We Do Driveways LCI Concrete celebrates ten years in business this year. By Sheryl Sowell
Spring is a popular time for remodeling and home improvement tasks. If you’re looking to boost your home’s appeal, think of what you first notice upon arrival at a house. Is it the kitchen? Bathroom? Garage? No – it’s the driveway! After years of winter snow, ice and corrosive salt covering the driveway, the concrete inevitably deteriorates and becomes pitted and flaked, transforming into a real eyesore. The deterioration gradually worsens
until it has a negative effect on your home’s visual appeal, and even its value. An old cracked driveway can not only be unsightly, but also dangerous. Kalan Paul, owner of LCI Concrete, offers a simple solution. Kalan and his team “do driveways.” Projects are completed in two to three days. With 20 years of experience, Kalan knows exactly what he is doing. He has been in business with LCI Concrete since 2005. “Concrete is durable, and when
the soil and concrete are properly prepared and poured, you can expect it to last at least 30 to 40 years,” he says. “Concrete is also environmentally friendly, as it is composed of renewable resources that can be recycled into granular fill or concrete aggregate.” LCI Concrete first lays 3/8-inch rebar on industry recommended two-foot grid (continued on page 24)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Riding the Bucking Bull 5 Steps to Overcoming Fear About The Market BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT
Well folks, I can surely say…This ain’t our first rodeo when it comes to the ups and downs of the stock market. It seems we have quite the perfect storm brewing here in Oklahoma. Between oil prices plunging, the stock market in correction, high Oklahoma jobless claims, and the extreme negativity of this election cycle, it has created a tornado of panic and fear. It feels as though folks are holding on for dear life. While fear is an understandable emotion, if you act irrationally during periods of stress, you will likely regret it. The current volatility is uncomfortable, but it is not unusual or unexpected. It is important to remain rational and disciplined. While we can’t control what happens in Washington, Wall Street, or Main Street, we can control how we prepare for and respond to the resulting gyrations. Thoughtful development of your goals, sound financial planning, disciplined investment management, and asking for professional help are
things you can control. The following are five steps to overcoming fear about the market: • Develop a clear goal about the money that you have invested. This should include what you will use the money for and when you will need it. If it is for retirement, look at how much income you may have coming from Social Security or other sources and solve for the difference. • Determine how much risk you are comfortable with. If you are unsure, Google “investment risk quiz” and see how you score. Most people think that they are fine with risk until the market declines and then suddenly they are not. • Establish an investment plan. Research at least 10 dif-

ferent investments. Evaluate their potential capital appreciation, dividends, and risk factors. Decide what investments you are going to buy. Make a decision about when and for what reasons you would both buy and sell this specific investment. • When the market gets rough, stay focused. Do not get emotional and change your plan midstream. If you decide to change your investments, ask yourself if your plan has changed or if you are just scared. • Ask for help from someone who knows what they are doing. It may be your best investment ever. For help riding the bucking bull, give us a call. We can help. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. Myths & Facts about Dental X-Rays Dr. Steven White clears up some common misconceptions about dental x-rays. By Dr. Steven White Does the thought of developing cancer or other health problems from dental x-rays stop you from going to the dentist? The rationale many people have is that because dental x-rays involve passing electromagnetic radiation through the jaw, the exposure could lead to skin burns, cancer, brain tumors and even birth defects. I’m here to tell you, this is not the case. The truth is…the amount of radiation given off during a dental x-ray is too small to cause any damage. And the information your dentist gleams from x-rays is well worth the scant amounts of radiation. I will discuss a few myths and facts about dental x-rays. Myth #1) Dental x-rays are particularly harmful because they are using radiation extremely close to the head and the brain. Actually, no matter what part of the body it is, the amount of radiation emitted by a dental x-ray is too tiny to cause any damage. You may wonder, if there’s no harm, why does the dentist leave the room? The dentist leaves the room because they do this all day long – yes, sitting for one x-ray session isn’t bad. But the dentist might do 10 of these in a day. That’s ten times the exposure you get, and then they do it day after day after day. Myth #2) Dental x-rays will affect the breast milk of pregnant
women. In fact, nursing mothers often undergo numerous tests including mammograms and other x-rays to determine if they are in a proper state of health. Having a dental x-ray is absolutely no different than any of these other tests. Fact # 1) The amount of radiation you are exposed to during a dental x-ray is less than that encountered with other types of xrays, as well as many everyday activities. Unlike conventional xrays on other parts of the body, dental x-rays are targeted to a small part of the body. This ultra-precise targeting (plus your lead apron) ensures that just a small part of the body receives the small dose of radiation. Using a millisievert (mSv) scale to measure doses, you could expect 0.038 from Bitewing x-rays, and 0.150 from a full mouth x-ray. In comparison, a lower gastrointestinal tract x-ray measures 4.060, while a chest x-ray is .080. Radiation from space in Denver, Colorado is 0.510 per year, and the average national radiation in the United States per year is 3.00. So essentially, you get about three and a half times the radiation from space (if you live in Denver) than you do from a full mouth x-ray. Radiation is also present in just about everything from one degree or another; even a banana has radiation! For example, cooking with natural gas and flying cross-country expose you to more radioactive materials than a dental x-ray. Fact #2) Current dental x-rays require one-fourth of the radiation of traditional dental x-rays. With the introduction of faster speed x-ray film, the amount of radiation needed for dental x-rays has decreased considerably, as well as the amount of time you are exposed to radiation. Digital x-rays have been around for awhile now, and are quite popular, although I will say that not all dentists use them because the equipment is quite expensive. But the advantages are profound. Amongst the benefits are: immediate viewing of the digital image, easy storage for comparison, the ability to enhance the image, better communication between dental practitioners (i.e. emailing images), and (ready for it?) lower radiation. In some cases, radiation is up to 80 percent lower! Fact #3) The diagnostic and treatment benefits of dental x-rays far outweigh any potential consequences. Dental x-rays are a valuable tool in helping dentists detect and treat oral health problems at an early stage. Many oral diseases can’t be detected by visual and physical examination alone. Dental x-rays can help diagnose early-stage cavities, gum diseases,
infections, and some types of tumors. At White Smile, we use digital x-rays in our office, which use even less radiation than traditional x-rays. I can’t do my job of detecting disease without this diagnostic tool. You wouldn’t refuse a chest x-ray or CT scan (far more radiation) if your M.D. suggested you need one. We take the minimum amount of x-rays and follow ADA guidelines in their use. The State Department of Health regularly tests all radiation producing machines and certifies their safety.

DDon’t Be Alarmed, Be Aware Mother Nature’s Pest Control addresses potential insect-related issues not to be ignored: Zika virus, termites, bedbugs, and fleas and ticks.
By Duane Blankenship common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Justin Buckmaster and Sheila Disler of Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care say there is no need for panic or alarm, but in concern for public health, we should be doing all we
can to keep mosquito populations at a minimum. Warmer weather is just around the corner, and winning battles against insects is Mother Nature’s expertise. Treatments are administered in and around our homes, gardens, shrubs and lawns, therefore diminishing the inherent numbers of mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, bedbugs and termites. The range and abundance of the Lone Star Tick have increased over the past 20 to 30 years, and they now reside in Oklahoma and Texas. According to Justin, Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care department managers include: Brent “All three Pressnall, pests; Tom Sevitts, lawn; David Grady, human resources; and (not pictured) life stages – Andrea Monks, office manager. Sheila Disler is communications larva, director, and Justin Buckmaster is marketing director for Mother Nature’s. nymph and
Most of us are becoming aware of the Zika virus disease, heretofore confined to Central and South America. The first case of Zika in the United States was recently reported from Dallas, Texas. The virus is spread to people through mosquito bites, and the most
adult – will feed on humans and may be aggressive. They also feast on dogs and cats and are often brought into our homes.” With our mild winter, Mother Nature’s major focus is now on disease-carrying insects. Shelia indicated that common pests are most active mid- to late-summer and mild winters generally indicate that we’ll see pests earlier, longer and in greater numbers. “This includes fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, bedbugs and termites,” she added. With spring break approaching and students on the move, Shelia reminds us of these tips to help reduce the risk of bedbugs in your home: Don’t put luggage on hotel or motel beds. Inspect rooms prior to moving in. The safest place for luggage is the bathtub; bedbugs hate porcelain and tile. When you return home, leave the luggage in the garage. Put clothes from luggage into the dryer and run a cycle on high setting. (Temperatures over 115 degrees will kill bedbugs.) After the dry cycle, wash clothes and do another dry cycle. Bedbugs love clutter; remove it. Don’t open packages you receive inside your home. The number one carrier of bedbugs is secondhand furniture. Contact Mother Nature’s for a treatment of FROSTBITE before
bringing furniture into home. “We predict a healthy swarm of termites this year,” said Shelia. “Colonies get overcrowded and send out swarms that include future queens and kings to ferret out places to form new colonies. Sentricon HD (High Density) Bait System is our best defense against termites.” Mother Nature’s also offers a full-service mosquito elimination plan where technicians check potential mosquito habitats around your home – gutters, French drains, pools, toys, shrubs, trees and lawn. You will be advised of a recommended treatment plan and its cost. Don’t panic. Be calm. But do all you can to reduce threats to you and your family brought on by little crawly things that live around us. Call Mother Nature’s, the experts in pest control. For more information, contact

Myers Thinks Outside the Pizza Box Mazzio’s names industry veteran Stuart Myers as its new vice president of marketing.
By Kristy White Tulsa-based Mazzio’s LLC, the owner and operator of Mazzio’s Italian Eatery and Oliveto Italian Bistro, has named Stuart Myers, an experienced restaurant industry veteran, as its new vice president of marketing. Myers has more than 25 years of experience in national restaurant marketing, including field/local store marketing, promotions, brand and product development. As vice president he will oversee the company’s daily marketing, advertising and PR efforts in both the corporate and franchise-owned locations. “We are thrilled that Stuart is joining us to lead our marketing team,” said Sheri Miksa, president and CEO of Mazzio’s. “As a career marketing executive, he has led marketing teams for a number of franchised restaurant chains, including major pizza brands. He brings fresh perspective, extensive industry experience and best-inclass marketing skills to help us continue to build our sales and grow our brands into the future.”
For the past 10 years, Myers owned and operated United Marketing Communications, an award-winning marketing and media agency in the Dallas area specializing in the pizza industry. His company received numerous awards, including Pizza Hut Agency of the Year in 2008 as well as being named Papa Murphy’s agency for new store openings in 2013. But one of the greatest strengths Myers brings to the Tulsa company, according to Mazzio’s, is his ability to think “outside the pizza box.” His wealth of knowledge has led him to increase sales and profits not only for pizza franchises like Domino’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza but also for leading regional and national restaurant franchisors/ brands that include Church’s Chicken, Dairy Queen, KFC, Long John Silver’s and Freddy’s Frozen Custard. “I’m very excited to be a part of the Mazzio’s team,” said Myers. “I’m eager to get settled in, involved with the community and become more familiar with
everything the Tulsa area has to offer.” Myers knows how important it is to be active in the community, and he has also taken that belief to the next level with his leadership in national industry organizations. He served as vice president of marketing for the International Pizza Hut Franchise Holder’s Association, as well as working with franchisees representing more than 4,200 domestic Pizza Hut locations in the development of system marketing initiatives, regional and local media programs, and sales-building initiatives. Most importantly, Myers said he understands the importance of Mazzio’s amazing history and loyal following. The corporation was founded in Tulsa by the late Ken Selby in 1961 and ownership remains in his family today. With nearly 140 restaurants now in nine states, Tulsa-based Mazzio’s LLC is the parent company of the Mazzio’s Italian Eatery and Oliveto Italian Bistro brands. Mazzio’s Italian Eatery’s 134

Sell Your Kids’ Outgrown Items The Just Between Friends Owasso sale will be April 13-16 at Friendship Baptist Church. The Broken Arrow sale will be April 1-3 at Rhema Ninowski Recreation Center.
By Sheryl Sowell You’ve probably seen the billboards and heard their commercials on the radio, but you may not know what the Just Between Friends sale is all about. Is it a buying club? Do you have to be a member? Where does the merchandise come from? Amber Post, who owns the Owasso, Broken Arrow, Jenks/Glenpool, and Lee’s Summit, Missouri franchises, is happy to explain. In 1997, a group of friends got together in Tulsa and formed Just Between Friends. These young mothers wanted to dress their children well and save money while offering their outgrown items for sale to others. The concept started in a living room, where they gathered to “shop” from each other’s surplus items. It quickly grew into the nationally franchised business it is today. The sales offer high-quality, gently-worn items for children and expectant mothers, and take place in large facilities around the country twice a year. The Owasso JBF Sale will be held April 13-16 at Friendship Baptist Church, located at 86th Street North and
145th East Avenue in Owasso. The Just Between Friends Broken Arrow sale will be held April 1-3 at Rhema Ninowski Recreation Center (on 71st Street just east of Aspen). Since the sales are next month, that gives families plenty of time to gather the extra clothes, toys and other items in their home and become consignors. A consignor is simply a mom (or dad) like you! If you can look around your house and see toys, clothes and equipment with lots of life left in them, it’s time to get involved with JBF and turn those outgrown items into money for your family. Visit www.owasso.jbfsale. com or www.ba.jbfsale.com for all the details on how to get signed up and tag those items. You set the price and earn 60 percent of the selling price (70 to 80 percent if you consign and volunteer). “No time to tag? We can do it for you – it’s called VIP tagging,” adds Amber. Checks are mailed to consignors a week after the sale, and volunteers receive their checks the day after the sale closes. JBF accepts clothing for infants up to size 14; shoes size
0 to 8; accessories such as hats, belts, hair bows, socks, gloves and mittens; maternity and new mommy gear; sports and outdoor equipment; toys; electronics such as gaming systems and computer games; crafts including art easels, jewelry-making kits and paint by numbers; books and board games; baby equipment such as car seats, strollers, bouncy seats and swings; furniture; nursery and children’s room décor and bedding; and other miscellaneous children’s items including diapers, kids’ towels, and sippy cups. JBF is the perfect opportunity to sell items you Amber Post, franchise owner of Just Between Friends in no longer need, and shop for Owasso, Jenks/Glenpool, Broken Arrow, and Lee’s Summit. clothes and kids’ items you will need for the future. “Those who volunteer get to shop first before organized into categories. The Function, Responsibility and Performance of the Tulsa County Assessor’s Office
Helpful information about our Tulsa County Assessor’s office. By Dora E. Finlayson
to the public? The Tulsa County Assessor’s Office of Ken Yazel clears up these common
questions. The Assessor values property for ad valorem tax purposes. Ad valorem means “according to value.” The Assessor’s Office does not set tax rates or collect taxes. Tax rates are set by the County Excise Board based on estimates of need presented to the board by the various school districts, cities, and other taxing jurisdictions. Property taxes are used, among other things, for schools, libraries, the health department, and to pay off bonds and legal judgments. Once the Assessor has valued the property and the Excise Board has set the tax rates, the County Treasurer is responsible for delivering tax invoices and collecting taxes. The Assessor’s Office also receives and processes applications for exemptions. These include the Homestead Exemption, Additional Homestead Exemption, Property Valuation Limitation (Senior Freeze), Veterans Tulsa County Assessor Ken Yazel was first elected by the Exemption, and Manufactured citizens of Tulsa County in 2002. He is a retired U.S. Marine Corps Major, having served as a radio operator, parachutist, Home Exemption. Mr. Yazel believes it is Vietnamese linguist, Nuclear Artillery Officer, Recruiting Officer, important that he and his staff and Financial Management Officer.
What exactly is a county assessor, and what are their responsibilities
be available in person to answer taxpayer questions, address concerns, and generally provide information about property valuation and ad valorem taxes. This is done through the Assessor’s Community Outreach Program, which is designed to give taxpayers an opportunity to learn about what the Assessor’s Office does and to provide a forum to answer questions and receive feedback. Mr. Yazel speaks to service clubs, professional organizations, homeowners associations, and various other groups throughout the year. His staff is available during the year to receive applications for exemptions at sub-offices located throughout Tulsa County and at various home shows and the state fair. Many people are unaware of the fact that county assessors in Oklahoma are regulated by the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC). Each assessor’s office is subject to an annual performance audit by the OTC, which scores that office on how accurate and how equalized their property valuations are, as well as how the office performs its statutory duties in general. Since the inception of the audit, the Tulsa County Assessor has scored at
or near the top of all counties in the state. And in 2015, the Tulsa County Assessor’s Office received a score of 100% (275 out of a possible 275 points). Mr. Yazel attributes much of this to his commitment to hiring competent and qualified people and providing the training necessary for them to perform their duties at a very high level. Citizens are invited to visit the Assessor’s website at assessor. tulsacounty.org and look up their property or the property of others for whom they have responsibility. There are tools available by which property owners can compare their property value to others in the same area. Plus there is information about exemptions and forms available online to make filing easier. If citizens have any questions about their property valuation, exemptions, appeals, or any other topic, they can call the Assessor’s Office at (918) 596-5100.

PPaying Too Much for Your Prescriptions? GenScripts Pharmacy is expanding its proven prescription cost reduction system from Tulsa and Broken Arrow to patients in Owasso.
By Duane Blankenship According to Mark Wright, owner of GenScripts Pharmacy, millions of consumers pay for their own prescriptions out of pocket, have high-deductible insurance, are affected by the Medicare Part D “donut hole,” or have expensive insurance co-pays for at least part of their prescriptions. If this is you, Mark invites you to contact
the new GenScripts Pharmacy in Owasso to see if they can provide you with an affordable solution to ease the financial pains of high prescription costs. After 47 years as a pharmacist, Mark felt changes could be made within his industry that would directly benefit the patient. He believed he could revolutionize
the pharmacy industry, and forged ahead to develop a simple plan. After much thought and deliberation, Wright came to the conclusion that patient care could be simplified if middlemen were eliminated and only the doctor, patient and pharmacist were included in the prescription process. His solution was to

effectively eliminate all redtape generated by third-party involvement – the insurance companies. After three years of preparation, GenScripts opened its first store in midtown Tulsa in 2006. The unique business model empowered doctors and put their patients at the center of the plan. Prices are kept competitive and affordable and, best of all, patients get well. “Our mission,” said Wright, “is to relieve the pain of high prescription prices by providing patients with quality prescriptions at affordable prices. We give patients personal counsel on how to save money, assist them in executing their doctor’s care plan, and we participate actively in their treatment and recovery.” GenScripts now has three locations: Owasso, Broken Arrow and Tulsa. The focus remains on delivering great value and savings on prescriptions to patrons. “When you visit a GenScripts Pharmacy, you’ll receive free advice, the highest quality pharmaceuticals, and benefit from our low prices that compete successfully with big-box discount pharmacies and large chain drug stores.” The continuing focus of GenScripts is to unleash free market principles that allow them to offer customers honest and transparent prices that are based on actual product costs – not what the insurance market dictates
prices should be. Mark advises that prescription prices vary greatly among pharmacies, often varying by 50% or more between pharmacies in the same city. In the United States, prices are not fixed or regulated, and hundreds of customers pay less at GenScripts than their insurance co-pay. If you are uninsured or have a high deductible plan, you may save 50% or more on certain prescriptions at GenScripts. GenScripts is a fully licensed pharmacy providing highestquality medicines at low prices. Call or visit the new store in Owasso for prices and learn why thousands of area residents have made GenScripts their pharmacy of choice. “We do more than just dispense medications,” said Wright. “We are pro-active in helping find ways to save you money. At GenScripts, you are our customer, not the insurance company.”

chewed down, brittleness and discoloration – unsightly nails can ruin your entire look. Quality is important in finding a manicurist. Stopping into a random nail salon can be risky. How experienced is the person doing your nails? Do you leave with pain under your nails, or cuts along your cuticles? Salons that don’t have high sanitary and cleaning standards can lead to infections and discomfort. Clients of Debbie Edmonds can rest assured this is not the case at Reveal Salon & Aesthetics. Debbie has 30+ years of experience as a nail technician, and many of her clients stayed with her since she began. She has been at Reveal for the past three years, and says her clients enjoy the pleasant, clean atmosphere of the salon. “Many of my new clients show surprise that their nails do not hurt after I give them a manicure or apply acrylic nails. It should not be a painful experience – it should be gentle and relaxing,” says Debbie. Reveal Salon’s goal is to maintain the highest standards of service, cleanliness and client satisfaction. manicures, pedicures, acrylic nails and Shellac. “Shellac is a popular option because it allows you to grow your natural nails, and it comes in a variety of colors. The polish stays on for two weeks without chipping.” Pedicures are always a big hit. Guys, don’t forget: pedicures are not just for the ladies! Pedicures are beneficial for everyone. They help improve your foot health by removing dirt and bacteria that can lead to foot problems, reduce stress, eliminate foot odor, prevent ingrown toenails, and make your feet look good. You shave, shower and cut your hair; why not take time for your feet as well? A few options Debbie offers with pedicures include top-quality Cuccio Naturalé scrubs, sugar scrubs, hot towels, and massage with lotion. If you want a truly relaxing experience, a pedicure is the way to go. In addition to Debbie’s practices of cleanliness and sanitation, her gentle hands, and the salon’s pleasant atmosphere, another benefit to becoming her client is that she truly takes the time to get to know you and develop a relationship. “I enjoy my work, and my clients become my friends. We talk about our lives, our work and our families,” she says. “I learn their preferences and what services they like. I also get to know my clients’ skin, and have even found skin cancer spots before and recommended seeing a doctor.” Nail services are not simply
Page 19 about looking good – they are important for the health of your hands and feet as well. Debbie and her husband Troy, who is a stylist at Reveal, have been married for 43 years. The couple has two children and five grandchildren. Debbie says many of her clients will schedule appointments to have their nails done, followed up by a haircut from Troy. Nicole McGinnis, salon owner and licensed aesthetician, provides a variety of skin care services at Reveal, including solutions for anti-aging and adult acne, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, custom corrective facials, and OxyGeneo, a breakthrough anti-aging treatment that oxygenates skin from within while exfoliating and infusing it with potent regenerating nutrients. The Reveal team also includes four other stylists and a master barber. The salon was voted Best in the World by Tulsa World Weekend readers in 2014 and 2015.

NNever Let Your Fear Decide Your Future Waterstone Private Wealth Management helps clients create confidence in their dreams for their future.
By Melanie Hasty-Grant With the markets making a turn for the worst since January, the smell of fear is in the air. Not only is it in “the air,” you can sense it in the hearts of investors. F-EA-R has two meanings. Forget everything and run, or face everything and rise. The choice is yours. I hope you decide to face your fear and rise. So what does facing the fears of the market mean, exactly? A lot of folks have been rocking along over the last couple of years, maybe making little headway here or there but knowing deep down they don’t really have an investment or retirement “plan” in place. It’s something people find easy to put off. Some may have visited an investment person one time, who put them in some investments but have not received any further advice or service. Some may have left their 401(k)’s at old company plans or moved them to an online “do-it-yourself” outfit in an attempt to save money. At any rate, when triple digit losses start occurring, the fear sets in. However, then the excuse becomes that they “don’t want to move anything right now because the market is down.” Folks become literally paralyzed by their fear. So…the following is what I mean by facing your fears of the
market. 1) The “market” could care less what you paid when you purchased something. Therefore, if you really don’t have a sell-side strategy, meaning a pre-planned decision about when and why you or your advisor would sell a specific investment, then you really don’t have an investment plan. You should get one! Riding this market up and down and hoping for the best is not a plan. 2) If you do have an investment plan, stick with it! If you already have a well thought out plan about when you would sell or buy specific investments (or have someone who knows what they are doing, who does) then by all means don’t try to change things mid-stream, stick with the one who brought ya! 3) Be actively involved in your plan for your future. Too many times we develop an investment and retirement plan for someone and after a period of time they become apathetic or passive. By this I mean they stop coming to their portfolio review meetings, stop trying to reduce their debt, stop making their contributions to meet their goals. They stop working the plan that they committed themselves to. While we realize that the day-to-day tyranny of investing and plugging away at a future goal isn’t always
necessarily sexy, it is necessary to reach your destination. Don’t get distracted. Don’t let the day to day ups and downs sway you from
what you want for your life in the long term. Finally, remember that while the current market situation
may be uncomfortable, it is not unexpected or unusual. Be opportunistic at times like this. As with most all circumstances in life, it is really not about what is going on in the market, it is about the decisions your make about what to do about it. Fear can be a catalyst for change. Embrace what it is telling you. You are in control of your choices. If you need help evaluating your investments or developing a plan, give us a call. We can help. ASK MELLA AT MY CHOICE
How to Choose a Caregiver According to the Institute for Health & Aging at the University of California, over 41 million Americans have a chronic health condition that limits their daily activities in some way, and 12 million are unable to live independently. For those who have attained age of 85, more than half are impaired and need longterm care – that is, the personal assistance that enables them to perform daily routines such as eating, bathing, and dressing. Most people want to continue to live in their own homes for as long as possible. For those who are elderly and have disabilities, that may be possible only with outside help. Choosing a caregiver for a senior loved one is one of the most important decisions you can make. 1. Make sure the person you choose has a reputable background and has the experience you need. When you use an agency such as My Choice, you can be assured that the caregiver who comes to your home has been background checked, fingerprinted, their driving record checked, and have a current clear TB test. Caregiving agencies in Oklahoma are licensed through the state and must carry insurance and an employee bond. 2. The caregiver should have qualified training. Caregiver agencies require ongoing training courses for their employees. It is important that the caregiver
understand your specific needs and has knowledge about your health issues. Some caregiver training indicates advanced levels of knowledge. Certified Nurse Assistant, Home Health Care Aide, Personal Care Assistant and Certified Companion Caregiver are programs that train caregivers. 3. Hiring an independent caregiver on your own can be overwhelming. You will need to do a background check and pay all payroll taxes for the wages a caregiver earns working for you. Also remember to call all their references! 4. If you decide you need some assistance, first, make a list of what you want done. Is it personal care, help with grooming or dressing? Do you want meals prepared and light housekeeping? Do you need transportation during the caregiving time to appointments or for errands? Is there a pet in your home? 5. After deciding how much help you want, take a moment to define what characteristics you would want in a caregiver. Should they be outgoing? Should they be religious? A great cook? Someone who could be your friend? 6. Are you choosing a caregiver for someone with dementia? The caregiver should have basic knowledge of techniques to help with the issues that can come with this disease. Caregivers can also help you

Starting in January, VIM 360 began hosting monthly “Cabinet Cuisine” cooking workshops, taught by Miriam Brooks, RN, BSN and Certified Wellness Coach. strengthofmindandbody.com. With this being their third (and final) move since opening five years ago, Teresa decided it was time for their name to change as well. Her husband, Dr. Jeff McIlroy, owns Strength of Mind Behavioral Clinic. When the fitness studio first opened, it was on campus with the clinic, so it made sense to share a namesake. As Teresa and her team moved locations and solidified their own business identity, the name got a little confusing. “We discussed a lot of name ideas, and the word ‘vim’ kept coming up. I didn’t feel confident about any of the names we thought of. I was anxious and worried, and I needed to find an answer, so I said a prayer. Soon after, I was looking in the dictionary for ideas and looked up the word ‘life’ – our studio emphasizes how true living involves the ability to move and function with ease. The entry showed the phrase ‘vim and vigor.’ I looked up the word ‘vim,’ which was defined as ‘strength of the body and/or mind,’ and I knew it was meant to be. We focus on wellness for the whole mind, body and spirit of a person – all 360 degrees – and VIM 360 was born.” For more information, contact

Making Ideas Happen
Outdoor Creations specializes in professional styled indoor and outdoor living.
By Duane Blankenship Jake Nicks established Outdoor Creations three years ago. He and his team of experts consider the outside of your home just as important as its interior. Outdoor Creations provides products and services that include large pool houses, hardscaping, roofing, French drains, and Jake’s favorite, complete backyard renovations
for outdoor living at its finest. Outdoor Creations also builds quality homes, remodels condos and apartments, and flips homes. Jake spent his youth in Las Vegas, where his father was a construction project manager. Jake grew up working with his father and eventually came to Broken Arrow to attend Rhema Bible Col-

lege. Upon graduation, he began doing what he had enjoyed all his life, construction and remodeling. Jake soon found that customers were asking him to do a variety of projects and decided that starting his own business was a natural progression. Jake and the Outdoor Creations team provide a full range of superior services at competitive rates to residents of greater Tulsa and beyond. “Our company has grown from a two-person operation to a full staff of professionals that are able to meet your every landscaping and remodeling need,” says Jake. “By remaining consistently dedicated to performing at the highest standards, we continue to build long-term relationships with our clients.” The team’s reputation for customer satisfaction has made Outdoor Creations a household name in their industry. All of Jake’s employees are background checked, and the company is fully insured. Outdoor Creations has a perfect rating with BBB and Angie’s List. “We don’t farm out projects to independent contractors, and our customers are assured they will receive the highest standard of products and services whenever they hire us to do a project.” Although Outdoor Creations does not perform plumbing or electrical require-
ments, Jake recommends companies specializing in these areas whenever they are needed on a project. This is explained at the onset of a project, and you will be invoiced directly by the company doing the service. When you’re ready to begin remodeling or expanding your outdoor living experience, the Outdoor Creations team will consult with you to determine your exact needs for improving your home’s living space, whether inside or outside. You’ll be provided expert advice, creative ideas and an estimate to complete the project. When the job is finished and meets or exceeds your expectations, you’ll pay the amount agreed upon – never more than the amount presented in the estimate. If you’re thinking of making an idea happen – a pool, patio, pergola, fireplace or fire pit – Outdoor Creations will visit with you and present a free, three-dimensional design for you to consider for your backyard.
Jake loves to please customers and says, “There’s nothing I enjoy more than presenting a finished product. It’s very important to me that I consistently do my best to deliver the highest standards on every job, for every person. It’s very rewarding when we deliver a finished project that exceeds our customer’s expectations.”

Soil Smart Partners is a startup company designed to provide individuals and landscaping companies with a source of quality materials as well as a place to dispose of leaves and grass clippings. Hansen explained that there will be two divisions of Soil Smart: a materials division that will serve contractors with fill dirt and topsoil, and a compost division to serve landscape specialists and gardeners. “In short,” said Hansen, “we have the dirt.” Owners of Soil Smart Partners include Wes and Kristen Hedges, Michael Hansen, and Eric and Kristin Hansen and are Don’s grandchildren. The partners represent all the local schools (OSU, OU, TU and ORU) and have a wide spectrum of degrees from plant and soil sciences, engineering, microbiology and nursing, but they all want to minimize green landfill and make the
world a little better than they found it. Soil Smart can customize each order to meet specific needs after NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) testing your soil to determine its content. According to Don, “You wouldn’t want to use the same compost on your azaleas as you do on your tomatoes.” In addition to their standard compost blends, Soil Smart is able to enrich your material with pine bark, cotton burrs, pecan shells, vegetable compost, cow manure, gypsum, limestone and sulfur. They can blend topsoil from the Verdigris River Valley with Arkansas River sand for the perfect sandy loam. “We need your leaves. We are set up to accept leaves and grass clippings free of charge, and we can take limbs and branches in a separate area,” said Don. Drive to Soil Smart Partners in Broken Arrow by heading east of town on 71st Street (Kenosha) to 353rd E. Avenue (Lone Star Road). Turn north to the Soil Smart distribution area. Don invites you to

RRun to the Well Kibo Group International will host the second annual 5K and Fun Run, dedicated to bringing clean water to Uganda, on April 9, 2016.
By Julie Alexander Most of us give little thought to where our water comes from when we turn on a faucet, but in countries like Uganda, potable water is at a premium. When a group of missionaries from Searcy, Arkansas visited the country in 1994, they quickly discovered how important water is to communities and to their own mission. Greg Taylor, a minister at The Journey Church in Tulsa, was a member of the mission group that went in 1994. He said their initial work was to spread their religious message to the residents they met.
But after several years, they realized how big of a problem unsanitary water was for the community and the message they brought. And the mission grew into something that saved lives in more ways than one. “Our mission immerses, so when we baptized some people in polluted water sources, it convicted us that we need to also address the physical needs of clean drinking water for people, as well as addressing spiritual needs.” That trip more than 20 years ago led to the creation of Kibo Group International, which is
(L to R): Greg Taylor, minister, The Journey Church; Teresa McIlroy, owner, VIM 360; Ben West, communication coordinator, Kibo Group International; and Mary-Margaret Watson, runner and Kibo supporter.
dedicated to bringing clean water to Uganda through the construction and maintenance of water wells. The Kibo Group’s mission goes well beyond just clean water. They see clean water as the key to creating flourishing, healthy communities. Kibo provides funding for well projects, and teaches the locals how to build and maintain the wells, giving residents independence, stability and better health. Ben West, Kibo Group’s communication coordinator, said they fund four to five new wells each year at a cost of ten to fifteen thousand dollars per well. Kibo also helps to repair 15 to 20 wells per year. Training local residents how to maintain the wells is also important. “Repairing a well is sometimes a couple of hundred dollars up to a few thousand,” he said, adding that not all the funding comes directly from Kibo. “The communities help pay for the repairs. They might raise a thousand dollars to help pay for the repair. “ Most of Kibo’s funding is from individual donors from across the United States. But the group is gearing up for their two biggest fundraisers on April 9: the Run to the Well, a 5K and Fun Run, and The Kibo Group Partnership Dinner. Run to the Well was the
brainchild of Mary-Margaret Watson, an avid runner and Kibo supporter. “Uganda is near and dear to my heart,” she said. “Even though our feet are planted in Tulsa, we can make a difference around the world.” Watson said she was told by other 5K organizers that they should be happy if they break even the first year, but Run to the Well raised approximately $14,000 in 2015, and Watson’s goal is to raise $25,000 this year. They are expecting 400 participants this year. Teresa McIlroy, owner of VIM 360, formerly Strength of Mind & Body, is a race sponsor for the second year and will be having training sessions leading up to the event. She learned about Kibo from Taylor. She and her husband, Jeff, have visited Uganda twice and witnessed first-hand the difference Kibo’s work has made. “We were impressed with the way Kibo hires and empowers Ugandans to do the mission work,” she said. “Who better to serve Ugandans than Ugandans who know first hand the culture and needs?” McIlroy is also forming a team to participate in the run and encourages people to join her team or form their own. Sponsorships are available and range in price from $500 to $2,500. The course is USATF certified and runners are chipped and timed. The 5K and the Fun Run are open to all ages and ability levels. Participants will also find an interactive Ugandan village with a working well at the finish line. The Fun Run starts at 8 a.m. and the 5K at 8:30 at the River Walk Crossing in Jenks. tion is available at www.eventbrite.com and ends April 7. For non-runners, Kibo is holding its third annual Kibo Group Partnership Dinner the same evening. Featured guests include Jim White, the winningest cross country coach in the country who was featured in the Disney movie “McFarland USA,” and Duncan Ojiambo and Lazarus Wogoli from Uganda will speak about the accomplishments of Kibo in their communities. The dinner is from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel and Convention Center. Sponsorships are available.

Superhero Challenge
The Child Abuse Network’s 3rd annual fundraiser is set for Sunday, April 3.
By Duane Blankenship
Although every child deserves to grow up in a safe, supportive home, we are all frighteningly aware that child abuse happens every day. The Child Abuse Network (CAN) is currently seeing 50 kids per week from new allegations of abuse. CAN professionals and volunteers believe there is hope for every child. Staff members work with each child, one at a time, to ease the pain, stop the hurt and begin the healing process. In 2014, nearly 11,000 children residing in Tulsa County were subjects of child abuse investigations or assessments. That’s 1 of every 14 children in the county, and the numbers continue to grow. Child abuse investigations pose unneeded stress and trauma to the children involved. CAN works with each child during initial stages of investigation by addressing their basic need for a safe environment. Children receive collaborative intervention services including interviews, medical exams, case reviews and mental health consultations, all done in one place with one
team. Every child is heard, respected, and goes through this process only once. Ashley Neal and Mary Ann Cameron are co-chairs of the 2016 Superhero Challenge. This fun-filled family event is a fundraiser with proceeds supporting services provided by CAN. Ashley and Mary Ann have announced that Sunday, April 3 is the 2016 event date, and it will be held at POSTOAK Lodge & Retreat located west of downtown Tulsa, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event provides fun, food and entertainment for the entire family, and everyone is encouraged to dress as a superhero. Registrations must be made by March 4 to guarantee receipt of an event T-shirt. Registration will close by March 22, but register as early as possible because the Superhero Challenge is expected to sell out early. For convenience, register online and stop by the center for early packet pick up. This year’s event features the Sidekick Challenge for kids and the Superhero Challenge
