I
t’s that time of year again. Friday night lights, Saturday game day tailgate parties, the cooler days of Fall and the leaves changing colors. I love this time of year. It is our family’s favorite. With football starting and hunting season just around the corner life is full of hope and promise. Just as it requires preparation to get ready to play in that big game; so too, it takes preparation when planning for that “big day” of retirement. The last few years preceding retirement and the first few years immediately following retirement, is what we call “the retirement red zone”. The reason we call it the red zone is because these years are most crucial to the outcome of your financial retirement success. It’s just like in football where the red zone is the last 20 yards before crossing the goal and is critical to winning or defeat, the last few years before and after your retirement can make you or break you. It’s during this time that you need to develop a careful, drawn-out strategic plan….a GAME PLAN. Your playbook should be detailed with all the x’s and o’s and provide a careful strategy for how much you need to have saved, what debt you need to have paid off, what your budget is now and what it will be, and a specific plan for how to replace your income in retirement. Your playbook

should include multiple investment strategies to both defend against losses and advance toward your goals. These years often require sacrifice in order to meet the goal line, and a great coach to help get you there. We want to help you make your retirement a winning success!

HATS OFF TO WILL: RELIVE THE PAST
& INSPIRE THE FUTURE
BY AMY BETH DOBBINS
O
n a summer evening in 1899, a group of Cherokee youth gathered for two reasons: to hold the charter meeting of The Pocahontas Club and to dance the night away in a newly-raised barn in Rogers County. What started as a social club, however, has evolved into so much more over the past 100 plus years. The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club (IWPC) currently boasts approximately 200 Cherokee women, ranging from age 18 to 101. The intergenerational group hosts multiple events open to the public along with monthly membership meetings. The purpose of each activity is clear: “…to promote and preserve our Cherokee history and culture and to focus on higher education for Cherokee students,” explains Ollie Starr, IWPC Event Coordinator. Annual events include, among others: the Old Fashioned Picnic each May at Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in Oologah; an annual Tea and Wild Onion Feast as well as weekly art classes offered at the Boys and Girls Club of Chelsea. One of the most notable events each year hosted by the IWPC, 8

however, is the Hats Off to Will gala, paying tribute to the late Will Rogers as well as his family members. This year, Hats Off to Will kicks off on Saturday, November 4 at 4 p.m. at the Will Rogers Downs Event Center, three miles east of Claremore on Highway 20. A catered dinner and entertainment will follow at 5 p.m. Featured entertainment includes something to delight young and old. For starters, Will Roberts, a Will Rogers impressionist will dazzle attendees with his quick humor and trick roping skills. Roberts has been a featured act of Cirque du Soleil and is a nationally syndicated radio host of the “Will Rogers Weekly Telegram”. Also on tap for the evening is lively music by nationallyacclaimed and award-winning Cherokee fiddler, Regina Scott. To share her musical talents at age twelve with the crowd as well is the current Miss Junior Red Fern, Katelyn Meyers of Tahlequah. A live auction featuring all kinds of originals as well as a showcase of Cherokee artisans round out the evening. Fun is not in short supply at this event, as everyone is

encouraged to don a favorite hat in remembrance of Betty Rogers, Will’s late wife who had a flare for headwear. Participation pays at this gala, as the winner of the “Best Hat Contest” will walk away with a $100 giftcard! Hats Off to Will serves as a crucial fundraiser for IWPC in order to accomplish its goal toward the future. Each year, the IWPC is able to award scholarships to Cherokee students in order that they may attend the college or career tech of their choice. Approximately ten $600 scholarships are awarded, annually, to deserving Cherokee seniors. The scholarship recipients commit to serving their community in exchange. Since beginning the scholarship endowment three years ago, the IWPC has awarded $18,000. “We have seen, first-hand, the difference in students’ lives these monies make,” states Susan Gilliland, IWPC Treasurer. HALLOWEEN FUN FOR ALL G BY DANA PUGH
et into the spooky spirit of Halloween at the Castle of Muskogee! The festival is better than ever this year, with new haunts ranging from tame to terrifying. The Castle of Muskogee is Oklahoma’s 60-acre Halloween theme park, open from 6-10 p.m. every weekend this fall. With free parking and free admission to the Halloween Village, and the attractions ranging in price from just $3-$15, there’s something fun for everyone at the Castle. There are eleven great Halloween attractions to enjoy, all conveniently rated by scariness using the Castle’s Skull Rating as a guide to choosing haunts. From the family-friendly Halloween Village (0 skulls) for the younger ones to Domus Horrificus (5 skulls) for extreme thrill seekers, everyone is invited to get into the Halloween Spirit at the Castle. This popular event continues to grow every year, and the Castle is making changes to improve the experience. “We have implemented a new ticketing system this year,” said Matt Hiller, owner of the Castle of Muskogee. The system, called QLess, uses your phone number and alerts you by text message when your turn is coming up. “This way, you can get out and see everything going on at the

festival instead of standing in line,” he added. This is great news, because there’s more to see at the Castle than ever! If you’re looking for a bone-chilling scare, face the menacing creatures along the Trail of Blood or join in on the action on the Dark Tower Zombie Hunt, where it’s up to you to clear the area of Zombies and rescue survivors. If you’re into Halloween but not the accompanying nightmares, try the Haunted Hayride for some eerie excitement. There’s also plenty to do with absolutely no scares, so the kids can join in on the fun at any age. “Here at the Castle, you can bring the entire family,” says Hiller. “The teenagers can go and do the Trail of Blood, the younger kids can ride the train and then everyone can do the Haunted Hayride or the Maze together.” The Castle’s Halloween Village also features live entertainment on the Chessboard Stage with the comedy of the Jester Rejects and Mark Logsdon, Escapologist. New this year is David Smith, the Hypnotist, and Topsy Turvy Acrobats. If you’re looking for an amazing Halloween adventure, gather family and friends and hop on the Muskogee Turnpike – it’s only a short drive from Tulsa.

DRIVEWAYS DONE BY DUANE BLANKENSHIP

ace it. A deteriorating driveway is an eyesore. It’s a bad reflection of you and your neighborhood. If you live in Oklahoma long enough, the odds are that one day your drive is going to be in need of a makeover. negative signs of age, corrosion and other influences. Kalan Paul and LCI Concrete specialize in the replacement of concrete driveways that have, for one reason or another, a case of the “uglies”. “We use only the finest and strengthening materials available for any project we do,” said Kalan. “When only the best materials are used in properly preparing the ground through the laying and curing of the concrete, we expect the finished product to serve you well for at least 30-40 years.” LCI performs their trade throughout northeastern Oklahoma communities including Tulsa, Bixby, Broken Arrow, Collinsville, Jenks and Owasso. LCI’s ultimate goal is a satisfied customer and outstanding workmanship in each job they tackle. It’s always good to deal with companies you know or those who have been in business in our area for at least a year. Don’t be duped by an imposter claiming to be in the home-improvement business. Ask for credentials and references before you commit. Any reputable business will be able to provide you with proof that they are a member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. If you have any doubts, call the BBB and/or check records to see if any complaints have been lodged against the person or company with which you are negotiating. It’s also important

to ask for references for projects the company has done that were similar to yours. Call the home or business owners and then visit the properties to see some finished projects. LCI Concrete has served the Tulsa Metro area for over 12 years and they have a list of more than 100 driveways available for your viewing. “Steel rebar is critical for strengthening concrete work,” says Kalan. “Make sure it is part of the fabrication process and
specified in the total cost estimate before you sign a contract.” Replacing a tired, unsightly driveway is not inexpensive. But, with its life expectancy when done professionally, it can be a great investment adding value to your home or business. Call LCI concrete today for your estimate.

NO MORE DANGEROUS & DIRTY GUTTER CLEANING BY ERICA LUDWIG
T
he season has finally changed to fall, and with the beautiful foliage comes leaves and debris falling directly into your gutters. Cleaning the gutters can be a strenuous task, especially as the weather gets colder and colder as winter approaches. This year, consider taking extra measures to protect your home from the outside in. Rain-Flow Seamless Guttering provides the technology and services for even the most specific guttering needs. Rain-Flow’s services include seamless guttering, gutter screens, commercial guttering, water drainage and wood repair. Owner Chris Mussman says most of their projects involve
installing Leaf Shield Gutter Protection, a product they have been installing since 1997. Made of heavy gauge solid aluminum, Leaf Shield protects guttering from leaves, pine needles, oak tassels, twigs, acorns, buds, birds, squirrels and snow. As water flows over the Leaf Shield, the molecular attraction between the metal and water causes the water to cling to the surface and follow the bends around the nose of the product, allowing it to drain into the gutters. At the same time leaves, pine needles, and other debris fall to the ground. Its low profile design is tested to handle up to 11 inches of rainfall per hour. With a written lifetime warranty

and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide. The Society mobilizes people and resources so that everyone affected by multiple sclerosis can live their best lives as we stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever. Last year alone, through our comprehensive nationwide network of services, the Society devoted more than $100 million to connect approximately one million people affected by MS to the connections, information and resources they need. We are united in our collective power to do something about MS now and end this disease forever. Early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can make a difference for people with multiple sclerosis. Learn about your options by talking to your health care professional and contacting the National MS Society today.

his year, more than 2.5 million customers will invite Honey Baked Ham to be an important part of their holiday gatherings from Thanksgiving through the beginning of the New Year. It all started back in the 1940s when founder Harry Hoenselaar patented the perfect final touch to his delicious gourmet hams…the spiral-slicing process. In addition, Harry also created a unique curing and cooking process that produced unbelievably high quality, bone-in smoked hams. In 1957, Harry opened his first Honey Baked Ham Co. store in Detroit, Michigan. The company is still family-owned and each product still employs the same procedures Harry created from the beginning…one at a time. This is just one of the unique features that makes Honey Baked 26 |

Ham and Turkey so deliciously different from similar products. Whole Honey Baked Turkeys are sold roasted, smoked or Cajun style. In addition to the exquisite taste, turkey breasts are fully cooked and ready to serve, allowing you to spend less time in the kitchen and more time celebrating life with friends and family, one meal at a time. Honey Baked Ham Co. and Cafe of Tulsa is owned and operated by Lee Griffin and the store Manager/Partner is Nikki McAnelly. Lee worked for the parent company 19 years and has owned the Tulsa store for seven. The company’s first employee, Michael Voumard, has 14 years and still serves the organization. Honey Baked Ham of Tulsa is locally owned and operated and the three members of the management team have a combined total of more than 50 years in the Honey Baked business. “Honey Baked’s core values include treating customers like gold, treating everyone with respect, doing the right thing, delivering quality and growth worthy of the brand and making a difference while having some fun!,” says Lee. When you visit the store for lunch, to pick up a delicious dinner or use them to
