s Elizabeth Taylor once said, “Jewelry has the power to be the one little thing that makes you feel unique.” J. David Jewelry, located in Broken Arrow and South Tulsa, is anxious to help you find or create a sentimental piece of jewelry sure to be treasured for years to come.

Owned by Joel and Kendra Wiland, J. David has been one of the Tulsa area’s top choices for all of its jewelry needs for the last 25 plus years. “We opened our first store with only three rings and

Twice a year, Joel travels to the diamond-trading capital of the world, Antwerp, Belgium, to hand-select diamonds that will be used to create one-of-a-kind pieces for his customers.

This year, Israel will be added to the list for the process of finding the perfect gems.

“Like snowflakes, no two diamonds are alike,” explains Landon. Joel goes directly to the source rather than buying more expensive gems in bulk.

“One of the benefits of shopping with us is that we treat each customer like a member of our family,” says Landon, adding that their attention to personal service and finding customers the best value is what often sets them apart from other jewelers.

J. David. As soon as you enter the store, you are greeted by a jewelry expert, ready to help. “One of our most popular services is custom jewelry design,” explains Landon. While many stores offer the same service, J. David invested in technology early on, which makes the entire process painless. You can either start the design process on their website or visit the store to work with a designer to create your one-ofa-kind piece. Once it’s designed on the computer, a 3-D printer is used to produce the custom piece for review.

“It’s a very detailed replica, down to 1/1000 of an inch that allows customers to see every detail of their design,” says Landon, adding that process can take anywhere from two to five weeks.

Landon goes on to explain that being a jewelry designer is much like being a miniature architect.

“Everything not only has to look good but has to be structurally sound so that it will stand the test of time.”

Most of J. David’s customers initially come in for their first real jewelry purchase, often an engagement ring. After working with the staff and seeing the attention to detail and care that goes into each client relationship, customers often return for those life events when jewelry makes the perfect statement.

Besides custom jewelry, J. David has many pieces ready to be purchased for those last-minute gifts. Good advice for Cupid, shop early as Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. They also do jewelry repair (regardless of where it was purchased), battery replacements and appraisals, all without ever leaving the store.

is a gift to match. One of the more popular gifts is one that Landon created when he was only 11 years old – their own line of candles. Landon explains that he went through the family change jar and divided the money equally among the family. His dad decided to make it a teaching moment and taught Landon about investment and creativity. Landon originally wanted to put a diamond at the bottom of each candle, but eventually came up with the current version where each candle has a gemstone melted right in the candle wax. Several have a half-carat diamond. The candles are $40 and profits go to The Little Lighthouse, a Tulsa-based school for kids with special needs.

Jim Halsey is a legendary music impresario. His career has spanned over 60 years. He set music industry standards in the area of music management, entertainment and education. BROKEN ARROW ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION

ity Manager Michael Spurgeon selected Ethan Edwards to lead the City’s Engineering and Construction Department beginning in early February. Edwards joins the City from Cowan Group Engineering, LLC, where he has been the operations manager since 2017.

Following a comprehensive nationwide search, Ethan Edwards has been selected to serve as the new Director of Engineering and Construction for the City of Broken Arrow. “I am truly honored to be selected as the Director of Engineering and Construction for the City of Broken Arrow,” Edwards said. “I understand the importance of this position, and I am looking forward to working alongside City personnel to proudly serve the residents of Broken Arrow by improving infrastructure and quality of life.”

Edwards joins the City from Cowan Group Engineering, LLC, where he has been the operations manager since 2017. Prior to Cowan, he spent nine years as the Water and Wastewater Division Manager, Principal, and Tulsa Office Lead at Professional

Engineering Consultants.

“I am beyond excited to have Ethan Edwards join the City’s leadership team,” said City Manager Michael Spurgeon. “BA is a fast-growing community with an abundance of capital and infrastructure projects that we need to complete. Between the 2018 GO Bond Package and Utility capital reinvestment plan, we have over $300 million of work to be done over the next eight years.

Whether it’s road widening, street and sidewalk repairs, water and wastewater improvements, parks work or building new buildings; our city needs a leader that has the experience and intangibles to keep up with these demands. I believe Ethan is the right person to lead our Engineering and Construction Department.”

Edwards has a wealth of experience managing infrastructure projects, especially water and wastewater, which will be important as the City of Broken Arrow continues work on over $27.5 million in Utility-related capital improvements currently underway. He has successfully completed numerous projects

throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas.

A graduate of Oklahoma State University, Edwards holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He is a member of the Water Environment Foundation and the Oklahoma Water Environment Association.

He starts work in Broken Arrow in early February and will lead the department’s four divisions: Construction, Engineering, Planning and Stormwater. The Engineering and Construction Department is responsible for the design and construction of all public infrastructure in the City, including roadways, bridges, water and sewer, stormwater, parks, public buildings and public safety (Police and Fire) projects, as well as floodplain management and securing grants and other alternative funding for many infrastructure projects.

A Winter Italian Holiday

’m often asked my favorite country to visit. Of the 51 countries I’ve visited, I can’t help but answer “Italy.” I’ve traveled there 16 times, and there’s just something about it that keeps me coming back. Of all the times I’ve visited, my trip last February was one of the best. Sure, it’s nice to go in October during the grape and olive harvest, but the crowds of tourists drive me insane.

My best friend, Rachael, lives in England and we travel together at least once a year. Although we had already met in Italy on previous trips, last year we decided to go to Italy in February. We packed our coats and scarves (Rachael had more scarves because she’s from cold England). We spent several days in Rome, which is definitely my favorite city in the world. The lack of tourists was startling. Instead of walking the streets trying to avoid running into people, we were able to look all-around, taking in the incredible architecture and scenes of everyday life in the ancient city. Even the Trevi Fountain was nearly deserted when we visited one morning after our cappuccino and maritozzo, the traditional Roman breakfast pastry.

Rachael and I took the train from Rome to Cortona, which is in Tuscany, high on a hill overlooking vineyards and rivers.

The Cortona Resort didn’t know what they had coming when we arrived. We befriended everyone who worked there and soon had them catering to our every hungry need. (I didn’t mention that when Rachael and I travel, we try to taste every local dish and drink, explaining that it’s all for the purpose of “research.”) The chef was soon preparing his special pasta dishes that he knew we would love. And, of course, we did.

Every afternoon when we arrived in our room we had pastries waiting for us.

Each day, we traveled to surrounding cities in Tuscany, where we found local wine bars, pizzerias and ceramic shops. I had been to Siena and San Gimignano numerous times during the high seasons for tourists, and I was thrilled on this occasion to be nearly the only one. We took a cooking class in Cortona from Chef Ryan in his 200-year-old house, making fresh pasta and grilled Tuscan steaks with the wine he got from his neighbor’s vineyard.

My friend, Antonella, met us in Montepulciano, where she took us to an olive oil farm to teach us how to taste olive oil properly. The wife of the olive farmer prepared lunch with fresh bread and soup she had made that morning. We sat on her veranda looking over the valleys of Tuscany that were still green despite the wintery weather.

The chill in the air was startling since I had previously experienced Tuscany during much warmer

months.

I returned to Italy later last year during the busiest tourist season. I couldn’t help but recall the deserted streets and empty cafes I had experienced in February. Since that visit, I’ve told everyone I know that they should plan their Italian getaway for Valentine’s Day. It may take a bit more luggage if you pack extra scarves, but it’s worth it in every other way.

The first time I went to Tuscany, I learned to make this lemon pasta that is one of my favorite dishes of all time. And it’s perfect to make for Valentine’s Day, even if you’re stuck in Oklahoma.

Spaghetti with Lemon, Basil and Cream Sauce Serves 8 I first had this pasta dish at a little hotel and winery in Castellina in Chianti, Italy.

The chef generously shared his recipe with me and told me he often throws in a splash of limoncello, which I also do. I later learned that this dish is commonly made in southern Italy, where lemons are abundant.

It’s an easy recipe to make, and great for feeding a crowd. Make the sauce ahead of time, then reheat it to pour over hot pasta.

1 lb. spaghetti pasta 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tbsp. butter 1 lemon, zested and juiced

2 cups heavy cream 20 basil leaves, chopped 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated Salt and pepper

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan. Add garlic and cook for one minute. Add the lemon zest, juice, cream, and half of the basil leaves. Simmer, uncovered for about 30 minutes, or until reduced to half. (This may take less time) Heat a large pan of water to a boil. Add a generous amount of salt to season the water. Add the pasta and cook according to package instructions. Drain and add pasta to the cream mixture. Stir in Parmesan and remaining basil. Add salt to taste. Serve immediately.

There are many inventive ways to say, “I love you.” Many of these ideas are sure to be budget-friendly or even no cost, but the bonus points earned from a partner is a definite plus.

Aeration is an often-overlooked process with lawn care. ost people are less than enthusiastic when it comes to property taxes, but your County Assessor, John A. Wright, believes that all citizens benefit by understanding the function, responsibility, and performance of the Tulsa County Assessor’s Office, and how they work for you.

The Office of the County Assessor is responsible for placing a Fair Cash (Market) Value on property, and the

valuation process begins Jan. 1 each year. Oklahoma property taxes are “ad valorem,” in Latin meaning “as to value.” Unless a federal or state law provides an exemption, all property in the State of Oklahoma is taxable.

Once the value is established, an assessment is converted, which is a primary component in computing real property tax liability. It is not the jurisdiction or responsibility of the Assessor for jurisdiction budgets or tax

rates. “Our job is the valuation of property,” said Mr. Wright. “In order for there to be a sense of support for this process, we are completely transparent in that we’ve been thorough, we’ve been fair, our personnel have been well trained, and we’ve applied the rules equitably.”

The formal appeal is separated from the County Assessor’s Office to assure the property owner that they are getting a fair and independent review. If the notice of property value has been received, the owner will have 30 days to appeal.

Additionally, during the tax season, homeowners will want to be aware of any exemptions that they might be eligible for.

The most common of these is the Homestead Exemption.

This exemption is available as long as an owner lives in

and retains ownership of the property. Exemptions can provide substantial savings for property owners, and the County Assessor’s Office is eager to help its citizens in meeting these goals.

“Personally, I think we should have the lowest tax burden we can possibly have,” said Mr. Wright, “but I understand the impact we make as property owners. We are all making these investments that actually support everybody’s property values.”

The County Assessor’s website at www.assessor.tulsacounty.org provides a wealth of information and resources to assist property owners in exploring how their taxes are used, including a comprehensive Ad Valorem Property Tax Fiscal Year report.

“The property taxes stay very much with local services,” Mr. Wright said. “It’s set up that way so people can see the fruits of their dollars at work.” Property

taxes are calculated based on local millage rates, which are approved by voters, legislature and the constitution. Funds from millage rates are principally allocated to schools, with some allowances for career tech, community college, Health Department and libraries.

Above all, the Tulsa County Assessor’s Office and John Wright are working to ensure that property owners are wellinformed and provided with fair and equitable tax resources. “We have an excellent staff to execute these functions on behalf of the taxpayers,” he said.

Many can find all they’re looking for at the annual Claremore Home & Garden Show, with vendor applications now being accepted.

“We’re wanting to let vendors and exhibitors everywhere know that we’re now accepting applications for the 2020 Home & Garden Show,” said Tanya Andrews, executive director, Claremore Expo and Visit Claremore. “The show itself is an opportunity for us to showcase many of our local and regional retail, commercial and industrial partners.

With ample but limited space, Stocker encouraged potential vendors to submit their applications early, if possible, with varying spaces available in Expo Hall to accommodate a variety of vendor’s needs. All booth rentals include an 8’ table, two chairs, 3’ side drapes, exhibitor badges and an electric hook up.

pring break is on the horizon, the kids will be out of school, and the boss has granted a few days off. The itch to travel has hit, but where can a fugitive from daily doldrums go on a tank of gas? Extended vacations have their place, but sometimes circumstances align for a day trip. Perhaps time is limited, or maybe the budget is.

For some, just a day away is what is necessary for a renewed perspective on everyday life.

Recently retired hairstylist Lisa McCool is enjoying her free time and ability to travel.

“I never have to go very far,” McCool said. “I truly love day trips.

Oklahoma and the surrounding area have quite a few surprises most any traveler may not expect. Take Springfield, Missouri for example.
