Everybody loves a good deal, especially on a quality product. When it comes to home renovation and building, you want the most for your buck without cutting corners. Jim Evans at Energy Tech, Inc. understands this, which is why his top priority is the customer. He does the research on prices and products so you don’t have to. Not only that, he’ll show you how to replace windows in your own home. “We carry most of the window samples of our competitors,” he said. “The best way you can compare windows is putting them right next to each other. It helps give the customer an idea of what they’re looking for.” (continued on page 22)

Owner of Energy Tech, Inc., Jim Evans cares about his customers. Rather than just looking to make a sale, he wants to be certain everything is done right and to your liking.

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

For Advertising Information, call

So Tell Me, What’s On Your Bucket List? BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT Ensuring your finances are aligned with your life goals can be complex and time consuming. I’ve heard every reason in the book as to why folks put it off. Mostly, people find it kind of scary and overwhelming so they avoid it like they avoid a root canal. Our goal is to take the uncertainty out of the equation. We meet with clients, gather information from them about their expenses, savings, and income, and develop solutions and strategies about how to pursue the goal. Our mission is to help you identify your goals, and then design your money around your life. Our proprietary financial planning process called “My Bucket List: Dream.Plan.Do” was designed specifically with our clients in mind. It makes financial planning fun and painless because it is focused on helping you make conscious decisions about what you want your life to look like. We have you focus on your bucket list for your life. What are the things you really want to accomplish? Then, we focus on developing the plan of how to get there. We design your money around your life! We find that the most successful retirees have the frame of mind that they are “retiring to” something. The following are 5 tips to consider before you clock in to work in for the last time! Bucket List #1 Think about how you want to spend your time. It is likely that for the first time in years, you will have a lot of free time on your hands. At first, this is

household and take some of the uncertainty out of retirement.

incredibly appealing. Retirees think about all the things they finally have time to do. However, eventually having a routine helps to normalize the transition. We encourage clients to start “practicing” retirement. Begin trying out hobbies and tasks that are planned for the golden years. Bucket List #2 Begin to redefine your identity. Retirement is an adjustment. “Who am I without a job title and salary?” You are so much more than what you do for an occupation. Take what experiences were gained, and translate that into hobbies. Volunteerism and giving back to your community is thoughtful and rewarding. Start mulling this over before retirement. You will start developing your identity outside of working. Bucket List #3 Complete a financial assessment. We recommend our “My Bucket List. Dream.Plan.Do.” process because it is a fun, action-oriented process to help engage you in consciously defining what you are excited about and your vision for your life. One of the biggest questions pre-retirees have is, “Will I have enough money throughout my retirement?” Doing a personal financial assessment will aid in gauging the needs of your

www.ValueNews.com

Bucket List #4 Do some soul searching. Make a list of a hundred or more things that you would like to do as soon as you enter retirement. New hopes and dreams are crucial during this transition stage in life. The purpose of this is to provide a sense of stability and drive. Bucket List #5 Be proactive about possible changes in relationships. Because you will be spending so much more time at home, there may be changes in the dynamic of your relationship you’re your spouse, children, grandchildren. For some couples, spending 24/7 with their significate other is taxing. There could be some nit picking going on regarding who is in charge of what. Don’t wait for conflict. Define what you would like for this time to look like together; not apart. Retirement is a very exciting phase of life; even more so if you have planned for it, give us a call. We can help. BBeing Mayberry in 2016 Business banking solutions for your busy life.

By Eddie Curran

Remote Deposit Capture (RDC), which lets you process and deposit checks from your customers into your bank account without leaving your shop. Are you business owner A or B? A: You collect checks. Fill out a deposit slip, adding up your total once, twice or however many times until it balances. You leave your shop and drive to the bank. You wait in line to make your deposit. Then, you head back to the shop; maybe run an errand on the way. B: You don’t have time to run Kyle Beggs, Agent/Owner of RCI Insurance Group and fan of remote deposit to the bank Things are a little bit different now, but even in our fast-paced modern world, the spirit of Mayberry can still exist at your business. It begins by cutting down on the time you spend away from your customers. For instance, skip your daily trip to the bank. Seriously. Ask your bank about

When I think of small town local businesses, I’m reminded of Mayberry from “The Andy Griffith Show”. In Mayberry everyone knows your name when you walk in the door. You pay with nickels, dimes or whatever you have. If not, you start a tab and pay it off when you can.

every day, so your checks pile up in a drawer until you make your weekly trip. (Did you know the longer a check sits un-deposited, the higher risk it may bounce?) Both business owners can spend more time with their customers with the convenience of RDC. Plus, they can keep their cash flow going by adding funds to their accounts quicker. Did I mention you can save money and possibly a lot? If you want to see just how much, check out the RDC Business Value Proposition Calculator, available at remotedepositcapture.com. Enter a few details and you can see your personal cost savings for mileage, labor and productivity by using RDC. Miles cost money. If your bank is just one mile from your business, that is two miles a day roundtrip, 10 miles per week. That’s 520 miles a year; and with the standard mileage rate at 54 cents, you’re spending nearly $315 a year

traveling to the bank. How far are you from your bank? Time is money. If an employee makes $10 an hour and they spend half an hour a day processing your payments, you’re paying roughly $1,300 in wages for trips to the bank each year. Things have changed since Opie walked the streets of Mayberry, but one thing remains the same - the value of quality customer service. RDC lets you focus on building relationships with your customers by spending less time managing your daily finances. Ask your banker for details or give RCB Bank a call.

Authentic Bavarian and Tulsa Culture The 2016 Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa celebrates local bier October 20-23

By Erica Ludwig Tonja Carrigg. At this festival, there are no strangers and every participant can enjoy meeting new friends over good food, drink and entertainment.” Live music is always a favorite. Festival goers can expect German bands, country-western artists, oldtime rock, and dancing as entertainment for the festival. Also making it’s return is the Glockenspiel. The Glockenspiel is a two-story, giant life-sized kuckoo clock. Every hour on the hour, actors come out onto the second floor balcony and perform entertaining skits and then chime in the hour in ways only imaginable by Das Glockenspiel. A bar with adult beverages will also greet customers on the lower level. New to Oktoberfest is the OK Hoptoberfest Zelt. This tent featuring seven Oklahoma-based breweries is a celebration to local bier. Brands included in the tent include: Anthem Brewing Company, Hanson Brewing Company, Renaissance Brewing Company, Dead Armadillo Craft Brewing, Nothing’s Left Brewing Co., COOP Ale Works and 405 Brewing Co. Wine, mixed drinks and non-alcoholic beverages also will be served.

A beloved Tulsa tradition is back for a 38th year. The 2016 Linde Oktoberfest will take place October 20-23. Tulsa’s largest festival is located at River West Festival Park on the west bank of the beautiful Arkansas River, and offers four days of authentic German celebration, including live music, games and, of course, food and drinks, among number other attractions. Admission is $7 in advance and $10 at the gate for adults and free for children 12 and under. The Autobahn Pass and other ticket packages are available online, allowing patrons to purchase admission and festival money ahead of time and bypass lines. On Family Friday, admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival offers unlimited rides from noon to 6 p.m. with the purchase of a $20 All-Rides Wristband. Paid parking is available near the festival grounds at $10 and $20, or patrons can ride the free shuttles, which run three routes through downtown, midtown and south Tulsa, near alternative parking areas. “The sense of community is what Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa is known for,” says Festival Director

Q & A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q: A:

My employer has added a Roth 401k choice to my retirement savings plan. I currently contribute to the traditional 401k plan. Which is better? – Curious Charlie Charlie, good to hear that you are contributing to a qualified retirement plan. It is nice that your employer offers this benefit. A traditional 401k allows you to save money each year and not pay taxes on it until you withdraw the money. This lowers your current taxes, but you will be taxed at your tax rate when you withdraw it in retirement, which could be higher or lower than your current tax rate. If you save quite a bit for retirement, you can actually end up in a higher tax bracket when you are not working at all. In this instance, it is usually a good idea to contribute to the Roth 401k option. This will permit you to pay the taxes now and make tax free withdraws in retirement. If you are in a higher tax bracket during retirement, this could be a favorable option. Some employees ease into the Roth 401k by putting some money in the traditional 401k plan and a little bit into the Roth 401k until they see how it affects their takehome pay. You will always be required to pay taxes on your earnings but it is your choice if you want to pay them immediately or defer them until you retire. I recommend working with your CPA and your Financial Advisor to decide which option fits your lifestyle and retirement goals.

Jack Sparrow will be entertaining on stage as well as gallivanting throughout the Castle Village. Within the Castle walls, guests can relive the doom of the dark ages by touring the Torture Chamber or daring a stroll through Casa Morte… translated to House of the Dead, this 12th Century labyrinth provides horror and menacing spirits around every corner. Looking to revisit the nightmare-inducing stars of the Silver screen? Be sure to plan a trip to Domus Horrificus, which takes you to the depths where your favorite monsters dwell; and in the Ultimate Maze, most of you will find your way, and the rest of you, well... Looking for a Bone-chilling scare? Venture into the depths of the Castle grounds and test your fear factor on the Trail of Blood. As a staple of the Castle’s Halloween Festival, we have redefined the possibilities and added new menacing creatures to this wooded walk. Guests may gather courage before entrance or count survivors afterwards at the trail’s pub, The Rack. The hideaway’s host, Elvira, may not offer sanctuary from the trail’s ghouls, but she’ll be there to

serve up drinks and entertaining tales before the return to Castle Village. If you’re looking for immersion scares, we suggest the Dark Tower Zombie Hunt, where your mission and weapons are given, but it’s up to you to clear the area of Zombies and rescue survivors. Parking and admission to the Halloween Village is FREE. Tickets must be purchased for each attraction and prices range from $3.00 to $15.00 with Combo Specials available. Advance tickets may be purchased on-line. Go to the castles website to check out pricing, combo packages and details on attractions. In this family friendly environment, unaccompanied minors must have a photo ID to enter.

Will Rogers Days Plans Expansion Will Rogers Museum to combine events with Claremore and Rogers County November 3-6.

By Pat Reeder Will Rogers Memorial Museum opened Nov. 4, 1938, three years after the death of the man who still remains Oklahoma’s most recognizable native. Thousands of people dotted the hillside of the Memorial, streets were teeming with horses and floats for a giant parade — and there was gridlock on the highway between Tulsa and Claremore. Will Rogers Days have been observed every year since that date except for early war years. “Today events surrounding November 4, the date of Will’s birth on an Indian Territory ranch near Oologah, remain one of the state’s largest Will Rogers events,” said Tad Jones, Museum executive director. Plans are underway to combine a number of events going on in Claremore and all of Rogers County during Will Rogers Days Nov. 3-6, with Museum activities to return the celebration to the excitement of those days. From the Pumpkin Festival at Shepherd’s Cross and plans for downtown Oologah and the Birthplace Ranch to the J.M Davis Arms & Historical Museum, downtown Claremore and up Will Rogers Boulevard to Art on the Hill and the 19th Annual Native American Festival at Rogers State University,

Will Rogers Memorial’s celebration of Will Rogers Days will be multiday festivities at the Museum and throughout the community. “Will was always about community,” Jones said. “He wrote about coming home to family gatherings and feasts, visiting in downtown Claremore, Oologah and Chelsea, and going to rodeos and ropings.” The Will Rogers Days finale will be a parade down the street named for him in 1948 and the American Cowboys Rodeo Association Finals at the Claremore Expo Center. Palomino Horse Breeders Heritage Foundation, with Todd Branson riding a Palomino, will lead the Sunday afternoon parade. In 1948, the same year a Will Rogers three-cent commemorative stamp was issued, more than 100 members of the Palomino Association rode in the parade on onto the grounds where 69 mounted riders (in honor of Will’s 69th birthday) rode down the steps to the Rogers’ family tomb and placed a wreath. Comanche, one of Will’s favorite mounts, was a Palomino. Branson will ride to the tomb at 12:30 p.m. prior to the parade and with members of the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club; place a wreath at the tomb. Family members, friends of Will, actors, sports

stars, Indian chiefs, politicians, bands, the famous and infamous have participated in Will Rogers Days in the past 78 years. The one constant — every year since the Museum opened, the Pocahontas Club, founded in 1899, has place a wreath at the tomb in honor of the friend and neighbor they accepted as an honorary member. Will Rogers Days Special events include: — Pumpkin Festival, Shepherd’s Cross, Sept. 22 through Nov. 5 — Christmas at the Belvidere, Nov. 3-5 — Children’s Day at the Museum, Nov. 3 (featuring Kowboy Kal) — Birthday Party at the Ranch, Nov. 4 (featuring Kowboy Kal and Oologah elementary students) — Art on the Hill, Rogers State University, Nov. 5-6 — American Cowboys Rodeo Association Finals, Nov. 3-6 — Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club, Hats Off to Will Gala, Nov. 5 — Native American Festival, Powwow, Rogers State University, Nov. 5 — Street Shopping, Oologah Cooweescoowee Avenue, Nov. 5 — First Saturday Claremore downtown shopping, Nov. 5

Mary Thompson, ranch wife and longtime member of Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club, and Todd Branson, Palomino Horse Breeders Heritage Foundation, will return to the Rogers tomb on Sunday, Nov. 5. — J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum Shootout, Nov. 5 — Route 66 Cruisers Car Show, Will Rogers Memorial Museum, Nov. 5 — Pony Express Ride, Sunday, Nov. 6 — Will Rogers Days Parade, 2 p.m. Sunday Nov. 6

Baked to Perfection continued from page 1 cedure that produced one-of-akind, high quality, bone-in smoked hams. He opened his first Honey Baked Ham Co. store in Detroit, Michigan, in 1957. The company is familyowned and Harry’s procedures are still used in preparing products just as he did…one at a time, an element that makes Honey Baked hams and turkeys so different from similar products. Whole Honey Baked Turkeys are also available roasted, smoked, or Cajun style. “Hams are slow-cooked with real Hickory wood for 2024 hours under Harry’s strictly monitored standards to ensure

that each will be moist, tender and flavorful,” said Lee. “We’re consistent in what we do and this is just one of the reasons Honey Baked Ham Co. has remained a leader in the industry for nearly 60 years.” “There are three facilities in the U.S. that produce, cook, spiral slice and deliver hams to Honey Baked Ham stores in 37 states,” he said. “Products are shipped under strict temperature conditions and once received by our store, each ham goes through a 21 point inspection before we apply Harry’s unique hand-glaze one product at a time, making sure we maintain the highest level of satisfac-

tion from start to customer.” Customers enjoy Honey Glazed Ham and Turkey products during all U.S. holidays and celebrations including Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Easter, Mother’s Day and Fourth of July. When you need to feed a crowd, they cater to you. They have a great catering menu and provide services for business meetings, staff meetings, special dinners and events. “We maintain the same superior standards in every product we offer from our Honey Glazed Ham and Turkey to all the other products offered including sandwiches, signature salads, boxed lunches, soups,

fresh deli sides, and specialty desserts such as coffee cake, pumpkin pie, New York style cheesecake, carrot cake, apple caramel walnut pie, and southern pecan pie,” added Lee. You can also go to the cafe at Honey Baked Ham of Tulsa and enjoy a sit-down lunch or dinner. “We’re committed to making your meals truly special whether you’re dining at our cafe, at home or at your place of business,” said Lee. “All Honey Baked Ham products and gift cards make wonderful gifts for any person and any occasion.” Go online and peruse the Honey Baked Ham menu and

Scares, Carnivals and Candy The Robson Performing Arts Center in Claremore offers a variety of Halloween activities for all ages. By Ruby Quinn

October brings to mind beautiful fall leaves, cooler temperatures and children dressing up to cash in on tricks and treats. Claremore’s Robson Performing Arts Center is in full swing with activities for the whole family. The Robson Performing Arts Center is for all students and families from Green Country. The center is mounting a Halloween carnival for the whole family, a haunted house and lots of games. Heading into the third year of the annual Haunted House, this year promises to be bigger than ever. Usually housed in the center’s smaller performance space, this year it moves to the large main stage area, promising to be twice as big with twice the scares. “Each year there is a theme,” noted the architect and designer of the haunted house, Monica Sallaway, “and this year’s theme is an insane asylum.” The asylum will be full of theatre students training hard with drama teacher, Maigan McPherson to dish out the scares. “There are three levels of scary,” states Maigan, “just in case you have a young person

that really wants to go through the haunted house, but may not be fully up to all the frights at a hundred percent.” The Robson PAC is home to The Imagine ACTion Youth Theatre Camp. Most of the kids call it, “I Act.” “No child is ever turned away due to lack of funds,” mentions I ACT co-founder, Pamela Neuok, “and that is why they raise funds through the Halloween season along with the rest of the year.” Funds from the Haunted House and other carnival activities also go toward the theatre and music departments of the schools. “Supporting the arts is vital to giving the children every opportunity to become all that they can be,” proclaims the PAC’s Executive Director, Ruby Quinn. “These children have major goals in their lives, and with experience in the arts, these performers will grow up to be critical thinkers, team players, and strong speakers, whether they choose to stay in the arts or in all fields including science and technology.” While the Asylum is scaring its victims, there will also be a “pop walk” and some other fun

This year’s festivities include a haunted house with an asylum theme. activities just in case everyone in the family isn’t in love with haunted houses. The music director, Ruiel Doonkeen, will lead the pop walk where people move around to the music, but when the music stops, everyone sits. If you’re sitting in the lucky chair, you get a soda! they always have a fun time vying for ‘bragging rights’ following each outing.” This year’s Sporting Clay event will include 12 stations. Entry fee for 100 clays is $125 per individual or $400 per four-man team. Each shooter will receive 100 clays and must provide their own eye and ear protection, a range requirement. Each participant must also provide their own shotgun in the gauge of choice plus four boxes of shot shells. If a shooter desires, he or she may buy up to two mulligans at a cost of $10 each. If you plan to buy mulligans, be sure to bring extra shot shells. And if you’re clueless as to what a mulligan is, it’s a missed shot that, against the rules, a participant is allowed to take again. Or, simply put, a little insurance! Shooters may also participate in an additional shooting event called a flurry. The flurry competition is $25 per shooter. Each person will be given five clay targets released in rapid succession. The obvious goal is to break as many as you can! Prior to kicking off the Sporting Clay Shoot festivities and competition, each participant will be required to attend a Shooter Safety Meeting. A continental breakfast and lunch is covered by your registration fee, and there will be soft beverage stations throughout

the clays course. Award plaques will be presented to the top three teams, Best Senior Shooter, High Overall Shooter, and the Best Flurry Shooter. The Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors multiple and diverse events each year and is the 450+ member voice of business in the Claremore community. They are an official private, non-profit corporation functioning since 1927. The Chamber offers a variety of services with the common goal of promoting a healthy economic atmosphere while preserving the excellent quality of life residents enjoy in Claremore. Support your Claremore Area Chamber by being a participant! Sign up for the first ever Sporting Clay Shoot on Friday, October 28.

HHoliday Gifts from the Heart Give a gift with a personal touch at OHCE’s second annual Happy Holiday Gift Ideas on Monday, October 24 from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.

By Erica Ludwig The Tulsa County Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) will be hosting their second annual “Happy Holiday Gift Ideas” event on Monday, October 24 at the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Tulsa, located at 7903 E. 15th St., from 9:45 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be between 10 and 12 food and crafts demonstrations by OHCE members to provide gift ideas that anyone can make. See demonstrations for delicious homemade fried tacos as a dish to spice up any holiday party. For those who love to create outside of the kitchen, how-to’s of watercolor greeting cards, scrapbook style cards, simple to make Christmas ornaments and easy sewing projects such as Chenille potholders and koozie bowls will be displayed. There will also be a flower arranging course as well as a tutorial on making your own sugar scrub. Each demonstration is budget conscious and user friendly. A booklet with easy-tofollow instructions, patterns and recipes is included. Kathy Erwin, membership committee chairperson, Tulsa County, organized with her team this event in its inaugural year. She

Cindy Crowley, Kathy Erwin, Wanda Moore and Mary Hart show some of the items you can learn to make at the Happy Holiday Gift Ideas event. is ecstatic that it is returning with new gifts and ideas for the holidays. “We gave this a holiday theme,” she says, “but what is really nice is how most of the projects can be adapted seasonally for any giftgiving occasion.” If you have always wanted to try your hand at flower arranging, watercolor painting or simple sewing projects, this is the perfect opportunity to learn something new in the company of other

ladies united in the same effort. Presentations will be before and after a lunch of taco soup and chocolate dessert. Cost, including lunch, is $10 per person. Seating is limited so reservations must be made by October 19. “We are proud to serve the community in this unique and special way,” says Kathy. “We want people to get to know us and what we do, and hopefully join one of our seven groups in Tulsa County.”

Representatives from each of the groups – Candleliters, Daisies, Eastside, Jenks, Owasso Pioneers, Southside Neighbors, and Valley View – will be on hand to introduce themselves and the specific community service project they support, which include Happy Hands School for the Deaf, Quilts of Valor, Jenks Food Bank, and Tulsa County Emergency Shelter. All groups uphold the goal to develop leadership and to promote

and extend the best interests of the family, home and community through the associations in all 77 counties. Countywide projects include cultural enrichment, family issues, healthy living, a holiday luncheon, membership, promotional sales, resource management, scholarships, and the Tulsa County Fair. The 80-year-old OHCE grew out of home demonstration clubs who made it their mission to distribute educational information on agricultural and home economics. Anyone who wants to learn something new on October 24, and have a lot of fun getting into the holiday spirit, should send a check for $10 no later than October 19 to OHCE-TC, 8516 S. 43rd West Ave., Tulsa, Oklahoma 74132.
