By Duane Blankenship Tulsa New Holland is still located on East Pine in Tulsa and has been serving area customers for 33 years. They’re recognized as the area headquarters for tractors, outdoor power and hay equipment. Tulsa New Holland sells and services wellknown brands and provides exemplary service on everything they sell. General Manager Kelly Umphrey says, “Parts and service are the backbone of our dealership. We focus on hiring well-trained, highly experienced technicians with the expectation that they’re going to be here long term. We need to like our

employees, and they’ve got to like us, and that creates a win-win situation for Tulsa New Holland and our customers.” Tulsa New Holland features New Holland, Mahindra, Cub Cadet, Bush Hog and Woods products. Cub Cadet has ranked Tulsa New Holland a Top-100 Dealer since 2000. According to President Mike McCrate, “Tulsa New Holland is truly a rarity because we are family-owned and operated and all business is done out of our location on Pine Street.” McCrate’s (continued on page 22)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Which Money Personality Are You? BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT Money is a funny thing. Folks will tell you just about anything about themselves before they will talk about money. It is such a taboo topic that many parents don’t even talk about it with their children. Why is that? Is the topic really that delicate and intimate that it needs to be avoided? Will Smith said it best when he stated, “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” As sure as the sky is blue, money is a part of life. It has many personalities; here are a few! The High Roller – This is the type that is all in, no holding back. They believe that the bigger the risk, the better. They may win the jackpot, or they may go home with their tail between their legs. The thrill of the chase is the driving force behind this money personality. The Bean Counter – This person saves for a rainy day. They are bargain hunters. Bean Counters refuse to pay full price for clothing, food, or entertainment. They are sometimes perceived as a cheapskate. These folks are very resourceful. However, sometimes they miss out on the fun of living everyday life.

things. Money isn’t something to be afraid of. Being aware of your finances isn’t frightening. If you check regularly, they won’t be such a shock at the end of the month.

The Penny Priest – This group tends to have of strong religious or political ties in regards to their finances. They have been led to believe that money is the root of all evil. Good, bad or indifferent, money is a way to obtain basic necessities, and support charitable causes. The Budget Buster – These are the spenders of the group. They believe money is earned to be spent. Budget Busters have a spend first, think later mentality. Earning and spending money is part of life. Living above your means shouldn’t be! You don’t need to keep up with The Joneses. That is a slippery slope. The Duck and Cover – This money personality doesn’t want anything to do with finances. They ignore they even exist. Either they don’t feel at ease talking about the subject, or they feel as though their time is better spent on other

The Worry Wart – These money personalities question every purchase that they make. From a cup of coffee to a car, money is always on their mind. They hope they spend it wisely. They think about the worst case scenario in regards to the markets, their accounts, and finances as a whole. Every decision is monumental in their mind. In truth, in might not be. Whether you are a spender, saver, gambler or avoider, it takes all kinds of kinds. The trick is finding balance when it comes to your money. an CCreate Outdoor Oasis Outdoor Creations specializes in professional styled outdoor living. By Duane Blankenship Jake Nicks established Outdoor Creations three years ago. He and his team of experts consider

the outside of your home just as important as its interior. Outdoor Creations provides large pool houses, hardscaping, roofing, French drains, and Jake’s favorite,

complete backyard renovations for outdoor living at its finest. Outdoor Creations also builds quality homes, remodels condos and apartments, and flips homes. Jake spent his youth in Las Vegas, where his father was a construction project manager. Jake grew up working with his father and eventually came to Broken Arrow to attend Rhema Bible College. Upon graduation, he began doing what he had enjoyed all his life, construction and remodeling. Jake soon found that customers were asking him to do a variety of projects and decided that starting his own business was a natural progression. Jake and the Outdoor Creations team provide a full range of superior services at competitive rates to residents of greater Tulsa

and beyond. “Our company has grown from a two-person operation to a full staff of professionals that are able to meet your every landscaping and remodeling need,” says Jake. “By remaining consistently dedicated to performing at the highest standards, we continue to build long-term relationships with our clients.” The team’s reputation for customer satisfaction has made Outdoor Creations a household name in their industry. All of Jake’s employees are background checked, and the company is fully insured. Outdoor Creations has a perfect rating with BBB and Angie’s List. “We don’t farm out projects to independent contractors, and our customers are assured they will receive the highest standard of products and services whenever they hire us to do a project.” Although Outdoor Creations does not perform plumbing or electrical requirements, Jake recommends companies specializing in these areas whenever they are needed on a project. This is explained at the

onset of a project, and you will be invoiced directly by the company doing the service. When you’re ready to begin remodeling or expanding your outdoor living experience, the Outdoor Creations team will consult with you to determine your exact needs for improving your home’s living space, whether inside or outside. You’ll be provided expert advice, creative ideas and an estimate to complete the project. When the job is finished and meets or exceeds your expectations, you’ll pay the amount agreed upon – never more than the amount presented in the estimate. If you’re thinking of making an idea happen – a pool, patio, pergola, fireplace or fire pit – Outdoor Creations will visit with you and present a free, three-dimensional design for you to consider for your backyard. Jake loves to please customers and says, “There’s nothing I enjoy more than presenting a finished product. It’s very important to me that I consistently do my best to deliver the highest standards on every job, for every person. It’s very rewarding when we deliver a finished project that exceeds our customer’s expectations.”

High Tech Makes Dental Appointments Faster & Easier Same day crowns and soft tissue lasers are two technologies that make going to the dentist more convenient. By Dr. Steven White Dentistry today has become more convenient, more effective and more comfortable – all major reasons to NOT fear going to the dentist. There are many technologies that we have invested in to bring the best state-of-theart care to our patients. I would like to introduce you to two of them. Same Day Crowns Digital impressions make it possible to produce porcelain crowns and onlays in 1 appointment. We can now take an impression with a camera, instead of the messy, gaggy impression materials you have had to put up with for so long. The picture the camera takes allows us to make a restoration while you wait – or we can complete other dental treatment needed during this “while you wait” time. There are numerous advantages for you with this new technology. The impressions are far more accurate, making the fit of the crowns even better. The impression taking process is much easier and less messy. Also, you only need to get your mouth numb one time and you don’t have to wear a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made. And, you only have to make one trip instead of two.

Different lasers perform varied functions. Our laser performs various treatments on the cheeks, lips, and gum tissue. We utilize it to trim excess gum tissue and make impression taking more precise. We can remove tissue growths and break up pigmentations (discolorations) in the lips and cheeks. The laser can also treat herpetic lesions – cold sores and fever blisters, by shortening the duration and reducing the pain they cause. Another opportunity for the laser is in helping to treat gum disease. As part of our deep cleaning procedures, the laser is used in the infected gums to help create an environment to help the gums heal more effectively.

The Backbone of Our Business management team includes General Manager Kelly Umphrey, Parts Manager John Asmus, and Mike’s son, Service Manager Travis McCrate. Most Tulsa New Holland employees have been at the job for 10 to 20 years. Diesel Technician Tony Bates has been with the company 24 years. A mechanic for ten years, Tony later became a heavy equipment specialist while working in the Rogers County coal mines. He received foundational

diesel training working with the company’s Caterpillar mechanic. In 1992, Tony responded to a newspaper ad for a diesel mechanic with Tulsa New Holland. “I thought it might be a good place to work for two or three years, and I’m still here!” Travis McCrate added, “Tony has a cult following. His customers always ask for him.” Kelly Umphrey said, “Tony is a mechanical genius. There’s nothing he can’t fix. His tool collection is probably worth more

than my house, and he frequently builds his own specialty tools.” Kelly and Travis agreed that Tony rarely has a bad day. He is dependable, calm and level-headed, but both acknowledged that he does have a darker side – Tony is a prankster. With his great sense of humor, Tony relishes the opportunity to “get” fellow employees and then innocently shrug his shoulders when asked if he “knows anything” about a particular prank. There are three things Tony

is adamant about: Keep a clean work bay. Keep the shop floor dry and free of oil. If you should gain permission to borrow a tool and don’t return it in a timely fashion, beware… you are in trouble. Tulsa New Holland has an A+ rating with the Tulsa Better Business Bureau. “Without great service support,” says Kelly, “there wouldn’t be any repeat sales.” So, whether you’re mowing your yard, maintaining an acreage or baling hay, Tulsa New

American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women 2016 Saves Lives continued from page 1 combined. Fortunately, this can change, because 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Value News readers can help. All it takes to impact a life is getting more informed about the risks of heart disease and stroke. Learn the red flags. Know your own personal family “heart health story.” And don’t be afraid to talk to your family, friends or physician if you become concerned about anything “out of the ordinary” health-wise for you. We are fortunate to have a strong chapter of the American Heart Association (AHA) here in Tulsa. The mission of the AHA is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That single purpose drives everything their team does. Growing out of that mission is a focus on heart-health education and wellness for females, known as the Go Red for Women campaign. Each spring, they coordinate a major fundraising event that supports community-wide health awareness programs and activities. “The need for AHA’s work and our support is beyond question,” said John “Jay” Foley, COO of Cancer Treatment Centers of America and the 2015 Go Red for Women Chair, with the help of his wife, Nita. “My passion for AHA comes from how heart disease has affected my life. When I was 15, my father died of cardiac arrest in front of my family in our living room. It led me to become an EMT in college, and to pursue a career in emergency medicine after graduation. As an EMT, I responded to many cardiac emergencies and witnessed the toll it took on the families that were left behind.” According to Foley, his maternal grandfather died of a cardiac arrest when he was still in grammar school. “Seven years ago, my sister also collapsed in her home in front of her family from a car-

diac event and passed away. She was in her mid-50s and was otherwise in excellent health. “Nita and I are asking our friends, neighbors, co-workers and fellow business and civic leaders to join the Go Red movement – to unite to prevent heart disease and stroke,” said Foley. “Our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends are at risk. With the arrival of April weather comes a chance to garden or enjoy the outdoors, celebrate graduations, or plan a Mom’s Day gathering. It’s also time to put our hearts into it and Go Red For Women, so Nita and I invite you to please join us at this year’s luncheon on May 13!” Visit ahatulsa.ejoinme.org/MyEvents/2015201 6TulsaGoRedLuncheon/tabid/731496/D efault.aspx and consider these ways to get involved: volunteer, register for the luncheon, make a donation, or sponsor a table. “Please help us support the AHA,” added Foley. “I believe the role AHA plays in awareness, education screenings and the like are providing lifesaving lessons for our community.” The Tulsa Go Red Luncheon will be Friday, May 13 at Hyatt Regency Tulsa, 100 E. 2nd St. in Tulsa. Ticket prices are $250 per person. Donations of any denomination are welcome to support the event. RSVPs are due by May 11.

Why Does It Hurt? And Why Are You Still Dealing with It? By Dr. David Fields I can't tell you how many times a day I get the question,“Why does it hurt, Doc?” We all know when something isn't working right in our bodies. Back pain, neck pain, headache, knee pain, shoulder pain, pain that shoots down into our legs or arms, and numbness plague so many of us. Some people chalk it up to past injury, or maybe just getting older, but the truth is that the vast majority of the time these are

biomechanical problems. Biomechanical really just means how our bodies move. All biomechanical problems boil down to two things. You are not in the right position and you don't move right. Imagine what would happen if you put a car tire on crooked and drove it down the street. Imagine all of the excessive wear and tear this would cause on your car, and the longer you drove it that way the worse it would get. Your body is the same way. If you are holding yourself in the wrong position, you won't work right. This will cause excess wear and tear on your joints, your muscles, your tendons, your discs in your spine, and on your nerves. So now the next question is,"How do we get that way?" For most people it boils down to what you do all day. As we go through our lives we start some bad habits. We lift incorrectly or too much or too repetitively. We sit for long periods of time with bad posture. We get out of shape. Sometimes we sustain an injury that changes the way we walk or move like a limp or lean to avoid the pain. Over a long period of time our bodies change, our posture changes, the way we move changes, and we literally retrain our bodies into a bad pattern of movement. As I mentioned before this is what leads to the wear and tear that causes our symptoms. So, if you

have been told you have a herniated disc, arthritis, tendinitis, carpal tunnel, sciatica, degenerative joint disease, lumbalgia or the like...now you know why and how. So what now? Are you stuck like that forever? Do you just have to learn how to live with your condition? Do you have to keep taking meds until it gets bad enough that you need surgery? Absolutely not! The solution is simple. It is in fact the opposite process of how you got like that in the first place. You have to retrain your body to work correctly again. First we have to reduce your pain with things like heat, massage, ultrasound, and electrotherapy. We can even take the pressure off of your discs with our state of the art decompression machine. Next we have to get those joints back in place and moving freely with manipulation (also called an adjustment). Then we start in on the rehabilitation. Rehabilitation addresses the muscles. Since the muscles are the things that position your body and do the movement, we need to train them. By doing specific stretches and exercises, we can reprogram your body so that you actually move right again. This will bring you back to normal and stop all of that excessive wear and tear. If you are having any of these biomechanical problems, if you are sick of taking pain meds, if you are wanting to avoid a surgery, then please call us and let us get you back to normal.

The second is the charity DONATE area and the third is the Goodwill area. These areas need to be close to the closet you are sorting. The donate items and the Goodwill items can be placed in large trash bags. When you finish you can drag these bags to the door and call the charities to come pick them up. • Grab the first group of hangers, or shoes, belts, scarves, and sort each item into one of the three piles. You only keep what fits right now, what you will actually wear, and does not need repair. If you have not repaired it by now it probably needs to go. • Be honest about your size. If the pants don’t fit you must donate! Are the shoes uncomfortable or will the blouse not button? Donate. Do not keep an item because you paid a lot for it and do not want to waste money.

Hanging in your closet and not being worn means this item has become worthless, give it a second life by donating or consigning it. There are clothing consignment stores where you give them your usable clothing and they sell it for you at a price they determine. • Now that you have sorted all your closet items, take time to vacuum and dust the shelves. It is amazing how much lint builds up. • When putting your closet back together, organize in a way that makes sense to you. This can be done by putting outfits together, or all of your pants in one place, your shirts in another, etc. Remember to put clothes that are seldom used in the back. OHCE Friendship Day

The annual event will include knitting and basket weaving classes on May 2.

By Julie Alexander At 90 years young, Mary Ellen Kingdom is an active community volunteer for several local organizations. But she always makes time for knitting, her favorite hobby. She will pass along her knowledge during a class on May 2 at the OSU Extension Center. Friendship Day is held annually by Oklahoma Home Community Education. The

one-day event includes classes in basket weaving and knitting, and there will be information booths set up for those interested in joining OHCE. Membership dues are $23 per year. Last year’s Friendship Day was a huge success, and Membership Chair Kathy Erwin is hoping to attract even more participants this year. A member

of the group for 33 years, Erwin’s involvement began when she was a small child. “My grandmother used to take me to her meetings, when they were called home demonstrations meetings,” she said, adding the groups were later called home extension clubs. Founded in 1935, the OHCE is a group dedicated to strengthening families through education and community service. But the group’s roots date back to the late 19th century. Life was tough in the 1890s, and women depended on each other for advice and help keeping their families intact. They formed different clubs to share information about growing vegetables, canning, sewing and other household necessities. As the number of women (L to R): Yvonne Dulaney, Mary Ellen Kingdom and Kathy Erwin invite you involved grew, their importance was to OHCE’s annual Friendship Day.

www.ValueNews.com recognized by the US Department of Agriculture and the Cooperative Extension Service was formed in the1930s. As membership in these groups grew, so did the quality of life for many families, especially the children. The main areas of concern were nutrition, disease diagnosis, child development and other issues of the day that were considered life threatening. The main objective was the health and happiness of the American family. And more than a century later, the goals of the OHCE remain very much the same, said Erwin. Kingdom, who will teach a knitting class on Friendship Day, said the OHCE has become an integral part of the community by helping local non-profits. The Tulsa area has seven different groups, each meeting once a month in various locations and each taking a local charity under its wings. Kingdom’s group, the Candleliters, contributes to Happy Hands, a school for hearing impaired children 6 and younger. “Every meeting we bring toilet paper, paper towels, computer paper and stamps and we deliver them to the school,” she said. “One year I sewed costumes for their Christmas play. Other clubs do different things for other groups.” Other area non-profits that receive help from OHCE include the Tulsa MS Walk, Quilts of Valor, the Jenks Food Bank and the Tulsa County Emergency Shelter. They also provide scholarships to area students. With more than 86 members

in the Tulsa area, the individual groups meet monthly and present programs on a variety of topics, including meal planning and preparation, estates and wills, and more. The OHCE is one of the main sponsors of the Tulsa County Free Fair, held each July at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Exchange Center. Held in conjunction with area 4H clubs, participants compete in more than 100 categories including baking, canning, sewing, quilting, horticulture, and photography. It’s free and open to the public. The deadline to register for the Friendship Day classes is April 15. The day includes two four-hour classes. Participants can choose from knitting or basket weaving. Class size is limited. The event is from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, May 2 at the OSU Extension Center, 4116 E. 15th St. in Tulsa. The cost is $10 per person and includes class supplies and lunch. To register, send a check payable to OHCE-TC with your class preference written in the memo line to OHCE-TC, 4312 East 67th Street, #565, Tulsa, OK, 74136.
