Q&A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q:I keep hearing information about freezing my credit. Is this to protect me from identity theft? A: Almost all transactions today involve a computer. Because so much of our financial and personal information is
online, we need to protect ourselves from online thieves. On September 21, 2018, a law will take effect that will eliminate the fees for freezing and unfreezing your personal credit. This law is called the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act. It will now be free to contact each of the three major credit reporting agencies and direct them to place a freeze on your credit file. I recommend requesting your credit freeze through registered mail. Identity theft is a very fast-growing crime Linda Rainwater, AAMS ÂŽ, 14 years, Financial Advisor and hackers are highly skilled at getting to your online requests. Once you receive notice that your credit is frozen, it will be harder for identity thieves to open new credit accounts or make purchases under your identity. When you do wish to add an additional line of credit (such as a new credit card, automobile loan, home loan, etc.), you will need to unfreeze your credit for 24-48 hours so the lender can verify your creditworthiness. This task is inconvenient, but worth the peace of mind that comes from having your credit locked down from potential criminals. Did you know closing costs vary between lenders? If you want to save the most money on your closing costs, it pays to shop around. Here's why.
Interest rates are restricted by market conditions. Your options are limited. Buyers often shop interest rates, choosing the lowest rate possible to help their overall savings over the life of the loan. Yet, rates change daily, sometimes more than once per day depending on different economic factors. When comparing lenders’ rates for secondary market financing, all lenders base their rates off the same market trading; therefore, all quotes should be similar, typically within .125 percent, .250 percent at most.
Lender fees vary from lender to lender. You have more options to lower your costs. Lender origination charges, application fees, processing and underwriting fees can vary significantly between lenders. The best way to compare lenders is to request Loan Estimates. Their fees will be listed under Closing Cost Details on page 2, section A.
You can also cut costs by comparing home insurance coverage and premiums. Oftentimes, the largest expense on your Closing Disclosure is home insurance, another expense that varies between companies. Generally, you will need 14 months of home insurance set aside in your escrow account paid at closing. If you choose a policy that charges $1,800 annually versus a $2 ,500 annual policy, you can save $800 at closing.

Dia De Festival en Baja Fundraiser Benefits RSU Public TV BY TOM FINK

SU Public TV will be hosting one of its more internationally-inspired events this fall with Dia De Festival en Baja. The event, which includes an evening of dinner, relationshipbuilding, and public television celebrities, marks a comeback of sorts for the fundraiser. “A few years ago, we started out doing a dinner fundraiser, primarily as a means to build relationships with corporates whom I could talk to about becoming underwriters on the station,” said Royal Aills, general manager, RSU Public TV. “Because of budgetary reasons, we laid off holding it one year, but I decided to pursue it again this year, and my community advisory board is leading the charge, so we’re hosting it again this year.” Dia De Festival en Baja will be held at the Tulsa Country Club and, as implied by the name, will have a distinctly Mexican flavor. “In previous years, our special guest at these fundraisers was Nick Stellino, whose cooking program has appeared on our station, and as such, the dinner served was primarily Italian food,” Aills said, “but this year’s special guest will be awardwinning chef Pati Jinich, creator of ‘Pati’s Mexican Table’, a series which brings authentic Mexican flavors, colors, textures and warmth into American kitchens. “’Pati is very well-liked across the U.S., and we wanted to bring her in to showcase her and what she does with her program,” he continued. “I think people who enjoy her show will obviously enjoy her company, and those who don’t know about her yet, will get to meet her and learn about another personality on public television.”
Rounding out the VIP names at the event will be Rogers State University President Dr. Larry Rice and his wife Peggy, making the evening one of fun, food, and fundraising for public television. “Our goal is of course to get as many people to come to the dinner/ fundraiser as possible so that we can build relationships with them – with individuals and the corporates with whom we don’t already have relationships, and to say thank you to those relationships we have, and to those individuals who love RSU Public TV,” he said. Aills said corporate tables and individual tables are still available, and he’s hopeful that this year’s event will be the biggest yet. “We’ve done two of these before now, those were the ones with Nick (Stellino),” he said. “Each year exceeded our expectations in terms of attendance – it was fantastic. We’d like to see that same kind of exceeded expectations again this year.” As the only full-powered public television station licensed to a university in Oklahoma, RSU Public TV provides educational, cultural and general interest programming to an audience of 1.2 million viewers in northeast Oklahoma and the Tulsa Metro area. RSU Public TV also produces original programs, such as “Living Grand on Grand Lake” and game show “I Want Answers,” which features area high school students. “We operate on a budget of $1.2 million, which is a relatively small budge in the public television worlds – I think we’re one of the smallest (budgets) out there, but we’re able to do a lot with it, and we get a tremendous amount of positive feedback from our local content,” he said. he Halloween Festival at the Castle of Muskogee is just around the corner! Only a short drive from Tulsa, the Ghost Hosts’ of Oklahoma’s 60-acre park would like you to join them each weekend this fall. Domus Horrificus has also upgraded its shell with a new skin… The Horror Film themed haunt has new residents. Slender Man has made a home within the walls of Horrificus. With the familiar terror of the Purge, guests may have no other option but to escape through ventilation shafts and crawl spaces. There are dark halls and tight spaces in this cinematic nightmare haunt. Haunters beware of this journey. terrifying 5 Perhaps the most infamous of the Halloween Festival is the Trail of Blood. The manner hypnosis is typically shown in movies, television and media is far from reality. It’s often portrayed as somewhere between magic and mysticism, but is actually neither. A UNIQUE CANCER TREATMENT CENTER OPENS IN NORTHEAST OKLAHOMA BY TOM FINK
A
$3 million cancer clinic in northeast Oklahoma recently celebrated its grand opening with an open house and a commemorative ribbon-cutting ceremony, but the real cause for celebration, according to the clinic’s staff, comes from the quality care its patients will receive. Contributing to this care is a cutting-edge machine so unique that it’s one of only a handful like it in the country. Northeastern Oklahoma Cancer Institute in Claremore became the fourth medical center in the United States to install the Varian Halcyon treatment system, the others being at M.D. Anderson in Houston, the University of Pennsylvania, and at the University of California San Diego. With the Halcyon unit at the clinic in Claremore, treatments that patients might have to go to Tulsa, Oklahoma City, or even further to receive, can be found in the heart of

Rogers County. One of the Halcyon unit’s biggest advocates is Dr. Diane Heaton, the center’s medical director. “This (Halcyon) unit is able to treat patients in 15 seconds, versus five to 10 minutes on other machines, so we’re able to have them literally hold their breath during treatment,” said Dr. Heaton, radiation oncologist. “The faster treatment delivery allows for less concern about patient movement. “Radiation oncologists worry a lot about motion, so we typically add quite a bit of margin to minimize the effects of it (motion),” she continued. “As the Halcyon unit is a very rapid machine, it moves so quickly that I don’t have to do that and as such, we can treat patients in a much shorter amount of time.” The facility itself was paid for by radiation oncologists from across the country, and Dr. Heaton is especially invested. “I’m a part owner – I feel

There’s a parent company that owns a good 70 percent, which I was able to talk into investing in Claremore.” Dr. Heaton said patients who’ve been treated by the new Halcyon unit have “marveled” at the technology, particularly the Halcyon’s efficiency and, in many cases, practicality. “The patients are really glad to have this state-of-the-art technology here in Rogers County,” said Dr. Heaton, “and as a physician, I too am happy to have this advanced option available for the patients in this area.” The Halcyon system was designed to revolutionize radiotherapy through innovation in the operational excellence, having a more “human-centered” design, and high quality of care, via an optimized

image guided IMRT (intensitymodulated radiation therapy). IMRT uses advanced technology to manipulate photon beams of radiation to conform to the shape of a tumor. Individualized to treat each patient’s specific cancer, this technology precisely targets tumors with finely-shaped beams to maximize dose to the tumor while minimizing exposure of the surrounding healthy tissues and organs. Because of its versatility, the Halcyon system can be used to treat a wide range of cases, including prostate, breast, head and neck and many other forms of cancer. One cancer survivor who spoke at the grand opening was Claremore resident Ashley May, who remarked it to be “amazing” that the cancer center is in her own hometown. “It (the cancer) was really small, but they caught it early, so I was lucky,” May said. “I’m so excited that Claremore has a clinic here for
people fighting cancer, and with the Halcyon here… that’s something that people around here would otherwise have to drive to M.D. Anderson for. I can’t believe it’s here in Claremore, Oklahoma. That’s amazing.” “A lot of what might have kept some people from getting the treatment they needed was distance,” Dr. Heaton said. “I think we’re finally getting to the point where the technology is really going to help our patients in the more isolated areas. It’s not necessarily just Claremore, but it’s everything between here and Joplin – you know, Adair, Pryor, Vinita – all of that.” But the physicians and the Halcyon unit aren’t the only unique aspect of the Northeastern Oklahoma Cancer Institute. Although visitors to the clinic might not ever see them, there are messages of hope and encouragement written on the walls of the treatment room, just under the surface. Beneath the bright blue paint
are hand-written messages of encouragement, prayer, and hope that were written on the walls during the center’s construction. Messages like: • “Keep your faith and never give up.” • “Rise above, trust above, love above.” - Ephesians 3:20 • “Your hope and strength will inspire many others. Let the hope and strength of others inspire you. There are so many people praying for you. God bless.” Each patient who comes to the clinic receives a booklet, highlighting these messages of hope and healing. “We want every patient to know that the whole community is behind them,” says Dr. Heaton. “We’re all in this together.”

The Fall Home Expo: Resources For Everything Home BY FRANK SAWYER

elebrating its 5th anniversary as the only fall season home and garden show in the Tulsa market, the timing could not be better on its new earlier weekend. The new schedule will allow visitors to enjoy ample parking adjacent to the Exchange Center which was not always the case in previous years. The show will feature hundreds of booths with a mix of both local exhibitors and companies from around North America. This expo will help you connect with experts in a broad range of fields including: kitchens and baths, outdoor living, energy savings and home technology to name a few. With over 40 major business categories represented, this event will certainly prove helpful to your immediate needs before the end of the year

as well as pre-planning spring projects around the house. The show also features a variety of personal products and services, gift ideas, and family-oriented fun for all ages. The 2018 Fall Home Expo, a Tulsa Home Shows production, will come two weeks earlier than in past years opening at noon on Friday, November 2nd through 5pm on Sunday, November 4th. It is located in the Exchange Center at Expo Square on the Tulsa Fairgrounds. Remember, Christmas is only a few weeks after the event and trains can bring out the kid in all of us. Rescue Roundup is a unique gathering of several of the Tulsa area’s top dog adoption groups. The goal of the Rescue Roundup is to find forever homes for as many dogs as possible. Come see and pet dozens of dogs and puppies looking for their new families. This special feature is made possible by Angel’s Pet Funeral Home and Crematory. The Little Light House book fair will help provide quality books to the students at Tulsa’s largest and oldest privately-funded school for special needs children. Last year the event was able to provide over $600 in new books for the children. This year’s goal is to break the $1,000 mark with your help. All sales will generate

he third annual Oklahoma Caring Awards on Sept. 13 celebrated finalists and announced the winners in six distinct award categories. The evening gala featured Jody Jean Dreyer, a 30-year Walt Disney former Senior Executive as the keynote speaker and incorporated Disney-themed elements throughout the event. The Oklahoma Caring Awards honors individuals, churches, businesses, and healthcare companies who have gone above and beyond to care for their loved ones, community, or clients. “It is an honor to host this event as a way to showcase the outstanding hospitality and care that the nominees, finalists, and winners of the Oklahoma Caring Awards demonstrate in our great state of Oklahoma,” said Hospitality House of Tulsa Founder and CEO, Toni Moore. Additionally, the Large Business and Small Business award winners received $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, while all other award winners received a $1,000 prize. Nearly 200 people gathered at the DoubleTree Hotel at Warren Place for the program that honored the six award winners, as well as the 18 finalists. The entertainment for the evening included a live auction, a Disney-themed dessert production, and an engaging question and
answer session with Hospitality House Founder, Toni Moore and Keynote Speaker, Jody Jean Dreyer. All $76,000 of the proceeds from the Oklahoma Caring Awards event benefited Hospitality House of Tulsa. A mission of Philos Hospitality, Inc., Hospitality House is a nonprofit organization that provides lodging, meals, prayer support, transportation assistance, health and caregiving education, and community connection resources to families traveling to Tulsa for medical treatment from 30 miles away or greater.
