scholarship, as well as a host of opportunities, to the young lady crowned to represent the youth in the community. The Broken Arrow
Chamber organizes and supports the event, and each annual winner of the pageant acts as an ambassador for the city’s youth for the duration of a year. During that time, Miss Rooster Days attends ribbon cuttings for new businesses and many other city events. It is an incredible opportunity to develop networking and leadership skills, as well as provide insight into the workings of the city’s business leaders. On May 17 of this year, Annie Rose Duncan was crowned Miss Rooster Days 2021. Annie is 17 years old and will be a Senior in the upcoming school year. Her hobbies include soccer and cheerleading, and she is a gifted earring designer with her own homebased business. She hosts all of her jewelry creations on her social media, and has attended some vendor fairs with great success in her sales. Her fabulous designs can be found on Instagram @ daringdelights.

Annie competed during the 2020 pageant and received first runnerup, but loved the experience so much, she decided to run again. “All of the girls are so amazing,” she said. “Seeing what they all love about the community, and being able to share why I love Broken Arrow was such a great opportunity.” The crowned Miss Rooster Days maintains a busy schedule, and Annie attended multiple events even on her first day. “I’ve already met so many incredible people, and so many opportunities have already come up from this. I’ve enjoyed just getting to meet all of our city’s leaders.” (continued on next page)

Annie is homeschooled and does not consider herself to be a pageant girl. “This type of thing might scare some people away, but it’s not a typical pageant. It’s so much more than that,” she said. “They really want to see your heart for Broken Arrow and the community.” Lori Lewis, Membership and Community Development Director at the Broken Arrow Chamber, prides the event on its inclusivity, and the confidence it builds for the young women who participate. “The Chamber is a business organization, and we want to see these young women pursue their dreams and the scholarship assists them with further education,” she said. “That’s how the pageant started. We are looking for young women who want to pursue their education at college or tech school, and we want to help facilitate and foster those dreams.”
Pageant Chair, Jamie Wheeler, encourages young women in the community who are interested in participating for next year to reach out now for questions. “We will work with any young lady beforehand who needs it, and we want to make sure anyone who enters is reassured and confident,” she said. “We are here to make the process as smooth, comfortable and exciting as possible.”
Applications for 2022 Miss Rooster Days will be opening in February, and information can be found online at www. brokenarrowchamber.com, or by calling (918) 893-2100.

What You Need to Know About Kitchen Cabinets, Design & Layout It pays to remember Premium Cabinets of Tulsa during your kitchen remodeling process.
A
ugust 2021: Home is where the heart is, and the kitchen is the heart of the home. Just as food nurtures the mind, body and soul…the kitchen is the place where meals are prepared with love, on-the-go and for snack time. People gather there during parties and gatherings for conversation, taste tests and memory-making. For all these reasons your kitchen cabinets are one of the most important choices when renovating. Your cabinetry should provide the perfect balance of function, style and inspiration. Established in 2004, Premium Cabinets of Tulsa has built a strong
reputation for providing their customers with high quality cabinetry while maintaining affordability. Premium Cabinets of Tulsa is locally owned and family-operated. “My dad and I started the company. Now it’s a whole new generation with me, my wife and kids,” said Austin Gullic. You’ll enjoy dozens of choices of wood cabinetry styles and colors for kitchens and bathrooms. Design assistance is also provided. The importance of design and planning cannot be underestimated. It is key to making your space userfriendly for you and your family. They will help you with all the details including the ones sometimes overlooked. “As my family has grown,

so has my grasp on optimizing family spaces. I have training and understanding of kitchens, and my family has given me an even greater appreciation for the heart of the home.” Premium Cabinets of Tulsa enables clients to preview their visions using a 3D tour. From start to finish, a project can be completed within two to three months. As their cabinets are completely finished before installation, time spent without use of the space is minimal, and there are no dangerous fumes. Appointments for consultations are preferred, so that each client receives one-on-one personal attention. Many other cabinetry businesses were unable to weather the storm of the past year, but Premium Cabinets of Tulsa survived successfully, with

a 30 percent increase in sales. Austin attributes their growth to the quality they provide. “Our reviews and our reputation are what made us so successful,” he said. “We are really grateful for the respect of our clients and their referrals; and we are truly blessed and proud of what we’ve been able to create and continue to grow.” Premium Cabinets of Tulsa’s designs can be an enhancement not only in kitchen and bath but can extend to
built-ins for entertainment centers and around fireplaces, or storage in game rooms, and even wine cabinets. There are endless possibilities to increase the organizational flow within a home. One of the things that Austin loves the most about his work, is sitting with his clients and getting into the needs and wishes at the heart of the design. “I live by an attitude of gratitude,” he said. “I, and my staff, love making each client feel special. What You Need to Know About Concrete Driveways:
Higher Standards, Set in Concrete
BY MACY GOODNIGHT
A
ugust 2021: Home improvement is currently trending, and honestly, never goes out of style. However, for obvious reasons, more and more people are increasing their
investment of time and money into their sanctuaries, whether for updates, replacements or additions. The first impression of any home is the driveway that leads to the house itself. Add that to the top of the list when making your next improvement investment. One of the most underappreciated parts of a home may very well be the driveway. Incidentally, most people won’t notice how important this facet really is, until it’s in need of repair. If your driveway is cracked, chipped, stained, or generally in need of renewal, LCI Concrete is your solution. Owner, Kalan Paul, has been in business helping homeowners in Tulsa and surrounding areas alleviate their

Functionality is a priority, as physical hazards such as holes or cracks can wreak havoc on a vehicle and its wheels and tires. Driveway replacement can add to the value of the home and is a good investment. “I don’t think anyone would lose money replacing a driveway,” Kalan said. “It’s amazing what it can do for the look of a home.” LCI takes great pride in the speed at which they are able to complete their work. Removing and replacing 50,000 lbs and beyond of material requires a great deal of effort! Most homeowners appreciate being able to utilize their driveway as quickly as possible, and they consider this a top priority. “We lead the way as a well-oiled machine,” said Kalan. “In most cases, we show up early, work hard, remove and replace driveways within one day!” Most projects can be completed in one to two days. Their business philosophy focuses on three major points: customer satisfaction, quality workmanship and minimizing a homeowner’s downtime.

Broken Arrow Announces New Departments, Directors General Services Director Retires After 32 Years BY JENNIFER SWEZEY
T
he City of Broken Arrow is pleased to announce the selection of two new directors that will take over responsibilities of the City’s solid waste and maintenance services operations, respectively, which were previously managed under one department called General Services. Jerry Schuber will lead Solid Waste and Recycling, and Ryan Baze will lead Maintenance Services. City Manager Michael Spurgeon said, “Broken Arrow is a growing community, and it is important

for city operations to reflect and respond to that growth.” He added, “now that the City is providing residential curbside recycling service, the sanitation division requires an updated department model to streamline operations.” To improve organizational effectiveness and efficiency, last year Spurgeon recommended the restructuring of the General Services Department into two stand-alone departments. Changes were also made at that time to move logistics (purchasing) over to the Finance Department and cemetery operations to the Parks & Recreation Department, respectively. In addition, there was an overall focus on asset management needed which will be done through the new department model. The City Council authorized the restructuring proposal in October 2020, including amendments to the applicable city ordinances. The new Solid Waste Department manages sanitation and recycling operations, and the new Maintenance Services Department includes four divisions: Operations, Fleet Maintenance, Building Maintenance and Property Services (Assets). General Services Director Lee Zirk is retiring April 16, after 32 years of employment with the City. Zirk
started as a mechanic in the fleet division and worked his way up to the director position. He recently retired from the military in 2020 and looks forward to enjoying a full retirement this month. Schuber, a California native, brings vast solid waste management experience to Broken Arrow. He most recently worked for the City of Fresno for over 20 years in Solid Waste, Utilities and Planning leadership roles. Schuber also worked for Waste Management Industries for seven years. He holds a master’s degree in business administration and technology management and starts May 10.

The City is also excited to announce the selection of Ryan Baze for the role of Maintenance Services Director. Baze is an Oklahoma native and has tremendous leadership experience in the field of facilities and fleet services. He most recently served as the Director of Facilities for Rogers County for nine years. He starts in Broken Arrow May 4.

elements visitors have come to love and expect, but with so much more! The longest running festival in the state is hosted annually by the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce, with the support of sponsors. Live entertainment, carnival, rides, food, and a vendor market are always just part of the fun! New
this year, a Beer Garden is planned with televisions broadcasting the days’ games. The Rooster Days 5k Run will return, as well as the annual parade, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m., and a cornhole tournament at 1 p.m. that day. through a fun and exciting weekend, ending Sunday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, and single and mega-ride passes can be purchased. Scott Eudey, City Councilor, Attorney and Event Chairman, is proud to be a part of such an honored tradition. “It’s Broken Arrow’s homecoming,” he said. “It’s a time where we can make memories, and celebrate past memories.” Rooster Days began in 1931, as a way for the local farmers to manage their rooster populations, as well as an infertile egg market. The following year would boast the headline entertainment of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. The event has proven over the years to not only be a time-honored tradition for the city, but for folks traveling in from around the state for some top-quality fun and entertainment. “This year we have some very exciting new things, and everything you love about Rooster Days,” said Scott. “Yes, you can get your corn dog, funnel cake and a hamburger. We will
make sure you get everything you enjoy about Rooster Days.” The annual parade is a fan favorite, with loads of antique and modern cars, floats, bands and more. Get there early to grab a front row seat, between the starting point at College and Main Streets, to the finish at the gates of Rooster Days at 1500 S. Main St. Miss Rooster Days will be in attendance as well as her court, and of course, “The Pride of Broken Arrow,” Broken Arrow High School’s awardwinning marching band. All of the fun at the festival awaits at the end of the parade! The Cornhole Tournament, will take place at the Central Park Pool parking lot, Saturday. Check-in time
is at 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and the competition will begin at noon. The cost per twoperson team is $50 to enter. This is a double elimination tournament with a cash payout to the first and second place winning teams. A Corporate Night will be offered, “for any companies that want to celebrate their staff by letting them enjoy Rooster Days this year,” said Scott. More information can be found on the Broken Arrow Chamber website at www. brokenarrowchamber.com, www. roosterdays.com, or on Facebook @roosterdays. Voyage Broken Arrow Raising Funds for Public Exhibit
A
The exhibit is a scale model walkway of the solar system.
ugust, 2021: Watch for it!!! Voyage, a $50,000 scale model walkway through the solar system, is coming to a town near you! Yes, the same Voyage Solar System Exhibit that is on the National Mall that starts right outside of Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum. Imagine walking down Albany Street in Broken Arrow, OK, and learning all about your Solar System. Imagine stopping by the Sun where you can see how big the Sun is compared to our Earth. Imagine your children seeing Mars and Venus up close! Imagine all children learning about the size of Mars and Venus and their distances from our Sun, then moving on to see solar storm systems – the Great Red Spot on Jupiter
and the Dark Spot on Neptune and so much more! A group of retired and current Broken Arrow educators and community leaders have come together to bring Voyage to Broken Arrow. The idea and design for the walkway originated in Broken Arrow in the late 1990s when astrophysicist, Dr. Jeff Goldstein, came to BA Schools for workshops and community programs. Since then, Voyage models have been placed on the National Mall in Washington DC, Kansas City, MO and Corpus Christi, TX. Help us make Broken Arrow a place where everyone can experience the awe and beauty of our Solar System. This exhibition will become a must-

visit place and you can be part of bringing this unique exhibition to our community. It will forever change your perspective of our home. Broken Arrow’s Voyage Solar System walkway will be installed along the sidewalk in front of Creekwood Elementary School and Creekwood PreK School continuing east toward the Broken Arrow High School campus. The entrance to Voyage is located at 1301 E. Albany Street. We will all be explorers. From two-year-olds to 102-year-olds – we will travel to the end of our solar system and come to know our home for the very first time. The model is built to a 1/10 billionth scale of the solar system. Both the distance and size of the planets are on this same scale. The walkway extends about 2,000 ft. from entry near the Sun to the exit just beyond Pluto. Make an individual donation or sponsor a planet by contacting Keep Broken Arrow Beautiful or on Go Fund Me. About half of the funding needed for the installation of the exhibition is in place - three planets have already been funded by local donors. Be the next to sponsor a planet! Just think, you can sponsor our home Earth or Venus or even Pluto – yes, it is back to being a planet!

A MEETING OF HOPE: TREATMENT WITH DR. JAMES WEBB
Why did you choose Dr. Webb? I had back surgery in 2002 and was on pain meds and had lots of issues. I went to [a local orthopedic group] and as soon as they saw what I was going through, they sent to Dr. Webb. They said “He can help you”.
What procedure did you have done? I had the Kyphoplasty! It has helped!
What was your experience like? It worked well. Not having the problems that I was. We have a few more treatments to go. I really wish that I had known about Dr. Webb before I had back surgery.
Would you refer Dr. Webb? Oh, without a doubt! Actually, I already have! I really like him. Truthfully, I love everyone In à vwVio°°Ƃ ` Ì ` Ì i Ì >Ì Ì i Ì iÀ `>Þo» Ûi Þ Õ }ÕÞû

Eco-Friendly Cabinet Refinishing
Gleam Guard Restores and Refinishes Cabinets & Woodwork A
ugust, 2021: Fall is on its way and with the cooler weather coming in; you can finally get to your home renovation list before the holidays, starting with your cabinets. While cabinets’ purpose is functional, they remain a focal point of the home. Whether your cabinets are in extremely rough shape, have only a few smudges or are covered in thick grease from years of cooking, Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing is the eco-friendly quick, clean and odor-free choice. They are an A+ Rated BBB Accredited company and offer reasonably priced and highly effective solutions for restoring and refinishing your cabinetry and woodwork. “We can refinish cabinets that are in really bad shape. We can also clean your cabinets and give them a new, permanent finish,” says owner Tracy Booth. “The Gleam Guard finishes are available in either shiny or satin. When we apply our Gleam Guard system, it bonds to the original finish and makes the surface smooth and dry. The process Left: Gleam Guard Founder, Tracy Booth.

remarkably enhances wood grain and keeps it looking oiled and polished. Old imperfections cannot be seen. This is an ultra low odor process; it is completely safe for even those with serious breathing problems to be in the house.” The entire mess-free Gleam Guard process takes only one to two days to complete, so your kitchen can be transformed in time for the holidays. Whole house projects, which include kitchen and bath cabinets, baseboards, doors, moldings, paneling and just about any other vertical wood surface, can be done in three to five days. Tracy’s son, Phillip Booth, manages their Tulsa Metro office along with Jonathan. Phillip and his professional craftsmen are continuing the legacy that Tracy started over 30 years ago. They have perfected their skill, timing and attention to detail. Their process begins by preparing the surfaces with a thorough cleaning to remove dirt and debris and making any reparation of damaged areas. Damaged areas are treated with custom-matched stain blends. Lastly, the cabinets are protected with a coating that will keep cabinetry and woodwork looking fresh

for decades. A special over-glazing is used when you want to change the color of the wood. Dust-free and non-toxic, the process works on traditional wood surfaces, along with those which are painted, glazed and pickled. A real big plus is that you don’t have to empty cabinets or remove hardware prior to the process. Each job comes with a free 5-year touch up warranty. “We have customers we served over 20 years ago who say their cabinets still look great even today. It is because of our hometown people in the greater Tulsa area that we were able to expand and help families across the country beautify their homes, including Kansas City, Branson, Northwest Washington and Canada,” he says. The Gleam Guard crew will be in and out, without interruptions or breakaways. Their work area, when finished, will look like no one was there. Aftercare is as simple as wiping with a
damp cloth. Tracy says when people see the difference Gleam Guard has made in friends’ or relatives’ homes, they are sold. Even those considering new cabinets or refacing old cabinets frequently decide on Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing instead. It’s the sensible solution that makes a big difference. Gleam Guard often costs clients 70 percent less when compared to other options. “I love to show people how they can save money and still have beautiful wood finishes that look like new,” says Tracy. To complete the makeover, the team can also deep clean rock and stone interior
surfaces, such as fireplaces, as well as ceilings – even popcorn ceilings. A Gleam Guard technician would be happy to do an in-home demonstration on an existing cabinet door to give owners a glimpse of what Gleam Guard will look like in their homes.

ugust, 2021: For over 40 years, the Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association has worked to keep a part of our cultural history alive with their annual Woodcarving and Arts Festival. The event will take place September 10-11, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Central Park Community Center at 1500 S. Main in Broken Arrow. Invited arts include woodcarving and

wood turning, gourds, mosaics, jewelry, blacksmithing, quilting, ceramics, beading, leather working, basketmaking, painting and much more! Approximately 70 vendors are expected to be in attendance. Admission is free. Woodcarving workshops for youth, ages 13 and up, will be available, to encourage the next generation of woodworkers to carry on this century’s old tradition. The beginners carving classes will be held at 1 p.m. on both days of the
festival. The Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association, or EOWA, is a nonprofit, charitable organization that is “dedicated to preserving, promoting, and expanding the timeless art form of woodcarving. “We don’t have many new people coming into woodworking,” said event publicist and worldrenowned woodcarver, Bill Payne. “Younger people aren’t often as interested in working with their hands.” Finding authentically produced, hand-crafted wood sculptures and art is becoming more rare, as older generations of woodworkers are beginning to fade away. presented the festival in 1975, with around 50-60 exhibitors that came from all over the country. “But they got old, just like me,” said Bill. “There aren’t too many other pure woodcarving shows left. They’re pretty rare.” Bill, who is also a military veteran, has been working with wood most of his life. “I’ll work with any kind of wood one time,” he said. “Wood crafting is part of our history and culture, and it’ll last a lifetime.” With the decrease in the number of woodworkers over
the years available to participate in the shows, the decision was made to open the showcase up to a broader spectrum of artisans. “Opening up to other art forms has worked pretty well for us,” said Bill. Carol Alley, co-publicist, will exhibit her extraordinary talents in embroidery, with an array of ever popular tea towels and other handcrafted items for sale. “Everything the vendors bring must be handmade by the vendor, so nothing will be resale,” she

said. “Everything is juried to be authentic and handmade.” The festival will offer a chance to find early holiday gifts that will be unique, high in quality, and could be an heirloom for generations. Vasectomy Questions and Answers Concerns, Side Effects and Expectations BY THOMAS RICKNER, M.D., UROLOGY
A
ugust, 2021: Is a vasectomy really painless? What do I do about swelling after the procedure? Is it invasive? Does a vasectomy affect my sex life? What should I do before the procedure? Getting a vasectomy is a safe and simple procedure that provides an effective form of birth control without enormous risks. If you and your partner decide you need a more permanent approach to birth control, there are a number of questions to ask before a vasectomy. After getting all of your questions answered, you and your partner can work together to come to a decision. While this article is a starting point, don’t be afraid to ask any other questions you have during our consultation. As your doctor, I am prepared to help you understand your vasectomy and will be able to provide all the answers you may have. 1.Why is shaving the night before a vasectomy beneficial? When someone shaves the razor causes small abrasions or even very small puncture wounds over the area that is shaved. These small injuries heal over the next few hours. How
38 |
Above: Dr. Thomas Rickner specializes solely on vasectomies and has performed well over 1,000 procedures.
long it depends on how deep or large the wound is that has occurred. Normally since these are very small unless someone cuts himself when he is shaving a few hours is all that is required. So as a minimum shaving should occur at least 12 hours before the vasectomy is performed. This would keep down the incidence of infections. Although there are no studies it is probably true that shaving should occur at least one and maybe even two days before the vasectomy. The hair growth that would occur over that time would be insignificant but the benefit in diminishing skin injuries and subsequent infection would be great. 2. Will my ability to have an erection following vasectomy change? There should be no change in a man’s ability to achieve an erection following a vasectomy. The mechanism
VALUE NEWS BROKEN ARROW AUGUST 2021 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM
for trapping blood in a man’s phallus is completely separate in location from the vasectomy site. as well as from where a vasectomy occurs. Also, it is common to believe that testosterone may have something to do with erections, but it actually does not. Libido is dependent on testosterone but that is by a different mechanism and only indirectly effects erections. A vasectomy does not change either the blood supply to the phallus or testosterone levels. 3. What is a no scalpel vasectomy? In 1989 the no scalpel technique came from China to New York City and subsequently spread across the country. No scalpel is used to make an incision. Rather a very pointed instrument is used to precisely puncture the skin directly over the vas deferens (the tube carrying sperm). This puncture site is subsequently spread wider so the
Vas can be brought to the surface and transected. The Vas is then transected and occluded. The occluded ends of the Vas are allowed to retract. This small puncture wound then contracts and no suture is even required. The small puncture wound heals itself in 24 to 48 hours with no suture needed. This small opening has also helped cut down on wound infections. 4. How to use ice correctly. The coldness produced by ice is beneficial in many situations because lower temperatures result in contraction of blood vessels. Therefore, bleeding is minimized using ice. However, ice cannot be placed directly on the skin or else there will be complete loss of blood supply to that area involved. That skin will die if the ice is left in direct contact for too long a period. So, first, never place ice directly on your skin. Rather ice should be inside some form of a protective covering. Secondly, ice should be used for around 20 minutes at a time and no more frequently than every two hours. This should continue for somewhere between 1 to two days following a vasectomy. Thirdly, considering the advances indicated above where the dissection is much less than before, ice is not needed for as long a period of time. In days gone by ice was used intermittently for 3 to five days. Now usually 2 to three days is sufficient if accompanied with activity restrictions. 5. What is a painless vasectomy? How can a vasectomy be painless?
Well, it is actually not totally painless but almost. Although it seems a contradiction the higher the number the smaller the size of a needle. Technology has now advanced and whereas needles of 23 and 25 have been used for some time, needles are now being manufactured that are 33 and even 35-gauge (out of South Korea at first). However, those are so small that not enough of the anesthetic can be administered, even though those needles usually cannot be felt hen used. The newer alternative is not to use needles at all. Rather we now can use a spring-loaded injector that creates a high-pressure spray. This spray penetrates the skin with no evidence of entry at all. This technique creates instantaneous anesthesia in area of the spray. During a vasectomy 2 to 3 sprays are required on each side. The first 1 on each side may have some discomfort but subsequently are not felt at all. Most men say that the first spray feels about like having a rubber band snapped against your skin. A further advantage of this technique is that the volume of anesthetic that is administered
Above: Alejandra is an expert assistant to Dr. Rickner.
is extremely small compared to old volumes with the use of needles. Consequently, side effects of anesthetic administration are almost eliminated. Now there are many other questions that could be asked and these will be supplied when you visit our office before your vasectomy. We encourage you to bring your questions with you as well. At Tulsa Vasectomy Clinic, vasectomy procedures are done in-office and will usually take about 20 to 30 minutes. Your time is important to us. You can schedule your consultation and vasectomy for the same day or on separate dates.

If you cancel 6 days or less before the originally-scheduled appointment and you wish to reschedule the appointment then you will need to pay a new scheduling fee. We have this policy out of consideration for other clients who may have wished to schedule in the time slot reserved for you, but did not have the opportunity because it was held for you. If you cancel very close to the appointment, someone else did not have a chance to schedule in that time. If you cancel at any time and don’t reschedule, you forfeit the $100 rescheduling fee. We are available by phone during regular clinic hours. We offer the option of either a single visit for consultation and procedure, or you can choose to have separate appointments for the initial consultation and procedure. Nov. 16, 2021
