By Jillian Moore Joel and Kendra Wiland opened J. David Jewelry in Broken Arrow, OK, with just three rings and $500. Now, 20 years later, they own and operate that same store, as well as their newest location in south Tulsa. At just 15, Joel began his

career in the jewelry industry as an independent jeweler for corporate companies. His time and experience in the corporate world helped him learn that while he loved what he did, there were many things he intended to do differently in his own store. Joel wanted to offer a level of quality that shoppers wouldn’t find anywhere else. His unique corporate experience allowed him to discover an untapped area in the jewelry market. Like all
merchandise, jewelry is made to make a profit, and unfortunately, this means many pieces of jewelry can sometimes be of lesser quality. Luckily for J. David Jewelry shoppers, Joel decided this ideology was clearly not in people’s best interest. “When everything is mass produced to get it as cheap as it can possibly be, there are a lot of people who compete for that business. We don’t,” Joel said. “It comes back to the best quality they can get for their money. I love to say that we’ll never be the cheapest because to be the cheapest you have to be the worst. We get people the very best for the least.” Joel chooses to live by the philosophy, “It’s better to have one dollar from 100 people than $100 from one person”. His team chooses not to focus on the amount of money someone is willing to spend, but on ensuring they’re getting the best quality for their budget. This is one fundamental element that sets J. BEFORE YEAR’S END By Erica Ludwig Like most retailers, car dealerships everywhere push for those year-end deals. But what exactly makes the end of the year specials so different? Chad Jennings, General Manager of Green Country Mitsubishi in Bixby, says that it’s all about financing and inventory. “You know, everybody always wonders when the best time of month is to buy a car, but the time of year is easy because it’s always the end of the year,” he said. “Manufacturers are always pushing for their sales numbers by December 31, because they’re trying to close out the previous year’s models.” According to Chad, the financing on last year’s vehicles will be the best it’s been for the entire year. With dealers needing to make room for next year’s models, they don’t want to carry last year’s inventory into the New Year. “This really helps those who need a tax write off the for the end of the year, whether it be business or not. This is really the best time to do that,” he said. Another benefit of buying a car at year’s end is manufacturers are pushing for incentives, meaning the rebates on new models will be at their absolute highest. “Manufacturers and dealers don’t want a dip in sales as they sell out of the previous year models, so the rebate will be higher on the new models as well,” said Chad. “They’re trying to get ready for the year end change.” Values JANUARY DECEMBER 2016 ? 10| | VALUES 2017
Finally, Chad advises those in the market to get a new vehicle before the end of the year because dealers are willing to take less money in order to clear out their current inventory. With the usual push starting a week before Thanksgiving, the sooner customers get in, the better. “Dealers like myself, we’re trying to sell as many units as possible for that final, year end figure,” Chad said. “You know, there’s so much that goes into the advertising that manufacturers do to show year over year growth. Consumer spending is obviously up during the holidays with buying Christmas presents, so they have to be more aggressive with their approach, which is why they emphasize the high rebates. People also like to be the first with the newest model and this is the time of year to do that.” The dealership is committed to the original mission of community and service by providing quality products and services to their customers. recruiting supervisor at Choices for Life Foster Care, is often asked what it takes to become a therapeutic foster parent. In response to a school assignment to write an ad, a 10-year-old girl answers the question through the eyes of a foster child who was recently adopted. Through the eyes of a professional, Leslie adds, “patience, understanding and the willingness to ask for help to do what is best for a child in need.” Foster parents from all walks of life have answered the call and experienced some of the most difficult, yet rewarding, challenges in their lives. Choices for Life, with offices in Sapulpa, Ponca City, Checotah and Oklahoma City, focuses on children with a higher level of emotional and behavioral issues. Statewide, there are more than 130 children
All come with their own adversities through no fault of their own. Their issues range from extreme neglect to verbal and sexual abuse. Their special needs require special care that is not available through traditional foster channels. “Most of these kids have had unique and traumatic experiences far beyond their years,” says Leslie. “Imagine the feeling of a kid being picked up at school by state workers. The parents have been arrested. The child does not have a chance to say good-by to anyone, leaving school with strangers and only the clothes on his or her back.” Many times education is far distant because the focus is on simply surviving another day. Kids are rescued from bad situations, but do not recognize the danger, feeling as though they have no control over their lives. The sooner they are placed in therapeutic foster care, the sooner they can start rebuilding their lives. Each child is carefully evaluated and then matched with a strong and stable foster family who will nurture the child to heal, grow

and develop the interpersonal and behavioral skills to become a positive and accomplished adult. Foster parents must deal with emotions that sometimes seem to change by the minute. The training they receive, professional support, mentoring and continuing education assures them they are not alone in their journey. Help is just a phone call away every minute of every day. By Erica Ludwig Throughout history, stars have served as a symbol of hope. From shepherds in the field, to the ancient Greeks, to even Peter Pan finding his way back to Neverland, stars have always been there to offer comfort and light to those who need it. Tulsa’s rising star, Brian Nhira, captured the hearts of millions with his rendition of “Jesus Loves Me” on the 10th season of NBC’s Emmy awarding winning show, “The Voice”. With a contagious laugh, infectious smile and electric personality, it’s no question why he’s been recognized by notable names like Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine. Brian started singing in churches at just age four. By the time he reached high school, he had fallen in love with music, participating in show choir and musicals like “All Shook Up”. The Jenks graduate continued using his gift through college, where he was involved with ORU Live and singing for local churches. Tulsans watched the rest of America fall in love with Brian during his time on “The Voice” in the spring of 2016. true,” said Brian. “’The Voice’ was really my introduction to America, my introduction to this music industry, and everyone has to have one of those. It’s amazing to have the opportunity to be in the position that I’m in right now, to be building the way that we are. “ Since his time on the show, Brian has signed with Abrams Artist Agency in New York, looking to gain further experience in acting. Though his travels take him to the east and west coasts, the 24 year old looks forward to another Christmas in Tulsa, where he will be hosting his own, recently sold-out, Christmas concert at the Tulsa PAC. Patrons can expect the feelings of a winter wonderland at the Liddy Doenges Theatre. “This concert will feature a collection of the most popular pop Christmas tunes as well as some of the classics performed by ‘Voice’ alumni Brian Nhira (Season 10), Alaska and Madi (Season 6), Kristen Marie (Season 10), Chelsea Gann (Season 10), Malik Heard
(Season 10), and local talent Jesse Graver; in addition to Brian Nhira’s live band,” said Jasper Nhira, business director for Brian Nhira music. Part of the proceeds from this concert will go toward the collection of backpacks and school supplies for grade school children in Zimbabwe, Africa. Baby It’s Cold Outside! We are getting colder weather and of course ice or snow could be on the way. Here is some helpful advice for preventing common winter dangers that seniors face. Dress for warmth-- Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia. The CDC reports that over half of the hypothermia (body temperature dipping too low) related deaths are in people of over the age of 65. Dress in layers; wear warm socks, a warm hat, gloves, a scarf and a heavy coat. If the air is very cold cover your face with a scarf to protect your mouth and lungs. Avoid slipping on ice-Spots of ice on sidewalks
and stairs can cause anyone to slip and fall. Unfortunately older adults can face complications such as wrist and hip fractures, head trauma and major lacerations. Wear shoes with good traction and non skid soles. If you do go outside remove your shoes as soon as you return indoors since moisture can stick to the soles of your shoes and cause you to slip and fall inside. Prepare for power outages-- Here is a simple starter list of what to have on hand: flashlight with new batteries, 12 bottles of water, 6 candles, matches, non-perishable food items that can be eaten cold, and your medications.
Winter depression—Reach out and stay in touch with people you know are housebound when bad weather comes. Isolation and loneliness can happen when bad weather keeps you indoors. Make a list of your close neighbors phone numbers and call to say hello. For more information contact:
