Trust the Man in the Black Hat BY MACY GOODNIGHT

T

he iconic look of Black Hat Cleaning Services, Inc. has become synonymous with honesty, integrity and unsurpassed professionalism. When you see the hat, you know you’re getting the absolute best in chimney, air duct and dryer vent cleaning. In 1977, owner and founder, David Harris, Sr. started his chimney sweep business in a time when healthy living in the home was gaining traction. In 1983, he bought the first air duct cleaning truck in Oklahoma and began providing the best service in its class. By the following year, they incorporated dryer vent cleaning. Over the years, his company has evolved into a trusted name in the business. “It’s amazing in this industry to have this kind of longevity,” he said. “Everywhere I go, I wear my hat. I always wanted everyone to recognize my company with my top hat.” The services provided by Black Hat encompass comprehensive safety and overall health in the home. Chimney sweep services as well as dryer duct cleaning, are essential for fire prevention, and air duct cleaning is vital for the air quality inside the home, ensuring a healthy breathing environment. David offers

constructive advice with service to assist in cost savings for energy usage and can even result in less frequency in required cleaning service. “Air duct cleaning times depend on how often you change your filters, what kind of filter you’re using, and their placement,” he said. “If you’re using the right filters and keeping those fresh, you’ll actually have a less frequent need for professional cleaning service.” On average, air duct cleaning is standard once a year for those using less quality fiberglass filters. Fire burning chimneys are recommended to be cleaned depending on wood-burning capacity, with a standard recommendation of professional sweep every 3 to 4 ricks of wood burned. Gas burning fireplaces only need cleaned every 15 to 20 years. “If you’re not sure if your chimney needs cleaning, at least have it inspected,” David said. “If you’ve

never had it cleaned, clean it!” With cooler weather coming soon, fireplaces will likely see more use, but most people spend more time indoors as a result of colder temperatures. The air quality within the home should be clean, without dust and particles blowing around in the air that is breathed. Dryer duct cleaning is sometimes overlooked by homeowners but should be a top priority regarding fire safety. Many home fires are caused every year by the lint that gets trapped within the pipes and once ignited can quickly burn throughout a home. “Dryer lint is the best thing you can use to start a campfire,” said David. “It is highly flammable. You don’t want that trapped in your wall as a fire hazard.” David’s sound advice for homeowners is only a small part of the comprehensive service provided by Black Hat. Honesty

and integrity are at the forefront of his business practice and what his customers see when they see him in his top hat. “My customers know that they can trust me to be honest, and take care of them, give them peace of mind.” Over the years, just as David’s hat has gotten taller, the services have evolved to become more efficient, time-saving and thorough. “I was one of the first people in this business to clean a chimney from the bottom up, and it was a quicker, cleaner, and safer cleaning process then,” he said. Chimney cleaning can take up to 45 minutes. David loves his work and the people he serves. “This is my 42nd year in business, and many more years ahead.”

SUPPORTING THE PULSE OF THE COMMUNITY AT THE HEART OF BROKEN ARROW ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL

BY MACY GOODNIGHT

S

ince 1980, the Broken Arrow Main Street Merchants Association has been deeply rooted in the growth and prosperity of a rapidly evolving downtown district, while working diligently to ensure the beat goes on. The Annual Heart of Broken Arrow Arts and Craft Festival is a great part of that effort, providing support for their mission and growing stronger every year. The annual festival will be hosted at the Broken Arrow Central Park Community Center Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry to the event is free, and everyone is welcome. Approximately 100 vendors will be found with unique and incredible arts and crafts to shop at this one-of-a-kind market. Association President and Committee Chair, Laurann Farris, takes pride in the incredible, handmade wares that are available each year. “We have so many unique and intriguing items,” she said. “Christmas is coming, and our show is close!” In its 26th year, The Heart of Broken Arrow festival will have some returning vendors from previous years, and many new ones with room to grow. Anyone interested in becoming a vendor is invited to call and reserve one of the especially large booth spaces, that are usually around 12ftx12ft. “Most people appreciate the bigger booth space,” said Laurann. “They can

accommodate the tables so much better.” Some of the vendors already included this year will display beautiful stained glass, incredible metal art, exquisite quilts, jewelry, lawn décor, succulents, bird feeders and houses, cutting boards and so much more! New to this year’s event will be on-demand screen printing. Handcrafted wood

They additionally extend funds to local nonprofits and organizations in need, such as Blue Star Mothers. Funds also ensure the continuation of other events throughout the year, as well as providing lights for members’ storefronts and banners for the Main Street light posts. The Main Street Association has always been charged with supporting business and community in the downtown district. “There are new people coming to Broken Arrow all the time,” said Laurann. “We want to make sure that BA stays on the map.” The festival is handicapped accessible, and lots of parking is available. Blending Into Fall BY SHANNON SMITH

W

e are nearing that time of year when soup is the perfect medicine for the soul. The weather is cool and crisp, so what better thing to make for dinner than a hearty soup? There are many options and varieties of soups, but one of the

14 |

easiest is what I call Blender Soup. To the bowl of a blender, you just add cooked vegetables, broth, some aromatics, and blend until smooth. I like to dress it up with fresh herbs or nuts, but it’s really important to choose fresh vegetables. My favorite way to cook vegetables is by bathing them in olive oil, salt, and pepper, and roasting them in a hot oven for 30-40 minutes. Cook them long enough to get a little color, which just adds more flavor. This is where you can get creative, and make your own custom “blends”. My personal favorite is roasted

VALUES BROKEN ARROW OCTOBER 2019 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

butternut squash soup with an apple added to the blender for a touch of sweetness. Roasted carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes and potatoes are great choices for taking the role of leading actor in blender soups. Place the cooked veggies in the blender and add your choice of liquid, whether it’s chicken broth, vegetable broth, coconut milk, or a combination. Then you should add some aromatics, such as onions, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, fennel, peppers, and chile powder. If your fresh herbs are fading in the cooler weather, you can add smaller amounts of dried herbs like sage, oregano, thyme, or basil.

Blend the ingredients until they’re smooth, adding more liquid if necessary. Pour into a saucepan and heat on the stove, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle into bowls and garnish with herbs, chopped vegetables, cream, or chiles. The options are endless, and you can come up with your own recipes depending on what you have on hand, or enjoy the most. Here are my two favorite blender soup recipes using butternut squash and roasted tomatoes. Find more soup recipes on my website, www.beadsandbasil.com.

Fire Roasted Tomato Soup • • • • • • • • • •

2 tbsp. olive oil 1 cup chopped onion 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth 2 (14 ounce) cans fired roasted diced tomatoes 1 tsp. balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. fresh basil, torn (or 1/2 tsp. dried basil) 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes 1/2 cup heavy cream Salt

Put onion mixture into the bowl of a blender. Add broth, tomatoes, basil, balsamic vinegar and red pepper flakes. Blend until smooth, then pour mixture into a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low and cover with lid. Simmer for 10 minutes, then add the cream and salt, to taste. Turn off heat and serve. Garnish with pine nuts and fresh basil. Note: If tomatoes are in season, you can slice them in half, drizzle with olive oil, salt, and pepper and place on a foil-lined baking sheet. Roast in 375 degree oven for 40-50 minutes, until blistered and soft. Remove skins, if desired.

Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, and cook until fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes.

Roasted Butternut

Squash Soup Serves 4-6 • • • • • • • •

1 large butternut squash 1 apple, peeled 1 yellow onion, peeled 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth 2 leaves of fresh sage (or 1/2 teaspoon dried sage)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut the butternut squash in half lengthwise and scoop out seeds and stringy bits with a spoon. Cut apple in half, and remove stem and core. Cut off onion root and stem, and cut in half. On a foil-lined baking pan, place the butternut squash, apple, and onion halves. Drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes.

Remove apple and onion from the pan and set aside. Continue roasting butternut squash for another 30 minutes, until tender. Allow to cool a few minutes. Using a spoon, scoop out the squash and put into the bowl of a blender. Add the roasted apple and onion, ginger, broth, and sage leaves. Blend until smooth. Pour mixture into a saucepan and bring to a boil, adding

more broth if too thick. Reduce heat and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. Taste to see if more salt and pepper are needed, then serve in bowls. Garnish with toasted pepitas and a sprinkle of paprika, if desired. Note: You can add coconut milk in place of half the broth, if desired.

Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) Saves Lives BY MACY GOODNIGHT

ccording to the CDC, accidental drowning is the No. 1 cause of death in children ages 1-4, after birth defects. No parent can imagine the horror of losing a child, but measures toward prevention are available and are of absolute necessity. Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) provides life-saving swim and self-rescue skills for children six months - 6 years old. ISR’s unique results are achieved through fully customized, safe and effective, one-on-one lessons with only the child and instructor in the water during a lesson. The skills training is completely different from traditional swimming lessons in that children learn to react effectively if they find themselves in the water alone. ISR prioritizes safety first, and emphasizes competence, leading to confidence, and provides a foundation for a lifetime of safe enjoyment in and around the water. A local team of ISR Certified Instructors serves Tulsa and the surrounding areas with a passion for increased protection for children with water safety. Certified Instructor, Brandy Flewellen, provides training in Broken Arrow, and as a mother of a toddler, values the skills training as the highest priority for responsible parenting. “As the mother of a very active 2-year-old, who has been through ISR Swim Lessons, I realize how brave he is and can find trouble,” she said. “Water safety is not just a summer issue, with access to pools and lakes. Kids will find water anywhere in the home and can drown in 30 seconds.” Drowning can occur in bathtubs, toilets, and even a bucket of water. A child can drown in less than 2 inches of water. ISR skills training has been proven 100% effective as a lifesaving measure for children against accidental drowning. “I have seen children who received traditional swim lessons for years and still (continued on next page)

(continued from previous page) cannot swim to save their lives,” said Brandy. “There is just no comparison to the value of ISR Swim Training.” The local ISR Certified Instructors include: Brandy Flewellen, Alison Cone, JoAnna Gilkey, and Jessie Deherrera. The cost of ISR Skills Training is comparable to traditional lessons, Brandy believes there is no price you can put on the life-saving measures given to a child. “This could save your child’s life,” said Brandy. “It is every parent’s responsibility to make the sacrifices necessary to ensure the safety of their child.” Scholarship opportunities are available for anyone that might qualify. Brandy’s passion for supporting life-saving water skills to all children is expanded to include a mission to provide training to as many African American children as possible. According to the CDC, the fatal unintentional drowning rate for African Americans was significantly higher than that of other ethnicities across all ages. As a mother of an African American child, it weighs heavy on Brandy’s heart, and she has made it her mission to make a positive impact in this community. Amy Mutispaugh has made it her life’s work to advocate for ISR. In September of last year, her 4-year-old son, Evan, was lost in a drowning

As parents, there can always be that second that you can’t get back.” For more information and to schedule ISR Training for your child, call Brandy at (918) 402-8801. they choose the protection that is most appropriate for them. To that end, we have developed many kinds of coverage’s that promote customer choice,” explains Becky. “We are flexible, affordable and secure. Our full portfolio of plans lets you tailor coverage to YOUR needs, and you can rest easy knowing that, we are an innovator in the industry with over 50 collective years of health coverage experience.” For those customers who are either on a limited budget or are concerned about having to satisfy a high annual deductible before they receive any benefits from their health plans, the company offers some products which provide first-dollar benefits for covered services and substantial network discounts across a

broad spectrum of providers. These plans are typically more affordable than more comprehensive plans, while still providing the first dollar protection and assurances that a limited protection plan offers. For instance, “In the event you need additional protection, the purchase of PremierChoice Specified Disease/ Sickness Plan*, Accident* and the Optional Guaranteed Short Term Insurability Rider* provides you with a onetime right to purchase our PremierMed Short Term Medical-Surgical Expense Plan* without any additional medical underwriting,” Becky stated. “Our PremierChoice Specified Disease/ Sickness and Accident Plans* allow you to receive first dollar payments for expenses incurred up to a benefit maximum for covered health care services. And with the special doctor office visit “rollover”* feature in each Specified Disease/ Sickness and Accident Plan, if you don’t use your benefits, you don’t lose them.” No matter which type of health coverage you choose, they want to help their customers enhance their protection. They feature a full line of ancillary products, including Health and Wellness*, Critical Illness*, Specified Disease/ Sickness*, Accident*, Short Term Accident Disability Income*, Income Protector*, Term Life Insurance*, Dental and Vision Plans*. In a marketplace characterized by high customer turnover and

low customer loyalty, Becky emphasizes, “Our team differentiates ourselves from others by creating long-term relationships with our customers, and we consistently deliver on our promise of dependability, personal attention and customer care. Please don’t let others tell you what you need or pay for coverage that isn’t right for you. Tell me what you are looking for, and I will work to put together the right policy tailored specifically for you. As your future conditions change, we can add to your original plan.” *Optional plans are underwritten by Freedom Life Insurance Company of America. Exclusions and limitations apply. HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL

IS YOUR KIND OF A SPOOKY TIME! Only a short drive from Tulsa or Ft.Smith, the Ghost Hosts of Oklahoma’s 60-acre park would like you to join them each weekend this fall! Open every Friday and Saturday through October 26th. BY BEKI AKIN

he Castle welcomes one and all to create your best holiday event! Whether you are looking for familyfriendly fun or spine-tingling thrill, the Castle of Muskogee’s Halloween Festival has your fill. 6 p.m. Nightly: With a zany mix of wings, capes, and horns, the Monsters of Castleton emerge to gather in the village. The music starts, and the ghouls begin their dance, which signifies the beginning of the evening

festivities. Everyone is invited to watch and are certainly encouraged to join. The dance is one of the most magical moments of the festival. The newest gem of this season’s festival is the Halloween Train. Guests will board in the Harbor and enjoy the enchanting colors, characters and catchy music of the Castle. The track loops through the woodlands up to the Maypole and back. Everyone may ride, but it is at its best with the younger visitors of Castleton. Families will enjoy the array of activities which are sure to provide plenty of photo ops and fall fun within the realm of Halloween Land (8 & Under). The Castle Village also has pony rides, inflatables, cocoa, and sweets! If you are ready for a bit more fright, the Haunted Hayride is

sure to provide mid-range scares and fun for the group. Getting Spookier... Domus Horrificus has upgraded its shell with a new skin. The Horror Film themed haunt has new residents. Slender Man has made a home within the walls of Horrificus. With the familiar terror of the Purge, guests may have no option, but to escape through ventilation shafts and crawl spaces. There are dark halls and tight spaces in this cinematic nightmare haunt. Although like themes past, it seems that Jigsaw has shuffled the board to create an entirely new layout. All Haunters beware of this terrifying five skull haunt. Perhaps the most infamous of the Halloween Festival is the Trail of Blood. Hearts race once guests realize they have suddenly been abandoned

in the backwoods of the Castle. A clue for this year... more Giggles under the Big Top. Fans of TOB may also enjoy the excitement provided during the Dark Tower Zombie Hunt, where you are issued a weapon and tasked with a mission to clear the area of Zombies. Parking and admission to the Halloween Village are free. Tickets must be purchased for attractions. Prices range from $3 to $15 each with combo specials available. Advance tickets may be purchased online, okcastle.com. Hours are 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Halloween Land hours are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Gleamed of. “I love to show people how they can save money and still have beautiful wood finishes that almost look new,” he said. “Many people believe that all wood refinishing is messy and that remodelers always take longer. Gleam Guard is completely different.” Gleam Guard’s technique employs professional craftsmen to refinish cabinets with greater benefits compared to complete kitchen remodeling. Their process accomplishes refinished woodwork without much sanding and toxic fumes and can be done with a day or two, with minimal dust. Cabinets will not need to be emptied to complete the work, saving even more time. “All you need to do is open the door and let us in to work in your kitchen,” said Tracy. “In other words, no prep is needed, such as removing hardware, covering furniture or anything else – we take care of all of it.” The breakthrough technology they use restores lasting beauty to cabinets and other interior woodwork. The application bonds

to the original finish, enhancing the wood grain and giving it a fresh-oiled look, however, unlike oiled methods, the results will last for decades. “Sometimes people think I am going to make everything look shiny,” Tracy said, “but there are actually three sheens to choose from – satin, semi-gloss

This process works not only on traditional wood surfaces but on painted, glazed and pickled woods as well. Gleam Guard can be used on new or old cabinets, and keeping the new finish is as easy as wiping with a damp cloth. A bit of vinegar is all you need for stubborn spots. Project completion time is a top priority for Tracy and Gleam Guard craftsmen. Each project is worked on one a time, to ensure quality and reliability. Honesty and integrity are at the base of all of the work with Tracy and his crew of professionals. Their reputation proceeds them, with an earned A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, as well as awards for

a beautiful finish on this wood and allow it to blend in with the rest of the cabinets. Each job comes with a five-year

guarantee that includes one free touchup service within five years of project completion, as necessary. In-home demonstrations can be scheduled to see how peels, flakes, scratches and minor nicks can disappear. “We can bring your kitchen back to life, and you can have a fresh look in your kitchen sooner than you think,” Tracy said. Gleam Guard is happy to provide plenty of references and testimonials from satisfied customers. Call today and have a kitchen you will love just in time for the holidays. BY TED KING

T

he Oklahoma Constitutional Carry law goes into effect Nov. 1, and Danny Jones and Andy Shidell of Crusader Tactical in Broken Arrow want gun owners to be ready. Constitutional Carry, which passed the legislature earlier this year and signed by the governor, provides that gun owners do not need a permit or training to own and carry a gun in public. Here are some of the other provisions of Constitutional Carry: • a person must be at least a 21 year old citizen of the United States • must be a resident of Oklahoma • cannot be a felon • gun purchases must go through a federal background check. A gun owner may not: • take a gun onto the campus of a school or university (public or private) • take a gun into any government building, municipal, county, state, or federal and any other building where government officials conduct business

38 |

• take a gun into a bar • take a gun inside any building that posts a “no guns allowed” sign • be using a prescription drug while carrying a firearm On the subject of cannabis, now legal in Oklahoma for medical purposes, Danny Jones said the situation is confusing. Federal law does not allow the use of cannabis. Currently, Oklahoma does not allow cardholders for medical marijuana to purchase firearms. “If a customer with a medical marijuana card tries to purchase a gun and does not reveal on the form he must fill out that he is using cannabis products, he might still be able to pass the federal background check and purchase the gun, but still be in violation of the law.” Jones mentioned that some schools allow teachers to carry guns but only with the permission of a superintendent. One can take a gun to a state park but not inside any buildings in a state park. Travel outside of Oklahoma with a gun will require a permit. Oklahoma is a “shall issue state,” which means

VALUES BROKEN ARROW OCTOBER 2019 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

if a gun owner meets the state’s requirements, the gun owner will get a permit. Some other states are “may issue states,” meaning it is up to the discretion of an official in that state to allow a gun owner a permit. Thirty-two states recognize Oklahoma’s conceal carry permits. Oklahoma recognizes permits from all 50 states. Both Jones and Shidell recommend the website www.gunstocarry.com/oklahoma. They also recommend that all gun owners look into knowing the law as it pertains to the use of firearms. One site they mentioned is www.uslawshield.com. Before Constitutional Carry, a person had to take part in a firearm safety course in order to get a permit to purchase a handgun. Although training is not required under the Constitutional Carry law, both Jones and Shidell believe training is still a good idea for new gun owners. Crusader Tactical will offer a training course Saturday, Oct. 26. The course is $60. “It’s an eight-hour course. You have to be able to shoot 50 rounds to prove you can handle a firearm. It’s not a shooting class but a safety class,” Jones said. After Nov. 1, Crusader Tactical will still offer a safety class every three months. They also offer a ladies only class. Danny Jones and Andy Shidell have been friends since their days as students at Oklahoma University. They decided to open the gun shop after retiring from their professions, Andy Shidell from the U.S. Probation Office and Danny Jones from his sand and gravel business. “We don’t make big piles of money, but we meet nice folks and get to do something we enjoy,” said Jones. “We still don’t get to shoot together enough,” added Shidell. “We have the right to defend ourselves and our families whether it’s with a pistol, shotgun or AR 15. Guns are a tool,” Jones said. “Nothing more, nothing less,” Shidell added.

Here’s what our customers have to say about PermaSeal U.S.A. Preserve Your Investment We wanted to write you to express how satisfied we are with your product, service and the crew. We built our house 3 years ago including the cedar deck, as soon as we moved in we stained the deck and it looked great. Unfortunately, it only looked good for about 6 months and we knew we had to do something to protect our investment, we were not too excited about the prospect of having to stain our deck, at least once a year, to maintain it. Thank God for Permaseal, your team came out, cleaned the deck and permanently sealed the deck with the penetrating sealant. Now it looks just like the day we moved in and we do not have to stain it, unless we want

a different color than the natural wood look. Further, cleaning it is a breeze, no need to power wash it, simply hose it down. We are so happy to know we have protected our investment for at least 25 years and we have just scheduled your team to come out and permanently seal our drive way as well. We can highly recommend Permaseal to everyone that is looking for a permanent solution, peace of mind. The whole thing was a very pleasurable experience. From the initial visit, where you thoroughly explained the entire process, with no sales pressure. To the polite, punctual and professional crew that came and did the work. Thank you again for helping us preserve our investment.

explained by general manager Rusty Magiera this way, “It’s a business of relationships, and our inventory speaks for itself.” United Ford, which is owned by the Penske Automotive Group, sells Ford parts directly to the public in all 50 states and internationally. United Ford receives about 1,800 orders for parts a day. The warehouse can handle up to 4,000 deliveries a day. Most parts come with a warranty of two years, and some parts have longer warranties. Magiera is proud of the fact that the average tenure of employees at United Ford is 23 years, and one employee has been with the company for 40 years. Rhonda Henley has been with the company for almost four years and

has worked in the auto parts industry for the past 29 years. She started in Grove as an auto parts delivery driver and worked her way up to become a parts manager. With her friendly personality, Rhonda brings a career of experience assisting customers with the parts they need. Rhonda says she plans to stay with United Ford for years to come. “We have parts as far back as 1980.” Special orders may take between one to three days. “We ship nationwide and overseas if needed,” Rhonda said. She said Omnicraft parts are another brand of replacement parts available to their customers. “Our employees are empowered to take care of the customer,” Magiera said.

A Truly Beneficial Bazaar BY MACY GOODNIGHT

T

he 47th Annual Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), Alpha Rho Chapter, Arts, and Crafts Benefit Bazaar will be held Oct. 26, 2019, at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Broken Arrow. From 9 a.m.4 p.m., guests will enjoy shopping with over 87 vendors, and admission to the event is free to the public. The bazaar offers an astonishing selection of goodness, including a bake sale by the United Methodist Women. Guests will have the added benefit of access to the St. Stephen’s UMC Pumpkin Patch, well-known for their beautiful pumpkins and gourds available for purchase. Concessions will be offered throughout the day, with options for breakfast and lunch. ESA President, Linda Jones, and member Nancy Stanley are co-chairs of the bazaar and are eager to share their excitement. “We have something for everyone,” said Nancy, “and many, if not most, are all handcrafted and

homemade.” Jewelry, pottery, weavers, skincare, and more are included in the many treasures that will be available, just in time for shopping for the holidays. “There are lots of great gift ideas,” said Linda, “all unique and homemade.” Activities for the kids will be available to entertain them, in addition to a fun trip to the pumpkin patch. Guests will also love the used book sale and silent auction. Guests do not have to be present for the end of the auction but will need to provide a

phone number in case they win. Silent auction items will include vendor items, as well as exciting gift baskets. All proceeds from the event support the many philanthropic commitments of ESA, including St. Jude and Hope for Heroes. The sorority’s sole endeavor is to work to give to others and is completely volunteer-driven. The bazaar is one of their largest fundraisers for the year. “I just love it,” said Nancy. “I love doing this; I love meeting the crafters, and just doing something for someone else.” ESA contributes greatly to many local organizations as well, including BA Neighbors and Meals on Wheels. There are many giving hands involved in presenting the bazaar, including some help from local youth and the Boy Scouts. With so many organizations receiving aid as a result of this event, it takes a great deal of support. “It’s not just one group making money for themselves,” said Linda. “There are many people who benefit from this event.” Vendor space is still available and can be reserved by calling Nancy at (918) 251-0617 or by email at esacraftshowba@gmail.com. More information on the bazaar can be found on Facebook at @ESAbrokenarrow.

PERSONALIZE YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE BY JOSH MORIN

O

ne of the most common questions people ask me is, “What is the best way to train?” The problem with that question is that everyone’s body, nutrition and lifestyle is different, so there is no one-sizefits-all miracle workout or training program. The real answer is the way that best suits your specific goals and body type. For one person, the solution may be CrossFit, for another, it’s heavyweights and for someone else, it’s yoga and running. Just because it works for them does not necessarily mean that it will work for you. So how do you figure that out? STEP 1: SET GOALS What are you specifically seeking to accomplish through your exercise regiment? Gain muscle? Build strength? Develop endurance? Burn

fat? Improve flexibility? Train for a sport or competition? All of these goals are achieved through different types of training. Deciding on clear intentions helps you to focus specifically on getting the results you are after. There are many approaches to exercise, and not just any single one is the “best.” STEP 2: MAP OUT A PLAN If you are just starting out or have limited experience, finding a fitness mentor to answer your questions and assist you in your programming is a great way to start out. Just like with diet opinions, always consider the source of information and do your own research and fact-checking if you decide to build your own plan. Hiring a personal trainer who has in-depth professional experience in the type of program you decide on will be the most beneficial in the long run. If you find yourself in a place where been training for years but seem to stagnate in your progress, find a more experienced mentor who can offer insight and suggestions to assist you in adjusting your training methods. The most dangerous approach is to dive head-first into a program, class or

activity that you’ve never tried. Going hard at a new sport or program without taking the time to ease into it and test how your body responds is the fastest way to find yourself injured, in pain, and eventually losing motivation and giving up. Most gyms offer a free day pass, so check out your options and make sure they provide the amenities you want at a price that fits your budget. Sports and training classes typically offer tryouts and free trials as well, so take advantage of those opportunities before spending money and committing. Once you’ve done your research and learned how to take into account your body type and how you recover doing specific workouts, map out a scheduled plan that you can commit to following weekly. Schedule around various muscle groups, rest and intensity levels. Training all-out every single day is not the most beneficial approach. Your body isn’t built to handle that kind of abuse. Rest and recovery are just as important when it comes to your progress, so giving your body time to heal and build makes a significant difference in your results and will optimize your strength and energy for higher output on training days. Physical activity, nutrition and supplementation each play a role in the fitness process. If you’re eating too much, not enough, or even the wrong kinds of foods that will sabotage your training efforts. Different types of supplements work together with your

training and nutrition to help prepare your body for a workout, get faster or better results and aid in recovery. STEP 3: TRIAL AND ERROR Now that you’ve set your goals, committed to a program, mapped out a routine and have been working out for a few months, it’s time to assess your results. How are you recovering after each workout? Do you feel tired? Fatigued? Lethargic? Unable to recover before your next class or workout? Or do you feel energized? Full of vitality? Strength improving? Is your body’s appearance reflecting your efforts? How do you ultimately feel? Over the past 15 years, I have tried every type of training that I’ve come across, including CrossFit, low volume heavy lifting, high volume training, functional strength, yoga, pilates and many more, and have discovered that what works best for me is not what works best for my friends and colleagues. I understand my body, how I recover, and what is required through my workouts in order to achieve the results I am seeking in correlation to my specific goals. It will take time and consistency while exposing yourself to different types of training in order to figure out what one works best for you, and if you realize the one you’re doing isn’t working for you, explore your options until you find something that does what you want and fine-tune your nutrition and supplement intake accordingly. Remember, the best kind of training is simply the one you commit to.
