Although mold and its spores are literally everywhere, active mold growth requires moisture. Whether on visible surfaces or hiding behind drywall, in attics, or under carpets, indoor mold grows in the presence of excessive dampness or water. Mold growth, which often looks like spots, can be many different colors, and can smell musty. No matter what type of mold is present, it should be removed. Actively-growing mold damages the material it lives on, thereby impairing structural integrity. In addition, mold is associated with many different health effects in humans, including allergies and infection. Since the effect of mold on people can vary greatly, either because of the amount or type of mold, you should call the professionals at Servpro to improve the Indore air quality for you and your family.

Q&A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q: Are variable annuities a good investment? I’ve heard bad things about annuities. – Curious Cathy
A: Annuity means “annual” and is a contract with an insurance company. There are several
different types of annuities; some are better than others. One of the benefits people appreciate is the choice to take income for a specific number of years or take income for the remainder of your life. Many annuities also have living benefits which guarantee the amount of income you can withdraw each year. It is important to select a variable annuity that offers investments that grow over time. Annuities that guarantee a minimum amount of growth are preferred to ones that cap the amount that your money can grow. Some have death benefits which increase the amount that your heirs can receive, sometimes above the value of the annuity. You can begin with a small amount in a high-quality annuity and add more money as you learn and become comfortable with this complex investment. It is important to understand each of your investments and to be informed of the fees charged and the rules that apply to the specific product you are considering. Feel free to obtain a second opinion when purchasing a complex investment. I am available to review annuity contracts at no charge.

An investment in variable annuities involves risk, including possible loss of principal. The contracts, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than the original investment. on Hansen is a well known northeastern Oklahoma farming and ranching entrepreneur. Already in the farming and cattle business prior to the origination of Thunderbird Berry Farm, he has parlayed the Thunderbird entities to also include cattle ranching, vegetable farming, quality top soils and compost. All aspects of the Thunderbird organization are under the same management team, many of whom are Hansen relatives. Most of the operations are located east of Broken Arrow on Hansen Road (321st E. Ave.) just south of 71st Street (Kenosha). Soil Smart Headquarters is located a quarter mile north of East 71st on 353rd East Avenue (Lone Star Rd.). Hansen’s latest brainchild was in 2016 with the formation of Soil Smart Partners. It is spearheaded by three of his grown grandkids with Don serving as their mentor. The company specializes in specialty soils for individual gardeners and professional contractors. Now entering their second growing season, Soil Smart offers quality top soils and compost for any gardening need. Owners of Soil Smart

The company has two Divisions: The Materials Division serves contractors with fill dirt and topsoil. The Compost Division serves landscape specialists and gardeners. “Whatever you’re planning to grow, we’ve got the dirt,” says Wes. “We utilize organic wastes, such as leaves and lawn clippings, to recycle and transform into nutrient dense compost.” They also accept leaves, branches and lawn clippings free of charge. All you have to do is deliver them to the location north of East 71st on 353rd East Avenue. Top soil and compost may be purchased in bulk by the truck load, trailer load or pickup load. container plantings. Orders may also be customized to include additional amendments such as pine bark, gypsum or limestone. “Tell us what you plan to do with your soil,” says Kristen, “and we will gladly recommend ingredients to satisfy your desires and improve quality and production of your plants and crops. Area Azaleas, for example, commonly desire an acidic mixture while tomatoes thrive on a neutral mix.” Soil Smart is contributing top soil and compost to Emerson Elementary School in Tulsa for their Student Urban Gardening Day. “We’re donating materials for the project,” said Kristen, “and have recommended that each student does a planting and grows their chosen variety in a gardening container.” Take the challenge. “Plant part of your garden this spring with a customized product from Soil Smart and the balance of your garden without,” says Wes. “We think you’ll see a marked difference in your plants, because we’ve got the dirt.”

This is year we will feature, in its ts last public viewing, the Tiny Home built by the Homebuilders Association of Greater Tulsa as a fundraiser for the HBA Charitable Foundation along with other unique tiny home examples including the tiniest tiny home yet!
BY FRANK W SAWYER
Tulsa’s newest home and garden show is returning for its third year. Spring Home & Outdoor Living Expo, sponsored by Junk King, is set for a three-day weekend opening at noon on Friday, April 20, 2018 in the River Spirit Expo at Expo Square. The show falls on Earth Day weekend. Many of the exhibitors will be drawing special attention to how their business uses recycled materials in their products and how easy their products are to recycle. Other exhibitors will be showcasing ways to save energy and conserve resources around the house. Junk King is a perfect sponsor as they are America’s greenest junk removal service and strive to send as little as possible to the landfill. Both parking and admission are free again this year. As you enter the show, you can also register for the daily $500 cash drawing. Register early on Friday and have multiple chances to have your name drawn. The first 1,500 families entering the drawing will be given a valuable free gift. Each adult entering the show will also be given a voucher, valued at $15, for free document shredding provided by Green Country Shredding and Recycling in Broken Arrow. This comes at the perfect time
to shred that oldest year of tax records and other “Spring cleaning” discards. This year’s expo will feature a wide variety of building components, remodeling materials and service providers for your home. Some of these offerings will be seen for the very first time in Tulsa. The show is the perfect size to have a great variety of things to see and yet be easily walked in a two-hour period while allowing in-depth exploration of your favorites. Show hours are Friday from Noon to 8pm, Saturday from 10am to 8pm, and Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Spring Home & Outdoor Living Expo is produced by locally-owned Tulsa Home Shows, which is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau. So, as you are planning your upcoming weekend activities, make sure to pencil in Tulsa’s newest home and garden show, Spring Home & Outdoor Living Expo, and visit SpringHomeExpo.com for additional updates, schedules and details.

! M A C S A S I T I : N O I T U A C Six signs you are a target for wire fraud
FRAUD ALERT
By the RCB Bank Fraud Department, 877.361.0814 Do I really know this person?
Wiring money is a way to send and receive money fast. It’s also a prime target for fraud. Wire fraud often happens when dishonest people convince you to willingly send funds under false pretenses. Because money moves fast in a wire transfer, it is nearly impossible to get it back. Banks are required by law to make deposited check funds available within days, but it may take weeks to uncover a fake check. You are liable if you deposit fraudulent funds into your bank account. If a check you deposit turns out to be a fake, you are responsible for repaying the bank. Don’t be fooled. Before sending or accepting money, ask yourself these questions.
If you feel you are a victim of fraud, call your bank immediately. Get more security tips at: RCBbank.com/GetFit FBI.gov/scams-and-safety Opinions expressed above are the personal opinions of the author and meant for generic illustration purposes only. Member FDIC.

Is the person a new acquaintance? A new romance? Scammers often use social media, email or phone to target victims. They will do whatever it takes to develop a seemingly real relationship with you, which may include meeting you in person. Be on guard for romance scams.
Is this person claiming to be a family member in trouble? It’s called a grandparent scam. A criminal pretends to be a relative who needs money, e.g., they’re in trouble, had an accident or need bail money. They ask you to send money fast via gift cards or wire transfer, and beg you not to tell anyone. Always call the person at a known number (not the caller ID number) to confirm their story.
Is this person claiming to be a government agent, police officer or banker investigating a series of fraud cases and needs my help? Scammers spoof caller ID and email addresses to look as if it is a trusted company or friend calling. Do your research, check the facts and talk to your bank about the transaction before sending money.
Is this person offering a get-rich deal. Am I asked to keep it secret? Do not pay upfront for a promise to make money fast. Watch out for prize and inheritance scams that require you to pay taxes in advance.
Did this person come to my door or are they offering me an advance-payment service? “No thanks.” Do not pay for services in advance. This also goes for things like debt relief, loan offers, online purchases or jobs. Watch out for services that require payment through electronic transfer to a home office or to another individual who they claim to be the boss.
Am I feeling pressured to send money? Be suspicious of urgent money requests. Scammers want you to act fast and use threats and emotional ploys. STOP. Slow down and check the facts. Discuss the transaction with your bank, the police or a friend before sending money.

aking the most of your auto service experience shouldn’t be a dreaded visit. You should be able to take in your vehicle, get it diagnosed, get maintenances and trust that you will be treated honestly and fairly with integrity and accuracy. Jim Glover Chevrolet, in Tulsa, is one of the premier auto dealerships in Oklahoma. They have received numerous awards throughout the years based on verified results from comprehensive surveys taken by customers of the dealership. “From our owners down, we recognize that our customers have a lot of choices for their service needs. Our team of service advisors don’t take customers for granted and try our best everyday to walk in our customers shoes - listening carefully to their auto service needs, so that their jobs are done right the first time,” said Kevin Thames, service manager. The Jim Glover Chevrolet service department is not about the car… it’s about you, our customers. We appreciate all of our loyal customers and it has been so nice to continuously see familiar faces that have followed us to our location at I-44 & Arkansas River.” Technology is a vital part of your vehicle so you want to think about the possible severity of your problem when you hear an unusual sound, or are experiencing a problem. Kevin said many vehicles have over 20 computer modules in their systems. There are some problems that can only be accurately diagnosed, repaired and programmed at the dealership. The Glover’s technical staff includes Master Certified Technicians with

Additionally, loaner vehicles are available while your car is being repaired with an appointment, as well as, a free shuttle service to get you home or to work on time. Uniquely, they also have free bicycles and helmets available if you would rather spend your time cycling by the river. The Glover’s are proud to stand by their work. “We pride ourselves in consistently doing the job right the first time,” emphasized Kevin. o you dream of making your own strawberry jam with berries you picked yourself? This April, pack up the family and head to Huldy’s Farm, a family-owned and operated berry farm in Inola, about 30 minutes east of Tulsa. “We are on a peaceful patch of land easily accessible from Highway 412,” said Owner Gwen Johnson. “If the Good Lord permits, strawberries may be ready starting in mid-April with the warmer weather we’ve been having. We’re scheduled to be at the Tulsa Farmers’ Market on Cherry Street at 15th and Peoria, Saturdays starting April 7. We’re also adding a new booth location in Tulsa on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in the Country Club Plaza parking lot at 51st and Harvard. The farm will open for the season on April 10.” This year, Gwen says the farm has 24,000 strawberry plants, which equals out to a little more than an acre and a half of plants. Each strawberry plant produces about a pound of berries. A new
piece of equipment this year is the Picking Assistant, which will help Gwen’s employees pick even more strawberries to take to the Tulsa markets. Customers can see it in action on Wednesdays and Fridays. The farm is prepared to accommodate visitors, with tables and chairs located near the picking area, folding seats available for a $1 rental fee to use while picking, free bottled water, and portable toilets. Huldy’s welcomes birthday parties and family reunions, and customers are always welcome to bring their own picnic lunches and snacks. After picked, strawberries and blackberries are then gently transferred from the picking buckets to cardboard flats, so patrons arrive home with berries intact. Blueberries are sturdier, so they are packaged in food-safe plastic bags when picked by customers and packaged into plastic pint containers when the staff picks them. Gwen’s daughter, Erin, named the farm. Her grandparents had owned a 1955 Chevy Truck named Huldy – a nickname for a woman prophetess briefly mentioned in the Bible named Huldah who was strong in her faith in God. In
March 2010, with the help of Erin, friends, neighbors, and Gwen’s Sunday School Class, the first patch of blueberries were planted. In the following years, Gwen and her crew added strawberries and blackberries to the farm. During April and May, the farm is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. During June and July, the farm is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. However, if you want to make an aft er-hours appointment, Tuesday through Saturday, Gwen can schedule an appointment for you. Please note that hours can change due to inclement weather and availability of ripe berries, so call or check Huldy’s Farm Facebook page to confirm hours for the day you plan to pick. Strawberries are available for picking starting mid-April; the blueberries should be ready by late May, and the blackberries should be ready by mid-June.

After over a decade of raising awareness for made in Oklahoma products, The MIO Coalition recognized that consumers in our state not only want to shop for local products at the grocery store, but they also want to support the Oklahoma restaurants that incorporate locally produced food and beverage items into their menu’s. Thus, in an effort to make this information more readily available to Oklahoma consumers the MIO Restaurant Program was born. he groundhog was wrong – at least for the Oklahoma area. While parts of the north and west have been ravaged by snow and dangerous rains, it’s been quite nice in the Sooner state. But nicer weather can invite a few visitors that no one wants to entertain termites. Swarming of these destructive and pesky little creatures usually occurs in the spring and most often during the morning following a warm rain shower, whereby the soil temperature is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. There are several areas in green country that are in high risk of springtime termite swarms including: Bartlesville, Broken Arrow, Claremore, Jenks, Miami, Muskogee, Okmulgee, Owasso, Ponca City, Sand Springs, Sapulpa and Tulsa. “We are armed and prepared for the early spring weather,” said Sheila Disler or Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care. “Treatments are administered in and around our homes, garden, shrubs and lawns, therefore diminishing the inherent numbers of termites, mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and bedbugs.” Termite colony nest

development is slow in the first few months. But after a few years, the queen termite can actually produce up to 10,000 offspring a year. One queen may live for many years and workers up to two years. The swarmers go to work in the thousands after a mature termite nest is large and well-established on smaller nests. When specialists find a smaller swarmer nest, it’s a sure sign that a larger termite nest is in the vicinity and professional protection is required. Mother Nature’s treats termite colonies with Sentricon bait systems.“We always perform a thorough, free inspection at your residence or business before recommending any treatment, “said Justin Buckmaster of Mother Nature’s. “Each pest problem is different and requires a tailor-made solution. Mother’s Nature’s experienced staff is ready to help our neighbors in Green Country prepare.” According to the United States Department of Agriculture, U.S. residents spend an estimated $5 billion annually to control termites and repair termite damage.

One termite swarm can cause thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to one home or business. “Our biggest investments are our homes and businesses, and it makes sense to proactively guard those investments with professional help,” said Sheila. “And, Mother Nature’s has been serving the green country area since 1979. If you need us, we will be there.”

ogers County Emergency Management (RCEM) wears a lot of hats. Their overriding purpose, though, is clear: keep Rogers County citizens safe! Code Red, a newly-launched emergency alert system is now better able to do just that. “From tornados, floods, and winter weather advisories to road closures, utility issues and the like— Code Red is comprehensive, accurate and user friendly,” states Scotty Stokes, Emergency Management Director. “It’s also more economical in terms of better use of tax dollars than our former warning system.” Stokes explains that when RCEM

set out to replace its old alert system, a lot of research was conducted before landing on Code Red. Not only that, Code Red had a lot of credibility, having been utilized by some of the neighboring counties with great success. Specifically, RCEM wanted a system that would automatically notify contacts when the need arose; a system wherein addresses could be geo-located by GPS coordinates; that could direct emergency response employees to a situation as needed; and, finally, one that not only notified citizens of emergency situations close to home, but, also, one with the capability to
OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE APRIL 2018
notify citizens of dangers while they were mobile. With such a tall order, RCEM set out to test the waters. Code Red met each of the criterion and then some—and at a lower cost than its predecessor. So why not simply rely on the simplicity of a tornado siren, for example, rather than Code Red? “Code Red is an early warning system for Rogers County as a whole. Tornado Sirens are operated by individual municipalities and are designed to warn people while they are outside. This system is much more powerful and effective— designed to wake you up and
Director Scotty Stok o es, Rogers County Emergency Manageme ment nt
warn you immediately in cases of emergency,” Stokes explains. As is apparent, Code Red has great capabilities to effortlessly warn Rogers County citizens of impending dangers and, even, inconveniences. Currently, every telephone number assigned to a land line inside of Rogers County is already input in Code Red and will begin receiving notifications. If a citizen does not have a land line, however, or wants notifications on a cellphone, he or she must enroll in Code Red online. Enrolling in Code Red is quick and simple. Simply go to www. rogerscounty.org. Then, click on
the Code Red icon. From there, you will create an account and select the types of notifications you would like to receive—whether emergency warnings, only, or general warnings (e.g. road closures directly affecting your area of residence, utility outages, etc.) as well. Code Red is very user friendly, so do not delay. Enroll online today at www.rogerscounty.org!
