I
always tell my clients to be aware of the two beasts that run the markets. Their names are FEAR and GREED. Well right now, the GREED MONSTER is back in full force. The greed monster is more sneaky and difficult to identify than its counterpart FEAR. A person that is fearful can typically identify that they are afraid. The typical response to fear is either “fight or flight.” Clients will tell me, “I’m afraid! I want out!” Greed, on the other hand, is much more shrewd. I see competent, intelligent, and adept people being swept up by the skillful cunning of the greed monster. I believe that greed is a more clever and sly adversary because it plays on one’s ego, one’s self-pride, the part of one’s psyche that feels that it deserves more! It plays on the part of the mind that feels it’s smarter, and can play the market better than the next guy. The greed monster sounds very similar to the Monday morning quarter-back who wants to question every trade with the gift of hindsight. Common statements that I hear from someone afflicted by the greed monster include: “The market is at all time highs. I should be too!” “I want 20%returns!” It is understandable that people naturally always want to beat the indexes. We do too. However, the market has taught us all over and over that what goes up… also comes down! If you have a good defense (i.e.: protecting you from the downside of the market), your offense does-n’t have to take as much risk because it’s not trying to make up for the 40% loss from the last time. What matters is the results year over year and the score at the end of the game. The market is at all time highs! Mark my words…what goes up, also comes down. The market does not move in only one direction! Folks have to remember that the stock mar-ket requires that you think in a counter-intuitive way. Most peo-ple feel better and safer in the market when it is high. When the market is low, folks feel worse and think the market is a bad place to be. Don’t get caught up in the euphoria of the market highs. Don’t allow yourself to get hoodwinked into chasing returns of what did better last month or last year. Be smart. Stay aware. The cure for both fear and greed is to have a solid strategy that you stick with through the market cycles. Getting squeamish midway

through a market cycle and changing your strategy is a sure way to achieve negative results. If you don’t really have a strategy or are working with someone that you are not sure has one either, give us a call. We can help.

FRESH FRUIT
FANATICS TURN FRUIT INTO MASTERPIECES BY TERESA BOND-MASON
A
n artist has many possible mediums with which to create. But, have you ever considered fruit as a part of that arsenal? At Edible Arrangements, they are not only artists, but fresh fruit fanatics! With two locations in Tulsa and one in Owasso, General Manager Tom Staab has more than 10 artists who are ready to create a masterpiece for you. “Each employee receives special training to design the food bouquets as well as learn how to work with the perishable goodies,” says Tom. He adds, “It takes a lot of patience and an eye for detail to make each order just right.” But the creation is only part of the story. “We take great pride in our customer service and we want to exceed all expectations. Because, not only do we want to make the person who places the order happy, but the recipient as well,” says Tom. He explains his staff demands
the highest levels of quality and representing the Edible Arrangement brand means the highest of standards are used each time a gift is made and sent out. Birthdays and baby showers aren’t the only times to think of these fancy delicacies. The bouquets and gifts are so unique, they’re the perfect present for a special thank you, a congratulations and even for those friends and coworkers when you can’t decide what to get them. They even make the perfect centerpiece at your next get together! “It’s a fun gift people are always happy to receive,” states Tom. And unlike flowers, Edible Arrangements are devoured long before a flower can even lose a petal. Orders can be made online, but Tom is quick to point out that any order can be customized. f you’ve recently made the drive from Broken Arrow south on Hwy 51 towards Coweta, you may have noticed that S&W Tree Specialists are no longer at their longtime location. The company moved about a year ago to a new location providing them a lot more room for equipment. S&W has been family owned and operated since 2011 and provides services throughout northeastern Oklahoma. Dayto-day operations are handled by Dale and Leilani Hughes, Robby Mizumura and Bryan Merseburgh. The old saying goes that you can always find someone to do the job for less, but you’re wise doing business with someone who does the job right the first time, every time.
Company spokesperson Leilani says, “We always operate at the highest quality and safety standards and are known by most as the preferred treecare company in northeastern Oklahoma.” S&W provides tree care, plant healthcare, property maintenance, tree trimming, snow removal and other emergency storm services to businesses and homeowners. After devastation from tornadoes, micro bursts and ice storms, most neighborhoods are inundated by “door knockers” with trucks and trailers looking for clean-up jobs. They might do the job for a little less, but Leilani cautions you to be certain that whoever you hire has the necessary skills to do the job properly. Ask questions, don’t pay
anyone in advance, and always ask for credentials including proof of insurance and the amount of coverage provided. S&W also installs Christmas lights. You can buy commercial grade lights from them and they will do the installation, take down, and store the lights for you until next Christmas. They can install lights you already own, but you’ll probably be better off in the long run buying commercial grade products from S&W so that neither you nor they will have to mess with tangled light cords. Check with S&W when you need tree services. If we get heavy snows this winter, call S&W for a free estimate for snow removal. Schedule a meeting, get your questions answered and receive a free, no obligation estimate.

his year, more than 2.5 million customers will invite Honey Baked Ham to be an important part of their holiday gatherings from Thanksgiving through the beginning of the New Year. It all started back in the 1940s when founder Harry Hoenselaar patented the perfect final touch to his delicious gourmet hams…the spiral-slicing process. In addition, Harry also created a unique curing and cooking process that produced unbelievably high quality, bone-in smoked hams. In 1957, Harry opened his first Honey Baked Ham Co. store in Detroit, Michigan. To celebrate their 60th anniversary this year, The Honey Baked Ham Co. announced a culinary partnership with Chef Geoffrey Zakarian. You’ll recognize him as a renowned restaurateur, cookbook author, celebrity Iron Chef, longtime favorite judge on Food Network’s Chopped and host of Cooks vs Cons and Emmy nominated, The Kitchen. “Serving Honey Baked Ham has been a special tradition in my own family throughout the years,” said Zakarian. “I am thrilled to partner with the brand and play 12 |

a role in their milestone 60th Anniversary.” The company is still family-owned and each product still employs the same procedures Harry created from the beginning… one at a time. This is just one of the unique features that makes Honey Baked Ham and Turkey so deliciously different from similar products. Whole Honey Baked Turkeys are sold roasted, smoked or Cajun style. In addition to the exquisite taste, turkey breasts are fully cooked and ready to serve, allowing you to spend less time in the kitchen and more time celebrating life with friends and family, one meal at a time. “We’re celebrating six decades of being invited into homes and onto holiday dinner tables, generation after generation,” said Linda Heasley, CEO of The Honey Baked Ham Co. “We are thrilled to welcome Chef Geoffrey Zakarian to The Honey Baked Ham Co. family, and look forward to seeing him bring our products to life in exciting new ways over the holidays.” Stop by Honey Baked Ham at 61st & Memorial in Tulsa to let Owner/ Operator Lee Griffin and his crew help you

create the setting, moments and taste that that have helped make holidays so special for 60 years! That sweet, crunchy glaze on both the ham and turkey breasts can only be found at Honey Baked Ham. And each ham and turkey breast is glazed by hand in the store to assure that you’re receiving the freshest, best-tasting products. Nothing’s better the day after than a Honey Baked Ham sandwich! “We have everything you need,” says Lee. “And we look forward to serving you!”

She offices in Tulsa and specializes in innovative life and health coverage solutions for selfemployed individuals, families, small business owners and their employees. “The health coverage plans we offer are quite unique. Instead of presenting our clients with a selection of hard and fast plans and asking them to select the one which best fits their needs,” says Becky, “we ask our customers to tell us what they feel they need. We then make recommendations and write a plan which addresses their concerns. “Many customers begin with plan basics and add to it as their lives change over the years. CHRISTMAS SHOWS
CELEBRATING THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON
I
BY KRISTI ROE-OWEN
t’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the most wonderful holiday bucket list would not be complete without a chorus of carolers in a sanctuary filled with lush holiday greens and the golden glow of holiday lights. If you’re looking for a some soul-filling Christmas love, several churches in Tulsa offer performances to set your heart soaring this season. Tulsa Founders Chorus is an “all-American barbershop harmony style” chorus performing in four-part harmony. They will be performing Merry Christmas, Hallelujah at John Knox Presbyterian on December 3 at 1 p.m. Sound Decision will be guest starring at this limited seating event, and Christmas dinner will be prepared by Chef Don Conner. For reservations, contact founderschorus@cox.net. If you are dying to hark how the sweet silver bells all seem to say throw cares away, also on December 3 at 4 p.m. is the First United Methodist Church handbell choir performance. This performance by the Susannah Wesley Handbell Choir is an annual event offering selections from traditional church hymns, contemporary worship arrangements, and Christmas favorites. The concert is an ethereal and beautiful holiday tradition to enjoy. Boston Avenue United

Methodist will be hosting its 22nd annual Natalie O. Warren presentation of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 17 at 5 p.m. The 18thcentury oratorio will be performed by the Chancel Choir, Soloists, and Members of the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra. The operatic piece, written as a meditative reflection on Jesus Christ, captures the more sacred side of the holiday season. This inspiring event will take place in the church’s beautiful sanctuary. Also on December 17 at 11 a.m., Bixby’s Woodlake Church is hosting an exciting Christmas performance in the Union High School Performing Arts Center. The production is set up like a talent show where amazing, talented performers will wow you as they compete to win. Photos with Santa and hot cocoa before and after the show will be available. For nurseryaged children, childcare will be provided. This general admission

event is free and open to the public, no reservation required. For a beautiful contemporary Christian holiday performance, check out Church on the Move’s big event Christmas on the Move. This event will be offered at 12 separate times at three different locations, so be sure to visit their website, www. churchonthemove.com, to find the right performance for you. This church calls this event “a warm and meaningful event for the whole family.” No tickets are required for this event, but it is recommended that you arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled performance. The later Saturday performances will also be available online at COTMLive.com. Most local churches also offer Christmas Eve services which include beautiful performances, so there’s no better time to visit your local ministry. THE E 7TH ANNUAL
BY WHI HITL T EY MUM TL UMM M
T
he Holiday season is back upon us, bringing the chaos of shopping, planning, and preparing with it. From wrapping presents to holiday parties, our appearances are usually the last thing on the list. Just in time for Christmas, BA Med Spa is once again giving the gift of beauty by offering their most popular procedures during their Seventh Annual Twelve Days of Christmas event. At BA Med Spa, they understand that it can be difficult to come in and talk about the things you want to change about yourself, and they’ve worked very hard to help patients feel at ease. The friendly staff, cozy atmosphere and procedure demonstrations are all part of their unique experience. There’s never been a better time to come in to discuss which treatments are right for you. “In winter, most of us tend to neglect our skin and personal health. It’s the best time of year to take control of your body and boost your confidence,” said manager Melody Hawkins. This year, BA Med Spa is adding something new to their Twelve Days of Christmas line up– NovaThreads. These are synthetic absorbable sutures made of polydioxnone (PDO), one of the safest materials to be implanted in the body. They can be injected nearly anywhere, but are especially effective in the neck and jawline. Your skin fully absorbs the PDO within four to six months, and you’re left without any scar tissue. NovaThreads are designed to support the existing V-shape of the face, or lift and reposition tissue to recreate it. The spa has also made their most popular facial fi llers, Juvéderm and Radiesse, more affordable to more people this holiday season. Juvéderm is the world’s number one selling 20 |

FOSTERING HOPE FOR KIDS BY DEANNA REBRO
Help us care for local children in need by becoming a therapeutic foster parent.
L
eslie Yocham, agency training and recruiting supervisor at Choices for Life Foster Care, is often asked what it takes to become a therapeutic foster parent. Her response is, “Patience, understanding and the willingness to ask for help to do what is best for a child in need.” Foster parents from all walks of life have answered the call and experienced some of the most difficult, yet rewarding, challenges in their lives. Choices for Life, with offices in Sapulpa, Ponca City, Checotah and Oklahoma City, focuses on children with a higher level of emotional and behavioral issues. Statewide, there are more than 130 children ranging from 4 to 17—many of them native Americans-- awaiting therapeutic foster care. All come with their

own adversities through no fault of their own. Their issues range from extreme neglect to verbal and sexual abuse. Their special needs require special care that is not available through traditional foster channels. “Most of these kids have had unique and traumatic experiences far beyond their years,” says Leslie. “Imagine the feeling of a kid being picked up at school by state workers. The parents have been arrested. The child does not have a chance to say good-bye to anyone, leaving school with strangers and only the clothes on his or her back.” Many times education is far distant because the focus is on simply surviving another day. Kids are rescued from bad situations, but do not recognize the danger, feeling as though they have no control over their lives.
BIXBY, JENKS, & SAPULPA DECEMBER 2017
The sooner they are placed in therapeutic foster care, the sooner they can start rebuilding their lives. Each child is carefully evaluated and then matched with a strong and stable foster family who will nurture the child to heal, grow and develop the interpersonal and behavioral skills to become a positive and accomplished adult. Foster parents must help children with emotions that sometimes seem to change by the minute. The training they receive, professional support, mentoring and continuing education assures them they are not alone in their journey. Help is just a phone call away every minute of every day. The 6 to 8 week training is free of charge to foster parents. Costs for the child are reimbursed. Parents not only learn to work with the foster children, but with their biological families, with the goal to eventually reunite them. If you have even thought of becoming a therapeutic foster parent, please call Choices for Life today. A waiting child could use your help.

veryone is aware of the rapid rate in which the world is changing, but all may not be cognizant of how the changes are affecting higher education. Dr. Jay Gary is Assistant Dean of Online and Lifelong Learning at Oral Roberts University. He is responsible for online adjunct faculty and online degree program development. When speaking with Dr. Gary, he provided an eye-opening view about the 6,000,000+ students now enrolled in higher education distance courses through U.S. degreegranting higher education institutions that provide online degree opportunities. Dr. Gary says, “We live in a time of accelerating change and there is no better place to be than ORU. Our faculty perpetually commits to the Whole Person Education, which means discovering your true purpose and carrying it out to the uttermost bounds. To be effective, you need excellent preparation—spiritually, intellectually, physically and socially— preparing to change the world for the better.” The Distance Education Enrollment Report 2017 from Digital Learning Compass took a detailed look at the trends and patterns of distance education enrollments among U.S. Degree-granting higher education institutions. In the study, which can be found online at www.digitallearningcompass.org, it was reported that 30% of all students in
higher education are now taking at least one distance course. Distance learners are split almost evenly between students who are exclusively “distance” and those who take some courses in person. The majority of “exclusively-distance” students live in the same state as their institution, but a surprising 42% are studying at outof-state institutions. Graduate students are twice as likely to take all courses at a distance and more than one-third of graduate students study at least in part via distance vs. 29% for undergraduates. Why are students taking so many of their studies online? When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. The average student age is 30-49. The average student is spending 80% of his or her time online and by taking online courses there is no commute, there is more time available to spend with family or friends, and online studies are both accessible and affordable. Learning is increasing in quality and in quantity and most students see the competitive advantages in our digitally transformed world. Students work on their own time and at their own pace, and find that online studies help them become self-directed and able to contribute with others through technology and web conferencing. It’s a fact that correspondence study is now ancient. DECEMBER 2017 BIXBY, JENKS, & SAPULPA

BUSINESS
If you’re looking for Dr. Marshal Wright (Chair of the Graduate School of Business) outside of class, you may find him on the basketball or tennis court. He frequently gathers in the gym with friends for a pick-up basketball game. He was also part of the ORU tennis team that ranked tenth in the nation years ago and tennis is still his passion. “Our online Master of Business Administration in Leadership (Online MBA-L) provides a course of study emphasizing the two critical components of outstanding business leadership—technical business knowledge and expertise across all of the core components of a highly-valued and traditional MBA degree and effective leadership training, comprehensively integrated into one program,” stated Dr. Wright. “Being a great business leader is about both the technical side of business—gaining and applying knowledge and expertise across the fully integrated range of business concepts and disciplines; and, it is about great leadership—creating and casting a strategic vision and inspiring and empowering
others to the fulfillment of higher and better performance and outcomes, both professionally and personally. The MBA-L program has been designed to deliver both of these areas of emphasis through a fully online cohort program.” Although fully online, the MBA-L degree is strongly interactive and relationship oriented designed to help students with retention and graduation. It is a fulltime course, defined as six credit hours for three sessions a year. The study is adult-learner oriented, manageable in light of life’s responsibilities, qualifies for financial aid and can be finished in two years. It emphasizes integrated business and leadership, the ORU whole person distinctive, and is very doable with regard to time and expense. Acceptance requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0, plus other applicable requirements. FOOD REVIEW
I
have a checklist of things I do before I go to a restaurant to review it. The first of those things is to do what anyone would do before checking out a new place, to ask around, and the second is to check out their website and online reviews and get an idea of what they’re known for. Before I visited Rincón Mexican Grill & Cantina, I popped over to their Facebook page. It was loaded with positive reviews, especially about the service and quality of food. When I asked around in person, the response was also entirely positive, with most of the comments focused on the quality of service and friendliness. This this family-owned spot gets a lot of love for its charm. Most Mexican restaurants these days are overflowing with an abundance of various bright tchotchkes from south of the border, often distilling Mexican ambiance down to an overplayed trope. By contrast, Rincón is simple and clean with neutral art and furnishings. True to its reputation, the service was warm and welcoming. The food came out surprisingly fast. ydration is healthy. Since approximately 70% of our bodies are water, it makes sense we should use the purest, healthiest water we can find. Achieving the healthiest hydration is not as transparent as purchasing a bottle of water. It begins at the cellular level for the body and the most useful water for our bodies includes three primary factors: antioxidant level, pH level, and absorption or hydration rate. Brent and Rhonda Nicholson, are owners of IO Pure Water, a local business that specializes in offering a very effective, small in-home alkalized ionized water machine that aids in supporting better health for you and your family; and will save you from purchasing expensive bottled water that can be acidic to your body. There are eight models that provide everything from various water types, pH ranges, and antioxidant hydrogen rich water. Models include counterstyle, under-the-counter, travel and shower units; including ones for commercial restaurant use. The couple became intrigued with this alkaline antioxidant water purification system when they were shown the science behind it in a demonstration comparing bottled water, tap water, Gatorade, and soda pop. The acid and alkalinity differences were measured with an ORP meter (Oxidation Reduction Potential which measures oxidation and antioxidation). The bottled water measured 370+ oxidation, tap water was 400+ oxidation, Gatorade measured at 350+, soda came in at 300+ oxidation; being highly acidic. Comparatively, their sample of alkalized ionized water measured at negative 300 antioxidation, meaning it was highly antioxidant and very good for your health. Alongside the health benefits of this machine, you can Brent and Rhonda Nicholson
FREQUENLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is it?
Ionized hydrogen rich water in its natural state flows over rocks and water. During the 1970’s, a Japanese scientist found a way to mimic this water ionization by inventing a machine using platinum covered titanium plates that circulates the water and enriches its ionization, alkalinity and purity; similar to the natural waters you would find in places such as Lourdes, France and Nordenau, Germany.
What will it do for me?
Everyone is different, some people receive many health benefits, and we have even heard about amazing health recovery testimonies.
Is this the same alkaline water that I will find on the grocery store shelf?
No, it does not have chemicals in the water to create alkalinity.
How does it taste?
It tastes good; a lot of people don’t like the taste of water and will replace it with soda and coffee. This water is very fresh and pleasing. also adjust the system pH levels from 2.5 to 11.5, to create tap water for a variety of other household uses. For instance, by adjusting the machines pH level to 2.5 your water will be very acidic and can be used as a “cleanser”; hospitals in Japan use it at this level to sterilize and disinfect instruments – it’s been known to kill e coli, salmonella, MRSA and other bacteria. 6.0 pH level is great for your skin…8.5 to 9.5 pH is excellent for drinking for both you and your pets…11.5 pH acts as a laundry detergent and degreaser because it emulsifies oils, dirt, and removes pesticides from vegetables during washing. Vegetables washed with this water are known to taste fresher and last longer. The greatest allure of this water purification system is that it is affordable and long lasting. Contact Brent and Rhonda and they will be happy to give you more information.
